September 20, 2019 – May 10, 2020 Special exhibition in the Friedrich Ebert Memorial “Demokratie als Lebensform. Eine Wanderausstellung zu Theodor Heuss und Elly Heuss-Knapp”. Theodor Heuss was elected the first Federal President in 1949. He had previously helped to shape the German Constitution and, as a liberal journalist and politician, championed democracy in Germany. The special exhibition “Democracy as a way of life. A traveling exhibition on Theodor Heuss and Elly Heuss-Knapp” in the Friedrich Ebert Memorial follows the first German Federal President and his wife through five epochs of German history. Numerous objects and playful elements help discover two people who were guided by the de mocratic and liberal ideas of their time and who, in accordance with these ideas, actively contributed to the shaping of Germany. January 2 – 11, 2020 Heidelberger Klavierwoche (Heidelberg Piano Week) The Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut (DAI, German-American Institute) hosts the annual Heidelberger Klavierwoche (Heidelberg Piano Week) in cooperation with the “Jahrhundertwende-Gesellschaft”. Renowned pianists and prestigious young talents perform as guests here. The Heidelberger Klavierwoche is a constant in the classical music scene, now for the 32nd time. January 22 – February 1, 2020 Carambolage: the Cabaret and Comedy Festival Smart entertainment between cabaret and comedy is at the focus of this festival in the Kulturhaus Karls torbahnhof. February 1 – 8, 2020 Theater festival ¡Adelante! Once again, ¡Adelante! will feature extraordinary guest performances from Latin America and Spain, whose empowerment strategies reflect the cultural struggles (for survival) within the respective societies on the most diverse levels. The centerpiece of the second edition of ¡Adelante! will be the multinational cooperation project “La flauta mágica / The Magic Flute”. For the staging by Antú Romero Nunes, actors and musicians from Heidelberg, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay and Italy will be co-performing. February 29 – April 26, 2020 Biennale for Contemporary Photo graphy – “The Lives and Loves of Images” The photo event of the year: The Biennale for Contemporary Photo graphy has received international acclaim. In 2020, British photo expert and curator David Campany selected famous and new talents. Four exhibition houses in the metropolitan region are participating. The Heidelberger Kunstverein (Heidelberg Art Society) presents works by international stars such as Thomas Ruff, Sebastian Riemer or Clare Strand.

March 21 – April 24, 2020 Heidelberger Frühling The festival “is part of the first league of festivals for classical music” (ZEIT), presenting great soloists, ensembles and orchestras and the best young artists in far more than 100 events. As the Stadthalle (City Hall) cannot be played due to the renovation, the “Heidelberger Frühling” 2020 will move into the city and establish a festival campus in the Old Town. The festival center, an orangery building on the centrally located University Square, will take center stage. As manager of the chamber music academy, Pianist Igor Levit can be met at the chamber music festival “Standpunkte” (standpoints). In addition to Thomas Hampson’s Lied Akademie (Song Academy), there will be a four-day song festival called “Neuland.Lied” (New Territory Song). March 25 – July 12, 2020 Hercules – Immortal Hero Hercules, son of Zeus and the mortal Alkmene, remains an ambivalent hero to this day. His power is as proverbial as his lack of self-control. An object of religious veneration in ancient times, he was considered a powerful champion of good in the Middle Ages and early Modern Era. In Heidelberg he stands as a symbol for the Prince Elector. The Kur pfälzisches Museum (Palatinate Museum) Heidelberg is now dedicating a large special exhibition to him in 2020 with spectacular loans from Basel, Rome, Naples and Turin.

March 25 – August 16, 2020 Fragile Treasures of the Prinzhorn Collection In addition to the museum's newly established permanent exhibition, several drawings, oil paintings, books, textiles and collages from the unique holdings of the Prinzhorn Collection will be on display. These extraordinary works established the collection's worldwide fame. Their increasingly fragile condition prohibits the permanent presentation and loan to other museums. April 24 – 27, 2020 4th Gourmet & Wine Festival In the springlike castle, celebrity chefs and top winemakers gather again for the yearly “Treat Summit”. This year's motto: “Kitchen heroes and cooking legends from Austria, Germany and the region.” Celebrity chef Sascha Stemberg is the star of the kick-off kitchen party “Bergisches Land meets Baden cuisine”. Cooking legend Harald Wohlfahrt and Martin Scharff co-create a 6-course gourmet menu, and Austria's great chef Richard Rauch serves “Nose to Tail” specialties. A cheerful conclusion is the kitchen party “The Finale: The best of Heidelberg and the region” with regional top chefs and the Weiße Burgunder Charta (White Burgundy Charter).

April 24 – May 3, 2020 Heidelberger Stückemarkt – the theater festival On 10 days in spring, the Heidelberger Stückemarkt (Heidelberg Play Week) will be presenting the avantgarde of theatre since 1984: New plays will be read and outstanding premieres from the German-speaking world are invited for guest performances. This fosters social debate and reflects the aesthetic tendencies of our theatrical landscape. In 2020, the host country will be Lithuania. May 15 – June 19, 2020 Exhibition: Nadira Husain Nadira Husain is the winner of the WERK.STOFF Prize for Painting by the Andreas Felger Culture Foundation and the Heidelberger Kunstverein. In her paintings on canvas, paper and textiles, historical Indian pictorial traditions are interwoven with contemporary imagery. V.” The special exhibition “Europa, der Krieg und ich – 100 Jahre Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V.” (Europa, the war and I – 100 years of Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V.) in the Friedrich Ebert Memorial shows the development of the Kriegsgräberfürsorge (German War Graves Commission) and the importance of commemorative culture. The exhibition covers a far range of time, from the beginning of the Kriegsgräberfürsoge in Europe’s late 19th century, through the concrete tasks that arose from the carnage of the two world wars, to the “reconciliation above graves” and today's first approaches to European co-remembrance. June 14 – August 2, 2020 Heidelberger Schlossfestspiele Amidst the mountains it towers: Heidelberg Castle, one of the most beautiful sights in Germany. As a popular tourist attraction, it also stages the Heidelberg Schlossfestspiele (Castle Festival), organized by the Theater and Orchestra Heidelberg. Every summer, the ancient walls are filled with musical sounds and famous works from the whole world of theatre, sometimes tragic, sometimes funny and always featuring new highlights. Besides the horror classic “Dracula”, “Im weissen Rössl” (The White Horse Inn) seems as if it was made for the castle courtyard. “Die Verzauberten Brüder” (The Bewitched Brothers) await younger audiences in the Englischer Bau (English Building), and the Philharmonic Orchestra plays its traditional castle concerts.

June 26, 2020 NCT-RUNning against cancer This event does not only take a stand against cancer, but sets an example for health and the community in general. Everybody is allowed to participate, everybody can help, no matter if slow or fast, alone or in a team with colleagues, family and friends. Record times or performances do not matter on the circuit. Last year, more than 5,500 runners entered the half marathon, the 10-kilometer run and the NCT lap race.

July 3 – 17, 2020 METROPOLINK Since 2015, the Heidelberg street art festival METROPOLINK has been changing the city's image. By now, curator Pascal Baumgärtner has brought more than 50 renowned artists from all over the world to the city, including stars of the scene such as Bordalo II, Hendrik Beikirch, Sam3 and Herakut. House fronts are transformed into works of art. The festival, under the patronage of Heidelberg's Lord Mayor Prof. Dr. Eckart Würzner, is tightly connected with the city's development. METROPOLINK understands artistic interventions in public space as a possibility to win it back for the community. July 10 – 11, 2020 26th ADAC Heidelberg Historic In Sinsheim, the 26th ADAC Heidelberg Historic starts. Equipped with a stopwatch and a good amount of finesse, the tour takes you on a tour through the region for two days. Two rally days with memorable impressions for participants and spectators. The organization team of the ADAC Nordbaden e. V. has prepared two stages of about 260 kilometers each and probably 18 special stages, which will lead the participants on about 180 vintage cars through the Kraichgau, Black Forest and the Kurpfalz, and on the second day through the Bauland, Madonnenland and Zabergäu. Start and finish is at the Technik Museum (Technology Museum) Sinsheim. As per tradition, the rally break is set in front of the Town Hall on Friday.

July 26, 2020 HeidelbergMan Triathlon Every year, professional triathletes, age group athletes and relay participants enter one of the toughest and most attractive short distance triathlons in Germany. Last year, Ironman World Champion Sebastian Kienle participated as well. He had to admit defeat to local hero Maximilian Saßerath. And this is exactly what makes triathlon and Heidelberg so appealing: a tough route and a great starting field. On Sunday, July 26, 2020, at 9.30 am, the starting signal for the 28th HeidelbergMan will be given. October 9 – 18, 2020 French Week Every year, Heidelberg hosts the French Week with about 50 events related to German-French culture in almost all cultural subjects. October 18, 2020 – February 7, 2021 Friedrich Dürrenmatt – Caricatures Dürrenmatt's humor runs like a red thread through his written and pictorial work. Outside his legendary literary work, Dürrenmatt was an enthusiastic graphic artist and painter throughout his whole life. Among his graphic work, caricatures form the largest thematic group. Not only did he prefer this genre; he especially enjoyed the speed and spontaneity that this art type allowed him. Profoundness and humor. That's what cabaret is standing for. November 23 – December 22, 2020 Heidelberger Weihnachtsmarkt (Heidelberg Christmas Market) The Heidelberger Weihnachtsmarkt, embedded in the Baroque Old Town, with the world-renowned Castle shining above it, is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany. The festively decorated cottages make the former residential town shine on various squares in the historical Old Town, offering an atmospheric sea of lights in one of the longest pedestrian zones in Europe.
