OVERVIEW

Z: UNLEASHED

Following the highly popular Z750, Kawasaki proudly presents the newest model in the Z family. 40 years after the birth of the original Z, the Z800 takes the Z design in an aggressive new direction. While the design of its popular predecessor may be considered somewhat reserved, for the Z800 designers were given free rein to pursue a more vivid expression of the Z brand for the mid-size class. Engineers were equally unconstrained when it came to engine and chassis design. With increased engine displacement and increased chassis performance delivering even greater exhilaration, the Z800 offers an exciting and expressive choice of ride that makes other options seem pale in comparison.

KEY FEATURES

UNLEASHED DESIGN

Given the freedom to create an unrestrained design for the Z800, designers pursued a much more aggressive and visceral appearance. The Z800 exudes palpable presence – less a machine and more a living, breathing entity. Numerous street-fighter touches contribute to the more aggressive package.

Bodywork * Compact headlamp cowl uses a multi-facet design to create a more aggressive, glaring visage for the Z800. The fierce appearance is one of the key styling elements of the aggressive new design.

* From the side the engine shrouds and under-cowl appear to grip the engine, creating the image of a predator holding prey in its mouth.

KEY FEATURES

UNLEASHED PERFORMANCE: ENGINE

With its larger displacement, the Z800 engine offers increased performance at all rpm. The greater performance is especially noticeable in the low-mid range, adding to greater everyday usability as well increased riding exhilaration. Shorter final gearing complements the new engine character and emphasises the Z800’s stronger acceleration.

806 cm3 In-Line Four engine * Responsive liquid-cooled engine with efficient 4-valve, DOHC cylinder head displaces 806 cm3 from a bore and stroke of 71.0 x 50.9 mm. With bore increased from 68.4 mm to 71.0 mm, the new engine offers greater performance at all rpm.

* Fuel injection system is managed by a high-precision ECU. Ultra-fine injectors and larger-diameter 34 mm throttle bodies (previously 32 mm) with sub-throttles offer ultra-smooth response across the rev-range.

* Intake and exhaust ports, designed to suit the engine’s larger displacement, move the peak torque to a lower rpm for stronger low-mid range and greater everyday usability. * Intake funnels of two different lengths optimise airflow: funnels #1, #4 are short; funnels #2, #3 are long. (Previously, all intake funnels were of a uniform length.) 2013MY ZR800A/B: Z800

KEY FEATURES * Longer intake ducts (36.5 mm >> 41.5 mm) also suit the increased engine displacement and help to move the peak torque to a lower rpm. The ducts are also wider to accommodate the larger-diameter throttle bodies. * Cylinder is an aluminium die-cast piece with plated bores (previously gravity cast with steel liners). Its open-deck construction (previously closed deck) contributes to a weight savings of approximately 1 kg.

* To offset the weight gained by larger-diameter pistons, piston height was reduced (47.2 mm >> 40.2 mm). The new pistons are approximately 10% lighter, reducing reciprocating weight. * Larger oil jet diameter (0.8 mm >> 1.2 mm) increases piston cooling capacity, contributing to increased piston durability. * Crankshaft journal fillets have a wider radius (1.5 mm >> 2.0 mm), offering increased durability to cope with the engine’s increased power. * Oil pan features redesigned internal ribbing for increased durability. * New cam chain with smaller side plates reduces the amount of the chain that contacts the chain guide for reduced operating friction. * New intake valve seat material offers increased wear and heat resistance.

Exhaust system * Curved exhaust header pipes were made as long as possible. Equaliser tubes connect headers #1-#4 and #2-#3. Both features contribute to increased low-mid range performance.

* Dual 300-cell catalysers in the collector pipe ensure that emissions regulations are met. * Unitised exhaust device positioned just upstream of the silencer entrance helps to “tune” back-pressure waves for enhanced response in the low-mid range. (ZR800A/B only)

KEY FEATURES * Short-style exhaust system eliminates the centre pipe and uses a short silencer for increased mass centralisation and a strong street-fighter image.

* Silencer’s complex cross-section enables the requisite volume while ensuring an ample lean angle.

Transmission, shift mechanism and drivetrain * Smooth-shifting 6-speed transmission has a gear for every situation, from low-speed city traffic to high-speed highway use. * Shorter final gearing care of a larger rear sprocket (43T >> 45T) contributes to stronger acceleration. * Finishing treatment for 1st output gear and 5th input and output gears (dry cut >> shaving) deliver increased gear tooth durability. * Revised layout for the clutch release shaft (5 mm longer, rotated 5o clockwise) offers improved clutch operation. * Stronger spring setting load for the transmission’s position lever contributes to improved shift feel. * Revised shape for the change shaft’s over-shift stopper offers increased durability.

KEY FEATURES

UNLEASHED PERFORMANCE: CHASSIS

While maintaining a highly sporty nature, the Z800’s friendly character makes it an accommodating mount even for beginners. Increased road holding performance, and hence traction, on all types of road surfaces enables both sporty and friendly riding characteristics.

Frame * Chassis geometry results in a package with nimble, responsive handling characteristics, together with a very stable feel. Posture is slightly forward leaning (front lowered, rear raised), contributing to the more aggressive appearance.

ZR800C/D: Z800 e version MODEL INFORMATION

PAGE 12

KEY FEATURES * The Z800’s high-tensile steel tubular backbone main frame is based on the Z750R, with revised rigidity balance.

* Use of a cast aluminium engine sub-frame allows the front engine mounts to be positioned behind the cylinder, close to the engine’s centre of gravity. This reduces engine vibration transmitted to the rider (particularly at the handlebars), greatly contributing to ride quality. The engine sub-frame also allows the main frame construction to be slimmer, and contributes to the optimised rigidity balance. * Pipe used to connect the front of the engine sub-frames (from left to right) contributes to optimised frame rigidity (in particular, torsional rigidity) for increased handling stability.

* Through the use of a combination of rigid and rubber mounts, chassis tuning delivers a very planted feel and a high level of feedback. The result is a superb level of control: the rider is better able to understand what the bike is doing.

KEY FEATURES * ABS models (ZR800B/D) feature a compact and lightweight Nissin motorcycle ABS unit. The unit is located under the rider’s seat, contributing to increased room for storage under the passenger seat.

Ergonomics * The relationship between pegs, seat and handlebars was designed to enhance communication between rider and machine, giving the rider a confidenceinspiring feeling of control that perfectly complements its accurate and precise handling qualities.

* Fuel tank is narrow at the rear, making it easy for riders to grip the bike with their knees.

* New seat design contributes to more comfortable ergonomics. * Revised shift lever arrangement (now on a separate axis from the footpeg) enables an even narrower footpeg position, further facilitating control. * The overall position is spacious and relaxed, helping to reduce fatigue on long highway rides, and upright enough to facilitate seeing ahead in urban riding situations. * The slim overall design (Z800 seat and cover design are actually slimmer than its predecessor’s) and a natural riding position also make it easier for riders to reach the ground with their feet.
