A NEW BIKE PARADIGM RE-INHABIT CARLSBERG COMMUNITY

“ If we are friendly with the people and make cities that people would like to use, would like to walk and cycle in, we will get lively cities. We get safe cities, when more people use the public spaces. “ JAN GEHL: MAKING HEALTHY CITIES DANISH ARCHITECTURE CENTRE January 21, 2014

THE HUB

Imagine starting a life in Carlsberg Byen where your daily ritual involves walking and bicycling to work and grocery, to meet friends at a rooftop patio on weekends, and to take kids from school to play at the plaza. In the quintessential bike city - Copenhagen, Carlsberg is a place, where public health, happiness and a vision toward the future is prioritized over an individual’s car, air pollution and vehicular traffic flow. It is where young girls in stilettos travel by bike on their way to a party or businessmen in suits go to work. The relocated metro station at Carlsberg Byen supports the city-wide initiative to walk and bike instead of relying on the automobile.

Phase 2 The first phase prioritizes the establishment of the district identity by building out the core node in the center of the site with key anchor structures at major circulation junctions. Improved bridge connection on Throop will encourage people to explore the new Alloy District from surround urban corridors, such as extended 606 trail and expanded transit options.

BEING ON THE TOP DESIGN FOR ALL AGES OF PEOPLE AND THE FUTURE GROWTH

Alice Sweet Thomas Park, located along the APEX recreation district, is a underused 4 acres open space, due to the defined sports courts and crucial topography difference. The design utilized the grading change, caused by the covered 10-million gallon water tank, to honor and reveal the local context and history.

VIEWSHED ANALYSIS BY HEIDI LIU

ALICE SWEET THOMAS PARK Arvada is a fast-growing suburb to the northwest of Denver. Arvada rents have risen more quickly than any other metro Denver city, jumping 8.9 percent in the past year, according to Apartment List’s April 2016 report. The population boom brings both development opportunities and challenges. Arvada’s reports highlighted a great mount of aging population, as well as high demand of accessible parks in 1/4-1/2 mile.

Arvada’s population is also aging and becoming more diverse. This, coupled with a projected decline of park level of service, are critical trends that inform the following chapters, recommendations and performance measures.
