Taste buds Create a product solution for astronaut to improve daily eating experience .

Introduction

Type

My role

This is a Polimi's project coroparated with European Space Agency and State University of New York. To design a creative product solution for astronaut in microgravity environment, then developed a everyday used solution that can be used on the earth as well.

Group work

Research, Ideation, Rendering (Pic+Video)

Our concept is a set of caps to put on the straws astronauts use on the International Space Station. Each cap provide a different feeling and help to stimulate a different kind of Taste Buds, in order to provide a different level of stimulation and the most customizable experience possible.

Design Challenge - Design a "space object" which is inspired by space scenarios and designed for astronauts, with extensions to spin-offs for our daily life on earth & merchandising.

- Working in an international environment, collaborated with FIT students in the US (a different time zone) based on multidisciplinarity.

Design Process

Desk research: - Daily activities - Astronauts' gestures - Differences with earth - Others

- IVA in microgravity - EVA in microgravity - EVA in reduced gravity

Project - 3d space object (Polimi) - packaging of 3d space object (FIT)

Outputs - model of the project 3d printed - 3 min video

What is the context of International Space Station (ISS)?

Use & Gestures of tools

At the beginning of the project, we were trying to understand the context better from the below astronaut's daily activities, the tools they used to find the design opportunities.

The microgravity environment

What is a astronaut's daily routine?

1. Wake up Astronauts need to sleep in their own sleeping bag. They wake up with the 'alarm', the noises and oxgyen starvation.

Food & packages The food on the ISS requires package with light-weight, compact, tasty and nutritions. They need to be keep for a long time without refrigeration. Different type of menu with foods required to provide each astronaut 2500 calories a day.

2. Hygiene To clean themselves, the best way to clean is using a damp cloth.

First meal in space "Friendship 7" (1962)

- Aluminum tube - Pureed food

7. Entertainment

Closed space

The astronauts do all these things in a closed context with microgravity: working, eating, sleeping and exercises and so on. This also brings them more challenges.

Encephalemia

For example, we found that encephalemia, condition that makes astronauts feel sick and can influence the astronauts’ eating habits, due a loss of sensibility of the taste buds.

2.5 hours for fitness time

On average, astronauts do exerercises for two and a half hours to keep healthy. It is very important to help them to avoid weakness on the ISS.

The end of a day is the time for astronauts watch DVDs, books, and so on to relax.

6. Exercising A few hours of daily exercise helps to keep some tone in muscles that would otherwise see little use.

The daily routine is more difficult compared with with earth. The enough calorines and energies is necessary.

5. Working Astronauts settle down to the assigned tasks of the day, either supervising experiments or performing routine maintenance on station equipment.

- Need to use with straw - Not tasty

Beef and Vegetables "Friendship 7" 3. Eating 1900 to 3200 calories per day depending on the gender and weight of the astronaut.

- Directly squeeze - Need to use with straw

First Freeze-Dried Space Food "Project Gemini" - Dehydrated, freeze-dried - Coated with gelatin or oil to prevent foods

4. Using toielts The toilet on the ISS is very different with the toilet on the earth. They do not use water.

Apollo Program Food - Hot water gun - Food restraint pouch - Thermo-stablized turkey and gravy

1

The lack of taste under Microgravity Environment The Microgravity environment can influence astronauts body in many ways. In this situation, we found that the astronaut's ablility to taste food has been decreased compared they eating on the earth.

2

Enough energy import to support long fitness time Instead of daily works, to keep heathy the astronauts need to do exercises in the ISS for average 3 hours. As a result, the enough food every day can ensure the necessary energies for astronauts.

3

Space food packege is different from the earth Due to the limited space, the food has a higher require for the storage. Even though there's alrealdy improved on the variety of foods, the package is still different from the earth.

The aim of our product is the stimulation of the astronauts’ taste buds to make them appreciate food more.

3D printable on the ISS No electrical component No new impediments

Material analyze

We compared the different 3D printing materials can be used on the ISS environment, to select the proper material from the durability, chemical resistance, heat resistance, strength ad softness sectors. We decided to use TPU for the our product.

Concept validation

After the concept development phase, we were trying to test our idea. The prototype is one of the important we used to test our concept, by using 3D printing technology, we do the validation on our product. To test the dimension, the color and the likelyhood of the customized experience on the earth.

Customized experience

To think innovatively of our product on the earth, we use the strategy of customized experience to provide multiple choices of our customer. By the combination of two parts of the straw, to fullfilled the multipe choices.

Denture care is as important as our teeth, for certain reasons, people who wear it have low awareness and habit to care about it in some extent. Under the situation, people are not satisfied with products cleaning effeicient at present, there is a high demand for raleted situation on professional area.

Beside the horrible test or treatment experience, for foreigners, they need to suffer more, like the language barrier, no clue about where they should go. Or what is the fair price, etc.

Hello, I am a product designer who is currently study Integrated Product Design in Politecnico di Milano. And I received a bachelor degree of Product design from Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi'an, China in 2018. Over the years, my experience both in school project and internship, allows me to have chance to think, to experiment, and to discover. I also like extracting design inspiration from life's details, I have been visiting to Italy, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Switzerland and many other countries. I have a great passion for all the interesting things and always look for new opportunities for the challenge from all daily life. The years of study and practical experience allows me to have the ability to adapt to the environment and learning new things. I truly believe that good design is a combination of both functional and emotional aspect. I treated every work seriously just because the design is a whole life thing for me. JIEZHEN HAN :)
