MONTANA ASTHMA PROJECT
Program Helps Improve Lives of
Kids with Asthma
by Lewis & Clark City-County Health Department Contact: Michelle Much, Asthma Project Coordinator, 457-8964 Gayle Shirley, Communications Coordinator, 457-8908
O
ne in 10 children in the United States has asthma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2007, the medical expenses associated with this chronic respiratory disease cost our nation more than $50 billion. Unfortunately, these numbers continue to rise every year. Fortunately for children with asthma in Lewis and Clark, Broadwater, and Jefferson counties, there is a program with a proven success rate that can help them control the disease rather than let it control them. During an asthma attack, the airways that carry oxygen to and from the lungs get narrow and sore, often in response to an environmental factor, or “trigger,” such as exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress, among others. People with asthma are more sensitive to these environmental factors. If the disease is left untreated or uncontrolled, the airways can be permanently damaged and the disease can become debilitating. Children have smaller airways than adults, which makes asthma especially serious for them. Children with asthma may experience wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and trouble breathing, especially early in the morning or at night. Because asthma is so common and so crippling, asthma education programs have been established throughout the United States to help children with asthma and their parents learn how to manage and control the disease so that these children can remain healthy and live an active life. In Helena, that program is administered by the Lewis and Clark CityCounty Health Department.

The Montana Asthma Project sends trained nurses into the homes of children ages 0-17 to help them and their families find ways to reduce exposure to the things that trigger asthma attacks. The program also can supply special mattress and pillow covers, medication advice, asthma educational materials and referrals to community resources.
The year-old program has already proved its effectiveness. It has: ■ reduced visits to school nurses; ■ reduced asthma symptoms; ■ reduced use of rescue inhalers; ■ increased knowledge of asthma symptoms triggered by the environment and how to mitigate those triggers; ■ improved communication and understanding between families and their physicians, teachers, landlords, and others; and ■ increased the use of asthma action plans. If you would like more information, contact Michelle Much at the Lewis & Clark CityCounty Health Department, 457-8964, or e-mail healthinfo@co.lewis-clark.mt.us.

Spring into the Market!
by Deborah Jones, RD, LN, Director of Nutrition Services at St. Peter’s Hospital
S
pring has sprung! It is time for some delicious seasonal fruits and vegetables to appear in your supermarket. Spring is when apricots, artichokes, asparagus, citrus – grapefruit, lemons, oranges, fava beans, greens, peas, radishes, rhubarb and strawberries hit their harvest peak and land in the market looking oh so delicious. These Spring fruits and vegetables are powerhouses of vitamins A and C, folate, potassium, various antioxidants and fiber which are known for their numerous roles in heart health, cancer prevention and growth. These fruits and vegetables are all low in sodium and rich in flavor and can be served raw or cooked in a variety of tasty dishes. Spring is the time to enjoy a fresh salad of beautiful greens like spinach with strawberries and a citrus spiked dressing. Following is a scone recipe I developed to use seasonal fruits and whole grain flours. ■
Strawberry Scones – Makes 8 generous servings (This recipe uses heart healthy flours with a lemon zest and strawberries. Substitute blueberries or cranberries when those fruits are in season.)
½ cup oat flour ½ cup barley flour 1 Tablespoon ground flax 3 Tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder
Combine the flours, flax, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk together to combine. Cut in the butter until it is the consistency of fine meal. Add lemon zest to the dry ingredients. Fold strawberries into flour mixture to coat the berries. Add buttermilk and stir just until combined. Spray hands with pan release spray and pat dough into an 8 inch circle ½ inch in depth. Cut into 8 wedges. Combine topping ingredients and sprinkle on top of wedges. Place wedges on sprayed baking sheet. Bake in 400 degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.
¼ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter 1 Tablespoon lemon zest ½ cup strawberries, sliced into small pieces ¾ cup low fat buttermilk For Topping: 1 Tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon lemon zest

stop stressin’ man:
The Dangers of Stress to your Health Written by Michael A Ell, MBA. Michael is the Community Education Manager for St. Peter’s Behavioral Health Unit and Associate Faculty for the University of Phoenix, School of Business.
W
e hear the word stress routinely throughout our daily conversations. Work, family, and money are just a few of many potential sources for stress. Unfortunately, we use the word to describe our emotional responses to routine challenges in our lives. Even though its meaning has developed ambiguity, prolonged exposure to stress eventually creates physical and psychiatric problems. Stress causes increased heart rate and blood pressure. When these aliments are suffered for extended periods of time, they affect our heart, lungs, hair, skin, digestive track and reproductive organs. Heart disease, diabetes and obesity are common among people exposed to perpetual stress. Susan Hemion, Psychiatric APRN at St. Peter’s Behavioral Health Unit says, “Stress is often associated with chronic mental health diseases such as anxiety and depression. Many of the patients on the (Behavioral Health Unit) experience acute stress. These mental health issues create increased risks of impulsive and dangerous behavior, including suicide”. Considering the vulnerability associated with stress, it is important to reduce it. Scheduling time for enjoyable activities is an essential first step. Hobbies help us focus our attention away from stressors and provide positive outlets for our emotions. Simple pastimes such as listening to music, watching TV, or socializing with friends can relieve stress. Heather Myers, Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist for St. Peter’s Behavioral Health Unit says, “One of the best things to reduce stress is exercise. It releases endorphins which make you happy and help you relax. We encourage all of our patients to exercise. This assists them with a variety of physical and mental health disabilities.” Although it is always a good idea to consult a physician before beginning an exercise regiment, developing a healthy habit of rigorous physical activity will control your stress levels.

the five sensations of
Fitness
by Dancing Lotus Center Healthy Body~ Calm Mind ~ Joyful Spirit
W
hen we think about fitness, what do we think about? Dancing Lotus invites you to explore sensations in your body/mind/spirit/emotions. How do the Five Sensations interact to create balance and harmony? Let’s explore the sensations of Strength, Flexibility, Mobility, Agility and Stability:
STRENGTH is sensed as
energy moving inward and has the sensation of sustaining power; it is the vibration of positive tension in the muscles. Dynamic strength is the perfect balance of power and grace, it is sensed as relaxation, not tension. Losing strength is sensed as quivering of the muscle, pain, fatigue and as a diminishment of balance, grace, speed and coordination.
The best predictor of injury is not how strong you are; it’s the quality of your movement.
FLEXIBILITY is sensed as energy moving outward and is
sensed as an elastic quality of muscles and joints. Dynamic flexibility is the perfect balance of contraction and release and is sensed as opening and lengthening. Losing flexibility is sensed as heaviness, rigidity, stiffness, cramping and fatigue.
12
sunday, april 29, 2012
MOBILITY is sensed as energy in constant motion and as a continuous energy flow and excitation of the nerves around the joints. Dynamic mobility is the perfect balance between excitation and relaxation and is sensed as youthful freedom. Losing mobility is sensed as tightness, discomfort and loss of power. AGILITY is sensed as a shifting
of dynamic tension. Agility is sensed as a feeling of pushing and pulling with the ability to easily start and stop movement. Dynamic agility is the perfect balance of movement and stillness and is sensed as a balance between yin and yang. Losing agility is sensed as a diminished response, speed and control.
STABILITY is sensed as calmness in the muscles, combined with readiness for action and is maintained by equalizing muscular contraction and relaxation. Stability is sensed as a harmony between the muscles and joints. Dynamic stability is the perfect balance of opposites and is sensed as powerful peace. Losing

stability is sensed as weakness and a loss of balance and support. The integration and enhancement of all these sensations creates a sense of well-being, health, relaxation and joy in the body/mind/spirit/emotions. when weight loss surgery
IS THE ONLY OPTION
W
by Benefis Bariatric Institute
ith the New Year come thoughts of losing weight. And for the more than 60 million obese people living in the U.S., weight loss oftentimes seems impossible. When diet and exercise have failed, and a person’s health is on the line, weight loss surgery can be successful. People considering weight loss surgery, also called bariatric surgery, are often at the end of their rope. Traditional methods of diet, exercise and medication have been ineffective, and weight loss surgery is a last resort. But it’s a big leap to go from thinking about surgery to getting on the operating table. A successful outcome begins with good planning, preparation and follow-up with an expert team of healthcare professionals. Preparing for weight loss surgery means taking into consideration the benefits as well as the risks of the surgery itself. After all, any operation carries some risk, and can cause a great deal of anxiety. You should be physically and mentally ready. Most of all, you should be committed to permanently changing your lifestyle and keeping the weight off to ensure a healthier life. Deciding to get weight loss surgery isn’t easy. And after making the decision to do it, there are still many different procedures to choose from. The best one for you depends on a lot of things: your goals, your surgeon’s preference, your current health, and of course, which procedure is covered by your insurance. Choosing a specific surgical approach will require a lot of thought and discussion with your doctor. A general overview of the surgical approaches your doctor might recommend include:
Adjustable gastric banding. Among the least invasive of weight loss treatments, gastric banding uses an inflatable band to squeeze the stomach into two section: a small pouch and larger lower section. The two sections are still connected; it’s just the channel between them is very small, which slows down the emptying of the upper pouch. Gastric banding physically restricts the amount of food you can take in at a meal.
Gastric sleeve (or sleeve gastrectomy). This is a
relatively new form of restrictive weight loss surgery. Usually done laparoscopically, about 75% of the stomach is removed. What remains of the stomach is a narrow tube or sleeve, which connects to the intestine. Usually, the sleeve gastrectomy is a first step in a sequence of weight loss surgeries. It’s usually followed up by gastric bypass, which will result in greater weight loss. However, in some cases, it might be the only surgery needed.
14
sunday, april 29, 2012
Gastric bypass surgery (or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass). The most common type of weight loss surgery, the
gastric bypass makes up about 80% of all weight loss surgeries in the U.S. In the operation, the surgeon divides the stomach into two parts, sealing off the upper section from the lower. The surgeon then connects the upper stomach directly to the lower section of the small intestine. Essentially, the surgeon is creating a shortcut fro the food, bypassing a section of the stomach and the small intestine. Skipping these parts of the digestive tract means that the body absorbs fewer calories.
Weight loss surgery is not for everyone. It is recommended for people who: ■ Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more. This would be about 100 pounds overweight for men or 80 pounds for women. ■ Have a serious health problem related to obesity, like heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea or high cholesterol. ■ Have tried and failed to lose weight by other means. ■ Fully understand the risks. If you are suffering from serious health risks often associated with obesity, talk with your doctor to see if weightloss surgery can help you. Find a comprehensive surgical weight-loss program that provides pre-surgical counseling, post-op nutrition and support. Getting the care you need every step of the way will provide you a healthier, longer life. ■

play
IS A POWERFUL PROMOTER OF FAMILY HEALTH AND WELL-BEING by David Smith, CEO Helena Family YMCA
I
n today’s goal-oriented society, the notion of play can seem a frivolous pursuit for those past primary school age. Physical activity is often perceived as athletics, exercise or “working out.” But, experts agree, play can and should be embraced by family members of all ages. Over scheduled and stressed families can become so programmed to think in terms of achievements like earning more money, making a select soccer or swim team, or getting good grades. Instead of embracing play as a vital part of family life, it is sometimes viewed as a non-productive “waste” of time. But nothing could be further from the truth. Families can develop stronger bonds when they share common experiences. Physical activity is a positive experience that families can share as they improve their overall health. Kids and parents who play in a physically active way are healthier and happier. Studies suggest playing, just for the sake of movement and enjoyment and interaction, boots self-esteem, builds healthy relationships and contributes to a physical health and well-being.
■ Create a play jar allowing each family member to put in desired fun activities for weekends or other days off. Turn chore time into play time. Crank up the stereo for a Saturday clean the house party. The Helena Family YMCA provides tools and support for families who are ready to take a positive step in living a healthier, happier life. Join us on April 28 for our Healthy Kids Day – bring your kids for a free day of fun and games, in the name of better health. For more information and free resources for families visit www.helenaymca.org. ■
Play is like fruits and vegetables, an everyday necessity, not a candy or ice cream treat for every once in a while. Families who recognize the power of play will improve in all of those other areas of achievement. The Helena Family YMCA offers these easy tips to make play part of every day and an important component of healthy families.
■ Spend at least 20 minutes doing something physically active as a family, ideally outdoors. Play fetch with the dog, a game of tag before dinner, play in the leaves or build a snowman before starting homework (not unusual in May in Montana!), play “chase” in the house, play “horse” with little ones. Take a family bike ride to the bank or post office. ■ Schedule family recess time by putting play on the weekly
schedule, just like soccer games and piano practice. Block out time for a trip to the park playground or a family trip to the pool. Shoot hoops, jump rope, play hopscotch in the driveway.
■ Count each effort no matter how large or small. Take quick breaks between chores, meal preparation, and homework to dance or run around the house.

da Vinci® Hysterectomy by Benefis Health System Learn more about surgery with da Vinci®, visit our website at www.benefis.org
A
bout 600,000 hysterectomies are performed each year in the United States with 37 percent of all women having one by age 60. Until recently, surgery for most gynecologic conditions was performed using a large abdominal incision. This is because while traditional laparoscopic surgery is effective for many routine procedures, the long-handled, rigid instruments used in laparoscopy are not usually considered effective for delicate or complex operations. Fortunately, there is a minimally invasive option for treating gynecologic conditions designed to overcome the limits of traditional open and laparoscopic surgery – da Vinci Surgery.
The da Vinci System is a state-of-the-art surgical platform with 3D, high-definition vision and miniaturized, wristed surgical instruments designed to help doctors take surgery beyond the limits of the human hand. By helping doctors to overcome the challenges of traditional open and laparoscopic surgery, da Vinci is changing the experience of surgery for women around the world. If you have been told you need a hysterectomy, it’s time to ask your doctor about da Vinci Surgery. Learn why da Vinci Hysterectomy may be your best treatment option. ■
If your doctor recommends a hysterectomy to treat your condition, you may be a candidate for da Vinci Surgery. Using state-of-the-art technology, a da Vinci® Hysterectomy requires only a few tiny incisions, so you can get back to your life faster. The da Vinci System enables your doctor to perform a minimally invasive hysterectomy even for complex conditions — with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control. da Vinci Hysterectomy offers women many potential benefits over traditional surgery, including:
■ Less pain. ■ Fewer complications. ■ Less blood loss. ■ Shorter hospital stay. ■ Low risk of wound infection. ■ Quicker recovery and return to normal activities.

Allergy Season!
by Dr. David DeMey, DC Trilogy Chiropractic and Wellness Center
S
neezing, wheezing, coughing and itching are commonly considered symptoms of allergies, but joint stiffness, sluggishness, headaches, alternating constipation and diarrhea – these symptoms and others can also be signs of an “allergic reaction,” a “sensitivity,” or an “intolerance” to something entering your body. It is important understand how the body works and what you can do to help yourself, your family, friends and coworkers with their symptoms of allergies, without medications, the natural way!
The skin is the most important part of the immune system. The skin protects us from the outside world. We also have a special “skin” that protects us from our inside world, which is the mucus membrane. This moist tissue covers the inside of your mouth, throat, stomach and intestines. It also lines your nasal passages and lungs. The purpose of these highly specialized tissues is to protect your body from foreign substances. Allergic reactions begin when substances enter through your nose, lungs, skin or intestines. People commonly think of pollen and foods. They can also come from synthetic environmental chemicals, drinks or foods.
Regardless of the source, all allergic reactions are a response by your body to foreign substances. The body responds by sending antibodies to the rescue. Antibodies are an important part of the body’s natural defense system and are produced normally by our white blood cells to help fight infection or toxins. This is a great design! A body can become overly sensitive (allergic) to common foods when poor digestive function sends partially digested foods through the intestines for absorption. The mucus membrane lining your intestine is supposed to absorb the good
20
sunday, april 29, 2012
nutrients and keep out the rest. If that lining is unhealthy and “leaky,” allergic reactions occur. That’s because the “leaky” state of the intestines allows large protein particles from partially digested foods to be absorbed into the blood stream. These particles are recognized as “foreign” by the immune system. Similarly, chemicals in our environment challenge our immune system by irritating mucus membranes in the nose and lungs, making them “leak,” thus allowing these foreign substances to enter. Additionally, poor quality food, poor digestion, and unbalanced bowel flora contribute to nutritional deficiencies. A nutritionally deficient body cannot build and maintain healthy tissues, including the skin and mucus membranes that form protective barriers. In our world, full of pollution, synthetic foods, and chemicals of all types, our immune systems are challenged constantly, and we often become overly sensitive to common substances. Such a constant demand on the immune system can result from and cause nutritional deficiencies, creating a vicious cycle, eventually leading to immune system exhaustion.
Should I use anti-histamines when I feel allergic symptoms? Histamine is involved in myriad physiological conditions, all with the goal of supporting healing. When antibodies bind with foreign substances, histamine is released to begin a process of flooding the irritated tissue with healing fluids. This inflammatory reaction can be quite uncomfortable, but is a necessary part of the healing process. One does not want to inactivate histamine, although it is best to clear the histamine from our tissues after it has done its job. Drug forms of antihistamine may interfere with the healing aspects of histamine, and frequently have side effects. More importantly, these drugs may be avoided by supporting normal body processes. What we need is a natural product that helps the body handle the histamine reaction, relieve symptoms, and support healing.

gardening tips
to avoid injury and discomfort
I
t's that time of year again when you can dig your hands into the dirt, spread seeds over the freshly turned earth, and smell the delicious scent of green plants growing.
Gardening is very healthy, both physically and mentally. In addition to providing exercise, gardening delivers health benefits in the fresh foods you eat and in the calming presence of flowers in your environment. To get the most out of gardening's health benefits, it's a good idea to do a bit of stretching to help avoid injury or irritating existing conditions while out in the garden. Here are some tips to stay healthy:
■ STRETCH THOSE MUSCLES Heading out into the garden is just like going for a jog or visiting the gym. Before you grab all your gardening tools, practice some full-body stretches to warm up your muscles. Target your arms, legs and back, because the muscles in these areas will be put to good use while you're planting, weeding and watering. And before you finish for the day, do some more stretching to help loosen any muscles that tightened during your gardening work.
■ BANISH BENDING Many Americans suffer from chronic back pain, which can put a damper on the gardening experience. Consider installing raised garden beds, which allow you to garden without have to bend over. And container gardens can be placed on tables or deck railings to make it easy to reach plants.
■ HAND AND WRIST PROTECTION A MUST Weeding, hoeing, raking, shoveling - the repetitive motions of gardening can lead to hand and wrist pain, and worsen existing conditions such as arthritis. Taking steps to minimize irritation and discomfort while you work can help ensure your gardening tasks don't create aches or worsen pain. Consider wearing an arthritis glove, like the Imak-made glove commended by the Arthritis Foundation, to provide mild compression and warmth while you work. Because the gloves are made of cotton material with an open-fingertip design, they won't make your hands hot or hinder movement. Designed by an orthopedic surgeon, the arthritis gloves are also fully

washable, so you don't have to worry about getting a little dirt on them as you go about your gardening tasks. An added bonus - wearing any kind of glove can help you avoid another common gardening injury: blisters.
■ KEEP SKIN PROTECTED Because gardening keeps a person outdoors a lot during the warm, summer months, it's important to protect your skin from insect bites and sunburn. While most insect bites are just an irritation, sunburn can cause serious, long-term skin damage. Use insect repellent and sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Also wear a wide-brimmed, lightweight hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes and keep the sun off your head.
■ LIFT CAREFULLY Between the heavy bags of soil, the many tools needed, or full baskets of vegetables being carried into the kitchen for processing, lifting is a common labor when gardening. Remember to lift from a squatting position, with your back straight, so that your legs do the work, not your back. When kneeling down, use gardening knee pads or even just a rolled up towel to cushion your joints from the hard, damp ground. Remember to minimize twisting motions that can inure your back and joints. Enjoy the healthful benefits of gardening this summer. Follow these simple precautions to keep safe and injury-free so you can play in your garden until the snow falls. ■

by Kari Parmer, MSN, RN, Breast Care Navigator, and Dr. Maria Braman
S
t. Peter’s Women’s Health Institute (WHI) offers a team approach to women’s health care. Medical professionals partner with women to make their choices simpler and keep them more informed. The WHI was designed as a collaborative organization comprised of St. Peter’s Hospital and aligned members of its medical staff dedicated to developing and promoting coordinated, multi-disciplinary clinical programs tied to important women’s health issues. There are currently two sponsored programs within the WHI, the Breast Program and the Pelvic Relaxation and Urinary Incontinence (PRI) Program.
The PRI program was established to address the unmet medical needs of approximately 45% of post menopausal women who experience incontinence conditions. St. Peter’s wants women to know they don’t have to live with this discomfort and difficulty. There are numerous options that include noninvasive as well as surgical treatments. The PRI program at St. Peter’s is equipped to assist in finding the right option. For information about St. Peter’s WHI programs, please contact the Nurse Navigator at 406-495-6780. ■
The Breast Program is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. The Breast Care program involves a coordinated multi-disciplinary team approach to treatment options and care coordination. Integral to the program is ongoing quality monitoring that ensures that patient services, clinical pathways and outcomes are consistent with national standards. The seamless navigation of clinical care is assisted by Kari Parmer, the Nurse Navigator for the breast program. Parmer is also a leader in educating the community as well as individual women who have breast health questions or concerns. She guides women through their clinical and diagnostic evaluation of any breast abnormalities or concerns. In the event of a breast cancer diagnosis, Parmer assists patients in understanding recommendations made by their physicians. She also helps patients navigate the health care system and connect them to resources to aid in their journey.

Circuit Training And Interval Training… A Breakthrough in Fitness by Jolene Fuzesy, Co- Owner of Lift for Life Fitness, LLC
C
ircuit Training and Interval Training are two forms of exercising that seem to have common themes; more effective fat burn, increased strength and cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, time effective, and much more! When done properly, circuit training builds lean muscles and improves aerobic fitness simultaneously, making it nothing less than the most effective fat-burning workout. Circuit Training is performing a series of selected exercises or activities in sequence as rapidly as possible. This allows you to achieve the benefits of a systemic aerobic workout while also doing a continuous series of anaerobic exercises. While performing circuit training you are doing more exercises in the same amount of time. Circuit training keeps the pulse high and promotes overall fitness by working all muscle groups as well as the heart and lungs. Circuit training improves your overall body tone, burns more calories throughout the day and improves your metabolism. Typically, circuit training programs have between six and twelve stations focusing on total body conditioning. A complete workout consists of two to three sets of each circuit. Depending on the program, you may be required to complete a specific number of exercises or for a specified period of time. The break between the sets is shorts, usually 15 to 30 seconds. However, any individual can vary the circuit training program to ensure it meets their fitness needs. Some variations can include changing the number of circuits performed, increase or decrease the length of intervals
between circuits, change time spent at each station, vary the intensity and speed of each activity, or change rest periods between each exercise. Interval training is short, high-intensity cardio exercise (using 90 to 100 percent of max heart rate) alternated with longer periods of lower-intensity cardio (70 to 80 percent of max heart rate). Interval training allows you burn more calories, increase your speed, improve your strength and power and much more. Studies have shown interval training to be more effective at burning fat while maintaining muscle mass compared with long-duration, low-intensity workouts. Additionally, during strenuous exercise, metabolic rate rises, increasing to about 15 times the basal metabolic rate and even higher during intense interval work. This is due to the fact that interval work utilizes a greater percent of the body’s muscles. Performing high-intensity work places added energy demands on the respiratory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems. More fat and glycogen are burned to support the expanding energy demands of the body during, and after intense exercise. An example of interval training is to sprint for 20 seconds and walk/jog for 30 seconds, repeated six to ten times. Like Circuit training there are many variations to this type of training. Some variations will include intensity, rest periods, work periods, sets, and time. So the next time you feel like you don’t have enough time to get an effective, high intense workout in, think again. Interval Training and Circuit Training might just be what you are looking for. ■
