Essential Tax Tips You Can Use NOW! As 2012 rolls to an end, there are some very important tax matters that will affect every one of us over the next few months. The Bush-era tax cuts are set to expire, and tax rates are set to rise to pre-2010 levels. No one, not even members of Congress, knows what is going to happen. With that in mind, here are some highlights of the things that could affect you!

Our water and sewer treatment facilities must meet all State ADEM and Federal EPA regulations and guidelines, and we must and will stay in compliance.

• Capital Gain Rate of zero percent for certain tax payers with a maximum rate of 15% will expired on 12/31 • Income tax brackets currently start at 10% with a max of 35%. This will change to 15% with a max of 39% • Dependent Care credit limit drops to $2,400 for one qualifying child, and $4,800 for two. • Medical expense deductions are 7.5% of AGI this year, but in 2013 increase to 10% of AGI. • A .9 percent tax is applicable to self-employed individuals or employee wages in excess of $200,000 ($250,000 if filing jointly) effective Jan. 1, 2013 • For 2013, a 3.8% surtax on investment income for married couples with AGI of more than $250,000. If all of this talk of the “Fiscal Cliff” is too confusing, please give us a call to schedule a complimentary appointment to review your tax situation.

2 Holiday 2012 / www.CityOfHelena.org

Greetings from city hall and Happy Holidays to all! I am proud and humbled to assume the Office of Mayor and would like to thank everyone for your support and well wishes as we enter a new chapter in Helena’s rich history. I, along with your new city council, have already been hard at work to continue making Helena a great place to live, shop, worship and play. As your Mayor, I will put in the time and effort that it takes to sustain and improve public works, public safety, and also our city parks and recreation facilities. Our citizens demand professional services and our employees deserve the best equipment, technology, and resources to see that it happens. I am committed to making sure this goal is achieved and maintained. I will pursue state and federal funding to help fund road projects. I re-

As we move to a new budget year, the expenditure of taxpayers’ funds will be reviewed and scrutinized. Cost savings initiatives will be implemented immediately. We will provide our citizens with accountability of the use of all funds. A new spirit of cooperation and teamwork now exists with our council members. This will insure that we meet the needs of the people of Helena in an efficient and professional manner. I will leave you with this thought, Change is never easy, but change is necessary for progress, growth and prosperity to continue to evolve. Please have a safe and happy holiday season and may God bless you, your family and the City of Helena. Best Wishes,

Mark R. Hall

New Mayor and City Council seated in ceremony November 5 Judge Bill Bostick swore in new Helena Mayor Mark Hall and city council members Monday, November 5, at Helena City Hall. The 2012-16 Council President is Cris Nelson with Leigh Hulsey elected as President Pro-tem. Amanda Traywick was reappointed as Helena City Clerk. Each of the newly elected council members in turn thanked their families, friends and those who voted for them. Councilman Mike Jones said, “Along with Mayor Hall, I think we are going to do a lot in a short amount of time, and we have a big agenda already. We’re going to work hard for you.” Council President Cris Nelson said, “We have a very good group of people, and I think you’re going to be very proud of what we will accomplish over the next four years. If you have

a problem with anything, we are all accountable to you and want to hear from you. We are excited about the opportunities that are available and look forward to the next four years.” Mayor Hall said, “Change is necessary. Change with us as we grow; evolve and prosper. Change with us, join us to be the best and to be one. Thank you very much, and God bless all of you.” Hall was also appointed president of the utility board. As such, he will return the salary that goes with the mayor’s position to the city’s general fund. The city budget is under review, and interested residents are always invited to attend council meetings to see how our tax dollars work. “The city has several accounts. It is going to take a lot of effort to review all of them,” said city councilman Hal Woodman. Good luck and best wishes to all!

Resident sings praises of local Eye Doctor, Paul Schifanella We had a lady call us a few week back raving about the care she received at a local eye doctor. “Dr. Schifanella is just the best,” she said. “Would you publish a letter if I sent it to you?” asked Helen Phipps. We are happy to pass along her recommendation to you at this time… My physical condition has made it necessary for me to find local doctors. As a result, I made an eye appointment with Dr. Paul Schifanella at Family Eye Care Center on Highway 17 for an exam. I had what I think was the most thorough eye exam I have ever had, and I have had many. It was a real relief to know that this kind of expertise and professionalism can be found right here in Helena. Dr.Schifinella took his time to make sure my new prescription would make me see as clearly as possible.

Sincerely,

Helen B. Phipps

The Cahaba Cuties Baton Twirlers win Grand Championship

The Cahaba Cuties competition team just competed in its first baton competition, the Twirltacular Grand Championship, held recently in Liberty Park. They were one of 45 teams that competed, representing twirlers from five states. Cahaba Cuties entered two categories and placed in the top two in both. They won 1st place Grand champions in Junior Half-time performance, and they took 2nd place in Junior Dance Twirl. These girls worked hard and represented Helena well with a 1st and 2nd place finish in the two categories they entered, beating other twirlers from around the southeast. Congratulations to The Cahaba Cuties owner and coach, Kelly Hauck, and her Cahaba Cuties competition team.

Snap’s Personal Training Gets Helena’s Coats Family Ready for an Injury Free Ski Holiday in Breckenridge, Colorado Bobby and Wendy Coats say they have exercised regularly since they married 21 years ago, and that Snap Fitness in Helena is their gym of choice. “Snap is very convenient being right here in Helena,” said Bobby, “and with me being a salesman who works odd hours at times, it’s great to know that I have access to their well-equipped facility 24/7/365.” Members at Snap get their own key and can work out whenever they want to. “Their prices are very reasonable too,” said Wendy, “and my daughter, Ashlyn, just loves their Zumba classes.” Ashlyn and her brother, Chris, both attend Pelham High School where Chris, a senior, played defensive end for the Pelham Panthers this past season. Bobby and Wendy credit Snap Trainer Jackie Droxler with keeping them both motivated. “Jackie created a workout routine for my wife, Wendy, that she really enjoys, and when we began planning

a ski vacation, he found a workout that was designed to help us get the most out of our trip. You wouldn’t believe the difference it made!” said Bobby. “Snap is a lot like Cheers, the bar from the old TV show, where everybody knows your name,” said Wendy. And they keep you accountable, but in a nice way. If you miss a few days, they know it and ask where you’ve been. City loses a good friend in Joel Bearden Joel Bearden, who was unopposed for the District 5 Shelby Co Commissioner’s seat, died at home Thursday, November 8, 2012, at the age of 81. Joel had served on the commission since the early 1990s. A loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was an elder at the Pelham Church of Christ. He is remembered as a dear friend to Helena and Pelham, and was one of the finest humorists one could hope to hear. Anybody who attended an event where Joel was speaking would end up in stitches at the home spun, clean humor he took from everyday life in small town Alabama. It nearly always involved his beloved wife, Peggy. Joel was a man of high morals and a staunch Auburn fan, having graduated from there in 1952. He always considered himself a farmer, and was born and raised on Bearden Farms in Helena. Joel always had a smile on his face and a kind word for everybody with which he came into contact. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Peggy Bearden, his daughter, Jan Bearden Peoples and his brother Leonard Bearden. He is survived by his three daughters, Mickey Finn, Kim Bearden Dudley and Staci Ballard (Royce); 11 grandchildren, Shannon, Lee, Eric, Michelle, Mindy, Cody, Katie, Alex, Cory, Kyle and Reid, 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, Kathleen Perkins, Frances Lewis and Shirley Genry, brother, Ralph Bearden; a number of nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Laid to rest Monday, November 12, Joel Bearden’s presence will be missed far beyond the borders of Shelby County.

three areas in the state open to hunting.” Zach was one of the lucky ones—he purchased just one ticket for the hunt. “As a lifelong hunter, outdoorsman and conservationist, it was my boyhood dream to hunt this prehistoric beast.” Be sure you go on our blog to read the entire story of Zach’s hunt! He finishes his gator story with the following: “With the boat on its trailer, we drew a small crowd as we secured everything for travel. Less fortunate hunters were eager to hear our story and congratulate us on our success. The final measurement showed that we had captured an 8' 5," 104 pound male. This once in a lifetime opportunity fulfilled my boyhood dreams.”

Zach Gerber had an adventure in recently at the Eufaula alligator hunt. Zach and his hunting mates harvested a big gator, and you can tell from his first hand account of the hunt how excited he really was. We do not have the space in this edition to publish the entire story, but go onto our blog to read it! (www.helenacitynews.blogspot.com) Scroll until you find it. If you get to the bottom, click for older posts. Here is just a little bit of Zach’s story. “Being born and spending nearly 16 years in Louisiana, I watched the American alligator go from being on the endangered species list to a current population in the millions. With no natural predators, states from Texas to South Carolina have opened a hunting season to keep the population at a healthy number and control nuisance gators,” said Zach. “Over 3,000 hunters bought more than 10,000 lottery tickets at $6 each to obtain one of 295 tags randomly drawn by computer for

Mock Election at Helena Intermediate School gives lesson in citizenship

Students at Helena Intermediate School participated in a Mock Election Tuesday, November 6, to cast their vote for President of the United States. To make the experience as close to the real thing as possible, members of the student council served as poll workers. Each student was required to verify with the poll workers that their name was on the voter registration list. Students then took a ballot to a voting table, complete with privacy dividers so they could secretly mark their ballot, before placing their ballots in the ballot box. Students even received an “I voted” sticker before returning to class. “The mock election was a tremendous experience for our students,” according to HIS Principal Dr. Wayne Williams. “I had so many parents tell me that their kids were so excited—and informed—

about the election process as a result of the mock election.” “We had students discussing the number of electoral votes that belonged to each state and how their candidate could win,” added Dr. Williams. “It was tremendous!” Dr. Williams expressed a special word of appreciation to the teachers who planned and organized the event, third grade teachers, Kathy Blackmon and Nancy McCoy, and student council sponsors, Michelle Saindon and Leslie Crowe. The HIS mock election was won by Gov. Mitt Romney who received 642 votes compared to 193 for President Barack Obama. But the real winners were the students who received real life lessons in responsible citizenship.

Local author, Hal Caplan, and his family, residents of Helena for 11 years, said recently, “We absolutely love it here. The ‘small town feel with a punch’ is how I usually describe it. We were originally drawn to Helena because it was off the beaten path, but close to everything—the small town atmosphere, the community offerings and the town history.” “My wife Gina and I have one son, Evan, who is 9-years-old. He started in Helena schools in 5-year-old kindergarten and is currently in 4th grade at Helena Intermediate. He loved it from the getgo. He knows so many people, and it’s funny to share that I am now known as ‘Evan’s dad.’” Hal says its because of the many activities Evan is involved with that he and Gina have made many friends within the community, which he said is another reason they love Helena so much. “As Evan has grown, he has taught me many lessons along the way. These lessons are what I consider ‘life’s lessons through the eyes of a child.’ In general, as parents, we teach our children right from wrong, good from bad, and so on; but

who really is the teacher, the adult or the child? Children are innocent—they don’t judge—and they are generally excited about what tomorrow may bring. As adults faced with life’s challenges, most of us have lost sight of the lessons we were taught as children.” Hal has written a book which is a collection of these lessons learned. “The book has made it into the libraries of five elementary schools in Troy, as well as one book that was sold and sent to New Zealand. That was exciting,” he said. “The book is titled, Teachings from a Child—A youngster’s Perspective on Life’s Lessons. It’s available through www.amazon.com, but there’s other ways to get a copy of it. You can go directly to my website, halcaplan.com and select the ‘Order a Book’ link. Another option is to contact me directly for a signed copy of the book (from Evan of course), and if you would like me to sign it as well, I can certainly do that. You can contact me directly at halcaplan@rocketmail.com or call (205) 603-9139. “I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it,” said Hal.

Pelham High Wind Ensemble Selected to play at AMEA Convention Music educators from across Alabama will join together January 10, 2013, at 2:40 p.m. at the AMEA convention in Montgomery, and the Pelham High Wind Ensemble will have the privilege of performing for this group of teachers. The Wind Ensemble was selected from many groups who applied to perform for this prestigious event. Jeff Burnside, band director, submitted a performance application that included recordings from the past two years, pictures along with the band and band director’s resumes, and PHS was selected. There are limited groups each year who have this chance to perform. Working towards the AMEA program gives students an extra goal to work for and provides a great deal of exposure for the program. “The caliber of performance expected is much greater than that

expected at a normal festival or concert. The band is working on music ranging from several “band classics” from the turn of the 20th century to music just written and released. Their goal is to perform a difficult, yet “fun” program that the audience remembers after the concert is over. “I guess you could say we want ours to be THE concert remembered from the entire conference,” said Mr. Burnside. “This is one of the best events we can be invited to attend to showcase the talents and hard work of our students, because most in the crowd are music educators. Leaving them impressed after the concert is a tough thing to do which makes the preparations even more fun for us,” added Mr. Burnside. Congratulations to the PHS Wind Ensemble for this honor, and good luck on your performance!

Helena’s Ms. Clara Waldrop Celebrates 100th Birthday Friends and family of Clara Bell Waldrop gathered at a local restaurant recently where a festive pink wreath on the front door announced her 100th birthday. The luncheon was held on the Wednesday before her birthday since the restaurant’s special of the day—chicken and dumplings—is Clara’s favorite. Clara was born September 30, 1912, in West Blockton, Alabama, and is the oldest of four girls and five boys. Her one surviving sister, Bessie Mae Matthews, 89, lives in Auburn. As to memories, she has more than a few. “As a small child, I can remember Mama chasing quail and catching them for my Daddy’s lunch,” Clara says. “Daddy was a barber in Bessemer and I would get to go with him to work once in a while and have breakfast at the Bright Star.” “I don’t remember much about the Depression. We all worked in Mama’s garden, so we always had plenty to eat. I learned how to drive in my brother George’s ‘cut down’,” she reminisces. “After finishing school at McAdory,

my first job was at Kress & Company (for readers born after the late 1960s, a chain of five and dime stores) working at the handkerchief and lace counter. In those days, you had to be single to work, and you couldn’t talk to customers unless it was work related.” “My future husband, Woodrow (Woody) Waldrop of Bessemer, would come in the store and purchase handkerchiefs from me daily. By the time we married in 1933, he had over 100 handkerchiefs! After our marriage, I had to say goodbye to Kress. However, when I returned briefly to fill in for an ailing coworker, I was asked to not wear my wedding band while working.” She recalls, “During World War II, Woody worked at Ziegler as a butcher, and I busied myself with work and children. Later he went to work for US Steel.” Clara and Woody had three children; two were born at home. Daughterin-law Georgie Waldrop says there are 16 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren from the union. (Many

students from Helena will remember Miss Georgie was a bus driver who transported them to Riverchase Middle School before Helena had one.) Clara later worked for “Ma Bell” on the switchboards at what is now the AT&T Bessemer branch. She eventually transferred to Birmingham, retiring from AT&T in 1968. “My favorite hobbies were dancing, swimming, parties with the family and travel.” Clara traveled to Germany and spent 45 days there with her son, Woody, and his wife, Georgie, when her grandson, Kelly Glenn was born in 1975. She traveled throughout Europe that year and returned the next year to see England. She has also been to Hawaii and made numerous trips to Las Vegas. Clara says her biggest joy at reaching 100 is her family, and that she has enjoyed a long retirement. “If I had it all to do over I would change one thing,” Clara says. “I’d write everything down in a diary. I’ve forgotten so much.” Clara, we beg to differ, it sounds like you remember quite a lot!

In our last issue, an article about NBC13’s Sports Director Don Hawes, our writer gave Don’s wife a new name. Don’s lovely wife, Stacey, is a native of Satsuma, Alabama and an active member of our community. She selflessly volunteers her time as the coach/sponsor of her daughter’s Helena Wildcats cheerleading squad. Please pardon the error. And Pelham High School’s Athletic Director, Kim Keil, is the director of ALL athletic programs for both boys and girls at the school. Please excuse the error.

We’d like you to meet Helena resident and Elephant Trainer Jason Miles What weighs 11,000 pounds, stands eleven-feet-tall and eats 200 pounds of food every day? Helena resident Jason Miles knows the answer to this! That would be Bulwagi, the African bull elephant at the Birmingham Zoo in the Trails of Africa exhibit. Bulwagi came here from Disney’s Animal Kingdom. African elephants can be distinguished from Asian elephants by their ears which look like the continent of Africa. A closer look shows that their trunks have two little ‘finger-like’ appendages that can pick up a single blade of grass. The male comrades of Bulwagi are 12-year-old Callee and Ajani, typical teenagers who like to roughhouse with one another. Tamani, at age 7, is like a energetic kid—into everything. Each day, elephant keeper/trainer Jason Miles sees that the members of this bachelor herd are well-nourished with hay and supplemental grain. During training time, he also rewards them with sweet potatoes, apples and melons. Miles and his wife, Stephanie, moved here from a small Illinois town seven years ago when he learned of a job at the zoo via a cousin who already lived in Helena. He had long been interested in working with

Sunny

Cleaners

animals and siezed the opportunity. “Working at a zoo is not just playing with animals all day,” he points out. He began as a bird keeper and then switched to the predator department for five years. When he learned of the Trails of Africa exhibit opening spring 2011, he knew that would be his next challenge of choice. “What is unique about the Birmingham Zoo is that ours is the only elephant program in the country that has a bachelor herd of African male elephants.” “Within the elephant community, we are getting better at reproduction, but there is a surplus of male elephants that we don’t know what to do with—many zoos are not equipped to house more than one bull.” The male offspring are rejected from the more social, touching, talking female herd between ages 6 to 9. Males are less social and more independent in their interactions. “Our blueprint here is about the management style for a bachelor elephant herd and what zoos can do about the male overpopulation.” Each morning, the two elephant We Clean Suede, Leather and Draperies, too!

Helena resident Jason Miles and Tamani, one of four African Bull Elephants at the Birmingham Zoo’s Trail of Africa exhibit.

keepers bring out the four males. They approach by going up and leaning into the elephant. “We have them pick up their back and front feet. We monitor their reactions. We take them through stretches.” “The elephant’s attitudes change daily—even hourly,” Miles says. “You have to have a purpose and game plan. If the handler is not confident, the elephant won’t obey.” “The younger elephants move faster, so you have to think ahead. There must

always be a Plan B or a Plan C.” “Even after they learn what is expected of their basic routine, they are always coming up with something new to throw you off,” he said. Jason’s wife, Stephanie, also works at the zoo in administration. They are the parents of Aylish, age 6, and Isaac, 2. When you visit the Birmingham Zoo, plan to see Jason at the Elephant Lecture & Training Demo at 11:00 a.m. when he speaks about this unique elephant conservation program.

Immigrant

or Native?

Traci Crenshaw & Melissa Johnson It’s not about your home country but rather your view of technology. Those born after 1980 are digital natives; those born before that date are considered digital immigrants. Older generations are constantly being told the need to learn about the newest and greatest technological advance. Our children however are simply adjusting to the advancements. This is what makes them natives, their perspective on the subject. Ringing phones…beeping texts…status updates…latest tweets, this is all they have known. Marc Prensky reports that “today’s average college grads have spent less than 5,000 hours of their lives reading, but over 10,000 hours playing video games (not to mention 20,000 hours watching TV). Computer games, email, the Internet, cell phones and instant messaging are integral parts of their lives.” Everyday these forms of communication demand our attention. From the moment we wake up until the moment we go to sleep, many of us are connecting in some way to others in our community

and around the world. However, most of this communication is not taking place face-to-face. Instead we are tied to our cell phones and computers in order to send and receive messages. Although this is the age of technology, are we missing something important here? As we move from one generation to the next, the world is constantly changing. It is important to adapt to these changes but is also essential that we don’t leave the positive attributes of the past. So, although communication has become more immediate and global, we don’t want to miss the benefits of being physically connected with our speaking audience. In a world where the latest text or podcast is what we pay attention to, it is easy to stay isolated and confused, rather than connected. This is because in many situations, we don’t truly know our audience or take the time to tailor our messages to them. For example, if I send out a tweet and I have over 1000 followers on Twitter, my message tends to be generic. The receiver does not see my body language, hear the tone of my voice, or understand the context in which I am speaking. Instead, they are left to interpret and create these things for themselves. As a result, many of these messages are interpreted incorrectly and lose their full value.

There is a common saying that goes, “it is not what you say but how you say it.” With digital communication, occasionally, the “how” gets lost in translation. Face-to-face communication has many benefits. The major benefit is that it is a combination of verbal and non-verbal delivery. Not only do we hear the words that a person says in this context, but we can read between the lines by paying attention to the communicator’s facial expression, eye contact, gestures and tone of voice. This can play a significant role in our interpretation of the message. For example, if I have an issue at work or school and I send an email to my teacher or boss, they may misinterpret my message which could significantly impact me. However, if I take the time to talk to them face-to-face, we have the option of both speaking and then listening and responding to the feedback we receive from them. This can dispel any misconceptions before they take root. Our children can teach us about technology but we, the older generation, need to teach them the importance of verbal communication. The majority of today’s jobs require some form of direct customer service. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment within the customer-service profession will grow 15.5 percent be-

tween 2010 and 2020. This is faster than the average for all other occupations. If our children are only comfortable with digital communication devices, how will they ever understand the nature of a first impression? Technology is paramount to our nation, and our lives moving forward. However, let us not forget the importance of a kind word, direct eye contact, the ability to carry on a conversation and a smile. The best option for truly effective communication is to blend face-to-face communication and new technological mediums. Balance is not only the key to a good life but also great communication!

The library received some great news in September. Senator Cam Ward R-Alabaster, who represents our area in Montgomery, has always worked hard to help the Jane B. Holmes Public Library in Helena. Senator Ward has also supported The Shelby County Library System and libraries across Alabama. Senator Ward presented the library with a check for $1500 to help the library obtain a new Self Check-Out machine. The old machine is slowing and in decline, and we are hopeful to have the new one in soon. The library would like to thank Senator Ward for assisting us with this project. The library strives to keep up with the latest technology, and this will help us to reach our many goals in this regard. Please thank Senator Ward for his time and attention to our City and library. The library will have a special visit from Santa Claus on Monday, December 17 at 6:00 PM! Make sure to bring your own camera so that you can take pictures of the jolly old man from the North Pole! Also, the November Book Drive was a Big Success! The library accepts donations year round, but we made a special effort to collect books during November.
