A Second Century of Art and Inspiration

October November December 2023

THE EDUCATIONAL IMPACT OF K-12 PROGRAMS

The Heckscher Museum of Art provides exceptional arts education experiences for students across Long Island. During the 2022-2023 school year, Museum Educators engaged more than 6,000 students, representing 98 schools and 69 school districts, with programs in the galleries and schools.

Program content is inspired by the themes and works of art in the Museum’s changing exhibitions. Each school year presents fresh opportunities for students and teachers to learn about diverse works of art and related multidisciplinary content. For the current 2023-2024 school year, Museum Educators will connect students with artwork in four exhibitions - Raise the Roof: The Home in Art; COURTNEY M. LEONARD: LOGBOOK

2004-2023; Salt Life: Arthur Dove and Helen Torr; and George Grosz: The Stick Men.

Programs align with the New York State Education Department’s Learning Standards

for the Arts, and embody the goals of DEAI (Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, Inclusion). Using inquiry-based teaching methodologies, Educators engage students in observational discovery, critical thinking, visual literacy, collaborative discussion, and creative expression. Learn more about K-12 programs at Heckscher.org/education.

Dear Friends,

One of the most delightful and active spaces in the Museum is the lobby. A space for friends and family to connect, for children to engage in art activities, for public programs, and Dinners with the Director to take place. The lobby is also home to the Youth Eternal fountain, sculpted by Evelyn Beatrice Longman. Commissioned by founders August and Anna Atkins Heckscher to coincide with the dedication of the Museum in 1920, the figures have special significance as they depict Heckscher’s grandchildren gazing into the fountain’s waters.

This summer the fountain has been flanked on either side by two paintings, created by

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

artist Courtney M. Leonard (Shinnecock, b. 1980), portraying her daughter swimming in Shinnecock Bay, as part of the mid-career retrospective exhibition, COURTNEY M. LEONARD: LOGBOOK 2004–2023. Together, the fountain and paintings beautifully represent children’s joy and wonder, of the sea and nature, and the possibility they hold for the future.

These themes will next be explored in the fall exhibition, Salt Life: Arthur Dove and Helen Torr, presenting rarely seen works on paper by modern artists Arthur Dove (1880–1946) and Helen Torr (1886–1967). The exhibition explores the couple’s connection to Long Island and the impact of the natural environment on their art. It also marks the twentieth-fifth anniversary of the Museum’s ownership and preservation of their historic home in Centerport, where the two artists lived and worked.

Thanks to a grant from the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios (HAHS) program, Long Island Biennial artist and sculptor, Susan Buroker, and accomplished sound engineer, Evangeline Knell, worked with the Museum to engage students from Girls Inc. in a variety of art, science, and technology activities. The result is a large-scale kinetic sculpture by Buroker and two new outdoor soundwalks for the public to enjoy – one at the Dove/Torr Cottage and the other at Heckscher Park in Huntington. These soundwalk experiences will feature the voices of the participating students sharing

We are especially grateful to Monica Ortiz- Menier of Helen Keller National Center, a member of the Museum’s Accessibility Advisory Group, who advocated for tactile signs to be created to ensure that all visitors, especially those with visual impairments, could utilize the soundwalk. We are also grateful to the Town of Huntington Environmental Open Space & Park Fund Advisory Committee. They were excited and supportive of the idea of providing the signs. The EOSPA committee and Town of Huntington awarded a generous grant to support the creation of the signs at entrances to the Museum, Heckscher Park and the Dove/ Torr Cottage.

Please join us at the Celebrate Achievement Benefit, October 14 at Water’s Edge in Centerport, where guests will have the special opportunity to look across Mill Pond, view the Dove/Torr Cottage, and see the new sculpture and soundwalk preview.

Drawn from the collections of The Heckscher Museum of Art and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, TX, this exhibition presents rarely seen works on paper by the important twentieth-century American Modernists Arthur Dove (1880–1946) and Helen Torr (1886–1967). The exhibition explores the couple’s longstanding connection to Long Island, the natural environment and experimentation with materials and techniques that inspired their work, and the impact of Dove’s declining health on their art.

For most of their years together, Arthur Dove and Helen Torr lived on and along the waterways of Long Island’s North Shore. In 1938, they settled at what is now the Dove/Torr Cottage in Centerport. Located on the banks of picturesque Titus Mill Pond, the cottage’s surroundings provided the subject matter – light, wind, water, and atmosphere – for some of Dove’s and Torr’s art. The exhibition coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Museum’s acquisition of the cottage.

Approximately eighty (80) artworks are featured in the exhibition, including some of Dove’s most acclaimed watercolors created during the last years of his life, when he was confined to his home and Torr was his primary caretaker. Torr ceased painting but continued to draw during this period. Her artistic career ended, due in part to the

barriers that female artists faced, as well as the time she devoted to caring for Dove and supporting his work. The Heckscher Museum holds one of the largest collections of Torr’s paintings and drawings.

This exhibition was co-developed by the Museum’s Chief Curator, Karli Wurzelbacher, Ph.D., and Spencer Wigmore, Ph.D., Associate Curator of Paintings, Sculpture & Works on Paper, Amon Carter Museum.

THE ARTHUR DOVE & HELEN TORR COTTAGE

A PLACE OF CONTINUING INSPIRATION WITH NEW SOUNDWALK & SCULPTURE

Girls Inc. in a project inspired by artist Helen Torr that explored how the natural world influenced her life and art.

The Heckscher Museum is celebrating 25 years of its stewardship of the Dove/ Torr Cottage in Centerport, NY, coinciding with the exhibition Salt Life: Arthur Dove and Helen Torr. A new soundwalk and the addition of a large-scale sculpture provide unique opportunities to experience this historic site in new ways.

Dove and Torr purchased the property in 1938. The cottage is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios Program administered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It also is included on the Historic Artists’ Sites of Long Island website, lihistoricartistssites. org, funded by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation.

This year, the Museum was awarded a Dorothy C. Radgowski Learning Through Women’s Achievement in the Arts grant, a joint effort of Where Women Made History and Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios, both programs of the National Trust. The Education staff along with Long Island artist and sculptor, Susan Buroker, and accomplished sound engineer, Evangeline Knell, led middle school students from

The soundwalk project began with a week-long “camp” at the Museum and the cottage. Girls Inc. students learned about Torr and the local ecosystem. They engaged in a variety of art, science, and technology activities, including conducting water sample experiments and capturing the sounds of nature. “It’s amazing how quickly students adapted to new technologies – especially podcasting and sound sampling,” said Knell. “I can’t wait for visitors to explore the Dove/Torr Cottage property in an innovative way.”

Buroker stated, “The most exciting part for me working with the girls was reading excerpts from Torr’s diaries….This experience seemed to empower them…and became the inspiration we used to create sculpture maquettes. Our collaborative effort is in celebration of an underrecognized woman artist.” As a tribute to

The project culminated in two outdoor soundwalks for the public – one at the Dove/Torr Cottage and the other at Heckscher Park in Huntington. ILLUMINATIONS 2023: THE MANY FACES OF HOME

THE HECKSCHER MUSEUM LIGHTS UP FALL FESTIVAL WITH A MULTIMEDIA INSTALLATION

OCTOBER 7 AND OCTOBER 8

7 - 8 pm

A dynamic multimedia display of art, light, and sound, sure to delight and engage all audiences, Illuminations 2023, is a highlight of the annual Long Island Fall Festival at Heckscher Park.

Illuminations 2023: The Many Faces of Home includes a custom-made collection of dynamic, short, digital art animations, which will be projected onto the Museum's façade and choreographed to music. This socially engaged and collaborative visual art installation has been specifically created for the Museum by a team of international digital artists working with Executive Director Heather Arnet, and visual artist Han Qin, a

digital artist and printmaker based on Long Island and Hangzhou, China. Qin, an adjunct professor at Stony Brook University, has artwork included in the permanent collection of the Museum, which was featured in the Viewfinders photography exhibition earlier this year.

The projected art installation includes three acts. The first, My New Home created by Han Qin, portraying and celebrating the immigration experience, is a 3D image projection featuring portraits of diverse community members who have immigrated to Huntington and made it their home. The second piece, also by Qin, Journey Home is an animated film projection, showcasing ocean hues of blue and a school of fish transfiguring before the eyes into groups of people swimming to a new home,

a beautiful, captivating portrait of the journey to a new land, a new island home…Long Island. The Grand Finale is a custom-made collection of dynamic animation pieces choreographed to music. These digital art pieces are created by several international artists and curated by award-winning, New York-based artist and curator Chiarina Chen. Original music for Illuminations 2023 is composed by internationally recognized composer and cellist, Professor Margaret Schedel, Co-Director of Stony Brook University’s Computer Music Department.

Illuminations 2023 Sponsored by The Huntington Chamber of Commerce, with additional support provided by the Town of Huntington.
