Hello Pelham! This issue features Kelly Colvert, a Pelham wife, mother, recent college graduate and cancer survivor on its cover. Read her inspirational story on the next page. It’s good news for anybody going through their own struggles. My thanks to Kelly for being so willing to share her journey with us, and best of luck to her on landing a permanent teaching job! You might have noticed the new sign outside Pelham City Hall proclaiming it to be “Under New Management.” Mayor Waters wants residents to know that NO city funds were used for this. He paid for it and simply wanted everyone to know that city hall has an open door policy for you and any concerns you might have. I attended a city council meeting recently and it was evident that a new day is dawning on Pelham. Now if this darned economy will just cooperate… Congratulations to all the athletes at Pelham High School who have signed scholarships recently to play baseball, football and softball at the next level. Some are pictured inside this edition. Our congratulations go out to the players on their tremendous accomplishments. A new Miss PHS was selected last month. Savanna Windham, a senior, was crowned. See pictures of all the winners on page 22. Have you dreamed of becoming a writer? Hone your skills at a writing workshop coming up March 4-7 at the Pelham Library. Author Robert Inman is the host. Spaces are limited. Contact the library for complete details at 620-6418. Most know that the University of Alabama hockey team, known as the Frozen Tide, calls the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena home. They vie for another berth in the nationals this year by winning the SECHC regional tournament later this month in Huntsville. There is a video available for fans to watch online about the team’s historic inaugural trip to the national tournament last season in New Jersey. See page 13 for more details. Speaking of sports, it’s amazing to think that with the Tide’s victory over
Notre Dame in January, the crystal ball remains in Alabama for the fourth year in a row. A retouched photo found on the Internet shows an Alabama welcome sign declaring “Welcome to Alabama, the home of the crystal ball” and showing four crystal footballs below it. Maybe we should consider forgetting the old “Cotton State” moniker and consider naming ourselves the crystal state instead. (Big grin.) The picture also shows half of a double wide making its way down the interstate in the background. Don’t know if that was intentional or not. Congratulations to Coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide on another national championship! Every sports run has its cycle, and in football, the Tide is high right now. However, a former Auburn University offensive coordinator, you know, the architect of their own 2010 national title season, is back as head coach on the Plains. Even though Gus Malzahn got a late start in recruiting, he managed to attract some excellent recruiters and coaches to his staff and reeled in a class rated at No. 8 nationally by most services. An excellent haul, and when you consider many of these were of the junior college variety, don’t be surprised to see the Tigers vastly improved next season. If the last Auburn basketball game vs. Bama is any indication, the next Iron Bowl, played in Auburn, should be a war with the War Eagle faithful hungry for a win. I can’t wait. For those who just can’t get enough football, exciting news is right around the corner. The Alabama Crusaders, a semi-pro team playing in the XSFL, start league play Saturday, March 2, 4 p.m., at home vs. the Alabama Warriors. All Crusader home games will be played at Pelham High’s Ned Bearden Stadium. More on page 27. Baseball and softball are about to begin play as this goes to press. Schedules are inside for both our high school and middle school teams. Be sure to come out and support the local teams whenever you have the opportunity. There’s a lot more inside. I hope you enjoy this edition. Please remember to support our advertisers! Warm Wishes,
Kelly Colvert sets example for all In her successful battle for life This vivacious, spunky young Pelham wife, mother and teacher is in the prime of her life. Extremely active, upon meeting her, one would never guess all she has endured over the last year and four months. As a wife and mother, Kelly was diligent about her health. In April 2011, she discovered a lump the size of a pea in her left breast. By October, it had grown to the size of a quarter, so she decided it was time to see a doctor. When the physician on duty at Henderson and Walton tried to biopsy it, the mass was solid, and she suspected cancer. “If you’ve got to have cancer, breast cancer is the best kind to have, because more research is done on it, and constant advancements are made in treatments,” she said. Kelly’s OB/GYN, Dr. Dan Hudson, referred her for additional testing and told Kelly that he, too, suspected it was breast cancer, but would notify her for certain the following Monday. At the time Kelly was working as assistant director at a daycare. She picked up children from local schools and took them to their after-school care center, so she didn’t think receiving news of that magnitude while caring for or transporting children was prudent. So she requested that the doctor notify her mother with the results. To say Kelly was an incredibly active 36-year-old woman would be an understatement. With husband, Kevin, working out-of-town quite often, Kelly pulled double-duty with their two sons, Jacob and Austin. She serves her church, Shepherd of the Hills, as Sunday school superintendent and teacher and its Vacation Bible School (VBS) director. And in August 2010, Kelly started college to realize her life-long dream of becoming a school teacher. But on October 31, 2011, life threw Kelly a curve. She had taken the boys trick-or-treating through their neighborhood with old friends and former neighbors. As they were returning home, she noticed a car parked in front of her house. It was her parents, Merry and Rick Lee. Kelly said, “I thought to myself, this can’t be good, or they wouldn’t have driven all the way over from 280 to deliver the news.” She sat on pins and needles as her parents talked with the former neighbors. After they left, her parents told the boys that they needed to talk
to Kelly alone. Her mother told her, “The test was positive.” Kelly had breast cancer. She said her only thought at the time was “How am I going to tell my son Jacob, an 11-year-old, that I have cancer? I can’t.” She let her parents tell him as well as Austin who was really too young at the time to understand. Dr. Hudson referred Kelly to Dr. Jerry Kitchens. With her mother by her side, after being told her options, Kelly elected to have a double mastectomy. Kelly was familiar and comfortable with the surgeon, Dr. Jerry Kitchens, since he had performed two umbilical hernia surgeries on her previously. The first in 2007 when she was 12-weeks pregnant with Austin and another eight months postpartum. On December 9, 2011, Dr. Kitchens performed his third surgery on Kelly, and Dr. Stephen Steinmetz placed expanders in place to be used for reconstructive purposes. As per protocol, the Sentinel lymph nodes were sent to pathology at the beginning of surgery, and they came back negative. But since the mass was so large, he decided to take seven more, and three were positive for cancer. Kelly said, “Thank goodness he didn’t rely on the initial result.” Kelly’s diagnosis was HER2-positive stage-three breast cancer, and she was told by her oncologist, Dr. Harvey, that her treatment would include six months of chemotherapy with Herceptin infusions. In January 2012, she started her first round of chemo and finished her final round this past summer. During her rigorous cancer treatment, Kelly faced a couple of bumps in the road. Before losing her long blonde locks, she had scheduled a family portrait. Unfortunately, two days before the photo shoot, her hair started to fall out in clumps. So with her good friend Sara Valadez, Kelly scheduled an appointment with her stylist, Becky Overton at Station 119, to have her head shaved. “Although I went in with the attitude of, I’m going to rock this bald head, in reality both Becky and I cried.” Kelly said, “I had a little breakdown that day.” Two days later, the Colverts had that family portrait done with Kelly wearing a wig in one and rocking the bald look in the others. The second bump came when she had a sore near the incision that would not heal. While participating in the North Shelby Relay for Life (RFL) this past May, her doctor told her she needed to come
in to the hospital for treatment. She had staph. It was the standard type, fortunately, that was She says some people have to travel easily treatable, but still required around the world for adventure. She hospitalization. The family moved to the area six years ago when John was transferred here to open a branch for his company, Bartlett Bearing. “We love it!” said Christine. Christine says she loves getting to know the children who come in to Oak Mountain Orthodontics best. “Watching them grow up and seeing their confidence grow as their smiles transform from ordinary and guarded to the ‘Movie Star Smiles’ for which we have become famous makes my job such a pleasure,” she said. Christine has worked with Dr. Denny four years and works in both her Pelham and Helena offices. She adds another thing she enjoys as marketing coordinator is participating in all the area events and festivals which Dr. Denny sponsors in the community.
Amy Dufour, Financial Coordinator Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, Amy and her husband, Damon, transferred to the area with his job in construction sales. The couple has two daughters: Olivia, 11 and Elyse, 8. Amy is a relative newcomer to Dr. Denny’s office. She says her favorite part of working for Oak Mountain Orthodontics is the friendly family environment. “Working with Dr. Denny and seeing her interact with her patients is an inspiration,” said Amy. “They always leave with a smile, and as their treatment progresses, that smile gets bigger and bigger!”
Stacey Parr, Clinical Orthodontic Assistant Stacey grew up in Oak Grove, Alabama. She is married to Jeremy and has three children: Jayme, 19; Kinslea, 6 and Bentley, 1. Being a country girl, Stacey is an avid deer hunter and enjoys fishing whenever she gets the chance. “Dr. Denny and the ladies who work here at Oak Mountain Orthodontics make going to work fun every day,” said Stacey. It’s a real team effort here, and everybody wants to make our patients’ visits as comfortable as possible. “Our goal is to transform their teeth into ‘Movie Star Smiles,’ and with Dr. Denny’s skillful expertise, it happens every day! It is very rewarding to watch the patients as their confidence and smiles grow. Working with Dr. Denny is just an added bonus. She has a way of making our patients relax and become like members of our family.
Nicole Richardson, Clinical Orthodontic Assistant A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Nicole has been an orthodontic assistant for the past 19 years. She has two children: daughter Anna Sage, 9 and son Hannon, 7. “We run from sport to sport when I am not working,” laughed Nicole. “From horseback riding and gymnastics for Anna Sage to lacrosse and basketball for Hannon, we stay active year round. “The thing I love most at Oak Mountain Orthodontics is meeting all the new patients,” she said. I love the laid back atmosphere Dr. Denny has in her offices. It is very rewarding to watch the patients’ faces when, after going through months and years of orthodontic treatment, they finally get their braces off and look at their new ‘Movie Star Smiles’ in the mirror for the first time. You can actually watch their faces light up as their confidence grows!”

Music educators from across Alabama joined together January 10, 2013 at the AMEA convention in Montgomery, Alabama, where the Pelham High School Wind Ensemble had the privilege of performing for them. The Wind Ensemble was selected from many groups who applied to perform for this prestigious event. In order to have this opportunity, the Mr. Jeff Burnside, band director, submitted a performance application that included recordings from the past two years, pictures of the band and the band director’s resume. The Pelham High Wind Ensemble was selected from applications which came in from across the state. This is an honor because these students had the opportunity to share their many talents. There are limited groups each year who have the chance to perform. Working towards the AMEA program gives the students an extra goal to work for and provides a great deal of exposure and prestige to the program. “The caliber of performance expected at this performance is much greater than that expected at a normal festival or concert. We felt that this year’s invitation was significant since this year had the largest numbers of bands to ever apply and we still got chosen,” said Mr. Burnside The band worked on music ranging from several “band classics” from the turn of the 20th century to music just written and released this fall. Their goal was to perform a difficult, yet “fun” program that the audience remembers after the concert is over. “It’s one of the best events we can be invited to attend to showcase the talents and hard work of our students. Getting an invitation wasn’t easy, and because most of the crowd are music educators, leaving them impressed was a tough thing to do,” said Mr. Burnside. The concert came off without a hitch, and congratulations are in order for Jeff Burnside and all the members of the Pelham High School Wind Ensemble.

Seniors in the Spotlight… Gloria Hudson and Dick Paxton “I never thought that at this age I would be so happy!” Gloria Hudson says. “I am very grateful and intend to stay active.” Gloria grew up in Denver, a child of two parents who loved ballroom dancing. She recalls her father would twirl her and her sister around the room. “They said we learned how to dance and right after that, we learned how to walk.” Gloria lived in Mountain Brook with her husband of 56 years, who died in 2002. Meanwhile, Dick Paxton, originally a Hoosier and a SeaBee who served in World War II, had moved from Roebuck, KY, to Pelham with his wife of 53 years to be near children and grandchildren. His wife died from cancer in 2001. Dick has survived oral cancer and a heart attack himself. The couple met at the new Pelham Senior Center (PSC) when Gloria decided to attend the Tuesday line dancing classes.
663-4111 21 Weatherly Club Dr.
“I thought my dancing days were over after my husband passed,” Gloria said, “but when I came to the center, there was Dick in the line dancing class. One thing led to another, and we began ballroom dancing together.” The couple met in April and married December 10, 2007 at Shades Valley Presbyterian Church, where everyone joined in to dance in the fellowship hall. Their families also held a celebratory reception at the historic Brown Hotel and Seelbach Hotel (where Al Capone once gambled) in Louisville, Ky. They tease each other affectionately. “We got married so I could have knee surgery and have someone to take care of me. Besides, I was crazy about him!” Dick adds, “She thought I had money; I though she had money; we were both fooled!” “We built a new house – it’s our castle. He’s the king and I’m the queen. We have a beautiful yard that we work in all the time. My kids call it the Pelham Botanical Gardens!” Gloria and Dick dance weekly with other area groups, but they dedicate themselves to coordinating the monthly PSC dance every 3rd Friday. Together, they buy and set out refreshments, decorate the tables, hire the band and

then clean up. They say attendance is usually 35-40; the maximum is 50 for the space. With family members they have traveled to Branson, Williamsburg, Orlando, Phoenix, Santa Fe, and Colorado. They’ve also visited Dick’s son in Hawaii. “We love each others’ children—his daughter is about my best friend,” Gloria smiles. “All the children and grandchildren call me “Bami” and he is known as Papa Dick.” Gloria and Dick agree, “We have more fun than the law allows—we dance, we work in the yard, we work with the Pelham Library
Guild. We enjoy the walking trails. We have fun every day!” Dick says, “It isn’t a senior moment — we carry so much information — it takes longer for information to come to our frontal lobe!” Dick & Gloria can still tell jokes, but Gloria says she sometimes can’t remember names. (At the age of 90, we’ll look past that.) These two, who go together like peanut butter and jelly, according to PSC Director Regina Jiminez, celebrate their anniversary every month, so here’s wishing Gloria and Dick a Happy 60th Anniversary! These two make one inspiring couple to say the very least, letting us all know that there is happiness to be found at any age!

Get in Shape and have fun… Try TRX at the YMCA!
Pelham recognized as one of the best places in Alabama to raise kids!
“TRX is such a great system and many people still don’t know about it,” said Erin Brown, trainer at the Shelby County Branch of the YMCA in Pelham. “Part of what I love is that all ages and all strengths and fitness levels can benefit from this workout.” The core and muscles are activated as you leverage gravity and your body weight to perform any of hundreds of exercises. You’re in control of how much you want to challenge yourself on each exercise, because you can simply adjust your body position to add or decrease resistance. Brown received certified TRX training in Atlanta. TRX Suspension Training was developed by a Navy SEAL to take advantage of an exercise routine that develops strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously and, in a confined area—such as a submarine. Brown’s TRX beginner classes are 45 minutes; advanced classes are one hour. As a trainer, she suggests TRX as a way to add variety to weights/machines or the opopular Body Pump classes. TRX can complement spinning to increase upper body strength. Brown also suggests a water class in the YMCA’s heated indoor swimming pool afterwards to relax and detox. This year, she plans to offer classes throughout the day, one-on-one or in groups of up to 10. “When you get on the bands it’s a whole new world! In groups larger than 3, when you’re not on the bands, I add in Boot Camp exercises to keep the heart rate up.” Ready to give TRX a try? Call 205-664-9622 for more information.
Over 3,200 cities around the country with populations from 5,000-50,000 were looked at recently by Business Week and Bloomberg Rankings, and Pelham was selected as one of the Best Places in Alabama to Raise Kids! “Public school performance and safety were weighed most heavily. To analyze the local job market, we looked at median income and county-level unemployment. Other factors include housing costs, commute time, poverty, adults’ educational attainment, share of households with children, and diversity,” according to the Website analysis. “This Birmingham suburb is home to the Alabama State Fair, where this summer, participants in the agricultural 4H club showed off their rabbits and dairy goats in a livestock contest. While waiting for next year’s fair, kids can hike, bike, or ride horses at Pelham’s Oak Mountain State Park, Alabama’s largest state park,” according to the ranking’s Website at businessweek.com. The analysis lists various categories including the city’s population of 20,878, a www.GreatSchools.org score of 8, a median family income of $82,542 and a county unemployment rate of just 5.4 percent. It also notes the housing costs as a percentage of income at only 19 percent. As Mayor Waters and the new Pelham City Council look towards the future, this is just one more feather in Pelham’s cap that they can use in attracting more amenities to the city. Hats off to the residents of Pelham on this outstanding recognition.

Shelby County’s Elementary Teacher of the Year is Ginger Aaron, the physical education instructor for 12 years at Valley Elementary, where her innovative program was one of the first in the area to incorporate technology and to have a climbing wall and fitness lab. She was honored on December 3 at an awards event sponsored by the Greater Shelby County Education Foundation. Aaron is a University of Montevallo graduate holding a B.S. and M.Ed., and an Education Specialist degree from UAB. She was also selected the VES Teacher of the Year in 2010. “My classroom is a safe environment where all students find success,” she wrote in an essay included in her nomination form. “The success is not limited to the smartest, the fastest, or the strongest, but instead encompasses each and every child in a way that enables them to have a stronger self-worth.” “As an educator I firmly believe that I should be an advocate for my students,” she said. “My first advocacy role is making my students aware that I love them, care for them, and want what is truly best for them. My students feel my love and respect because I get to know them personally. I discern their likes and dislikes, their joys and fears, and what intrinsically and extrinsically is a motivator.” Aaron’s article, “A 5-Step Approach: Utilizing Paraprofessionals in Inclusive Physical Education” was published in the Alabama State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Journal. It highlighted her work with special needs students. By sharing activity/classroom brain research information, Aaron also promotes opportunities for her colleagues to improve their own personal health and fitness. Aaron was recently awarded a $4,000 grant through Fuel Up to Play 60. “With a portion of this grant money, I purchased “recess packs” for every classroom. These recess packs are filled with soccer balls, footballs, four-square balls, bean bags, jump ropes and Frisbees.” Classes will carry this equipment with them to recess in an effort to increase physical activity. Additionally, through the support of the community, four-square courts and hopscotch courts were recently painted on the outdoor play space for student use. Aaron encourages young students to try out many different types of physical activities and to incorporate at least 60 minutes of physical activity into each day. “This time should be enjoyable for every child,” and Aaron emphasizes, “Good sportsmanship and sensitivity to others are qualities that are a true necessity in the overall betterment of life.” Congratulations to Ginger Aaron on this latest prestigious award.

See Free Video of the Frozen Tide’s 2012 Journey to National Tournament
Most know by now that the University of Alabama Frozen Tide, a club level sport eight years in the making, plays its home hockey games at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena, but what fans may not know about is a terrific video from its 2012 season that can be viewed free online. It explains how a tragedy drove the team on their journey to the ACHA National Tournament in Vineland, New Jersey, last year and talks about the progression of the team over its past seven seasons. View it at www.hhmultimediallc.com/bama. Titled All the way to Jersey, it’s a must see for hockey fans and fans of University of Alabama sports. In the video, Coach Mike Quenneville and others talk about the season and the narrator explains how the late No. 71, David Mosier, who was expected to be a big contributor as a sophomore after a huge freshman campaign, died unexpectedly in his sleep and became an inspiration for the coaches and players. The team wore a symbolic “71” on their uniforms to remember David. Tragically, this was the third death in five years among players on the team, the other two due to cancer and a car wreck. The Frozen Tide has overcome a lot of abstacles in its first few years, but overcome them they did. In 2012, the ACHA named Alabama Coach Mike Quenneville its National Division III Coach of the Year. They also named goalie Sean Vinson to the first team South Region All Star team and defenseman Matt Mays to its third team. Currently ranked 2nd in the SECHC Western Division, the Frozen Tide will play in the conference tournament this month in Huntsville the weekend of February 22-24. This is the second year the tournament will be hosted at the Benton H. Wilcoxon Municipal Ice Complex. The format features eight teams, with four from each division. Opening rounds are Friday, Feb. 22. For complete tournament information, go to http://sechchockey.com/?page_id=193. Make a weekend of it and support your Frozen Tide! Pelham Author Pens Novel for Young Readers Sandra Jacobs’ new novel fuses enriching historical lessons with the fast-paced adventure that young readers crave. With the number of young people reading steadily on the rise, the literary world demands a new breed of book that not only entertains its juvenile readers, but educates them along the way. Thanks to author Sandra Jacobs, a newly-released novel satisfies both counts with vigor. Serenata mixes a time- gripping fantasy adventure with underlying lessons that will enrich its readers’ lives. In short, it provides the perfect adventure for the young reader who is always craving more. Official synopsis: There is a Golden place called SERENATA…Matthew loves exploring and desires to be one of the world’s greatest explorers. He reads about them and dreams about them. He doesn’t realize it, but his wish is about to come true. He would never
have thought his dream of being an explorer would start in the hayloft of a barn. An adventurous 10-year-old boy named Matt accidentally discovers a new friend, an alternate universe and some valuable lessons. His new friend Phil (not his real name) is a short-tempered, sarcastic control freak but also has a surprisingly soft side. Matt finds himself, though reluctantly, being the hero and is caught up in a magical place where time almost stands still. Serenata is a beautiful, fun place full of very familiar things that have become unfamiliar. There is also the dark side that Matt contends with along with his new friend and an unexpected old friend. From castles to the darkest of caves, Serenata is a place full of beauty, color and light that will continue forever and never be forgotten. Serenata is a children’s/young adult adventure story. Critics are comparing the books to the likes of The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter and the recent Arrietty releases. As the author explains, it’s a good and honest adventure with a productive undertone.

“If young people are going to read, they should learn along the way. That’s why the book has an engaging story at heart and a series of educational/life lessons in its path,” says Jacobs. She continues, “I tested the book out on friends and family. Each of them loved it; something I was delighted to hear.” Since its general release, Serenata has garnered consistent rave reviews. “I’ve read the story, and I’m the mother of three. It is a story for all ages, and keeps you wondering what is going to happen next. Good family reading. A plus,” says one reader, reviewing the book on Amazon.com. With success firmly in her hands, Jacobs plans to release more books within the same series. “This first release is volume one of Serenata. There is much more yet to come,” she concludes. Serenata, published by CreateSpace, is available now from Amazon.com. About the Author: Sandra Jacobs lives in Pelham, Alabama. With a focus on her first release, Jacobs plans to soon begin work on its sequel. Contact: Sandra Jacobs Ssjacobs06@charter.net

Students at Riverchase Middle School in the 7th grade English/Language Arts classes of Ashley Bryant and learned some valuable lessons during the month of December. As part of a lesson on the lost art of letter writing, students wrote letters to Santa Claus. They were; however, not ordinary letters to Santa because the students were not allowed to ask for tangible items. After watching, Yes, Virginia There is a Santa Claus, and discussing how the true spirit of Christmas is kindness to others, the students wrote their letters. Students asked for things such as jobs for their parents, healing of sick loved ones, soldiers to come home to their families, and peace and comfort for the families of the tragedy in Sandy Hook, CT. The letters were stamped and delivered to the Macy’s mailbox where each letter generated $1.00 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Between the two classes, over $150 was generated for this charity that grants wishes to terminally ill children.
Next, the same classes, along with the 6th grade class of Hannah Rodgers and the art classes of Katherine Phillips, made snowflakes for the Snowflake Project sponsored by the PTA at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. The snowflakes were hung in the new building that served as their school when the students returned in January. The snowflakes were hung along with a sign that showed they are from Riverchase Middle School in Pelham. The students made over 400 snowflakes to send to create the winter wonderland for the children returning to school following the tragedy. Hopefully the snowflakes represented a peaceful and happy beginning for the students. Monday, December 17th, many faculty and students wore green and white, the Sandy Hook school colors, to remember the victims of the terrible tragedy. Mrs. Haley used Remind 101, an educational based texting site, to alert her students and their parents to participate in the wearing of green and white. On December 21, the entire student body and staff of RMS joined the nation in a moment of silence to honor the children and staff killed at Sandy Hook Elementary.

RMS Students Learn it’s Better to Give Than to Receive
Finally Mrs., Haley and Mrs. Bryant challenged their students to complete twenty six acts of kindness during the holidays. Twenty six represents the number of lives lost at the school that day. Mrs. Bryant and Mrs. Haley hope it serves as a reminder of the tragedy, to make the students thankful for the lives they lead, and most of all to remember to be kind to others. The teachers began the lists by helping the students accomplish the first two. Number one
being the letters written to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and number two the snowflakes they made for the new Sandy Hook Elementary. When the RMS students returned January 3rd, they shared their lists with Mrs. Haley and Mrs. Bryant. Most of all, the teachers hope that the students learned the most valuable lessons of all— it is better to give than to receive, and that there is nothing more important in life than being kind to others.

One of several PHS softball players to earn a scholarship recently, Senior Whitney Gillespie signs above as family, coaches friends and team mates look on.
Pelham Panther center Gardner Fish joined thousands of other soon-to-be college athletes on National Signing Day, February 6, to ink his letter of intent to attend Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. NCAA Division III Williams college, a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), fields several athletic teams. The school features one of the strangest mascots you are likely to encounter—a Purple Cow called “Ephraim” (supposedly named for the school’s founder, Colonel Ephraim Williams). The team’s nickname is the Ephs (rhymes with chiefs). Get a load of those udders! Makes you wonder just a bit about the colonel, doesn’t it? When the 6'4" well-spoken athlete came to the podium, he thanked God, his parents, Brad and Karen, sister Avery, his grandparents, coaches and teammates. Gardner said the recruiting began his sophomore year, but really picked up his junior season. He said his top priority when visiting colleges and universities was to choose one where he could receive the best education possible. Although Gardener and his parents began visiting Ivy League schools, Gardner said as soon as he visited Williams College he knew it was the place for him. “You know liberal arts schools offer the best education,” Gardner concluded. Evidently Gardner knows that of which he speaks. Forbes ranked Williams College (a private liberal arts school) as the best undergraduate institution in the US—ahead of Amherst, Swarthmore, and every Ivy League university in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Head football coach Brett Burnett praised Gardner’s outstanding character and his parents for doing such a great job of molding him into the young man he is today. “He is the finest young man I’ve ever had the pleasure to coach,” Coach Burnett concluded. High praise from an experienced coach such as our head man. All the best to Gardner in all his future endeavors. Whenever we see a purple cow, we’ll be sure to say, “Go Ephs!”
