WELCOME BY THE GOVERNMENT

On November 13, 2022, we will celebrate the 39th Athens Marathon. I therefore seize this opportunity to extend a heart felt greeting to all friends and all those who gather in Athens from every corner of the globe to run the unique, authentic, classic route.

The classic Marathon, the Authentic Marathon the one and only Marathon Race that starts from the field of the historical battle of Marathon and ends at the Panathenaic Stadium covering the 42 kilometers that have been established as a distance since 1896 on the same steps of authenticity and authenticity as that of historical event. It is the memory of the historical “Nenikikamen — we won” that, now appearing emerges as a unique symbolic global message of principles, ideas, peace and solidarity. There is no sport event with more symbolism than the Road Marathon event. Let alone the city of Athens, which is a symbol of unity, uniqueness and authentici ty. Unity because it unites us all around the message of victory carried by the messenger after the great battle.

It unites us all around the joy of participation mainly by overcoming the limits of human endurance and the possibili ties that each participant is called upon to overcome. Unique ness because there is nothing similar in world history; and authenticity because the Athens Marathon is held following exactly the same steps that the (ancient) heroic messenger made.

The Athens Marathon is a wonderful experience that the participants will always treasure in their hearts. It is at the same time a test that requires e ort, fatigue, discipline and commitment to the goal. This experience culminates with the finish in Kallimarmaro in the shadow of the Acropolis and the Parthenon.

In my capacity as Minister of Tourism, I am grateful to the members of SEGAS for the continuous organization of the highest and unique sporting event in Athens over a number of years, which contributes to the promotion of the country and the city of Athens worldwide. I welcome the thousands of marathon runners from al/ over the world to the cradle of fair competition to the one and only authentic Marathon, the one that is being held in 21st century’s Athens.

The 39 th edition of Athens Authentic Marathon, the popular running event of our country, is getting ready for another chap ter for the ages. The Marathon keeps the universal values of sports alive, originating from the Olympic Ideal.

The organization of the Athens Authentic Marathon consti tutes a distinct chapter for the reinforcement of the road event’s popularity, both within and outside of the Greek borders. The Ministry of Sport, via institutional initiatives and extroversion strategies, provably supports the running events movement and implements a dynamic agenda for its further development.

The fact that the entries for all races, some of the most demanding ones around the globe ( the 42km for the Authen tic Marathon, the 5 & 10km races), were covered before the deadline of the registration period, demonstrates the huge potential and the true passion of the people for the running events movement.

The Marathon inspires us through the elements of determina tion, persistence, dedication, competitiveness and loyalty to the final goal: the one of crossing the line, completing our objective and witnessing the vindication for the hard e ort. Without doubt, it reminds us of a basic principle for the mara thon called “life”: Never give up.

The organization of the Athens Authentic Marathon is also an excellent opportunity to realize the value of sports events regarding the economic and cultural development of our coun try as well as the upgrade of our society’s sports culture. Through the e ective cooperation of local administration authorities, the Hellenic Athletes Federation and the private sector, Greek athletics, as a whole, can become the world reference for sports action.

I am glad that this amazing event will raise the standards once again, honoring the combatants of the Battle of Marathon, the legendary Spyros Louis and all runners who will brighten up the races for the participation.

Congratulations to the organizers and good luck to all the participants!

WELCOME BY SEGAS & REGION OF ATTICA

On behalf of the Hellenic Athletics Association (SEGAS), I am honored to welcome all the Athletes, who came from every part of Greece and from all over the world, in order to partici pate in this big race, the “Athens Marathon. The Authentic”.

Everyone’s presence, trully moves us!

We believe that for each and every one of you, this is an important experience of a lifetime and it is worth living it with all your personal power.

Follow the path of history and write your own history.

The Authentic Marathon is not just an endurance race. The classical route symbolizes the superhuman e ort of a hoplite, to carry the message of victory from the battlefield of Mara thon to Athens.

The new generation, today, will deliver the flame with the inextinguishable symbols, so that you can also carry, with your participation in today’s race, the messages of:

•The victory of the solidarity of the people, which marks the very vision of sports

• The e ort to prevent the ecological destruction of the planet

• The fight for world peace, for a world without poverty, discrimination, injustice

Have a good race, so that the ideals and dreams of the people for prosperity to triumph, which are also embodied in this “Athens Marathon. The Authentic”.

The Region of Attica has the privilege and honour to host every year a sporting event of great history, remembrance and culture, international in scope.

The contribution of this leading event to the tourist promotion of Attica is important as it makes our Region a sporting and cultural destination at a time when tourism is a driving force in the coun try’s development prospects.

The enhancement of the surplus value of Attica’s brand name, a central pillar of our own policy, urges us towards supporting such an emblematic race.

In this context, we have doubled the amount allocated for the 39 th Marathon, as we want to invest in sporting events that unite the past with the present and therefore bring multiple benefits. We cooperate with the administration of the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS), who, being fully aware of the responsibility they have to organise the authentic Marathon and acting with seriousness and consistency, have established a wider collabora tion between the State, the Local Government and all stakeholders in order to contribute to and guarantee the successful conduct of this leading event.

A new era of cooperation is unfolding, as the Marathon constitutes a powerful pillar of development for Culture and Sport. To this end, we contribute the most to the conduct of this global running event. The Marathon remains for many generations a point of reference that inspires and teaches everyone self-denial, perseverance and determination through sports.

The past meets the future and the legend meets history. We send the timeless message of peace and fellowship amongst the peoples, of the need for social solidarity and of faith in the power of free human will. The Region of Attica will contribute greatly to the realisation of this global running sport which invites young and old people to become an integral part of the sport chain. We work with all those stakeholders embracing healthy ways of life, to lay solid foundations for the future of sport for young generations.

In closing, I would like to congratulate all those who contribute every year to the e orts made in order to implement this major project and to cordially wish every success in the event. Above all, to wish every success to the partic ipants, who compete with their own limits, knowing that the participation is much more valuable than the final ranking.

I wholeheartedly wish you a pleasant stay, a beautiful race, and may the best athlete win!

BY THE

HELLENIC OLYMPIC COMMITTEE & THE CITIES OF ATHENS AND MARATHON

It is a great honor and pride for the Hellenic Olympic Committee to partici pate every year in the great celebration of the Athens Authentic Marathon, with the concession of the Panathenaic Stadi um.

In this venue, where the first Athens Modern Olympic Games were held in 1896 and later on for the occasion of the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games when some sports also were held here.

Greece’s sporting heritage continues every year, with the participation of athletes from all over the world to the Authentic Marathon.

The Athens Authentic Marathon is not a simple race, but a multifaceted sporting, touristic, cultural and social event that highlights the best side of Greece. At the same time, the connection of the Athens Marathon with the “Kallimarmaro” venue, reminds the world that the gift of the Olympic Games to Humanity came from the Ancient Greeks.

Beyond its association with the ancient and modern Olympic Games, the Authentic Marathon itself reminds everyone of how beautiful our country is! It is one of the most well-known and widespread sports events of Greece and a huge national asset for our sporting and cultural heritage.

On November 13th, let’s all leave our homes to applaud, along the marathon route or at the finish line at the Panathe naic Stadium, the thousands of runners who will participate this year, not giving up their own special struggle, but also to send the message that Greeks keep their traditions, respect their heritage, love their homeland, and do not give up the fight in di cult times!

We are delighted it is time to host yet another Athens Marathon.

The original route is there, stand ing irresistible on the pedestal of its historic background and glory coupled to its contemporary prestige.

This very route is proof that Athens is not a stop: it is the destination. We look forward to welcoming athletes from Greece and abroad to our city, to admire them and their painstaking e orts, to learn from their example, their endless natural power, and their indomita ble spirit.

Let us commend and congratulate all partners and entities who have worked together to encompass parallel events and activities for sustainable growth and the circu lar economy.

The City of Athens rallies around this e ort overall, aimed at having a series of impeccable sports events since, parallel to the classic Marathon, there are also the massively popular 5km and 10km road races as well as the kids race.

And a colorful stream of people of all ages is bound to flood the city over the span of two days and fill it with optimism.

We are all going to be there.

Dear friends of sports

We are more than ready to host, once more, the Flame Lighting Ceremony and the Start of the 39th Authentic Marathon Run, in the historic location of Marathon, which will be the epicen ter of sports events and the meeting point of runners from all around the world, whose common aim is participation and victory.

At the historical Marathon Tomb, the day before the Authentic Marathon Run, the Flame Lighting Ceremony will take place with the participation of students from the schools of Marathon for the first time. Following, there will be a torch relay to the location of the Marathon Start, where the Altar will belit up.

On the day of the Run we shall fire the gun for the thousands of runners who will take position at the Marathon Start. This year I need to point out that we have concluded the construction of a ring-road around the Marathon Start and the Stadium, thus improving access and services for an increased number of participants. We will be there, to help, applaud and encourage with eventsduring the 16 km of the Run through the Municipality of Marathon, wishing for all runners to achieve their goal.

We are inviting you all on the 12th and 13th of November 2022 to experience together this unique celebration of sports, which glorifies Greece and Marathon and makes it a landmark and top destination for athletes, whether professionals or amateurs. Best of luck and a very good finish to all!

Warm-up areas for runners

Runners can warm up on the rubber carpet (tartan) of the Stadium, which is located within the starting facility of the Road Marathon.

Management of Personal E ects and Equipment

Runners must place their personal belongings and clothing in the special bag, which they will collect from the Runner Service Centre together with their entry number.

The Organising Committee will not accept any backpacks, bags, etc., other than the special bags that it makes available to the runners.

Attention: a sticker with the runner΄s entry number must be a xed to the bag in such a way that it is clearly visible. Alternatively, it is recommended that the entry number be written on the bag with a marker. The bag must be tightly closed and must not contain any travel documents, money, valuables or medicines. SEGAS and the AMA Organizing Committee are not responsible in case of loss of valuable items.

Attention. After this period, the bags and their contents will be disposed of.

By 08:20΄ (at the latest 40 minutes before the first start of the Marathon Road Race), runners must deliver the special bags with their clothes and personal belongings to the trucks with the SPEEDEX sign, which will be located 150 meters in front of the Start Arch (after the starting light), to be transported to the finish. The placement of the special bags inside the clothing

transport vehicles will be based on the number of entries of each runner. The clothing transport vehicles will be marked with the runners΄ numbers, whose bags will be managed by volunteers of the event, and will be available for the runners΄ convenience.

It is suggested that runners, immediately after disembarking from the bus, hand over their special clothing bag to the respective clothing transport vehicles, according to their participation number.

If you deem it necessary, you can wear the specific «warming cover» that will be distributed by Organizing Committee when you disembark at the Marathon Start Line, for as long as you are waiting for the start of your block. It will keep your body warm.

It is also strongly recommended that runners, a few minutes before entering the starting block, leave their rough and light clothing in the special clothing collection baskets. These baskets will be located in the center of the three blocks before the start block, i.e. the 2nd, 3rd and 4th blocks. The AMA Organising Committee, in collaboration with organizations, will collect this equipment/clothing, which, after sorting, will be donated for a social purpose.

After the finish line, the plastic bags will be collected by showing the participation number and with the support of

15

the volunteers/drivers at a predetermined place on Vass. Olga Avenue at the height of the fountain of Zappeion, 200m to the right after the exit from the courtyard of the Panathinaikos Stadium.

During the warm-up/waiting time, an audible instruction will be given to runners who wish to warm up individually (running, stretching etc.), avoiding running in groups and avoiding places where runners are likely to collide.

Positioning of runners at the start (starting blocks)

All runners shall be placed in blocks at the start area according to their number of entries and color. The block is indicated on each runner΄s entry number.

Take your place early in the starting blocks based on the color and the inscription on your entry number!

Fifteen minutes (15΄) before the start all athletes must have taken their΄place in the respective block!

NOTE: The distribution of runners in blocks is done according to the performance achieved during the last four years (2019-2022), as registered by the runners in their entry form and checked by the Marathon O ce of SEGAS. Any failure to record or record an incorrect performance in the entry form will result in the automatic classification of these runners in one of the last blocks.

START LINE

A ¨wave start¨¨ is applied. A total of 10 consecutive starts are given.

The runners of the race will be distributed in di erent blocks. The line-up of the blocks of participants is defined along the straight start of the marathon start, in the extension of the facili ty behind the start and the stadi um inside the facility.

The participants in each block and in each row are defined in advance by name by the timing system and carry a named chip on their participation number so that, on the one hand, they main tain their specific and defined participation in the starting block in order to control their position in the block and, on the other hand, to control their course at the start, their course along the route (through the electronic control and timing points) and at the finish.

All participating runners are placed in blocks at the start area, according to their participation number and color. The block is indicated on the entry number. Large balloons of the same color as the block will be placed at the two entrances of the block. Attention is drawn to entering the block from the back, so arriving early to the block o ers a better position.

Please note that runners are allocated to the starting blocks (with no possibility of arbitrary change) based on their perfor mance, so a uniform pace of movement is ensured for partici pants in a particular starting block.

All participants are requested to respect the rules governing the start and to follow the instruc tions of the sta and volunteers of the Organizing Committee.

Health Protocol of the event SEGAS, in line with the latest data of the Greek State on the spread of the COVID-19 disease, withdraws the health protocol of AMA 2022. For the protection of all athletes, volunteers and work ing personnel, we recommend the

observance of safe distances -where crowded- and the perfor mance of a preventive self-diag nostic test (self test) both on the day of receipt of their participation material and on the day of the race.

The presentation of a COVID-19 certificate (vaccination, recovery, negative diagnostic test) when receiving their entry material or on the day of the race is no longer compulsory.

Positioning at the Start line

The layout of the starting blocks is defined along the straight line on Vas. Amalias Avenue (at the height of Megaro Bodossaki), in the direction of Syntagma. NOTE: The allocation of the runners to blocks is made accord ing to the performance achieved during the last four years (2019-2022), as registered by the runners in their entry form and checked by the Marathon O ce of SEGAS. Any failure to record or record an incorrect performance in the entry form will result in the automatic classification of these runners in one of the last blocks. The participants in each block and in each row are defined beforehand by name by the timing system and carry a named chip on their participation number, so that, on the one hand, they maintain their specific and defined participation in the start ing block in order to control their position in the block and, on the other hand, their course at the start line, their course on the route (through the electronic control and timing points) and at the finish. It should be noted that the runners are allocated to the starting blocks (without the possibility of arbitrary change) on the basis of their performance, thus ensuring a uniform pace for participants in a given starting block. All participating runners are placed in blocks in the starting area according to their entry number and color. The block is indicated on the entry number. Large balloons of the same color as the block will be placed at the two entrances of the block.

Attention is drawn to entering the block from the back, so arriving early to the block o ers a better position.

Start line procedure

A “wave start” is applied. A total of 7 consecutive starts are given, in di erent blocks, a few minutes apart.

This is followed by the University race with one block at 18:00. Take your place early in the starting blocks based on the indicated block and the color of your entry number!

It is also recommended that all partic ipants, regardless of age, have a full cardiac check-up before participating in the race. The organizers will not request medi cal certificates from any athlete, as all participants compete at their own risk.

Health Protocol of the event SEGAS, in line with the latest data of the Greek State on the spread of COVID-19, announces the withdrawal of the health protocol of AMA 2022.

For the protection of all athletes, volunteers and working person nel, we recommend the obser vance of safety distances -where crowded- and the performance of a preventive self-diagnostic check (self test) both on the day

of receipt of the participation material and on the day of the race.

The presentation of a COVID-19 Certificate (vaccination, recovery, negative diagnostic test) upon receipt of their entry material or on the day of the race is no longer mandatory.

In addition, the use of a mask at the Runner Service Center & Marathon EXPO, as well as at the start line/finish line of each race, is optional, but recommended.

individually (running, flexibility exercises, etc.) in the areas behind the start line will be advised to do so, avoiding running in groups and avoiding places where there is confusion between runners or accompanying persons.

Positioning at Start line

The arrangement of the starting blocks is defined along the straight line on Vas. Amalias Avenue (at the height of Megaro Bodossaki), in the direction of Syntagma.

NOTE: The allocation of runners in blocks is made according to the performance achieved during the last four years (2019-2022), as registered by the runners in their entry form and checked by the Marathon O ce of SEGAS. Any failure to record or record an incorrect performance in the entry form will result in the auto matic classification of these runners in one of the last blocks.

It should be noted that the runners are allocated to the start ing blocks (without the possibility of arbitrary change) on the basis of their performance, thus ensur ing a uniform pace for partici pants in a given starting block.

All participating runners are placed in blocks in the starting area according to their entry number and color. The block is indicated on the entry number. Large balloons of the same color as the block will be placed at the two entrances of the block.

Attention the entrance to the block is from the back, so arriving early o ers a better starting posi tion.

THE ENVIROMENTAL ACTION PLAN OF ATHENS AUTHENTIC MARATHON

The Athens Authentic Marathon consists of a series of intense activities, with a great feeling of environmental consciousness. In collaboration with Polygreen, the Exclusive Supporter of this year’s environmental program, multiple recycling and waste management actions will be carried out, from the “OPAP Marathon Expo” until the finish line of this great race, the surroundings of the Panathenaic Stadium. The activities in detail are:

Proper waste management. Placement of recycling bins at the starting point and in specific points at the entrance of the Panathenaic Stadium, where all recycling materials will be gathered at the dedicat ed “Just Go Zero” stations. All materials will be transferred to licensed and certified recycling sites of Polygreen, that are contracted with the Greek Recycling and Utilization company.

This way, it is ensured that all materials are part of a chain management, where full traceability of all used up materials is ensured.

Bags made of 100% recycled material.

Polygreen took the initiative of producing 50.000 bags that will be handled to the runners during their registration. The bags are made of 100% recycled material from nearly 141.000 recycled plastic bottles.

Collection of clothes and shoes for a 2 nd life. The actions continue with the collection of clothes and shoes at the starting point of the race, as well as at the OPAP Marathon Expo site during its operation days, where fans and runners will be able to dispose their non-used clothes and shoes, in the dedicated “Just Go Zero” bins.
