1. Third International Mathematics and Science Study: An Overview Michael O. Martin 1.1 INTRODUCTION The Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is the largest and most ambitious international comparative study of student achievement to date. Under the auspices of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), TIMSS brought together educational researchers from more than 50 countries to design and implement a study of the teaching and learning of mathematics and science in each country. TIMSS is a cross-national survey of student achievement in mathematics and science that was conducted at three levels of the educational system. Forty-five countries took part in the survey (see Figure 1.1). The students, their teachers, and the principals of their schools were asked to respond to questionnaires about their backgrounds and their
