William and Kate mark first anniversary

BRITAIN’S Prince William and his wife Catherine celebrated their first wedding anniversary on Sunday, April 29 marking the milestone in private after two billion TV viewers watched them wed in 2011. “They spent the weekend privately with friends,” A St James’s Palace spokeswoman told AFP. “They’re not celebrating their anniversary in any public way.” The couple attended the wedding of a school friend of Kate’s in Suffolk, eastern England, on Saturday, when they had to shelter under umbrellas. Kate wore the same navy blue dress that she wore on official duties in Canada last year. British newspapers lined up to praise the pair, who have been credited with reviving public interest in the monarchy. “Kate the Great wins us over,” The Sunday Times said, while The Sunday Telegraph said of the royal family: “It’s only been 12

months and already we wonder: how did they ever manage without her?” The Independent, for its part, on Saturday produced a “cut-outand-weep guide” to the couple’s first 12 months. After honeymooning in the Seychelles, William and Catherine toured Canada and California and made polished public appearances in Britain, with more ahead for Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond jubilee in June and the London Olympics. Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, appears to have taken to the royal life with ease and has become a fashion trendsetter, even appearing on Time magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people. William, second in line to the throne, earlier this year spent six weeks as a search-and-rescue pilot on the Falkland Islands, infuriating Argentina, which claims the archipelago as its own. Singapore, Malaysia, Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands in September to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne. Speculation has been rife as to when the two will produce a royal heir, but they have made it clear they will not be bound by any timetable, and fans have so far had to make do with news of Lupo, the couple’s cocker spaniel puppy. The Very Reverend John Hall, the dean of Westminster who officiated at the wedding, recalled the event fondly. “It was one of the warmest and happiest occasions in the abbey that I can remember, and I think that a lot of the warm reaction related to the interaction between the couple themselves,” he told The Sunday Telegraph. “They had responded in a very wonderful way to the interest in them and seemed focused on the spirit of the service.” As for the verger seen cartwheeling down the aisle afterwards, he said: “It expressed physically what we were all experiencing emotionally. It was just a summing up of the thrill of the day.” The Telegraph also came up with a 24-page mini-guide on “the making of a royal fashion icon,” covering everything from Kate’s brooches to the makeup she uses. The couple’s next scheduled public engagement is on May 7, when they are to present prizes at the Badminton Horse Trials in Gloucestershire, southwest England. ■ (AFP – London, United Kingdom – April 29, 2012)

harassments, including extortion activities. The NPA is the armed unit of the Communist Party of the Philippines, which has been waging one of Asia’s longest running insurgencies that began in 1969. Last week, the guerrillas killed 11 soldiers and a civilian in a daring ambush of three army convoys led by a senior military official. One of those killed in what was described as the NPA’s most audacious attack in recent years was an army captain, but the apparent

target – a battalion commander – survived the ambush. The government last year boasted it had decimated the NPA ranks in many remote areas, putting its strength to about 4,000 fighters nationwide as of 2011 from a peak of 26,000 in the 1980s. Peace talks between the government and the rebels were suspended in November, when Manila rejected demands to free 18 guerrillas the NPA said were consultants to its negotiators. ■ (AFP – Manila, Philippines – April 29, 2012)

Philippine squatter riot

ONE person was killed and at least six were injured on Monday, April 23 as heavily-armed riot police clashed with hundreds of squatters in a suburb of the Philippine capital Manila, police said. The fatality occurred as squatters blocked a road in the residential suburb of Paranaque, hurling large stones at police, armed with shields and truncheons, who were trying to disperse them. Local precinct commander Senior Inspector Ani Endraca said one person was killed and another was in a critical condition after they were shot in the confusion. “If you saw the situation here, you would think you were in Iraq,” he said, adding that five police and government personnel were hit by flying rocks. He said it was only after the rioters were dispersed that police found a dead man on the road who appeared to have been shot in the head. A village watchman was also shot and subsequently rushed to hospital, Endraca said, adding that it was not known who had shot the two men.

Local broadcaster GMA showed footage of a policeman firing an assault rifle towards the rioters as the police were showered with rocks. “We will have to check on that,” said Endraca when told of the incident. Paranaque Mayor Florencio Bernabe said authorities only wanted to remove a makeshift marketplace to make way for lowcost housing but the squatters were told they would be driven out of their homes as well. “They are easy to fool. They are very vulnerable. I understand their fears,” he said in an interview with GMA. Such violent clashes between riot police and squatters are a frequent event in the highlycongested Philippine capital where rural migrants have crowded into slums, worsening urban blight. More than two million people in Metro Manila – or roughly one fifth of the sprawling city’s population – live in shanty towns as so-called informal settlers or squatters. ■ (AFP – Manila, Philippines – April 23, 2012)

TWO communist rebels and a soldier have been killed in separate clashes as insurgents stepped up their attacks in the Philippines, military officials said Sunday, April 29. New People’s Army (NPA) rebels ambushed a group of soldiers in a remote village in Compostela Valley province in the southern island of Mindanao late Saturday, local infantry battalion chief Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Borja said. One soldier was blown apart while seven of his colleagues were wounded in a landmine placed by the rebels in the ambush area, he said. “The use of landmine by the NPA is another violation on the provisions of the international human rights law,” Borja said. Meanwhile, NPA rebels also attacked a column of soldiers on routine patrol in Quezon province just south of the capital Manila early Sunday, triggering a gun battle, army spokesman Major Harold Cabunoc said. Two guerrillas were killed in the “running gun battle that ensued,” he said. In both cases, officials said the soldiers were responding to complaints by civilians of rebel

Britain back in recession PHILIPPINES

Roland Jackson, AFP

BRITAIN’S economy sank back into recession in the first quarter, when it contracted by 0.2 percent amid ongoing state austerity and the eurozone debt crisis, official data showed on Wednesday, April 25. The British economy has now returned to a technical recession, defined as two successive quarters of contraction, after shrinking by 0.3 percent in the previous three months, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed. The data confounded most analysts’ expectations that gross domestic product (GDP) would grow by 0.1 percent in the quarter from January to March, compared with the final quarter of last year. The ONS added in a statement that the decline in first-quarter GDP – the value of all goods and services produced by the economy – was driven by a poor performance by the construction and manufacturing sectors. Britain’s economy had clawed its way out of a record-length recession in the third quarter of 2009 following a downturn sparked by the global financial crisis.

But it has now returned to recession amid painful government spending cutbacks and fallout from the debt crisis in the neighbouring eurozone, which is a key trading partner. Britain joins a number of eurozone countries in recession, including Spain, and bailedout nations Greece, Ireland and Portugal. Overall, the 17-nation eurozone’s output shrank by 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, while recent weak data has sparked deep worries that the region is also back in recession. Highlighting the extent of Britain’s debt strains, official data on Tuesday showed public sector net debt as a percentage of GDP – excluding the cost of bank bailouts – hit a record high 66 percent in March. Britain’s total debt stands at £1.022 trillion (1.25 trillion euros, $1.65 trillion), the ONS had revealed. “It’s a very tough economic situation,” Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said on Wednesday following news that Britain was back in recession. “It’s taking longer than anyone

A recession is defined as two successive quarters of contraction.

Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said recovery was taking “longer than anyone hoped”.

hoped to recover from the biggest debt crisis of our lifetime — even after the recent fall in unemployment. “But over many years this country built up massive debts, which we are having to pay off. It’s

made much harder when so much of the rest of Europe is in recession or heading into it. “The one thing that would make the situation even worse would be to abandon our credible plan and deliberately add more borrowing and even more debt,” added Osborne. The British pound fell against the euro and the dollar on Wednesday, but London’s FTSE 100 index of leading shares held firm in positive territory. The FTSE was 0.49 percent higher at 5,737.31 points in late morning deals. “The double dip in recession

comes as no surprise to us. We have been forecasting another recession since last November when the eurozone crisis intensified,” said Schroders economist Azad Zangana. The recession news dashed market hopes for modest firstquarter growth after retail sales rebounded by a strong 1.8 percent in March from the previous month. Recent figures also showed that the number of jobless Britons fell by 35,000 in the three months to February, marking the first quarterly decline in almost a year. ■ (AFP – London, United Kingdom – April 25, 2012)

ADB hoping to raise donor funds despite global woes THE Asian Development Bank said Friday, April 27 it hoped to raise about $12 billion to fund its key soft loan facility, despite a bleak global economic scenario. ADB president Haruhiko Kuroda said the expected $12 billion figure was for the next four-year cycle of the Asian Development Fund beginning in 2013. The four-year cycle ending this year was worth slightly more than 11 billion dollars, he said. The ADF provides concessional loans to its 67 member countries to fund various projects, from schools and bridges to health clinics and roads, with the aim of improving the lives of the region’s poorest. Kuroda said major negotiations for contributions to the fund were carried out in the past six months, with Japan again emerging as the biggest donor and the ADB waiting for other countries to confirm their pledges.

The final figure will be announced before the ADB holds its annual board of governors meeting in Manila next week. While donors agreed that there was an urgent need to finance development work around the region, the global economic uncertainty had made it difficult for many to dip into their purses, Kuroda said. “There are still so many poor people in those low income countries, and they need assistance in infrastructure, healthcare, education and so on,” Kuroda said. “But of course the major donors, the traditional donors, have difficult economic and fiscal situations.” Central bank chiefs as well as key financial officials from the ADB’s member countries are to converge in Manila from May 2 to 5, 2012. ■ (AFP – Manila, Philippines – April 27, 2012)

China and Russia have jointly participated in four military exercises since 2005, some involving other countries.

China and Russia hold first navy exercises

CHINA and Russia launched their first joint naval exercises Sunday, April 22 with war games in the Yellow Sea that come amid tensions between China and its Asian neighbours over territorial claims. The six days of drills – the first dedicated exercises involving navies of the two countries – are taking place off China’s east coast, the official Xinhua news agency said. Although China has said the military exercises are designed to improve regional stability, they come at a time when Beijing is boosting military spending and more forcefully stating its case in territorial disputes. China’s army newspaper warned Saturday that other military exercises now taking place in Asia between the United States and the Philippines could lead to armed confrontation over the disputed South China Sea. China and several of its neighbours have rival claims to uninhabited islands in the strategic maritime region, which is believed to be rich in oil and natural gas and straddles strategic shipping lanes vital to global trade. Beijing and Tokyo also have a longrunning dispute over another chain of islands in the East China Sea, called Diaoyu by China and Senkaku by Japan, which sit in rich fishing grounds that may also harbour energy resources. China has 16 naval vessels and two submarines taking part in the exercises while Russia has four

warships, according to state media. They will focus on joint air defence, anti-submarine tactics and search and rescue, as well as simulated rescue of hijacked vessels and antiterrorism drills. “This joint military exercise is a long scheduled one between China and Russia in order to uphold regional peace and stability,” foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told a regular news briefing on Thursday. China and Russia have together participated in four military exercises since 2005, some involving other countries, state media has said. China’s drills with Russia have taken place through a regional grouping, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which groups the two with central Asian countries in a forum originally established to counter NATO influence. With military cooperation between the old Cold War allies on the rise, some analysts questioned the value of China holding exercises with Russia, given Moscow’s diminished role. “It’s worrisome to its neighbours,” said Joshua Eisenman, senior fellow in China studies at the Washingtonbased American Foreign Policy Council. “Countries like Korea, Japan, Vietnam and India are already concerned about China’s role in the region,” he told AFP. “From a Chinese perspective, I don’t see the value of this type of military exercise to building long-term

strategic trust with its neighbours.” Earlier this month, China and the Philippines dispatched vessels to enforce rival claims to a group of islands in the South China Sea. The Philippines and the United States also started major war games as a timely boost to their military alliance, as part of Washington’s “pivot” towards Asia, which has provoked displeasure from China. The People’s Liberation Army Daily, a newspaper known for its nationalistic editorial stance, on Saturday issued a warning to the United States over its participation. “The mentality behind this sort of military exercise will lead to the road of military confrontation and armed force as a resolution,” the newspaper said. Chinese experts see the exercises with Russia as giving its military chances to interact with a modern navy. Yin Zhuo, an expert who advises the Chinese navy, said the number of ships involved was unprecedented. “Both sides will have deep exchanges in terms of tactics and technology,” Yin told state television. Japan has so far not commented on the Sino-Russian drills. But Japan’s defence ministry said in a recent report that China was becoming increasingly active in waters near Japanese territory while Russia was holding more frequent military exercises in its fareast region. ■ (AFP – Beijing, China – April

Imperial Chinese bowl fetches $27 million AN extremely rare Chinese porcelain bowl fetched nearly $27 million – smashing pre-sale estimates by about three times – at a hotly anticipated Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong on Wednesday, April 4. The modest-looking imperial ceramic bowl that was made around 900 years ago had been expected to fetch up to HK$80 million, but it was snapped up by an unidentified telephone bidder for HK$208 million ($26.7 million). The price sets a new world record for a piece of ceramic from the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), according to Sotheby’s, beating a 2008 record when a “Guan” Mallet Vase went for HK$67.52 million. “The Ruyao Washer is among the most sophisticated achievements in Chinese ceramics. Its appearance on the market has created enormous excitement,” Sotheby’s Asia deputy chairman Nicolas Chow said. Eight hopefuls competed for over 15 minutes during intense bidding for the extraordinarily rare flower-shaped bowl. The interest and price is testament to the vitality of Asia’s art market, which has witnessed explosive growth over the past decade, experts say. “Ru” ceramics – named after one of five large kilns operating under the Song – are

the rarest in China, and it is estimated that only 79 complete pieces remain in the world, most in museums. The “Ruyao Washer” is the only bowl that features an organic floral shape and an opaque glaze. Hong Kong has emerged as one of the biggest auction centres after New York and London, fuelled by China’s economic boom and demand from Asian collectors, especially mainland Chinese buyers, who have pushed up Chinese art prices. Besides art pieces, mainland Chinese are also regular buyers of the top lots at sales of wine and jewellery. ■ (AFP – Hong Kong – April 4, 2012)

Australians play ‘two-up’ on only day it is legal AUSTRALIANS thronged pubs around the country to gamble on a noisy bar game known as “two-up” on Wednesday, April 25 the one day of the year when it is legal – in an annual ritual linked to remembrance day. The uniquely Australian tradition, in which punters bet on whether two coins both land the same way up, is associated with soldiers because it was popular with troops during World War I and is played every ANZAC Day on April 25. For many, the game is an important part of commemorations to mark the ill-fated landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at Gallipoli during World War I. “It’s not really about winning I don’t think, it’s about everyone

getting together and yelling and having a good time,” explained engineer Sam Hawdon, who said he was ahead after betting at The Australian hotel in The Rocks, the historical heart of Sydney. “Makes for a good day.” Two-up is played by one person standing in the centre of a ring, with two coins on a hand-held wooden paddle which they flip to toss the coins. Gamblers bet either on both coins turning up heads or both showing tails. There is no banker, with punters yelling out their bets in the crowd in the hope of finding someone to match their wager and bet heads to their tails, or tails to their heads. “You either bet on heads or tails and whoever bets heads holds the money,” said Hawdon.

“You can bet any amount of money you want, typically the value of notes. “And it’s good that anyone who holds the money, the bets, they don’t do a runner... because it’s completely not the spirit of the day.” At the Harbour View Hotel, which sits in the shade of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, also in The Rocks, the floor is sticky with spilled beer and the caller of the two-up is a man in drag yelling “Come in spinner” to start the game. As tourists and veterans look on in amusement, drinking beer, people in the crowd exchange money and bet on the tosses. The game was long outlawed in Australia, and players often appointed a look-out, known as the “cockatoo” after the local bird, but

states have gradually allowed the playing of the game on ANZAC Day. “One of the best days of the

Philippine government websites hit by Chinese hackers

A woman uses a keyboard in Hong Kong with keys illustrating Chinese “radicals” or “particles”. Hackers claiming to come from China defaced the website of the Philippines’ top university on Friday, April 20 to assert their country’s claim over the hotly disputed South China Sea, the government said.

‘Chinese’ hackers deface Philippine website

HACKERS claiming to come from China defaced the website of the Philippines’ top university on Friday, April 20 to assert their country’s claim over the hotly disputed South China Sea, the government said. The foreign department, which has been leading the government’s response over its increasingly tense rift with China, immediately called for an investigation into the attack on the University of the Philippines website. A screenshot of the defaced website, www.up.edu.ph, showed a map with Chinese script that highlighted islands in the South China Sea that are claimed by the Philippines and China. “We come from China! Huangyan Island is Ours,” the map’s caption read. Huangyan is the Chinese name for the Scarborough Shoal, where

the two countries have had vessels stationed for nearly two weeks in a standoff to assert their rival claims to the area. Foreign department spokesman Raul Hernandez suggested the hacking could be linked to the standoff. “These computer hacking(s) are sometimes... done by some people who are passionately affected and involved in the discussion,” he told reporters. “There has to be an investigation first to find out who exactly did this.” The university temporarily shut the site down after the attack was detected on Friday, Jason Chao, network engineer of the school’s computer centre, told AFP. “We’re in the process of restoring the site, but first we have to make sure that this will not happen again,” he said. ■ (AFP – April 20, 2012)

THE Philippines said alleged Chinese hackers attacked three websites maintained by President Benigno Aquino’s office on Monday, April 23. 0The attacks came shortly after the government said it would raise its concerns with the United States over an increasingly tense territorial sea dispute with China. Aquino’s office, in a statement, said a “significant spike in traffic with malicious URL requests” flooded the president’s official gazette (www.gov. ph) and two other websites (www. pcdspo.gov.ph, www.malacanang. gov.ph) run by his communications team.

“Information gathered through our data analysis indicated that the attack originated from IP (internet protocol) addresses were assigned to Chinese networks,” the statement said. The attack caused a “temporary disruption of service,” the statement added. Monday’s attack came three days after hackers claiming to be from China defaced the website of the Philippines’ top governmentrun university to assert their country’s claim over South China Sea. Local reports said a group of Philippine hackers calling itself

“Anonymous” allegedly retaliated by hacking two Chinese government websites. Philippine Foreign Ministry spokesman Raul Hernandez earlier Monday condemned the cyber attacks and called on hackers from both sides to stop the online war. “We denounce such cyber attacks regardless from which side they are coming from,” Hernandez said. “We think they are counterproductive and only add to the tension. We call on both Filipino and Chinese netizens to be more responsible and encourage dialogue rather than discord,” he said. ■ (AFP – April 23, 2012)

Philippine fisherman dead in collision with US forces

A fisherman died when his boat collided with a US Special Forces vessel deployed in the far south of the Philippines on a mission to contain Islamic extremists, authorities said Friday, April 20. The US embassy in Manila expressed condolences for the incident, which occurred Wednesday night off the remote island of Basilan, regarded as a stronghold of the al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group. Colonel Ricardo Visaya, Philippine military commander of the island, said the Americans were returning to the nearby port of Zamboanga after delivering medicine to a Basilan community when the two vessels collided. “The Special Forces failed to see the smaller vessel in the dark,” Visaya told reporters, adding that the dead Filipino’s son was injured.

A US embassy statement said the American military was fully cooperating with an investigation. “We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victim,” the statement said.

The US Special Forces unit, believed to number several hundred, arrived in the region in early 2002 to provide training and intelligence to local forces. ■ (AFP – Zamboanga, Philippines – April 20, 2012)

Hollywood studios lose landmark download case Martin Parry, AFP TOP Hollywood film studios Friday, April 20 failed in their attempt to stem the flow of illegal downloads when they lost a landmark appeal against an Australian Internet provider. A group of international and Australian companies, including Warner Bros, Disney and 20th Century Fox, alleged that iiNet authorised the infringement of their copyright when its customers downloaded movies and television programmes. In a world-first judgement in 2010, Australia’s Federal Court ruled iiNet did not authorise the downloads or have the power to stop them, thwarting the studios’ attempt to staunch losses they say run into billions of dollars. The Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT), made up of 34 film, television and music companies, appealed, claiming it set a dangerous precedent that allowed Internet companies to ignore copyright theft. But in a serious blow to their fight against piracy it was thrown out by Australia’s highest court Friday. “The High Court held that the respondent, an Internet service provider (ISP), had not authorised the infringement by its customers of the appellants’ copyright in commercially released films and television programmes,” the unanimous ruling said. It added that iiNet had no direct technical power to prevent its customers from using the

BitTorrent file sharing system to infringe copyright, by downloading content to watch on their laptops and PCs. “Rather, the extent of iiNet’s power to prevent its customers from infringing... copyright was limited to an indirect power to terminate its contractual relationship with its customers,” the court said. The case was seen as an ambitious attempt to force ISPs to act against piracy. It hinged on thousands of downloads over the Perth-based iiNet network over 59 weeks from June 2008 involving nearly 90 films and TV series including “Batman Begins”, “Transformers” and “Heroes”. The movie studios had hoped to set a worldwide precedent forcing ISPs to act against offenders, while Internet rights groups feared it would compel the firms to cut customers’ web access without having to take them to court. AFACT managing director Neil Gane said the judgement exposed the failure of copyright law to keep pace with the online environment. “Both judgements in this case recognise that copyright law is no longer equipped to deal with the rate of technological change we have seen since the law of authorisation was last tested,” he said. Gane added that the global film and television industry, represented by the Los Angeles-based Motion Picture Association, was pursuing other avenues including targeting the software developers behind BitTorrent technology. iiNet chief executive Michael

An Australian court found iiNet had no direct power to prevent customers from using the BitTorrent file sharing system.

Malone said the best way for the film industry to protect copyright was to boost the availability of lawful, online content in a more timely and affordable way. He added that there was strong evidence that content partnerships and agreements between ISPs, legal websites and copyright holders was the best way to reduce piracy, rather than costly legal battles. “Increasing the availability of licensed digital content is the best, most practical approach to meet consumer demand and protect copyright,” Malone said. “We have consistently said we are eager to work with the studios to make their very desirable material legitimately available to a waiting customer base and that offer remains the same today.” ■ (AFP – Sydney, Australia – April 20, 2012)

Honda Philippines to resume importing from Thailand HONDA Cars Philippines. Inc. will again import cars and parts from Thailand starting around middle of the year, HCPI president Tatsuya Natsume told reporters in an interview Monday, April 23. Operations at Honda Thailand returned to normal last March 26, Tatsuya said at the sidelines of the new CR-V launch in Pasay City. “So in a month or two, we can resume importation.” However, the Thailand facility–devastated by floods last November–is giving their local demand the priority before filling in orders from the Philippine, he noted. Honda Philippines used to import the CR-V, Jazz and Accord models as well as completely knocked down units of the Civic

from Thailand until the factory there was inundated by floods. The Civic units were assembled at the Honda factory in Santa Rosa, Laguna. “Eventually, in the upcoming months, Honda Automobile Thailand will also resume the supply of automobile component parts for assembly as well as complete built-up cars to the Philippines,” said Yuishi Fukuda, general manager of the Automobile Business Division of Asian Honda Motor Co. Ltd. “And we are very much excited in bringing back the joy to our customers here,” he added. With the chain supply for parts and units disrupted by the flooding in Thailand, HCPI was forced to close shop from November 2011 to January 2012.

Last February, Honda Philippines resumed operations by filling the supply gap with car models from imported from Japan.

Last March, Honda sold 1,631 units, the highest number of cars it sold in 20 months. That, according to the HCPI

president, reflected the turnaround for Honda that started in February. “All of the new models of Honda enjoyed full month sales and healthy availability in March, which enabled us to be number one in passenger car segment for the month of March 2012,” Natsume said. The fourth-generation CR-V, launched Monday, was the first ever in Southeast Asia, Natsume said. The automatic transmission CR-V in 2.0 and 2.4-liter variants costs from ₱1.4 million to ₱1.6 million. The first edition of the model was also launched in the Philippines, after Japan, in 1997, as well as the second (2001) and third (2006) generations. ■ (VS, GMA News – April 23, 2012)

Hackers hit Philippines websites amid China dispute PHILIPPINE government websites are under heavy attack from hackers, apparently from China, amid a tense territorial dispute between the two countries in the South China Sea, officials said Thursday, April 26. While some Philippine hackers have reportedly launched retaliatory attacks, the government appealed to them for restraint, said Roy Espiritu, spokesman of the government’s information technology office. “We’ve actually detected several attacks, including attempts at distributed denial of service,” he said, in which a hacker infiltrates computers with which to attack a single target, such as a website, forcing it to shut down. “They (hackers) are probing into different (Philippine) government

domains so we can’t say how many attacks there are. But it is a lot,” Espiritu told AFP. “The signatures (of the hackers) indicate they are from Chinese networks.” Espiritu conceded this could be a ruse and the attacks may have actually originated from other sources. But he said all the attacks came after Philippine ships faced off with Chinese patrol vessels in April 8 in the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. Before that, there had been no such attacks. The Chinese vessels initially prevented the Philippine Navy from arresting alleged Chinese poachers in the area. The stand-off is continuing. Budget Secretary Florencio Abad

said his agency’s website had again been defaced on Wednesday, just days after a similar hacking attack. Earlier, three of President Benigno Aquino’s websites and a state university website were also attacked, supposedly by hackers from China. In at least one case, the hackers left a message asserting China’s claim to the South China Sea. Espiritu said the technology office had implemented its own “firewall procedures” to fend off many of the attacks and was working with lawenforcement agencies to investigate them. He called for restraint from vengeful local hackers. “We would like to request them to be the bigger man and not escalate the situation.” ■ (AFP – Manila, Philippines – April 26, 2012)

A senior US commander in the Pacific reaffirmed the United States’ mutual defence treaty with the Philippines Sunday, April 22 amid increased tensions between the archipelago and China. In the strongest comments yet from an American official on the South China Sea dispute, Commander of the US Marines in the Pacific Lieutenant General Duane Thiessen said the Philippines and US were bound by a military agreement. “The United States and the Philippines have a mutual defence treaty which guarantees that we get involved in each other’s defense and that is self explanatory,” he told reporters in Puerto Princesa, the capital of Palawan. Thiessen was responding to a question about whether the US would provide assistance if Chinese armed forces attacked Philippine units over conflicting claims to the Scarborough Shoal which have flared up in recent weeks. The US commander did not elaborate on what kind of assistance would be provided. He also stressed that USPhilippine military exercises that began last week were not directed at China and not linked to territorial tensions. “There is no direct linkage. There is no tie between Scarborough Shoal and US movement in the Pacific,” he said. His remarks came after Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario issued a statement calling on other countries to take a stand on

China’s alleged aggressiveness in the region. “Since the freedom of navigation and unimpeded commerce in the (South China Sea) are of great import to many nations, all should consider what China is endeavouring to do in the Scarborough Shoal,” del Rosario said. “All, not just the Philippines will be ultimately negatively affected if we do not take a stand,” he said in an SMS message sent to reporters. Chinese and Philippine ships began a standoff in Scarborough Shoal on April 8, giving increased attention to the annual joint military exercise this year. A Philippine coast guard ship and two Chinese vessels are still facing off over the two countries’ conflicting claims to the shoal, about 230 kilometres (140 miles) from the main Philippine island of Luzon. A Chinese military paper recently warned that the latest USPhilippine exercise increased the threat of an armed confrontation in the region. China claims all of the South China Sea, even up to the coasts of other countries including the Philippines, directly conflicting with the claims of many of its neighbours. While the Philippines concedes it cannot stand up to China’s military might, officials have also cited its 1951 mutual defence treaty which calls on the United States to come to the country’s aid in case of external attack. Philippine Embassy honors young Filipinos chosen as Olympic Torchbearers PHILIPPINE EMBASSY IN LONDON, April 2, 2012 – “The games have not yet begun, but it’s like the Philippines already has a gold medal.” This was the sentiment expressed today at the Philippine Embassy by Reymund Enteria and Steven Cheung, two members of the Filipino community in the UK who were chosen from tens of thousands of nominees to serve as Torchbearers for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Messrs. Enteria and Cheung were invited by Ambassador Enrique Manalo to the Embassy to recognize the young men’s achievements as well as provide them an opportunity to share their inspirational stories with the rest of the Filipino community. “Our kababayans all over the world are very proud of your selection as Olympic Torchbearers,” said Ambassador Manalo, “and we will all be looking for your parts of the relay and loudly cheering you on.”

Both men spoke of the long process and difficult odds they faced before finally experiencing the joy of being officially named one of the torchbearers of the Olympic flame. Their selection, they said, was due in no small part to their work and achievements as Filipinos in the UK. Mr. Enteria is a Senior Occupational Therapist at the Raphael Medical Centre in Kent who focuses on neurological rehabilitation and mental health patients. He has received several professional awards and commendations for his work. “Being chosen as a torchbearer is a true honor, and I dedicate my run to all my fellow OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers)” Mr. Enteria said. Mr. Cheung , in turn, is an Olympic Youth Ambassador for his home borough of Waltham Forest, responsible for ensuring that the voices of the youth are heard by senior officials. Despite his young age, he already has

a long history of working with government offices, businesses and charity organizations. Mr. Cheung is also co-founder of the SCF Foundation which seeks to elevate the presence of Filipinos in the UK through trade, social enterprise, volunteering, and political participation. “I hope my run does inspire Filipinos and young people everywhere to become more actively engaged with their communities” said Mr. Cheung. Mr. Enteria and Mr. Cheung will each run 300 metre stretches of the torch relay, with Mr. Enteria’s stage taking place in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham on 22 July, while Mr. Cheung will run in the London Borough of Waltham Forest on 21 July. Both men expressed hope that Filipinos in the UK will turn out in great numbers to witness the Olympic flame passing through the country, and go on to cheer the Philippine team at the games. ■

THE Philippine Embassy in London advises all Filipinos in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland that unidentified individuals or groups are engaging in a new telephone scam meant to fraudulently obtain money from relatives in the Philippines of Filipinos residing and/or working in the UK. The modus operandi of these fraudsters is to telephone the parent or other close relatives in the Philippines informing them that their son/daughter/relative has been

arrested or had been involved in a serious accident. The fraudster will then claim that he or she is the Philippine Ambassador, a Consul or otherwise an official of the Philippine Embassy in London. The parent or close relative will thereafter be requested to immediately send money purportedly to allow the Philippine Embassy to work for the immediate release from prison or hospital of the OFW and arrange for their immediate repatriation to the Philippines. Please be advised that the

Philippine Embassy in London, through its Assistance-to-Nationals Unit, extends assistance to Filipinos in distress at no monetary cost to them or their family. Coordination with an OFW’s family in the Philippines is primarily made through the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila. In urgent cases, the Embassy may call the family directly to convey information or secure other details or authorizations from the family, but never to solicit money. In order to avoid unauthorized

Advisory on new telephone scam disclosure of the name, telephone number and other contact details of their immediate family in the Philippines, all Filipinos in the UK are strongly urged not to disclose such personal information to persons who are not known to them or are not legitimate banking or remittance companies. It is especially recommended that any unsolicited email requesting such details, in relation to alleged cash prizes from lottery or raffle, be ignored and deleted by the recipient.

In case of any suspicious telephone calls, allegedly emanating from the Philippine Embassy in London and/or which follow the above-mentioned modus operandi, any parent or relative in the Philippines should either directly contact their appropriate relative in the UK or the Philippine Embassy in London (Email: embassy@ philemb.co.uk / Telephone Number +44 20 7451 1805 or 1803 or 1826). ■ (Embassy of the Philippines, London, 12 April 2012)

Running round The Rock in aid of the Bahay Bata Centre ON July 28, 2012, Sarah Faraday is about to complete her first ultra, running 48 miles around the entire coastline of Jersey in aid of the Bahay Bata Centre in the Philippines, which is an amazing centre working with street children, many of whom have been affected by the sex industry. The centre and school do an amazing job with not much money. Her aim is to raise at least £2,000 for them and establish a livelihood programme so that a small amount is long lasting and has maximum benefit for each child. She is paying her own expenses to get to Jersey so all the money is going directly to the charity. Sarah, a keen runner, visited the centre in 2010 and has wanted to find a way to help the centre since then.

She believes she’s found it! Putting herself through the ultimate challenge of a 48 mile ultra to complete in a single day. Speaking of the training and the race, she says: “It is going to be tough but I am up for the challenge. I will be completing the Brighton marathon for the second time this year and then will up the training stakes until July 28th”. If anyone would like to sponsor her then you can check out her blog here: http://sarahfaraday. co.uk/roundtherock/ where you can donate, get in contact, and follow her preparation. You can also read more about the centre and see some photos from her time with the centre at http://www.sarahfaraday. co.uk/project/bahay-bata/. Thank you. ■

Rare turtles returned to the Philippines THIRTY-one live turtles, including some of the world’s rarest species that were smuggled to Hong Kong were flown back to the Philippines on Friday, April 27 but five others did not live to make the trip, an official said. It will mark the first time a protected Philippine species seized from the illegal wildlife trade abroad has been returned, Luz Corpuz, deputy wildlife chief of the environment department told AFP. Three environment department workers arrived at Manila international airport carrying the turtles in a wooden crate more than two months after they were recovered from a Chinese smuggler in February, said Theresa Lim. “The turtles are fine, active. Unfortunately, two of the pond turtles and three Asian box turtles died in Hong Kong due to stress,” said Lim, director of the government wildlife bureau. She said the turtles suffered stress when they were kept hidden as they were smuggled into Hong Kong. The turtles, many slightly larger than the size of a matchbox, were cradled in pink foam-like material soaked in water in individual compartments inside the crate. “They are Philippine species, and returning them back to their natural habitat is a big accomplishment for our conservation efforts,” Corpuz said of the Philippine pond turtles, which are found only in the island of Palawan. “In the past we had routinely allowed protected wildlife confiscated abroad to be turned over to their local shelters because we do not have money. “This time we’re lucky because we

have a little money left and we would like to enhance our enforcement activities.” Swiss-based International Union for the Conservation of Nature lists the 21-centimetre (8.3-inch) pond turtle, Siebenrockiella leytensis, as “critically endangered” and “one of the rarest and least known turtles in the world”. The 20-centimetre box turtle, Cuora amboinensis, is listed as “vulnerable” in the Philippines, though it is also found in other tropical countries of Southeast Asia. The animals, will be taken to the western island of Palawan, Lim told AFP. The Katala Foundation, a private wildlife protection group, will rehabilitate the animals for about three months before they are released back into the wild. The Chinese smuggler was arrested at Hong Kong International Airport on February 8 after the turtles were seized from his luggage. He was charged and fined HK$8,000 ($1,000) under local laws aimed at protecting endangered species of animals and plants. Trafficking in pond turtles is punishable by a six-year prison term and a million-peso ($23,447) fine in the Philippines, but Corpuz admitted the government did not have enough resources to enforce the law. “We don’t know who were responsible for smuggling them to Hong Kong, but the turtles could have most likely ended up as medicine, as pets, or as food in Chinese restaurants,” she said. ■ (AFP – Manila,

Two new frog species found in Philippines Vietnamese held over Philippines – April 27, 2012)

Philippines turtle catch THE Philippines detained 12 Vietnamese fishermen and their Malaysian-flagged boat for collecting endangered fish and sea turtles and poaching, an official said Wednesday, April 25. 0The Filipino coast guard intercepted four fishing vessels in the Sulu Sea off the Malaysian state of Borneo late Sunday, but three escaped as the fourth was being boarded, fisheries bureau director James Perez said. “Unfortunately we apprehended only one because the three other vessels resisted,” he told AFP. Officials found humphead wrasse, an endangered species of fish, on board the detained boat and about 50 sea turtles, including critically endangered hawksbill turtles, already dead and smothered in ice in its hold, he added. “This is a Malaysian-flagged vessel, but the crew are Vietnamese,” he said. “We have filed a criminal complaint against them.”

The hawksbill turtle, Eretmochelys imbricata, grows up to 85 centimetres (33 inches) and can weigh up to 75 kilograms (165 pounds). The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) says it is “critically endangered” because it has been exploited for years as the sole source of commercial tortoise shell. The humphead or Napoleon wrasse, Cheilinus undulatus, which grows up to 2.3 metres and weighs up to 191 kilogrammes, is one of the world’s largest reef fish. Swiss-based IUCN classes it as “endangered” and says its numbers have fallen hugely over the past 30 years, a situation that it predicts will accelerate further due to rising live fish demand. Catching or trafficking in critically endangered Philippine species is punishable by a six-year prison term and a million-peso ($23,000) fine, the environment department said. ■ (AFP – April 25, 2012)

TWO new species of frog have been discovered in fast-disappearing forests in the Philippines, boosting hopes for the survival of the country’s rich but threatened wildlife, scientists said Tuesday, April 17. The new discoveries are a mottled brown frog with red eyes and a broad yellow stripe running down its back, and a yellow-green one not much bigger than a human thumb, Britishbased Fauna and Flora International said. efforts in the Philippines, which has extremely diverse plant and animal life but where many species are threatened by extinction. “Many (environmental) institutions and funding agencies have written off the Philippines because we only have 20 percent of our forests left,” he said at a forum at the National Museum where the finds were announced to the public. “Yet many of these species, even if they are threatened, have this resiliency.” His team discovered the frogs in Leyte island’s Nacolod mountain range in November last year. Their dwindling habitat also harboured 62 other reptiles and amphibian species, 36 mammal species, 112 bird species, and 229 plant species. “A lot of these are critically endangered because of fragmentation,” Mallari said. The Nacolod range’s onceexpansive forest cover is almost gone, with trees cut down for timber or burnt off to free up land for farming, he said. The remaining patches of forest are no longer visible by satellite.

The long-term survival of the diverse species will depend on the Philippines’ ability to protect habitats from further exploitation, Mallari said. The brown frog specimens measured about 43-55 millimetres (1.7-2.2 inches) while the yellowgreen ones were 20-27 millimetres (0.8-1.1 inches) long. They have not yet been formally named. US-based Conservation International lists the Philippines both as one of the 17 countries that harbour most of Earth’s plant and animal life, and a “biodiversity hotspot” due to massive habitat loss. Theresa Lim, wildlife protection chief of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, told the forum that despite this, apart from the frogs 36 new plant and animal species were discovered in the Philippines in the past 10 years. “We have to do something. We don’t want them to disappear immediately after they are discovered,” she said. ■ (AFP – Manila,

Cher ‘upset’ as Adelaide key sells for US$95,900 xmlUS singer Cher is “upset” and trying to get to the bottom of why a key to the city of Adelaide she was given in 1990 ended up on eBay, selling Thursday, April 26 for nearly US$100,000. The appearance of the brass key and an accompanying memorial plaque on the Internet auction house offended officials in the southern Australian city, with Adelaide mayor Stephen Yarwood saying he was “exceptionally disappointed.” “It must be very embarrassing for her if she is selling it because she needs the money,” Yarwood said last weekend. In a tweet, the ageing diva said she was mystified about it appearing on eBay. “I’m upset 2 & trying 2get2 bottom! I Think my office fkd up?.” she said on Twitter. The key and engraved plaque was

sold by a user called Authentic_Cher who claims to be the musician’s new “personal consignor”, saying the item was from her Malibu, California home. The auction closed Thursday morning after 146 bids from people around the world with the successful buyer paying US$95,900. Cher, 65, was awarded the key to the city in recognition of her performance at the 1990 Formula One Grand Prix. The man who presented it to her, former mayor Steve Condous, said he was bitterly disappointed at the sale. “If she didn’t want to keep it she should have returned it back to the city,” he said. Cher has earned both Oscar glory in her acting career and Grammy glory in her musical career, selling over 100 million records. ■ (AFP –

Lady Gaga wows South Koreans as global tour kicks off

US pop diva Lady Gaga wowed tens of thousands of South Koreans at the opening show of her global tour Friday, April 27 with signature flamboyant outfits and a provocative performance. The star dazzled some 50,000 fans at the Olympic stadium in Seoul, with the audience wearing paper bracelets reading “18 above” issued by organisers in response to Seoul banning under-18s attending. The limit was imposed after a state ratings board judged the much-anticipated concert – her second in the nation – unsuitable for younger audiences, and ticket-

holders had to present ID cards to enter the venue. Lady Gaga rode onto the stage on horseback, wearing a glittering black bodysuit and an enormous black metal headpiece as screaming fans waved thousands of glowing sticks and chanted her name. “I was told that your government decided that my shows should be 18 or over... So, I’ll make sure it will be!” Lady Gaga shouted, to cheers from the crowd. The professional provocateur’s show included throwing dancers and herself into a giant fake meat grinder and staging scenes of machine gun

fire and simulated group and lesbian sex. The concert was the first in her “Born This Way Ball” tour, which will visit several Asian countries before going on to Australasia and Europe later this year. For her latest tour, which will take in venues across Asia and Europe, she will not disappoint on the fashion front, and her extravagant costumes include a leotard fashioned from guitars and a giant piano keyboard headpiece. The “Poker Face” singer is expected to do 110 shows this year following the success of her album “Born This Way”, which has sold nearly six million

copies worldwide since it was released in May 2011. The “Poker Face” and “Bad Romance” singer belted out more than 20 hits in a 100-minute show on a stage featuring a castle-shaped structure topped with an illuminated cross. The star, rated one of the 100 most influential fashion icons by the US magazine Time, showed off some 10 different outfits, ranging from a dress and a pair of heels fashioned out of raw meat to a skirt made of a piano keyboard and a frock fashioned out of plastic bubbles. will include a black bodysuit made of hundreds of glittering vinyl tubes sewn together with metal studs and glass pieces, and a long, skin-coloured latex tunic. Before the concert, dozens of Lady Gaga lookalikes in extravagant costumes inspired by the singer took souvenir pictures as hordes of fans waited in line outside the Seoul’s Olympic stadium, which was guarded by police and security guards. Some male fans wore leather corsets over black and white suits and black sunglasses with metal spikes, while scores of others put on facepaint to honour the “Bad Romance” singer known for her otherworldly dress sense. The concert prompted opposition from religious groups who accuse the US star Lady Gaga of advocating homosexuality and pornography with her provocative performances. The Korean Association of Church Communication vowed last month to take “concerted action to stop young people from being infected with homosexuality and pornography” by the US star’s concert. Outside the stadium on Friday, two foreign Christian protesters held placards reading “Lady Gaga. Go home!” and “Sexual purity, virginity, fidelity”, while about 20 South Korean Christian activists prayed. In another part of Seoul about 100 Christian activists gathered for a rally. “Lady Gaga... is a wounded soul that is in desperate need of restoration. Therefore Christians should love and bless her. We should hate the evil spirit behind her, not Lady Gaga herself,” they said in a leaflet. ■ (AFP – Seoul, South Korea – April 27, 2012)

Not all in Asia are Gaga over the Lady PHILIPPINES

ACCUSED of contaminating youngsters with “satanic” dance moves and “intolerable” outfits, the cult of Lady Gaga is on a collision course with Asia’s moral guardians ahead of her mammoth world tour. In other words, the performer – who goes by the name of Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta when not clad in outfits made of raw meat or tottering on vertigoinducing footwear – is doing her job as a provocative pop star. The multi-million-selling artist arrived in South Korea last week ahead of the first date of her “Born This Way Ball” at Seoul’s 70,000 seats Olympic Stadium Friday, April 27 the start of a touring juggernaut encompassing 110 dates. “I will perform the tour of your life,” the performer tweeted to her 23 million Twitter followers. The tour, featuring elaborate sets designed by in-house team Haus of Gaga, follows up on the success of her album “Born This Way”, which has sold nearly six million copies worldwide since it was released in May 2011. But amid the hype and clamour for tickets is a drum beat of protest from those who do not take the gender-bending antics of the frequently scantily-clad US performer lightly. Gaga will in June head to Indonesia, the world’s biggest Muslim nation, where Islamic leaders have said her risque outfits will not be tolerated. “I call on Lady Gaga to respect our cultural and traditional values. Most people here are Muslims and we cannot tolerate her revealing outfits and sexy performances,” the Indonesia Ulema Council leader Amidhan told AFP. He added, however, that the country’s highest Islamic body has no plan to issue a fatwa against her performing. “It’s better for Lady Gaga to cancel her show in this country if she has no willingness to respect our demand. Please do not destroy our nation’s morality and ruin our dignity,” said Amidhan, who goes by one name. Big Daddy, the promoters for the concert in Jakarta, said tickets began selling in early March and were sold out within two weeks. “We have informed Lady Gaga’s management (about these concerns), and they said that they will respect the country where she will perform”, said Hanny Marpaung, corporate secretary

for Big Daddy. But he added “we still don’t have any clue” about what she will wear. Four of the Giorgio Armani outfits Lady Gaga will wear for her Seoul concert were unveiled Monday, April 23 including a leotard fashioned from guitars and black body suit made of hundreds of glittering vinyl tubes sewn together with metal studs. Conservative Christian groups in South Korea have rallied against the self-styled “Mother Monster”, accusing her of promoting pornography and homosexuality on malleable young minds. South Korea has East Asia’s largest Christian community after the Philippines, with about 8.6 million Protestants and 5.1 million Catholics. About 10 million South Koreans are Buddhists. Scores of Protestant church members held a group prayer on Sunday against the concert, calling her dance moves “satanic” performances that “contaminate souls” of the country’s youth. South Koreans aged under 18 have been banned from the show, Lady Gaga’s second concert in the country, after the government rated it unsuitable for younger audiences. Internet portals and social network sites have been abuzz with intense debates, with most commentators accusing the religious groups of bigotry. “What an international embarrassment they are! Do they really believe they can violate other people’s right to enjoy her show?” said one anonymous user. In the Philippines, a youth organisation urged people to stay away from Gaga’s May 21 concert, saying it poses a threat to moral values in Asia’s largest Catholic nation. Organisers said fans have swiftly snapped up most tickets for the show, including the highest-priced 15,850-peso ($372) options. But Laurence Pintero, head of

the Manila-based Youth for Christ, criticised the government for allowing the concert to take place. “If the government thinks she is a threat, first and foremost they should stop it,” he said. “I think we should be bold. We discourage (people from) attending her concert.” Elsewhere in the region, Gaga has been embraced. In Japan, whose Manga art and cosplay – a phenomenon in which participants wear costumes representing a character or trend – are clearly some of her biggest influences, she is affectionately known as “Lady Gaga-san”. Gaga won more friends after declaring “Japan is safe” when she visited three months after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that left 19,000 dead and sparked the Fukushima nuclear crisis that helped decimate tourism. And in Australia she was crowned “Honorary Citizen of Sydney” for using her star power against “prejudice directed at gay men and women”. Then there’s the tiny Pacific atoll of Niue, about 2,500 kilometers (1,500 miles) northeast of New Zealand, which pledged that all of its 1,600 inhabitants would attend a Lady Gaga concert in a bid to lure her to its shores. Tickets for Lady Gaga’s shows in Singapore and Hong Kong sold out within hours, with three extra dates shows added at the Chinese territory’s Asia World-Expo venue as buyers queued for days for tickets. ■ (AFP – Hong Kong – April 25, 2012)

Hugh Jackman’s ‘The Wolverine’ to be shot in Australia

THE latest instalment of the X-Men franchise, “The Wolverine”, starring Hugh Jackman, will be shot in Australia, it was announced Friday, April 20. The potential blockbuster was due to be filmed in Japan last year but the devastation from the tsunami and earthquake that hit in March put production on hold. Sydney-born Jackman, who will reprise the role of the metal-clawed, muscled-up mutant, said he could not be more excited. “It will be great to work with the highly talented crew and to provide employment opportunities to so many people across all levels of the industry,” he said in a statement. “Not to mention, Deb and I will get to spend some time with the family back in Australia,” he added, referring to his wife.

“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, the fourth film in the franchise and a prequel to the original trilogy, was also filmed in Australia in 2008. Other large-scale productions to have been made Down Under recently include “The Great Gatsby” and “Happy Feet 2.” Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the movie would result in over Aus$80 million (US$83 million) of investment in Australia and create more than 2,000 jobs. “This new chapter in the Wolverine series will help develop the skills and experience of our film sector – jobs that we want to keep here in Australia, not overseas,” she said. “A healthy Australian film sector is essential if we are to produce and see Australian content at the cinema, on our TV screens and online into the future.” ■

SPORTS STUDY GROWING up as the odd one out may be what gives left-handed people an advantage in the sports arena, where they have the element of surprise, said a study published Wednesday, April 25. About one in ten people are lefthanded, but in a number of sports like boxing, fencing and table tennis, they were overrepresented to the tune of about one in five, study co-author Mark Panaggio told AFP. In baseball, more than 30 percent of athletes were southpaws – and for the top hitters in the US major league the figure rose to 58 percent. “Left-handers have a slight boost in their skill ability just due to inherently being left-handed,” Panaggio said of the findings published in Britain’s Journal of the Royal Society Interface. The study used a mathematical model to test the assertion that hand preference arises from an evolutionary need to balance cooperation (as in hunting in groups) and competition (as in battle or sports). “If you have a left-hander facing a right-hander, the left-hander would have spent the majority of his time competing against right-

handed individuals because they are more common... whereas the right-hander would have had very little experience against lefthanders,” the scientist said. “In those type of confrontations the left-handed person should have an advantage.” However, the inverse is also true. Only about six percent of quarterbacks in American football were left-handed, Panaggio said. Five of the world’s 120 top male golfers were left-handed, and none of the top 100 women. “We believe that it is due to the fact that it is difficult to find equipment for them to play with,” said Panaggio, of Northwestern University in Illinois. Until well into the 20th century, schoolchildren risked beatings for writing with their left hands. The English word “sinister” derives from the Latin for left. Yet left-handers have occupied a disproportionate place in US politics. Before Barack Obama, four of the past five US presidents were also lefties – Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan (who was ambidextrous), George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. The study pointed out that lefthanders had a higher accidental death rate. ■ (AFP – April 26, 2012)

Rosales is playing her first LPGA tournament of the season.

JENNIFER Rosales came alive with five back-nine birdies to join Lindsay Wright, Caroline Hedwall and Katie Futcher atop a crowded leaderboard in the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic. The quartet were tied for the lead on five-under par 67, with another eight players right behind them on 68. The Philippines’ Rosales, who won the most recent of her two LPGA Tour titles in 2005, was even through nine before her late surge on the par-72 The Crossings course. Rosales is playing her first LPGA tournament of the season. After finishing 124th on the money list last year she has limited tour status. She said she’d enjoyed her offseason activities, including scuba diving, and was trying not to put too much pressure on herself. “Actually, you know what? It’s better not to expect anything,” Rosales said. “I just came out here and wanted to play and see this weekend. Actually, today was an easy day for me. I hit most of the fairways and greens. I only missed I think a green today. My putting was very good today.” Futcher briefly took sole possession of the lead at six-under

through 17 holes, but dropped back into a tie with a bogey at her last hole, the par-four ninth. Both Australia’s Wright and Sweden’s Hedwall played without a bogey. “It feels like it’s kind of target golf and I like that,” Hedwall said. “I enjoy just hitting it where it stops where you hit it, too. I like that and I think I did that well today.” Wright, who won the New Zealand Women’s Open in February, also said her day was uneventful. “I just played a nice round of golf,” she said. “I wish it was like that every day.” The big group on 68 was led by South Korean Sun Young Yoo, winner of the first women’s major of the year at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. “I hit the ball well and putted well,” Yoo said. “I missed a couple putts, but four-under is a good score so I’m pretty happy with where I’m at right now.” She was joined by fellow South Korean’s Haeji Kang and MJ Hur along with Stacy Lewis, Morgan Pressel, Colombia’s Mariajo Uribe, Sydnee Michaels and Cindy LaCrosse. Another eight players shot 69. ■ (AFP – Alabama, USA – April 27, 2012)

TWO WORLD TITLE FIGHTS ON PACQUIAO UNDERCARD ©AFP/File

BOXING

UNBEATEN Mike Jones and Guillermo Rigondeaux will fight for world titles on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s June 9 bout against undefeated Tim Bradley, promoters announced on Thursday, April 26. Filipino icon Pacquiao, 54-3 with two drawn and 38 knockouts, will defend his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown against unbeaten Bradley, 28-0 with 12 knockouts, in the main event at Las Vegas, Nevada. Jones, 26-0 with 19 knockouts,

will face US compatriot Randall Bailey, 41-7 with 36 knockouts, for the vacant International Boxing Federation welterweight crown. Cuban southpaw Rigondeaux, 9-0 with seven knockouts, defends the World Boxing Association super-bantamweight title against American Teon Kennedy, 17-1 with two drawn and seven knockouts. It will be the first world title fight for Jones, who at 29 is eight years younger than Bailey, who is 3-0 since losing to Colombia’s

Juan Urango in 2009 in an IBF light-welterweight world title bout. Bailey also lost a world title fight to Miguel Cotto in 2004. Rigondeaux, who at 31 gives up six years to Kennedy, is a two-time Olympic champion and seven-time Cuban national champion who only made his pro debut in 2009. He won the crown by stopping Puerto Rican Rico Ramos in the sixth round last January. Kennedy will be in his first world title bout. ■ (AFP – April 27, 2012)

‘Boxers should shut up and fight’

FORMER world champion Ricky Hatton has called for Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr to face each other in the ring THE 33-year-old Filipino Pacquiao and American Mayweather, 35, have tried several times to get a contract signed for a world title fight but have failed for a number of reasons, including disagreements over blood testing and a share of the purse. Their failure to agree a deal has led some observers to suggest that Pacquiao, regarded by many in the sport as the world’s best pound-forpound fighter, and the unbeaten Mayweather are trying to put off boxing each other. “If you want to be the best then you fight the best and those two should fight each other,” Hatton, 33, said during a visit to Hong Kong where the former British boxer was scouting new talent. “I’ve never been shy of wanting

to fight the best and I refuse to believe that Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are avoiding each other, and don’t want to fight, because if they are they are sadly not the champions I thought they were,” Hatton, now a boxing promoter, added. “One thing I wanted to do from day one was fight the best,” said Hatton whose only two professional defeats came to Pacquiao and Mayweather. The former welterweight and light-welterweight world champion nicknamed “The Hitman” lost to Mayweather when he was knocked out in the 10th round in Los Angeles in December 2007 and was humiliated by Pacquiao almost two years later when he suffered a KO in just the second round. “In the ring I know firsthand how good they actually are,” he said, “Floyd Mayweather was the

best in my career and I wanted to fight him.” Hatton said it was not a foregone conclusion that the two would meet but insisted that they must fight soon while both boxers are at the peak of their careers. “I don’t know (if it’s inevitable) but it should be a matter of time. That’s the obvious thing. “You don’t know what’s going on in their minds but it’s an obvious decision really. I would just say, 5050 let’s fight each other. “They ought to fight each other now while they are at their prime. “There’s no point them at 38 years of age saying, ‘We’ll get it on now.’ We want to see who is the best while they are both at their best.” Boxing fans have long sought a matchup between the two. Mayweather has even made a Twitter challenge for the Asian star to “Step Up, Punk”, but they have

not been able to work out a deal. In February Pacquiao described as “embarrassing” an offer by Mayweather to give the Philippine star a $US40 million ($38.6 million) lump-sum payment if Pacquiao agreed to let the American keep the pay per view earnings for the fight for himself. Mayweather, who has won titles in seven weight classes, is

scheduled to meet Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas next month for the latter’s WBA Super Welterweight title while Pacquiao faces unbeaten American Timothy Bradley on June 9. Boxing hero Pacquiao mixes religion and training.

BOXING icon Manny Pacquiao has combined his newfound religious fervor with his training for an upcoming fight, holding Bible-reading sessions after daily workouts. The 33-year-old Pacquiao, who faces unbeaten American Timothy Bradley on June 9 in Las Vegas, said he would also follow up his fight with a “preaching session” at one of the country’s biggest coliseums. “It is open to all religions,” he told reporters late Saturday in the mountainous resort city where he began altitude training last week. Pacquiao, formerly known for enjoying late-night parties and gambling, now ends almost every training day with a Bible session in an auditorium in the hotel which serves as his training camp. These sessions, which can go for over two hours, have attracted scores of people who come to see the boxing hero ask religious questions and quote from the Bible.

American boxing promoter Bob Arum, who handles Pacquiao’s fights, said he preferred this more devout fighter to the one who used to drink and gamble long into the night. “It is much better than the things he did in the past,” said Arum in a telephone interview on Sunday. Earlier this year, Pacquiao, regarded by many in the sport as the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter, announced he had undergone a religious conversion and was giving up all of his vices. As well as holding Bible-reading sessions with the country’s top broadcasting officials, Pacquiao has also carried out his duties as an elected legislator and host of a popular television game show. However, he has insisted that his faith has not affected his fighting skills, which have made him an eight-time world champion with a record of 54-3 with two draws. ■ (AFP - Baguio, Philippines – April 22, 2012)
