FROM THE MAYOR

I hope this edition of the City News finds you all well! Spring is here, and that opens the door for outdoor events and activities, so I would like to extend a big thanks to all our great volunteers that help in a variety of ways with those activities this time of year. Of special note are groups such as the Beautification Board, who have been busy sprucing up Old Town, while the Youth League Baseball and Softball volunteers put on an incredible opening day ceremony at the Sports Complex where thousands of parents, grandparents and youth league teams gathered to celebrate the start of the season. As we move into spring, we expect to see more great events, such as the annual Easter Egg

hunt for kids at the Amphitheatre and the Buck Creek Festival in Old Town, all put on entirely by a dedicated group of volunteers. And don’t forget the monthly First Fridays in Old Town, the soon-to-return Farmers Market on Saturdays in June, and a variety of other great events like those at the Helena Public Library for children of all ages. In other important news, I am pleased to announce that we have entered an agreement with Blackboard Connect to provide local emergency alerts to our citizens via smart phones, email and land lines at no additional charge to our homeowners! This service will be primarily managed by our public safety officials for critical emergency events and also used to deliver important alerts regarding extended road closures (as we experienced in the recent ice storms) or utility outages

such as a water line break in a particular area. Once the service is installed, there will be a link for sign-up placed on the city website (you are not required to participate, but it is a free service provided by the city to every citizen). Blackboard Connect is a national provider, and UAB and the City of Tuscaloosa are a few of their current customers in our area. After installation and testing, the target date for the service to begin operation is during the month of May. In other news, the Utility Board is in the process of making upgrades and required improvements at our Wastewater Treatment Facility. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management has mandated strict new regulatory requirements for wastewater treatment and we must make improvements to the existing facility to comply. Our engineers will be on hand at City Hall to discuss the improvement project on April 24th at 6 pm.

CLEAN UP & CLEAN OUT DAY SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 2014 • 8:00AM to 12:00PM Get rid of items not normally accepted in garbage pickup!

At the Helena Sports Complex 2 Spring Edition 2014 / www.CityOfHelena.org

Again, these needed upgrades are mandated by ADEM and EPA regulations so we must make needed changes to comply. On a good note, I am very happy to announce that USX has agreed to fully fund a traffic control device (traffic lights) for the intersection of County road 52 and Hillsboro Parkway. This light will be a tremendous help in moving traffic to and from the new Helena High School. Engineers will begin working on the project immediately, but I am told that design, bidding, and obtaining the devices for installation could take up to 6 months to complete. I am grateful to USX for funding this project and County Commissioner Elwyn Bearden who was instrumental in getting the necessary approvals for this important project from the County Highway Department. Don’t forget that we have arranged to have a “Clean up and Clean out” free garbage drop off day at the Sports Complex on April 19th from 8am-12pm. This is just a way for the city to help our homeowners discard unwanted items or junk, in hopes that it saves you time and money with a special day to dispose of those items. We will continue make this an annual free event. Finally, I extend to you my hope that you all have a blessed Easter and a great spring. I hope to see you at all the events and around town! Best Regards,

Mark

Mayor Hall State of City Address Mayor Mark Hall spoke to the Helena Business Association on March 4 about progress and changes in the city since the new administration took office. “We work together to solve problems. I can tell you that we don’t always agree, but we have a spirit of teamwork and camaraderie at city hall and are very blessed for that,” he said. “I feel very good about the direction the city has gone in the last year and a half.” Some of the improvements that have been made include: Improvements and repairs on the baseball fields, soccer field and fences; plus the tennis court has been resurfaced. Refinancing of the Community Center bond issue recouped $200,000. This is currently being reinvested on capital improvements. Sales tax continues to rise; it is a very import revenue source for Helena. Local businesses should be seeing a rise in their revenue. “We are about $250,000 ahead of where we were last year. For us, that amount is

like when they find the BIG nugget on the gold rush show! We will keep digging for bigger nuggets,” commented Hall. “Our expenses are going up, but we try to make good decisions with every penny we spend,” he said. “Home sales are rising now, but we are trying not to rely on that entirely.” “We came into office Karen Miller of the Karen Ross Miller Allstate Insurance Agency, Mayor Mark Hall, knowing that traffic is and Helena Business Association President Bob Van Loan. a horrendous problem cars a day going down Hwy schedule; they still have huge here. Introducing — the Helena Historic Preservation Committee The Helena Historic Preservation Committee is a committee of Helena citizens overseen by Councilman Hal Woodman. The solemn mission of this committee is to preserve, protect, and promote Helena’s history for the education and benefit of our community. They are also currently creating an inventory of historical sites, potential historical sites, and creating family trees both tangible and digital. San Antonio Grill offers family atmosphere, delicious Mexican dishes and personal service When Diana Autry first came to the US from China as an international student studying at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York, she had never even worked in a restaurant. But that soon changed, as she learned how to manage Chinese restaurants to support herself while in school. While she still enjoys dancing, being a restaurateur became her goal, because she enjoyed working in the business. The decision to move was easy, because she had seen how ruthless the restaurant business could be in big cities, and knew there would be more opportunities to thrive in the South. Diana opened her first establishment, Shanghai Chinese Restaurant, in Hueytown in 1994. After several years, she

and her husband, Rusty, sold it to look into opening another restaurant in McCalla. After waiting for a strip mall to open across the street from McAdory High School, they had to put the restaurant plans on hold when Diana became pregnant with their first child, Russ. While pregnant with their second child, Dawn, she learned a Chinese restaurant had already moved into the location they wanted. Only after Rusty asked, “Why not?” did the pair decide to try their hand at making a different type of food: Mexican. In 2003, they opened the first San Antonio Grill. After 3 successful years, they began to look for a suitable second location. “My neighbor told me, ‘Helena is tucked in a beautiful neighborhood,

and it’s one of the fastest growing cities in Shelby County,’ so we brought our efforts here,” Diana explained. During this time, her father died, so she went back to Northern China to settle his affairs. When she came back, she brought her mother, Yan, to help run the Helena restaurant. Yan gave a genuine smile as she said, “I’m thankful to my daughter for giving me a chance to help.” Diana said all the thanks should go to her mother, though. “She is here every day, unless Russ or Dawn have a soccer or softball game,” she

laughs. “And when she isn’t here, the customers ask for her! They say, ‘There is no San Antonio Grill without Yan!’ And they are right.”

Nominated by the community to be incarcerated at First Friday, on March 7, were Mayor Mark Hall, Council President Cris Nelson, Council persons Hal Woodman and Leslie Barlett, Brian Crumpton, Alan Farmer and Bob Van Loan. All collected money for their ‘bail.’ Almost $700 was raised from the Chili Cook Off and the jailbirds to benefit Camp Fire Alabama! Dr. Sarah Wolfe of Wolfe Orthodontics and Amy Webb of Helena Mercantile also participated in the fun events. Spring Edition 2014

HBA partners with Samford MBA students This spring, students from Samford University’s Brock School of Business MBA program will be working with members of the Helena Business Association to explore new ways to market and promote the HBA to prospective new members and add value for current members. Brock School of Business faculty member, Clif Eason, will be guiding the students through their work as a part of Eason’s Marketing Strategy class at Samford. Clif stated, “We are excited about the opportunity to tackle this very compelling, real-world problem. I know that our students and the HBA will both benefit from the project.” This is the second project with Helena ties that the Brock School of Business has worked on recently. Dr. Franz Lohrke, Chair of the Brock School’s Department of Entrepreneurship, Management,

and Marketing Department, recently supervised students as they worked with longtime Helena business METRO Goals to evaluate their social media marketing strategies and tactics. METRO Goals President Ron Jones stated, “The students did a great job analyzing our needs and helping us with some new directions for our marketing efforts. Their work will help give us new ways to reach our customers.” The work with the HBA has the potential to be an ongoing relationship that could produce opportunities for HBA members. Helena businesses belonging to the HBA will have the opportunity to be a part of marketing research studies, strategy development, analysis, and implementation projects, just to name a few of the possible opportunities. The HBA Board met with

both Clif and Associate Dean of the Brock School of Business, Dr. Chad Carson (a Helena resident), in December to outline the project and talk about what is expected to be a long-term partnership. Bob Van Loan, president of the HBA, expressed his organization’s goals for the project by stating, “We are hopeful that the outcomes of this strategic partnership will be threefold: a more robust

and effective HBA; greater visibility for member businesses, particularly among residents of Helena and bordering communities; and stronger ties between the business community and the city government.” He continued, “We are honored to be working with a highly regarded business school such as Brock, and we can’t wait to see what will come out of this relationship.”

Alabama Communities of Excellence — Update Since Helena is one of six Alabama cities chosen to participate in the Community of Excellence program (ACE), the city council and mayor recently received a report and update from local ACE coordinator, Katherine Ennis. The evaluation contained recommendations and considerations to implement in the next 15-20 years. 1. Continue to promote and involve citizen participation. Encourage civic programs and get our young people involved. 2. Develop a plan to address parking problem in Old Town. Continue to encourage shopping in Helena. 3. Update the city’s comprehensive plan and update zoning for subdivisions to meet future goals. Provide for greater citizen participation in the plan update. 4. Develop a formal business and industry visitation program to be more responsive to visiting

businesses and industry. Show support and recognition for existing businesses. (HBA is will likely take on this task.) 5. List Helena’s Industrial Park on the state EDPA database; only one industry is now listed. 6. Consider developing an industrial site and identify a site for developing a business park. Consider options to attract a hotel/motel to the city. Make incentive information available. 7. Continue efforts to address parking and traffic congestion near the new high school. 8. Examine ways to offer support for professional development for teachers, educators and administrators. 9. Promote increased access to health care information. 10. Encourage installation of an ATM in Old Town. 11. Work with the state tourism office to add local hiking and walking trails to the Alabama Trail Guide.

12. Add tours to promote existing special city events. Ennis noted the present administration is already addressing some of these issues, such as added traffic lanes and stoplights. Sondra Dunaway told the council that the 2nd phase will provide an ACE Facilitator to come to the community, further elaborate on the

strategic planning process (and cover components of the comprehensive plan) and enumerate more attainable 5-year goals. Mayor Hall accepted the report and signed onto the next phase of the program, saying, “This is a educational tool for us. It gives us goals to meet, some of which we should have been meeting all along.”

MEMBERSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR SUMMER 2014!!! Gobbler’s Knob Swim & Tennis Club (GKST) was built in 1981 and incorporated as a non-profit for the purpose of establishing a facility for social and recreational activities of members of the corporation. GKST is a member-owned private club with 265 members each holding equal ownership. We have member owners from all surrounding communities. Our seasonal offerings include the pool complex which consists of our main L-shaped pool divided into three sections including water basketball, lap lane swimming for the exercise

enthusiasts and a diving well. The main pool ranges in depth from 2.5 ft for our tiniest of swimmers to 10 ft in depth in the diving area. We also have a wade pool for the six and under set. Our main pool is staffed with professional certified lifeguards. And if the pool is not enough, we also have full court basketball, sand volleyball, tennis courts and a picnic area with grills for our owner members’ use. We sell vending type snack items and beverages but bringing your own eats and cooking dinner on the grills or in the oven is always an option.

20 Spring Edition 2014 / www.CityOfHelena.org

GKST has three lighted tennis courts that are available for year round use. In the fall of 2013 extensive renovations were done to the pool, including new waterline tiles and coping as well as the purchase of new seating and sun umbrellas. This spring we are working on the clubhouse building with a fresh new exterior look featuring vinyl siding and trim. Private parties to celebrate birthdays, the end of a sports season for the team, graduations, etc., are available to our owner

members at very reasonable rates. We consider our club a true ‘community,’ and each owner member is a part of our pool family. We encourage owner participation in the annual meeting and election of the board of directors, and we promote community spirit in spring volunteer workdays. As part of our wanting to give back to the Helena community, we donated a membership to Helena Intermediate and to the Helena Athletic Association for their auctions in 2014.

Catching up with Vonetta Flowers Three Winter Olympics ago, in 2002, a local resident "went for the gold" in Salt Lake City— and brought it home! A Helena resident at the time, Vonetta Flowers and her bobsled driver Jill Bakken became the first Americans to ever win gold in the bobsled event and Vonetta became both the first Black American and the first person from Alabama to ever win gold in the Winter Olympics.

We caught up with Vonetta recently… Q. What have you been doing since winning a gold medal as a member of the American women's bobsled team in 2002? A. "We moved to Jacksonville, Florida, so that our son could attend Clarke Jacksonville — a school dedicated to teaching kids with cochlear implants how to listen and speak. We have been

really pleased with his progress but the journey that has taken us away from our friends and family in Birmingham." Q. What are you doing these days? A. "Family is very important for me, and I embrace my role as a mother. I am my son's biggest cheerleader. My boys are very active in football, baseball, soccer and track. I am also a public speaker and a spokesperson for BP and Liberty Mutual Insurance (and co-owner of D1 Sports in Bham-with former Tide great and member of the Philadelphia Eagles, Demeco Ryans)." Q. How has winning the gold medal changed your life? A. "In an instant, I went from a young girl from Birmingham, Alabama with dreams of competing in the Summer Olympics to a Gold Medalist In the Winter Olympics. This in turn has given me a platform to inspire others to follow their dreams, take risks, embrace change and live life to fullest. My faith has grown tremendously, and I've truly been humbled by the whole experience. I only hope that I can have a positive impact on a young person's life much like Jackie Joyner Kersee had on mine."

Q. How is the family? A. "We live a very active lifestyle. Keeping up with them keeps me fit. This time of the year we spend most of our time at the soccer and baseball fields. Our youngest, Jaxon, hasn't started competing in sports… When he does I think we're AFTER

Parks and Recreation schedule and updates from Jason Powers Helena’s Spring Baseball, Girls Softball and Soccer seasons are in full swing now. Games are being played at Joe Tucker Park, Penhale Park and the Sports Complex. Come out and support the kids of Helena! Special thanks to Helena Middle School Head Baseball Coach, Bobby Cummins, for leading a baseball clinic for the players and coaches as well as UAB Head Men’s Soccer Coach, Mike Getman, for putting on a soccer coaching clinic for the Helena Youth Soccer Coaches. Both clinics were very well attended and received. Opening Ceremonies for baseball and softball were held Saturday, March 15, at the Helena Sports Complex. The event was a huge success. Many thanks to all of you that contributed in any way to make

this a terrific event for the city. Following the Opening Ceremonies, the event featured several activities for the kids and families to participate in and enjoy, including a dunk tank, a Home Run Contest, a Fastest Pitch contest and team pictures. The event raised over $6,000, which will be reinvested into the baseball/softball programs. The following improvements have been made to the Parks and Recreation facilities in the last few months: 1. Two new windscreens have been purchased and hung at Penhale Park. 2. The bathrooms at the Sports Complex and Penhale Park have been remodeled and refurbished. 3. Two new flag poles have been installed at the Sports Complex and Penhale Park.

4. The backstops have been repaired at the Big Joe Field and Penhale Field 3. 5. Parks and Recreation hosted a ‘Work Day’ March 8 and cleaned up the sports fields, press boxes, and did pressure washing at both the Sports Complex and Penhale Park. Upcoming City Events: • April 12th - Easter Egg Hunt to be held at the Amphitheater • May 9/10th - Buck Creek Festival at the Amphitheater Upcoming Sports Registrations: • Youth Cheerleading and Youth Football Registrations will begin in late April and run through May. Be on the lookout for exact days and times so that you can register your children and bring them in for uniform fittings. Cheerleading and tackle

football ranges from 1st - 6th grades. Do you want to get outside and enjoy the weather and have some great fun playing tennis? Helena has a league for you! We will be starting a new adult summer tennis league in May. Details are being finalized, but it will be a fun and relaxing league from the beginner to the advanced player. We have partnered with a USTA pro who will be available for lessons and will also be holding a tennis clinic this summer. With the weather getting better and better, don’t forget that you can rent our various pavilions at Cahaba Lily and Joe Tucker Parks! PHS Color Guard named best in Alabama at Southeastern CG Championships After a busy season of competitions, the Pelham High School Winterguard teams finished this year with some great performances at the Southeastern Color Guard Championships. The teams traveled to Nashville to compete against approximately 80 teams from across Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Performing at Belmont University arena, they made PHS proud. The Junior Varsity team worked hard on their show

entitled “Catch the Sun” and placed third in their final competition of the season. The Varsity team competed with their routine entitled “Springtime’s Song.” As awards were being finalized, they were about to announce the final two places in the varsity class. They announced that there was only 1/10 of a point difference in first and second place. This just showed what a stiff competition this can be for this group of girls. In the end, the varsity team ended up being named 1st place winners and Alabama State

Champions for their division! “We are so proud of their hard work and how well they represented Pelham High School,” said instructor Katy Burnside. These two routines along with the dance and majorette indoor

routines can be seen on April 21 at 7 pm in the Pelham High School gym in the Visual Ensemble Spring Showcase.

convenient for you and where your sales tax dollars work for you and me everyday! We have recently installed a new automotive section. We have popular brands of motor oil including Pennzoil, Mobil 1, Castrol, Valvoline and our own brand of quality oils, that are a little less expensive, called Master Mechanic.

Tool Time with Daniel I’m Daniel Baron, manager of Helena Hardware, a Tru Value store. I wanted to share a little bit about some things we offer here at Helena Hardware that will hopefully keep you shopping in Helena, where it’s most

We carry everything you need to keep your vehicle looking good, from washes and waxes to an all-in-one kit designed to make your headlights as clear as when they were new. We carry the top-of-the-line in automotive batteries—Interstate. (We also carry lawn mower batteries.) We have a sporting goods section where you can buy live bait for fishing in Joe Tucker Lake or Buck Creek, as well as artificial lures with a nice selection of fishing gear. We also have all the ammunition that gun owners need. Check us out!

Our swimming pool section has all the chemicals you need to maintain your swimming pool or hot tub, and we offer free testing to keep them in tip-top shape this summer. We recommend testing your water every two weeks to make sure you stay on top of things. Simply bring in a sample of your pool water and we’ll test it while you wait! We carry a full line of popular lawn products from makers like Fertilome®, including both pre- and post-emergants, and push mowers from makers like Husqvarna (which have Honda engines) and Poulan. Animal owners will appreciate our feed section from Nutrena. Whether you’re feeding horses, ducks or fish, come in and take a look at our prices on feed. Last but not least, if painting is in your near future, check out our Benjamin Moore Paint Center, where we can mix any color your heart desires and offer you expert advice on the best type of paint to

cover whatever it is that you need to paint. We also carry our own line of paint that we manufacture ourselves in a plant in Chicago. Although it costs less, I’d put it up against any name brand. It costs less because our company does not have a huge marketing budget to pay like many of the major brands do. Ask about our Easy Care® paint. That’s it for this issue. Have a terrific spring! I look forward to seeing all of you in the near future at the store where you can browse through the thousands of other products we carry, and then at the Buck Creek Festival and Rubber Duck Race next month! Until then,

Daniel

For the fourth year, Laura Beth Joseph has designed the winning Buck Creek Festival logo. “For this 13th festival year, I thought in terms of Lucky No. 13 and wanted to do something black and white, springing off the ‘chalkboard look’ that is so popular now.” Joseph says she always steers towards a design that will appeal to guys as well as gals, so avoids anything “too girly” for the t-shirt version. “This year,” said Joseph, “I wanted to capture the spirit of the Buck Creek Festival with a new look—definitely something different from past designs.”

Laura Joseph is making this into a habit—Great job!

Friday, May 9th HEADLINER: Trotline www.trotline.net Helena is proud to welcome the high-energy, crowd-pleasing Trotline back to the Buck Creek Festival! After their dynamite performance last year, it was a no-brainer to ask the talented band to play for the enthusiastic crowds here once again. Hailing from Valdosta, Georgia, Trotline may be from the Deep South, and they may identify as a country band, by no means are they a one-trick pony! As Buck Creek Festival attendees found out last year, this band can truly pump up the crowd with many different styles of music, from party tracks, classic and southern rock to Motown and even golden oldies. Since forming in 1997, Trotline has become a top choice in the south for parties and events, and the band has grown to enjoy one of the greatest followings in the Southeast. MEET THE BAND • Kenny Strickland is the main guy and front man for the band, singing lead vocals as well as playing acoustic guitar and harmonica. Kenny started playing guitar when he was nine-years-old with his family at gatherings on the weekends, where they sang and played country and bluegrass songs. • Gil Trimm not only plays lead guitar for Trotline, he also plays mandolin, which he

sometimes gets to bust out at gigs. Gil also grew up in south Georgia, and like Kenny, began playing guitar soon after birth at family get-togethers. • Garry Barnes is Trotline’s relentlessly energetic drummer. He is the driving beat behind the songs that keep the band’s audiences moving and the other band members motivated to stay up tempo. • Alex Craig handles bass guitar and backup vocals. Alex was born in Mobile and grew up in Montgomery, where he began singing at a very early age at school and in church. In October 2005, Alex got the call to pick up the bass and sing backup vocals for Trotline. • Dustin Erwin, a Shelby County native from Chelsea, plays fiddle and guitar. He grew up playing the guitar and singing at family gatherings, as did Kenny and Gil. He then moved on to high school parties, camp fires and local events. After graduating high school, Dustin continued to play his acoustic at small local bars while attending Auburn University for two years. He then transferred to the University of Alabama where he graduated with a degree in business management. Trotline is a sure-fired crowd pleaser, so get there early for to get the best seats!

28 Spring Edition 2014 / www.CityOfHelena.org

Saturday, May 10th HEADLINER: U.S www.uscanus.com Formed over 20 years ago in Ontario, Canada, this group of seasoned musicians boasts a hard rock vibe and 1980s hair band style as they tour the southeast. Kelly Nagy, the lead singer and guitarist of U.S, met guitarist Jeff Manns in Ottawa, and drummer Richie Wright in Toronto. They started out playing “from the Canadian East coast to West coast and everything in between,” said Kelly. After answering an ad in Florida looking for bands on a whim—they immediately booked a tour. From there, U.S got into the college circuit, playing Greek and campus events all across the SEC. The band’s original name was “US,” pronounced like the “us” in “let us know.” Kelly laughed as he related the story of their accidental renaming. “In Florida, we were first sponsored by Anheuser-Busch, and when the sponsor rep. said, ‘It’s so ironic, a band from Canada called U.S,’ we ran with it,” he explained. The Canadian trio picked up bassist Joey Tannehill five years ago in Jackson on a tour in Mississippi. Richie didn’t think “Tannehill” was fitting for a rocker, so he nicknamed him Joey “The Snake” Vendetta. Joey, who works in a coffee shop half the week, is engaged to a beautiful girl named Stephanie, and the pair have a summer wedding set. Paul Badineaux, U.S’s audio

guy, also came to the band from Jackson around four years ago. Their video and lighting equipment is run by fellow Canadian Cory Lessard, who also does acoustic sets with Kelly at local bars like Papa Saia’s and Rio’s every few weeks. Kelly also works with Jeff to run Entertainer Buses, which have transported the likes of John Legend and Bad Company! When they aren’t touring, Jeff hangs out with his longtime girlfriend Hillary, and Kelly and Richie spend as much time as they can with their families. Kelly and his wife Lyne moved to Helena eight years ago, and their tenyear-old son Saxton is excited to see his daddy play at the Buck Creek Festival! Richie and his wife Rachel have two kids, Connor and Grayson, and Richie has two more children, Brennan and Brody. The Hangout in Gulf Shores sponsors U.S, and they play there regularly. “It’s a pretty familyoriented place, which we really like,” said Kelly. “We pride ourselves in saying we can play anywhere at any time–we rock hard, we bring it, but we play a clean show!” That’s what you can expect from U.S in Helena–a clean, familyfriendly show with plenty of noise, a ton of hair and more rock than you know what to do with! “We love what we do, and we’re blessed to be doing what we love in our hometowns,” Kelly concluded.

Old Town’s premier clothier, Helena Mercantile, is excited to announce it has moved to a new spot, just across the street from its prior location. Owner Amy Webb said being housed in the white chapel next door to Ice & Coal Gallery makes the store more customer-friendly. “There is more parking with better

access to the store in both the front and back,” Amy explained. The larger location has also given her the chance to expand the shoe, jewelry and gift sections of the store. “We’re able to carry more lines now, like Off The Beaten Track shoes, Tyler Candle Company products, and Mud Pie accessories and gifts,” she said. Amy also offers more pieces of locally-made jewelry, including work by both Beth Menke of One Red Bead and Cassie Pitts of Snazzy Apple. Easter dresses and summer clothing, too, have begun to make their way onto the racks at Helena Mercantile. “We also have handmade bags from real stretched soft leather, all with original broaches and other pieces of made or antique jewelry adorning them,” Amy explained. “We have a big store-

Tower of Power Band marches in NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade hard at what they enjoy and discussed a little about life in a Broadway musical. “This was really exciting to have the students get to speak to professional musicians and to learn a little about life on Broadway,” said PHS director Jeff Burnside. The parade was through the streets of NYC right down 5th Avenue. It might have been old, but the students were prepared with leggings, hand warmers, and lots of layers. The streets were lined with New Yorkers who seemed very excited to have the band from Alabama visit and entertain them in their city. Roughly two million people lined the streets for the parade which was about thirty five city blocks long. “It was exciting to see the students having fun marching through the streets of New York City in the parade,” said Mr. Burnside.

The cold weather didn’t put a damper on the fun the Pelham High School Tower of Power Marching Band recently had on its visit to New York City. The band left Alabama March 15 ready for a great trip sightseeing in New York City along with marching in the New York City St Patrick’s Day parade. The students had the opportunity to visit several tourist spots such as Central Park, Ellis Island, Rockefeller Center and the 911 memorial. They also were treated to two musicals to really see some professional musicians on Broadway. The students enjoyed the Disney musical Newsies and the Broadway awardwinning show Jersey Boys. After Jersey Boys, the students and chaperones had the opportunity to meet with the musicians and many of the actors after the show to participate in a Q and A session. The musicians encouraged the students to work

Helena Beautification Award - the Naccari home As early in the spring season as it is, the home of Ron and Barbara Naccari at 127 Chadwick Drive has touches of eye-catching color and is immaculately groomed to welcome warmer days ahead. With their front door matching the potted red geranium nearby and accented with a forsythia woven wreath, your eye is also drawn to the exuberant large Macho Fern mounted near the front façade. This replaced a previous tree that died, and now the fern is seasonally decorated (in good taste, of course) year round. The Naccaris admit to being quite particular about their entire yard. The front beds were enlarged to five feet in width many years ago, and like many

local gardeners, they had to replace and enhance the red clay soil in every bed to get the best results. The large red maple now beginning to leaf out gives a showy fall foliage presentation, as do their Crape Myrtles in summer. “We use TruGreen yard service and think that is the best way to have a weed-free lawn,” said Ron. “We used to fertilize with ammonium nitrate and our grass was so lush, but of course that is now no longer available, as it is used in building bombs!” In an alcove to the right side of the house, just beyond the yellow jasmine-covered arbor, is the special “Mom’s Garden” dedicated to both of their mothers. Centered in the

garden is a small statue of the Blessed Mother surrounded by Limelight hydrangeas. “This is our way of honoring our roots and showing our devotion,” they say. Both come from Italian Catholic families. Further in the back yard are autumn ferns and lush mounds of purple phlox, which are a favorite of Ron’s. Being in the direct path of the summer sun makes their back yard ideal for summer vegetables such as tomatoes, eggplant and Cucuzza, a long squash/gourd vegetable that “grows like kudzu” and is planted from saved seeds each year. This has become a favorite ingredient in their homemade Italian dishes. Ron and Barbara acknowledge that the Old Farmer’s Almanac says not to plant until after Good Friday, so the Naccaris invite you to drive by again after Easter and treat yourself to an even more colorful vista! The Helena Beautification awards were created to showcase those citizens and businesses that go the extra mile to make

the world around them a more beautiful place by creating and maintaining beautiful landscapes. We welcome your nominations. To nominate a residence or business for the beautification award, send an email to: Chris@ChrisVanCleave.com Please tell us who you are, the address of the residence or business you are nominating and why you think they deserve the award. (She missed all around gold by a mere five-tenths of a point.) Based on her performance, Robyn is one of eight Level 7 gymnasts who will comprise Team Alabama at the Region 8 Level 7 Gymnastics Championships in Concord, North Carolina

on the weekend of April 25. Joining Alabama in Region 8 are Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Top it Off Yogurt Top It Off Yogurt is introducing its brand new Smoothies Program over the next month. “Our new introductions are healthy—gluten and dairy free, with no artificial colors or sweeteners,” said owner Shetal Modi. “We have found that they appeal to everyone.” One choice is sweetened only with natural fruit; the other is sweetened with sugar cane and beet sugar—and a 16 oz cup contains only 120-130 calories. The Dr. Smoothie brand is an innovative California leader in specialty beverages with the mantra “Everything we do has a healthy twist.” You can choose to supplement your smoothie for $1 more with an Antioxidant & Immune Blend, High Energy Blend, Weight Loss Blend or Protein Blend. The energy blend, noted

assistant manager Valerie Richards, is a good choice before doing high impact fitness and will not leave you ‘crashing’ afterwards. We are currently testing 18 different flavors, “ Modi said. “Ultimately, our customers will choose the ones we will keep.” During May, Top It Off will bring on the Yo-Shake—a yogurt-based milkshake made from your choice of yogurt plus fruit toppings. Veggie smoothies are also soon to be added to their growing menu. In the fall, they will begin

serving Café Essentials, which include a hot or cold Chai Latte. These products will have no artificial flavors, sweeteners or colors and will have less fat and sugar. Come by Top It Off Yogurt and let Emma, Khushee, Jajuan, Rachel or Kristen help you with your own custom creation! Valerie recommends the Blue Bayou smoothie, and Kushee

believes you can never go wrong with Strawberry Banana Cabana. The Awesome Acia Smoothie, which incorporates the Brazilian super fruit, sounds intriguing, too. Lifelong Helena turkey hunter builds a better turkey call

Move over, Duck Dynasty— Joe Hamm has the next big thing in bird hunting, and it has nothing to do with ducks. This Helena man began hunting turkeys with his grandfather, TC Chappell, when he was just six years old, and still hunts today. Although he currently works for Alabama Power running contract transmission line crews, he is considering retirement to pursue a more personal dream. Years ago, he worked as a representative for several turkey call companies at hunting shows. Now, after more than 50 years

of hunting experiences with his grandfather, Uncle TC Jr., Uncle Frank and other master hunters, Joe is starting to realize his lifelong dream of building his own turkey call business. Together with his friend, Junior Robinson, who has more than 40 years of turkey call design experience, Joe launched the Hunter’s Addiction Custom Calls company earlier this year. They have had success in many privately-owned hunting supply stores in Alabama, Kentucky, Arkansas and South Carolina, and are already in talks with many

more stores to sell their products in the coming year. The biggest difference in the Hunter’s Addiction box call from many others is its size–it’s small, just big enough to fit in the palm of your hand or in a shirt pocket. “If you’ve got our box call in your pocket, and a mouth call between your teeth, you don’t even need to worry with a vest,” Joe explained. As research for their mouth call, Joe had several hunters send in mouth calls they had bought and whittled them down to a more comfortable and usable size. After determining these hunters had separately carved the calls down to a similar shape, Junior used these on which to base his new mouth call design. Joe is so dedicated to this sport that he has achieved two coveted world slams (as well as other types of slams) in turkey

hunting. In order to achieve this, he had to bag one of each of the following species: Eastern, Rio Grande, Merriam’s, Osceola, Ghould’s and Ocellated turkeys. All of these are found in North America and Mexico except the Ocellated turkey, which is only found on the Yucatán Peninsula. He is one of few hunters to have caught and registered a turkey with four spurs on its legs instead of two. It was an Eastern turkey, which he says he bagged in Montevallo a few years back. “I still enjoy hunting just as much as I did when I first got into it, and that is still the heart of my work,” said Joe. “My plan isn’t to have the biggest turkey call company in the world. I just want to provide the highest quality call on the market for a competitive price.” “We’re just hunters making turkey calls for other hunters.”

Helena resident at Montevallo receives recognition for game design Four students in the Game Studies and Design program at the University of Montevallo have been recognized by GameCareerGuide for creating innovative games in their most recent Game Design Challenge. GameCareerGuide.com is a nationally recognized website for game design. The challenge from the website during this round was: “Take This Job and Play It.” The goal was to design a game based on a real-world occupation that the player would not normally be able to experience. Garrett Roth of Helena, one

of the recognized students, created HEROIC Firefighter Simulator 2015 in which the player takes on the exciting role of a firefighter. While most missions in the game task the player with the normal duties of a firefighter, in a bit of a fun twist, occasional situations also include the interference of a super hero and/or a super villain. The goal in all the game’s missions is to save as many victims and put out as many fires as possible while dodging interfering characters. Congratulations, Garrett!

10th Annual PHS Write Night honors creative students of all types The 10th Annual Write Night truly earned its title, “It Will Always Go On,” after being cancelled several times due to winter weather ravaging the region. The event, produced by the PHS Literary Magazine and the Theatre Department, garnered its largest audience ever on a wintery February night even after a day without school. Featuring twenty-eight performances of music, poetry and dramatic readings, the

night was emceed by Matthew Hill, Haley Giffin and Bailey Stephens. Joseph Burnett received a standing ovation and cheers for his drum solo and an original, improv jazzy piece played by Jay Newton (bass) Nathan Gaskins (electric guitar) Lane Clark and Gerardo Hernandez (acoustic guitar) was a highlight near the show’s end. Write Night is a celebration of all the arts with the PHS theater

lobby staged as a temporary gallery for student work in photography, sculpture and drawings on display. Recently, at the Trumbauer State Festival, competition, the cast of Almost, Maine proudly placed second. Cast members Hunter Savage, Kayla Turner, Matt Hill, John Kennedy, Emily Orcutt, Brooke Thompson, Kaylie Rose Elward, Blaine Elward, Lydia Cobb and Caylin Cobb presented a flawless

performance under the guidance of theater teacher, Jamie Stephenson. Also at the state competition held at Troy, John Kennedy gave an incredible monologue and Hannah Boutwell placed second in sound design, and Kaylen Cobb placed first in pantomime. Upcoming is a presentation of “The Foreigner,” so take that opportunity to attend and support the talent in the PHS Theater Department.

Jordan Narkates— singing his way to stardom At the recent HMS Dessert Cabaret, Jordan Narkates wowed the audience with his rendition of “Piano Man”—his first piano accompanied vocal solo. “He told me, ‘Mom, I want to learn how to play the piano; it’s the most difficult instrument, and if I can master that, I think I can learn any other,’” Missy Narkates related. When Missy turned to Craigslist to search for a piano, she found a 100-year-old piano that the owner was willing to give to Jordan “if he promised to use it well.” Although Jordan enjoys pop music, country, classic rock, Michael Jackson, Elvis, and especially Journey and Adam Levine (whose voice, he now notes, is similar to what he expects his own to be), he did not originally think he was

much of a singer. The first time he decided to sing was in his own family room when his cousin, Elena Rouse from Dubai, was visiting. “She is more of a singer and actress than me. She wanted us to have a singing contest. I said, ‘I don’t like singing; I don’t think I can sing,’” he said. Jordan recalls that when he began to sing “Why Do Fools Fall in Love”, his grandmother came down to listen and “her jaw almost touched the ground” in surprise. She brought his

mom down to hear the talent show that ensued. The next time he sang publicly was in 5th grade during an “open mic” session on the bus while returning from Washington D.C. with his class. One chaperone told his mother that he should think about pursuing choir rather than his plans to join the band as a percussionist—good advice. After his performance in the 6th grade Talent Show, HMS choir director Frank Andrews made suggestions for technical improvement and stage presence. “Since then I have grown with my voice,” Jordan said, noting his range has dropped about four notes in the last year since he began singing in the HMS choir. He also lost one or two of his highest notes in the transition, but approaches his changing voice with the idea, “Whatever God has for me is good.” Jordan indeed has it good: after singing with Young Voices, a group of the best young auditioned singers across the state last year, Jordan auditioned and was accepted into the Birmingham Boys Choir under the direction of Ken Berg. Jordan

said, “That has been a blast!” He recently took home the “Best Solo” award at Homewood’s South Central Classic show choir competition, and “Best Male Soloist” at Albertville’s Diamond Classic. He was even chosen to sing the National Anthem at the Birmingham Barons game for Fathers’ Day this year on Friday, June 13. Up next is a series of recording sessions with Kevin Derryberry, Christian musician and former lead singer for Telluride. They have already had one session which went well. This CD will be used to garner donations to fund his trip with the BBC next summer to Prague and the Czech Republic. Jordan says his faith and primary inspiration is drawn from Jeremiah 29:11, and he dedicates a song annually at Relay for Life to his Nana, who shares with him her “wings from heaven.” Jordan and his parents, David and Missy, also ask Alabama songwriters to contact them should they have an interest in sharing their original songs for him to perform.

Terry Brasseale opens Helena Health Club in former Showhouse building Helena’s newest amenity is the addition of Helena Health Club, which shares a building with the Top It Off frozen yogurt on Hwy 95. The club, owned by Terry Brasseale, opened the end of March. Their hours are 4am10pm Monday-Friday, 6am7pm on Saturday, and 1pm-7pm on Sunday. The gym offers top-of-theline cardio and strength training equipment that is unique to Alabama, along with personal trainers, multiple fitness and training classes and even childcare for parents as they work out. “We’re a small-town gym with big-town amenities,” said Terry. He got his start in fitness with 18 years as the head baseball coach at McAdory High. “I coached a little bit of everything at McAdory, including Bo Jackson, so that was my 15 minutes of fame,” Terry laughed. Since his coaching days,

he has run three successful gyms: Iron Works Fitness in Hueytown, Lady Works Fitness in Pelham, and Northridge Fitness in Tuscaloosa, for more than 30 years of gym management and ownership. He retired from the business three years ago, got married to Melissa Nelson, and they had their beautiful daughter Sadie just last year. But when he received word that Helena Fitness was closing, he saw a need for a fitness center in Helena and had the desire to open up a gym from scratch. “Personal trainer Jeff Wood and a few other employees from Helena Fitness will come over to work for us, and we will honor all contracts from that establishment,” Terry explained. “We want to be very involved with the community, and to help Helena schools with their athletic needs,” he continued. The club will also

give membership discounts to veterans, firemen, policemen and teachers. “We’re hiring good people, with good experience and professionalism,” Terry said. “I believe strongly in good service.” His sister Rosemary Elrod is the front desk manager, David Purcell manages the club, Scott Manwarning is in charge of membership services and Mary Ducio is the head of the childcare staff. Childcare is available for parents as they use the gym from 8-11am and

4-8pm Monday-Friday. They offer many classes, including Zumba, Spinning, Yoga, Pilates, TRX, Boot Camp and Kickboxing. Having a friendly and helpful staff to greet you, help with your routine, ask how you’re doing and invite you to fitness classes is the best way Terry can see to really give Helena residents the best gym experience possible. Assistant Attorney General serving up more than rulings at Rio’s

If you’ve been to Rio’s Bar and Grill on a Tuesday night lately, chances are you heard the husky, animated voice of Erin Agricola throughout the night. While at Rio’s, she can be heard many places: singing as she plays guitar onstage; announcing the next performer during Open Mic Night, which she hosts at Rio’s weekly; or talking to the stream of regulars and new faces as they come in through the door. Quick to smile, easy to laugh with, and always talking to someone, it’s clear why Erin thrives in such a social setting. “It’s a lot of fun, I have a lot of friends here. These people will help you out. I love this bar— and I owe it a lot,” she said. After earning her undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice at UAB, Erin worked from 2010 – 2013 at the Alabama Department of

Labor. Appointed by Luther Strange to the position as an Assistant Attorney General, she functioned as an Administrative Hearing Officer (AHO). Last March, she made a lateral move to become Deputy Attorney General and Chief Counsel in another agency. “I loved the people and they did a great job, it just wasn’t the right fit because I wanted to be in court more,” she said. Going back to work at the Dept. of Labor is what she wanted to do, but complicated paperwork put that on hold for a while. Around that time, Rio’s owner Crystal Hamrick was looking for a new open mic night host, and Erin threw her hat in the ring. “After a few weeks of doing open mic, Crystal decided to help me out and asked me to do some bartending too,” Erin said. Crystal took this chance on Erin

that truly benefited the both of them. “For months last year, I was working at least 3-4 days a week bartending at Rio’s. I don’t know what I would have done without this place,” Erin said. Although she still hosts Open Mic Night every Tuesday at Rio’s, and still bartends on Saturday “mornings,” Helena’s most law-abiding bartender was able to get her job back at the Dept. of Labor. As an Assistant Attorney General and acting AHO, she presides over Unemployment Compensation Appeals hearings. “I swear the parties in, take testimony, and rule on objections, just like a mini “trial.” But I don’t get to have a gavel or wear a robe,” she explained, laughing. “I know the law as a cut-and-dry situation, but I know life has no cut-anddry situations.” So if you ever find yourself out of a job and in a legal pickle, she’s your lady. Oh, and if you need wedding photos, baby pictures, or just about anything drawn in pastels, Erin would love to make good use of her talent and Studio Art minor to help you out. She is open for commissions just about any time, just look her up on Facebook or come down to Rio’s to hash out the details.

While there, check out the bottle cap “back bar” Erin made as thanks to Crystal for how the bar was able to keep her on her feet financially. But she said, “I’ll never be able to truly repay them for what they did for me.” As for how she got into actually playing on stage at Rio’s? Erin blushes and laughs when answering, “When I told Crystal I would host open mic, I was really scared I wouldn’t have enough songs in my repertoire, or that my HUGE stage fright issue might rear its ugly head!” She learned how to play many songs by watching “Jar Of Hearts” singer Christina Perry’s covers on YouTube, then practicing at home until she could perform them perfectly. She recently debuted Adele’s “Don’t You Remember” to the Open Mic crowd, who, of course, enthusiastically cheered her on through her first performance. Erin is always on the hunt for more performers to come to Rio’s—and more audience members, too. “Anyone can benefit from coming here, it’s a great place to relax and let your hair down,” she says. “But really— the sense of community and philanthropy at Rio’s is something you can’t get anywhere else around here. They’re great folks!”
