Let’s take a moment to talk about 2023.

Being able to welcome this new year in much better condition than the few years before it, has us excited about the prospects and opportunities 2023 may bring. From the perspective of Modern Luxuria, we are looking ahead and planning some really exciting content for our readers, as well as offering a great digital platform to advertise and promote local, national, and international brands and businesses.

Editor's Note

expansions to exciting new events, bold fashion, and lots of big and small luxuries, our city continues to be a vibrant, exciting, and great place to live in.

Speaking with Grant Fedoruk, the founder of Leading Edge Physiotherapy, we are inspired and excited to hear the story of not only an exceptionally successful business, but a great philosophy on work-life balance, and a commitment to community that he lives by.

For those of you who are planning a wedding this year, we bring you some great ideas, from gift registry to venues, ideas for rehearsal dinners, and of course, great fashion.

As we start to get used to writing a new date this time of the year and start making some new resolutions, or follow up on the ones we made before, this is a great time to remind ourselves how fortunate we are to call this community our home. We hope you’ll enjoy the first edition of 2023, and look forward to bringing you many inspiring stories this year.

As we go out to meet the various individuals we’re writing about, we get an opportunity to hear firsthand about local events, what’s happening in the market and what there is to look forward to. From many conversations we’ve had recently, it sounds like there is so much to get excited about. From business

Community, Well-being and Family

Grant Fedoruk’s effective work-life blend philosophy

- 8www.modernluxuria.com
- 9January 2023

Grant Fedoruk, born and raised in the Edmonton region, is all about health, wellness, family and community. Physical therapy is not only his vocation; he also met the love of his life, Heidi, in the first year of university and they graduated together, eventually building Leading Edge Physiotherapy. Partners in business and life, they’ve built an incredibly effective work-life balance that allows them to thrive as parents and professionals. Today, they own eight clinics in the Edmonton region, and the first one is scheduled to open in Calgary soon.

If it’s just for the sake of business, we won’t keep growing.

What are some of the new trends in physiotherapy?

What does your day look like, managing eight clinics?

We have a beautiful relationship with our physiotherapists and partners - that are clinic owners. Our partners form the foundation of each location, and together we get to look after our communities. Heidi and I are still in the business and get to see patients at the same time as we both love it. I got into this to help people and make a difference in individuals’ lives, and I get the most enjoyment from every day that I’m in the clinic seeing patients. I refuse to give that up, no matter how big we get. Even with eight clinics, I was there this morning with patients. I truly love going to be hands-on with my patients; I get great fulfillment from that. At same time, I enjoy the challenge which is this business, and growing it in a way that’s meaningful and it’s continuing to deliver on a promise that we made to our patients. We won’t keep growing unless we can do it in a meaningful way, meaning that we want to continue making a difference for our communities and for our patients.

Some are old ideas that become new again; we studied them 20 years ago but someone makes them trendy again. You see a swimmer with cupping marks, and even though cupping has been around for thousands of years, it becomes new. What we try to do as a business is to give our patients the same level of care that a professional athlete gets. We spend a lot of time researching evidence-based ways to give care to patients, so we have technology such as aquatic therapy - in-house physical therapy pools designed for rehabilitation. Other technology we’ve integrated into the clinic is zero gravity treadmills; they use positive air pressure in order to alleviate the weight off the person so they’re not in as much discomfort and can start walking or even running sooner.

Another one is radial shockwave that is quite popular these days, but we’ve been doing it since we started the clinic 15 years ago. It’s a very effective treatment technique for people who have chronic tendonitis. We’ve got technology that helps people with inner ear disbalance called vertigo, and this treatment was not easily accessible before. Treating men and women with pelvic issues such as incontinence is another new technology we offer. This was pushed under the table as an embarrassing topic, but it’s an important area of care.

- 10www.modernluxuria.com
- 11January 2023

Is there one area of your work that you enjoy the most?

Treating patients, hands-on, seeing patients that I’ve had an opportunity to treat for 22 years and getting to know them. I’ve seen patients, their kids, their kids’ kids and it makes going to work not feel like going to work at all.

What are some of the achievements you’d like to mention?

From the perspective of a physiotherapist, what is the best way to manage stress and stay well?

Movement is key. There are all kinds of medications and treatments, but from a very young age all the way to retirement, it’s important to continuously keep moving or find a way to adapt in a way that allows you to keep moving. Our body is this amazing technology that if we feed it properly and give it the right TLC - one of which is movement - our body will continue to function well. That’s why we use all these technologies I mentioned earlier to help people move. We have to find ways to stay active, even in our climate which sometimes makes it a bit more challenging, but there’s always a way to do it.

Our commitment to the community is one of the things we are very proud of. We’ve been able to raise over 1.5 million for various charities in the community who make a real difference in the lives of people we care about. Organizations such as the Zebra Child Protection Centre, Pilgrims Hospice, and the St. Albert Seniors Centre are the ones we’re really passionate about. Our team gets together and helps make a difference in our community. While others call it volunteer work, we call It responsibility. It’s what we do, and at the same time, we have fun doing it. Our Run Wild Race, for instance, raises between 70,000 and 100,000 dollars every year for charities in our community. We have a Comedy Night that we put on every year in conjunction with the Edmonton Comedy Festival and Andrew Grosse, and we sell out two shows. We put together an atmosphere where our colleagues and our partners can get together, spend time with one another, and raise money to make a difference.

- 13January 2023

How do you balance work and your busy life?

I have two kids, eight clinics, and love the question about work-life balance. There is an overlap of everything; there is not one or the other. Our kids are a part of our business and grew up in the business. They come to the clinic and our events, and sometimes I watch them play a game from my phone in the clinic while I’m working with patients. We’re able to do this and it’s a team effort. Heidi is the glue that keeps it all together and makes sure everything is working smoothly. Ultimately, we are a team and that’s what makes us successful.

Favourite things to do in Edmonton?

Golf. I’m able to work and golf at the same time. We do enjoy the river valley a lot, we love bookstores and public libraries. Concerts and festivals are also some of the things we like to do as well. Oilers and Elks are on our list of events too, as well as a cottage in Rocky Mountain House and we spend a lot of weekends there. We couldn’t live in a better region to do the things that we love to do!

community approach to care across the province, and hopefully outside of the province too. It’ll start with Calgary first and we’ll see where it goes.

What does a date night with Heidi look like?

I’m into romantic comedies; there isn’t one out there that I haven’t seen. I don’t know how many times I have seen Serendipity - it’s one of my favourites. It’s an opportunity to shut out the world and watch a romcom together, because it’s not a date night when we’re at events and dinners even though we’re together.

What are your top three luxuries?

I enjoy clothing and have quite a wardrobe. I really enjoy suits! Timepieces are one of the pieces I reflect some milestones with, and it’s quite a luxury.

The most important one is time with my family. We are so fortunate to be able to find the time to spend with each other, to split my time and be with my family and still be able to accomplish things related to my work.

What’s on the horizon for Leading Edge Physiotherapy?

As long as we can keep delivering a high level of care, our plan is to keep expanding. We’re hoping to bring a little bit of Edmonton and our tight knit

The Night Before: Hosting the Rehearsal Dinner

- 36 -

Intimate or extravagant: the choice is yours

The rehearsal dinner is a time to enjoy the company of your bridal party and family. By this point, you’ve planned and executed a monumental number of tasks. It’s now time to sit back, relax, and leave the cooking, serving, and cleaning to the pros. Here are three restaurants that offer a variety of menus and room sizes to accommodate parties both big and small.

- 37 -

Rge Rd

From the capable hands of Chef Blair Lebsack and crew, three options under one roof are available for private gatherings. The Farmhouse is a semi-private space in Rge Rd that is separated from the main dining room by a sliding barn door. Because of its proximity to the open kitchen and its gorgeous wood-burning oven, guests have a view of the team at work while remaining apart from patrons in the main dining room of this highly lauded, awardwinning restaurant. The Farmhouse can seat up to 18 people.

The Butchery by Rge Rd

Next door, in The Butchery by Rge Rd, two other private dining options exist: the communal table in the retail area can seat 14 for dinner. The space may also be booked for a standing reception to accommodate up to 100 guests. Behind the retail area is a completely private space called The Larder which can seat up to 48 people. The room features state-of-the-art audio/visual equipment which means the slide show you’ve put together of the bride and groom from their toddler years to present day can be viewed on a 110-inch drop down screen. Food is executed by the Rge Rd culinary team and is, of course, at the forefront of the experience.

Braven

Situated in the luxurious JW Marriott, Braven provides a fine dining experience with prime cuts of Alberta’s best beef in the spotlight. The restaurant features private and semi-private rooms to accommodate small and medium-sized groups, from an intimate gathering of 20 for dinner to a cocktail reception that can serve 48. The wood-paneled rooms painted in dark jewel tones are accented with gold and bronze fixtures creating a cozy, inviting and elegant venue, perfect for photo opportunities. Expect to see some of Braven’s classic dishes like shrimp cocktail, black cod, and beef tenderloin on an impressive selection of menus along with several vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse

A dedicated events coordinator is assigned to assist you and your party, be it an intimate gathering of 12 or a grand event to accommodate 120 people. Richly hued decor in rooms like The Vault, The Library and The Boardroom exude timely elegance. For parties of 15 or more, the restaurant offers a range of price points on set menus with names that pay homage to founder, Ruth Fertel, affectionately known as “The First Lady of Steak.” The “Happy Jack” menu is named for Happy Jack, Louisiana where Ruth was born; “The 1965” menu is named for the year she mortgaged her home and bought the Chris Steak House in New Orleans; and “The Ruth” menu, named for the legend herself, showcases the finest of what the restaurant has to offer.

As expected, the franchise’s legendary steaks feature prominently on the menus but special requests, like vegetarian options can be arranged, as well.

Unforgettable Wedding Cocktails

With the happy couple busy between the wedding ceremony and the reception, time to mingle means sharing a cocktail or two with friends and family.

Wedding signature cocktails designed with the bride and groom in mind, or with the season are sure to wow your guests!

Smaller weddings means special little touches. These days, newlyweds like to have something special for folks to talk about after the fact; a memorable signature cocktail that will remind them of the great time that was had by all. Perhaps something to match the couple's personality or the season of the wedding. Whatever the case, read on for some eye-catching cocktails to celebrate the four seasons. The recipes can be adjusted to make in bulk and/or have a mocktail version for those not wishing to imbibe. Choose your serving vessel, then pour and garnish.

- 44www.modernluxuria.com
- 45January 2023

WINTER

With snow and sub-zero temperatures, guests might appreciate something warm to sip on. With eye-catching colour, this hot mule features a pop of red from the fresh cranberry and zingy warming ginger from the ginger beer. Serve in grandmother’s vintage teacup and matching saucer to make a truly delightful presentation.

Something Borrowed Cranberry Mule

4 oz ginger beer 2 oz cranberry juice 2 oz vodka ½ oz lime juice cranberries lime wedge

Combine ginger beer and cranberry juice in a saucepan to heat. Pour into teacup, add vodka, and lime juice, stirring to combine. Garnish with fresh cranberries and a lime wedge. Serve immediately.

- 46www.modernluxuria.com

The snow has melted, trees have started their budding, and flowers are starting to burst with colour. The season calls for a signature cocktail that is fresh and inviting. Garnished with mint and a slice of pink grapefruit, this delicious take on the gin and tonic would be ideal for any spring garden wedding.

Something New Gin & Tonic

2 oz gin 8 oz tonic water mint leaves pink grapefruit wedge

Combine gin and tonic over ice, add some grapefruit pulp (if desired), a sprig of mint and a pink grapefruit wedge. Serve.

- 47January 2023
SPRING

SUMMER

Ah, the warm weather, green grass and long lazy days are always the most popular times for a wedding, at least here in Alberta! There’s nothing like a cold glass of lemonade to enjoy by the pool and this cocktail is so easy to make, yet is undeniably refreshing. The colour alone will have your guests talking. A perfect cocktail for a summer wedding, no matter the locale.

Something Blue

4 oz lemonade 2 oz vodka ½ oz blue curacao

Pour lemonade and vodka in a highball glass with ice. Add blue curacao and stir. Float a lemon wheel on the top. Use a punchbowl to make in bulk and use equal parts vodka and lemonade. Add ½ cup blue curacao and stir to combine.

- 48www.modernluxuria.com

Nothing is more beautiful than the changing colours of autumn; red, gold, yellow, and orange along with the smell of harvest in the countryside. Perhaps a fall ceremony will take place in a farmyard with a big red barn as the venue, and wheat and corn fields as the backdrop. Treat your guests to a sangria using the bounty of harvest to capture in the glass.

Something Old Sangria

1 bottle Merlot or full bodied wine (adjust for number of guests)

1 c whiskey or bourbon 1 can lime flavoured sparkling water

½ c orange liqueur 1 c cranberry juice

Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes and other seasonal fruit (I used a yellow and red pear)

Cut fruit and add whiskey to mix. Ideally, let sit overnight to concentrate the flavours. Add the wine and sparkling water. Add all other ingredients to blend and stir. Pick your favourite glass to serve in and garnish with a piece of citrus if desired.

A Love Locale

Welcome to Obsidian Ridge, a wedding venue crafted with love, for love

When Jodi and Layson LaFayette were planning their wedding back in 2016, they could have never predicted that it would shape their future career paths. After having a difficult time finding a venue that lined up with what they had envisioned for their dream wedding, they settled on a location and their wedding day went as quickly as it came. Jodi and Layson were on the dance floor, just beginning to feel their oats, and the venue owner approached them to tell them it was time to shut down and clean up. Disenchanted, they vowed that they would design their own venue so they could give brides and grooms the fulfilling wedding day experience that they deserved, and that they did. Just like that, Obsidian Ridge was born.

- 51January 2023
PHOTOGRAPHY SUPPLIED PHOTO BY JAMIE DIMITRY PHOTOGRAPHY

It was fate that Jodi, an award winning designer, and her husband Layson, an accomplished developer, found each other. Not only as life partners, but also as work partners. Designing Obsidian Ridge would be their first project together. Their idea was to create a unique all-in-one “destination” wedding resort close to the city with both camping and luxury overnight amenities. After scouring properties around the city, they found the ultimate location just thirty minutes southeast of Edmonton. The property boasts thirty acres of land with lots of different elevations, rolling hills and natural water features, making it the perfect spot for all facets of a wedding.

When you book your wedding at Obsidian Ridge, after setting up, your special day will begin in the bridal suite and groom’s den. The bridal suite features three makeup stations, antique lounge furniture, a beautiful chandelier, a fridge, and air conditioning/heat for temperature comfort. The bridal suite leads outside to a large lounge area surrounded by rose bushes and lilacs, nestled in the botanical garden. The groom and groomsmen will be getting ready in the groom’s den which was themed after grandpa’s garage. This mancave is loaded with a foosball table, pinball machine, basketball hoop, punching bag and dartboard, with cozy lounge furniture and even a 1941 Dodge truck.

The grounds at Obsidian Ridge offer a multitude of stunning areas for your ceremony. Many brides and grooms choose Obsidian’s unique amphitheater, the first of its kind in the region. The monolithic monument is built from 500 tons of giant boulders from a rocky mountain and is equipped with 100A power, a small sound system and landscape lighting throughout. A seven-stage waterfall, infinity edge pond and moon-gate entrance nearby give plenty of gorgeous backgrounds for wedding photos.

- 52www.modernluxuria.com
PHOTOS BY MIDWEST BOHEMIAN PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTO BY TWENTY FOUR PHOTOGRAPHY

“Everything here has been created with intention. The moon gate symbolizes a doorway, not just a normal door, a doorway that takes you from one world to the next. So for those getting married, that is moving from being single, to being together; from two families, to becoming one. The circle represents unity, the stone symbolizes permanence and stability. Much like the bond of marriage is forever, this stone monument will be here forever.” Layson describes.

You will spend your evening beneath the stars without the light pollution from the city. The reception tent features a transparent canopy with accent lighting that was carefully selected to offer the perfect ambiance, providing a truly enchanting experience. The reception tent is brimming with an extensive amount of interior features, which are all included in the venue fee, providing you with everything you need for your evening to go off without a hitch. If the weather is right, you can bring the party outside to roast some marshmallows and cap off the evening around the 12 foot diameter fire pit.

At the end of the night, newlyweds will be whisked away to the honeymoon suite, which can be found nestled in the hillside just below the groom’s den. The suite is fitted with a queen sized bed, freestanding clawfoot tub, electric fireplace, private bathroom, mini fridge, and coffee maker. Outside you will find a private cedar hot tub, BBQ, and small fire pit for two. The bride and groom can enjoy sunrise views over Owen Lake, or can choose to close the blackout blinds and sleep in. An add-on package also allows guests to camp overnight with RV lots and tenting sites.

No stone has been left unturned at Obsidian Ridge. Jodi and Layson have poured their entire hearts into the venue and are excited to be adding a glamping resort called “Oasis At Obsidian”, with more exciting features to be announced in the near future. WWW.OBSIDIANRIDGE.CA
