Weddi ngs are complex events and hold so much creative poten tial, it's hard not to feel overwhelmed by all the possibilities out there. Yet, through all their complexities, one thing holds certa in.

Heirlooms are intrinsic and integral to our lives, whether they are ones that have been handed down from one generation to the next, or those that are in the process of being created.

Heirloom Magazine was lovingly created to showcase the highlights of such traditions . Whether it's your mother's wedding gown, your grand dad's walking stick, or a handmade robin's nest ring cradle recently acquired from Etsy, these tokens hold memories and tell precious stori es for many years to come. …WELL, THEIR STORY WAS YOUR NOT TYPICAL DATEFOR-TWO-YEARS-AND-GET-ENGAGED KIND OF STORY. IT WAS MUCH MORE COMPLICATED THAN THAT, BUT THEN AGAIN, WHAT'S THE FUN IN BEING JUST NORMAL? It was June 2011. Kristal had just started a new job at the Twisted Tomato in Kelowna as a hostess. She loved her job, but even more so when Scott started working there on June 28th. He had recently moved to the Okanagan from Calgary on a whim and was hired to work as a bartender. Initially he was just going to stay in Kelowna for the summer, but that suddenly changed when he and Kristal laid eyes on each other.

Scott recalls it was when Kristal was helping him put away wine bottles at work when he got lost in her eyes and he knew that she was “the one.”

HE WAS NOT LIKE ANYONE SHE HAD EVER MET BEFORE. HE TREATED HER SO NICELY, WAS SO POLITE. HE WAS A TRUE GENTLEMAN TO HER AND HAD THE SAME GEEKY PERSONALITY AS SHE DID.

ONE NIGHT SCOTT SAID TO KRISTAL “I KNEW YOU WOULD COME BACK, I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO BE MINE EVEN WHEN YOU WEREN’T AT THE TIME."

AT THAT MOMENT KRISTAL KNEW THAT SCOTT WAS THE ONE FOR HER.

On their first date Scott took her to a restaurant called The Bohemian Cafe. There they talked about video games, their futures, their dreams and what they wanted in life… in the back of both their minds it was each other. After work they would take long walks and spend as much time together as they could.

At the end of the summer Kristal decided to move out of town and this decision broke Scott’s heart. Deep inside Kristal felt like it was a huge mistake. A few months went by and one day at Kristal’s new job she was cutting limes just the way Scott had shown her how. She sent Scott a text message saying “cutting limes and thinking of you.” To her surprise she got a response. After a few weeks of texting it became phone calls, and after phone calls it resulted in Kristal moving back to Kelowna to be with Scott in January 2012.

IT HAD BEEN FIVE MONTHS SINCE THEY HAD SEEN EACH OTHER. WHEN SCOTT ARRIVED TO PICK KRISTAL UP, IT WAS LIKE A DAY HADN'T GONE BY. THEY SPENT HOURS CATCHING UP AND LAUGHING JUST LIKE BEFORE. WHEN IT SEEMED LIKE SCOTT HAD FINALLY GOTTEN KRISTAL BACK, SHE DECIDED TO TAKE A TRIP TO MEXICO WITH HER PARENTS FOR TWO WEEKS. That didn’t stop Scott from messaging her every day while she was gone and making sure she knew he was interested. When Kristal arrived back in Kelowna it was February 6th, her birthday, and Scott had something special planned for her. He had spent hours decorating cupcakes with cute animals just for Kristal because cupcakes are her favourite.

Weeks went by and Scott and Kristal were seeing each other every day. The sparks were flying! Kristal's parents loved Scott right from the beginning, and Kristal, herself, was starting to fall in love.

It was on February 14th that Kristal had another trip planned, but this time it was to the Philippines for four months. Scott knew he had to do something so Kristal would know his true feelings. So he said, "I love you, and I knew the moment I met you that we would be together. You're the one for me."

WHILE KRISTAL WAS AWAY SCOTT SENT HER MESSAGES VIA WHATSAPP, FACEBOOK AND DAILY SKYPE DATES. WHEN KRISTAL FLEW INTO VANCOUVER, SCOTT WAS THERE IN THE ARRIVALS TERMINAL WITH A BIG BOUQUET OF FLOWERS AND DRESSED IN A SUIT. ON JUNE 29TH 2012, SCOTT AND KRISTAL WERE IN THE HOT TUB WHEN SHE SAID, "SO…" TO WHICH SCOTT REPLIED, "WHATEVER IT IS, YES, LET'S DO IT." “Well, I think we should get married at the end of the summer.”

"Yeah, sure, let's do it. Does this mean I should ask your Dad?"

"Yeah, that's typically how it goes."

"Well, Kristal… will you marry me?"

"YES!" Fast forward a few days later. Scott talked to his parents, after which he started questioning the idea of getting hitched in a month. He had a lot of family from out of town, and it didn't seem fair to go and have a wedding without the people who he felt should be there.

On the 1st of July, Scott went over to Kristal's house and said, "I know you want to get married by the end of the month, but I really think we should wait and prepare for a year. I knew I was going to be with you the rest of my life when I met you, and I don't want to be with anybody else but you. You make me a better person, and that's why I love you." Then he got down on one knee, properly this time, and said, "Kristal, will you marry me?" "Of course I will," Kristal replied a second time.

They lit off fireworks in celebration.

All eyes are on the bride when she walks down the aisle, but at the reception, the cake is sure to be on the receiving end of admiring glances Kien Nguyen, owner and designer of Kien and Sweet creates cakes that are much more than just something to slice and eat - they are works of art.

“I’m the type of artist that works better if I’m given the freedom to explore my creativity,” said Kien. “I don’t like being put in a box and told what I should do.”

Her distinct work is unparalleled. She has baked all her life, starting by out making sweet treats for her friends and family. She realised her passion when she traveled across the country to explore her love for cake design. To her surprise it became an artistic outlet. Some things are just meant to be and that’s where Kien and Sweet began.

What was your inspiration for this shoot?

“I incorporated vintage, romantic, girly elements like flowers, ruffles and patterns, ” she explained. “I love classic all white designs, but I also like adding a pop of colour into my cakes.”

FASHION IS KIEN’S BIGGEST INSPIRATION; THINK INTRICATE WEDDING DRESSES, COUTURE GOWNS AND FANCY FABRICS. SHE IS ALSO INSPIRED BY FURNITURE AND HOME DÉCOR. “I love crown moulding and French country baroque style pieces. The white cake was inspired by a Rococo bed frame that I loved so much that I turned it into a cake.”

The design of the three-tiered silver cake was created with fabric and flowers in mind.

"I haven't showcased a lot of my flowers before, so I wanted to do something unique. I came up with a winter theme using blues and whites, and I incorporated fabric details into the cake, so that's where the inspiration for the top tier came from."

MOST ELEMENTS IN HER CAKES ARE HAND CRAFTED, INCLUDING THE LIFELIKE FLORAL ACCENTS AS WELL AS THE HANDPAINTED ILLUSTRATIONS AND PATTERNS. When creating a cake, she starts with a rough idea of how it will look. Before she has a concrete plan, her vision changes by doing a sketch and testing out things that may or may not work.

The best part of the job is the artistic aspect of it all. “Using my creativity and putting it into something that’s edible is fabulous.”

This girl definitely has a keen eye for detail.

Kien also gets a lot of her ideas for her designs by using elements from each couple’s wedding plans including the invitations, the dress and the decor, which is perfect as most clients want a bit of themselves embodied into their cake.

"I love working with people. I ask each couple if there is any little detail they want to add to make their own - things that maybe nobody else would notice unless they looked up close."

ONE BRIDE USED TO DRAW LITTLE DUCKS IN HER FIANCÉE’S NOTEBOOK WHEN THEY FIRST MET AND SHE WANTED TO INCORPORATE THAT INTO HER CAKE – JUST AS A SWEET PERSONAL DETAIL THAT NOBODY REALLY KNEW WAS THERE BUT THEM. “I love incorporating the bride and groom’s personalities or anything that represents them as a couple into my work.”

They grew up only blocks apart in Campbell River, attended the same elementary school and knew many of the same people in a rather small town. But their paths never truly crossed until they met while working at a fishing lodge on Langara Island, in Haida Gwaii, nearly ten years ago.

They spend many of their days on the water, and feel most alive when they're by the sea. Their most brilliant memories involve the ocean and its huge part it played in both of their family traditions, whether it be fishing, working or walking the shoreline.

They wanted to be married on the water and ultimately the ocean was where it truly felt like home to them both.

Their hearts live in two of their favourite places - Nootka Sound and Haida Gwaii - and Nootka Sound was perfect.

They were tucked away in a private setting with an amazing menu, fishing rods were cast, kayaks were in the water, and they were surrounded by their closest people enjoying all the things they love.

FROM THE BEGINNING, THEY KEPT coming BACK TO THAT IDEA - IT'S THEIR DAY, AND THEY GET TO CELEBRATE IT THEIR WAY. "We did what felt most like "us", what we were most comfortable with. We knew these were our memories, our traditions, and we don't necessarily have to fit with anyone else's ideas of what a wedding is or should be."

favourite moments She loved every moment of it. Waking up to clear blue skies after what felt like weeks of rain.

Putting finishing touches together throughout the afternoon whilst their families surrounded them, kayaking, eating delicious foods, lazing in the sun and just loving the west coast life - it all felt effortless.

Her dad dropping them off by boat, and then wandering around on a tiny island with Ryan. Just the two of them in the middle of their favourite place was incredible.

Their adventurous families and wild-hearted dog tipping and teetering on the private dock while they said their vows, that meant the world to them.

Sitting down to family dinner on a cozy outdoor deck with their most cherished people. Sharing stories and memories and heartfelt words about their history.

She can remember individual moments with each person there, and that means everything to her. Every time she looked back through their photos, she felt every moment again, with so much love.

treasured details She loves to create. She loves to collect. She loves things to be unique.

From revamping a family heirloom wedding dress, tying feathers for her bouquet and boutonnieres, to wood burning name plates in driftwood collected on the beaches of Nootka Sound‌ she had the most fun ever putting together all the details.

She designed and sent invitations, even though family were the only invites.

That's how much she loved things in print.

With her creative partner in crime for the day, she put together individual table settings and centrepieces. It was a spontaneous affair of organised chaos. She added fresh cut flowers to the mix alongside found and bought treasures - it was their way of making art.

It was from many a random meeting around and about Toronto for quite a while before he finally summoned up the nerves to ask her out. When they were both set to move to Montreal for university, it was as if the stars had aligned, and their paths have not been the same since.

When he finally proposed after years of living together, they knew that they had always wanted to get married outdoors, and couldn't picture a more beautiful setting than the gardens at Hycroft Mansion.

favourite moments Anthony couldn't put his finger on a favourite moment. The whole day was so much fun. They were surrounded by people they love on a day with perfect weather at a great venue for a big party with lots of good food and drinks.

And he was getting married to the love of his life. It couldn't have been better.

Kyla's favourite element was having so many family and friends in one place.

They are both from Toronto, and have friends and family scattered around the globe. Having all of the people they love gathered together in one room to share in their day was an amazing and overwhelming experience.

treasured details Kyla and Anthony were both drawn to the vintage look, but still wanted to keep their details light and fun. They combined a lot of classic elegant elements with a bright modern colour palette, and threw in other quirky details that reflected both of their personalities.

A designer by trade, Kyla loves playing with colour and themes, and enjoyed envisioning and crafting many of the details of the decor, whilst occasionally drawing from Heirloom Magazine for inspiration.

Initial obsessions over which invitation vendors to use turned into an epiphany that they could, in fact, make their own.

You might say it got a little bit out of hand from there.

Lindsay had always loved the idea of homemade cards, gifts and whatnots, and being in her last year of medical school, used it as an excuse to procrastinate almost endlessly. It also helped that David was a Photoshop wiz and had a great eye for graphics.

So, many episodes of "Four Weddings" and a few packs of pencil crayons later, they had crafted magnetic save-the-dates, invitations complete with temporary tattoos, a program which included the usual elements as well as a crossword puzzle, mad libs and trivia about the two of them, wedding speech bingo cards, escort cards and hand drawn place settings with a caricature of each guest, amongst other printables.

favourite moments Though they thought they had prepared for everything, they couldn't possibly have anticipated how emotional the day would be. More than anything, they are so happily in love and thrilled to be married, and will always look back on their wedding day with the very warmest and fuzziest of feelings.

treasured details One of her favourite ideas was the guest book cards. They've been enjoying a message from each guest about once a month, and will continue to get those messages for the next forty years!

They ended up with a wedding that was wonderfully personal, fun and yellow.

What made it particularly special was having all of their favourite people in the same room, cheering them on.

She really wanted a place that was big enough for all of her family and friends. As they drove up to the ranch, she knew in her heart of hearts that she really, really wanted it to be THE place.

It was way out down a gravel logging road. As they drove along the path, she was reminded of growing up in Northern Ontario and all her days of tree planting.

The trees, the lake and the mountains around the campsite were all so breathtaking. She knew she could totally relax at the ranch and have a lot of fun.

favourite moments They had lots of time to visit and hang out before the big party. She loved walking around after the ceremony and watching people relax and enjoying themselves in so many ways. Some were lying out and about, reading or sun tanning. Or playing soccer. Or with the goats. Or eating and drinking.

And they also had a wine and cheese jazz hour around five to get everyone back into the festive mood. This was just outside the hall and may have been her favourite moment. Cheese galore and good friends playing sweet jazz!

It was exactly what they wanted.

treasured details They visited a lot of thrift stores. She bought hundreds of old glass candle sticks, collected old books, old plates (yes, they brought their own dinnerware, they all had to have vintagey flowers on them and yes, that was crazy), tons of old bed sheets for bunting and backdrops.

Her mom and sister made linen napkins out of old fabric - and the list went on and on.

It was really a labour of love by a lot of people who loved them to pull it all off.

The funny thing was, she thinks they started off thinking that they would just go DIY to save money and keep it simple, but in the end, it really shaped the experience of their day.

Vivien and alan Both being nature-lovers, these two lovebirds wanted to have as much greenery and woods at their wedding as possible. They also wanted their two dogs, Bibi & Bobo, who played an especially important role in their lives, to be included in their wedding, so holding their ceremony in Stanley Park was a natural choice.

Vivien and Alan have never been big fans of anything too glamorous and fancy, so birds, ferns and logs as wedding accents suited them well.

favourite moments She was especially pleased when one of their guests said to her, "Your wedding looks like it's out of a Bambi movie!"

She also loved that her photographer captured them saying their vows to each other as if they were in a forest - that was a very special treat!

treasured details She particularly enjoyed making the unique log centrepieces for each table.

They collected logs from the beach and also from the trails they walked their dogs on during their dating days. They decorated each log with twigs, feathered birds and nests. She remembers saying "This is my new favourite!" every time they finished a centrepiece.

They filled the rest of their wedding details with spring colours and birdrelated items, like hand painted birdhouses, hoping to bring the feeling of spring to their wedding, like the renewal of love they have for each other after long years together.

Your sweet table should tell a story that is seamlessly incorporated into the rest of your celebration and its identity. This is where you have an opportunity to be creative and play around with surfaces on which you will set up your dessert bar - linens, accessories, flowers, or a backdrop that may communicate a message of love or value that is significant to you. Be creative and express yourself!

Build your menu around your favourite desserts and confection.

Look to offer a mix of homemade, catered, and purchased candies and/or desserts. Easy to serve and bite-sized desserts such as cupcakes, cake pops, petit fours, cookies, specialty chocolates, and dessert shooters help create an inviting sweet table. Share a family heirloom; perhaps Grandma has a family recipe for delicious shortbread cookies?

labeling & identification

Follow a pyramid-like schematic for your sweet table. Taller vessels should be placed at the back of the table and get progressively shorter towards the front of the surface you are using. Strive for symmetry or pattern in the way you arrange your containers. And don't be afraid to experiment!

Move your vessels around until you find the perfect layout for your vision.

IdentIfy containers

Food labels take the guess work out of what is being served.

Specify items that might not meet dietary restrictions (gluten-free, sugar-free or kosher, etc.). Labels should integrate with your theme and be a part the “story� your dessert table tells.

ingredients:

4 large egg whites, room temperature 1 cup sugar pinch of salt

1 tsp cornstarch 2 tsp white vinegar 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 1 cup heavy cream, whipped 2 cups of berries, or fruit of choice

MULTI-LAYERED PAVLOVAS MAKE A VERY IMPRESSIVE DESSERT; PERFECT FOR A SPECIAL OCCASION SUCH AS YOUR WEDDING CELEBRATION!

method:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Using an 8-inch pan or plate as a guide, trace the perimeter of the circle onto a sheet of parchment paper. Transfer parchment paper to a baking sheet. Set aside.

2. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat egg whites and salt together until glossy peaks form. With mixer running, gradually add sugar and continue beating until meringue is stiff and glossy.

When meringue is ready, it should feel firm to touch, as though it will crack if you press hard. It should not be springy or bouncy.

5. Turn off the oven and let meringue cool for about 15 minutes in the oven. Remove from oven and let it cool completely. Meringue can be made a day in advance. Keep it in a cool dry place until ready to serve.

4. Empty the meringue onto the center of the 8-inch circle. Using a spatula, evenly spread meringue out

In life, as in weddings, we’re forced to make decisions, some seemingly easily, others requiring great contemplation, reflection and ultimately compromise. With all my clients, I’m sure to remind them with every decision, that it’s their ultimate goal they need to keep in mind - building a marriage even more beautiful than their wedding! I encourage them to approach decision making with the "three most important rule" at heart,, focusing on making what matters most happen, and forgetting all the rest in that very moment. It sometimes means saying no, so you can say yes to so much more.

With the wrap of Heirloom’s second issue production, I found myself in the shoes of my clients, needed to take my own advice and bravely acknowledge I needed to make a change - compromises that would allow me the time, energy and focused passion to go in the direction God is leading me.

Heirloom started as a dream, one to inspire local brides to create a wedding that truly and uniquely wrote their love story out loud and set it on fire for the world to see. I wanted them to know that no matter their budget, whether their vendors were their family, up and coming artists or seasoned professionals, there were people in our industry who cared enough to point them in the right direction, offer advice and celebrate the beauty of their one-of-a-kind love! Even more so, I wanted to create a community for our local wedding industry, where people could come as themselves, no walls, no facades and share their passion with the world. To me, it doesn’t matter whether you’ve been at it six months or 30 years, have never been published on a blog or in a magazine or whether you know and associate with who’s who in the zoo! What matters is your heart, your authenticity and your desire to make peoples dreams come true through your art! After all, isn’t that what we all do as wedding professionals; work to set a still moment in time on fire, to be remembered and treasured forever?

2012 was a year of abundant blessings and growth for both my Wedding Planning Company, Kailey Michelle Events, as well as Heirloom Magazine. And as Heirloom continues down that path and I feel honoured to have helped give this bird wings.

But I must continue to watch it soar from a distance.

God is paving the way for more than this little lady could ever hope for and I plan to continue giving Him the reins in all my efforts, both personally and professionally. I pour my heart into my work, giving it 1000% of what I have and this growth requires my focused attention and dedication in serving KME clients and training my growing team. While my decision to step down as Chief Powerhouse was bittersweet, knowing it’s in the hands of a powerful and dedicated team made it easier.

Thank you, our dear community for your tireless support, your genuine enthusiasm and thriving talent. People like you are the heart of what we do and I pray you would be blessed by all this community offers and continue to encourage and lift each other up!

This won’t be the last you’ll see of me here. Heirloom remains a place I plan to come, to share my talents and inspire both brides and vendors alike.
