Collection of the Artist Heffel Gallery Ltd., Toronto “I try to share my art and my life for all people to have a better understanding, for First Nations and all people to protect Mother Earth.” —Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Unceded Territories (2016 )

The painting of Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun (Lets’lo:tseltun), an artist of Cowichan (Coast Salish) and Okanagan (Syilx) descent, merges traditional iconographies with contemporary critique of the histories of colonial violence and environmental degradation. He incorporates a series of symbolic forms, drawing from both Salish cosmology and Western landscape tradition, to present the ongoing struggles for Indigenous sovereignty, land use rights, and improved social conditions. The resulting largescale canvases depict brightly coloured ravaged landscapes, populated by lonely wandering spirits, animate wildwood, monstrously masked super-predator executives, and abstracted ovoid forms—the dislocated building blocks of Northwest Coast visual design. At once playful and polemical, Yuxweluptun’s work stimulates important discussions about the long tail of colonial reckoning, Indigenous political critique, and spiritual and environmental awareness, and represents a leading example of contemporary Indigenous painting. In 1998, Yuxweluptun was the recipient of a VIVA Award from the Jack and Doris Shadbolt Foundation for the Visual Arts, and in 2019 Emily Carr University of Art + Design granted him an honorary doctorate in fine arts. His work is held in countless important public and private collections and has been exhibited globally, including at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, the Eiteljorg Museum, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, SITE Santa Fe, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Canada. In 2016, the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia presented Unceded Territories, a comprehensive retrospective of his work spanning 30 years.
