BRANDING GUIDE
DESIGN & brand guidelines Colours
PANTONE ORANGE 021 U (CMYK VALUE = 0,53,100,0) LOGO RED WITH 20% BLACK ADDED (CMYK VALUE = 0,94,84,20) PANTONE RHODAMINE RED U (CMYK VALUE = 3,89,0,0) PANTONE 259 U (CMYK VALUE = 55,100,0,15) PANTONE PROCESS BLUE U (CMYK VALUE = 100,10,0,10) PANTONE 562 U (CMYK VALUE = 85,0,50,31) PANTONE 347 U (CMYK VALUE = 100,0,86,3) PANTONE COOL GRAY 9 U (CMYK VALUE = 0,1,0,51) RICH BLACK (CMYK VALUE =70,50,30,100)
PLEASE NOTE: The colours can be used on a variety of artists, as long as they are limited to one colour per artist, to keep design clean and classic. These colours are set in PANTONE so they can be used if a spot colour needs to be used for future printing, they are set in Ink Manager to convert to process colours in InDesign. The colours should be used in above order throughout brochures to compliment colours sitting next to each other (exceptions if colour doesn't work with image, black or grey can sit in between and some colours can be missed out if conflicting with image). Rich black can be used for large blocks of black to allow for uncoated paper stock (not on body copy).
Logo USAGE The logo should be kept the same size on all brochure covers, different colour variations of logo can be used, white on black, full colour and black versions. The size can be reduced for intro pages and advertisements and inside marketing items. (Do not reduce logo more then 40mm in width, preferably keep at the size featured below). Logo can be placed on full colour or mono images, for example on Flyer cover image, but only on a plain part of an image. Logo should always be on clean clear background to be seen and print clearly. The logo should never be more then 60mm in width (logo is then too large). Please see below.
Cover size for logo on all branding.
Intro and advert logo size and use of smaller sized logo.
Please note: the logo should align with end of picture or text box. Logo needs 3mm of space left around area of logo. With covers using slant top on image, the logo should sit at top right with alignment to edge of image, or at left alignment of slant depending on design used. Please see examples of this on pages 13-15. This should not sit at bottom if cover has a slant on image (logo is designed to sit at top right/left of slant). The logo should also be given the space of half the character height of the Intermusica ‘e’ , approx 3mm space left all round.
Approximately 3mm space all round

STYLES There are paragraph and character styles set up for each brochure, flyer and highlights templates etc. There are character styles and nested paragraph styles to use in some instances, they are set up in groups relating to various pages within the template/InDesign file. See character styles in groups below as example.

BRANDING GUIDE
Vertical scale on all headers and titles Myriad is the only font family used for Intermusica branding. All large headers and titles have a 90% vertical scale added to reduce the height of the characters. At 100% they look stretched in this font.

BRANDING GUIDE
SHAPES & IMAGES IMAGES - Intermusica sources the best and most high-impact photography and images available, whether from project partners, artists’ photoshoots or image libraries such as Getty Images. An important message in Intermusica’s visual language is that it does not compromise on quality or style. 300dpi CMYK for print work. SHAPES - When using coloured shapes, the diamond shape is used to compliment images, and colour border/ shapes gives colour and dynamism to design. The shape design tends to stem from the diamond - using colours from the palette, often used with black or white backgrounds. There are two versions of this, one with overlaps and one sold diamond shape. (See below). If photos are used next to each other, especially with bleed images, they need to be complimentary where possible. The shapes are used in uniform throughout inside brochure page designs, see right of page. (Shapes used and use of divider shapes alternating in colour palette). Photos can be used in different shapes for cover designs, like the diamond shape design used for Instrumentalists. Different shaped image boxes can be used with the design to give more impact when using lots of images together for example.

“Biss has that perfectly natural, yet immediately communicative presence granted to few artists. When he plays, it is to the accompaniment of absolute silence in the room, the rapt attention that audiences pay to only the best music-making.” Washington Post
“...she possesses effortless and brilliant technique... Her phrasing was beautifully shaped, but also deeply interior, as if she were oblivious to the audience in the hall. She attacked the finale with lightning quick articulation that sparkled and was never steely.” Cincinnati Enquirer
Jonathan Biss is recognised as one of the great Classical and early Romantic pianists both in the USA and Europe. He has also established a reputation as a writer and thinker of considerable depth and has written two essays as Kindle Singles. Beethoven’s Shadow became a top-selling music e-book in the USA and the UK, while A Pianist Under the Influence accompanied the recital and chamber music series ‘Schumann: Under the Influence’, which he curated for London’s Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, San Francisco Performances and Carnegie Hall.

TABS USED IN ARTWORK The colour tabs that run down the left hand side of the page in various marketing materials can be used in different ways. For example in the Artist List they are used as section headers and in the brochures they are used as colour dividers to distinguish between the pages of artists. See examples of use of tabs below.

“Midori played with such soft-grained lustre and delicate inflection that the sound itself seemed almost disembodied… I have rarely heard the sognando (dreamy) quality of this exotic, sun-kissed, music so sensuously addressed.” Independent Midori performs at the highest level worldwide. She has also been recognised by the United Nations and the World Economic Forum for her exceptional commitment to education and community engagement throughout the USA, Europe, Asia and the developing world. More recently, Midori has been making a sustained commitment to the violin repertoire of the future, commissioning several new concerto and recital works. BRANDING GUIDE
BROCHURE DESIGN Composer brochure design The brochures all use shapes and colours behind the image (see shapes section for reference), this design gives a modern feel to the branding. The background coloured shapes are created in illustrator and some colours overlap to create depth within the design with use of transparency. When designing covers, the illustrator files sit at the back in the InDesign document and there is a picture box for the colour photograph to sit on top. This needs to sit exactly as positioned for the Composer Performers as pictured below. The next version of Composer Performers can then just change the image each time.

Brett Dean (born 1961) studied in Brisbane before moving to Germany in 1984 where he was a permanent member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for fourteen years. Dean returned to his native Australia in 2000 to concentrate on his growing compositional activities. Now one of the most internationally performed composers of his generation, much of Dean’s work draws from literary, political or visual stimuli and he is a composer of vivid, colourful, intelligently expressive music. Brett Dean won the 2009 Grawemeyer Award for music composition for his violin concerto The Lost Art of Letter Writing and received the Elise L. Stoeger Prize from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Centre, New York, in 2011. intermusica.co.uk/dean

After the enormous success of the Beethoven symphony cycle residencies with Riccardo Chailly at Barbican Centre, London, and Salle Pleyel, Paris, in autumn 2011 (in conjunction with a Decca Classics release), we continue to deepen our relationship with this historic ensemble. In September 2012, the orchestra returns to the BBC Proms to perform Mendelssohn, Messiaen and Mahler over two concerts. This is followed by future tours throughout Europe and Asia. “Riccardo Chailly’s Barbican Beethoven cycle with his storied Leipzig orchestra has been one of the musical pinnacles of the year.” Martin Kettle, The Guardian

LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA – PARIS RESIDENCY
6
Launched in 2006, the London Symphony Orchestra’s international residency at Salle Pleyel, Paris, continues to thrive. It has featured an array of notable artists such as Sir Colin Davis, Bernard Haitink, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Maria-João Pirès and Vadim Repin, among others. Projects have included a three-year Beethoven cycle, two-part Prokofiev
series and Gergiev’s acclaimed Mahler cycle, in collaboration with the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre. The residency also involves collaborative outreach work, adding a further dimension to a relationship that is set to continue to the opening of the new Philharmonie in 2014.

COLIN CURRIE PERFORMS JENNIFER HIGDON’S PERCUSSION CONCERTO Baltimore Symphony Conductor Marin Alsop “As the concerto proceeds, Higdon, a Pulitzer Prize winner, builds a vibrant atmosphere, with the strings creating shaded textures, the horns contributing bright lines and the woodwinds intermittently emerging above the fray. The music roiled and flared, and Currie’s performance grew increasingly energetic; a serene song for xylophone and celesta cooled the temperature a bit, but the work surged again with a riotous cadenza and an outsized finale.... Currie distinguished himself throughout, and Higdon joined the conductor and her soloist onstage to an enthusiastic ovation.” San Jose Mercury News, March 2012

“Astonishing musicality”
COLIN CURRIE
The Telegraph
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Conductor Alexander Shelley “The Edinburgh-born soloist makes a big impression with his astonishing musicality...centred around his love for marimba, Higdon’s Percussion Concerto had him front-of-stage with marimba, percussion and drum kit, and moving around the
instruments. The piece included wafting marimba, bowed sounds, and full tilt drum kit solos, a la rock bands ... Currie’s cadenza was vibrant and there was particular interest in the dialogue and interplay, like echoes and “duels” between the soloist and the orchestral percussion players.” Capital Times, September 2010 Cabrillo Festival 2010 Conductor Marin Alsop “More impressive was Higdon’s 2005 Percussion Concerto, written for the phenomenal Colin Currie and displaying his talent for drawing a wide spectrum of sounds from intractable instruments: in his hands, the marimba coos and a drum set thunders.” Financial Times, August 2010 London Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor Marin Alsop world premiere “Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto is a brilliantly crafted, brilliantly theatrical, display piece

for its splendid dedicatee, the British percussion soloist Colin Currie. Progressing from throbbing marimba through clattering woodblocks to a drum kit from hell, Currie always found beauty in precision…Elegance too.” Times, December 2007 Philadelphia Orchestra Conductor Christoph Eschenbach Carnegie Hall world premiere “The performance elicited a cheering ovation for the extraordinary percussion soloist, Colin Currie, and for the composer. Once the first section really takes off, the music is nonstop in its energy. There are frenzied outbursts and flourishes for the soloist on the marimba, vibraphone, blocks and drum sets. The concerto certainly provided a vehicle for the brilliant Mr. Currie, a limber, young virtuoso born in Edinburgh…The jazzy and vehement cadenza, played on the drum set, gave Mr. Currie his Max Roach moment. “ New York Times, December 2006

Similarly, after he paid off the Giants and witnesed Fasolt’s demise, his outward show of victory was so clearly mixed with feelings of guilt and shame.” Financial Times, July 2013

ANDREW MANZE REVIEWS BBC Proms 2012 Vaughan Williams Symphonies 4, 5 & 6 BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra “Vaughan Williams may have written some of the nation’s most requested pop classics, but a concert consisting solely of three of his symphonies is still a gamble, even at the Proms. Just such a braveheart act of audacity, however, paid off absolutely for Andrew Manze and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in this Prom, with a gratifyingly packed Albert Hall treated to passionately committed conducting and playing and, most important of all, a huge affirmation of Vaughan Williams’s enduring symphonic achievement… The credit for much of this belongs to Manze, whose direction never faltered. The fourth had an unflagging energy reminiscent of the composer’s own benchmark recorded performance of 1937, but with the hushed moments more ravishingly realised. The fifth showed what an influence Manze is having on the string playing of the BBCSSO, conjuring glowing pianissimos at the start of the third movement Romanza and in the resolution into the home key at the close of the finale. The sixth, difficult and enigmatic as ever, was boldly led and fearlessly played, with Manze even finding an unexpected inner tonal glow deep in the famously icy finale.” Martin Kettle, Guardian, ***** August 2012 “Conductor Andrew Manze registered all the changes of mood, but he didn’t indulge any of them. He aimed for a fleet, urgent and transparent sound, which the orchestra certainly delivered. The approach paid off, lightening Vaughan Williams’s sometimes over-heavy scoring, and mitigating what for me is the music’s over insistent emphasis on film score tension.” Ivan Hewett, Telegraph, August 2012 “The Fifth has always been popular for its serenity… Manze’s heartfelt, insightful account, wonderfully delivered by the BBCSSO, patiently achieved the work’s spiritual resolution. The long, long silence in the hall after the final chord spoke volumes. The Sixth Symphony evokes the horrors of war but Manze skilfully guided us too into that Whitmanesque Unknown Region — terrain that betokens Vaughan Williams at his most searching. Performances as fine as these demonstrate that taken together, the three symphonies embrace existential anxiety as well as sublimity: turbulent modernity as well as reassuring traditionalism. Readings, then, that decisively scotched the charge of parochialism. Mission accomplished.” Barry Millington, Evening Standard, August 2012 Winner of ABO/Rhinegold Artist Manager of the Year Award 2011

Mostly Mozart Festival 2012 Lincoln Center New York Bach, Mendelssohn, Mozart “The performance was shining and tight, responsive and lively but never exaggerated… In Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony the orchestra was focused and bright... The audience was ready for anything under Mr. Manze’s exciting direction.” Zachary Woolfe, New York Times, August 2012 “He [Manze] impressed… with his no-nonsense authority, his interpretive warmth and reluctance to dawdle over too familiar impulses.” Martin Bernheimer, Financial Times, August 2012 “As a conductor, he has risen quickly in the ranks, and one can see why.… Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony received a vibrant, nearly electrifying interpretation. Manze conducted with his whole body. He brought out some wonderful effects by revealing buried motives normally not heard, such as the whispering strings in the transitions of the first movement or the bright and breezy wind playing in the third movement Minuetto. The finale was a non-stop whirlwind of sounds redoubling with intensity at the coda’s conclusion.” Seen and Heard International, August 2012
