Paris Jewellers’ Co-Owner Chau Lui Shares Her Latest Collection Inspired by Inclusivity
The Paris Jewellers origin story is the Canadian dream: a couple leaves Vietnam with their two infant daughters to seek a better life in Canada only to find unimaginable success. “My mom would share with me what they were trying to escape back home and what they were trying to build here,” says co-owner Chau Lui. After decades of uncompromising hard work and a commitment to excellence, the company is a national institution.

With a sparkling new collection full of pieces that transcend trends and fads, Lui clarifies that inclusivity matters. Lui and her sister have become more open about their history in recent years — something that they initially found terrifying. “We have employees depending on us, and we knew that since we’re not originally from Canada, if we shared our story that people may…” she pauses, “choose not to shop with us.”
Lui’s fear speaks volumes because it comes from both personal and professional experiences of racism. Instances of disgruntled customers questioning the “Canadianness” of the business are rare but not unheard of and have become
more prevalent during a pandemic marred with anti-Asian racism and rhetoric. Lui chooses to
address hate and ignorance with grace, one of the founding principles of Paris Jewellers. Sharing her story matters more than ever for herself, her children and other Asian-Canadians. She
describes what it felt like to be in kindergarten, barely speaking English, feeling out of place and unable to communicate what she needed. These
feelings are not so uncommon; who among us can’t relate to feeling lonely or confused?
The choice to embrace people of diverse backgrounds permeates Paris Jewellers, from their company culture to the collections they create. The response to the company’s origin story has been “overwhelmingly positive,” Lui says, which is something that both she and her sister have found comforting and inspiring, hence this stunning collection that offers a little something for everyone.
