„… was ich Ihnen wünschte, wär‘ eine Stunde auf dem Heidelberger Schloß. Die imposanteste Ruine, in die herrliche Natur hineingebaut, von der üppigsten Gegenwart überwuchert … Gewiß ein Anblick, der auf dieser Welt nicht zum zweiten.“ Christian Friedrich Hebbel, 1836 "… what I wish would be an hour in the Heidelberg Castle. The impressive ruin, built into wonderful nature, grown over by lush present days… Certainly a view that is unique in this world."

As early as in the 19th century, Heidelberg cast its spell on poets such as Joseph von Eichendorff and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe with its romantic charisma. It was immortalized in many publications. Heidelberg has managed to preserve this irresistible magic to this day. The romantic Castle ruin with its large garden facility, the picturesque Old Town with its cozy alleys and squares and the River Neckar, idyllically winding its way through the green valley, draw several million guests to the city every year. Heidelberg is connected to its Castle – which served as the residence of the Prince Electors of the Palatinate for five centuries – as inseparably as with its more than 600-year-Old University. The city's history is ever-present. The Philosophenweg (Philosophers' Walk) on the sunny slope of the Heiligenberg (Holy Mountain), affording not only scholars a special view of the city, the river, the Alte Brücke (Old Bridge) and the Castle as well as the Königstuhl (King's Seat),which is nearly 600 meters high. 8 Out in old Heidelberg with the "Bürgersfrau" (citizen's wife)

9 Witches, oppressors, poor sinners: from Heidelberg's legal history

The court had rich meals back then, while the simple people had to lead a hand-to-mouth existence. They had to eat what they had, from a shared bowl. A citizen's wife will take you on a Tour through the city, talking about the everyday excitement in the Old Town and telling anecdotes from her life. Listen to her tales of the high ladies and gentlemen, and you may even catch a few juicy stories of the court.

Executions used to be true spectacles for everyone. In 1762, the university was closed to allow the students to attend an execution – a "revolting example". In this guided Tour, a "real" witch will take you through the centuries. On the way through the city, she reports of amusing regulations and gruesome punishments. City history not fit for children or weak nerves.

10 Through the dark alleys of Heidelberg with the night watchman

11 Witnesses of the times up close

Since the Middle Ages, the night watchman has ensured the safety of the citizens within the town walls. When the Romantics began to celebrate Heidelberg in songs and immortalize the enormous Castle ruins in copper engravings at the start of the 19th century, guests from all over the world came to the River Neckar. The night watchman protected them as well from robbers, fraudulent antiques dealers and other immoral offers. Walk through the alleys of the Old Town by the side of the night watchman while he tells you stories from days long forgotten.

What was it like back then, more than a hundred years ago, when people from around the world found themselves attracted by the Heidelberg myth? Mark Twain and Empress Elisabeth of Austria came to the city on the Neckar, and Viktor von Scheffel wrote his famous song "Alt-Heidelberg, du feine". The citizen's wife, funicular railway engineer and other figures have many surprising tales to tell about that, as well as about the life of the old Heidelberg residents. Why, for example, was the length of hat pins permitted on the funicular railway limited? Join us on a time travel and meet witnesses of the times who will let you experience things from the long-forgotten past in an entertaining manner. Enjoy the story while walking through the historical Old Town of Heidelberg and up to the world's most famous ruin.

Walking up the Philosophenweg, you will be rewarded with a wonderful view. 18 Luther Tour

19 Christmas Market Walking Tour

Heidelberg used to be a milestone on the way to Reformation – Luther's dangerous travel to Heidelberg in 1518 was his first theological appearance outside of Wittenberg after he had put up his 95 theses on October 31st, 1517. Invited by the Augustinian order and Prince Elector Ludwig V., he headed the Heidelberg Disputation in the local Augustinian monastery in April 1518, defending the basic ideas of his new theology – the complete dependence of man on the grace of God. This interesting walk will take you through the city in Luther's footsteps.

The scent of roasted almonds wafts through the alleys of the Old Town. Artistic craftspeople's work and wintery treats are offered from the magical little wooden booths – The Heidelberg Christmas Market with its individual booths is one of the most beautiful markets in Germany. Heidelberg's history, pre-Christmas traditions and Christmas anecdotes are part of this guided Tour. The walk will take you from the Marktplatz (Market Square) through the most beautiful corners of the Old Town to the Universitätsplatz (University Square).

Abtei Stift Neuburg (Abbey Stift Neuburg) Embedded in the Neckar Valley, surrounded by a lush green and with a wonderful view of the meandering river and the slopes of the Odenwald, the monastery attracts locals and guests alike. The Benedictine abbey was founded by the monastery Lorsch in 1130. It was struggling with its bad economic situation until the monastery was dissolved in 1562. For a long time, the building was given to different uses thereafter, among others as the "Jungfern-Stift", where women from noble families were to live together as a "community of virtuous women" (therefore, it is called the "Stift Neuburg" to this day). Since 1927, monks have been living here again according to the rules of Saint Benedict. The monastery includes a farm shop with regional organic products and a small organic brewery. Following the rules of their Benedictine order, the monks focus on pastoral work, supporting and meeting with guests through diverse cultural offers such as concerts or lectures on contemporary subjects. Other Information: www.stift-neuburg.de.
