MEMBERS MAKE IT HAPPEN

SPOTLIGHT: MOLLA GARY We love our Members! Members like Molla Gary make it possible for The Heckscher Museum of Art to offer changing exhibitions and hold enjoyable arts experiences all year round. Molla Gary moved to Huntington in the 1960s and immediately connected with the Huntington artist community. She joined the Museum and has been a dedicated member of the Heckscher family through four children, twelve grandchildren, and countless rewarding hours as a Museum Docent.

“Being a member and a Docent at The Heckscher Museum is a very rewarding experience.” – Molla Gary

Molla Gary, left, at work in the gallery. Jan Staller, Pinwheels, Edison, N.J., 2016, inkjet print.

As a graduate of the High School of Music & Art, and Cooper Union (for graphic arts) in New York City, it was natural that Molla would continue to be creative in her new hometown. She painted watercolor abstracts and did calligraphy, participating in juried exhibitions at the Museum and through the (then) Huntington Art League, where she served as president for a number of years. Molla became a Heckscher Museum Docent in the 1980s, taking time out to raise her children. She never lost her connection and continued to support the Museum through her membership. Molla rejoined the Docent program and, for more than 25 years, she has shared her knowledge with Museum visitors and participated in Member events.

Her favorite piece from the Permanent Collection is Eclipse of the Sun by George Grosz. While Docent informational packets explain the history of the painting, Molla carries her own research with her: copies of pages from a book on George Grosz and a New York Times article on the painting. “I love talking to people and telling them about the artwork. I like to talk about the Grosz. I enjoy it when I am talking to a group and they themselves say, ‘It’s relevant today,’ and begin to share ideas with others in the group. It’s very exciting,” she said. Enjoy the rewards of membership! Join or renew today online at Heckscher.org/ support_join or contact Caitlynn Schare at 631.351.3006 or Schare@Heckscher.org.

OCTOBER 10 6 pm High School Portfolio Development Series, Part 2

I had the pleasure of talking with a number of high school artists at this year’s Long Island’s Best exhibition. As a former educator, I can say it is among my favorite Museum programs. The exhibition was outstanding and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing how a young person was creatively and intellectually inspired while visiting the galleries, and then motivated to create an exceptional artwork. It is gratifying to see the Museum bustling with students, teachers, parents, and the public honoring the work of these budding artists.

I am constantly learning from the Museum’s changing exhibitions and programs. The Emerging Artists Series celebrates up-and-coming Long Island artists. To hear an artist provide insight into their work is to discover new pathways of looking at and interpreting the world.

OCTOBER 20 1pm Family Hour Sunday OCTOBER 30 TO NOVEMBER 3 Trick or Treat at the Museum

I am passionate about K-12 Museum Discovery Programs! Many children do not have the opportunity to visit culturally significant places. Watching a child become 100 percent engaged and excited while learning through art is an exhilarating and memorable experience. All of this confirms what I know for certain—outstanding museums are not just found in big cities. We are fortunate. The Museum is alive with art and activity because of the support of our Members and Sponsors. As we approach the centennial in 2020 it is more important than ever to ensure that the mission of the Museum continues for current and future generations. We are only able to succeed in offering excellent exhibitions and programs thanks to your generosity and passion.

Locally Sourced kicks off the Museum's centennial celebration! The exhibition accentuates The Heckscher Museum of Art’s commitment to preserving and presenting the stories about Long Island artists through our Permanent Collection.

One gallery is devoted to Huntington artists and to those who visited, spotlighting important figures including Stan Brodsky, Mary Callery, Arthur Dove, Henry Fukuhara, John Marin, and Helen Torr. Another section of the exhibition traces formal, technical, and conceptual exchanges between artists of the East End such as Fairfield Porter and Jane Wilson. Landscapes predominate, whether captured through representation or

evoked through abstraction. Spanning the nineteenth century to the present, the show invites consideration of varied approaches to Long Island’s land, sea, and sky in works by artists such as Thomas Moran, Ty Stroudsburg, and Max Weber. To mark the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in America, the show revels in the remarkable work of locally and internationally renowned artists Betty Parsons, Esphyr Slobodkina, and Miriam Schapiro, among others. Visit to discover continuity and change across decades of Long Island art.

AN ARTIST ON LONG ISLAND We asked artist Christian White how Long Island inspires him and informs his work. “I grew up on Long Island’s North Shore, on an old, run-down estate, which ran down the hill to Stony Brook Harbor. We had no money, but we did have this sort of private realm of forest, fields, and beach, and I spent a lot of my childhood roaming that environment unsupervised. I came to realize that I had an emotional attachment to this place. I have spent much of my career trying to use the formal qualities of color, composition, perspective, gesture, and simplicity to convey those emotions. Most of my landscapes are about scale, perspective, and color ideas, all in the service of creating space. Often I get ideas Christian White, The Garden Wall, 1992, oil on linen. Gift of James Simons. from landscape that has just changed. I have a long-running series called “For the Least Tern” which are all painted on a nesting sanctuary at Nissequogue Point. It gets bulldozed and rebuilt every ten years or so with dredgings from the mouth of the Nissequogue River, meaning the cycle and patterns of dune plants start anew each time."

“THE GODFATHER” OF PULP FICTION ILLUSTRATORS THROUGH NOVEMBER 17 Catalogue Available Member $10, Non-Member $12 In Museum only A catalogue by Executive Director Michael W. Schantz, Ph.D., based on Mort Künstler: “The Godfather” of Pulp Fiction Illustrators is now available. It traces the artist’s early years as one of the most prolific illustrators for pulp fiction

magazines, and includes insight into his collaboration with Mario Puzo, author of The Godfather. “In the history of illustrated literature, the illustration would typically represent a scene from a manuscript that had already been written. However, when Künstler’s prowess as an illustrator was recognized… [the magazines] would begin to ask him to make an energy packed illustration of a certain topic that would then be given to one of the writers to create a story that included the action depicted in the illustration. One of those writers was Mario Puzo. Puzo remembers that “Bruce [Friedman] used to scare me to death and say we got the [illustration] and I hadn’t even started the story yet. Sometimes

you had to write a story because they had a good illustration; you’d build a story around it.” – Excerpt from Mort Künstler: “The Godfather” of Pulp Fiction Illustrators.

THE HECKSCHER MUSEUM ANNOUNCES ADDITIONS TO CURATORIAL AND DEVELOPMENT TEAMS

Clockwise: Karli Wurzelbacher, Christine Marzano, Caitlynn Schare

New appointments to the Curatorial and Development departments have brought unique professional experience to The Heckscher Museum of Art. “As we enter our centennial year in 2020, we have a full, talented, and professional team in place that will propel us forward into the next 100 years. I’m delighted to welcome these new additions to The Heckscher Museum,” said Michael W. Schantz, Executive Director and CEO. Karli Wurzelbacher joins The Heckscher Museum as Curator. An active scholar in the field of twentieth-century American art, Wurzelbacher was most recently a curatorial research fellow at The Baltimore Museum of Art, where she contributed to the first exhibition and publication on Jack Whitten’s sculpture, and to a forthcoming Joan Mitchell retrospective and book. As assistant curator at the Hunter College Art Galleries, Wurzelbacher co-curated the

exhibition Times Square Show Revisited. In curatorial roles at the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, she contributed to exhibitions on the work of Charles Burchfield and Murray Jones, among others. Wurzelbacher earned a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Delaware, where she also taught classes and curated the exhibit American Graphic: Picturing Social Change in the 1920s and 1930s at the University Museum. She holds an M.A. in Art History from Hunter College, CUNY, and B.A. degrees from Ohio State University. Her research and exhibitions have been supported by the Corning Museum of Glass, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center, the Keith Haring Foundation, and the Terra Foundation for American Art. Wurzelbacher is “excited to work with The Heckscher Museum’s strong holdings in American Modernism, and looks forward to fostering rich relationships with the Museum’s audiences.”

Caitlynn Schare has been named Development Manager and will work on increasing membership, and growing member programs and special events. Schare was most recently director of development at the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art in New York City. She has more than nine years of experience working in non-profits. Schare graduated from Adelphi University with a B.A. in Anthropology and minors in Art History and Forensic Anthropology, and holds an M.A. from New York University in Museum Studies. She has held positions at the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, and Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk. She enjoys “working on special events and members programming and looks forward to delving deeper into those interests at The Heckscher Museum.” Christine Marzano joins the Curatorial department as Registrar. She was previously registrar at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook. Marzano holds a B.A. in Fine Arts with a minor in Art History from SUNY Fashion Institute of Technology. She received an M.A. in Library Science from The Palmer School of Library and Information Sciences at C.W. Post, with concentrations in Rare Books and Special Collections and Records and Archives Management.

NEW ONLINE PORTAL INCREASES ACCESS TO PERMANENT COLLECTION Curious about the thousands of objects in The Heckscher Museum Permanent Collection? A new online portal is now live. This user-friendly platform provides visitors, students, scholars, and art lovers with a simple and intuitive way to explore the collection, accessing thousands of images quickly and easily. To access the collection portal, visit http://heckschercollection.org or go to “Collection” in the main navigation menu on Heckscher.org. In addition to searching by artist, date, and medium, visitors can sort by works of art that are currently on view, objects the Museum has added to the collection in recent years, and much more. The Adopt a Work section features artwork in need of conservation funding for upcoming exhibitions.

“Providing access to our collection is central to our mission as an educational institution and we are thrilled to have made this critical step forward." said Kristina Schaaf, Director of Visitor Experience. She also noted, “the portal is an extension of the Museum’s new collection database system, which we began utilizing earlier this year.”

THE HECKSCHER COLLECTS: JON SCHUELER

Christine Marzano, Registrar, explained, “the new database has vastly improved our overall collection management. Having public portal access to the database is icing on the cake.” The new portal is the first part of a complete update of the Museum’s website, which is planned to go live next year.

The Heckscher Museum is pleased to announce the acquisition of Sun Clouds, a work by Abstract Impressionist Jon Schueler (1916 –1992), through a donation from the artist’s estate. “When I speak of nature, I speak of the sky, because the sky has become all of nature to me.” Much of Schueler’s work is large-scale abstract painting balanced between abstract and representational, focusing on the sky as subject matter. Sun Clouds, 1956, is a powerful example of his use of the sky as landscape. Born in Wisconsin, Schueler studied at the California School of Fine Arts, where he worked with artist Clyfford Still, eventually moving to New York and further embracing Abstract Expressionism. He served as a pilot in WWII. Schueler drew inspiration from the landscapes and open vistas of Scotland, where he had a home and studio for many years.

Deborah Kirk Solbert, Laura Powers-Swiggett

HONORING DEBORAH KIRK SOLBERT AND LAURA POWERS-SWIGGETT October 19, 2019 Huntington Country Club Deborah Kirk Solbert is an artist and philanthropist who has been steadfast in her support of The Heckscher Museum, contributing to education and art conservation programs. She has always had an inclination for the fine arts. Her mother, Mrs. Alan Kirk, was a talented artist in her youth. Deborah has a similar natural talent. Largely self-taught, she eventually took classes whenever she could while raising a family of five children. She enjoys working in watercolors, oils, and pastels. Deborah shares her love of painting with her three daughters on regular art getaways both abroad and in the United States. Laura Powers-Swiggett has lived and painted on Long Island for most of her life. Its landscape and surrounding

waters are favorite sources of inspiration. Her abstract paintings are spontaneous explorations of color, light, and space that communicate her sense of wonder and joy in the natural world. Laura has exhibited widely on Long Island, including two Long Island Biennial juried exhibitions at The Heckscher Museum. She values her dialogue with other local artists, and is grateful that the Museum connects her more deeply to the work of those who have gone before. Laura believes that the Museum is an essential steward of Long Island’s art legacy, and an invaluable source of enrichment for both practicing artists and the broader community. Proceeds will benefit exhibitions and programs for emerging and established Long Island artists.
