August 2011 From Superintendent Keith L. Meyer . . . Welcome to another year in the Helena Public Schools! As the Interim Superintendent, I am honored to continue my 30+ years of district service in this new position. Bruce Messinger and I worked closely together during the last 14 years – you can expect the continuation of commitment and excellence during 2011-2012. This year’s calendar is highlighting the newly revised and adopted Health Enhancement Curriculum, K-12. This curriculum directly addresses the first principle of the Whole Child Initiative, and the guiding principles adopted by the Helena Board of Trustees.

THE WHOLE CHILD - GUIDING PRINCIPLES Each student enters school healthy and learns about and practices a healthy lifestyle. Each student learns in an intellectually challenging environment that is physically and emotionally safe for students and adults. Each student is actively engaged in learning and is connected to the school and broader community. Each student has access to personalized learning and to qualified, caring adults. Each graduate is prepared for success in college or further study and for employment in a global environment. In order for our children and young adults to flourish and succeed, they must have the understanding and information to nurture and care for their personal health. The district educators and nurses created, and the Board adopted, this

comprehensive curriculum which is “designed to motivate and assist students in maintaining and improving health-related knowledge, attitudes, skills and practices.” You may access the full curriculum document on the district website:

Great Ideas Grants: Competitive grants up to $3,000 for teachers to help make their ideas come to life; up to $40,000 per year awarded Leadership Institute: District and community leaders discussing common issues and strengthening leadership Trading Places: District and community leaders exchanging insights into issues and ideas Harrison Writing Awards: Encouraging writing and rewarding high school students for literary achievement Vigilante Academy: A financial, credit management and cyber safety class for students in high school on the day before the Vigilante Parade Great Conversations: An evening of community learning, discussion and fine dining.

The Angel Fund Together, we are changing the world one Child at a time.

Our Mission The Angel Fund is a nonprofit 501c3 Corporation helping Helena School District children with necessary school items including clothing, shoes, school supplies, backpacks, classroom materials, field trip fees and other related school items to families needing assistance. The Angel Fund also offers Montana post-secondary scholarships to deserving seniors at Capital High School, Helena High School and PAL based on academic success and financial need.

Regular visits for well child exams, dental care, vision exams, and immunization completion demonstrate the importance of establishing relationships with community providers as well as being proactive in maintaining good health.

• KEEP FIT

Regular physical activity as part of family routines makes it more likely that children will continue with this habit into adulthood. Keep it fun and vary the activities, allowing choices in selecting favorite options.

• BE A ROLE MODEL

Teaching by example is a powerful tool. Children will notice as we take steps to make healthy food choices, walk instead of ride, and limit screen time. Demonstrate the benefits of healthy habits by hiking, biking, and in general, moving in the great outdoors.

Research shows that families who eat dinner together reap benefits in a multitude of ways. One example is the increased consumption of fruits and vegetables as well as fiber and other nutrients. How much do children need? Sleep is vital to a child’s growth and development as well as overall health. Bedtime routines help to ensure a period of 10-11 hours of sleep for the school-aged child.

Creating and maintaining healthy habits as a family empowers children in their development of personal behaviors. Play together, eat together, exercise together and stay healthy together.

to quality Physical Education programs in the Helena School District.

The emphasis in Physical Education classes is skill-based and fitness-centered starting in Kindergarten and culminating in High School. Elementary, Middle School and High School programs are aligned to the national and state standards for Health Enhancement. During a child’s Elementary Physical Education experience the students learn concepts and skills needed to develop a healthy lifestyle while mastering the basics of skill development. PE is offered two times a week for 30 minutes to grades K-5.

The Helena School District Health Enhancement Curriculum assesses students using the “Fitnessgram”, an evaluation tool that uses the current standards and focuses on fitness and healthy living rather than on sport and performance. Helena Middle School Health Enhancement class is an individual fitness and wellness based physical education program. The mission of Helena Middle School PE teachers is to educate the students on the importance of lifetime activities that promote a healthy lifestyle. HMS has a variety of activities, to give the students an introduction to many activities varying in aerobic intensity to achieve maximum fitness. Cooperative learning and teamwork are emphasized. The Physical Wellness Department at C. R. Anderson Middle School requires students to take responsibility for many aspects of their physical education. Once the foundation of responsibility and social skills is laid, the primary objective of this

department is to guide young people into being physically active for a lifetime. Activity in this program consists of fitness conditioning and testing, cooperative activities, sports, games, recreational activities and team building exercises. Capital High School’s Health Enhancement program encompasses the Freshman Health Enhancement (PE 1) which is a full year program of daily class, 49 minutes per day, required for all students for graduation. The program stresses a cooperative group style with students on teams and group responsibilities determined by the team. Sophomore Health Enhancement (PE 2) which is a full year program, one semester of daily PE and one semester of Health, 49 minutes per day, required for all students for graduation. The sophomore classes at CHS are focused on fitness, individual sports, and team sports. Students use fitness testing to establish a personalized fitness plan during their health class. Helena High school freshmen have four options to satisfy their freshman PE credit. The classes are designed to help students achieve and maintain a challenging level of health related physical fitness. Fitness testing and heart rate monitors are utilized in all four class options. The options are: Weight Training Option-conditioning program design, Team Sports Option- muscle groups, personal fitness programs and Fitnessgram testing, Personal Wellness Option of fitness, personal fitness program design and FITT principle and Traditional PE-individual and team sports are the emphasis. Sophomore PE students are exposed to a variety of activities with emphasis on individual and dual activities, along with some team activities.

Healthy Students and Nutrition Helena Public Schools has taken a huge leap forward in their efforts to bring education and nutrition together. This coming 2011-2012 year, students of all grades will begin to learn how their own health is directly linked to the food choices they make. They will be able to identify the feeling of hunger and fullness. Snacking throughout the day is better for weight control than skipping meals, which ultimately leads to overeating. Students will be given the new food graphic and be able to talk about food groups and what their body will do with nutrients. As the students get older they will learn how to read the labels of their favorite foods and what a portion size actually is, and analyze food choices to develop their own healthy diet. Students will be encouraged to trade their favorite fast food, candy and soda for more healthy options like whole grains, lean meats, fresh produce and low fat milk. While students are learning about good nutrition they will also learn about food safety, food borne illnesses and proper personal hygiene.

The new Health Maintenance & Enhancement curriculum will not only prepare students to stop and think before they eat, but will also focus on the value of exercising in a healthy diet. This curriculum will support your students in creating strong life skills and better eating habits that they, in turn, can share with their friends and family.

If you see and hear something frequently on TV, in magazines, movies, and other forms of media, it starts feeling ‘normal’. People tend to behave in the way they believe is most typical and accepted by their peers. If people believe that risky behaviors, like binge drinking or smoking, are ‘normal’, they are more likely to engage in those behaviors, especially if they perceive that adults condone the activity. Those who regularly engage in high-risk activities often do so with others and therefore believe everyone does it. If bystanders believe the risky behavior is the norm, they may fear social disapproval for intervening and therefore be reluctant to try stopping the dangerous behavior. Social norms, marketing campaigns and media literacy in general have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing high risk drinking, youth initiation of tobacco, driving while intoxicated, promoting parenting practices and promoting energy conservation behaviors. By focusing on the positive norms, rather than the negative misconceptions, young people can start making healthier, more informed decisions. You can still recognize the harms of risky behavior for the few that participate, while

highlighting the positive norm for the many that don’t.

Life Management Skills Life Management Skills encompass a broad array of important and inter-related skills including decisionmaking and problem solving. All kindergarten and first grade students participate in classroom lessons from the Second Step curriculum in all elementary schools. The Second Step curriculum is comprised of these major areas: skills for learning, empathy, emotion management and problem solving. As students develop, their decisions and problems get more complex requiring higher level thinking skills. Brainstorming helps students see the vast variety of possible solutions to various scenarios. By talking through possibilities, students discuss outcomes and learn to demonstrate self-directed behavior without external rewards. HSD#1 has a clear policy that does not tolerate harassment, intimidation or bullying in any form. All children need to be safe from all kinds of physical, social or emotion harm. We teach and reinforce assertive skills so children can speak up for themselves or others and know they

can reach out to trusted adults for assistance. We are committed to addressing concerns brought forth by students, parents or staff. To effectively resolve conflicts, skills of listening, mediation and conflict resolution are taught and implemented.

From infancy, when babies begin discovering their hands and feet, and throughout elementary, middle and high school, our children are learning about their bodies and how they function, often through trial, error, and accident. Young children first learn about many of their bodily systems with the first fall from a bicycle: the sensory and nervous system tells them that the fall hurt; the muscular/ skeletal system tells that there are aches from the pulled muscles or maybe a broken arm; and the circulatory system shows them blood

from the scrape in the skin (integumentary) system. In the Helena District’s Health Enhancement Curriculum, students learn specific information appropriate to their age and grade level, from qualified and caring adults. Depending on the topic and grade, students will work with classroom teachers, registered nurses, PE instructors and coaches, counselors, librarians, and health education educators at the middle and high schools. As students learn about the wonders of their bodies and how to care for each system listed below, they will be more respectful and conscientious of nutrition, sleep, exercise, and making healthy choices.

are engaging students in rigorous and creative lessons including learning to dissect squid, building and launching rockets, and building homes for families within the community. For students who are healthy and focused, the lessons they receive from these educators will prepare them well for the next phases of their lives.

However, for students suffering from mental health issues, the anxiety of an upcoming test, thoughts of ending their lives, preoccupation with a parent who was recently incarcerated, or fear of where the family will sleep tonight can block a student’s ability to participate in even the most engaging lessons. If you have ever struggled to remain focused on a task because a headache, sore throat, or fatigue hindered your ability to focus, then you know a fraction of the struggles that students with mental health issues face on a regular basis. Current local data indicates one in four of Helena’s middle and high school students report feeling sad or hopeless everyday within the last two weeks. Many of these are the students who are unable to stay engaged in their classes. The Helena Schools support the mental health of students in a variety of ways consistent with the newly adopted health curriculum. School counselors, Comprehensive School and Community Treatment (CSCT) services; transitional school based mental health services, school nurses, Project SUCCESS Counselors, and Teen Screen services are all offered through the schools to support students’ mental health.

Sometimes mental health issues present themselves through behaviors including decreasing grades, withdrawal from friends and family, acting out at home or at school, or sadness among many other symptoms. If you are worried about your child, please contact your school to seek out support and help. These programs exist in schools for the purpose of preparing your student to be emotionally ready to participate in the exciting world of education the Helena School District has to offer.

The only foolproof approach to sexual safety, of course, is to say “no” and defer sexual activity until later in life. The good news is that in Montana more than half of all adolescents do just that. But that leaves the other half at risk — many of them engaging in unprotected sex, exposing themselves to disease and unwanted pregnancy. In Lewis and Clark County more than 100 women aged 15-19 get pregnant each year, a rate per thousand of 56.8. This is higher than the rate for Montana as a whole, which is 48.8. Teenagers account for more than a fourth of the sexually transmitted infections investigated by the Lewis and Clark CityCounty Health Department.

In today’s hypersexualized culture of internet sites, mass media entertainers, and 24/7 programming, we all must work together to prepare our children for the normal changes in their bodies. They also need our guidance and protection as they encounter the endless assault of peer pressure, media glorification of irresponsible sexuality, and advertising come-ons. Working together to ensure that Helena’s children have information, guidance and protection is the only way to create a sense of security for parents and children alike.

This ability to assess the risks in one’s home or environment and take action to prevent injury is a critical component of every child’s education. The comprehensive Helena Health Enhancement Curriculum addresses these educational needs at all grade levels and provides students with ageappropriate skills, reasoning abilities, and information to make healthy

choices and decisions as they grow and mature. Health Enhancement combines the disciplines of “health” & “physical education” into a single curriculum with its focus on health-related outcomes. Concepts learned in the classroom are reinforced in the gymnasium and vice versa. Health is essential to a quality of life and leads directly to improved learning. Health enhancement develops the skills and behaviors necessary for students to become healthy, productive citizens who take

personal responsibility for their own well-being as well as a social responsibility for the health of their community. Early initiation of healthy behaviors is a predictor of enhanced school performance as well as less risk for morbidity and premature mortality in adulthood. Health enhancement is a critical component of the educational process.

Standard 1: Students have a basic knowledge & understanding of concepts that promote comprehensive health. Standard 2: Students demonstrate competency in a variety of movement forms. DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENING CLINICS FOR PRESCHOOLERS The Helena School District holds regularly scheduled clinics to identify preschool students who may have special needs or developmental delays. Public school special education services are available to eligible children in need of special education and related services beginning on the child’s 3rd birthday. Following is the schedule of clinics.

This chart shows a sampling of Montana high school students’ responses to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey of 2009. This online survey asks questions of students in 9th through 12th grades nationwide. The areas of questioning include: • Unintentional injuries and violence • Tobacco use • Alcohol and other drug use • Sexual behaviors • Dietary behaviors • Physical Activity • Asthma Montana high school students, through this survey, have shown that some students are engaged in behaviors detrimental to their health and well-being. It is for this reason that the Helena Public Schools, with schools throughout Montana and the nation, have implemented the comprehensive health enhancement curriculum in all our schools.
