Celebrating 40 years in Business:

The Journey & Legacy of Era Rowles In 1995, gallerist Era Rowles was honoured as December’s Woman of Vision. And the next year, she joined the Women of Vision Advisory Board. It was the first program of its kind to recognize successful women who have made a difference in their community. Era also joined the Downtown Rotary Club in 1995. She was one of only seven other women in a club numbering over 250 members. Over the next 25 years, she held several senior positions within the club and sponsored over 15 women. She attributes much of her success with Rotary. "I had every business resource at my fingertips and developed many friendships with like minded people. Rotary was like getting an MBA degree on the go… for free…" In 2005, Era was awarded the "Four Avenues of Service Award" from Rotary International for contributions and service to the community. To this day, she continues to be one of Edmonton’s most successful entrepreneurs.

LeMarchand Mansion. What year did you open Rowles and Company?

In 1981, I was a full time Special Education Teacher in a maximum security unit, working with challenged children. I discovered that using art related activities improved and promoted both their educational success and their damaged self image. If I could affect the success of these students, I could only imagine my influence in the world at large. I had always wanted to start my own business. I had heard of an art dealer from Toronto who was running a successful art business out of her penthouse apartment. So, in September 1981, I rented a 2400 sq. ft. penthouse apartment on the 20th floor of College Plaza and set up 80% of the apartment to be an Art Gallery.

We were one of the first Galleries in Alberta to

Party of the Peculiar In Celebration of a Weird & Wonderful Season We all have our unique holiday personalities. From those who begin decorating the day after Hallowe’en to the last-minute shoppers and cold-night carolers, this time of year brings out the best and the bizarre in all of us. Inspired by company Christmas party character tropes and boisterous British pantomime, we teamed up with The Bay at Kingsway to create a visual story celebrating the gorgeous and the grotesque. In this story, juxtaposition is king; the beautiful and the macabre are one and the same.

Fashionably Festive A Men’s Style Guide for Holiday Occasions Snow is officially on the ground, which means we’re no longer dressing for Fall, gentlemen. It’s time to embrace the festivities and give the merino wool turtleneck you’ve been ignoring some love. Holiday fashion can be a challenge; we must balance warmth with style and kitsch with class—“oh, what fun it is” to don your quirky Fairisle sweater at the office, but to what end? Knowing how to dress for every occasion is vital, and this season, we’re in favour of some elevation.

Evolving Art of Gift Giving Skipping the traditional hustle of shopping, Krista Ference brings a new way to shop for gifts A well curated closet makes a real difference in finding out exactly what clothes you feel good in. We often find ourselves buying similar items, patterns or colours as we are drawn to a certain style, making shopping mistakes, or creating clutter. That’s where the observant sense of style and personal brand of Krista Ference comes in. One look at Ference tells all about her distinguished style; her outfit is a perfect combination of trend, infinite elegance and a fantastic fit. She loves shopping, fashion, and finding a perfect wardrobe for her clients, but above all, she loves giving gifts to others, making her a perfect person to offer guidance when it comes to holiday shopping.

Her

resources reach far; while Krista works with many local boutiques, and she’s also a part

of the pilot project with Holt Renfrew. After closing their brick-and-mortar store here in Edmonton, they realized that this is a great way to have a representative in the city, making Ference the first stylist in the country to launch this special partnership. Working with both Calgary and Toronto locations to build a remote seller and stylist program, means that Edmonton still has access to Holt Renfrew’s items along with Ference’s expert advice, that comes as a complimentary service to her clients. When it comes to gifts, Ference is a real expert, whether it’s Christmas, Valentine’s Day, birthday, or any other occasion. First, she learns about the person she’s buying for and then takes it off her client’s plate. She then goes on a mission to find an item that the person would love. Once it’s found, it’s perfectly packaged and delivered, in the most personalized way possible. White glove service all the way, saving you time and delivering it with exceptional service. Entering a busy time of the year, Ference says it ramps up earlier and earlier every year. Gift guides start popping up as early as November 1st, but the real kick-off is Black Friday, after which the true holiday shopping begins. And it’s her favorite time. Once the gift is delivered, she makes a point of connecting with the client to check if the gift was a hit, and so far, it’s always been a success.

www.modernluxuria.com

- 42 -

One of the nice perks of the job? She can shop for her family at the same time, and as a self-professed shopaholic, she finds a thing or two for herself. Fashion advice from Ference: remembering how special we feel when we dress up, head to toe, and adding a bit of sparkle. Maybe this is the year to bring back that decorum, light the candles, dress well, and we don’t need to have a house full of people to do that. It doesn’t need to be extravagant, but small things like a new candle, a cozy throw, and a nice outfit can significantly change our mood, and add a lot of joy. Another piece of advice; always look at your closet first. For this photoshoot, Ference pulled these pieces from her closet. “Even though our instinct is to run and buy a new dress or outfit each time the occasion arises, I strongly believe in building a wardrobe that has you covered for anything life offers,” says Ference. This helps us avoid the stress of finding that last-minute look, buyer’s remorse, or not feeling quite like ourselves in it. www.yourlifestyled.ca

Krista's Top Three Luxuries — 1. A beautiful, well made coat. Two of my favourite designers are Moncler and Max Mara; they are coats to have forever. 2. A little sparkle and shine with a piece of jewelry or an evening bag. This feels like luxury because we still aren’t going to many events, but this sparkle feels lovely and hopeful. 3. Diptyque limited edition candle sets. One of them comes with a gorgeous gold tone carousel that sits atop the candle while you burn it.

These

last 2 years have been the busiest they’ve ever seen, exclaims Tate

Jeff rey, General Manager of CycleWorks West. The

pandemic, having fueled a collective new‑found interest in the outdoors, triggered a rush of new snowmobile enthusiasts. “Increased demand to get outside and enjoy time with family and friends falls right into our wheelhouse. From Motorcycles to ATVs and snowmobiles, we cannot keep anything in stock!” The CycleWorks team, all riders, have had their hands full pairing people to the right unit for their lifestyle and level of expertise. All this lived experience by the staff means they are well equipped to give clients first-hand accounts of key points such as durability, handling, quality, and accessories. Not only this, potential purchasers can get first-hand experience for themselves. “We are also the only dealer in Edmonton with a 4-acre test track, try it before you buy it as every day is a demo day.” Tate always recommends prospective buyers do some background research to get an idea of all the differing opinions of each brand, just like you would for any large purchase. When you feel ready, his staff will be able to walk you around the showroom and answer your questions. “The first question we ask is what are you going to use it for? Work? Play? Making sure we get a customer into the right unit is the most important step. Being sure it fits their ability and comfort requirements will make their experience even better on the snow.”

For those whom only the best of the best will do, Tate recommends the New Patriot Matryx Boost 850. This model, launched for 2022, opened up for pre-order in the spring and was sold out in an hour and a half. “Designed from day one to handle the stress and demands of turbocharged power, the 850 Patriot is the ideal foundation for the industry-leading Patriot Boost. The new Matryx Chassis, also released this year, offered the patented architecture of the RMK Matryx, delivering instantaneous lift and lightning-fast response. The tapered low drag tunnel and Polaris-exclusive tracks lift the lightweight chassis on top of the snow, and the low-inertia QD2 drive system creates an industryleading response.” Once you’ve secured the right snowmobile, it’s time to get out into the snow! For beginners, a snowmobile club is the best place to start. The trails are novice-friendly and well-marked. If you’re looking to hit the mountains, Tate says that Valemount, BC is a favourite but with that, he adds a note of caution. “As a beginner, to just go to the mountains with no experience is never a good idea. There are many great avalanche training courses a rider should take. They should also speak to their local dealer about the proper safety equipment needed for a successful ride in the mountains.” Once you’ve taken the right course and found the right terrain, get out there and get involved! “Join a club. From club family rides to poker rallies and fall trail cleanups, these clubs work to keep our riding areas open and trails smooth, however, these are all volunteer-based and need all the help they can get.” www.cycleworksacheson.com - 49 -

From Tech to Tête de Moine Tech expert turned restaurateur brings the delightful do-it-yourself experience of fondue to a neighbourhood near you If one could pick any European dining tradition that could be easily listed off the top of one’s head, it would be the delightful experience of fondue. For the familiar but uninitiated, this involves dipping bread, meat, seafood, or veggies into a pot of cheese kept warm and melting by the heat of a candle or an oil lamp. The same experience can also be had with the delicious combination of fruit and berries. Arsh Saini and his partner felt that, in Edmonton, there were not enough options available for people to partake in fondue.

Using

his background as a software engineer, Arsh finds himself uniquely positioned to understand

his customer's needs by numbers, and is able to connect with the best possible technology to enhance a diner’s experience. He describes it as “a lasting experience to spend those special moments surrounded by a warm and cozy environment”. “Bring your special one for a date night filled with an aromatic four-course meal cooked at your table by our servers, with lots of fine wine to choose from, and soft music that allows you to pour your heart out.” While their menu offers up a wide variety of options, not all of them are fondue. For those who would prefer a more traditional steak dinner, the aforementioned four-course meal is the most popular experience Bleu Flames has to offer. With bread, veggies, meat, cheese, fruit, and of course, chocolate, it checks off every fondue aspect one could ask for in a meal. All this is accompanied by soup or salad. “You start with freshly baked bread, veggies and fruit to dip in melting cheese that’s cooked in white wine, beer, or apple juice for kids. The main course offers tons of chef marinated meats and seafood like beef tenderloin, pork tenderloin, salmon, lobster, scallops and more to choose from! Finally, the mouthwatering chocolate fondue is made from high-quality Lindt chocolate accompanied by brownie bites, bacon, strawberries, and oreo covered marshmallows.”

For those whose mouths are now watering, but are not sure where they would start once presented with such a glut of options, Arsh has some delectable seasonal suggestions. If you’re thinking of delving into the world of fondue to celebrate your summer wedding anniversary, give the Welsh Rarebit cheese fondue, cream of wild mushroom soup, Canadian coast to coast meat fondue, or flaming bleu chocolate fondue a try. If you’ve got a first date to impress this winter, you’re sure to do so when you order the grill option for your main course. This allows you and your date the fun of grilling your own choice of meats right at your table! www.bleuflames.com

Fervent Effervescence Standout Holiday Sparkling Wines As the holidays are upon us, the twinkle of bubbles in a glass become the mainstay of our wine affections. In this edition, we will branch out beyond the reaches of Prosecco and Champagne to find characterful, wonderfully charming examples to bring your holiday experience to the next echelon. All of our examples are made in the traditional method — that is, in the same way that Champagne is made - to express the true potential of the grapes of the respective regions. We compare and contrast their qualities with the legendary French benchmark, as our compass, but each has its own direction it is travelling.

2019 LIGHTNING ROCK CANYONVIEW VINEYARD BLANC DE NOIRS BRUT NATURE Summerland, Okanagan Valley, BC Having had the pleasure to visit Lightning Rock several times over the past couple of years to survey the vineyard and taste with winegrower Tyler and owner Ron, it is obvious the winery is a passion project more so than simply a business venture, as so many Okanagan wineries unfortunately now are. The name of the game here is sustainability and minimal intervention — letting the terroir whisper its secrets in the bottle. The Canyonview vineyard fruit specifically that I have had the luxury of tasting, in still and sparkling form many times over the last decade, is truly a special place. The Pinot Noir grown here and used for this wine is some of the most expressive in the Okanagan, if not beyond. With this terroir to work with, and winemaker Jordan’s passion for sparkling, it is no wonder their sparkling wines are exceptional. The 2019 Blanc de Noirs is 100% whole cluster Pinot Noir, unfined and unfiltered, with minimal sulphur added. This produces piercing vibrancy and focus, showing crisp red apple skin, rhubarb, grapefruit, and a dash of bergamot. This is a sparkling wine that will suit the classic flute admirably!

NV ENRICO GATTI FRANCIACORTA BRUT Franciacorta, Lombardy, Italy Franciacorta is a region tucked in between Milan and Verona in the northern reaches of Italy and is rarely mentioned in most wine atlases to any great depth. True, Prosecco is king when it comes to sparkling in the country — and the shadow it casts is far reaching. However, the Franciacorta region produces a serious traditional-method wine from mostly the same Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Notably warmer and with glacial sand and silt for soil as opposed to the chalky limestone of Champagne, the fruit shows a much riper profile in this seductive example made with 100% Chardonnay. Aged on its lees for 24 months lends a heavy brioche character to this wine, yet the ample acidity keeps this on a narrow track to balance. Admittedly at odds with party goers who prefer flutes, I challenge you to let this warm in a regular table wine glass to near room temperature and enjoy it with little effervescence left. It will reward you with a broad, complex delight. Recently at a dinner party this method was tested — not without an ample amount of nerves, mind you — and the results were a revelation to those in attendance.

NV BRÜNDLMAYER BRUT ROSÉ Kamptal, Austria Willi Bründlmayer is well known to be one of the best producers in Austria, also contributing to the esteemed Schloss Gobelsburg in the same region of Kamptal. Despite his notoriety, this is not an obvious region for producing quality sparkling wines. But if one looks closer, Kamptal has noticeable parallels with Champagne — a chalky soil base and a climate suited to producing mineral driven and high acid grapes. Sekt (as sparkling is called around these parts) has long had a general reputation of, ahem, lacklustre quality shall we say. Base wines were produced all over Europe then “fizzified” in Germany or Austria. However this has seemed to energize current winemakers in the country to prove this to be an artifact of the past. This bottle here particularly is of dizzying quality. A blend of Pinot Noir, St. Laurent, and Zweigelt, this is an extraordinary experience that leaves you asking more questions of your palate than it can answer. Vibrant field berry pastry and hazelnut are joined by ruby red grapefruit and smoke — a lively dance between the fine and the broad components. Whether served in a flute or table glass, this should be a smash with your holiday party goers.

The

lively, historical seaside pedestrian walkway is in the heart of Puerto

Vallarta. Lined with local and international restaurants, art galleries, shops, bars and clubs, there is vibrant activity on the Malecon day and night right beside the spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean and Banderas Bay. Most notable are the seaside sculptures. With more than a dozen to capture your eye, perhaps the most popular is the “Vallarta

Malecon

Dancers” donated to the city by artist Jim Demetro in 2006, inspired by a performance of

the “Mexican Hat Dance” by the Xiutla Dance Troupe.

Romantic

Zone

The

Romantic Zone is next to the Malecon. This fun, vibrant

cosmopolitan neighbourhood is best

known as the LGBTQ area, celebrated for the Mexican art and culture on display in its cobbled streets, along with even more trendy restaurants, markets, spas, cafes and a vibrant nightlife.

Huichol Art The

Huichols are the Indigenous people of the mountainous areas of north

central Mexico. Huichol art represents their traditional and innovative folk art and hand-crafts from beading. It is most recognized by colourful decorations using symbols and designs which date back centuries.

Tequila

Tasting

While

you can book guided tours, it is more fun to walk the streets in Old Town and

enjoy the numerous samplings of tequila shops. If you are adventurous enough, you can even try Mezcal with a scorpion, worm, or both!

Food From

Mexico’s culinary traditions to international gastronomical delights, Puerto Vallarta

provides a culinary experience like no other. Enjoy multiaward winning restaurants, beachside restaurants, fine dining, street tacos, local seafood joints, food trucks, and so much more. Authentic Mexican cuisine is al pastor — pork meat that’s been marinated in spices, pineapple and salsa for hours before being slowly roasted on a spit. The meat is carved and served as a taco. Many of these taco stands are found in the Romantic Zone, and you will see lineups where cooks slowly carve al pastor meat off the skewer all night long. For fish lovers, give the Pescado Zarandeado, Aguachile and fresh Ceviche a try.

Holiday Hues! Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme! Try to find a shade of green that isn’t coveted by stylists and interior designers everywhere. With the holiday season upon us, mixing in the raw elegance of gold, the neutrality of creams and a hint of nature’s terracotta adds an unexpected and pleasurable touch of warmth. There are dramatic and bold choices in textured sofas and accent chairs, or glimmering metallics in end tables and lighting fixtures that make a statement. Small touches such as hand painted pillows, serving trays and candles add oomph and ambiance. It’s just enough splendour for those tentative of a large commitment. We’re rethinking the traditional holiday hues but we can all agree that a warm cider can be enjoyed with any colour combination. This is simply a modernistic palette that could very well become the perfect backdrop for your winter soirees!

Finding

a home on the outer ring of St. George's Crescent in the

Old Glenora neighborhood is rare. With spectacular views of Edmonton's river valley and a short commute to downtown, it's really no wonder why. 52 St. George's Crescent is its own wonder both inside and out. Built in 1929, its architectural design is a well-aged timepiece with modernized upgrades throughout, boasting over 3700 square feet of living space above grade. The unique arched brick front entrance will welcome you into a large open foyer with black and white checkered flooring straight out of Wonderland. The entrance boasts high ceilings and a ton of natural light beaming in from large south-facing windows. The foyer sits centrally in the house leading in multiple directions. To the left, you will find a grand living room that features a wood-burning fireplace, a white ceramic tile floor and floor-to-ceiling windows that offer a spectacular view of the river valley. The bright open-concept kitchen is a chef's kiss; showcasing an assortment of windows, skylights, tons of cabinet space, stone countertops, a large island and high-end stainless steel appliances. Glass french doors lead to a unique brick deck in the back yard, the perfect place for a barbecue. The kitchen flows into a generous dining room with another large window and plenty of room to host family dinners. On the other side of the kitchen, you'll take a step down into a cozy family room with a two-way gas fireplace. More floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the charming backyard and the skylights bleed in from the kitchen, giving the room a bright and inviting appeal.

Before heading up the stairs to the second floor, you will also find the main-floor bathroom with a shower and a den. The second level features four bedrooms and two more washrooms. The luxurious master bedroom features a spacious walk-in closet with enough built-in cabinets and shelves to make Marie Kondo proud. A spa-like ensuite bathroom has double sinks, a stand-up shower and a soaker tub with ravine views. The second bathroom also features double sinks and a stand-up shower with a built-in bench. Perhaps the most unique feature of 52 St. George's Crescent is a red-carpeted spiral staircase leading up to a secret loft. Also bearing the red carpet treatment, the loft includes sloped ceilings, built-in shelving and another gas fireplace which sets the perfect scene for a cozy reading nook. Outside, both the back yard and front yard offer landscaping with gardening opportunities. The private back yard is fully fenced with several different trees scattered throughout offering extra privacy. A double detached garage in the back completes this extraordinary place to call home. www.clarepacker.com
