Inspiration for the 2023 Celebrate Achievement Benefit
ARTHUR G. DOVE, Old Post Office, Centerport, L.I. [detail], n.d., crayon on paper. Gift of Toni Dove.
This year’s Celebrate Achievement Benefit was inspired by the Museum’s upcoming exhibition, Salt Life: Arthur Dove and Helen Torr. Drawn from the collections of The Heckscher Museum of Art and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, TX, this exhibition presents rarely seen works on paper by the important twentieth-century American Modernists Arthur Dove (1880–1946) and Helen Torr (1886–1967). The exhibition explores the couple’s longstanding connection to Long Island and the natural environment, experimentation with materials and techniques, and the impact of Dove’s declining health on their art. Additionally, Salt Life affirms Torr’s place in early American modernism, and reveals new knowledge about her bold exploration of natural elements. For most of their years together, Arthur Dove and Helen Torr lived on and along the waterways of Long Island’s North Shore. They lived and painted on their boat, the Mona. In 1938, they settled at what is now the Dove/Torr Cottage in Centerport, a former post office and general store. Located on the banks of picturesque Titus Mill Pond, the cottage’s surroundings provided the subject matter–light, wind, water, and atmosphere–for some of Dove’s and Torr’s most inspired paintings. The exhibition coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Museum’s acquisition of the cottage, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and part of the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios, administered by the National Trust for
Inspiration for the 2023 Celebrate Achievement Benefit Historic Preservation. The property is featured on the Historic Artists’ Sites of Long Island website, lihistoricartistssites.org, made possible by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation.
1920s, Helen Torr, Huntington Harbor.
1924, Arthur Dove on board the Mona.
Approximately eighty artworks are featured in the exhibition, including some of Dove’s most acclaimed watercolors created during the last years of his life, when he was confined to his home and Torr was his primary caretaker. Torr ceased painting but continued to draw during this period. Her artistic career ended, due in part to the barriers that female artists faced, as well as the time she devoted to caring for Dove and supporting his work. The Heckscher Museum’s permanent collection includes HELEN TORR, Study for Evening Sounds, n.d., 36 paintings and drawings by Helen oil on paper. Gift of the Baker/Pisano Collection. Torr—the largest holding of the artist’s work anywhere. The Museum is dedicated to bringing public and scholarly attention to Torr’s career through exhibition and publication. In addition to works by Dove and Torr, this Journal also contains images of other artists who were inspired by the ocean and “salt life.” Salt Life: Arthur Dove and Helen Torr opens November 18, 2023.
