Editor's Note for all of us. It seems like the whole city of Edmonton is following this incredible friendship, cheering for Ben and for the Oilers together. This is one of the most inspiring things we’ve seen; another statement of kindness and the big heart of people around us. Gord Steinke, one of the most familiar faces amongst TV news anchors, announced his retirement in April, and we are thrilled that we had an opportunity to talk to him about his career highlights, what’s on the bucket list and what his new adventures look like. After a long wait and a canceled concert due to the pandemic, Jesse Cook is finally coming back to Edmonton. In anticipation of his upcoming concert, our managing editor Beryl Bacchus had a great opportunity to talk to him and learn more about this guitar virtuoso.

years of reviewing and dissecting local and world events, while delivering them to audiences who really, truly love him; that’s

a legacy. Helping shape public opinions, Steinke and his co-hosts continue to attract large audiences despite this highly digital era where news stories are available 24-hours a day from so many sources. After announcing his retirement from TV recently, I was grateful to have some of his time, and I am delighted with Steinke’s ability to focus on our conversation as if it was the highest priority on his to-do list; he is a genuine storyteller.

AN

athlete through and through, the new 2022 Genesis G70 Sport comes dressed in a tailored suit, matching its performance chops with style.

Bold styling focuses on the Crest Grille in the front, set low and flanked by wing-like Quad Lamps. The side profile is sculpted with muscular leonine tension, looking ready to launch at a moment’s notice. And the rear end integrates LED Quad tail lamps, expressive badging and oval exhaust tips. The grille, bumper and fender trim and door handles are finished in Dark Chrome, adding to the mystique. And the aesthetics are completed with stunning dark 19-inch rims.

The G70 is motivated by a twin-turbocharged 3.3L V6, putting out 365 HP and a pavement-wrinkling 376 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a quick-shifting 8-speed

automatic

and

Genesis’

outstanding

H-TRAC all-wheel drive system. Putting the hammer down catapults the car off the line, but the G70 isn’t just about raw straightline power - it offers a delicious balance between supreme power and genuine athleticism and competency on the road. The precise steering is a delight and its adaptive suspension juggles comfort and sport, easily handling potholes and curves alike. Traction on any surface is predictable and secure and powering out of high-speed corners is a dream, courtesy of the mechanical limited-slip differential. If you want even more engagement, you can use the shift paddles to change gears manually. The G70 lets you choose between a variety of driving modes - Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport + Smart and Custom - and the car’s steering, throttle response and even the variable exhaust system all react to your driving inputs differently based on your choice. When it comes to bringing things back down to earth, the world-famous Brembo brakes provide ultimate stopping power while looking fantastic with their red calipers. World-class materials, best-of-class fit and finish, and modern styling all come together to present the driver and passengers with an interior for the ages.

- 39 -

The heated and ventilated Nappa leather seats are as comfortable as they are supportive and the heated steering wheel is a delight in the hands of any driver. Rear passengers are treated to all the same beautiful trimmings, including heated seats. The trunk lid is powered for quick access. The G70’s array of cutting-edge technologies provide access to everything a driver needs for convenience, safety and comfort. The brilliant heads-up display gives all the information a driver needs without having to look down. Front and centre is a wide touchscreen that allows you to split its content into different parts of the screen. An astounding 15-speaker Lexicon audio system - with subwoofers under both front seats - will satisfy even the most discerning audiophile. Behind the scenes, the full suite of state-of-theart driver assistance technology, including navigation-based smart and adaptive cruise control, works together to get you and your passengers to your destination confidently and safely. Even when you’ve arrived, the Safe Exit Warning system protects you from opening the doors when it’s unsafe. When it comes to balancing power and dynamic drivability with luxury, presence, style and comfort, the Genesis G70 does it all with ease. WWW.GENESISSOUTHEDMONTON.CA

LIKE

shoots breaking free from frozen ground, Edmontonians emerge

from their confines to embrace warmer days of Spring. Such is the essence of May, a restaurant whose name represents renewal and the promise of things that grow. For it to be this month’s feature restaurant is fitting. Fitting too, is to have Doreen Prei, a Michelin-star trained chef helming the kitchen. Having worked in Edmonton restaurants since 2008, German-born Prei is in her element at May, taking inspiration from both the setting and the farm-fresh ingredients. Her dishes are expertly executed and visually compelling, and while her skill is evident, she is quick to give credit where credit is due. “The ingredients speak for themselves. The reason why the food is good is because of the people who raise the products,” she says of what she either picks up from the farmers' market two blocks away or has delivered by producers. Food harvested at the height of the season means the items are at their nutritional peak and as a result, exhibit their best flavour. Prei says that in regard to her work at May, locally raised ingredients are less expensive than food that comes from farther away. Having to buy from a corporate distributor means ingredients are packaged in larger quantities which results in more food waste. Along with more packaging and a larger carbon footprint in getting those ingredients to her door, makes Prei an ardent champion of small-scale, local producers.

www.modernluxuria.com

- 46 -

“Considering the hard times that have happened to so many, it’s even more important now,” she says of keeping the dollars in the local economy, adding that doing so also makes a community vibrant. Vibrancy is alive and well in Prei’s creations: perfectly seared scallops nestled in a bright butternut squash puree among blistered tomatoes and grilled green onions; wafer-thin potato chips and scattered microgreens crown a bed of roasted mushrooms whose earthiness is balanced by a black garlic emulsion with mole-like characteristics. A delicate crunch of nuts against the silky centre of an egg; crisp purple beet chips against tangerine-hued carrot butter; salted honey with tangy haskap berries against saffron ice cream: Prei’s food addresses all the senses. Dinner at May is as suitable for an intimate date as it is for a business lunch or a long table celebration. At night, the glow of the restaurant spills to the street beyond but during the day and on weekends, lunch and brunch patrons are bathed in sunlight that streams through floor to ceiling windows on all but one side of the space. On weekends, enjoy the simplicity of a bacon sandwich or dive into a roasted eggplant and chickpea tagine. Treat yourself to an intriguing cocktail or a glass of bubbles before continuing your day strolling through the exhibits at the AGA. A day of food and art? Now, that’s a beautiful pairing. Capturing Spring in a Glass: Shake Up Something Delicious! Fresh, fruity, and fantastic. Get ready to wow your friends with these fabulous patio worthy cocktails

May 2022

With Spring upon us (we hope), it’s time to start thinking about setting up the patio, having friends over and mixing up some new cocktails. Think fresh, fruity, and fun! With cocktails being on trend, the smells and colours of Spring had me thinking fresh fruit & florals! Looking to mix up your glass of Chardonnay? There are some fabulous Chardonnays out there from iconic producers that are meant to be enjoyed solo, or with a great meal. But if you’re tired of the same old Chardonnay, try adding soda and fruit for a simple, yet exotic cocktail.

Razzberry Chardonnay Ingredients: Unoaked Chardonnay (I used Joel Gott – USA) Raspberry syrup Sparkling water or club soda Fresh raspberries Pour 3 oz of Chardonnay into a flute glass with ice. Stir in 1/2 oz raspberry syrup, and top with sparkling water. Garnish with 2-3 fresh raspberries and serve.

I’m a big fan of the Gimlet, a cocktail that is one of the classics; simple, elegant, and timeless! Back in the 19th century, the lack of Vitamin C caused scurvy. The British Navy brought gallons of lime juice on board its ships to give to the sailors to keep them strong and healthy. The story goes that the doctor on board, Sir Thomas Desmond Gimlette, administered gin with the lime to mask its bitter taste and make it easier to drink. Some say the drink was named after him. Of course, it could have been named after the hand tool that bore into the barrels of spirits found on the ship called a gimlet. It doesn’t matter which story you prefer; the cocktail is always delicious and easy to make. Try adding cucumber and basil for a twist on the classic!

Cucumber Basil Gimlet Ingredients: Gin (I used Tanqueray) Rose’s Lime Cordial Basil leaves Lime Cucumber sparkling water Combine 2 oz gin, 1 oz cordial, juice of half a lime, and 3-4 basil leaves in a shaker with ice. Shake well until basil leaves are muddled. Pour into a chilled coupe style glass, top with ¼ oz sparkling cucumber water and garnish with a lime wheel or cucumber slice.

Spring is a time of new birth; trees are budding, and flowers are blooming. The world is full of colour again after the monochromatic white of winter. Buying annuals is a favourite activity of many in Spring to brighten up patios and porches. With that in mind, think about what floral notes would go inside a tasty cocktail! Rose? Lavender? Hibiscus? Elderflower? A true homage to Spring, any of the above flowers would make a tasty drink. You could even make it non-alcoholic and skip the vodka. Fresh and delicious either way!

Lavender Rose Lemonade Ingredients: 2 oz Vodka 1/4 oz lavender syrup 1/4 oz rose syrup 3 oz lemonade (use 4 oz if making non-alcoholic) Blue Butterfly tea bag (the bitter tea offsets the sweetness of the syrup) Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake well until chilled. Pour into a chilled highball glass and garnish with edible dried flowers or a mint leaf. Happy Spring!

“We want to increase our collaborations. We’d love to do our shows with a live orchestra sooner rather than later. We orchestrate all our pieces, so we’re ready to go; it’s just a matter of time to find the right group to collaborate with.” The pop opera genre falls in the realm of the underappreciated and Volare Tenors would like to change that and push the boundaries of the sound. There are key figures like David Foster who helped define the sound and the expected repertoire, but their background and theater influence can help push those expectations. “We’re interested in removing barriers and boundaries that people have the expectation of when it comes to opera music; but also vice versa when it comes to the ideas opera lovers have of pop music. They might not be aware of how ‘pop-y’ some of the music they enjoy really is.” The Dreams of Volare Tenors: Dream Venue: Madison Square Garden Dream Collaboration: Celine Dion or David Foster WWW.VOLARETENORS.COM

Lindsay Elms Lori Elms Design Group Traditional Kitchen Design

From a young age, Lindsay Elms could be found rearranging furniture and reorganizing her home. Interior design is in her blood, literally, with her Mom, Lori Elms of Lori Elms Design Group, being her mentor. Lori Elms Design Group is a full-service interior design firm that was founded over 30 years ago. Lindsay loves design as a creative outlet and is passionate about helping clients discover their personal style. Lindsay’s personal style can be described as eclectic, balancing both modern and timeless elements. For Lindsay’s traditional kitchen design, she used pieces that are timeless but trendy. “As we all know the kitchen is the heart of the home, so I wanted this design to be inviting and warm. The rich textures and warm neutral tones, combined with the classic brass elements in the lighting and hardware lend themselves to a classic beauty that can hold up style-wise for years to come.” WWW.LORIELMS.COM

Pria Rajput Black Label Designs Modern Kitchen Design Pria Rajput, founder of Black Label Designs, grew up with a passion for art, fashion and beauty. It was this passion that led her to pursue an education in architectural design. Pria loves using spaces to bring her clients’ stories to life. Each of her projects are unique and include a customized wall installation or bespoke art piece that she has specially designed herself. Pria’s design style is a perfect balance between luxury and contemporary aesthetics. “I love incorporating the elegance of marble, but I may juxtapose it with concrete or metal. I tie this all together using a mix of raw earthy elements, neutral colors, and hints of black and gold.” For Pria’s modern kitchen design, she wanted to showcase an eclectic aesthetic that fits perfectly within the local culture and weather. A moody ambiance has been set with dark-coloured cabinetry. To keep a sleek and modern appearance, she has used push latches to reduce visual clutter. Hanging greenery is a perfect addition to add a sense of calmness. The Bearbrick is Pria’s all-time favorite decor piece which brings character to any space. She added in the BLD Melted Disco Ball collection as a fashion statement. Gold accents are used throughout as an effortless way to add luxury. WWW.BLACKLABELDESIGNS.NET

Etienne Grossi Shantam Interiors Bohemian Kitchen Design Born in Brazil with an Italian heritage, Etienne Grossi grew up amid architects and designers. His family was in the hotel business and his father was a builder. Etienne found his love for design while helping his family with home and hotel renovations. He later traveled the world and got to experience art and design from all over the globe. Etienne is the founder at Shantam Interiors, a full design service firm specializing in private residences, restaurants and commercial establishments. He doesn’t like to define himself with a specific style. Etienne prefers, instead, to deliver a coherent design in any style that his clients wish to have. For Etienne’s bohemian kitchen design, he used bright nature-inspired colors with different contrasting patterns and vintage touches. “The bohemian style is associated with artistic types of people…the freethinkers. Many design details can work with the bohemian look - displaying pots and pans, plants, books or anything you love. Almost anything goes; patterns, colors, and textures are delightfully welcomed.” WWW.SHANTAMINTERIORS.COM

loss of a person and a loss of a great, great talent. So my dream collaboration will never happen. Other than Lhasa, I’ve always been a Peter Gabriel fan. He was a huge influence on me growing up. I love Tommy Emmanuel; I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with him a few times in the past. Vicente Amigo is a great Spanish guitarist who I think is amazing. Tell us about your love for video and filmmaking. If you look at the last 10 years, you will find that I’ve produced infinitely more videos plus a TV special than I have music. I’ve always thought that film, movies in particular, are the ultimate medium because it incorporates music, literature, spoken word and the visual - it’s like a moving painting. For me the whole thing is sort of the greatest of all these art forms coming together. I’m really passionate about it. Is there a favourite song you have released? There is one song that has risen above all others. It’s called Mario Takes a Walk from my second record in ’96. It ended up at the Olympic Games. At one point the Japanese and Russian skaters were both skating to parts of Mario Takes a Walk. If I remember correctly, the Japanese skater won bronze but I felt like I won bronze. It also got rewritten into a huge Bollywood hit movie, Dhoom.

There is this super successful Bollywood composer, and his whole career has been basically stealing other people’s music. And probably the biggest hit he ever had was this song called Dhoom Machale which is basically Mario Takes a Walk. In some ways I’m really proud. That’s like my song but on the other hand I wish he’d called me and asked, “Hey, would you be ok with this?” It would have been nice. Playing that song live has sort of evolved over the years and now I find when we are in concert, I feel there is this energy that hits the audience. Sometimes the magic comes for certain songs and for me, that song was Mario Takes a Walk.
