The city of Thessaloniki welcomes the 1st International Defense and Security Fair “DEFENSYS 2010”, which reveals TIF's experience and infrastructure, but also its ability to organize, indeed, international events, placing at the same time Thessaloniki on the map of defense and security systems market.

“DEFENSYS 2010” is organized under the auspices of the Ministry of National Defence, in collaboration with HELEXPO and the InterBalkan and Black Sea Business Centre, with the aim of presenting, in the best structural way, products as well as innovative ideas, while in parallel it consists an excellent mean for the promotion of the Defense Industry.

TIF's initiative in hosting “DEFENSYS 2010” covers a longstanding need of the fair market, breaking the tradition of obliging people and events of Thessaloniki to end up, sooner or later, to the capital. In this particular case, it happened exactly the opposite and thus “DEFENSYS 2010” enriches TIF's activities aiming to present transparently to the public a most important sector of the fair market as well as to stimulate the relevant operational sectors.

The great experience of the collaborating partners in sectoral exhibitions organized in a highly successful way, lays the conditions for the success of the present fair, and judging not only from the number of participants but also from the rich participation of official delegations, I believe that DEFENSYS fulfills the conditions for becoming even from the first year, an event of international importance and radiance.

It is with great interest that we await the opening in Thessaloniki of the 1st International Defence and Security Fair “DEFENSYS 2010”, organized by TIF together with HELEXPO and the Inter-Balkan and Black Sea Business Centre, under the auspices of the Ministry of National Defence.

The organisation of “DEFENSYS 2010”, is expected to create a new tradition in the presentation of innovative products. This tradition will emerge as a result of the distinctive role played by the city of Thessaloniki as a point of reference of the international defence industry and security systems manufacturers.

“DEFENSYS 2010” is a new international fair, wishing to present the last achievements of the defence industries and security systems of the principal representatives of this sector, in a world scale. In addition, however, it looks forward to becoming an international center of interstate, creative dialogue, aimed at promoting of productive cooperation and upgraded, constant and constructive participation, taking into account the developments in the area of international-regional geopolitical relations, the appearance of modern possible risks and new lurking threats, the aspirations of the society for peace and progress, and the need for a new development perspective focusing on the citizen.

In the framework of the fundamental changes which have been initiated in our country, the Hellenic Defence Industry is able to -and should- offer many and valuable services with the view to reassuring the defence power of the country as well as its growth path.

Thessaloniki, as the location hosting DEFENSYS 2010, is of particular significance, because this is the base of NDC-GR (NATO Deployment Corps); besides, the city is situated near the Headquarters of CAOC (Combined Air Operations Centre), the 1st Army, the Tactical Air Command of the Air Force, SEEBRIG (South-Eastern Europe Brigade) and numerous other military facilities. In this context, DEFENSYS 2010 has attracted the interest of major industries in the defense and security market from 21 countries, namely: Germany, Sweden, Armenia, Bulgaria, Italy, France, Hungary, United Kingdom, Israel, USA, Greece, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Lebanon, Luxemburg, Jordan, Canada, Switzerland and Russia. More than 45 countries will be officially visiting the Exhibition with Government Officials and Armed Forces Delegations, while 25 Defense Ministers and Deputy Ministers will lead the Delegations of their country. Furthermore, International Organisations, such as the EU-Common Security & Defense Policy, NAMSA (NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency), ÍÁÔÏ and NAMFI (NATO Missile Firing Installation), will be attending DEFENSYS 2010 as exhibitors with their own stands. Additionally, the first International Peace Enforcement and Peacekeeping Mission, which took place in 1897 with the participation of seven countries, will be presented at a special pavilion. Present at DEFENSYS 2010 will also be the Hellenic Aerospace and Defense Group (EELEAA/HASDIG), which not only participates through its member companies but also organises a conference on topics related to defense industries, i.e. defense and security, as well as the Hellenic Manufacturers of Defence Material Association (SEKPY). Staging DEFENSYS 2010 upgrades Thessaloniki's key position and its role as an economic and geostrategic centre, as well as centre of development of the Balkans and South Eastern Europe. The 1st DEFENSYS International Defense and Security Exhibition, has brought the most important representatives of the international defense industry to Thessaloniki. The goal of the organizers of DEFENSYS, TIF SA and HELEXPO SA which are state agencies and official organizers of exhibitions in Greece and of the Inter-Balkan and Black Sea Business Centre (DIPEK) is to turn this exhibition and Thessaloniki into a reference point of global interest in the defense and security sector. The Hellenic Ministry of National Defense has been a key supporter in this effort and DEFENSYS 2010 is being held under its auspices. During the three days of DEFENSYS, the International High Level Forum titled “Armaments Programmes Versus Competition within the Current International Financial Environment” and the International Conference of the Association of Aerospace & Defense Companies of Greece titled “The Contribution of the Defense Industry to the Greek Economy & Security” will be the focal point of interest, both in Greece and abroad. The success of the exhibition is warranted by the long experience of HELEXPO in organizing exhibitions, while the strategic position of Thessaloniki in South-Eastern Europe also plays a major role. I am optimistic in believing that this exhibition will become an institution for the city of Thessaloniki, consolidating its position as a centre of development for the broader region.

The dynamism reflected by DEFENSYS 2010, the 1st International Defense and Security Exhibition, fully justifies TIF's estimation that establishing a trade exhibition in the sector of defense industry and security systems not only fills the gap left behind by the cancellation of similar events in Athens, but also creates new prospects for the city of Thessaloniki. This is because TIF, the national exhibition agency, optimally combines its own entrepreneurial strategy with the strategic location of our city, as a hub of NATO activities in Greece and an attraction pole on the Larissa-Thessaloniki axis of national defense activities. The same dynamism also reflects another choice made by TIF: its joint efforts with HELEXPO and DIPEK, in the context of this event, prove that the scheme of cooperation among equal partners who combine their forces towards the same goal warrants the successful achievement of all our aims. In regard to the realization of this ambitious exhibition, we would like to warmly thank NAMSA, NATO's Maintenance and Supply Agency, which eagerly responded to TIF's invitation concerning the organization of the event. NAMSA participates with its own pavilion and its representatives are at the disposal of all exhibitors and visitors, ready to share information about its actions, its role and the manner of cooperating with national defense industries. Ôhe Ministry of National Defense has fully supported our efforts; TIF's proposal to hold DEFENSYS in Thessaloniki was immediately accepted. The Ministry has also helped us in every possible way so that today's impressive outcome could be achieved, at this exhibition of major significance for the city and the whole of Greece, from a military as well as a political and economic point of view.

At the same time, it aims at the continuous promotion of the competitiveness and business activities of the Hellenic defense industries, as well as the improvement of their entrepreneurial and financial environment. The member-companies of HASDIG possess significant know-how in Research and Development and their industrial infrastructure is of very high quality. Besides their significant involvement in the domestic defense armaments market, the member-companies of HASDIG have developed successful co-operations with industry leaders in the international defense systems arena. The target of HASDIG is to further increase the business activities of its member-companies by participating not only in local defense procurement programs, but also in multinational R & D and production programs. As President of the Board of the Hellenic Manufacturers of Defense Materials Association (SEKPY), on behalf of the members of the board but also from all the Association's members I welcome the commencement of the 1st International Defense and Security Fair “DEFENSYS 2010” which takes place in Thessaloniki.

Ï ÓÅÊÐÕ, åßíáé Óýíäåóìïò ìç êåñäïóêïðéêüò, éäñýèçêå ôï 1982 êáé Ý÷åé ùò ÌÝëç ôïõ, ðåñéóóüôåñåò áðü 100 Åðé÷åéñÞóåéò ôçò ÅëëçíéêÞò ÁìõíôéêÞò Âéïìç÷áíßáò, ÊñáôéêÞò êáé ÉäéùôéêÞò, ðïõ áðáó÷ïëåß ðÜíù áðü 15.000 Üôïìá. Ïé Åðé÷åéñÞóåéò áõôÝò, åßíáé ðéóôïðïéçìÝíåò êáôÜ ISO 9000 êáé äéáèÝôïõí êáôÜëëçëç õðïäïìÞ, åìðåéñßá êáé ãíþóåéò, ãéá ôçí êáôáóêåõÞ áìõíôéêþí ðñïúüíôùí áñßóôçò ðïéüôçôïò óýã÷ñïíçò ôå÷íïëïãßáò.

These are certified businesses, under the ISO 9000 standard, of appropriate structure, experience and knowledge for the construction of defense material of excellent quality and up-to-date technology. Its purpose is the support and promotion of its members' interests, the collaboration with similar Associations and Industries of other countries and the upgrade of the Hellenic Defense Industry so that it can cover national and international needs but especially to reduce the unbearable, for Greece, commercial balance in defense materials. SEKPY is a member of the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV) for the defense industry and is considered one of the top sectoral Associations-SEV members in matters of activities and results. With its members' help, SEKPY has been upgraded and, therefore, has the approval of the involved institutions of the Hellenic Ministry of National Defense in matters of equipment with which is officially involved in talks and its opinion is well respected. My belief is that the 1st International Defense and Security Fair “DEFENSYS 2010” will provide to Greece an ideal chance to promote the capabilities and prospects of the Hellenic Defense Industry and will also create favourable conditions for collaboration with industries of other countries, especially in a time period of economic crisis which makes this collaborations necessary and valuable to our country. I wish every success in “DEFENSYS 2010” exhibition.
