High School Juried Exhibition
Guidelines 2016-2017 The only juried exhibition on Long Island that offers high school students the opportunity to show their work in a museum This prestigious juried exhibition features works of art created by Long Island high school students in grades 9-12, based on artwork shown in The Heckscher Museum of Art during the 2016-2017 school year. Approximately 80 works of art in various media will be exhibited in the Museum galleries March 11 through April 9, 2017. Prizes are awarded in several categories. All exhibiting students and their art teachers receive a complimentary copy of the exhibition catalogue featuring images of all artwork and student artist statements. All exhibiting young artists receive a Certificate of Exhibition and the art teachers of top award winners receive Outstanding Teacher Awards. The Museum would like to recognize the hard work and exceptional talent of all of the students who participate in Long Island’s Best. Images of all submissions that are not selected for exhibition will be shown in a digital display in the Museum for the duration of the exhibit. (See inside for details.)

To participate in this program, students must register through their schools. Each school must complete a School Participation Form and pay a non-refundable $25 registration fee. This entitles a school to four student entries, created and selected under the guidance of the art teacher(s).

Artist Statement Requirements As part of the Student Entry Form submission process, each student must write an artist statement (50 to 200 words) to accompany their artwork explaining the connection between the inspiration artwork seen in the Museum and student artwork being submitted. The statement plays a key role in the jurying process. For examples of artist statements, visit Heckscher.org/education_libest

To participate in this digital display, students must submit an image of their work in the Student Entry Form by February 17, 2017. • • • •
Image submissions will not be used for jurying purposes. All artwork must be handdelivered to the Museum for jurying. Image file must contain student’s full name, last name first. (Ex: Smith_John.jpg) Students may save and return to their Student Entry Form before final submission. Submitting an image is not required for submitting a Student Entry Form.

Submission Requirements • •

Student must be enrolled in grades 9-12 at a participating school in Nassau or Suffolk County, New York. Student artwork must be based on artwork shown in The Heckscher Museum of Art during the 2016-2017 school year and created and selected for submission under the guidance of the school’s art teacher(s). Each student may submit only one work of art. Collaborative pieces by more than one student count as one submission. Painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, photography, computer graphics, sculpture, video, and mixed media artwork may be submitted.
Size Requirements, Framing, and Pedestals Two-dimensional/ Wall-hanging artwork • •
Height and width (when added together) maximum of 64”. For example, 24” x 40” and 32” x 32” are acceptable sizes. Artwork must be ready to hang - framed, matted, wired, or otherwise prepared to be hung. Glass is required for works on paper.
Three-dimensional/ Free-standing artwork • •
Maximum 72” tall (including pedestal), 24” wide, 30” deep. The Museum supplies pedestals, as needed, to display three-dimensional work.

The Museum is not responsible for damage that may occur during the transportation or jurying of artwork. Students should protect artwork during travel.
Prepare students to enter Long Island’s Best! Visit us or we will visit your school for a Museum Discovery Program Students will: • Discuss how to find “inspiration” in professional artwork. • Discover the value of multiple interpretations of a work of art. • View student artwork from past Long Island’s Best exhibitions and the work of art from the Museum that inspired the student. • Read and discuss artist statements from past Long Island’s Best exhibitions. • View and discuss artwork that students may select from to be inspired for Long Island’s Best 2017 (in the Museum galleries or via PowerPoint).
