Dive into the story of the iron throne…
Game of Thrones is a TV show following the series of fantasy novels named ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ written by American novelist George R.R. Martin. The story takes place in Westeros, a fantasy land where except humans, other mysterious creatures can be found roaming the lands. The plotline follows the Seven Kingdoms that get into rebellion after the death of the King, each of them now fighting to sit on the Iron Throne. While the Throne brings death to anyone who sits on it, there is another danger coming from Beyond the Wall. The series has been adapted into a TV show by HBO and season 1 started filming in 2010. The season 1 of Game of Thrones has attracted many science fiction and mystery lovers. Although the pilot episode seemed like a failure, the number of fans has only been in growth ever since the first season aired (Game of Thrones Wiki, 2017). Game of Thrones has thus created a strong and growing fan base of young adults and adults between the age of 18 and 30, who are fans of fiction, magic, mystery and medieval times. The series production has brought inflation in tourist numbers, in every location used for filming purposes, as recorded by local governments. The series does indeed show wonderful scenery that attracts young and wanderlust people and lovers of the show to visit the locations and experience the TV series in real life.
Croatia has been a home to HBO’s production ever since Season 2 and still continues to house the set in various locations along the coast.

DAY ONE Our Day One starts with arrival to Cilipi Airport just outside Dubrovnik where a coach will be waiting to take you to your hotel that is just in the heart of the old town. Once you walk through the Pile gate, you are basically walking the streets of King’s Landing. Where ever you go - the city walls, the Stradun, the Sponza Palace – it has all been used in the series. If you visit the Baroque Staircase, you can recognise you are standing right in front of the stairs to the Great Sept of Baelor. However, the background is slightly different than the one in the series, since the Great Sept does not actually exist in real life. But the staircase is a story on its own. Just remember that Cercei was walking those stairs and now standing on them, you can be the rightful King or Queen of Westeros. By the end of the day, we are making our way towards Trsteno and the Gardens of King’s Landing. You can enjoy the beautiful sunset, sipping on tea and imagining you are standing in the Gardens of King’s Landing!

Day two
Our Day Two is a trip to Qarth, situated on the little island of Lokrum just outside Dubrovnik. Lokrum is a hidden little place in the nature that resembles Qarth in real life. Walking down the monastery definitely feels like following Khaleesi and her dragons on their way to win the Iron Throne. Speaking of, there is an actual replica of the Iron Throne in Lokrum, meaning you can rule Westeros for a whole day. Or at least until it is time to go back to Dubrovnik. But do not be sad, there is another surprise waiting once you are back within the Walls of the Old Town. We have made sure to organise a Game of Thrones themed dinner that is serving actual food from the series. We are also providing the theme-appropriate clothes to make the experience more real.

DAY THREE On day three we will be visiting Split, Klis and Trogir. In the early morning, we will leave Dubrovnik and make our way up north. After checking into a hotel in the heart of Diocletian’s Palace, it is time to continue our Game of Thrones Adventure. The basement of Diocletian’s Palace in Split is used as Daenerys’ throne room and dragon keep. The scenery in the series does not differ much from the real monument, so you can instantly recognise the thick walls and dark underground where Dany keeps her dragons, as soon as you walk in. Some of the streets of the Palace, that’s under UNESCO’s protected heritage sites, were used in filming the slave rebellion scenes. Moving on, the Fortress of Klis that was used as Mereen, is a majestic building on the top of the mountain and for the purpose of the series, the wooden construction was built upon the ruins. However, when you take off the special effect of the series, the ruins still keep their recognisable shape and you can certainly imagine yourself standing alongside Daenerys, overlooking her kingdom.

DAY FOUR Day four is our last day of the Game of Thrones adventure. After checking out of our hotel, we will slowly make our way even northern – according to the map of Croatia. Today, we will be visiting the city of Braavos. Braavos is placed in Kastel Gomilica. The resemblance of the town and the city in the series is uncanny! Just walking across the bridge feels like you are walking into a modern day Braavos. Moving on, we arrive to Sibenik. Its wonderful cathedral was used as a model to build the bank of Braavos. However, if you are not aware of it, it is easy to miss this little fact, considering the only thing that the series uses from the cathedral are the doors. So taking the effect off, we are actually left with much smaller building that expected – and much different too!
After our four-day fantasy adventure, it is time to go back to reality. But you are welcome to visit again, any time! We are sure you will be coming back.
