Possible Battery is a project that was initiated by a curiosity towards a large limestone structure of Battery Sea Fortress- Prison in Tallinn, Estonia. The curiosity led into deeper research within this structure, which became an investigation of how to convert a fortress into an opened, contemporary, and interesting building. The investigation of the structure spread into a study of the locale which gave the project programmatic input. The project is located by the seaside, not far from the historical center of Tallinn. The existing structure was built circa 1840 and is approximately 45.000 sqm. The structure has been unoccupied for almost 10 years. There are currently no fixed future plans for this state owned site.

Possible Battery is - an architectural case study project within an existing complex fortress structure - a masterplan proposal connecting a seafront, a residential area and the city center of Tallinn - a study of carving, cutting, demolishing, opening and bringing in light within a heavy and closed structure - a study of interaction between different programmes of Market, Hotel, Restaurants, Exhibition Hall, Student Housing, Spa and Shops within a very special and complex structure

PROJECT

Hedonistic qualities in extreme conditions. Water as remedy. Light as identity. LOCATION We judge places from our own perspective. Often remoteness is considered far in distance and complicated in accessability. Living and being in Longyearbyen, the town is as reachable and accessable as any other community where one might live. The remoteness is not present while you are local. If everything is already local, we need to go on a trip. 7 km West from Lonyearbyen - Baths of Longyearbyen.

Idea for the new City Hall was not to have only one main facade and entra ance, but to be accessable fro om all different sides. The design introduces a main lobby in the very center of the building, which iss surrounded by large office blocks of city government. The entrances to the buildings are from between th hose office blocks. The blocks are connected with the previously mentione ed main lo obbyy in between and by a large band inhabiting a different program from office spaces - auditoriums which are at the same tim me marking the different entrances to the building. The largest entrance area is faced towards the Admirality basin. Facing south-w west, this entrance will be lit by afternoon sun offering a wind-protecte public square in the end of the workday.

The Center for Architecture is a gallery space for architectural artwork. It’s aim is to introduce the local audience what is architecture and how is it done. The project is located in a large empty field by the harbour terminals in Tallinn, which in the near future will be occupied by large building blocks. Architectural approach of the project suggests that most of the gallery space should remain outside in the urban context. The Center itself is largely carved inside the ground with just two corridors popping out of the earth. Those two corridors are constructed with steel and glass and function as a pin-up wall for presenting posters. The space inside the building is for permanent exhibitions and lectures.

TALSINK KI City Governme ent City Hall 2 is the new City Hall for Tallinn. At the moment the istitution n is sc cattered around the whole citty in mostly tempora ary locatio ons. The new City y Ha all is planne ed to be built in the com ming years. My pro oposal is to locate the ne ew citty halll in a free spot near the Terminal D which connectts Talllinn to Helsinki. The City Hall is a place for the local politics as well as for th he development of TALSINKI (Tallinn-H Helsink ki) as the two citties are e loc cated very y clo ose e by an nd are look king for ways for more collaboration.

57 TheNational Museum of Stockholm in its building built in 1866 has grown in its collections and demands. The institution requires more space and strict light conditions. The institution of National Museum has outgrown the building and the building is suffocated. Studying the theories by Viollet Le Duc and Ruskin and having the Hermitage by Rem Koolhaas as my case study I decided to separate the institution from the building, moving out the National Museum and having the building itself as my project. The aim of the current project is to restore the experience of the building, restoring some of the light conditions, rooms and circulation. A building without an institution has no purpose and both, the building and the National Museum, are in the collective memory of the people of Stockholm. The task was to find

an institution which would have a similar position in the collective memory as the National Museum, which would fi t into the space given by the building and which would be fl exible in its exhibitions to adapt into the restored conditions of the building. As the Nobel Museum of Stockholm is looking for a bigger space and at the same time fulfi lls all the requirements, I propose to move the Nobel Museum into the current building of the National Museum. The result of the project is a historical building with its central stairways and circulation spaces, revealing views to the Castle and the Museum Park, leading to symmetrical exhibition spaces lit with natural light, it all contrasting to modern exhibitions exhibited by electronical devices. 69 A private house in a new residential development area outside Tallinn, in side a pine-forest. The project is looking into a concept development in model / material / space and later converting the outcomes into an architectural project. The Private House is an experiment in cornerless living - using corners only at the ends of the building. The project is investigating a contemporary forest-house, how much to react to the environment.

70 BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS ANALYSIS

spring 2011 The Oslo School of Architecture and Design students: Juan Ignacio Hodali, Lotta Kindberg, Heleri N천mmik, Paul Ramey supervisors: Michael Hensel, Defne Sunguroglu Hensel, Joakim Hoen

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES To understand and replicate the idealized geometry of a regular sea urchin. The goal is accomplished by using visual observations, literature reviews, 3d modelling (Rhino 4.0) , parametric modelling (Grasshopper) and Microscribe digitazing. Analyzing the idealized geometry of our sea urchin species will allow us to better understand the relationships that exist among the larger group of regular sea urchins.

72 SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE CITY TESTING STREETSCAPE GOING GLOBAL

spring 2012 The Oslo School of Architecture and Design students: Santiago Jiménez & Heleri Nõmmik supervisor: Jonny Aspen

IDEA The idea in testing is weather Streetscape could be used in wider area and not only for local purposes. The idea is to include different cities and students (and in theory different schools of Architecture and other Urban Studies) to help each other in communicating with urban environments and to create a database that can be used in the future for educational purposes. The idea in including Higher Education Facilities worldwide is to have a professional way for charing urban information and to develop and keep connections between schools. For example if a School of Architecture in Mexico had a project in Tallinn, then the students in Tallinn could have a few-days workshop in the selected area, gathering information for the school in Mexico. This way the students in Mexico colud get local approaches and local comments on the urban situation of Tallinn. In reverse, for example, if a School of Architecture in Tallinn had a project in Tallinn, and at the same time a School of Architecture from Mexico would have a study-trip in Tallinn, a workshop could be held for the students from Mexico. This way the students from Tallinn could have a fresh approach and comments about their hometown.

ASSIGNMENT We have asked 8 students in 4 cities to participate in the Streetscape testing in their hometown. We gave them the same instructions to the 8 students and we told them that they can do whatever they understood. The results were quite similar with a few diff erences. In our research we have used some people from outside the architectural community and their test approach show diff erent perspectives. In result, we can see if and which kind of information from Streetscape (pictures, perspectives, comments, map) are useful and/or essential for reading the urban areas. As two of those cities are our own previous hometowns we have later analyzed the test results from each other’s home cities, testing if we can read the pictures the same way that the locals see it. http://yourban.no/2012/03/27/steetscape/
