What’s Up? EXHIBITIONS 2019-2020

Mort Künstler: “The Godfather” of Pulp Fiction Illustrators Through November 17, 2019 Don’t miss this exhibition featuring more than 70 original illustrations by artist Mort Künstler from his private collection, almost all publicly exhibited for the first time! Renowned as America’s premier Civil War painter, Künstler established his career in the 1950s and ‘60s as a prolific illustrator of popular men’s adventure magazines. The works on view illustrate dramatic images of courage and physical prowess, capturing the post-war bravado of the American male psyche across a broad range of themes: man vs. animal, heists and escapades, military conflicts, and Cold War espionage.

A Fine Line Sketches, Drawings, and Illustrations from the Collection Through November 10, 2019 Whether they are preliminary sketches for a work in a different medium, or are the final product in their own right, drawings are a wonderful way to connect with the artistic process and delve into the fundamentals of mark-making. This exhibition features an array of drawings dating from 1875 to 1990.

What is an homage? Travel through time and explore how past and present meet in the homage works of contemporary figure painter Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso. Large-scale paintings and mixed media works pay tribute to great female painters from the Renaissance through the modern era using a variety of approaches. Dellosso often merges her likeness with those of women artists from the past, creating self-portraits that transcend time while conveying the inspiring stories of historical women. The exhibition also includes the artist’s Homage Ode series that is reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts and incorporates poetry.

Locally Sourced: Collecting Long Island Artists November 23, 2019 - March 15, 2020* *two galleries closed March 9 - 15 Kicking off our year-long centennial celebration, this exhibition underscores the museum’s commitment to preserving and presenting the stories of Long Island’s art through our permanent collection. The museum-wide display brings together painting, sculpture, photography, and works on paper by dozens of artists to explore the themes of place, dialogue among artists, and landscape, with special emphasis on the achievements of women artists of Long Island.

Long Island’s Best Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum March 21 - May 3, 2020 Don’t miss the chance to see this exhibition of extraordinary art created by young artists in the Long Island community. Each year, this arts-in-education program challenges students in grades 9 through 12 to choose a work of art in the Museum as the starting point for their own creative exploration. Hundreds of students will submit artwork, with 100 selected for display in honor of the Museum’s 100th Anniversary in 2020! Sponsored, in part, by The Darrell Fund Endowment.

This exhibition traces the Museum’s development from its founding in 1920 to today by celebrating transformational moments and important figures in our history. These include: August Heckscher, the construction of our landmark building, and the gift of our founding collection; George Grosz and the remarkable efforts of the community to purchase his work Eclipse of the Sun for the Museum in 1968; the achievements of Eva Gatling, the Museum’s pivotal director; and the Museum’s role in preserving the legacies of modern artists Arthur Dove and Helen Torr. The dynamic installation will feature masterworks spanning the 16th century to the present alongside photographs and archival material that illuminate the story of the Museum and its role in local, national, and even international history throughout the 20th century and beyond.
