BEAMSETTERS

SAFETY IS ALL ABOUT THE RIGHT SETTINGS

2 | INTRODUCTION

BEAMSETTERS FROM HELLA

Up to a few years ago, complaints about brakes, lighting and exhaust systems, chassis components and bodywork were at the top of the faults list during MOTs and servicing work. In recent times, however, more and more vehicles with vehicle electronics damage are being brought into the garage for repair. Yet the fault rate established during the annual "light weeks" is still strikingly high! In addition, faults were found on the lighting equipment of every 3rd vehicle, with faults ranging from beams set too high to vehicles driving "blind". For this reason, garages and car drivers should ask themselves: “How much is my safety and that of other road users worth to me?

|3

Act according to the principle:

Every day is light check day! – it’s worth it. The result of the light test weeks shows that lighting equipment on every single customers vehicle needs to be checked. That not only increases turnover, but customer loyalty too, as car drivers value a good garage. So: “Every day is light check day!” is a good motto for more garage turnover and increased road safety. Give your customers the following information: • Always replace both light sources, because the design life of both light sources is about the same. • Test the glare value using the incident light meter and inform your customers about the circumstances under which visibility is restricted and/or oncoming traffic is dazzled. • Some light sources can only be replaced by garages (Xenon bulbs should always be replaced in the garage). • It is important to inform customers in the holiday season in particular that they will face fines in some countries for driving with defective lighting. In some countries, drivers are obliged to carry spare bulbs in the vehicle.

Precision headlights have a right to precision measuring devices

Lighting has developed into one of the most innovative areas in vehicles. The lighting equipment share is increased by HELLA products such as daytime running light, additional direction indicators, side marker lights and bend lighting. At the same time, the degree of technical product complexity is exponential. For this reason, the technology of HELLA beamsetters is just what garages need for optimum headlight setting.

Always state of the art Precise Reliable Extremely sturdy With type approval Made in Germany

Precision headlights have a right to be aligned by precision measuring devices – to do justice to this claim and the growing requirements of garages, HELLA’s beamsetters are subject to a continual improvement process. More than 50 years of development and production know-how in the field of beamsetters have contributed to the current series. Which do not only check DE, Xenon, free-face and paraboloid headlights, but check LED versions too. (Please note manufacturer’s specifications). Make sure that main, additional and fog lights are all aligned optimally. The longer column allows you to check not only passenger cars, trucks and motorbikes with ease, but also vehicles where the headlights are installed at a height above 1.20 metres, such as agricultural machines and municipal vehicles.

4 | WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HEADLIGHT SETTING

The measuring principle: In order to set headlights according to the legal regulations, the vehicle has to be placed exactly 10 metres in front of a white wall. The central axis of the headlight is projected onto the wall (dotted line). Next, the percentage of tilt of the headlight is determined – the headlight can be set again if necessary.

Special points to heed when using beamsetters: The Fresnel lens installed in the beamsetter box shortens the prescribed 10 m distance to 50 cm. How important the measuring accuracy of the beamsetter is, is demonstrated by a small calculation: an inaccuracy of half a centimetre over a distance of 50 cm corresponds to 10 cm difference over 10 m (ratio 10 m to 50 cm equals factor 20). This clearly shows the decisive effect the beamsetter has on the vehicle lighting: every millimetre counts when it comes to dazzle or driving in semidarkness.

The position of the photo diode – an example of the precision in HELLA beamsetters: The photo diode measures the luminous intensity entering the beamsetter box. On HELLA beamsetters, it is at the rear end of the beamsetter box – in an opening in the screen directly above the cross wires. In other words, exactly where the light from the beam hits. Precision setting values are achieved when measurement takes place here. Have another look where the diode is on your old SEG ...

6 | HELLA BEAMSETTERS SERIES IV

THE WHOLE SPECTRUM OF MODERN MEASURING TECHNOLOGY ...

HELLA SEG IV DLX: Our top model.

Rotatable column: For fine adjustment of the beamsetter box in front of the headlight. This means the SEGs no longer have to be moved. Thanks to the exact calibration of the column during the production process and its special holder (wear-free pin guide) in the base, the column remains extremely precise over the whole service life. New: The column has been lengthened to a measuring range of 1,400 mm, enabling headlights installed in higher positions to be set perfectly as well.

Handles: To improve haptics and prevent mechanical impact, a rubber sleeve has been fitted over the handle. This is also available as a retrofit option.

Deflection mirror in the beamsetter box: The deflection mirror allows the screen to be seen by the tester from different positions. Before and behind the SEG.

Heavier wheeled base suitable for use on rails: The heavy polymer concrete base ensures a very low centre of gravity and thus an extremely sturdy stance during everyday work in the garage.

Broadband sight housing: Revised broadband sight housing with integrated cross wires for easier alignment in front of the vehicle. Thanks to the horizontal displacement possibility, the device is adapted to the position of the tester and not vice versa. An improvement in the sight housing guide also prevents vertical leeway even after long use.

Digital incident light meter: After the headlights have been set, the glare value of the low beam and illuminance of the high beam can be read off quickly and precisely.

Eccentric axis: The eccentric axis on the SEG IV DLX and DLLX allows the SEG to be adapted to the floor conditions. The setting can be checked using the spirit level in the beamsetter box.

Screen/photo diode: An important advantage of the HELLA SEGs is the position of the photo diode. It is placed exactly where the light hits the screen, asthis is the only spot in which the lux value can be measured precisely.

Fresnel lens: All HELLA beamsetters are equipped with a high-quality Fresnel lens which exactly simulates the prescribed 10 m projection in a compact design.

Scaled wheel: The scale in steps of 10 makes exact tilting of the cut-off line possible. The laser positioning aid is switched on here as well. Equipment in the variants DL, DLX and DLLX.

Spirit level: Use this to check that the SEG is exactly parallel to the ground. Unevenness in the floor, which would otherwise lead to incorrect measuring results, can thus be compensated. Equipment of the variants DLX and DLLX.

Vertical adjustment: The special clamping mechanism makes vertical adjustment easier (can be done with one hand, and this button can now no longer be lost).

Laser positioning aid: Use this to align the beamsetter box quickly, comfortably and exactly for the light source. Equipment in the variants DL, DLX and DLLX.

REMARKS 1. For logistics reasons, some beamsetters are delivered in two packaging units. The SEG column must be ordered separately in this case. 2. All HELLA SEGs are delivered pre-adjusted. During work in the garage, the device can become misadjusted e.g. if it is knocked over unintentionally. For this reason, HELLA recommends regular checks (see operating instructions). 3. Please heed country-specific and certification-dependent specifications.

10 | DONE THE LIGHT TEST?

Your safe road to more turnover:

If one in three vehicles is driving around with defective lighting, additional turnover will automatically come in to the garage. Recommend to customers who have a faulty headlight bulb that they should also replace the second bulb immediately. This saves customers both problems and time. Because in our experience, the second bulb will not last much longer either.
