Luxury is in each detail — Hubert de Givenchy
’’ Hello, warm coloured, fall wrapped, beautiful city of Edmonton. We’re still beaming with joy from our official magazine launch on September 10th, and reliving those memories of the warmest welcome Edmonton could give us. In these days when events are no longer taken for granted, we learn to appreciate every moment of it. Wolfe Cadillac offered the most perfect venue. Their large parking lot allowed for a physically distanced event, and our guests could enjoy delicious eats and drinks from Century Hospitality Group, Enotri Wine and Rig Hand Distillery. And sunshine! An incredibly warm and beautiful day joined the rest of you who welcomed us in the most beautiful way, and we are so grateful for that. Another event that marked September is Breakout, an art exhibition by Hanny Al Khoury, that continues until mid October. We talked to Hanny in our last edition so it was gratifying to see his art displayed at the Edmonton City Centre and getting to know more about the artist who says, “You have to portray your own experience through your own eyes. People from China or Israel or Palestine or Dubai can look at the art and understand the language you’re speaking with”. We were honoured to get to know Hanny Al Khoury, and we are confident his paintings will be on walls of the world's top museums. If you have a chance, make your way to Edmonton City Centre before the exhibition Breakout is closed. You may get a chance to meet Hanny and hear his fascinating life story, from being homeless in

Moving on to October, we’re bringing you great stories and interviews. Carrie Doll tells us all about starting a podcast and how being a lifestyle entrepreneur fits into her work life balance. If you’ve been to some of the city’s finest black-tie galas, chances are you've heard Terrell Edwards and his Rat Pack band. We’re asking him about his favourite places, music, cars, and the time he opened for Jay Leno. -6-

Lastly, we hope you are staying well and healthy. It’s a challenging time, and if you’re like the team at Modern Luxuria, you are trying to find the balance of supporting local businesses, while being responsible to the community and keeping your physical distance. And we applaud all of you who are doing that daily – choosing local bakeries, cafes, grocery stores, boutiques, yoga studios, and so much more – keep doing that. Help them keep their doors (or virtual doors) open by investing in our community and our people. Buying local is essential for keeping our city strong and vibrant, and we promise to continue bringing you interesting stories about thriving local businesses. — Modern Luxuria Team -7-

Carrie Doll’s First Love: We Get the Details We ask the former television news anchor about her life, her joy and her first love WORDS BY ERIN SLOBODIAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY TATYANA SEMENOVA
She has a face and a presence that most Edmontonians will recognize immediately. She’s a storyteller and a skilled conversationalist. She’s a pianist, a mother, a wife and a sister. Carrie Doll spent two decades in the television industry and you likely know her from her years with CTV Edmonton. She now has a consulting company, a podcast and lots of memories to share with us about her life. Most people will remember you for your impressive

Fabulous Men’s Fall Fashion Comfiness at an elevated level WORDS BY KAREN MEURER PHOTOGRAPHY BY TATYANA SEMENOVA MODEL MUSICIAN EL NIVEN
Men are gearing towards comfy attire and pulling away from the world of tailored clothing. With the combination of the ability to work from home and not having to attend black tie events, the Athleisure and Street world has grown tremendously. Even pre-pandemic, there was a shift happening in the market, seeing men drawn to the easy, put-together look and feel of elevated Athleisure tracksuits and fashion forward Streetwear. Don't mistake comfy with a baggy pair of sweats and a hoodie where you wouldn't step foot out of your house. Guys are still heavily conscious of quality and looking on point with a BOSS Tracksuit or Kuwalla Joggers and Scoop Tee. Carpe Flores Robert Lemay and 30 years of redeeming floral still life WORDS BY JOE GURBA
If you are dismissive of still life painting because you find it too virtuosic, too technique driven, or perhaps too toothless, please consider the thirty year oeuvre of Edmonton based painter Robert Lemay. Lemay’s work has been exhibited in Montréal, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, New York, Milan, and London, and appears in collections around the globe, even adorning our Canadian embassies from Beijing to Canberra. Lemay’s debt to the old masters is unquestionable and readily admitted. At first glance, Lemay’s work is clearly in conversation with northern renaissance Dutch and Flemish still lifes of the 16th-17th century, paintings he ardently admires, but the distinctions in his approach are myriad. With clear reference to our digital age, Lemay’s process begins with photographing his flowers. He then renders that photo to the canvas by painting square by square on a linear grid, mimicking pixelation. Over thirty years, it appears those pixels have gained in fidelity in tandem with the advances in photographic and on-screen resolution. These are all intelligently subtle developments in still life, but the way the subject is framed provides the most crucial departure from classical painting. The cropped, photographic composition catapults the viewer from their art history textbook to the 21st century, especially when magnified to several square feet of canvas. ▶

- 39 -
Campo de´ Fiori, 36 x 36 inches, oil on canvas, 2020
www.modernluxuria.com
Lemay further distinguishes himself in his handling of the brush. He has a much dryer touch than the smooth Flemish masters; his touch redolent of Tintoretto’s chalkiness, and for good reason. Lemay eschews the 150 year old vogue for impasto oil painting, reasoning that the opacity of such a thick application snuffs out the colourful nuances of layering. His almost waterpaint-like technique, when applied to oils, allows a velvetine texture to emerge from the canvas, not unlike the very petals of the flowers he depicts. But the most important distinction in Lemay’s work is not his technique. It is rather the poetic gravity in his timing. Having grown his own flowers, Lemay allows them to turn the corner of full and youthful bloom toward the very first hints of exposure and rot. Only then does he wrest that moment of stillness from the incessant advance and retreat of life and death. - 40 -
Garden Roses, 30 x 30 inches, oil on canvas, 2020
October 2020
In this way, Lemay’s brush becomes the fulcrum that blooms and decay teeters on. Like the poet that pauses for a breath at the volta, his painting suspends that taut moment when the story turns, when the wave of youth has crested, when ascent gives way to descent. Much of this epiphany is created by the way Lemay frames his subject, as if the viewer is leaning in to inhale. The abundant blossoms are not squarely centered in the four walls of the canvas like the flowery vase-bound fireworks of the Flemish masters. Instead, the just-wilting blooms are brought right to the viewer’s nose. The result is an olfactory synesthesia. ▶

In depicting his flowers not in their greeting card youth but after they’ve taken on too much sun and too much rain, Lemay avoids the ranks of cloying petit-bourgeois floral arrangements and instead poses a profound reflection on ageing. He has captured his flowers backstage during the final act break, changing costumes, naked and vulnerable. Their colours are deepening, gathering the nuances of age. You can almost smell the flowers’ aromas beginning to concentrate and sweat from their shadowy core, balancing on the cusp of putrefaction. The beauty and pain of life’s arc toward death is writ large in that small moment and somehow a quiet dignity is painted into this unavoidable aspect of being alive. Lemay’s flower paintings are reminiscent of a great Sauternes or Tokaji, wines that concentrate their sugars through noble rot, creating a saccharine sweetness that only with age will give way to their coveted complexity, hanging completely on the balance of searing acidity. These wines would be too sweet and unfulfilling otherwise. In this same way, Lemay has elevated floral still life painting, exalting the beauty of life in every aspect of its circularity, inviting us to lean in. www.robertlemay.com

Boxer Gives Whyte Ave a Shot in the Arm The beloved Almanac evolves into a larger space and concept with Boxer When Josh Meacham opened Almanac at the brave young age of thirty-one, he risked it all to breathe new life into Old Strathcona’s live music and cocktail scene at a crucial moment. A number of live music venues had closed in 2015 and Almanac met the need. It’s been a long time since arts were a cash cow, but the good will and fresh blood that brought to the newborn restaurant exposed a new generation of show-goers to properly made cocktails and gorgeous food. Before long, Meacham had built a following that gave him the thrust to evolve the Almanac concept and expand into one of the most exciting vacant spaces in the neighborhood. When Meacham looped in Chef Trevor Patrick Moan, Boxer Albertan Kitchen & Bar was born. Boxer combines Meacham’s decade long pursuit behind the bar to hone the classics and forge elegant new cocktails with Chef Moan’s vision for crowd pleasing seasonal fare, fuelled by his past experience at Packrat Louie, Three Boars, and Northern Chicken. They’ve planted that magic into the gorgeous back half of the former Holy Roller space, spruced up with a forest of plants and a world-of-difference-making sound system. The atmosphere walks that fine line between hip relaxation and Whyte Ave’s signature energy. ▶ - 44 -

Boxer’s new space has another ace up their sleeve. In the coming weeks, they’ll be debuting the highest rooftop patio in Strathcona. Live music will commence in the summers (post-covid) and heated geodesic domes styled after Canadien cabanes à sucre will play host to set menu private dinners through the snowy months. Imagine dining above the elm lined streets on one of Edmonton’s clear moonlit winter nights in a toasty cocoon. Don’t wait for the rooftop or the snow because Boxer’s 20 foot ceilings and huge garage doors make the most of our summers as well. On any given day you’ll find Chef Moan in the kitchen long before service cranking out fresh tagliatelle, gnocchi, spaghetti, and german egg noodles, or breaking down the grass fed beef they buy a side at a time. Menu items like bison tartare with roasted garlic & green onion soubise, house fermented pickles, and pear & berry mostarda are a delicious and welcome tribute to Albertan cuisine. Their stroganoff pasta is the perfect antidote to the cold Autumn winds, riffing on the eastern European aspects of Edmonton’s heritage. House made German egg noodles are tossed in a Russian cream sauce made with the aforementioned beef, Meuwly’s andouille sausage, and oyster mushrooms. ▶ - 47 -

One client was inspired by a hotel in Vegas when describing their vision for a home bar. Beautiful cherry wood was used in the construction and a 1 ½ inch thick glass countertop with LED lights that change colour were installed. A backsplash of synchronized TVs allows for great fun for cohort friends to watch their favourite sports and entertainment shows while sipping wine and spirits together. Another client installed a magnificent wine room with storage for over 1000 bottles of wine. (ONE THOUSAND people — if there is any room to quarantine in, this would be it!) The shelves are made from maple wood and the room has a custom cooling unit to keep the wine at a precise temperature. ▶

But the pièce de résistance of the latest Scott Arthur projects is this stunning whiskey room. Think a Sherlock Holmes or Al Capone-esk secret cellar (well maybe not so secret cause you want to show it off!) in your house. Inspired by London’s cigar and cocktail lounge Savoy Hotel — there is storage for around 500 bottles of whiskey! Red oak and maple wood was put through an extensive distressing process to give the room that weathered look. The room has a ventilation system which removes cigar smoke so you can sip and lounge all you like! www.scottarthurmillwork.com

Home Game rooms conjure up images of dark basements, dusty trophies, and framed jerseys, but in reality they have come a long way. Whether you’re into pool, shuffleboard, darts, poker or foosball, “Games can be customized to suit your colour scheme and style”, says Warren Bitzer from Playmore Tables and Games. Pair game tables with matching cabinets to hold pool cues, darts, and board games to keep your space clean and decluttered. If you don’t have space to dedicate an entire room to play, there are pool tables that look like contemporary dining tables: lift off the top and tuck the benches underneath for an instant pool hall. Whatever way you want to play, you can create a space that doesn’t sacrifice style for good times. www.playmoregames.ca

Sunrise Yoga Yes, it’s early, but what else are you doing at 6 a.m.? WORDS BY LINDSAY BROMMELAND PHOTOGRAPHY BY NABEAL MANSOUR
We all have a personal journey to wellness. For Susan Eve, owner of Inner Circle Yoga, it started with a car accident. She was struck by a car while crossing Jasper Avenue that left her physically disabled for 2 years. As she slowly recovered, she was drawn to Yoga as a gentle way to heal, both physically and mentally. Just like our current pandemic pause, the accident gave her a chance to reset and reconsider her busy life. Susan admits that pre-accident, she tried yoga and it didn’t quite click as she was used to a high impact style of exercise. With that in mind, she has combined classic fitness principles with Yoga to create Sunrise Yoga: a mix of Navy Seals training, resistance training, and vinyasa yoga. Sunrise Yoga is designed to make students stronger in mind and body, no matter where they are on their wellness journey. The program is online, which Susan considers a good thing, because “when we leave our houses we have a social mask on, and now physical masks as well”. At home we can leave the masks aside and focus on what really matters. www.innercircleyoga.com

The Virtual Gym How to get fit playing video games As Canadians brace for a surge of Covid-19 cases this fall and winter, it’s likely we’ll have to shelter-in-place again. No more dining out, going out, or working out. May I suggest a workaround? Virtual reality. When the pandemic forced me to lockdown in spring, I was anxious for an escape that didn’t involve sourdough bread. I needed a new environment, a reason to move my body, and a house to myself. That’s when V.R. occurred to me. When I first demoed the technology, in 2014, I found them clunky, dizzying, and gimmicky. A lot has changed since then. V.R. headsets are more physically and visually comfortable. You still look like a dork in one, but they’re portable now—no computer required—so you can take it to a private room. Best of all: they’re much cheaper. Facebook’s mass market V.R. set, Oculus Quest, starts at $460. Evidently, I wasn’t the only one thinking this. Along with sweatpants, flour, and toilet paper, every retailer was out of stock. I put in a pre-order and eventually it arrived. ▶

I was immediately drawn to lifestyle apps that gave me a decent workout and got me out of the house, so to say. These workout games and meditation apps were just what I needed. The fact that there’s a Virtual Reality Institute of Health Exercise researching their health made me feel less ashamed about the puddle of sweat forming around my feet. The website, VrHealth.institute, is full of useful information, including calories burned with each activity. One thing it doesn’t tell you: spend the extra few bucks on a fitted sweatband. If perspiring into a computer isn’t reason enough, it’s just good hygiene. There’s a global pandemic, after all. ▶

ESSENTIAL WORKERS, WE THANK YOU! COVID-19 brought the world economy to its knees and frontline workers to their feet. The team at Modern Luxuria Magazine is amazed at the risks our healthcare and essential workers continued to take as the pandemic progressed. For weeks, while most people stayed safely in their homes, essential workers went out into the city to do the jobs they were trained to do while everyday risking their health. For this we thank you! It’s truly inspiring to see the changes that businesses have undergone in response to the health crisis. While many have been forced to close their doors for good, others have had to reinvent their business models completely to make staff and customer safety a priority. As we all adjust to this “new normal” we at Modern Luxuria Magazine marvel at the incredible strength of those who are paving the way toward the return to a healthy and thriving community.
