Hello April!

R

ecently I’ve noticed a complete attitude change on social media and in the conversations we’re having with our customers. It seems that since the unveiling of the roadmap for releasing us all back into the ‘wild’, people have a renewed spring in their step and are looking forward to getting back to ‘normal’! Small business owners everywhere have been marking their calendars with various dates and opening up their order books and appointment diaries. I suspect hair and nail salons all over our region will soon be filled with clients desperate for an expert hair cut after months of trying to DIY! I also hear that travel agents’ phones have been ringing off their hooks too! (Do phones have hooks these days?) If all has gone to plan, we can look forward to all shops reopening this month too, as well as outdoor beer gardens, gyms and cafes. Bring it on! Our cover sponsor this month is Tigers Day Nursery, Theale

PINKTOMATO

who are busy gearing up for some Easter fun. If you have little ones and are looking into childcare options in preparation for returning to work, why not book a ‘show round’ and check out their impressive facility on Church Street in Theale. Whatever April has in store for you, I hope you and your family get to spend some time together in good health. The team here at Eye HQ will be very busy this month preparing to bring you a very special celebratory edition of Village Eye to mark our 100th issue and 10th birthday in May. We can’t wait to celebrate with you! Finally (and I know I say this every month but), please do use our local advertisers. They need you... and remember to tell them you saw them in Village Eye! Until next time, with love from us all at EYEHQ, have a great month everyone and keep smiling - it’s infectious!

THEALE RECREATION GROUND SURVEY Calling residents of Theale and users of Theale Recreation Ground! How would you like Theale’s recreation ground to be improved? The Parish Council wants to hear your views on the recreation ground and possible improvements to it. Perhaps you have been pondering over how new or different play equipment could benefit the local children, or perhaps you have been thinking about how more seating would help those less mobile? Better lighting and improving dog poo management are both frequently discussed, too, so make sure you fill out the survey and get heard. Residents of Theale will already have received a paper copy of the survey through their letterbox, so do fill it out and return it to the Co-op or the parish office post box. Alternatively, you can access the survey online here: www. surveymonkey.co.uk/r/WF8GYJ7 It should only take five minutes and will really help the council to improve the recreation ground and ensure it benefits as many residents as possible.

TADLEY MEN’S SHED!

You may remember Village Eye writing about Men’s Sheds in a previous issue, so we were delighted to see that the Men’s Shed in Tadley has continued to function during the pandemic. For those unfamiliar with the concept, Men’s Sheds are community spaces for men to connect, converse and create. The activities are often similar to those of garden sheds, but for groups of men to enjoy together. They help reduce loneliness and isolation, but most importantly, they’re fun. Most of the Sheds in the UK are run by the men that use them, though some are organised by organisations like Age UK. Tadley’s Men’s Shed is currently using the wonders of Zoom to continue to meet and share their interests, hobbies and DIY expertise, or to learn something new! Everyone is welcome and they meet on the 2nd and 4th Friday of every month. For more information, contact tadleymensshed@gmail.co.uk

Even better, you could win a three-course meal for two at The Bull pub! All survey responses received by the end of Sunday 18th April 2021 will be entered into a prize draw. The winner will be awarded a free three-course meal for two at either The Bull, Theale or The Craven Arms, Newbury, once lockdown restrictions allow them to reopen. Good luck!

ARE YOU SLEEP DEPRIVED? There’s no doubt that sleep has been a casualty of the pandemic, but if your sleep has been affected, help is at hand! Local sleep expert, Dr Lindsay Browing, has written a self-help book all about sleep. And she really knows her sleep. As an Oxford educated chartered psychologist, neurologist and sleep expert, she has been treating sleep disorders since 2006. She has advised the NHS, the police and utilities companies on sleep and shift-work and also provides better sleep workshops for companies, charities and schools. She told us, "Poor sleepers are often resigned to a life of poor sleep, thinking there is nothing they can do about it. However, that is far from the truth! In this book, I give people scientifically proven tools that can improve their sleep."

EASTER PRIZES!

Keep your eyes peeled for news on the ‘Tesco Burghfield Common’ Facebook page because – weather allowing – there should be an announcement about an Easter Tombola in aid of our local Foodbank soon. Of course, it will need to be held outside because of COVID restrictions, so the day that is chosen will be weather dependent.

Navigating Sleeplessness reveals that the key to sleeping well is to develop good habits that work for you. The book teaches you how to understand your patterns and discover what works, so that you can build and maintain a healthy personal sleep plan. It’s clear and concise and offers actionable strategies and step-by-step solutions to develop better sleep using self-care and self-compassion. Why not give it a try? You can find the book online at Amazon, Waterstones and WHSmith. Happy sleeping!

They are hoping for Good Friday, so please keep your eyes open for this event to be announced and support if you can. There will be one tombola for adults and one for children. A great way to be in with a chance of winning some prizes and at the same time, supporting an important local charity. Well done TESCO!

RUSSELL WATSON TO PERFORM AT ENGLEFIELD THIS SUMMER

Community News

I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here favourite, Russell Watson, will be swapping Castle Trials for an outdoor concert at Englefield House near Theale this summer – quite a contrast! The much-loved singer will be performing on July 25 as part of the Heritage Live Concert Series. The Last Night of the Heritage Proms with Russell Watson will feature the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra conducted by David Arnold, as well as featuring composer, arranger and producer Mike Moran, coloratura soprano Christina Johnston, and very special guests The NHS Choir. Russell Watson will perform a range of classics, including Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory, as well as uplifting showstoppers which we hear will include a very special Phantom of the Opera medley. Special guests for the summer show will be The NHS Choir. The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Voices Choir were first seen on Gareth Malone's BBC2 show,

Sing While You Work. They went on to hit the coveted Christmas No.1. spot in the official UK chart in 2015 with their single A Bridge Over You. Last year the choir recorded at Abbey Road Studios, and performed alongside Michael Ball and Captain Sir Tom Moore for a recording of You’ll Never Walk Alone, with profits going towards the NHS Charities Together.

summer concert knowing that you have supported this fabulous charity. For tickets, visit: www.englefieldestate.co.uk

To finish the evening, there will be a Spitfire flypast and a fireworks finale – stunning! £1 from every ticket sold for the event will be donated towards the NHS Charities Together, so you can enjoy a spectacular

SALACIOUS SWAPPING! Book swappers in Mortimer were left feeling hot and bothered recently when a selection of salacious materials were discovered in the village book-swap.

SPENCERS WOOD EASTER SCARECROW TRAIL

After the massive success of the Spencers Wood and Three Mile Cross Halloween Trail, the team are at it again but this time for Easter! Over the Easter holidays from 3rd to 10th April 2021, there will be a fun family Easter Scarecrow Trail with all the Scarecrows based on the theme of Animals. Lots of local families and businesses have got involved in building their own scarecrows and it’s bound to be a real crowd pleaser like previous village events. Maps will be available from Fraser’s Budgens in Three Mile Cross for just £1. There will also be an Easter Rock Hunt running at the same time. Find one of the Easter Rocks and you will automatically be entered in a prize draw! And of course there will be an Easter treat at the end of the trail, with prizes for the overall trail winner and also for Best Scarecrow, which will be down to a public vote! A big thank you must go to local businesses for helping this event happen, too. All money raised will go towards renovations at Spencers Wood Village Hall. Happy Easter Trailing!

Local swapper, Lola Froip, contacted us to urge residents not to leave inappropriate literature in the ‘Little Free Library’. “I was horrified to see a couple of risqué titles in there this afternoon. I have removed them and taken them home - It’s a joke.” she told us. “If whoever is leaving them is reading this, please stop. We are a respectable village and don’t want to encourage improper behaviour.” She also urged anyone who found further “infelicitous” material in the library to put it in the nearby bin. Who knows what will appear in there next!

Tigers at Theale Day Nursery is situated in the quiet village of Theale, which is a few minutes from junction 12 of the M4. The nursery is within walking distance of the railway station and bus stops which provides easy links to Reading and London. We have provided quality care for children in a homely environment for many years and pride ourselves on our family-feel atmosphere and child centred approach to learning. The nursery is divided into four rooms which cater for the individual needs of the children. There are two outdoor spaces which are used daily and equipped with age-appropriate resources to ensure both gardens provide learning opportunities for all children. We also have our very own bubble room, complete with bubble tube, UV lighting and musical resources. Children of all ages have access to this sensory space.

The cook provides well balanced meals including breakfast, lunch and tea with all allergies and dietary requirements catered for. The children also have access to fresh fruit throughout the day. We use the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework to provide stimulating activities based around the children’s interests to support the children’s learning and development. Each child has a key worker who tracks the children’s development and uploads observations with pictures and videos, so parents are involved with their child’s learning using the Parentzone app. The senior staff are well qualified which ensures the children are receiving high quality early years education and all staff have regular training opportunities to enhance and build on their existing knowledge. Our experienced management team have a hands-on approach and are involved in all aspects of the nursery.

Are All Easter Eggs the Same?

Other than Christmas, Easter is the biggest chocolate time of the year, when our houses are over-run with eggs of all sizes and shapes. But are all Easter eggs the same? Are there healthier alternatives? Here are your options, ranked from nutritionally best to worst.

The healthiest Easter egg is the kind that comes from a chicken, full of protein, vitamin D, B12, folate and iodine, and no sugar. I know that’s not what you’re interested in, so… At number two, the healthiest sweet treat is dark (or plain) chocolate. It has no milk products, so is generally suitable for vegans. The higher the percentage cocoa solids, the more nutrients in the chocolate, including iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, fibre and antioxidants. Choose an egg made with 65% or more cocoa solids. Next, milk chocolate contains cocoa solids plus milk products (condensed, liquid or powder) and lots of sugar. With around 20-25% cocoa solids there are some nutritional benefits, but they are minimal. White chocolate is made with a blend of cocoa butter, sugar, milk products and vanilla. It doesn’t contain any cocoa solids, and it tastes the sweetest of all types

of chocolate. As a blend of lots of different types of saturated fat and sugar, white chocolate has no nutritional benefits (sorry!).

Ruby chocolate was only released in 2017. Similar to white chocolate (though with some cocoa solids), the taste is supposed to be fruity. No one knows how it is made, but with its ingredient list it is probably closer in nutritional value to white chocolate.

word about people checking. Everyone assumes breast cancer won’t affect us at a young age but through my small network now of Breast Cancer Warriors, I know people as young as 21 who have it. This was the reason why I applied to be a Boobette for Coppafeel, so I can help educate younger girls and guys about checking their breasts. Early detection really is key.

Meet Steph Glanville, the kind and hardworking driving force behind popular local Facebook site Burghfield & Mortimer Gossip, who has spent years raising money for Macmillan. Having raised over £50,000 for the charity, in a cruel twist of fate, Steph has now found herself fighting her own cancer battle. Not only has her diagnosis fueled her fundraising, Steph really is a woman on a mission, determined to educate, support and spread the message to anyone with boobies that early detection is key and that you should always get them checked! Here’s what she told us Tell me a bit more about you, Steph. I’m 35 and a mummy, wife, employee and breast cancer warrior. I have four wonderful boys aged 2, 8, 9 and 10. I was diagnosed with stage 3, grade 3 breast cancer in September 2020. Luckily I found it before it had spread to other parts of my body. It started with a brown liquid coming from my nipple then weeks later I found the lump. I went straight to my GP... You have been going through chemo during lockdown. I’m currently on 6 out of 8 chemotherapy sessions. It’s been hard. Chemo is not my friend. The side effects aren’t pleasant and it sets me back for 5-7 days. Right now with Covid, it’s a lonely experience, too, but I have the best chemo nurse called Matteo. We laugh, I take goodies, we eat and we talk about the future. You have shown so much courage and are using your experience to fund raise, motivate others and raise awareness. Is this something you are happy to talk about? Yes of course. Don’t get me wrong, when I was diagnosed I was an emotional wreck. My chemo nurse actually turned around and told me to pull myself together. Positivity is key. From that day I put those big girl pants on and my cape and thought, I’m going to show this cancer. I need to be here for my boys and I need to spread the

Tell us about your fundraising for cancer charities? What kind of things have you done over the years and do you know how much you’ve raised? The fundraising mission started 11 years ago when I reached out to the owner at Trunkwell House about holding a ball for Macmillan Cancer. I’ve organised 3 charity balls in total, coffee mornings with bouncy castles, auctions, raffles, charity adult sports day. Over the years I’ve raised just over £50,000 for Macmillan. I have just become a ‘Boobette’, an ambassador for Coppafeel! who are an amazing breast cancer awareness charity. Coppafeel Boobette’s are all volunteers who have been diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 35, have had preventative surgery, a breast cancer scare at a young age or a strong connection to the disease. Using their stories, they inspire others to think differently about their lives and bodies, educating people about the importance of getting to know your boobs now, and making it a lifelong habit. What motivates you? My family is my driving force. I can’t not be here for my boys. I need to see them finish secondary school, get married, and be a nanny. I need to help educate people to know what to look out for so they don’t have to go through what I am going through. Tell us about Steph’s Army. Steph’s Army was formed by two wonderful women, Victoria Hopkins and Jem Piggott. They both run small local businesses in the area – ‘Malden Window Cleaning’, ‘Victoria’s Sponge and More’, ‘Jem’s Amazing Boredom Boxes’ and ‘Tinkers’. I know them through the Berkshire Small Business Network and instantly built a friendship. They wanted to do something for me and formed Steph’s Army. We raised over £5000 for Macmillan and are hoping to do something bigger and better this year so watch out! What would you like to achieve with it? I think the main aim of Steph’s Army is to raise awareness of breast cancer and make sure that everyone is checking, but if we can also raise money for the charities, even better.

catch up with Steph. It’s important to help her to spread the word about checking yourself to catch breast cancer early, so now that you’re reading this, why not do it now? In fact, why not make it part of your morning routine? If you would like to find out more about Macmillan or Coppafeel, you can visit their website :

GOING GREEK! THIS EASTER

Travel restrictions this Easter may call for a little kitchen culinary travel, so why not Greece, a country that celebrates this holiday big? Enjoy some easy-to-cook but tasty marinated slowcooked lamb with potatoes, village salad, and Greek wine! Traditionally, the marinated lamb was taken to the baker’s oven after the bread making finished for the day to cook! Living in Greece, most people I knew made their own Retsina, which if you have visited, you will be very familiar with this resin flavoured wine, served in the tavernas. They serve it with everything, and it certainly does not do injustice to this marinated lamb.

Greek Lamb

1.3 Kg Leg of lamb or shoulder 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice 5 Clove Garlic thinly sliced 2 Tbsp Dried Oregano A Slug of Olive Oil 1 Glass (250ml) dry White Wine 1Kg Baby potatoes

Greek Village Salad

chop ½ cucumber, 6 tomatoes, 2 red onions, and mix with olive oil and lemon juice or balsamic vinegar. Add kalamata olives and season to serve.

However, Greek wine production is greater than that, and a grape that is indigenous to Greece is Xinomavro. With a little digging, I found a wine merchant in Newbury called SJ Wines, who stock a wonderful Xinomavro blend, described; “Red forest fruits and cherries, supplemented by a perfume of rose petals, give this light-bodied Macedonian red vibrancy, while a scattering of spice adds sensuality to the mix”. A perfect red to transport you to a Greek island! I have never cooked this from a recipe! It is one that follows many questions answered with alacrity by my Greek family, that I just cook. In recent years, I have used a slow-cooker which makes this even more relaxing and easy. But I have written out measurements and timings here so that you can enjoy this wonderful dish and feast like you are in Greece!

Mandy McCleave

The day before, slit holes into lamb and insert the garlic slices. Pour the lemon and wine over. Cover and refrigerate until the next day. Next day, scrub the potatoes (peel if required) and microwave for 12 minutes. Place in the roasting dish or slow-cooker. Place the lamb on top. Oven- cook on 160 for 3-3 1/2 hours. Slow cooker- cook on low for 6-8hours. Meat should be falling apart to serve with a village salad Kali orexi! Enjoy!

Serve with Paranga! Available from www.sjwines.co.uk

HOW WE CAN HELP YOU: • Expert advice from an experienced practitioner & technical writer It’s that time of the year again when the government sets out its spending and taxation plans in what is commonly known as the Budget. Anticipated more than any other budget in recent times, the focus has been on how the Chancellor might be able to repair some of the damage wrought by COVID-19. In short, we will all be paying more tax in the future. As Chartered Financial Planners, the budget is a key date in our diary as the government sets out new rules around taxation which will impact each and every one of us. In some respects this budget was notable for the absence of some anticipated tax changes which didn’t happen. For example, many commentators were predicting rises in capital gains tax rates and cuts to higher rate pension tax relief. These didn’t happen this time around but will surely remain in the chancellor’s sights. Looking at some of the changes that were made in the Budget, I would comment on the following areas where good financial planning could minimise the impact of any tax rises. Pension Lifetime Allowance - The amount that you can save into a pension during your lifetime without paying additional tax charges will be frozen for the next five years. As a result, more and more people will sleepwalk into paying a tax that they never thought would affect them. Financial advice in this area is crucial.

WANT TO FEEL THIS GOOD ABOUT YOUR FINANCAL PLANNING?

Inheritance Tax Allowances - The inheritance tax threshold will also be frozen for the next five years. Home owners in the South of England will be disproportionately impacted as house prices continue to rise. Understanding your potential liability and the options available here will be crucial to prevent your beneficiaries paying unnecessary tax on their inheritance. Capital Gains Tax Allowances – Again, frozen for 5 years. This makes it even more important to hold investments in the most tax efficient ‘wrappers’. Investments held outside of tax efficient products (e.g. 2nd homes, share portfolios etc.) will incur more taxation on disposal. Corporation Tax Rates - Rising from 2023. Again, making financial planning for small business owners even more essential and highlighting once more the irrefutable argument for extracting profits via pension contributions to reduce Corporation Tax. Personal Income Tax Allowances – Frozen. This will mean we all pay more tax in the future. Understanding how paying into pensions and investments which offer generous tax breaks can help to limit the impact of the changes and help to keep more money in your pocket is essential. In these tricky times with volatile markets and looming tax increases, never has it been so important to get good financial planning advice from trusted experts in their field. In our world, such changes give rise to opportunities for the well informed.

Leases are a depreciating asset: their value can be significantly affected by the length of time left on the term of the lease. Are you running out of time to protect the value in your property? Many high-street lenders will refuse to lend against a property which has a lease with a term of less than 85 years. If your lease has less than 85 years, it is likely that it will have a significant negative impact on the value of your property. Many potential Buyers who have a mortgage will be excluded from buying your property. You will need a lease extension.

What is a lease extension?

A lease extension is the agreement between the Tenant and Landlord which extends the term of the original lease. There are two methods by which you can extended a lease: the statutory (‘formal’) route and the voluntary (‘informal’) route. Voluntary lease extension A Tenant can approach their Landlord at any time on an informal basis and agree a price (“premium”). The Tenant has more flexibility regarding the term and premium and has the ability to negotiate with the Landlord freely. During informal negotiations a Landlord may require an increase to the Tenant’s existing ground rent, which could put off

future Buyers and Lenders. Sometimes negotiations fail and a formal lease extension may be the only way forward.

Statutory lease extension

A statutory lease extension permits a Tenant to exercise their right to extend their lease under s42 of the Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1993. To qualify, the Tenant must have owned the property for more than two years, and the lease term must be for more than 21 years. The Tenant is entitled to a 90-year extension to their existing term, with ground rent reduced to zero (a “peppercorn” rent) The Tenant will require a surveyor to carry out a valuation of the property and advise of the appropriate price to offer to the Landlord in the notice.

Adam Tudor-Lane

DRIVes... Did you know that EV sales jumped by a whopping 185.9% last year compared to 2019? While the world is thrown into turmoil, it seems people are thinking about the way they use their cars. Now it’s time for two wheels to make the battery only leap. Motorbikes and scooters produce very little in the way of emissions compared to their four-wheeled brethren, but with many cities across the globe looking to ban all combustion-engine vehicles at some point or another, it’s only a matter of time before the humble motorcycle becomes an electric-only machine. With that in mind, I braved the winter weather on a Qooder Oxygen to tell you all about it.

underneath the seat by removing one battery. Naturally, the range drops by half, but it means you don’t have to lug around a helmet at your final destination. Charging takes five hours to get to 80%, or 6 to get to the full 100. As there’s precious little room in the scooter, all the charging gubbins is separate. Starting the Oxygen is much like any other bike, key in, turn…but then there’s silence. Looking at the large backlit display, it goes through a self-check, then gives you a large ‘OK :-)’ and then you’re ready to go. Simply hold the left-hand brake and twist the throttle a little until you feel the thing want to go, release the brake, and you’re off. You’ll get an electric whine and a slight woosh as you set off, with the futuristic sound of motors returning whenever you accelerate. It turns a few heads, that’s for sure. Being belt driven, there’s no rattling, no clunking of gears; the most notable thing while out on my ride was the plastic tag attached to the key flapping against the bodywork. It really is THAT quiet to ride. Acceleration is instant; torque is limited to 35Nm, which is incredibly high when you look at the likes of my own little MSX 125 and its 10.9 Nm. It’s nowhere near as ferocious as an electric car, but it still gives you a reassuring shove whenever you accelerate. Due to the batteries’ weight, the Oxygen feels pretty solid; that lightweight, bare looking exterior is deceiving. So are the rather narrow tyres. The 16-inch wheels are somewhere between a mountain bike and a traditional moped in terms of thickness, but it always feels surefooted, even in the damp. In colder weather you’ll get less range, batteries don’t like to be chilly and these have no warming or cooling abilities like a electric car has. Even so the range only dropped to 37 miles on the chilliest of days that I ventured out on the Qooder, that’s still plenty to get around town or to commute on.

The Oxygen is a zero-emission scooter designed explicitly for built-up urban environments where congestion makes driving a car painful. There’s a choice of a 2.65 or 3 KW version; the one seen here is the former; therefore, it has a top speed of around 30 MPH, the beefier 3KW model is capable of 50 MPH. Range on them both is 40-50 miles depending on the outside temperature. Beneath the seats sit two huge batteries, each weighing a considerable amount; make sure you’ve had your Weetabix in the morning if you’re planning to lift these up and out. There’s no real need to take them out, as they can be charged in situ, but you can also fit a helmet

16

The only thing that really holds it back is the top speed, while it would be fine for pure urban driving in town centres, the 30-35 MPH top speed would be pretty hairy on a single carriageway. I stuck to diving around the local housing estates, a few are thankfully joined up by underpasses and bridges. If you’re going to find yourself on more open roads, opt for the 3KW model. Prices are around the £4,500 mark, but are to be revised at some point this year. The Qooder will be eligible for the plug-in motorcycle grant, which would see £1,500 knocked off that RRP. Facts at a glance: Battery: 2.65 kW Top Speed: 30 MPH Range: 40-50 Miles Weight: 93 kg

T

he nation is anticipating a summer of parties, weddings and festivals as lockdown starts to ease and, as we all know, key to a wonderful event is wonderful food. A good event organiser or party host will be keen to choose food that appeals to the majority of guests. This is why budget-savvy brides and high-end party planners alike are opting for food which was once considered low-brow. Out goes the caviar and in comes family favourites like bacon baps and bangers and mash. This, however, isn’t just plain food, this is good food…

Despite the simple, familiar ingredients, these family dishes are often being embellished for the occasion with a twist to the presentation or to the original recipe. It’s no secret that Simon Cowell served Shepherd’s pie and mini Yorkshire pudding hors d’oeuvres at his 50th birthday bash. Similarly, much to their delight, the guests at Kate Winslet’s wedding were served bangers and mash. But it’s not just celebrities getting in on the action, this really has become a food trend and it is expected to only grow in popularity as events take off in 2021.

From Weddings to Private Parties, Reunions, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Corporate Events and larger family & friends gettogethers, the humble sausage is fast becoming the party food of choice for locals!

With special BBQs which can cook up to 120 sausages at a time, their traditional and herby creations are, once again, able to add a touch of modern, rustic charm to events of all sizes as we ease our way back to normality. Whether it’s a festival, a themed event, a post lockdown afternoon soirée with friends and family or a rescheduled ‘special’ birthday bash, the team at MSC offer a tasty way to give your guests a treat without breaking the bank - and you won’t have to do the washing up either! If you’d like to find how the MSC can turn your party into a ‘banging’ event, please call Glyn on 07825 885848 or visit www.mortimersausage.co.uk

Since they started grinding, binding, mixing and stuffing their (now legendary) selection of tasty sausages back in 2012, the ‘Sausageers’ behind the Mortimer Sausage Company have seen their fayre enjoyed by local individuals as well as community events including Burghfest, The Box Kart Bash (indeed, MSC’s own well -engineered kart, ‘The Mortimer Sausage Rocket’ has won the event three times in a row) and Mortimer’s Fun Day. The team have also been busy catering for weddings, evening receptions and a number of private parties.

a n n a o J ey Luml

Joanna Lumley proves 75 is no number as her incredible career takes another step forward.

20

P

erhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised to see Joanna Lumley step into the second movie in the Croods franchise.

Not only is the Brit iconic, instantly identifiable, ubiquitously admired and, let’s be honest, entertainment royalty, she also harbours a true passion for the strange creatures we share the earth with. Okay, so in the instance of the animated band of cartoon misfits in The Croods: A New Age, we’re talking about creatures of the prehistoric variety, but in many ways you feel the actress is most at home when separated from the chaos and complexities of her fellow human beings. “I think I am a bit like that,” she laughs. “It's not that I don't like people… or love people, in fact – indeed, if I think about it I adore people, I adore interactions. We are only as energised and infused and interesting as the people around us, but I must say there's always been something endearing about the animal world and the natural world; in the environment around us. “It’s something that isn't complicated by conversation or opinion or conjecture and that's really what you get when you look into the wild - it's such a simple existence and I think, as people, very often, we have the ability to complicate things way beyond how they need to be. Just look at the world around you right now - it's a mess.” The star of Absolutely Fabulous is of course entirely correct. From Brexit to Trump to racial division, the environment, Covid, poverty, addiction and everything else that embeds itself in our

daily lives, the current era probably won't be looked back upon as a positive time for human life on the planet. Indeed, our perception of the celebrity A-list has probably dipped to an all-time low too given the realities of our own lives and the detachment many people feel towards the Hollywood elite. There is at least a ray of light being beamed back from these actors, creators and innovators when feelgood animated excellence comes our way, and thankfully that's what we have with the Croods. The story follows on from the original animated movie released in 2013 to rich critical acclaim. The family find a walled-in paradise that looks the perfect place to set up

home, though quickly find the neighbouring Bettermans a difficult force to live alongside. Yet they are thrust together to fight for the greater good when cataclysmic events threaten everything they have considered secure. For Lumley, the whole experience has been a delight. “Coming into a project like this halfway through can always be tricky,” she says. “There is obviously so much that has gone on before it and in the early parts at least you do feel as if you are playing catchup. “The other thing with animated work is that there is a real feeling of separation between yourself and

the other actors as almost everything is done by yourself and in isolation… which I guess during the lockdown is pretty handy! However, it's a very different way of working compared to normal films where everyone is brought together in one place at one time to get the job done.” Undeterred, the actress, who shot to fame in The New Avengers in the mid-Seventies, has thrown herself into the role of Queen Ophelia. “I’ve not played many Queens over the years so this is something a bit different for me. Am I a Queen in the way I go about my business? Not essentially, I'm a little bit too out there for that, so it's good to try out these new personas,” she laughs.

As far as her other projects are concerned, Lumley isn’t slowing down despite the fact she hits 75 in May. A second series of ITV sitcom Finding Alice has just been announced after a top viewing figure of almost eight million was achieved during the first series. And away from the small screen, this passionate philanthropist continues to fill her time with projects and initiatives that make her happy… which returns us back to the subject of animals. Lumley's work with Compassion for World Farming is well documented, and at a time when the

Coronavirus pandemic has positioned focus of people predominantly onto themselves, their friends and their loved ones, there's a fear that animal and wildlife welfare may suffer as a result. “I’m really keen that we continue the good work we have progressed over the past decade or so as regards ecology, animal protection and farming practices, because these wonderful creatures really do need our help in any way we can offer it,” she says. “Some of the cruelty we see to animals remains shocking, and so widespread. Compassion in World Farming, for instance, provides a focus, if you like - protecting the welfare of animals in transportation. “It’s just one strand but it’s an important one. Some changes – such as talking about massive shifts in farming methods, and human acknowledgment of how animals are brought to the table, will take a long time; but they were saying the same thing about recycling in the Eighties, and look at us now, globally. Look at how good we have become – it’s second nature. “It’s something I’m really passionate about. The ship is a very large one and it takes a long time to stop, and even longer to turn, but that shouldn’t discourage us, no matter what we set out to achieve in life.”

Are you t u o b a d e i rr o w going back to g n i v a e l & k r o w your pet?

I

t has been reported that pet purchases were more popular than ever before during lockdown. Having a pet for company and entertainment is a great idea, but what happens when you return to work at the office and all the routine that your pet has come to know - and trust is turned upside down?

Anxiety in pets is a real thing and can show itself through unwanted behaviours such as chewing, scratching, crying or soiling. Some dogs may pace or become withdrawn and it can be upsetting to see. But what can you do to help your pet transition to the newest ‘new normal’.

Start by leaving the house more frequently and slowly increasing the duration each time. This will help your pet get used to the idea of you being away, and that you always come back. Don’t underestimate your pet’s ability to learn and recognise details in your daily routine. If you normally wear certain clothes for work, carry a particular bag, or give them a special treat before you leave, begin these “rituals” again.

Of course, many people will be considering booking that longed-for vacation this summer, but if you are able to get away, how will that affect your new pet? It’s hard when you can’t explain to your pet what is happening and that you will return, but there are some high quality boarding options locally which should set your mind at rest. Reviews and word of mouth are always the best place to start and the grand reunion really is the best bit of every holiday.

If your dog normally spent their time in a crate while you were away at work, you may want to consider having them take their naps there again, to get used to your absence.

Lockdown has left no-one untouched, including our pets, so do invest some time to help alleviate any changes and make that return to work a smooth one for every member of the family.

People benefit from a healthy, balanced diet and there is evidence that improved nutrition could work wonders for your dog, too. Vitamin deficiency can lead to psychological unwellness in dogs and Vitamin A, Vitamin E and Vitamins B1, B6, and B12 are all very important in keeping a dog healthy and mentally balanced.

ROCK YOUR DOG’S WORLD! The Rockster’s story is the story of a genuine street dog found on the steps of a little beach restaurant, south of Naples. Over the years, we could never understand Rockster’s refusal of commercial pet food until an expert explained that as a genuine street dog, he was genetically wired to avoid anything that could be harmful. So we set out creating a canine superfood that he would genuinely enjoy eating, nurture his gut microbiome and in the spirit of “let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food” might be able to enhance and extend his life. Some 18 years later, and having gained an international reputation as one of the world’s leading canine superfood brands, the Rockster family continues to believe in the power of natural food to preserve and restore health, and consider the gut a vital organ to be nurtured. We know what we put into our bodies and Rockster believes that dogs deserve the same! Each recipe has been made with an optimised combination of fresh human grade muscle meat, vital inner organs, and powerful bio-organic superfoods designed to make them delicious as well as life-enhancing in every way for dogs. Hailed as “more than just food”, Rockster has created a new calibre of life enhancing nutrition for dogs. The finest human-grade organic ingredients are gently poached in the can together with natural prebiotics to nurture your dog’s microbiome. Certified as a “Superfood for Dogs” Rockster is scientifically formulated to rock your dog’s world and nurture them from inside! •

100% certified bio-organic meat comes from animals certified to be free of exposure to any antibiotics, chemicals, waste materials and pesticides

W in an Alpaca Experience! Courtesy of Mortimer Alpacas

Cuteness Alert... How would you like to win the chance to take a summer stroll with some alpacas, give them a little stroke and even join them for a picnic? Well, here at Village Eye, we are delighted to say that is exactly what we are offering in, what is possibly one of our cutest competitions so far this year! During lockdown, ‘fun and frolics’ pictures of Mortimer Alpacas’ 6 adorable young boysGeorge, Zippy, Bungle, Vincent, Valentino and Cappuccino, adorned local social media sites, bringing a smile to many of us. A year on and the boys have now been joined by two new cuties, Sooty and Teddy. And, as if the Alpacas weren’t adorable enough, it seems that a couple of Pygmy goats have also joined them! As lockdown eases and spring arrives, we’ve teamed up with the lovely folks over at Mortimer Alpacas who are kindly giving the chance for one lucky reader to win an alpaca experience for up to 10 people! The prize will include a 90 minute private walk & picnic session with plenty of opportunities to get to know the little fellas in a beautiful countryside setting. The prize is valid for 12 months. Alpacas by nature, although curious, are normally very shy and not naturally forthcoming. The boys in Mortimer, however, have been completely socialised and have the right temperament for socialising with humans. They love being hand fed, petted, and even enjoy spending time together with human friends around picnic tables and posing for quirky selfies! For more information visit www.mortimer-alpacas.co.uk

How to enterwww.villageeye.co.uk For your chance to win this exciting prize, visit & answer the following question:

Mortimer pupils are

E)

AND THEY WANT YOUR PENS (PLEAS

Eco Warriors at Mortimer St John’s have been busy completing weekly eco work during the most recent lockdown. The Eco Schools programme is having a huge impact on the pupils’ learning and they are making positive changes every day. What an inspiration! Here’s just some of what the Eco Warriors have been doing. RECYCLING PENS TO HELP ENDANGERED ANIMALS Unwanted biros and felt tip pens are collected and sent off to Terracycle and in return, the school receives Terracycle credits, which they spend with WWF and The Shark Trust to help rhinos, elephants, polar bears and sharks from becoming endangered. So far they have saved 120kg of pens from landfill and donated £135. If you would like to recycle old pens, just pop them in the blue ‘hippo’ storage bin by the school gates. Eco Warrior Bethan says “Please, please drop your old pens off to us, tell your friends too! The more pens we collect and save from landfill the more endangered animals we can help!” Eco warriors have also written and encouraged local hair salon ‘Adam & Eve’ to collect pumps and triggers, local pet shop ‘Pristine Pups’ to collect pet food packages and ‘Oaktree Dental Practice’ to collect toothpaste brushes and tubes .

TREES The children wanted to help the planet by planting trees. The school is lucky to have a wonderful oak tree in the playground so acorns were chosen to plant. Eco Warriors wrote to Englefield estate to seek some advice. They were delighted to be asked to help and made a video to share with the children on how to plant acorns and nurture them into beautiful saplings. Eco Warrior Mason says “It’s important to plant trees because they give us oxygen!” LITTER PICKING The Eco Warriors are extremely passionate about keeping Mortimer village clean and protecting the wildlife. One Eco Warrior, upset by how much litter he sees lying around, has taken to a daily walk with his mum to pick up litter. They have even started an Instagram page. Eco Warrior Eddie says “I started litter picking because I would see lots of rubbish thrown on the ground and not in the bins. People even throw their household rubbish in the woods! It’s important to pick up litter because it makes our village look cleaner and it’s good for the environment and wildlife.” You can follow him on #ECOWARRIOREDDIE

“A wonderful nursery in a fantastic setting. The staff are so caring, friendly and to me it felt like a family for my little ones whilst we were away from them. I cannot recommend Jubilee highly enough.” (Review from parent, daynurseries.co.uk 2020)

Children at Jubilee’s nurseries immerse themselves in all that this time of year has to offer. With the nurseries set in 60 acres of private gardens, woodland and farmland, the children get first-hand experience of growing vegetables with our gardener, going on bug hunts, hatching eggs - encountering life cycles, and welcoming new lambs on the farm. And what better way than to celebrate Easter than with Jubilee’s annual Easter Bonnet Parade! Celebrated at both nurseries, the children, parents and staff can’t resist showing off their creativity, and this year is no different! ON TV with ROB BARNES

A heart-rending tale of healing, and the power of community and friendship After an industrial collapse effectively wipes the working town of Empire off the map, without a job and mourning the death of her husband, Fern (Frances McDormand) sells all of her belongings and embarks on a journey across the American West living only in her van. Whilst taking a seasonal job at an Amazon fulfilment centre she’s invited to a desert gathering where she meets the organiser Bob who introduces her to their nomadic community life and support system that he provides. Taking jobs at RV parks she strikes up close friendships with fellow nomad Swankie who teaches her the importance of self sufficiency, and Dave who attempts to win her heart. In this tale of healing, displacement and unwavering friendship, Fern strives to break free from the shackles of the past, to embrace a new way of life. What strikes you immediately about Nomadland is its unique cinematic style. There is little of the heightened drama, scripted dialogue and formatted plot points that the mainstream typically serves up. Instead the camera floats and follows Fern’s every move in a way that is both unobtrusive and natural, it’s like you’re sitting on her shoulder breathing everything in just as she does. In keeping with it’s documentary style Frances McDormand inhabits the character of Fern with such authenticity that it’s completely spellbinding. It’s not what’s happening on the surface - her words and actions - that draw you in but what’s happening behind the eyes. Every subtle glance, sigh, smile, every gesture she shares gives us a window into her heart and soul that pierces through the screen. And it’s not just McDormand that brings this natural quality to the film, I was unsurprised to learn that many of the cast are played by real-life nomads. The cinematography perfectly captures the vast, endless vistas of the Arizona landscape, so much so it’s like a character all in itself. The setting and style not only feels incredibly soothing but it’s entirely appropriate and respectful to the subject matter. Living with the challenges of grief, financial loss, and forced into a new way of living Fern harbours feelings that many of us feel at times, arguably more than ever over the last year.

Accompanied by a beautifully delicate score there’s no denying the melancholic tone of the film that for some may feel too gentle and contemplative, but simmering under the surface at all times is the all important life-affirming message of friendship and community. I passionately believe it is the job of movie makers to entertain us, but more importantly move us. The latter of which is exactly what Chloé Zhao has achieved, a stunning film that holds up a mirror to real life in all its understated glory. After winning a Best Picture and Best Director Golden Globe, Nomadland is tipped for more success at the Oscars. I for one hope it wins big, and urge anyone to give it a go. 5/5

As pole fitness gains popularity, we take a look at why people are raving about it!

Did you know that pole fitness is now recognised as a highly beneficial form of physical and mental exercise?

Available as an aerobic and anaerobic workout, it combines physical artistry with strength and endurance. Growing in popularity, Pole fitness moves incorporate climbing, spinning and body inversions. Twirling and swinging routines are also common but the emphasis of modern pole fitness classes is on having fun, rather than trying to be too seductive! Whilst most classes moved online throughout lockdown, April 12th will see the return of many face to face classes. Fitness benefits Pole Fitness is excellent for toning key muscles groups too. Many forms of dance are brilliant for toning and streamlining the body’s muscles. However, pole fitness takes this a step further as it frequently requires the

participant to support their entire body weight with a single arm. It also builds core strength, as well as toning the thighs and lower leg muscles. Burning calories Pole dancing for a sustained period of time can burn as many as 250 to 300 calories, equivalent to a short bike ride or jog. If you’re struggling to find exercise motivation, this fun and energetic dance style could be perfect for you. Overcome mental stress As with other forms of exercise, pole fitness causes the body to release endorphin hormones into your brain. These endorphins make you feel happier, healthier and – theoretically – more energetic. Improves posture If you find yourself slumped in front of a computer every day at work, with your spine resembling a squashed banana, pole fitness could

be the exercise to get you standing tall once again. Stretching and toning the entire body, it offers great exercise for those wanting to improve their natural posture. What to expect from your class Beginner pole fitness classes are usually an all-female affair, although some instructors will offer teaching for men too. Initial classes serve to highlight some of the key pole fitness moves, setting them to rhythmic music. However, before you even begin pole dancing, your teacher will show you how to correctly mount the pole - which is not as easy as most people believe. Overall, pole dancing classes are fun and you’ll soon learn the ropes in a friendly and sociable environment. When it started to enter the mainstream, pole fitness or fitness was still tainted by its strip club reputation,

but a visit to a beginners class will soon alleviate any concerns... These days, pole fitness is a great form of exercise, pure and simple. It is hugely popular amongst people of all ages, shapes, sizes and social groups too. So what are you waiting for?! With an array of Pole fitness classes on offer in this area, a quick call to them or visit to their website will provide you with class times for all levels. Happy spinning!
