Summer's Coming: Has your car got a nasty niff?
Now that summer is on its way, you may be busy planning a trip to the beach or venturing further afield by car...
So, you’ve loaded the car with the family, luggage, sunglasses, maps, sandwiches and the kitchen sink... only to discover a few miles down the road, the blowers aren’t really getting that cold - and worse still, a rather unpleasant smell as your air conditioning works overtime in an attempt to keep you all cool. Sound familiar?

This ‘nasty-niff’ is caused by dust, dirt and moisture that has stuck to the evaporator of your air conditioning unit deep within your dashboard. Because the evaporator attracts moisture, it sticks to the surface and dust particles and other dirt will eventually build up on it. Over time this then becomes the perfect breeding ground for mould and fungi and this is what causes the smell. What a lovely thought!
Getting rid of the smell may not be straightforward. You could try running the system on maximum heat for at least 10 minutes to dry the condenser out. This may remove the problem temporarily, but it is likely to return. There are kits available, online which act as disinfectants and are sprayed into the air conditioning system to kill the bacteria, but again, these often only provide only a temporary respite from the pong.
For a more permanent solution this summer, Spratley’s in Mortimer is offering an Air Conditioning Freshen-up and De-bug for just £29.99 inc VAT. A full Air conditioning re-gas is also available from £99 inc VAT. Just ask. For further information, free advice or to make a booking for your vehicle, please give us a call.
