ESSENTIAL WORKERS, WE THANK YOU! COVID-19 brought the world economy to its knees and frontline workers to their feet. The team at Modern Luxuria Magazine is amazed at the risks our healthcare and essential workers continued to take as the pandemic progressed. For weeks, while most people stayed safely in their homes, essential workers went out into the city to do the jobs they were trained to do while everyday risking their health. For this we thank you! It’s truly inspiring to see the changes that businesses have undergone in response to the health crisis. While many have been forced to close their doors for good, others have had to reinvent their business models completely to make staff and customer safety a priority. As we all adjust to this “new normal” we at Modern Luxuria Magazine marvel at the incredible strength of those who are paving the way toward the return to a healthy and thriving community.

Let me be surrounded by luxury, I can do without the necessities! - Oscar Wilde
’’ Welcome to the new digital magazine, Modern Luxuria. First, we want to say how grateful we are for this venture. If there’s anything we learned over the last few months, it is how grateful we should all be for luxuries such as a hug from a loved one, coffee with a friend, dinner with a partner, or a bike ride with the family. The world has changed so much during the pandemic, that it now feels like the ‘reset’ button on your phone when things start to slow it down, make it less functional and overheat. Well, we pressed ‘reset’ as well. Our launch event was scheduled for April 2nd, but we couldn’t host gatherings over a few people, and we didn’t think it was the right time. We postponed, and it gave us an opportunity to think about our purpose, our values and our mission. Our mission is to bring you the best this city has to offer, to talk about luxuries, big or small. For some of us, after the isolation, luxury will be breathing fresh air and soaking up the sun in the river valley. Some can’t wait to shop for spring fashions (now likely summer, but we can catch up and do both!). Some may be looking for a new place to call home. Our goal is to share with you the best of the best, from little luxuries like a good coffee or ice cream, to the great ones like a new car, jewelry or a vacation destination. All of it will find a place in Modern Luxuria, as our team is focused on the city, on its businesses and entrepreneurs, on food, tech, travel, fashion and everything else that may be interesting to read about. -8-

Our mission is also to support all of those local businesses that had to work hard, reinvent themselves to meet the needs of the new world, the world of social and physical distancing, and to create a new kind of closeness. We are here for you, and can’t wait to talk about your amazing projects! And now, over to you, find us on Instagram @ModernLuxuria or send us a note at hello@modernluxuria.com. Let’s find luxuries together. -9-

What does luxuria mean to Krista Ference, and what are her top three luxury items?
Krista is a cofounder and cochair of Lois Hole Hospital Women’s Society and Board member of Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation. Luxuria for me is having the time to devote to my family and friends and also causes that are important to me because I know how fortunate I am in that way. Luxury is the ability to choose everything based on quality and to make those little choices that make life lovely - like valeting my car at the airport, hiring a cleaning service for my home and yard care, having fresh flowers in the house, making most purchase decisions based on principal not on cost. Living a healthy, active and informed life is luxury. To me, luxury is about a way of living and not the things we accumulate. Here are my top three luxury items: 1. Being able to grocery shop without checking prices. We are very fortunate to provide our family with quality, healthy and wholesome foods and I won’t ever compromise in that department. 2. Being able to allow our kids to enter every sport, activity, and experience they have interest in. I believe that introduction to as many skills as possible is important to raising worldly and curious children who will become confident individuals. 3. Being able to travel. Travelling is a must and exposing our girls to the world and it’s diverse cultures is key even if it’s just a surf trip! Of course, we are not travelling during these challenging and unprecedented times. I am hopeful that we all will be able to move freely again and with a new awareness. Love and Health to everyone!

What does luxuria mean to Patrick Bartoshyk, and what are his top three luxury items?
Patrick is a Naturopathic Doctor at Optimum Wellness Integrated Clinic. What does Luxuria mean to you? Luxuria, to me, denotes a lifestyle that inspires excellence as exemplified by a healthy body and healthy mind. It encompasses the entire spectrum of physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and environmental influences. What are your top three luxury items? 1. Food quality. Farmer’s markets and restaurants that provide local, fresh, seasonal, ethically-raised and sustainable food choices. 2. Customer service. Local businesses and service providers where every interaction is professional, personable, and customer/client-focused. 3. Social venues. Local settings, events, or activities where people with common interests can interact in a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere.

What does luxuria mean to Chantell Ghosh, and what are her top three luxury items?
Chantell is the Executive Director at Citadel Theatre, and a board member at Edmonton Economic Development Corporation. What does luxuria mean to you? For me, it is definitely about being in a position to make choices choices about where and how you live, what you do with your time, where you work, what experiences you surround yourself with. Most people don’t have that. What are your top three luxury items: 1. Definitely (even more now) – my passport. Having an airline family means hopping on planes where there are open spots and exploring. I am sorely missing that now. 2. The perfect tote bag. Currently I am carrying the AWAY customizable one in Blush that carries all my carry-on necessities and is a great work bag. It looks chic, has tons of room, and isn’t precious. I can carry my yoga stuff, a laptop or a full bottle of wine in it…along with all my other stuff. 3. My Tom Ford Lipstick in the perfect red, Ruby Rush.

City Business Moves to the Country An Edmonton couple expands their shop from a Ritchie area garage to an acreage home as they build a leather and waxed canvas future for their small daughters WORDS BY ERIN SLOBODIAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ISAAC HAINES
Minimalistic, strong and essential. These qualities are at the core of everything that was created inside the small garage of one Edmonton couple’s home for the past few years. A husband and wife duo, Isaac and Kristen Haines have always shared the shop and the tools used to pound out their leather and waxed canvas goods but operate two separate companies: Fieldwork Co. and Luna Goods. - 28 -

Early this spring, the Haines’ decided to follow their dream of country living and moved to an acreage where they now have an in-home studio that takes up half of the house. “It’s definitely nicer than working in a garage,” admits Isaac Haines in a chat with Modern Luxuria Magazine. The Fieldwork Co. website features leather belts, camera straps and journals or waxed canvas duffle bags, aprons and backpacks, among other items. Luna Goods specializes exclusively in hand-stitched vegetable tanned leather products. Luna Goods is slowing down operations during the summer months but continues to take custom orders. Kristen has decided to dedicate more of her time to mothering the couple’s two little girls. She can often be found with a piece to work on in her hands as the girls play nearby. An idyllic image but Haines laughs that “it’s not always the perfect picture. Sometimes the girls come in crying. I mean it's life with kids but for the most part, it’s really nice.” The husband and wife team see their handiwork as stitching into existence - not only their products - but a legacy they plan to leave behind for their children to continue building. www.fieldworkco.com, www.lunagoods.com - 30 -

Following a family legacy, Ashley is forging her own path built on p 19 questions with Ashley Wolfe
Getting to know Ashley Wolfe, a fourth generation business owner—what we were thinking of introducing her as originally— was so inspiring. But that intro doesn’t seem enough anymore; aside from being a President at a large, family owned dealership Wolfe Cadillac, she is a mom, an athlete and a pilot! Breaking stereotypes all over the place, Ashley told us what it’s like to run a large business in Alberta, what her passions are, what drives her (well, we know it’s a Cadillac, but still wanted to know more), and what does luxuria mean to her. What was your dream job when you were a kid? I always wanted to be a professional baseball player when I was young, but I soon realized that there was no way to make a living as a female baseball player. I then thought about some sort of search and rescue job flying helicopters or working in the Coast Guard. Being a secret agent in the FBI was high on my list as well right up through college. Or a professional ski guide. PHOTOGRAPHY BY TATYANA SEMENOVA HAIR BY SABRINA VIANA MAKEUP BY JESSICA LEE

Tell us about growing up in a family of entrepreneurs and community builders? Please expand on this question. I grew up with very strong role models. Both of my parents were business owners and heavily involved in their community. My brother and I were surrounded by overachievers, and educators in our extended family. I was exposed to very strong independent women that paved the way for me to think that there wasn’t anything I couldn’t accomplish. They supported me in competitive athletics and pushed me to never settle for mediocrity, excelling at what I chose to do was the only way to go. I learned from both sides of my family that giving back was a priority as there were many less fortunate. Both sides of my family demanded that I get an education and work hard for a living, there were no shortcuts and no free rides. How did you get to where you are today, and who helped you along the way? I started in the automotive business in 2005 right out of University. My father was a huge supporter of mine as I learned the family business and put faith in my decision-making right away which enabled me to build confidence in my role. I was fortunate to be surrounded by some excellent members of the management team that had loyalty to my father which I earned over time. The existing leaders in the organization trained me in the business. Along the way I made it a priority to always be learning, taking 2-3 leadership and management courses per year to build my communication skills. I also attended the National Automobile Dealer Academy. - 46 -

Who is your mentor? Peter Heppner, he is the Dealer Principle of Preston Chevrolet GMC Buick Cadillac in Langley BC. For years he ran our stores in Edmonton and was a valuable member of our team. I speak to him 2-3 times per week and gain insight on all kinds of things related to the auto industry. My career would not be what it is if it weren’t for him. What have you learned about leadership and entrepreneurship? “It’s all about the people” You cannot get anywhere is this life going at it alone. Surrounding yourself with great people is the key to a successful business. Give appreciation often, take the time to listen to your team and always give them a platform to have an opinion on the business and what the future opportunities are. Be consistent. What woman inspires you and why? My grandmother inspires me, although she has now passed away. She raised 5 children on her own, was an educator, travelled across Europe on her bicycle, canoed the Bowern Lakes, was the first woman on the downhill ski team in Juneau Alaska, had a University degree, and was financially savvy and independent. She worked with her hands and PHOTO SUPPLIED
had a garden. She inspires me daily…when she was alive, she accomplished so much against all odds and did so many things that only men did at that time. She was my hero. What is the biggest challenge for women in leadership? It’s all a big challenge. The obvious answer is that we must work that much harder than men to be recognized and taken seriously in positions of power. - 47 -

What does the day in the life of a Wolfe Automotive Group CEO look like? I am awakened by my 4-year-old who has a habit of climbing in bed with us around 5:15. I exercise and stretch. Make breakfast for both of my boys. I head to work at 7:30 to my head office in Calgary of which I spend 50% of my week. The other 50% I move around to our other locations in Edmonton and Canmore. My days consist of inspecting what I expect from the upper management team, and working through high level opportunities, or concerns. I leave the store around 5 pm and head off to coach one of my sons’ teams, currently it’s Timbits hockey, soon to be T-Ball. If possible, my husband and I try to squeeze one date night in a week. How do you balance personal and professional life? Work in progress. As a working mother

Celebrate! 16 Years of Art in Edmonton Peter Robertson Gallery marks a milestone in June while it tackles social distancing rules and COVID-19 COVID-19 may have put a damper on operations but the virus isn’t stopping Peter Robertson Gallery from interacting with artists and lovers of art. Like most businesses, the 124th street gallery closed for weeks as COVID-19 moved into the Edmonton region but reopened in time for the May Long Weekend. “It was incredible to engage with people again,” smiled Camille Robertson. Camille Robertson is married to the man the gallery is named for, Peter Robertson. The two have been together for more than three decades and are passionate about helping people to understand that art is about how it makes you feel and not necessarily what it might be worth one day. “Art is really an important part of people's lives. It really changes their space. Buyers should really look for art that speaks to them and we love to help people to discover that,” explains Robertson. The month of June is special for the gallery. Celebrate is an exhibition that marks the 16th anniversary of the founding of Peter Robertson Gallery. The show will run from June 20th - July 23rd and will highlight several artists. www.probertsongallery.com

June 2020
The chef and crew over at Workshop Eatery sure have a lot of moxy. They’ve managed to pave the way for many restaurateurs to hang onto more of their revenue during the several weeks of the COVID-19 lockdown. They completely changed the way they operate all of their restaurants in response to the pandemic and now they’re opening a brand new restaurant, even as their customer base remains uncertain. 2020 has been a hard year for many people and businesses but somehow Workshop Eatery owner and chef Paul Shufelt and team continue to lead the way. Shortly after the COVID-19 lockdown began, Shufelt posted a video to social media encouraging consumers to order directly from restaurants for delivery or pick-up. He pointed out that third-party delivery services like Skip The Dishes, Uber Eats, and DoorDash take around 30% of the bill customers pay to the restaurants. With delivery and takeout accounting for 100% of restaurant sales during the lockdown, Shufelt felt a third of sales was unsustainable to pay for delivery services. The video went viral. Shufelt said the owners of other restaurants have told him their sales doubled after the video was posted. “It kind of snowballed,” he said in an interview with Modern Luxuria Magazine. “I guess it did impact not just us but others in the community.” Workshop Eatery is a fine-dining restaurant where guests can order three or four course meals and bottles of wine or snifters of scotch. When lockdown hit, the owners knew that they’d have to rethink the entire concept in order to keep the business afloat so they temporarily rebranded it as Woodshed South, a spin-off of their Woodshed Burgers location on Edmonton’s 124th Street.

The plan is to continue selling burgers out of the south-side location until the dust settles. On Monday June 1st, Workshop Eatery will re-open its doors for dining room and patio service using the Woodshed South menu. Workshop Eatery and Woodshed Burgers are part of the expanding Robert Spencer Hospitality Group. Most recently it opened two restaurants called The Greenhouse in two City of Edmonton golf courses which are currently in operation. The group has another new restaurant in the works but details won’t be released until contracts are signed and that could be as early as the first week of June 2020. Shufelt laughed when asked if people think he’s insane to open a new restaurant during a global pandemic, “The short answer is yes,” he admitted. “But if I can open a new restaurant during COVID, I can pretty much do anything!” www.theworkshopeatery.com
