ypertension has been called the silent killer. It can creep up and lay you out without ever firing a warning shot. It can lead to heart disease, stroke and a dozen other medical maladies. And to make matters worse, it may not be until one of these hits you that you even realize you have a problem. Such was the case with me recently. I have had (and ignored) mild hypertemsion since I was in my late 20s. Doctors say that ideally, blood pressure should be around 120/80 or below, but as far as I can remember, there was never any sermons as to the absolute importance of it until mine suddenly began to creep up into the 150/100 range the past couple of years. I was put on a low dose medication called Lopressor and told to take a baby aspirin each day, and that maintained it for awhile, and my doctor said all seemed fine. I just had a physical in November which I passed with flying colors. But I never checked my BP when the “pressure cooker” was on, and as it turns out, stress can be a major contributor to high blood pressure. Hey, a lot of businesses have pressure, and publishing is no different, especially in this tough economy. You fight for everything you get, and sometimes, the hours you work can border on insanity. One day last month, I remember starting at 6 a.m., working through the day, the entire night and finishing up around 1p.m. the following afternoon. I used to do that a lot in my 30s, but now that I am in my 50s, it seems to take a bigger toll. My blood pressure had been creeping up into the 160/100 range and occasionally higher, and I would still take the low dose of blood pressure medicine and it would come down some. (Though not nearly enough, as I was soon to find out. This should have been my wake up call.) One Saturday a few weeks back, out of the blue, I felt a burning sensation on the skin around one of my eyes, almost as if I had spilled a chemical on it. My wife was doing her nails in the next room, and I asked her if she had spilled something in the vents, which she hadn’t. I do not know for sure if that was part of my event or was totally unrelated, but when I stood up, I felt a little dizzy, a little addled (though I could still carry on a conversation), and I did not seem to have a good sense of balance. I went out in the yard to move the sprinklers and while bending over, I fell on my keister getting soaked with the sprinkler going off in my face. I laughed at my clumsiness and came back in and told my daughter I felt all “swimmy headed.” Afraid something was going on, I took five baby aspirin. (Doctors later told me that was a good move,

but a better one would have been to call 911.) Like the wise one I am, I did not go to the doctor until the next Tuesday. (Hey, I had work to do!) My doctor said he would like to send me for an MRI of my head. He called me back in the next morning and informed me that I had experienced a stroke. “Consider it a wakeup call,” he said. It’s only about a 7mm area and should heal fine with no lasting effects, but we had better get your blood pressure under control.” So now he wants me to get serious about it… Consider me a true believer now. Be aware that if you are on blood pressure medication, the amount necessary to control your blood pressure may increase with time and age. And even though the extra medicine may initially slow you down a bit, the trade off is well worth it if you can avoid a stroke. I was a lucky camper and can only give thanks to God above for looking after stubborn people like me. There are two kinds of stroke, and the treatment I prescribed myself (5 baby aspirins) could have been disastrous had mine been a different type of stroke. The smart money always calls 911 if there is any doubt. “It’s what we get paid for,” said a Pelham EMT I talked to last week. For warning signs of stroke and other information related to stroke, visit www. strokeassociation.org. For information on hypertension, visit www.nathypertension.org. I had two of the symptoms associated with stroke and could have just as easily died or been left paralyzed by not seeking immediate help. Remember, if in doubt, call 911! If you have blood pressure above 120/80, talk to your doctor about ways in which you can get it under control, but remember, your doctor will not hold a gun to your head, you must take the lead in your own health care! Until next time, P.S. For some people, losing weight can help lower your blood pressure. I guess I now have all the incentive I need to lose that fat masquerading as a spare tire around my waist!

Resort Living in Pelham’s Ballantrae I magine a mountain vacation resort. It has a beautifully laid out 18-hole golf course surrounded by gorgeous Southern forests and post card views from every angle. Imagine a clubhouse (reminiscent of a Scottish manor house overlooking the 18th hole) with a thoroughly stocked and professionally managed pro shop, a 20-acre practice center and driving range and serene, pastoral lakes. In the clubhouse, imagine a dining room chocked full of old world charm. With award-winning chefs at the helm, you’re ensured good food whether its a quick sandwich after a round of golf, a Saturday morning breakfast buffet or a special dinner for the family. Now imagine that we have not just described a mountain golf resort, but the place you’re about to call home! Welcome to Ballantrae, Pelham’s premiere golf resort community with a top shelf swim club and a fitness center to boot. Homebuilder Dallan Ruch, a native of Tallahassee, Florida, says he fell in love with the community the first time he saw it. As evidence, he bought nearly 60 lots and decided to build homes with touches normally reserved for far more expensive houses in a price range that is affordable in today’s economic climate. It helps that most of his crew is made up of family members. Dallan is married Angie, a Chelsea native, and “the boss,” according to Dallan. His father owns a lumber company in Florida, so he gets good advice on building materials and fixtures for the homes he builds giving him the ability to offer special touches in each and every home he builds. His mother-in-law, Mary Murphy, is his on-site manager and also serves as his decorative artist. Touches like the antiqued edges and creases in a fireplace mantle or on the kitchen cabinets in DAL Properties Homes are the result of her artistic talents.

4

Pelham City News Summer 2011

Dallan said that he discovered the beauty of Ballantrae through an old friend from his baseball days at Auburn, Ballantrae Golf Club champion Mark Weeks. “He kept after me telling me how beautiful it was out here until I finally came out and looked it over to see for myself.” And the rest, as they say, is history. An Auburn grad, Dallan played baseball for the Tigers 1994-’96 with the likes of Tim Hudson and Mark Bellhorn before getting into the building business. DAL Properties’ homes start at about $194,900, far less than other homes in the area. After touring one of them though, you’d think you were in a far more expensive home. From the doors and high ceilings, to the granite counter tops and custom cabinetry and mouldings in the kitchen to baths with custom tile work, soaking tubs and see-through showers to the elaborate scrollwork in the cabinets below the bathroom sinks— his and hers in the master— you will be hard pressed to find more

custom features in a house selling for twice as much as a “DAL-built” home. Kitchens are equipped with the latest stainless appliances from Pelham’s AllSouth Appliance. A feature of Dallan’s master bedrooms are high trayed ceilings with recessed lighting giving a look you just can’t get any other way. Sod extends all the way around to the back yard of DAL’s homes giving them that “lived in” look. (And saving you time and future expense.) There is so much more to a DAL built home than we have room to describe on this page, you’ll have to drive out and look for yourself. Ballantrae is just minutes away from

the back entrance to all the stores the Alabaster Promenade offers, from Belk and JC Penney to Best Buy, Target and Walmart. With restaurant selections that are growing by the week (there’s even a Starbucks for its devotees), you will feel a world away when you live in Ballantrae but actually be so close to everything you need. Which is, I think, exactly what the original developer, Mobley Development, Inc., had in mind. Ballantrae’s exclusive broker since 2003 is RE/MAX First Choice. Their number in Pelham is 663-4270. Model homes are open daily. Drive out and see for yourself how easy it is to live in paradise!

ane Bishop, the longtime secretary for the athletic department at PHS, died recently. She leaves behind: husband, James; a daughter, Brianna, a student at the University of Alabama; and twin sons, Michael and Andrew, who bothy play baseball at Jacksonville State University. Coach Burnett says that Jane will be sorely missed around the athletic department. “She was not only an excellent employee, but was like a mother to many of our athletes.” From the perspective of the owners of this magazine, Jane was a friend for many years, first at the ballpark where our children played baseball and softball together, but later as the friendly voice who answered the phone anytime we needed something to do with sports at the high school. She always went above and beyond to get what we needed, whether it was a player’s stats or some other tidbit of information that helped make our stories more complete. She was always smiling, and a dedicated worker, but you could always tell anytime you saw her with her family that her true calling and happiness came from her job as a wife and mother. In this writer’s opinion, there is no greater calling in this world that we call home. Rest in peace.

Introducing Mike Jeffreys: Oak Mountain State Park’s New Superintendent

O

ak Mountain State Park has a new ‘young gun’ holding its reins. Thirty-four-year-old Mike Jeffreys (unavailable for picture) recently took on the job as the new superintendent for our local state park, Alabama’s largest, and is excited to see what the future holds. “There’s a lot of untapped potential here,” Mike said. So far, Mike says he has been “highly impressed” with the level of professionalism he has seen. He notes that “the working relationship between the city, county, and state park is the best I have ever seen.” He may be young, but he has plenty of experience in the field. Originally from Russellville, Mike joined the military after attending Lake Michigan College. For four years, Mike served with the Air Force military police (MP). He enjoyed it well enough, but the call of the wild just kept shouting at him. “I have always been an outdoorsman,” he said, so when he returned home, he got a job as a ranger at Lake Guntersville State Park. Motivated, Mike moved up the ranks quickly and became the assistant manager of Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville; then was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Joe Wheeler State Park in Rogersville. Finally, in April, he got his chance to run his very own state park. Mike, wife Shelly, and their newborn son, Cash, packed up and moved south to Pelham. Mike’s first month on the job has been quite busy. On May 21, the park hosted the Xterra race and held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting for the brand-new Equestrian

Campground, which is being funded by Shelby County as part of a lodging tax capital improvement project. The Outback Riders, an equestrian group, assisted the county is designing the layout of the new campsites, according to County Manager Alex Dudchock. This new campground is accessible to the riding trails and provides ample space and services for horse trailers including electric, water, and sewer connections. Mike encourages the public, especially locals, to come and check out the park if you have not visited in a while. If there is something you would like to see offered, Mike says his door is always open to suggestions: “I will put 100 percent into making this park a better place to visit,” he said. While Mike is committed to creating new activities and amenities for public use, don’t forget about the ones that are already there: cabins and campsites; pavilions and a beach; hiking and biking trails; horseback riding; petting farm; golf course; canoes and paddleboats; and three fishing lakes. Several additional independently-operated attractions are located inside the park: a BMX track operated by Oak Mountain BMX; the Alabama Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, which rehabilitates birds of prey; and Samford University’s Oak Mountain Interpretive Center, a veritable treasure trove of educational information and hands-on learning about nature. As a state law enforcement officer with the Department of Conservation, Mike is dedicated to finding a balance that allows nature to be preserved and enjoyed. “My primary job is conserving national resources for the public, not from the public,” he said. For more information regarding park recreation, call the Oak Mountain State Park office at (205) 620-2520 or visit the website at www.AlaPark.com. Double Oak Trail in Pelham’s Oak Mountain State Park was recently named one of the nation’s 25 Best Trail Runs in America. Oak Mountain State Park’s Double Oak Trail is a 17-mile single track loop that winds through lush green hardwoods, around a large lake with several strenuous climbs to ridges with beautiful views. With their central location and ample warehouse, ThreeM was used as a drop off spot by generator distributors helping other lawn small engine shops that were in need of, but could not get the shipments. “We sold more products in those few days than we have in 10 years, but the feeling of being able to help someone in need was much better than the business part of it,” Michael concluded.

Andrew Zow—Good to be Home

F

ormer Alabama quarterback Andrew Zow and his family are glad to be back in Pelham. “We moved back last summer. I have owned a house in Pelham for the last six or so years. I moved to Florida, where I coached at my former high school for the last three years,” said Andrew. Union County High School, in Lake Butler, Florida, is where Andrew, as quarterback, won three state championships. Andrew and his wife Amebriss are the parents of three children: A.J., Avry and Ashton. “I was ready to move back to Alabama, to the Pelham area. My wife and I both grew up in Florida, and we both have a lot of relatives there, so it was good to be there for three years. I was ready to get back to Alabama and get closer to my business though, Andrew Zow and Associates, which I started before I left. Football in itself helps you deal with people all the time, and in business, that’s what you do, hard work, staying after it. Football has always been a passion of mine, and the three years I coached really helped me as well in my business. You know, I’m a people person,” he said. Andrew’s company works as a broker for utilities, companies like Alabama Power Company and automotive companies like Mercedes and Honda. “When you play football at a place like the University of Alabama, especially quarterback,

people are watching you, you are held accountable, and in business, it is the same way. You deal with people every day, and being part owner of this company, you are held accountable for your actions, and what you do in the business to grow the business. In football it’s tough, and in the business world its tough. Things don’t always go your way. You try and learn from everyone you meet,” said Andrew. Andrew remarked how he and his family love the convenience of the Pelham area, how they particularly like Longhorn’s in Alabaster and O’Charley’s in Pelham. When they were in Florida, they were in a small town where there weren’t as many options for eating out. Andrew said he and his family are very active in the city sports leagues and have joined the YMCA. His children are very involved in different sports and activities and he even helped with coaching at the YMCA for the first time this past year. Andrew is frequently asked to help out with local teams, especially with quarterbacks, and somehow manages to help when he can, and still run his business and raise a family. “It’s a great community, it’s growing, Alabaster and Pelham, and Helena, and it is always nice to go home to a safe neighborhood. You are not far from what is happening in Birmingham, but you’re not too close to get lost or wrapped up in the big city. We’ve gotten back to our roots,” said Andrew.

is white hair shines beneath the fluorescent lights; although that is not necessarily what draws your attention. As he makes his rounds, laughter fills the space as he charismatically chats up the pool hall patrons. Looking at him today, it is hard to tell that nearly four years ago, Frank Gattina, owner/ operator of Poppa G’s Billiards, had a heart attack. A smoker since junior high, it did not take long for him to realize what he had to do. He quit cold turkey. “It’s a fresh start in the truest sense,” he said. Yet, for Frank’s doctor, that alone was not enough to ensure that “Poppa G” would be around to see his grandchildren grow up. “My doctor was all over me about second-hand smoke,” he said. Spending long nights running the pool hall, Frank was constantly taking it all in. “He said I might as well just start smoking again,” said Frank. Recently, Frank found that it was time to move his decades-old pool hall to a newer location, choosing a spot just down the road in the Alpine Square Shopping Center across Highway 31 from the post office. After some careful consideration, Frank decided that this was the time to see how Poppa G’s would look without its usual thick haze and gave a non-smoking policy a trial run. “I weighed the options,” he said, “and I was afraid it was not going to work.” Still unsure of how his regular crowd would react, Frank boldly took the opportunity to make an important change for his health. After only a month in the new location, “I feel great!” He said. Young and old, smokers or not, members of Poppa G’s “family” of amateur pool players generally agree that the change is certainly for the better. One of the things that makes Frank happiest about the new and improved Poppa G’s is the fact that his clothes still smell fresh and clean when he gets off work. While the old billiards bar was not what everybody would call very “family friendly,” Frank and his wife, Tammy, want people to know that the new Poppa G’s certainly is. Every member of the family can enjoy pool together, casually or competitively. “When I bought the place ten years ago, Tammy hated pool,” he said. “Now she plays more than I do.” The fun doesn’t stop at the table, though. An avid music-lover and musician, Frank is looking forward to adding karaoke and live bands to the list of entertainment possibilities. He admits though, that he will likely still prefer his jukebox. Poppa’s also serves up a full menu of tasty snacks and sandwiches seven days a week, from 3:00 p.m. until. As Frank always says, “If you’re playing, we’re staying.” So go on out and shoot some pool—smoke free!

Geaux Play Gets Its Sports On

rad Hall has been playing baseball since he was five and has been active in the sport ever since. He played minor league ball for three years and has six years of professional coaching experience. Working as an assistant coach in the Czech Republic, New Zealand, and Sweden, Brad has travelled the world in the name of baseball. He has worked with thirteen pitchers who signed with major league organizations, and works personally with pro athletes, such as Stephen Strasburg. “I’ve been around baseball my whole life. It’s all I do,” says Brad of his affinity for the sport. His wife Lisa has more than twenty years of experience in the fitness world. She played softball in college, was a fitness coordinator for a local gym, has been a fitness consultant for ABC 33/40, and has a 3rd degree black belt in Taekwondo. At Geaux Play Lisa teaches spin classes, does personal training, and leads boot camps. For those uneasy about the term “boot camp,” there’s no need to worry. As Brad puts it, “Most people think of boot camp as a military style [workout].” He says it’s an intense workout, but also promises there won’t be a drill sergeant yelling in anyone’s face.

Lisa & Brad Hall, owners of Geaux Play Sports Training & Fitness

The personal training is just that, personal. Everything from nutrition plans to work out routines are modified according to individuals’ specific needs. “I look at the individual and find out what’s going to

motivate them,” says Lisa. Geaux Play offers training and fitness for both children and adults, working with seven year olds and pro athletes alike. They offer baseball and softball lessons, as well as instruction in pitching, hitting, catching, fielding, throwing, and speed training. But the facility doesn’t cater exclusively to baseball and softball. “We offer our performance training for all sports,” says Brad. The Halls also have a heart for missions, and hope to start their own baseball league in Nicaragua. With palpable sincerity Brad says, “We’re using what we do here to change the world.” Lisa adds, “This is more than a job to us. This is a passion. We get to use our passion to reach out to other people.” It’s safe to say that at Geaux Play you’re in experienced hands, and to invest your time there is to invest in something global.

s graduation nears, Pelham High School senior and salutatorian Christian Holler looks forward to coming back home. “He wants my job,” said Billy Crandall, chuckling. Christian has known Billy, Director of the Pelham Parks and Recreation Department, for most of his life through playing baseball at City Park. “I’ve always looked up to Mr. Billy,” said Christian, “because he seemed to love his job.” As a freshman, Christian began volunteering to work the city Easter egg hunt each year, just to get a taste of working with the city department. Following in the Holler-family footsteps, Christian’s career plan seems a natural choice. “My family has worked for the city forever,” he said. Christian’s grandfather and uncle both spent many years in Pelham municipal service, and his father, Steve, is currently a Lieutenant with the Pelham Fire Department. His parents even met at City Hall while his mother, Daphne, was working there. During his tenure at Pelham High, Christian was very involved in extracurricular activities. He enjoyed serving as the Vice President of Peer Helpers, a school organization that focuses on volunteering. As the Sports Producer for PHS News, he and his younger brother, Mackenzie, had a blast doing their weekly sports segment, “Holler Time.” Christian did not just talk about sports, though, he served as captain of the Pelham golf team as well. Graduating with honors and a 3.9 GPA, Christian was recently awarded the Troy University Chancellor’s Scholarship. In the fall, he will begin working toward his dream job by pursuing a major in Sports and Fitness Management with a minor in Recreation. Best of luck to Christian as he goes off to college, and when you graduate, come on back. As they say at the Motel 6, we’ll leave the light on for you!

Good Hands. With Pelham’s Senior Graduating Class of 2011

A

s the Pelham High School Class of 2011 prepared for graduation, six seniors were selected by their guidance counselor, Amanda Waldrup, and shared a bit of their past and let us know what they are expecting in the future. Congratulations to all the members of Pelham High School’s graduating Class of 2011. We wish you all the best in the years and decades to come!

Graham Reilly, son of Norm & Leslie Reilly. Graham’s favorite memory is from basketball. His junior year they swept their rival, Thompson, for the first time in about a decade. His favorite teacher is Ms. Ellis. The greatest influence in his life is his grandmother, Polly. “Nothing brings her down or keeps her from smiling. The older she gets, the more she keeps going and going. It’s absolutely astonishing.” After high school, Graham plans to attend Louisiana State University and major in Sports Marketing.

Emily Vonbartheld, daughter of Jennifer and Adam Vonbartheld. Emily’s favorite memories of PHS involve meeting all the wonderful friends she has made and pursuing her passion for art. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Harrison, the art teacher. The greatest influence in her life is a close call between her sister, “who has always been one step ahead to let her know what’s behind,” and her teachers who have guided her to the point she finds herself now. Emily’s future plans are to attend Jefferson State Community college next year.

Elizabeth Rodriguez Roman, daughter of Jose Luis Rodriguez and Mercedes Roman. Her favorite memory is of the tremendous help she received from the ESL Department. Her arrival here was a radical change; she didn’t know much English, and didn’t know anyone. However, she is grateful to God that at PHS there are great people who helped her to feel comfortable in this country—“thank you Ms. Allen!” Her favorite teacher is Mr. Dye, her English teacher, because he encouraged her to learn and be better with love, humor, and little sticky notes (which she cherishes). God and her parents have been the biggest influence on her life, because God has been her strength, and shows her the purpose of her life. She says her parents are the best blessing she has; thanks to them, she is who she is. She plans to study medicine and specialize in becoming a gynecologist to help many women. She sees herself in 20 years as working at a hospital and helping many people, having a wonderful family, and helping her parents.

Brian Hester, son of L.T. and Cathy Hester. His favorite memory of PHS involves Josh Wheeler going in the back door of Coldstone after their AP Psychology practice test, the day it snowed, when a certain friend hit a faculty member in the face with a snowball, 4th period of his Junior year, and Jim Flanihen. His favorite teacher is Mr. Jackson, AP Physics. The greatest influence on his life is his grandfather. He thinks he is more like his grandfather than anyone else in his family. He loves to talk about politics, religion, and current events with him. His future plans are to achieve a double major in Computer Science and Philosophy at UAB. Afterwards, he is considering going to graduate school at Cornell, MIT, or Duke for Computer Science. He sees himself in 20 years working as a computer programmer, preferably for a company like Google, Microsoft, or Valve. He would also like to be married with children by then. If he has time in the future, he may be a part-time professor at a prestigious university.

Bridget Carlile, daughter of Ron & Nancy Carlile. Her favorite memories of PHS are of taking French I, II, III, & IV with her friends— especially the days when they ate French Food. Her favorite PHS teacher is Mrs. Burnett. The greatest influence on her life is her huge family. She is one of six children. Her future plans are to attend Samford University and major in English with a minor in either French or Communications. She sees herself in twenty years as an editor-in-chief of Random House’s Children’s department & married with children.

Davis Faught, son of Lynn Faught and the late William David Faught. His favorite memories of PHS are of playing in football games on Friday nights and the experience of pep rallies. His favorite teacher is Coach Schrupp from Honors History. The greatest influence on his life is his mom, as his family has endured challenging times. Over the years, she has taught him to persevere in doing the right thing and has encouraged him to work hard. He plans on attending Auburn University in the fall majoring in Business Administration and also acquiring an MBA. He sees himself 20 years from now as having a family with a great job he enjoys. icensed Massage Therapist (LMT) Valerie Wilson opened One Touch Massage Therapy Clinic (OTMTC) in Pelham a little over four years ago. With therapeutic massage techniques specifically designed for treatment of chronic pain, stress, and sports-related injuries and strains, Valerie’s healing touch is what has led to the clinic’s phenomenal success. With physical and mental benefits, massage therapy can contribute to an individual’s overall well-being. For those who are skeptical of massage therapy, Valerie, with over seven years experience as a massage therapist, says, “One of the most rewarding things is seeing the skeptics turned into believers.” OTMTC is now offering a way to look years younger naturally with the Bellanina Facelift Massage. Creating Beauty with Healing Hands through a proven technique used for over 20 years, with benefits including: restored muscle tone and elasticity; improved lymph drainage; and a beautiful glow through enhanced blood and oxygen flow. Valerie, also a minister, is married to Nicholas Wilson. They have two sons: Nate, 13, and Jacoby, 8. The Wilsons are expecting another addition to their family in late-November. FM 97.7 The Peach Rocks Pelham

T

he Reynolds family has always been in the radio industry. “I ran an AM station out of a shed in Luverne with Lyle when I was fourteen-years-old,” said Cameron Reynolds. Family-owned and operated, WHPH 97.7 The Peach moved to Pelham from Clanton early this year, in order to expand its broadcast range. As they settle into their new town and studio, reaching more of central Alabama than ever before, the Reynolds look forward to making sure The Peach becomes a valuable member of the local community; and not just our source for the super hits of the 60s and 70s. Owner Paul Reynolds began working in radio while he was in college at the University of Alabama; and at 69 years old today, his son says he has no intention of leaving his lifelong passion for retirement anytime soon. “He’s the end all be all,” said Cameron. “He’s forgotten more about radio than I’ll ever know.” With Paul’s expertise running the show, the rest of the Reynolds family follow his lead, playing their own various roles at the station. Paul’s wife Joan and youngest son Cameron “wear many hats” around the office, dealing with just about anything that comes up. Cameron says that his oldest brother, Lee, is the “resident genius,” heading up the engineering department. While his other brother Lyle actually lives in Huntsville, he still has a major role in the family business as the manager of The Peach’s sister sports station, 97.7 The Zone. Even the family’s Boston terrier, Rebel, gets in on the action, greeting visitors in the studio lobby. While The Peach may still be new to the community, they have not wasted any time giving back to it. After the destructive storms that swept through the state last month, the station became an official drop point for donated goods. They worked with two local Walmart stores to collect supplies for tornado victims. As part of the station’s relief efforts, The Peach team also worked with NBC 13’s telethon which raised over $700,000 and filled five trucks with food to help those harmed by the storms.

Meet Your Neighbor…Bob Berguson, an award-winning artist, calls Pelham home

H

e calls his art “Bergo Marks” which he refers to as his own language. His paintings typically include numbering, stenciling and writing that collide to form abstract calligraphy. It requires rhythm and placement, he says, and he has to get the rhythm just right. Professor Emeritus Robert J. “Bob” Berguson retired from the School of Art at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana, in 2007. He was a professor of art at the school where he taught for 37 years. He and his wife, Marj, moved to Alabama in 2010 to be near their grown sons and grandchildren. The couple lives in the Strathaven community of Ballantrae. “My painting style has always been linear in nature and energetic, a general expression of my personality,” writes Berguson in a statement describing his work. Originally from Blossburg, Pennsylvania., Bob earned three degrees in art, including a bachelor of arts, master of arts and master of fine arts, from the University of Iowa. His professional career includes 27 solo exhibitions, 55 invitational exhibitions, and 110 state, regional, national, and international exhibitions. His 16 awards to date include a drawing that toured the U.S. for two years under the auspices of the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service as well as three drawings selected for the World’s Fair in New Orleans. Currently a working artist, Bob says he misses teaching. “I loved interacting with the kids,” he says. While a teacher at Louisiana Tech, he served as interim head of art, head of studio, and undergraduate coordinator. He taught art in the university’s program in Mexico and Rome. He also served on the athletic council for 22 years. “I wanted to be a football player,” Bob says when asked if he always wanted to be an art teacher. The retired teacher is now a working artist. He says he attempts to get in 2-3 hours per day in his home studio. Much of his work is shown in a private gallery in New Orleans where he has sold a number of paintings. Bob’s painting is not main stream and deals with painting as a physical object, writes his former colleague and Louisiana Tech associate professor of art Marie Bukowski. To

create a painting, Bob says he usually starts upside down and backwards with a written mark. Sometimes he uses a thin, skinny brush, and other times he uses an etching tool to scratch marks on small Masonite panel boards. To gain inspiration and set his mood, he relies on musical sounds, including recordings of Asian throat singers. “I listen to this weird music from the country of Tuva,” says Bob. I can only listen to this music while I’m painting, not drawing. I can’t listen to it any other time.” Sitting and hanging in his studio is a unique collection of chimes, bells, drums, a small gong, and other nontraditional musical instruments. He even has a didgeridoo, which is a musical instrument of Australian Aborigines made from a long wooden tube that his wife ordered as a Christmas gift. Bob is intrigued by the low drone created by blowing into the instrument. When not at work in his art studio, Bob can be found in Zumba class, along with his wife, at the Alabaster YMCA 3-4 times per week. Occasionally, they go to the Pelham YMCA on Saturday, too. Bob says he is one of only a few men in the class. “I always liked playing sports,” says Bob. “Zumba is like racquetball or any other similar sport because you can play as hard as you want and exert any amount of effort. It makes me feel as if I am competing with myself.” o At 66, Bob says he would still like to make it as an artist someday, “I still have a dream,” he concludes.

ASO first violinist Sarah Nordlund has ties to PHS

S

arah Nordlund graduated from Pelham High School at just 15-years-old, just after her freshman year. She was accepted to the University of Alabama’s school of music and computer-based honors before she even applied. Finishing her undergrad at only 19, she completed her masters in music at the age of 21. It’s safe to say Sarah Nordlund has a gift. After leaving home, Sarah looked out at the wide open world and saw it as her oyster. She wanted to play music and travel the globe. While completing her masters in violin performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music in Ohio, Sarah thought about her next move. “My mom’s family is from Hong Kong,” she said. “I wanted to get to know them and I wanted to live somewhere outside the U.S. for a little while.” It was a perfect plan. Unfortunately though, there were no openings to play with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO). The following spring, Sarah happened upon a bulletin board on campus, filled with ads and posters, one of which just happened to advertise a U.S. audition tour for the HKPO.

“I went to Chicago to audition, but since it was a tour, I didn’t find out whether I got a part until later that summer,” she said. By then, Sarah had already taken a summer seat with the National Repertory Orchestra in Colorado. During the session, she received the call she had hoped for—she was offered a

one year position to play with the HKPO. After her first year in Hong Kong, the young virtuoso was pleased to accept a seat for a second year. “I moved to New York City to do some different things,” said Sarah. Instead of playing with a major orchestra, that fall Sarah got into teaching music with a program called Opus 118 at the Harlem School of Music. “Teaching kids in a public school setting is very interesting,” she said. Although she enjoyed it thoroughly, she was interested in branching out a bit, so she spent the following spring in Florida playing with the Sarasota Opera. “Being in Florida made me remember what it was like to sleep well,” she said. The slower lifestyle of home crept back into her mind, reminding her that she did not want to try to settle down in a major metropolis like the Big Apple. While house-sitting for her parents back home in the Indian Springs area in August 2007, Sarah noticed that the Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO) was holding auditions. She tried out and quickly received a year seat playing violin with the ASO. After just a couple of months, Sarah realized just how happy she was to be doing what she loved AND being at home. Sarah worked hard to keep her seat with her hometown orchestra, and last year it all paid off—Sarah received a permanent job as a violinist for the ASO. Although she has a full-time symphony job, she has also continued to teach music to children at Dawson Music Academy. “I like being able to do both,” she said. “Performing and teaching have come together here, where everywhere else I did one or the other.” For fun, Sarah and her musical friends get together and play the music they love at small venues around town. Many of them have even gotten together a small group as a side job— Cahaba River Strings can be booked to play for events. “We do a lot of weddings,” Sarah said. For more information, visit www.CahabaRiverStrings.com. Go to www.AlabamaSymphony.org to see the ASO’s summer concert lineup, and hear former Pelham High student Sarah Nordlund in action!

Pelham City News Summer 2011

elham-based Forte’ Incorporated announces that company founder and president Glenn S. Phillips has authored a new book, Nerd-to-English: Your Everyday Guide to Translating Your Business, Your Messages, and Yourself. Do you ever wonder why your messages get lost? Or why others ignore you? Maybe you know someone that sounds smart but makes little sense to you? Why does this happen? What does it cost you in your career, your business and your life? Whether we admit it or not, we are all a nerd about something. To succeed in business and life, it is critical to understand when your messages are being ignored or lost. Nerd-to-English explores the gaps we all have in our communication with not only each other, but with ourselves. Phillips shares lessons, experiences and insight derived from overcoming personal and financial crisis and discoveries from more than twenty years of business and technology consulting. The book explores the ways we all fool ourselves, how to recognize this behavior, and ways to overcome these challenges to become more effective in sharing our message. Through examples and experiences, Phillips explains that communication is more than avoiding big, unusual words and more than simply talking more. It is about understanding ourselves better first, then learning how to empathize with others. The books is available locally at The Little Professor Book Center in Homewood and available in both print and digital version at online bookstores nerdtoenglish.com, amazon.com and other online retailers.

G

wen Helms, a retired grandmother and great grandmother who lives in the Weybridge section of Stoneykirk in Ballantrae, says she does it all except cut the grass. She plants, fertilizes, and pulls weeds, but she leaves the mowing to her sons. “I like the satisfaction it gives me to make things look better,” says Gwen. “It gives me a good feeling.” Gwen and her late husband moved to Pelham from Pleasant Grove almost six years ago. The colorful flower beds in front of her home include some bright orange Asiac lilies she brought along with her from Pleasant Grove. Besides the splash of color across the front of her lawn, Gwen plants and harvests a bounty of mother nature in her back yard. With her self-taught green thumb, she put in a bed of bunch onions and okra. “It is a thrill to go out every morning and pull the okra,” says Gwen. The patio off the back of Gwen’s house is lined with pots growing a variety of tomatoes and herbs including cherry and Better Boys, chives, dill, and a 6-year-old orange tree. The lush, green tree has grown tall and thick, but has yet to produce an orange, she says. There is also a pot with pieces of a Wandering Jew given to her by her mother-in-law more than 15 years ago. Her screened porch is decorated with pots of basil alongside impatiens. Gwen says this year she decided to try most of her gardening in containers nearer to the house because in years past deer and rabbits ate them. Over the years, Gwen has learned a lot about gardening, mostly through practice, because it makes her feel good. “I know Heaven’s going to be perfect, but I hope there’s a little patch of weeds for me to pull,” says Gwen.

Penrose was recognized with at the June 3 Board of Education Meeting. Penrose, who previously worked as a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy for three years, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. According to Elementary Coordinator Rickey Darby, he was the unanimous choice of the selection committee. Penrose was described by Principal Dana Payne as a teacher who stands out in all four of the Alabama Quality Instruction Standards, but particularly in standard two which deals with teaching and learning. Mrs. Payne said he sets a positive role model for his students and fosters learner participation by creating and maintaining a respectful climate in his classroom. He was also praised for having effective communication skills, for being a team-player, and for having a tremendous impact on his student’s lives – including some who previously had behavior issues, but now were thriving in school due to his influence. “Christopher Penrose has many attributes that make him an outstanding teacher, but more than anything, he has a heart for children,” she wrote. “What stands out with Chris is that he sends the message to all students that he cares about them as children before he teaches them as students. The saying that is often quoted, ‘Kids don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care,’ should be posted on Mr. Penrose’s back because that is exactly how he lives every day!”

Penrose wrote that his greatest surprise—that affected his performance as a first year teacher— was the connection he felt to his students. “I am not simply a teacher to my kids. I am a part of them, and they are a part of me: a massive part,” he wrote. “In college I was taught to expect the unexpected. Whether it is a tornado drill, an assembly, or a nose bleed, each day has some kind of exciting challenge. ‘There is no such thing as a normal day in school’ – a professor might say. What I didn’t expect or learn in college, though, was that a piece of me would go home with 28 different kids each day, and in turn, I would take home a limitless collection of incredible moments and memories.” His advice to other first year teachers was to be prepared for the stress and headaches that come with a first-year teaching job, but to never stop giving to the students. “Love ‘em. Love ‘em until it hurts,” Penrose wrote. “And when it finally hurts, keep on loving them, because one of them, maybe more than one, is going to need all the love you can muster. It’s a fact that there are going to be a few rough days where you might feel like calling it quits, but there are going to be countless days when you can’t wait for that morning bell to ring just so that you can see your student’s faces. It’s those days that make it worthwhile. You’ll experience more excitement, frustration, and passion than most people experience in a lifetime. So, be prepared.” Congratulations Christopher on an incredible honor in your first year!

Birmingham Zoo Creates A More “Hands-On” Environment

I

f you haven’t been to the zoo lately, you haven’t been to the zoo! Thanks to investments in expansion and more hands-on activities for children, the Birmingham Zoo has had a renaissance of family-friendly fun.

The Birmingham Zoo’s brand new addition is their Trails Of Africa exhibit. The zoo recently acquired an African bull elephant with an additional one on the way. They also have made vast improvements with their elephant exhibit, enlarging their pen and creating a more accurate habitat that allows them to roam free in a familiar environment.

Another new addition is the Birmingham Zoo’s Lorikeet Aviary. When you first walk in, you are greeted by a friendly employee at the Lorikeet gift shop, with cups of nectar and various souvenirs you can buy. You then enter a room full of vibrant birds (both in color and personality) that will happily greet you as their new perch. They particularly swarm those with nectar! Other activities and exhibits include the predator zone, camel rides, various daily animal feedings, a Sea Lion splash show, railroad rides, and the Butterfly Encounter exhibit which opened April 30th. For more information, visit BirminghamZoo.com.

K

atie Boyd had just finished a two and a half hour field day when we sat down to talk. Like many of the school’s events, Katie organized and oversaw it. A few things readily apparent: this teacher has an unassuming personality and a laid-back demeanor. This was our first meeting, but I already felt I was beginning to understand why she had been named Teacher of the Year at the Linda Nolen Learning Center (LNLC). Originally from Tallapoosa County, Katie has been the Adaptive PE teacher at LNLC for five years now. She works with students aged five to twenty-one, each one possessing emotional, physical, and/or mental disabilities. As we talk about her time at LNLC she laughs and says, “I’ve seen it all,” then shares a recent story illustrating her point. Suffice it to say that she once had to chase a student who had run off into the woods. She is quick to admit that her job requires a lot of patience, but with unique challenges come special rewards. The things we take for granted, such as shooting a basketball, are the tiny victories that keep Katie going. Tears seemed to fill her eyes as she talked about a former student with physical disabilities. She recalls how her 20-year-old student learned, for the first time, to lift her arms on her own. It’s obvious that Katie treasures and savors these little victories as much as her students. “These kids are a part of society,” Katie asserts. It’s that sentiment that compels her to take her students out into the community as much as possible. Posted to her office door is a calendar crammed with events. Among them are zoo visits and weekly swimming trips. She has also arranged for horses and inflatables to be brought to the school. Also scheduled is a wheelchair wash. Just like a carwash, except for the wheelchair-bound students. I asked Katie how it felt to be named teacher of the year. She was silent for a moment, and then she grinned, shrugged her shoulders, and said plainly, “It’s my job.” Then, with a laugh, added that she is enjoying her new parking spot. In the future Katie hopes to pursue her doctorate, but has no intentions of leaving LNLC. “I have the greatest administration.” They support her “crazy ideas,” as she puts it. “I’m in a great place. I couldn’t see myself being anymore successful than I am here.” Congratulations, Katie, on being selected LNLC Teacher of the Year!
