Call 663-9301 or Email: sonny@sonny-penhale.com Congratulations to all our little league boys’ and girls’ teams who won or placed highly in tournaments this summer. I am especially proud of the Helena 6U team, who I was privileged to sponsor, as this group of young girls won the State Championship at Liberty Park! You can read all about the exciting championship tournament that they won the hard way. They fought through the losers bracket after dropping a game the first day only to come back and win seven straight games with a 100 degree heat index on Saturday to claim the title. These girls were on a mission and made their city proud! I am happy to report that so far this year, we have had twice as many new housing starts as this time a year ago! Local Realtors® tell me that things are looking up in the housing market, and with interest rates being as low as they are, there has not been a better time in the last 50 years to buy a house. This is a wonderful sign of progress. Congratulations to Helena native and recent college graduate Ben Hedrick. Ben has cerebral palsy, and has had a tough time his whole life. Things you and I take for granted, Ben has to have help to accomplish. In an effort to help others like himself with all they have to deal with while going away to college, Ben has started the Hedrick Foundation. You can read about it elsewhere in this newsletter. Please get involved in helping this most worthwhile cause if you are able. Recently, our local Guard unit in Pelham was deployed to Afghanistan. Read about a soldier in the unit from our town,
Michael Jeffries and his family. Godspeed to Michael. I want to let his family know that I am here for them should they ever need anything. That goes for all of our families with loved ones who have been deployed. It was with great sadness but also much celebration when Jamie Layton Cagle was laid to rest last month. Her fight and her life were a living testimony to God’s love on this earth. My prayers and condolences are with her husband, Brandon, and their daughters, Erin and Emily. We lost two other dear friends of the city recently: Ruby Ciro was a former Helena Police Department dispatcher back in the 1970s and also a Helena library employee. And Harold Lovelady, one of the oldest living lifelong residents of the city passed away at the age of 87. My prayers and condolences to all the family members and friends. They will be missed. We all know that we have some of the best schools around in Helena. Time and time again, our schools are listed as the reason so many move to our town in the first place. Some recognition of our schools’ achievements came last week when Wayne Williams, Principal of the Intermediate School and Scott Knight, Principal of the Middle School, were recognized along with their faculty and students for achieving some of the best test scores in Shelby County! Ceremonies were held at the schools with Shelby County Schools Superintendent Randy Fuller and former Helena Middle School Principal Jenni Goolsby in attendance to present plaques to the
principals. You can read all about their accomplishments in this issue. My thanks to Wayne, Scott and all the faculty members for the outstanding job they do on behalf of our young people. If you drive around and admire all the hanging baskets and flowers on your way in and out of Helena, a great debt of gratitude is owed to Council Member Barbara Hyche, who gives of her own time and money to keep them looking so beautiful! Many do not realize (and she has asked me not to tell this), but during this recession, when money has been so tight, she has paid for much of the flowers and mulch out of her own pocket. You cannot find dedication like that every day, I can tell you. She is an asset to the city of Helena. Congratulations to Barbara Hyche also for having recently completed her Certified Municipal Official designation along with fellow council member Katherine Ennis, who has decided not to seek reelection but still plans to help with projects
where her expertise is needed. (Katherine was very helpful in getting the coming Buck Creek Trails project approved.) Charles W. “Sonny” Penhale This advanced CMO training is designed to help them serve you better recession and now, as the and represents a significant economy is picking up steam, is no time to let off amount of time spent on their parts in Montgomery the gas! PHS Women’s Athletics Director Kim Kiel It was quite a journey that led Pelham women’s athletics director Kim Kiel from her birthplace in Buffalo, N.Y. to her current home in Helena. Kiel spent her youth inching her way from the chilly northeast to the balmier South, first by moving with her family to Greenville, S.C., then onward to Dothan, Ala. After 13 years as a resident of Helena, Kiel has seen her new home boom. “Pelham High School has over 1,800 students now,” she said. “We’re slam packed, and the split is coming. It’s been really big, especially in Helena. Over these 13 years, the growth has been tremendous.” Kiel’s career began to take shape when she accepted a scholarship offer to Faulkner State. She completed her playing career at the University of North Alabama before serving as a student assistant at UAB for two years and as a full-time assistant for two more. From there, she took over as the women’s basketball coach at Pelham High School, where she was eventually elevated to women’s athletics director. She assumed the reins of the Pelham volleyball program in 2007. But she is still dreaming of new goals. Her proudest moment came when she made a seamless transition into officiating. Maintaining her current role, she was able to round her resume and open new doors. “The part for me to continue being involved in the game after I quit coaching and step into refereeing gives me the whole picture,” she said. “I’ve played it. I’ve coached it. And now I’ve refereed it. That makes me proud. And to still be able to be around and make an impact on kids is special.” Her officiating career has led her to work in three D1 conferences: Southern, Ohio Valley and Atlantic Sun. She has also spent time in the Gulf South, the Peach Belt, NAIA, DIII and the junior college level. Her goal is to be in the Southeastern Conference, so she hones her skills with camps and clinics each year. “I go. I try out,” she said. “I get critiqued by these top referees to better myself.” But she never thought officiating was where her path would lead. “When I was in junior college, I would ref kids’ church league games,” she said. “I had a friend that would say, ‘You should be a ref.’ And I would say, ‘No, I don’t want to do that.’ Ten years later, I called her back and told her I wanted to be a ref. She just laughed.” There’s no off-season for Kim. She spent her summer at Pelham High School making sure her athletes remained eligible and worked with summer school. She went to camps and clinics to advance herself professionally. And before she could manage to take a day off, a new school year is beginning. “I’m an only child,” she said. “And I learned at an early age that if you want something, you’ve got to work for it.” Kim is a goal-oriented lady, and we have no doubt she’ll hit her mark.

Friends and family join the players and coaches beneath the scoreboard to celebrate the hard fought state title!
Helena 6U Softball Team Wins Alabama State Title! After going undefeated and winning their first pre-area championship, the parents and coaches knew that this group of girls was special. How special though, they wouldn’t find out until the state tournament held at Liberty Park that started June 21. The Helena 6U All Stars team was comprised of a group of very enthusiastic and talented little girls who worked as a team to become state champions. “They all have a very competitive nature and always wanted to succeed in every ball game,” said Coach Shawn Allen. The girls went on to win the next pre-area tournament and then the area tournament with only one loss in all three tournaments! Advancing to the state tournament, both the coaches and parents had high hopes of winning it all. Unfortunately though, the girls suffered just the second loss of their All Star run on Friday night, June 22, which meant that in order to win the state championship, they would have to fight their way through
the loser’s bracket and win seven games in near 100 degree heat on Saturday. Having 6-year-olds play with a 100 degree heat index is tough enough, but playing and winning seven games in the same day seemed to be asking the impossible. Everybody was disappointed in this turn of events and apprehensive of the outcome. It just seemed an impossible task in such heat, and the girls were showing signs of exhaustion after playing four weekends in a row. Good thing nobody told the girls, though. On Saturday morning, after winning their first game at 9 a.m., attitudes in the stands began to change. The girls wanted to win, and they were not letting up. They won their next game at 12:45, which meant that if they were going to win the state championship, they were going to have to win five more games, back to back, with only 15 minutes in between games to get a snack and go to the bathroom. With that 100 degree heat index that felt like a blast furnace in the girls’ faces, these Helena
athletes proceeded to process teams and send them home, one by one. Eventually, they found themselves playing an undefeated team from Trussville for the State Title. They would have to beat this team twice to win it all! The first game went into two international tie breakers with the final score: Helena 42 Trussville 36. At this point, parents and coaches realized this was a very special group of ball players, and they meant business! The Helena girls went on to win their 7th and final game that day by beating Trussville 25-14 to bring the State Championship Trophy home to Helena! The team was recognized at the August Helena City Council meeting where they presented a plaque with their picture on it to their sponsor,

Panthers ready to Kick Off 2012 Season in New Region
Pelham head coach Brett Burnett will lead his Panthers into 6A Region 4 this Fall, but just as the Panthers will lose some familiar, difficult foes, they’ll gain an equally challenging new slate. “It will be challenging, just like the last one,” said Burnett. “It’s a new challenge, but it’s a challenge just the same. Now, we’ll be in the same league as Prattville, the defending state champions. And we’re looking forward to it. We’ll have some new folks we haven’t played in the past - a very competitive league.” Oak Mountain, Spain Park and Thompson are the familiar
faces that will take the leap with the Panthers, joining Chelsea, Stanhope Elmore, Wetumpka and the aforementioned 2011 champions. The change will see some rivalries take a hiatus, as the Panthers will not face Hoover or Vestavia Hills in 2012. “They (Oak Mountain, Spain Park, Thompson) helped make up the region that’s been together as long as I’ve been around,” said Burnett. “Now they’ve broken it up and put that region into three separate ones. But that’s not something you can control, you’ve just got to play. We’re excited about it, and we’re excited
about getting started.” Pelham will start with some experience. Six offensive starters return, including one of two rotating quarterbacks, Tanner Adams. Fullbacks Eli Beall and Dalton Sparks will rotate into a generous offense that will allow multiple play makers to contribute. They’ll run behind an experienced line led by Josh Martin, Blane Eddins, Daniel Amandor and Garner Fish. A stout defense will be led by Chisom Morroco, Antonio London and Fletcher Johnson. Michael Boyd returns from injury for his senior season.
10 City of Helena / www.CityOfHelena.org / Email Helena Mayor Sonny Penhale: sonny@sonny-penhale.com
“They expect to go out and win every single game they play,” said Burnett. “This group just kind of expects that. We finished 5-5 last year, and we had a chance to make it to the playoffs. We couldn’t win that last game to put us in though, and it was a bit of a sour note. I think these guys are hungry to make a run at a championship.” The Panthers ease into the new region as this goes to press with a jamboree on August 24 against Tuscaloosa County. Then things begin to count when the Panthers meet Paul Bryant the following week. Good luck guys!

“ I humbly ask for your support, your prayers and your vote Tuesday, August 28, to complete the many projects I am working on for Helena.”
“
”
I am proud of this city that you and I have created together! Everywhere I go, people gush about how blessed we are in Helena, and we are! I thank God everyday for putting me here, and ask for His guidance daily in doing to best job I can for you. The City of Helena is not a building or group of buildings, but it is you, the people, who are the very heart and soul of it. Together, we have accomplished much, but now, as the economy is turning around, is no time to slow down and experiment. I feel as energetic and excited about my job as your mayor as I ever have, and I have many projects in the works that will make Helena an even better place to work,
Helena
play and call home. Some I have told you about but some of them must be kept quiet until the business owners coming decide that it is the time to announce. I would love nothing more than to tell you all that is in the works, but I promise, you will be thrilled with what is coming our way! It is the answer to much, much prayer. We have Helena High School and Athletic Complex/Stadium under way; the Buck Creek Trails project is approved and under design (through a grant); the FEMA community storm shelters are about to get underway, and the Hwy 261 Bypass is being advertised now! (No matter what some say, believe me when I tell you that nobody can get this moving
any faster. I talk with those responsible for it several times a week. “Pestering” them more than I do would be counter-productive. I need your help. Please go to my website at www.sonny-penhale.com. Take a look at letters posted there concerning the Bypass and the Buck Creek Trails projects, and look at all we have done TOGETHER over the past four years. See all that I have planned for the next four, too! Together, we’ve built a great place to live and raise a family. Now is no time to slow down while someone learns the job! Let’s keep our foot on the gas and take advantage of this economy as it picks up steam!

Helena Soldier Deployed With Local Guard Unit As a member of Alabama Army National Guard’s 1/167th Infantry Battalion Company B, called to active duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Cpl. Michael Jeffries was
deployed on June 23. Cpl. Jeffries and his wife, Amy, live in Helena, with their sons: Colin, four and Gavin, nine months. Cpl. Jeffries signed up in 2007, attended basic training in 2008 and joined the 167th. He served in northern Afghanistan in 2010. There, he was part of the PMT
(Police Mentor Training) mission where teams from different District Headquarters worked with the Afghanistan police in administration. “Our teams also went out with them on patrol and got them talking with the villagers—something that hadn’t been done before. We were making connections with the village elders, helping them build wells and establish better relations between villagers and the police.” “The Afghanistani are very hard working people, mostly farmers. The men work from sunrise to sunset; the women cook and care for the children. The climate there can be either very hot or very cold,” Cpl. Jeffries said. Cpl. Jeffries worked as a manager for Hobby Lobby prior to receiving his 30-day notice. During that month, he enjoyed family time in Gatlinburg and a trip to the beach. He visited relatives in Dearborn, Michigan,
where he and Amy are from, having known each other since 6th grade. Amy lived with Michael’s parents during his last deployment and had just begun working at Caldwell Mill Animal Clinic. Her co-workers became an extended family, for which she was grateful. “Now we have our own home, a second son, Gavin, and Colin is more aware of what it means for Daddy to be gone so long,” Amy said. “Michael’s parents are the best support system I could have. We spend a lot of time there; they are wonderful to help with Colin and Gavin—the boys are enjoying their pool this summer.” A Family Readiness Group (FRG) was started just prior to deployment. “The FRG is available to help us know what our options are and where to get assistance with any issues we may have,” Amy said. “Gina Farmer, one of the other wives, and a couple of former members of the 167th help coordinate it all internally; we all have each other’s contact information.” Godspeed Cpl. Jeffries!
Former PHS Student Graduates and Starts Charitable Foundation When it comes to assistance for disabled students, one size does not fit all. Ben Hedrick, 24, has lived with cerebral palsy his entire life and has a very personal perspective on the ways in which the challenges that come with the pursuit of higher education can be met. A 2006 graduate of Pelham High School, Hedrick graduated Cum Laude from the University of Mobile this past December. “I wanted to do a business management track and get a broad base of knowledge so I could run ‘The Hedrick Foundation.’ This idea came to me in 2009 and I told my parents, ‘I just can’t get this out of my head.’” “When I began at the University of Mobile, I became friends with Brian Boyle, then in charge of student services and the person responsible for getting me set up. When he became VP of Institutional Advancement, he and I began working on this idea. The Hedrick Foundation was incorporated in August 2011 and granted non-profit status in April 2012.” “We are now trying to get the word out to let people know what we are doing. We approached this carefully and methodically and conceived a two-prong approach—to help students with financial burdens and to work with the student and their family to lessen logistical barriers.” “Whatever the gap is for the student, say if they need special equipment, we can loan it to them. We help them be able to be involved in school life and have as normal a college experience as possible.” An example Hedrick cites is getting a health care company to pay nursing students to assist disabled students with their basic needs. This gives care-minded students an opportunity to have
a job right on campus. Hedrick had student helpers whom he could contact by text or cell phone to assist him in preparing for classes and activities. “We want to make colleges aware of this system we’ve implemented and how well it works.” Schools have requirements that they must meet for disabled students, but there are gaps in those obligations, and that is where the foundation would help provide resources. Hedrick and the board members are currently developing criteria and the qualifications that will be required. Already in place is the requirement of a 2.25 GPA and eight hours of corporate service for those who receive assistance. Hedrick is never without Kirra, his mellow golden retriever service dog and good companion for 51/2 years. She assists by picking up objects, opening and closing lightweight doors and can fetch help if needed. A friend came daily at college to walk Kirra; another helped groom Kirra weekly. At the University of Mobile, Hedrick was a member of Delta Mu Delta, the business honor society, headed the campus prayer organization for a year and through these, built friendships. In 2010 he interned with United Cerebral Palsy. Hedrick aspires to take his mission nationally first and internationally within ten years. Visit www.hedrickfoundation.org to learn more about the organization.

Snap’s Yoga Classes with Christine Meet Christine Schupp-Avery, who has joined Snap Fitness as a yoga instructor. Christine has been practicing yoga for ten years while studying both sports medicine and therapy. She is certified to teach gymnastics, and it was her gymnastics teacher who introduced Sun Salutation (Suryanamaskara) to her as a stretching, strength building and breath-led movement. “I started to do Suryanamaskara every morning and realized how good it feels and how much my days changed with it,” Christine said. “Yoga poses can be adjusted to every individual’s needs,” she emphasizes. “At whatever level you work, you will be stimulating all your glands, reducing and releasing toxins, strengthening and stretching your muscles and reducing and releasing stress.”
What Do You Have To Lose?
The benefits of yoga go beyond physical exercise—cleaning out your organs and supporting your brain with adequate oxygen. It tones and shapes your body and brings awareness and calmness to your daily life. Christine trained in ChiYoga in Switzerland and completed certification at Birmingham Yoga, where she also teaches. Christine hails from Stuttgart, Germany and prior to coming to Alabama, she worked at the Clinic for Physiotherapy & Geriatric Rehabilitation in Christophsbad Goeppingen, Germany and Rehaklinik Bad Boll Rehabilitation Center/Hospital, specializing in follow-up treatment for joint replacement patients. She and husband Ken met in Stuttgart; Ken is employed by Mercedes-Benz. They married and returned to the states last November. The couple enjoys cooking, gardening and working out together. Another of Christine’s passions is swimming, and says she loves Alabama’s warm weather and
its southern hospitality. “Yoga combines everything important to take care of your health, mind, body and heart,” Christine says. “I invite anyone who has an interest in yoga’s benefits to come try a class. I am looking forward to meeting You!” Yoga classes with Christine meet Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7:00 and Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Snap Fitness Helena.

TOPSoccer Finds True Fans in the Hendersons This brand new to Birmingham program is designed specifically for children with special needs ages 4 through 19. BUSA’s TOPSoccer program became a reality thanks to the dedication and hard work of Taylor and Cindy Smith and is a dream come true for many parents of children with special needs. The TOPSoccer program is much like the Field of Angels baseball league in Calera. Children are grouped by ability and are assigned a “sidekick” to assist them during each practice/game. The TOPSoccer program has opened up an opportunity for children with special needs to gather together and participate in a unified sporting event and to meet friends that they may not have otherwise had the opportunity to meet. Addie Henderson, a resident of Helena, participated in the opening season of BUSA TOPSoccer. Addie is a gregarious and loving five-year-old who was diagnosed at birth with Microcephaly. Addie has worked each day to overcome the odds against her and loves nothing more than to be right
alongside her peers, always working hard to do everything her friends are doing, even if it takes her a little longer. When her mom learned about an opportunity for Addie to participate in a local soccer program, she immediately jumped at the opportunity! Local activities designed for children with special needs are few and far between, especially those that take place on the weekends. She approached the opportunity with an open mind, expecting a
few flaws in the brand new program. She and her husband were absolutely blown away by the dedication of Taylor and Cindy Smith and the volunteers who so willingly offered their time and services for children they had never even met. TOPSoccer of Central Alabama was a success in its first season. The Fall season begins in September, and volunteers are needed in order to make the second season a success. Volunteer sidekicks are needed for each player. The sidekick would be required to commit to coming to each of the four games of the Fall Season and must be willing to work one-on-one with the players. There is truly nothing more beautiful than to see Addie’s eyes brighten when she is running alongside her peers and working so hard to kick a soccer ball just like everyone else! It is a heartwarming experience and one that her mom says “makes her so proud as a parent of a child with special needs.” I hope the TOPSoccer organization can recruit dedicated and loving volunteers to assist in the upcoming Fall Season. For more information on TOPSoccer of Central Alabama, please visit: BirminghamUnited.com/topsoccer. For more information on Addie and her journey, please visit the family’s blog at: babyhenderson.blogspot.com.

Meet the Cutting Crew at
Carl’s
500A Hwy 52W Helena, Alabama
Each barber and stylist brings his or her own unique personality and skills to Carl’s. Read their bios to get to know a little more about them… Laura: Laura graduated from Alabama State Barber College and has been cutting hair for 12 years. She is a “people person” and loves the creativity involved with her profession. What drew her to Carl’s Barber and Style Shop was the family atmosphere. There’s nothing she likes better than seeing new faces in her chair and having them become part of the family through repeat visits. Laura is available to cut and style hair Tuesday through Saturday. Crystal: Crystal has known Carl since she was 12, and states he was instrumental in her choosing this field. She looks forward to building special relationships with each and every one of her clients and has made some wonderful friendships during the 20 years she has been cutting and styling hair. She is available Tuesday through Saturday and she loves chatting with her customers about sports. Dana: Dana attended Hueytown Beauty School and Alabama State Barber College. Dana listens to what her clients want and enjoys trying new ideas to compliment her customer’s facial structure, lifestyle and unique personalities. She is interested in community and world events and says “every person’s life is a story, and I love learning about people.” This applies to old and young alike. She enjoys telling the young kids about the “Monkey Barber.” Tina: Tina attended Alabama State Barber College and has been cutting hair for 16 years. Tina had a creative knack for styling hair since an early age. She would get up at 4:00a.m. before school started to fix her and her step-sister’s hair. She loves being a member of the “Cutting Crew,” because she has a passion for making her clients look and feel their best. Tina’s outside interest include hunting, tanning and repairing “old things.”
Wayne: Wayne was the oldest of 8 children—five boys and three girls. He began cutting hair at the age of 16 when his granddaddy purchased a pair of Sears and Roebuck clippers and tossed them to him, telling him to cut his sibling’s hair! Soon afterwards, his cousins, neighbors and friends came to him for haircuts. He graduated from Alabama Barber College. While serving in the Army’s 20th Special Forces, he cut hair in the barracks. He’s cut hair for 47 years, with 22 of those years being with Carl. When not cutting hair, you can find Wayne target shooting, which he’s just as razor sharp at as he is at his daily profession. Wayne loves being a barber, because he loves people. Wayne is available Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Carl: Barber shops are a part of the history and culture of North America. Carl prides himself in that he continues to keep the tradition and craft of old fashioned barbering alive. Since he began cutting hair in 1965, he has seen a lot of hair styles come and go, from crew cuts, shoulder length hair, mohawks, mullets, buzz cuts, cornrows, rat-tails, spiked hair, the emo style and countless others. Carl works closely with his staff on new techniques to stay current with today’s trends. He loves barbering, because he loves people. He has established many lasting friendships, watched children of his regular customers grow up as well as watching many of his regulars turn gray…just like him! His customers range from one-year-olds to those in their 90s. Carl laughs as he estimates he has swept up around a thousand pounds of hair in the 47 years he’s been cutting hair! Carl has created a relaxing, fun loving environment and loves to joke with his employees and customers. He realizes that your decision to visit him is a choice and one that he deeply appreciates. To show his appreciation, he and his staff strive to provide you with the very best in customer service, with close attention paid to detail. His philosophy is to treat people the way he would want to be treated. When not at the shop, you can find Carl working on cars or traveling, and he says he loves the beach. Stop in and see Carl or one of his associates soon!

All 3 of our children grew up going to Helena Schools, and my wife substitute teaches as well. I would like to bring a variety of businesses to our city, so that our citizens aren’t having to drive outside of Helena to shop. The Library received the sad news of the passing of Ruby Ciro on August 1, 2012. Mrs. Ciro was at one time the head librarian for Helena, a longtime library Board member, and a generous supporter of The Jane B. Holmes Public Library. A native of Indiana, Mrs. Ciro moved to the Helena area in the early 1980’s. She served many roles in the City of Helena, including time in the Police Department as Dispatcher. She was also a very active member of the First Baptist Church of Helena, teaching Sunday School and serving on many committees. Mrs. Ciro was the loving mother of six children, 19 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. The library would like to thank Mrs. Ciro for her thoughtfulness and dedication to the City of Helena, and her family is in our thoughts and prayers. The library received much appreciated assistance this summer from a member of the

The library would like to thank Airman First Class jessee for his Service to our Country, and for taking the time to volunteer at the library.
A Brief History of Our Library Library Services for the city of Helena were first made available in the early 1960’s in a small room in the original Town Hall, with a small amount of shelf space. In the early years the library was staffed by part-time librarians and volunteers. In 1970, the responsibility of the library was given to a newly-hired city clerk, in addition to many other duties. In 1981, the library moved into the old Post Office building on 2nd Street. Compared to the previous space, this location seemed more than adequate. As time passed however, the physical condition of the building suffered due to water damage and other related problems.

Yard Spotlight 599 Fieldstone Drive Dana & Scott Deason
Scott Deason has no formal training but has always been interested in landscaping; he is known for drawing out plans and helping friends with their yards. When the Deasons moved to Fieldstone Drive, Scott took a photograph of their lot and then sketched in his ideas with sharpie markers. “If you hold that photo up side by side with the yard, it is amazing to see how they match and how good his vision was,” says Dana. “We both enjoy working on the yard and could easily spend five or six hours out there every day.” “We even met over our mutual
devotion to our yards,” Dana says, “When we both lived in Braelinn Village, we got to know each other while admiring each other’s landscaping.” Dana, meanwhile, also noticed a trailer with a guitar and the logo The Girls pictured on the side. As a singer herself, she was curious to know about the band. As it happened, when she finally asked, The Girls had just lost their lead female singer, so Dana ended up joining the band in which Scott played drums. The name was changed to Memphis Voodoo, and they played locally at Gabriel’s, Pub 261 and Superior Grill. When an opportunity arose to purchase the hair salon where Dana worked, Scott trained to be a stylist, and they worked together daily at Studio 21 for the next eight years. They have now opened a second location in downtown Birmingham in the Alabama Power building, and Scott is based there. Before moving to Fieldstone
Park in 2004, the couple lived briefly in Pelham and there acquired a large Japanese maple tree. They stipulated that the tree would not be sold with the house and brought it as the main anchor plant for their new home.
They are very territorial—sometimes we sit in the backyard and watch them fight over our two feeders.” “Hummingbirds tend to return to the same places each year. Alan Farmer Warns Us About Summer Bugs This summer has been one of the longest that I can remember and especially hot.
Summer started early, about a month ahead of schedule, weatherwise, and as a result, local insects have been thriving this year! We have seen an increase in several types of insects including spiders, cockroaches, ticks, and fleas. Because of the
amount of rain we had at the end of July, we expect ants of all kinds to be especially bad in August and September. Indoor ants such an Argentine and outdoor ants like the Red Imported Fire Ant will cause trouble in the next few months as well. Always remember that insects are in or near your home looking for three things: food, water, and shelter from the elements. Obviously your home provides the shelter, but did you know that clogged gutters and downspouts, weeds, yard debris, and even firewood can
also provide a safe harborage for all kinds of unwanted pests? When we arrive at the home or business of a new customer, we always start with an inspection to look for “conducive conditions that may be aiding in the development of pest infestations. We look for standing water (for signs of mosquitoes), yard debris (for signs of American Cockroaches), and moist ground near the foundation (for signs of termites). Eliminating these conditions is the first and most important step in any successful pest prevention program. Alan Farmer (pictured at left) is a lifelong resident of Helena and is the owner along with his wife, J.J., of FarmerGuard Pest Control, a Helena-based company. To contact Alan, call 358-3200 or email him at alan@ farmerguard.com. Visit www.farmerguard.com to learn more about FarmerGuard and how they can help rid you of any pests that may be lurking around your home or business.

Senator Cam Ward Helps Dedicate New Historic Marker for Helena’s Harmony Graveyard Cam Ward was on hand to dedicate the new historic marker for Harmony Graveyard in a ceremony on August 4. The marker was made possible by contributions from interested Helena residents, many of whom have family members who are buried there. The marker pays tribute to the graves of Helena’s “earliest physicians, ministers, educators and public officials, including C.I. Hinds, the city’s first mayor.” The oldest grave in Harmony Graveyard is that of Col. Jones Griffin. Griffin, (d. 1836) a former soldier and early white settler, lived in the Coalmont Road area after chasing the Creek Indians with Andrew Jackson.
He married Mary “Polly” Lee, sister of Needham Lee, Sr. The marker also mentions “among the most poignant burials are Ora Hanbury and her children Guy and Ione, and Sara J. Glendale, who were killed in the Cahaba River train wreck of December 27, 1896.” In 2010, Ken Penhale formed the group, Friends of Harmony Graveyard, with Billy Dean Harris, Linda Duke, Ronnie Campbell and Kenneth Mullins to work toward researching and funding the historic marker. “I want to thank everyone for coming out today and for lending their support to this project. I could not have done it without you,” Penhale said.

ELECT CRIS NELSON HELENA CITY COUNCIL PLACE 3
FIRST APPOINTED TO THE HELENA CITY Council, Place 3, in 2008, Cris has taken an active leadership role on the council and in the community. In August of the same year, she officially ran for reelection of her position on the Council and was un-opposed. Many people recognize Cris as the familiar face at the Friday night “Movies In The Park,” flipping burgers and serving drinks, or as one of the many committee members each May who runs around making sure things run smoothly during the Buck Creek Festival. Each Saturday morning during the summer, she works the Helena Market Days Farmers Market. Cris says these projects give her an opportunity to work with a great group of people and to meet many new faces each year. “To have a parent or child come up to you and tell you thank you for what you do is so gratifying and makes all the sweat and soreness worthwhile.” Through her civic volunteering, she has been part of a team that has been successful in raising funds for charities. The Buck Creek Festival has exceeded $160,000 in charitable contributions, Movies in the Park has contributed almost $14,000 in new playground equipment for the Amphitheater Park, and the Katrina
fund raiser “Bands of Hope” raised over $10,000 for Hurricane Katrina victims. “I have taken my responsibilities as your city representative very seriously and worked for the past 4.5 years to ensure your voice has been heard with our city leaders. The past 4 years have been a difficult time for our community with the economy affecting every citizen in some form or fashion and directly hitting City Hall. I am very proud of the employees of the City of Helena who have stepped up to the plate and taken on more responsibilities with department heads having to work with less funds. It has not been an easy task. The economy is slowly turning around, and we are seeing some activity in the city that shows promise. I am hopeful that if I am allowed to continue to represent you, I will be instrumental in bringing better days to the residents of the city we all love, Helena.

PROVEN, EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP
2012 Relay For Life North Shelby County Relay for Life A Huge Success! So far this year, North Shelby Relay for Life has raised over $83,841 in the fight against cancer, an all time high. (Fund raising does not end for this year until August 31st.) The top fund raising team was the Mighty Mites. Captain Elizabeth Turner, a student at Helena Intermediate School, and her team raised $11,964! There were 424 registered participants and 47 registered teams in this year’s event, two more all time highs! This year’s event had at least double the number of registered participants as last year’s, with a crowd estimated at about 1,000 when you include bands, speakers, PHS cheerleaders and Pantherettes, etc., according to Bob Van Loan, one of the event organizers. There were eleven sponsors, the most ever. (Riverchase Kia was the title sponsor and Bama Fever was the Survivorship Sponsor.) Key committee members included: Amy Turner (Team Development), Amy Bolt (Luminaria), Jeff Bolt (Webmaster), Maurice Mercer (Community Outreach), Cindy Tolliver (Entertainment & Activities), Stacey McIntyre (Sponsorship), Cherri Hudson (Accounting & Registration), Calvin Stokesbary (Logistics) and Kylee Patrick (ACS Staff Partner). A highlight of the night was the flash mob that took place when Ashley Partridge sang “Dynamite.” Bob said he still gets chills when he remembers how virtually everyone in the
stadium jumped in to dance, signifying how united everybody was in the fight against cancer. Thanks to everyone who participated in any way in this effort to remember those who have succumbed in their fight, encourage those currently in the fight, celebrate those who have won the fight and perhaps most importantly, to raise money in the ongoing war against cancer. Remember, this year’s drive goes through the end of August, so it’s not too late to give towards the effort. For more information on how you can give or become involved, Pelham residents may contact Maurice Mercer at mercermaurice@gmail.com.

Helena Student Auditions For Agents Gavin Boley is 11-years-old and starts Helena Middle School this year. The budding young actor attended an “open call” event recently for actors/models at the Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover. According to his mom, this was a really quick, “you have the look or you don’t” type affair. Seems Gavin did, and they invited him to
come to an actual ProScout audition event in Atlanta that featured over 900 auditioners who performed in front of 30 agents. A two-day event, the first day was a workshop learning what the agents were looking for. “This was also a first cut, when the actors got to try out their acting monologues and the ones in charge decided if the actors got to perform in front of the agents the next day,” said Andrea Boley, Gavin’s mom. “Gavin did a scene from The Goonies and was picked to perform for the agents. After it was over, we waited to see if there was an interested agent. Eleven of them expressed an interest in him! He was sent a mock scene to perform for one agent, and another
Beat The Heat And Fight Childhood Cancer
With Toomer’s Lemonade!
In an effort to join the battle against childhood cancer, family, friends and 8-yearold Ella Robinett hosted an Alex’s Lemonade Stand as part of her birthday celebration on Saturday, August 18, at the Silver Lakes Subdivision playground on Silver Lakes Drive. In planning for her 8th birthday celebration, Helena resident Ella Robinett decided she would like to host a lemonade stand honoring all kids who are currently battling cancer as well as her Grandpa, Jack King, who is undergoing treatment for lung cancer. She asked for donations to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation in lieu of birthday gifts. The day of the event, the lemonade stand sold glasses of ice-cold Toomer’s Lemonade. Ella, a rising 3rd Grader at Advent Episcopal School in Birmingham, says her favorite subject in school is science. Asking her what she wanted to do when she grows up, Ella said she wants to “blow things up.” (Seems the Fourth of July is her favorite holiday and sounds like a military career could be in her future. :-)
against this dreaded disease which affects us all in one way or another. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (19962004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to open a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fund raising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $55 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 250 research projects nationally. It’s a problem juggling your life trying to see
two agents in New York and one in Los Angeles, but we’ll get there soon.” “This is what Gavin really wants to do—and does so naturally—so we’ll do whatever it takes,” Finished Andrea. Here’s hoping you make it Gavin. We’ll ask you to come back and see us every now and then though, once you make it big!

The Big Ten and the Southeastern Conference are home to some of sports’ most passionate fans, and his time in Mobile allowed him to see some of the NFL’s most passionate when the nation most needed sports. “When I was in Mobile, covering the Patriots-Rams Super Bowl in New Orleans the year of 9/11 was really enjoyable,” he says. Since his arrival, he has watched the state bring home three consecutive BCS National Championships. He’s flown with the Blue Angels, driven NASCAR and Indy cars, and he’s golfed with some of the PGA and LPGA’s finest. He’s even been shark fishing on the Gulf Coast. Helena Middle School Panthers Ready for Kick Off! www.hmsfootball.com
The 2012 Helena Middle School Panthers football team is 80 strong this season with 50 seventh and 30 eighth graders attending summer camp. Head Coach and Athletic Director Ryan Brewer said, “This eighth grade team did a great job last year as seventh graders— losing only one game. I expect them to do really well; I expect a lot out of this team.” “We’ve got two eighth grade quarterbacks this year—Riley Davis and Cade Pugh,” he continued. “And in seventh grade, we’re looking at Lawson Peoples and Landon Green.” “At running back (eighth grade) we have Devon Walker, Sam Praytor, Nash Adams, Brett Walton, Norri Tinker, and Austin Davis—all those guys will be getting some carries at running back.” “We’ve got some threats outside in John Brown, Jake Busby and Kade Jones. We have
a returning center from last year, Brooks Brophy. He did an outstanding job last year.” Up front, the “big uglies” are Julian Rodriguez and Nick Irwin, along with seventh graders Taylor Knight and Matthew Raley, Jack Buchannan, Ethan Spencer and Logan Cantrell. There are a couple of new eight graders that Coach Brewer is trying to work into the rotation. One is Zachary Calhoun who has “exhibited a lot of athleticism so far in camp.” “Defensively, we have a brandspanking new coaching staff, and we’re very excited about them,” Ryan said. David Green, the new HMS defensive coordinator, comes from Homewood High School and Mount Ida College in Boston, MA. HMS welcomes back Coach Bobby Cummings for his fifth year and new coaches James Brown (defensive line); Thomas Hammock (defensive backs);
Chris Self (receivers) and Coaches Walter Cunningham and Teco Stephens. Coach Green told us, “We’ve had a great summer workout so far. The heat is starting to get to a few of the guys, but one of the things we’ve had a lot of success with is improving our aggressiveness on defense. We get downhill more.” “I see the boys starting to have a lot more fun, and if there is one other thing we could ask for, it would be for it to cool off just a little more. Other than that, we’re going to get down to it and have a great year!” “The seventh graders are still learning how we work offensively and defensively. It’s a slow process, but they are getting it,” Ryan said. “We have eight coaches this year, that’s a first. We’ve got a good thing going, and I’m proud to be part of it.” The team had a pre-season game set for August 23 against Homewood before kicking off
the regular season against Oxford in an away game August 30. The first home game is set for Thursday, September 6 against Columbiana, 5:30 p.m. All home games are played at Pelham High School on Thursdays. Fly By Radio Rockers Call Helena Home—Foster Animals
Matt and Pacey Harris are living their dream. The husband and wife couple are founders of the popular band, Fly By Radio. The band plays all over the Southeast and is in tremendous demand at Southeastern Conference College campuses. They play classic Rock N Roll tunes. They love for crowds to sing along and dance with them! For the past year, Matt and Pacey Harris have given their heart and soul as volunteers to Two by Two Rescue. They give their time, money and talent. They have fostered over 30 dogs,
created videos and documentaries, photographed dogs for the website, cleaned kennels, transported dozens of dogs the vet clinic, and potty-trained dozens of puppies. The couple is show-stopping gorgeous, but equally as humble and even a little mysterious about their profession. For a long time, most of the volunteers had no idea that they were the lead singer and guitarist for a band. They never brag about their fame and popularity, but humbly mention that they “work” most weekends. They never

mention what they do. After the mystery was disclosed, I decided to sit down with them to ask all the questions the rest of us are so curious to know. I must admit, I liked them before the interview, but afterwards, I knew that I loved and admired them. Q & A with Two by Two’s Sonya Smith S: How did you name your band? M & P: Under pressure we both just came up with words that we like and we put the words together. We wish we had some great story to say but that is the simple truth. S: How long have you two been playing together? Pacey: Can I lie? I don’t want people to know how old I am. Sonya: For crying out loud, you look 21 years old! P: Our current line-up has been together for seven years. S: Where do you play? M & P: Mainly college towns in the Southeast. S: How did you meet? M & P: We played together in another band and then decided to start our own. S: How long have you been married? M & P: We have been together nine years, married for three and a half. S: What is the most fun about your job? Matt: I love the energy of being on stage and the energy you feel from a large crowd. P: We get to do what we love and travel. S: How far in advanced are you booked? M & P: Our calendar is full for the next 8 months and we are already booking in 2013. S: Do you have a favorite venue to play? M & P: We both love playing close to home at the Ironhorse. We always have a great crowd. We also love playing at Alabama and Auburn after a ballgame. It is a lot of fun and especially if they won, the crowd of about 1,500 is so intense screaming War Eagle and Roll Tide! S: How long have you lived in Helena? M & P: Three and a half years S: How many fans to do you have on Facebook? M & P: 15,000 fans! We have even gotten a few of our foster dogs adopted through our postings on Facebook. A couple of our fans have adopted. One puppy now lives in a great home in Pensacola. Search FLY BY RADIO to follow us! S: Do you have a favorite song to play? M & P: Dream On by Aerosmith. It is funny because since Guitar Hero is so popular, it has helped our younger crowds fall in love with old

rock songs. S: What prompted you to become a Two by Two Rescue volunteer? P: I always wanted to help a rescue. Ever since I was a little girl, I would save strays. When we moved to Helena, I found Two by Two Rescue on the internet and wanted to invest my heart into a no-kill organization. We have free time and I wanted to spend it doing something worthy. Matt: I am just Pacey’s assistant. (laughs) I am so proud of my wife and what she has done. Volunteering has really helped me learn a lot and I think it has made me a better person. I am glad Pacey pursued and initiated our involvement. Also, from our experience with helping create a documentary for Two by Two, I have decided that cinematography might be in our future when we are too old for playing in a band. S: Huh? Have you seen Mick Jagger? S: Do you have a favorite foster dog? P: We love Griswald so much we kept him! Matt: I loved Echo. He was the mute Bassett Hound that had his vocal cords cut. He dug in the trash but I could not help but feel sorry for him. S: Is it hard when your foster dog leaves for a home? M & P: Yes! It is exciting but bittersweet. The first couple of days it’s sad, but after two weeks we are really happy that they got a permanent home. S: What have you learned from fostering rescued animals? P: Such enlightenment! I have learned so much about dogs AND people! It is very eye opening. God gave us dominion over His creatures. Satan will take dominion and make it domination. We have to pray every day to fix what humans destroy; to honor what God gave us. I have also learned so much about the importance of spaying and neutering after seeing so many unwanted dogs. S: What is the most rewarding part of rescue work? P: I get to play with dogs all the time! I like every bit of it and love knowing that they are going to a great home. For Booking: Contact Matt at www.flybyradio.com

Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon? With the help of William Davis, certified pilot, instructor and owner of Southern Balloon Journeys, Council Person Barbara Hyche recently helped make an item on Gary Hyche’s bucket list come true. Barbara made the arrangements and then went along for the ride that floated over our beautiful city’s landscape and neighborhoods. When Barbara researched balloon rides online, she was “drawn to “Southern Balloon
Journeys” by their attractive website, www.flysbj.com.” Little did she know that the pilot and business owner was a fellow Helena resident and actually her neighbor! At the journey’s end, William presented Gary and Barbara with an Ado balloon lapel pin, and afterwards, the crew toasted their successful excursion as well as their future. “It was great fun,” Barbara said. “It gives you a whole new perspective of the landscape around Helena.” Southern Balloon Journeys is available for Hot Air Rides and Tether Rides for various occasions and events.

HMS Cheerleaders Tuning Up! The HMS Cheerleading Squad has been going non-stop since tryouts in April and are finalizing their routines for the ’12 opener. Coach Michelle Saindon said, “Our squad has historically placed first in every competition I’ve ever taken them to, and we expect the same out of this group of young ladies.” “It’s remarkable that they perform year-round cheering for every school sport, and when football, basketball and volleyball seasons are over, they start preparing for their competition season and then comes tryouts for the next year.”
“To keep their place on the squad, they must keep their grades above average. They are known for their good character, and they are extremely talented.” “Some of our girls cheer competitively out of school, and several of them play on the girl’s softball team,” she said. The best part of the cheerleading experience, says Hannah Montalbano, has been making new friends, and the most difficult movement she has learned is the round-off back handsprings tuck. (Whew!) “Our coaches are great and teach us everything we need to

and be the right size for the child. These three things, combined with proper training, will ensure a fun and safe riding experience.”
BIKE SAFETY Bike riding is a great way to get exercise and fresh air and share time as a family. But before you and the kids rush out and start pedaling, there’s an important factor that you need to consider — safety. “There are three things that every parent needs to be aware of before their child hops on a bike,” said Debbie Coshatt, RN, Patient Safety Educator at Children’s of Alabama. “The child must wear a helmet, the bike must be is well maintained
Helmet Basics Bicycle helmet use should not be optional for anyone in your family, no matter where you are or how short the ride. In many states it’s the law. Here’s why: Many bike accidents involve a head injury, so a crash could mean permanent brain damage or death for someone who doesn’t wear one while riding. In fact, each year in the United States, about 300,000 kids are seriously injured in bicyclerelated accidents, and most of those injuries could have been avoided if a helmet was worn. To protect against brain injury, make sure your kids wear a correctly fitting helmet on every ride. Bike Maintenance Check your child’s bike at least once each season to keep it safe and well-maintained.

Be sure to check: tires inflate to the pressure that’s recommended on the sidewall of the tire chain oil it regularly and remove dirt handlebars adjust for height as your child grows and tighten all bolts brakes check for frayed cables and replace worn-out brake pads seat keep the seat level and adjust for height as needed Making Safety a Family Affair One of the best ways to help
kids learn safe bike riding is to set a good example by following the rules of the road yourself. Most important, always wear your helmet. Go for bike rides with your kids so you can show them what safe riding looks like. It’s also a great way to stay active as a family and get valuable together time that you’ll all enjoy! Southeastern Butcher Supply
A Hallmark of Helena for Nearly Four Decades Southeastern Butcher Supply has been a quiet presence in Old Town for 39 years. Driving by, it’s possible the only activity you have noticed is Trixie, who has been holding down her position as office dog for seven years, when she takes her outing. Behind the rows of machinery visible from the road are three generations of a close knit family conducting business as usual—a business that had its beginnings when patriarch Elliott Ward began working for a Memphis butcher supply company in 1957. Moving to Hendersonville, Tennessee in 1966, Ward also began selling food equipment, most notably the hamburger patty machine that was growing in demand due to the expansion of the McDonalds and Burger King franchise empires. Elliott and Jean Ward arrived in Alabama in 1973 co-opening a business with Max Hawkins in Tarrant. Not wanting to work from his Alabaster home, he rented out the basement of Mullins Grocery at 4013 Helena Road. He traveled the entire state doing sales and repairs. The Hollymatic patty machine was in great demand as Wendy’s was just opening their franchises and fresh patties were the hot item. After Kenneth Mullins retired in 1982, Ward bought the building and the house next door. At that time, about the only other retail business in Helena was Helena Tire Center.
Ward first continued to run Mullins Grocery as a convenience store, but closed it eventually, after which the upstairs of the building housed a movie rental store, then a church, and later a shoe store. “Where once every large city would have a Butcher Machinery Shop, dealerships have gradually closed down as their owners died off,” Elliott Ward explains. “The same would have happened if Mike hadn’t learned the business. With a degree in electronics, he has been able to take on the operations and have an understanding of the computerization of all the machinery.” Ward explains that although the meat Elliott Ward shows a picture of the Hollymatic Network processing and packing industry has shifted their own sausage. His tombstone honors his service in Desert Storm. Because Southeastern Butcher Supply has been able to diversify with the times, they are still in business. Though Elliott retired five years ago he has remained too involved with the business to take up any hobbies, but he and Jean enjoy their five grandchildren and attend school band concerts when their grandsons perform. Their granddaughter, Rachel Ward, was killed in an automobile accident in 2011. Grandson Thomas Ward helped out at the family business as a teenager and graduated from Thompson High School in May. He is in the Uuniversity of Alabama Summer program and received a scholarship to play trombone at there. Jeffrey Ward just completed 9th grade, where he was a representative for People to People and is a member of Boy Scout Troop 2. Thanks to Elliott Ward for taking the time to share of bit of Helena’s living history with us, and best of luck in all you do! Mike with Trixie the guard dog and Elliott Ward.

On August 28th, Helena residents will get a chance to change their future by voting in our municipal elections. While that may appear to be a lofty statement at first, it’s actually nothing short of the absolute truth. Your greatest opportunity to make a difference or even make a change is to vote. Period. Like most of you, I enjoy what Helena has to offer; a city that offers a safe place to live and raise our children, schools that are routinely scored at the top of just about any list and a lingering “old south charm” that seems to have disappeared from just about everywhere else. Being judged one of the top places to live in the United States just a few years ago, Helena remains a highly desirable place to live; not only for Birmingham area residents but for those moving here from out of state as well. However, to rephrase the famous line from the Apollo 13 mission, “Helena, we have a problem”. The problem is simple to understand; so much of what we enjoy about this wonderful city of ours depends upon the ability of our city to pay for it. One of our largest sources of revenue is property taxes, which I’m sure most of you are familiar with. While it’s a great source of revenue for any city, think of it as a fixed income. Sure, we can build more homes – but not many more. Thankfully, there’s another source of income, one that technically has no ceiling. Businesses. The revenue from local Helena businesses is limited only by THEIR revenue from you, Helena residents (and other from out of our city). Encouraging business in Helena isn’t only about shopping locally; it’s also about encouraging growth by making Helena attractive to new and relocating business ventures. It takes strong city leaders that are committed to a vision and a purpose, committed to making our city grow, stay viable and ultimately continue to provide the life which we so love. This year we’re fortunate to have so many great candidates running for local office. Yes, that’s right, they’re all great. Why? Because they made a choice to become involved, to make a change, to make a difference, no matter if they’re an incumbent or a new candidate. They’ve stepped forward publicly and have gone to great lengths to make sure you, the voter, know where they stand on various issues. Congratulations to all of them for making that effort. On August 28th, Helena residents will get a chance to become involved, to make a change, to make a difference – by voting. Vote for the candidate(s) that embody that vision and purpose that will continue to drive Helena into the future and help grow this city we all love so much. The following Pelham High School students were recognized for their hard work, not only in the classroom, but on the courts and fields as well. They were selected to the 2012 Birmingham News All–Metro Academic Team, but were inadvertently omitted from the newspaper’s special section. We are privileged to honor them here in the Pelham City News. Congratulations to all of these junior and senior student athletes who maintained at least a 3.7 GPA while participating in a sport during the 2011-12 school year.

Boy Scout Cookoff August 18, 2012
Judges agreed that both Boy Scout Troop 2 and Troop 220 did an excellent job of preparing and cooking the mystery ingredient, fresh red snapper. With only six points difference between the total scores of the two teams, Troop 2 prevailed as the winner. The scouts used okra, squash, tomatoes and herbs from market vendors in their menus. Both troops used fresh peaches in their peach cobbler dessert, but it was possibly the magic ingredient of chocolate, added by Troop 2, that put them over the top. “The overwhelming generosity shown by Whole Foods toward the boy scout troops for our cook offs has been most appreciated,” said Mary Perko. “We couldn’t have done this without their help.”
