Founded in 1877, the Tile Club was one of many artist societies established in the United States. The group met every Wednesday evening to talk about art and paint eight-by-eight inch ceramic tiles. They also took trips to Long Island and up the Hudson River to sketch and paint “en plein-air.” Above (clockwise from top left): George Schulman, Blue Angel, 2018 [detail], Oil paint, graphite, fabric, gold, and palladium leafing on wood; Nicholas Alberti, Wired #7, 2017 [detail], Acrylic on canvas; Winslow Homer, Resting Shepherdess, 1877 [detail], Partial Gift of Karen H. Long Island’s Best Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum April 6 - May 19, 2019 Don’t miss the chance to see this exhibit of extraordinary art created by young artists in the Long Island community. Each year, this exhibit challenges students in grades 9 through 12 to choose a work of art in the Museum as the starting point for their own creative exploration. Hundreds of students submit artwork, with approximately 80 selected for display.

Surface Tension Pictorial Space in 20th Century Art April 21, 2018 - May 12, 2019 At its core, art is about space. Every artist wrestles with the viewer’s understanding and perception of space and surface—regardless of whether they are painting a representational scene, creating an abstract composition, working three-dimensionally, or suggesting depth in a two-dimensional piece. Students explore a broad array of styles and subjects as they learn the many ways artists of the 20th century embraced, challenged, and ultimately redefined the concepts of space and surface in art. Above (clockwise from top left): Long Island’s Best 2018 exhibiting artist and Fourth Place Prize winner Rico Ford with his artwork and his art teacher Mario Bakalov; Joe Constantino, At the Station, 2001, printed 2009 [detail], Black and white negative scanned, enhanced and printed digitally using Photoshop. Gift of the Artist; Robert Richenburg, Flicker, 1949 [detail], Oil on canvas. Gift of the Artist; Richard Anuszkiewicz, Temple of Ochre, 1982 [detail], Acrylic on canvas. Gift of Lydie and Edward Shufro.

Enjoy this sweeping survey of American Impressionism featuring more than 50 paintings by artists including Childe Hassam, George Inness, Thomas Moran, John Sloan, Ernest Lawson, Daniel Garber and Guy Carleton Wiggins! This exhibition explores the ways in which artists interpreted America’s rural, maritime and urban spaces and portrayed daily life using the Impressionist devices of capturing the moment with brisk brushstrokes, a vibrant palette and atmospheric effects.

This Exhibition is made possible through the Bank of America Art in our Communities® program.

Grades K-8 IN MUSEUM Programs Aligned with the new New York State Standards for the Arts, programs in the galleries are a perfect introduction to the museum experience for young students. Professional museum educators guide classes as they make observations, use their imaginations, question what they see, and find evidence to support their opinions.

A rotating exhibition schedule ensures a rich and comprehensive experience for all students. Classes participate in multi-sensory activities in the galleries designed to reach a broad range of learners. A hands-on project reinforces key concepts and provides students with the opportunity to express their creativity.
