Work experience

The importance of work experience We would strongly advise you get some industry experience alongside your course so that you can have a balance of both academic and practical skills. If you have a placement as part of your course this industry experience will give you transferrable employability skills. Gaining experience is also a great opportunity to get UK references that you can take home along with your certificates. Some fantastic ways of gaining industry experience would be: • Getting a part-time casual job alongside your studies • Applying for a summer internship or program • Volunteer roles How many hours can I work? If you are from a non-EEA country, your current visa will state whether you have permission to work alongside your studies with any restrictions you may have during your stay in the UK as a student.

Working after study

Working after your studies Due to the Post Study Worker visa no longer being available, there are other routes into employment which you could consider. Tier 1

Graduate Entrepreneur Here you will need to have your business idea endorsed by a UK institution, and as of 6 April 2014 it needn’t be from the college or university where you studied. Up to 100 graduates of institutions in other countries can also apply under this route, endorsed by UK Trade and Investment. In 2013, around 1,600 students were granted permission to stay in the UK under Tier 1 (Entrepreneur), Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) and Tier 1 (Investor).

10

Tier 2

General Is the main route if you would like to take up employment. The lowest wage for this scheme is £20,500, but this depends on the job and can be higher. In most cases, employers are not required to show that they advertised the job and that no one else could do it (resident labour market test) before they can offer it to you. In 2013, 4,175 students were granted leave to stay in the UK under Tier 2.

Tier 5

Temporary Worker This is a government authorised exchange for people coming to the United Kingdom through approved schemes that aim to share knowledge, experience and best practice. The above details were taken from the UKCISA website. For more information and to meet with various sponsorship organisations, be sure to attend the ‘Develop your global career’ event on the opposite page.
