FROM THE MAYOR

Greetings! I hope this edition of the Helena City News finds you well for 2019. 2018 was a great year for Helena, as we continued to enjoy fun, family-friendly events such as Jazz in the Park, the Buck Creek Festival, the Christmas Tree Lighting and even a rainy Christmas Parade that proved to be fun and enjoyable for all that braved the weather to attend. We look forward to many more exciting community events again this year. Congratulations to all our youth sports teams that excelled this year, in particular our youth football league and cheerleaders, both of which won championships and are featured on the cover of this edition of the Helena City News. Great job by all—you represented us well! On another note, we are very proud that the new soccer field at the Youth Sports Complex is open and ready for play this

season. The field looks great, and we are proud to have it ready for our youth teams to enjoy. I would also like to say once again how very proud I am of all the schools located in Helena. Good schools help build a great community. The teachers, administrators and staff are the best. We are very proud to partner with our schools to help with needed improvements and funding to meet needs that the Shelby County Board of Education may not be positioned to provide. Our new Superintendent, Dr. Lewis Brooks, and members of the school board are a pleasure to work with as we continue to cooperate on many initiatives and projects designed to improve our schools. It is always great to welcome new businesses to the city. We were fortunate to see several small, locally owned businesses open this past year which is absolutely wonderful, and two larger projects—O’Reilly Auto Parts and On Guard Storage— opened in Helena. These last two projects represent multi-million dollar investments and offer new employment opportunities here as well. I appreciate the commit-

ment and the investment business owners make in our community, and I hope everyone will support their efforts. Welcome to all, and thank you for choosing to locate here in Helena! Just an update now on road improvements, I have met regularly with engineers and officials from ALDOT for the past year regarding the initial turn lane and intersection improvements on Hwy 261 at Helena Elementary School, and I will continue meeting with ALDOT about the widening and lane expansion project on State Road 261, which will go all the way to I-65. This is a multi-jurisdiction cooperative effort that I am very hopeful we will see final funding agreements put in place for this year. I will continue to pursue, push and cooperate with ALDOT on all these projects. The process is slow and frustrating at times, but we must keep moving forward on it, and I will not rest until we see results. Finally, I would like to personally thank our dedicated staff in the Public Works, Utilities and the Police and Fire Departments for working diligently to make sure they do everything possible to provide professional services for our citizens. These dedicated public servants always go the

extra mile to make sure we are safe, and that they are there for us when needed. Their professionalism and dedication is one reason we are always recognized as one of the Safest Cities in Alabama year after year. I would also like to welcome the newest member to the Helena City Council, Brian Puckett. Brian is a longtime resident and has been very active in the community with the Beautification Board and other volunteer organizations. Brian was appointed to fill the recent vacancy on the council that was created by the resignation of Mike Jones. I look forward to working with Brian in his new role here. Please remember to visit ALL our local businesses and eateries, as your purchases directly impact the well being of the city with your tax dollars staying here to support our schools, public safety and public improvement projects that benefit everyone. Thank you for your continued support as we strive to make Helena the very best that it can be! Best Wishes,

Meet Crystal Hann, owner of Old Town Barber Shop Crystal Hann, owner of Old Town Barbershop, is Alabama was born and raised in Alabama. She went to Hueytown High School and started barber college in 1991. After graduating, Crystal says she had a friend who owned his own barber shop in Midfield—Carl Suggs, who owns Carl Suggs Barber & Style Shop (and who has since moved to Morgan Road). Crystal said her first job working in a salon though, was in Vestavia at Ambience Salon. “I was a shampoo tech there for Lisa Frank. I had just started barber college. Once I had enough hours to work in a shop cutting hair, I went to work for my friend, Carl Suggs, at his shop in Midfield. After I graduated barber college, I worked at Gaye Austin’s Barber Shop in Moody for awhile, and then in 1996, I started working for Carl full time when he moved his shop from Midfield to Morgan Road. In fact, I worked with Carl for 24 years before deciding to venture out on my own and open Old Town Barber Shop in May of last year.” “As a young barber at the age of 20, my goal was always to have my own shop and follow in the footsteps of Carl, who has always

operated a very successful business,” she said. “Old Town Helena is just the perfect place,” Crystal continued. “I was looking for a small town where I could become like the character Floyd, happy in his barber shop in the fictional town of Mayberry, lol. From my very first day, I have been overwhelmed with the amount of business here. Leaving such an iconic place like Carl’s shop was hard—I was scared and nervous at first to venture out on my own—but my customers followed me here, and with them plus all the new customers we have gained since opening, I am very happy that I made this change in my life!” “Since opening here, I have had lots of calls wanting to know if I cut children’s hair. The answer is YES, children are the future of my business! I keep very flexible hours and am currently open TuesdayFriday, 8:30am til 5:30pm, Saturdays from 8am til 1pm, and I am closed Sundays and Mondays,” she said. Crystal has been a resident of Helena for four years. She believes Helena is a great place to start a business. “All the people here, from fellow business owners to the folks who walk into my shop have

all been so very welcoming. I love the feeling here in Old Town. I just want everyone who walks into Old Town Barber Shop—whether they are getting a haircut or just stopping by—to feel welcome and

a part of the family,” she finished. In addition to Crystal, Laura Lusk also has a chair in Old Town Barber Shop where she offers her own customers the same “Old Town” service folks here enjoy.

We’d like you to meet Helena High School Drama Coach

Jeb Casey

Jeb Casey was one of the school’s original teachers when Helena High School opened with Jay Peoples as principal and current principal, April Brand, his assistant. Prior to becoming a Husky, Casey was an English teacher and baseball coach and started the theater department at Tarrant High School. “It was a challenge there in a declining economic area to have the resources necessary—we staged theatre performances in the middle school gym—but I look back on my time there as successful and fun. It was due to our success there that I was hired here,” he said. A Homewood native, after high school, Casey attended Furman University in Greenville, S.C. Casey said he originally wanted to attend the Digipen Institute of Technology (started by Nintendo co-founder Claude Comair) in the Northwest to become a computer programmer, but says his mom had different ideas concerning just 14 Winter 2019 / www.CityOfHelena.org

how far from home he’d be going for school. “My family has ties to Vanderbilt, but I didn’t want to go there. I visited Wake Forest, but during a campus visit to Furman, it became my new #1 school. It just felt like somewhere that I could consider home,” Casey said. On the day I visited the Furman campus, it was bright and sunny, and I just knew that even when the weather was dark and gloomy outside, I could make a home there. Married to Lydia, the couple has a 5-year-old named Mallie and a 7-year-old named Isaac. “My wife loves hiking, and my kids enjoy playing outside in any of this area’s many parks. We look for ways to expand the kids’ minds without spending money,” said Casey. Lydia is an ordained Presbyterian minister and also an RN at UAB. “She is currently working on her next level in nursing,” said Casey.

“The City of Helena is crazy about its sports teams, but I have been surprised at the level of support we have received from parents and the city for the arts. I do not think this city has a glass ceiling— the people here value lots of things besides sports. The HHS drama department’s fall play, “The Learned Ladies,” is an example of the way Casey tries to expand the types of plays his students are exposed to during their high school careers. “I try to find shows that are going to be challenging and different for our actors,” said Casey. “We do a musical every other year, and we try to expose our kids to various styles of theater in our two yearly performances.” This fall, they chose “The Learned Ladies” by French playwright, Moliere. The play is adapted from Les Femmes Savantes and is a comedy. It’s actually a satire on academic pretension and female education. It was one of Moliere’s most popular comedies.

It premiered at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal In 1672. The Learned Ladies mocks the idea that one should show off their intelligence to be seen as “better” by others. Last year, the drama team at HHS selected “Annie” and “The Curious Savage,” which deals with mental illness. This spring, the company has selected “Peter and the Starcatchers,” by Dave Barry and Richard Pearson, published in 2004 by Hyperion Books, a subsidiary of Disney, which provides the backstory for Peter Pan. “This year we have 21 actors and understudies,” said Casey, “and the understudies must earn their time in the spotlight by proving themselves capable of handling their roles responsibly before being given a role in one of our plays.” Stay tuned for more information on the school’s spring dramatic performance, and make plans to attend. The plays are family-friendly and good fun!

Reese Unnoppet, a 4th grade student at Prince of Peace Catholic School in Hoover, has been invited to join the Duke University Talent Identification Program’s prestigious 4th–6th Grade Talent Search. Each year, a select group of academically talented students in the United States are identified as academically gifted based on their exceptional grade-level standardized test scores at or above the 95th percentile qualify. Those students are invited to participate in the 4th–6th Grade Talent

Search and to take the optional PSAT 8/9, which is designed for eighth and ninth graders. Taking an above-grade-level test is an experience that allows these gifted fourth, fifth, and sixth graders to more accurately gauge their academic abilities and potential, as they need more advanced examinations than they find in their grade level. Participants in the 4th–6th Grade Talent Search also receive a variety of support services and gain access to research and other information about using their academic abilities more effectively. Reese Unnoppet is the daughter of Dr. Nop & Sonya Unnoppet of Helena.

Helena and Why We Love It Helena and Why We Love It Ron & Peggy Holley Ron and I have lived in Helena the past 14 years. Before that, we lived in Pelham for 30 years, so they are intimately familiar with the area. Peggy and Ron were married August 16, 1969, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Birmingham. Ron said, “We met when Peggy was sitting on the front porch of my mom’s house when I came home from Vietnam. She was a friend of my sisters who were living with my mom at that time. ( I think she was still playing with dolls.) After dating for months, I proposed to her on a swing set in Harrison Park in Birmingham. The couple have two children: Jeremy, 48, and Ginger, 46. “Our children were raised in Pelham and attended Valley Elementary, Riverchase Middle School and Pelham High School,” continued Ron. “Jeremy currently resides in Orlando, Florida, and Ginger in The Woodlands, Texas. We have three grandchildren and one great-grandchild, who live in Texas and north Georgia.” Ron worked for CSX Railroad for 33 ½ years. He also volunteered with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department at their firearms range for 19 ½ years. Peggy works as an office administrator for a mental health practice and has worked for the same physician for the past 42 years. “The thing that brought us to Helena was a chamber meeting that Peggy attended in Old Town,” said Ron. “She saw the houses built in Old Town and thought there was a nice homey feel about the community. We

didn’t buy a house then, but I liked the way Old Town looked. I retired from the railroad and opened a store here — Major Dundee’s 1890s Mercantile. I was open seven days per week. That was the start of feeling like we ‘belonged,’” said Ron. “We started the first Civil War reenactment here, did gun fights on the streets of Old Town in period 1890s clothing and weapons. I started Trade Days on 2nd street once per month. It was during this time that we moved from Pelham to Helena.” “Helena brought us a sense of belonging and being a part of something, working with great people to do events highlighting Helena. Our children checked daily to see what was happening in Helena even though they didn’t live here (until Hal stopped his blog, No Sleep in Helena, that is).Now they do check the websites for Helena Beautiful (Peggy volunteers with the Helena Beautification Board) and Market Days,” Ron added. “One of the things we like about Helena is the close knit community feeling. It is the great feeling of working with like minded friends and others in the community that work both behind the scenes as well as the forefront, to make Helena the great community that it is. It’s called volunteerism,” he continued. “I love the bedroom community feeling we have and the events we have here.

By Ana Baker

We have the annual Buck Creek Festival put on by what I call ‘the Cris Nelson gang,’ the Helena Christmas Parade I call ‘the Joy Childers Mama gang,’ the Farmers Market ‘the Scot Newman bunch,’ Helena First Friday, Movies in the Park, Barktoberfest by Two by Two Rescure and the Helena Beautification Board and their many activities. All of these are put on by volunteers

who give of themselves and their time for the community [they are all free events]. These are some of the things that make the city of Helena such a fantastic place to live,” said Ron, who finished by saying, “It is not any one person, but a combination of many that makes this City of Helena so wonderful. As Mayor Hall is fond of saying, ‘It’s the place you want to be.’”

Helena and Why We Love It Billy and Phyllis Harris Billy Harris, better known to most people around these parts as “Billy Dean,” was born and raised right here in Helena. In fact, the home where he grew up sat about 50 feet from the home in which he and wife Phyllis currently reside on Helena Road in the heart of old Helena. Save for a short stint in the Army and about a year when he and wife, Phyllis, lived in Shelby after they were first married, he has been here in Helena all of his 84 years. They moved back here in 1957 when their youngest daughter was still a baby, and this is where they have stayed. Billy and Phyllis first met on a blind date. They were “fixed up” by a friend and relative of Phyllis’s in the early 1950s and have been together ever since. Their daughter, Pam, remembers that when she was a youngster and asked her mother how they met, Phyllis claimed that one day she was out looking under a tree for nuts and found Billy. (She says that pretty much sums up their life together—they have always been a fun-loving couple.) They were married in 1956. They have two daughters, Sandy and Pam. Pam and her husband live here in Helena next door to her parents, and Sandy lives in Jupiter, Florida. Billy worked for Fruehauf Trailer Company, working his way up from a shop mechanic to branch manager, which is the job he retired from in 1989. Phyllis was a clerk at W.B. Leedy Real Estate Company in Birmingham for a little over 20 years herself, and decided to pack it in when they got their youngest daughter through college. When asked what Helena has brought to their family, they both agreed that they can’t adequately

describe it. Billy has been an integral part of this city all of his life. As a child, there was not an inch of Helena that he didn’t explore. That was back in a time when people put into practice the “it takes a village” policy without ever having heard of it, so there wasn’t a man, woman, or child here that he didn’t know on a first-name basis. As an adult, he served on the Helena City Council for 32 years, as well as on numerous city committees. After retiring, he worked for the city in both the Utility Department and Public Works. He and Phyllis have been active members of Helena United Methodist Church for over 60 years.

“We’ve had a good life here. All of our dearest friends are here, at least the ones who are still with us, and we wouldn’t be happy anywhere else. We wouldn’t have wanted to build a life and family anywhere else in the world,” said Billy.

Helena Beautification Board Vice Chairman, Brian Puckett, named a RISING STAR at the American Rose Society’s national convention in San Diego, California For his work with the Helena Beautification Board, the Earth Kind Rose Trials and the cause of sustainability across the nation

Helena Earth Kind Rose Trial Curator, Brian Puckett, was award the Rising Star Award by the American Rose Society during an awards ceremony at its national convention in San Diego, California, recently. Founded in 1892, The ARS is an educational non-profit organization and the nation’s oldest single plant horticultural society, headquartered in Shreveport, Louisiana. This award was established to recognize and honor the work of a new generation of rosarians for their contributions in supporting the culture and appreciation of the rose. “This award, given to individuals under the age of 45 that have made outstanding contribu22 Winter 2019 / www.CityOfHelena.org

tions to the world of roses; and Brian Puckett has contributed to this worthy cause and to the American Rose Society with his work in establishing the first municipal Earth Kind trial garden in Helena, and through his efforts to educate the public and to increase membership in the American Rose Society,” said Pat Shanley, outgoing President of the ARS. Mr. Puckett’s achievements in the rose world have been many. In 2016, in his role as Vice Chairman of the Helena Beautification Board, he helped formulate a plan to revitalize the strip in Old Town Helena with plantings of native perennials and Earth Kind Roses. In 2017, he spearheaded a partnership with Texas A & M

AgriLife research which made Helena the nation’s first municipality to conduct an Earth Kind Rose Trial. The trial was launched in October of 2017 with much fanfare and is now in its second year. In 2018, he embarked on a nationwide speaking tour to educate the public on growing roses chemical free. “The work to determine ‘easy to grow’ roses for homeowners is something we can all get behind,” says Helena Beautification Board Chairman, Chris VanCleave, who has worked with Brian on these projects. “I don’t think people realize how many hours of planning and preparation goes into an effort of this caliber, and Brian was instrumental in ensuring its

success; not only for homeowners who will eventually purchase these roses, but for the contribution he’s made locally to enrich the lives of those who live in this great town, said VanCleave”. The Helena Beautification Board is an appointed board of the Helena City Council. The Board believes that people and places are profoundly connected and thriving communities are rooted in individual responsibility and action. They host a variety of opportunities for the community to come together and serve each year. Events are posted on the Helena Beautiful Facebook page and announced via Twitter at @TweetHomeHelena.

Greetings from the Jane B. Holmes Public Library!

I can report that your hometown library is doing great as we begin a new year. We have a great selection of new movies, music, and talking books. We also offer great services for e-books and audio. Call or stop by soon for details. Speaking of stopping by: Each year, I remind everyone that the start of the New Year is a great time to visit and make reading a bigger part of your life. With the hustle and bustle of daily life, it is important to read for pleasure and to improve your mind. It’s also FREE! There is a place you can visit to make these priorities a reality: The Public Library! The City of Helena, great volunteers, and a dedicated library staff work hard to provide great resources, so stop by soon to find out what we have to offer. It has been a busy fall of 2018, and here is an update on what has been happening: The library received a grant from our State House

of Representatives. Representatives Matt Fridy and Arnold Mooney stopped by the library with Checks totaling $2,000! The library is thankful for this kind contribution, and it shows a commitment by our State that the library is an important priority. The funding will be used to update our children and youth department, as well as purchasing reference materials and test prep resources. We appreciate the efforts of our Representatives on this important project. For the second straight year, The GFWC Helena Juniorettes held a book drive for the library. We thank the Juniorettes for thinking of us once again, and we received some great books. Special thanks to their co-advisors, Cathy Barker and Jan Greer, for providing dedicated service to Helena. (Pictured again this year are the Helena Juniorettes and our hard working Assistant Library Director, Tracy Arnold.) Speaking of another great year, the library had another dazzling and original float in the Helena Christmas Parade. Staff member Julie Lawson and her family

came through once again with a fun concept for our entry. Special thanks to Zach Lawson for his vision and persistence! In programming news, the library was excited to feature award winning speaker and Storyteller Dolores Hydock! Mrs. Hydock is a favorite of library patrons all over, and she delighted the Helena audience with a unique program: Starch in Their Petticoats: True Stories of Strong Women Who Settled the West. The library would like to thank Dolores, whose appearance was made possible by The Alabama Humanities Foundation. Be sure to check the library calendar for upcoming events and news! The library strives to provide new services, features, and programs, so stay tuned and visit often. Also, don’t forget Story Time every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:00 AM!

Helena High School Teacher of the Year 2018-2019

Spring McKinney

Spring McKinney was voted Helena High School’s Teacher of the Year for the 2018-1019 school year by a committee of teachers, students and administrators. Born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida, McKinney attended St. Petersburg College for two years before transferring to Troy to earn her degree. “I wanted the true college experience and looked at schools all over before choosing Troy. It had everything a big school offered but provided a ‘small school’ atmosphere,” she said. After graduating Troy, McKinney went back to Tampa to begin her teaching career at Gaither High School. “Gaither was so overcrowded that it ran on two completely different sessions. I taught during the 11:45am5:15pm afternoon session.” “I went to Sickle High School

after that for a couple of years. It was about this time that I got married to Keith McKinney who was in the RV business, and it wasn’t long before we were moving to North Carolina. I went to work at Freedom High School there. Not too long after this, my husband had a job opportunity in Alabama, so we moved here, and I took a job at Oak Mountain High School. Then we moved back to North Carolina in 2008. We were there for six years until HHS opened. My principal at Oak Mountain High had been Randy Fuller, and he had gone on to become Shelby County Superintendent of Education. I had previously met Jay Peoples, and when he was hired as HHS’s first principal, I was interviewed and hired as Department Chair for English here.” (The couple had

decided they wanted to raise their kids here after living and teaching in Shelby County Schools.) McKinney currently teaches AP Language and Composition. “I think it’s amazing how Helena manages to keep its ‘small town feel.’ From the banners on the streets to all the folks walking around in their Husky gear, the people of Helena take a lot of pride in the school they fought so hard to get here.” The McKinneys have two daughters: Grace is 15 and a sophomore cheerleader at Oak Mountain High School, and Charlie Ann is a 14-year-old freshman here at Helena High, where she is active in SGA and a member of the golf team. Charlie Ann has taken golf lessons since she was 8, so watch out for her next year. (She has to sit out a

mandatory year after transferring.) The family lives off the 9th green of the Inverness Golf Course, and McKinney says that when they have free time, “We are usually out on the golf course.” McKinney concludes by saying how proud she is of the way the Husky spirit has grown since the school’s inception. “Our spirit has grown as Huskies here. The initial group of four-year Huskies are the students are the ones who set such a wonderful foundation, and it continues to grow. Our SGA has become stronger, and students seem driven to achieve here—over 30 seniors who took the ACT made over 30 on it.” (36 is a perfect score.) Thanks to Spring McKinney, HHS Teacher of the Year, for all she does to keep the Husky spirit alive and well!

Cahaba Dental Arts celebrates 10 years in Helena Dr. Jayme Mashayekh would like to thank Helena and the surrounding community for their strong support during her first 10 years at Cahaba Dental Arts on County Road 52 West near Riverwoods in Helena. Since opening her practice in 2008, she has added Hamid, her husband, as practice manager. “It is amazing,” said Dr. Jayme, “that in just 10 years here, we have witnessed patients who started here as kids grow up and have children of their own! The growth here has been brisk, and we are proud to be a part of it all. We try to stay as involved as pos28 Winter 2019 / www.CityOfHelena.org

sible and were as thrilled as the rest of Helena was at the opening of our own Helena High School. We try to sponsor as many school functions as possible to do our part in supporting all our terrific Helena schools. We have enjoyed being involved with First Fridays and the Buck Creek Festival each year. All the city festivals and events show just what a wonderful environment that the people who live here and the city government have created—we think it is a very special place indeed.” Dr. Jayme went on, “Our practice has grown from myself and one staffer to its current size:

in addition to Hamid and myself, we have four full-time staff members, many of whom are getting married and raising growing families of their own.” “Our annual candy buy back after Halloween has grown each year and provides a fun way to help educate patients on good dental hygeine while providing a way for local kids to cash in their unneeded candy for a little pocket money,” added Hamid. “We also added a CEREC machine in 2017 enabling us to offer same day crowns,” said Hamid, pointing to the hightech system. “This as opposed to

making impressions and placing temporaries in place only to have to come back after a week or two to place the permanent crowns.” “When we hire a new employee, we look not only for well qualified applicants, but also ones who have our own appreciation that a dental office can be trying enough. We really want to give our patients a great experience when they come into Cahaba Dental Arts,” finished Hamid. If you are in need of a good family dentist, make an appointment now to visit Cahaba Dental Arts and experience the difference for yourself.

Beautification Board appoints Two new members The Helena City Council approved the appointments of two citizens to the Helena Beautification Board during a regularly scheduled meeting on January 14. Kim Edwards and Malinda Nichols were appointed upon a recommendation from the beautification board and will serve the remainder of this board’s term in office. “The term of office for board members runs concurrent with the council, and we are delighted to have them join our team,” said Beautification Board Chairman Chris VanCleave. Kim Edwards holds a marketing degree, is a sculptor 30 Winter 2019 / www.CityOfHelena.org

and artist who has a love of interior design as well as being a noted gardener in the community. Her hillside garden has won beautification awards and the accolades of all who have visited there. Malinda Nichols is somewhat of a style maven in Birmingham having used her talents at Cottage Living, Southern Lady and Taste of the South magazines. She is also a crafter, baker, wife and mother. “Making Helena Beautiful is a duty we all share and can take pride in,” said VanCleave. The appointment of these two ladies will only serve to enhance an already stellar assembly of individuals who give of their time, talent and effort to enhance the quality of life for us all. With all that is happening in the world, the need to bring

people together for a common purpose is so important. In doing so, we create a landscape that will not only help attract new business investment, but will also help create a sense of harmony and community among those who call Helena home.” Van Cleave finished. The Board believes that people and places are profoundly connected and thriving communities are rooted in individual responsibility and action. Husky Basketball finishing strong in first season under HEAD COACH BILLY GRANT Nearing the end of the 20182019 basketball season, we sat down with Husky Head Coach Billy Grant to get his take on his first season in Helena. “I think we have a competitive team this year, said Coach Grant, whose team was 16-8 and 3-2 in area play so far with big consecutive wins against area foe, Pelham, and neighbor, Thompson, both on the road and in commanding style. “We beat Pelham at our place earlier in the year, but beating them at their place hints at this team’s competitive nature,” said the veteran coach. The Huskies wrap up this regular season with three games at home: Chelsea, Thompson and Oak Mountain. Chelsea is an area game, so the team has a chance at a 4-2 area record on the season. We asked the coach how he sees the future of Husky basketball, and he said he’d like to work more closely with Helena Middle School Coach Kane Peckham to try and get the middle school and high school squads more on the same page when it comes to systems and play. The longtime coach, who had spectacular success at a previous stop—an 18 year stint at Pleasant Grove—said that was the thing he

instituted at Pleasant Grove, from having input in selecting teams to coordinating systems to help middle school players more rapidly grasp the concepts they’d need to compete in high school. “Good basketball players can get away with things in middle school that they can’t on the high school level, because players in high school just play on a different level and are more matured physically,” he said, “similar to the way great high school players have to adjust once they get to college.” Standouts on the Husky squad this season include a senior and two juniors. “Nate Andrews, a 6’6” senior wing player is just so level headed. His demeanor never changes,” said Coach Grant. “He keeps our team calm no matter what adversity we face during a game. Then we have two ‘fireball’ junior guards—Dante Cave and Caden Pierce. When one of these three get into foul trouble, our game takes a step back. Other players of note for the Huskies include senior forward Matthew Hobbick, junior guard LaDarrius Rice and senior forward Parker King. The biggest surprise of the season would have to be the play we get from senior Jonah Hyde, who won the state high jump

last spring. Jonah took a year off from basketball before deciding to play his senior year, and he has given us great play at center. Jonah has a scholarship to run track next season in college.” “I have two great assistant coaches this season. Dustin Kennedy calls the offensive sets for us and coached an undefeated Oak Mountain Middle School team last season.” Coach Grant calls his own defensive sets. “We also have K.C. Dickerson helping out this year who previously coached at Gardendale High School and then Phillip Lawson coaches the freshman team and is a former head coach at Fultondale High.” Coach Grant is originally from Birmingport and played on two Oak Grove High teams that played in the state championship. He got out of basketball for a time in college and played baseball on scholarship at Tennessee State. “I have always loved basketball, though, so when the opportunity to coach it at Edgewater Junior High arose after college, I took the job. I had a part-time job coaching baseball as well at Minor High during this time. From there, I took the job as basketball coach at Gilmore Bell Vocational High School and was

there until an opening came along at Pleasant Grove High,” Coach Grant said. Over the next 18 years, he amassed several Coach of the Year awards and a majority of the wins that culminated in a ceremony presenting him with a 500-Win game ball which rests currently on the filing cabinet in his office. After Pleasant Grove, he served a few years at Pell City before being hired as the head man here after Coach Laatsch moved to Spain Park. Coach Grant has a number of college greats among his list of past players. Among them are: DJ Towns and Ricky Tarrant who went on to play for Bama and Corey Smith who went on to play for Southern Miss. Coach Grant has a total of 18 former players who signed scholarships to play basketball at the next level, a fact of which he is deservedly very proud. In his off time, Coach Grant says he tries to keep up with two daughters—Madison is a senior at Pleasant Grove High, and Taylor is a sophomore at UA. We look forward to following the progress of Helena Basketball under the experienced leadership of Coach Billy Grant! Go Huskies!

for Duke Gifted Program

Reese Unnoppet, a 4th grade student at Prince of Peace Catholic School in Hoover, has been invited to join the Duke University Talent Identification Program’s prestigious 4th–6th Grade Talent Search. Each year, a select group of academically talented students in the United States are identified as academically gifted based on their exceptional grade-level standardized test scores at or above the 95th percentile qualify. Those students are invited to participate 40 Winter 2019 / www.CityOfHelena.org

in the 4th–6th Grade Talent Search and to take the optional PSAT 8/9, which is designed for eighth and ninth graders. Taking an above-gradelevel test is an experience that allows these gifted fourth, fifth, and sixth graders to more accurately gauge their academic abilities and potential, as they need more advanced examinations than they find in their grade level. Participants in the 4th–6th Grade Talent Search also receive a variety of support services and gain access to research and other information about using their academic abilities more effectively. Reese Unnoppet is the daughter of Dr. Nop & Sonya Unnoppet of Helena.

Senior Night for Husky Wrestling Coach Keith Maple told us on Senior Night, he felt like at least four members of his squad should make it through to state, and hopefully, more will qualify: Junior Michael Moran, out with a concussion last season, wrestles in the 113 pound weight class, sophomore Will Miller, who competed at state last year, wrestles this year in the 126 pound class, junior Nathan Dunaway wrestles in the 220 pound class. He only weighs 204, but he won the state title last year. And “Big” Will Miller, who wrestles in the 138 pound class this year. Wrestling’s Senior Night featured three athletes January 22: Blake Breckinridge, William Miller and Mathew Yunke were honored with their parents just before a three-way bout between Helena, McAdory and Springville High Schools. “Our team points have suffered some this year after we lost several excellent wrestlers off last year’s squad, but the guys here have all worked hard and have done their best. I’m proud of all their efforts,” said Coach Maple. “We are now working towards sectionals which will determine which wrestlers move on to the state tournament. We are 6A now which moves us to the south, which means we travel to Montgomery as opposed to Birmingham. But we will go out and compete and do our best,” finished Coach Maple. Best of luck at sectionals to all the Husky wrestling team and best of luck to the three seniors set to graduate this spring—Go Huskies!

2019 Top Wrestlers, left-right: Jr Nathan Dunaway, Sr. Will Miller, Soph. Will Miller, and Jr. Michael Moran 42 Winter 2019 / www.CityOfHelena.org

We talked with the seniors and a few others who are on track, according to Coach Maple, to contend at state this year. Here’s a little of what each of these wrestlers had to say… Senior Mathew Yunke - “This is my 11th year to wrestle. I’ve been on the Husky wrestling team four years. I currently attend Shelby County’s Career Technical Education Center half days, where I study welding. I plan to attend Jeff State in the fall to purue a career in my family’s tool and die business,” he said. On senior night, Mathew presented his mom, Chrissie with a bouquet of flowers. Mathew’s dad is Scott Yunke. Senior Blake Breckinridge - Blake is also a four year wrestler for the Huskies, and says he has been sick a lot this year, and it has caused him to miss weight a lot this year, but he does his best to support his team. Blake plans to attend Jeff State next fall and would like to ultimately get into the engineering field. On senior night, Blake presented his mom, Amber, with a bouquet of flowers as she and dad, Jeff, were recognized. Senior William Miller - William had a concussion November 24, and is just getting back into wrestling after missing half the season. He is set to finish strong though, and Coach Maple said “Big Will” has a chance to move on to the state tournament again this year. William says he plans to get into nursing or physical therapy in college with his school of choice being South Alabama. On senior night, Will presented mom, Kim, with a bouquet of flowers as she and dad, Bill, were recognized. Junior Nathan Dunaway - “The only wrestler I have lost to this year is Homewood’s Carlos Figueroa. He’s currently ranked 5th in the nation, and I hope to get a chance at him again at state. I currently weigh about 205. Some have asked me to lose a few pounds and compete in a lower weight class, but running from a fight is not my nature.” The Huskies’ top gridiron player at linebacker, Nathan says his dream would be to get a preferred walk-on spot to play for Bama. He says he runs a 4.7 40 currently, so the possibility is certainly there for him. Junior Michael Moran - A 6th year wrestler, Michael had a concussion in December of last season and didn’t get to start training until October 2018, so he missed all the off season training. “I still think I have a good shot at making it to state this year, though,” said Michael. Sophomore Will Miller - Will wrestles at 126 pounds this year (up from 106 last year). He has only lost five matches all season. “I feel like I have a good chance at state this year. I’m going to play it smart the rest of the way by eating right, being sure I get enough sleep, and keeping an eye on my weight,” he said. Best of luck to all our Huskies as they battle to dominate the rest of the way and take as many wrestlers as possible to the State Wrestling Tournament, held February 14-16th in Huntsville.

Coach Guy ready to see his 2019 Huskies on the baseball diamond State Championship winning Baseball Coach P.J. Guy says he is excited that the season is almost here. “We graduated 20 baseball players over the past two years,” said Coach Guy, “and several of those are now playing college ball. We have a small senior class this season with only five on our team, but they can play winning ball. And we have a large group of talented underclassmen, and I am excited to see what the future holds for us.” The 2019 team features only four returning players with significant game experience, so the challenge this year will be in developing talent to fill gaps in the roster. “With so many moving on, it creates opportunities for younger players to earn playing time, so this is an exciting year for us as coaches—there is a lot of talent for us to work with,” said Coach Guy. “We had what I think was the best off season conditioning program in our history. The guys put in a lot of time in the workouts getting stronger and increasing their speed. We have 12 players this year with pitching on their resumé, so it’s an open call when practice starts so we can work out this year’s best pitching rotation. The competition is open at every spot on the field,” he continued. Practice starts in early February with opening day right around the corner on February 22. It’s President’s Day, so school is out. “And hopefully, we’ll get a break from all this rain,” laughed Coach Guy. Opening Day will pit the Huskies against two top teams in the state: Auburn, the defending state 7A champions, and Cullman, the team the Huskies defeated in the 6A State Championship series in 2017. “We play Auburn at 11am, then Auburn and Cullman play, and we will play Cullman last, probably somewhere around 4pm.” While there are unknowns every year, this is the first year the Huskies have so many without high school playing experience, but the athletes on this team posess a wealth of talent. “All these kids not only play school ball, they compete on travel ball teams in the off season, as well. Now it’s time for us to take what we have learned up to his point to the diamond and see what happens,” finished Coach Guy.

Seniors sign scholarships: left, pitcher Avery Barnett signs with Mississippi College and right, catcher Megan Fortson signs with Marion Military Institute, (both pictured above with Coach Kouveras and varsity assistant Joel Morris.)

COACH HEIDI KOUVERAS ready to debut her 2019 Husky Varsity Softball Team Coach Heidi Kouveras was all smiles when we caught up with her the week before practice began for the Husky Varsity Softball program and just a month before the home opener February 20th against McAdory. “We return only four seniors on this year’s team,” said Coach Kouveras, “but two of them have committed to play at the next level, so there is some leadership here, and a bumper crop of incoming freshmen from our undefeated middle school team last year.” The two college bound seniors are pitcher, Avery Barnett, and catcher, Megan Fortson. Two other valuable seniors include Chaney Handley, outfielder and the Huskies’ speedy left handed slapper and outfielder Mary Haywood, currently on the injured reserve list. Big hitter Kelsi Bargman is back. The junior outfielder is one of the squad’s most valuable players at the plate. “She is a hard

worker and plays with a great deal of consistency,” says her coach. Junior Torie White, the talented middle infielder who is committed to play for the UAB Blazers at the next level, adds additional power to the Huskies line up at the plate. The Huskies have some young talent coming in the circle this season, too. Besides sophomore pitcher, Peyton Doriety, the incoming freshman class features pitcher Ann Marie Stanbridge and pitcher/infielder Camryn Bailey. “We lost some really good ones last year,” said the coach, “but I feel good about the opportunities available for some of our younger players to come in and compete for playing time. It will be a different game we’ll be playing this year, more of a short game, but we can win with that.” Best of luck to the 2019 Helena Husky softball team. It won’t be long now—

Barktoberfest offers dog lovers fun with 4th annual festival It was hard to tell who was enjoying this autumn Sunday afternoon more, the dogs or their owners. The annual, family-friendly event, hosted by Two by Two Rescue not only adds another fun day for Helena to put on its event calendar, it raises much needed funds for this area dog rescue. The organizers and vendors had plenty of food and treats available for both the dogs and their owners. Children attending enjoyed a Kid’s Zone with inflatables, face painting, and other games. Kids loved the trackless train and pony rides, too. Owners and their dogs took advantage of a photo booth where they left with pictures to take home. Dogs were available for adoption and/or cuddles in Two by Two’s adoption center, and live music was provided by The Martini Shakers. And there were even doggie baths available in case a pooch came without the benefit of having had one recently. An off-leash dog park was also set up so furry friends could run around and play. Dog owners took advantage of a low cost shot clinic on site to update their pet’s vaccinations or to have a microchip inserted. There was also a gift shop so visitiors could take home some Two by Two Rescue gear. A silent auction and door prizes insured that there was something for everyone at Two by Two’s annual event. See you next fall!

The Main Event of the Holiday Season in Helena is its annual Christmas Parade. With a very modest start 48 years ago, the holiday event attracts hundreds of participants each year as well as spectators in the thousands who line the streets to catch candy as it is thrown out, to witness all the floats and to get the whole city into the Christmas Spirit. A huge thanks to Kym and Joy Childers and to all the volunteers who make this event possible each year. This one was rain-soaked, but still loads of fun! The Grand Marshall for the 2018 Helena

We hope your holidays were as bright as the smiles on these pages!

Helena’s Tim Vakakes earns post season honors for his work at Birmingham’s Jackson Olin High School Helena’s Tim Vakakes, head football coach for Jackson Olin High School, has been selected Coach of the Year for Birmingham City Schools and was named FOX6 Sideline Coach of the Year, too. Tim took a team that had forgotten how to win and changed their culture overnight. It’s the same thing he and his dad, Jim, did as a team at Fairfield years back. They thrived at Fairfield for 11 years before Jim retired, taking a team that had forgotten how to win and making the playoffs nine of their 11

years there. Tim was the OC there. Over the past few weeks, Tim has welcomed many of the top college coaches in the land to Ensley, two of which just played in the National Championship, Dabo Swinney and Nick Saban. One wonders if a college coach doesn’t soon recognize the talent coaching on the sideline at JO and throw the bank at him… Tim is married to the former Alexis Petelos, and the couple has two children, Sam and Ella. Congratulations, Tim!

You might want a second helping of BROCCOLI… According to studies involving respected institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, researchers have found that sulphurafane, a chemical found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, is effective at slowing the growth of cancer cells and may play a role in preventing the development of certain types of cancer. Pass that broccoli, please. TO ADVERTISE, CALL the Publisher at 746.1188 / MyHelenaCityNews.com / Winter 2019
