PROJECT 01.

MORE THAN FRAMES A form begins with structure and material

This is a timber design based on some tipical items of structure and material. For the former, portal frame can be used to create large-span structure so we are easy to make spacious interior. For the latter, wood could be stronger and sustainable compared with traditional building materials. So, when we combine these two advantages together, we are sure to create an amazing community centre made of wood.

A.Library The library creates an all-timber interior atmosphere for readers.

DETAILS OF CONNECTIONS Modern wooden structure should be really careful about connections, particularly those points near outdoor area. Also, if we must use more than one type of structure, we have to think how to make transition. In my work, I use some ways to add beams and columns to main frames. These amazing little gadgets are really interesting.

HYPER SCHOOL Sky-scraper School in 2050 future Course: Architectural Design ( Ⅳ ) Type: Skyscraper Design Date: 2020.06 Location: Xiangshan Park, Xinyi District, Taipei Individual project Instructor: Associate Prof. Cai Zhichang

In the future megacities, population, traffic, and environmental issues will add burden for land. But the number of highrise buildings could rapidly increase due to the expansion of cities, and realated land need. People have gradually adapted to live in the vertical direction. So, is it possible to shift the school’s layout from land to the sky?

Now, I will rise a conception of a super school in the future. It is located in crowded Asia, along the hillside. I break the boundary between storeys and then connect them together.

In the near future in Taipei, a crowded, island megacity, we are having fewer land for everything. In this case, school which requires high-standard site should consider to develop in the vertical dimension.

Originally, the south side are built along the hill, it cannot get enough sunlight.

However, we can solve this problem by adding a lighting atrium, which changes the sunlight into diffused light, and then gives people good light-condition.

SECTION 2-2 PERSPECTIVE

WOW! It's my ideal school. When studying, my team members in another college can easily group up without traveling across a large campus because they are just on the nearby floors. In leisure time, I can also go to the library downstairs, reading, enjoying the beautiful senery out of the window and order a cup of drink.

The art gallery between classroom and library is great, too! We're going to hold exhibition of graduation project here and local people are welcomed to enjoy our artworks!

PROJECT 03.

CONNECT THE SKY A Combination of Architecture & Landscape

Greenland is a shared place for local residents, as well as a unique mark for the whole city. However, in China, different plazas are usually made separately. They are big enough but fail to give a city an intact greenland. So, why not make up the lost connection, both from the perspective of urban scale and people's view?

SITE ANALYSIS

FORM & EVOLUTION

In Nanjing, greenlands didn’t play an important role in citizens’s lives until the 21 century. However, they seem to be split by buildings.

The picture above means skyline split,lack of indoor area and iunpleasant space of walking across the road.

According to my research, the local residents want open space, not only a square for taking a walk, but also a community complex, which is bigger than a traditional community centre. Maybe, the whole site should become an ideal place for multi-activities.

Soild and void, when the two intersect each other, a third space type is created, obtaining both of the spatial feelings of its prototypes.

Northern Part:

1. three sparated area

2. connect these area as an interactive plaza

3. use curved wall to strengthen this feeling

4. adjust the edge to make it smoother

Sunlight and rain, when the two weathers meet together, a third route is created, both for people and the drainage.

Southern Part: TRANSPORTATION

Present transport system.

Pedestrian can easily conflict with vehicles.

Connect two plazas and add some extra infrastructures.

1. Use a bridge to connect two squares.

2. Cover the whole site, as well as building underground zone.

3. Lift the central area, enabling people walk pass it.

VIEW OF SPECIFIC SITES E. This part has good sunlight condition. In different time period of a day, people can experience various spatial connections by light and shadow.

And the process of crossing different zones is also an interesting experience.

F. The plaza on the other side of the road doesn’t have ideal sunlight condition because of being in the shadow of high-rise buildings. So, we can place some indoor infrastructure here, such as a gym.Although this design has a dome covering a huge area, there is no worry of humidty, stuffiness or lack of sunlight, since I design a good ventilation and drainage system.

People can enjoy this area at any time, they do not need to consider whether the bad wether would strike them.

UNIT BLOCKS COMBINATION

The two-person unit is the simplest form, but it has complete functions, which fully shows the assembly concept.

Single-person living unit, consisting of a cube unit and sloped roofs, the roof attic scale is suitable for sleep and rest.

Nuclear family unit, consisting of a double unit and a double pitched roof, with one roof for rest and the other for viewing or meditation.

PROJECT 05.

URBAN GREEN NECKLACE Urban Design & Affordable housing strategy

Thorncliffe Park is situated in the East end of Toronto, Ontario. The site is one of many housing developments in the GTA, built on the principles of post-war multi-family housing. Thorncliffe’s residence towers (below) are home to about 30,000 people, and due to the aging structures and early zoning strategies, the area has become a hub for new immigrants due to it’s affordability in relation to its somewhat disconnected location. Statistics show a dominant number of low-income, first generation individuals call Thorncliffe Park home, making this area a prime opportunity for social revitalization through thoughtful densification.

Among all the communities along Eglinton Avenue, Thorncliffe just sits on a ‘basin’: lower income, higher population diversity and surrounded by large area of green space. This community has high potential to become an urban complex to attract more people as well as income and vitality.

Population density is an issue at Thorncliffe, mainly due to the poor planning of existing residence blocks and it's proximity to the Don River Parklands at its perimeter.

Since Thorncliffe is home to a wide variety of immigrants,opportunities arise to densify the existing urban fabric and create new, meaningful spaces for communal interaction.

The area originally designed for a vehicle-centric lifestyle has become outdated and irresponsible, but parking lots take much area, and divide communities from one another and disrupt the natural landscape.

Residents enjoy public spaces for social gatherings and interaction, yet have expressed desires to provide better options for public amenities such as children's playgrounds, recreational facilities and covered outdoor spaces.

Currently, public spaces are the remnants of land found between housing blocks. They are disconnected, and limited in their ability to become a place for leisure. The boundaries of Thorncliffe are not well defined, leading to a sense of irregularity and disconnection throughout the whole community.

CONCEPT: URBAN & COOMUNITY SCALE

The concept Urban Green Necklace aims at densify Thorncliffe Park in various scales, from urban planning, community to individual buildings. Basically, this ideas gives both blocks and buildings a clear boundary, while still leave openings to connect surrounding context. The boundary is just like a ring, and the intensified centrual area (plaza for community, public space for building) is gemstone. The ring and stone consist 'necklace'.

Step 1. Setting Up Frames and Cores

Maximum Transportation Size

All the living units are prefabricated in the factory. In construcation site, we only need pile them, minimizing the influence on community nearby.

Cores and frames are the only parts need pouring reinforced concrete.

Living unit is modular, and meets the transportation restriction. Each unit can be shipped to construction just once (at most twice), which save the shipping cost.

Five different unit types satisfy various living requirements.

The whole site now has a very clear boundary, it blocks hustle and bustle from traffic in main road, but still leave opening to the inner community.
