Dorothy Knowles (1927-2023) was Canada’s premier painter of light. She dedicated her 70 year career to expressing the ephemeral subtlety and the expansive grandeur of the Canadian landscape in oil, acrylic, and watercolour. Directly influenced by the cutting edge abstractionists of the 1960s and 70s via the renowned Emma Lake Artists’ Workshops in north-central Saskatchewan, the modernity of her approach transcended the locales of her subject matter and brought her international acclaim.

Heffel is honoured to present Looking West, an intimate selection of Knowles’ depictions of Alberta and British Columbia, directly from the artist’s estate.
