EDITORIAL With the 2006 Geneva Grand Prix d’Horlogerie award-winning TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 360 mechanical chronograph accurate to the 1/100th of a second, and the late-2007 launch of the Link Calibre S electro-mechanical chronograph accurate to the 1/100th of a second, TAG Heuer confirms its innovation leadership and its unrivalled engineering capacity to design and manufacture the most precise mechanical and electro-mechanical chronograph movements in the world. These two revolutionary and complex movements (watchmaking masters rightly consider chronographs to be the most sophisticated watchmaking complications) are made of more than 250 components and are manually assembled in TAG Heuer workshops in La Chaux-de-Fonds and Sion. The addition of these two watchmaking breakthroughs to its arsenal makes TAG Heuer the only luxury watchmaking brand capable of manufacturing sophisticated chronographs that are accurate to 1/10th, 1/100th and 1/1,000th of a second. In timekeeping, TAG Heuer goes even further, mastering 1/10,000th of a second. This feat is applied to many prestigious sport events, such as the Race of Champions organized this year in Wembley, which brings together the best drivers of all major world disciplines for a unique motor racing event. Motor racing and GT cars have always been a source of inspiration for TAG Heuer watch masters and engineers. More than any other watch brand, TAG Heuer has built its reputation for unsurpassable precision and high quality by partnering and supplying the best racing teams and drivers in the history of motor sports. TAG Heuer’s motor racing pedigree begins with its association with Juan Manuel Fangio in the 1950s, the Scuderia Ferrari in the 1970s, and, today, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. 2

faithful to their DNA. Developed, tested, and worn by champions such as Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Jeff Gordon, Kimi Räikkönen, and Sébastien Bourdais, they have achieved more wins and podiums in 2007 than any other watch brand in motor racing history, from Formula One to Nascar or Champcar. Besides motor racing, TAG Heuer sources its inspiration from prestigious and exclusive sports such as golf, sailing and tennis, working closely with great champions like Tiger Woods and Maria Sharapova. This has led to the development of the Professional Golf Watch and this year’s Professional Sports Watch, two one-of-a-kind timepieces combining ultimate ergonomy with extraordinary shock resistance and understated elegance. Maria Sharapova has also contributed to the design of the sparkling TAG Heuer Formula 1 lady diamonds chronograph, a stunning 120 diamond-set ladies timepiece that embodies TAG Heuer’s unique fusion of Sport and Glamour. This fusion is very much inspired by Hollywood and Bollywood. TAG Heuer has been active in the world of cinema since the 1960s, when it developed the Film Master stopwatch, which allowed film directors and editors to sequence movies with precision. Today, the legacy continues with Uma Thurman, Priyanka Chopra, Brad Pitt and Shah Rukh Khan, who work closely with TAG Heuer in the fields of design, innovation, performance and functionality.
The new Aquaracer series and the new TAG Heuer Carrera chronographs and ladies watches are testimony to the trend savviness that helps TAG Heuer produce timepieces that are contemporary and stylish, and perfect for any occasion, whether it be casual-chic, sporty and elegant. TAG Heuer manufactures its timepieces in Switzerland at three avantgarde workshops located in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Cornol and Sion. The brand produces most of its wondrous watchcases and high-end movements at these state-of-the-art facilities, and assembles and tests each and every timepiece, preparing them for export to its retailers. Present in more than 110 countries, TAG Heuer has one of the most extensive after-sales service networks, offering the utmost in fast, efficient and high quality service. For 148 years, TAG Heuer has set new milestones in the fields of innovation, precision, design and technology, and engineered daring, timeless, and high-quality Swiss made timepieces. We hope you will share and appreciate our passion for contemporary luxury watchmaking in the following pages.
TAG Heuer–Editorial
Partnered with McLaren since 1985, TAG Heuer is also the Official chronograph of the Mercedes McLaren SLR roadcar, probably the world’s most advanced GT dream machine ever developed. These close collaborations have allowed TAG Heuer to seize hold of new ideas, incorporate cutting-edge technologies into the manufacture of avant-garde watches and chronographs. They have enable TAG Heuer to torture-test timepieces in the most demanding and unforgiving conditions possible, taking on the vibrations, G-force and shocks unique to professional motor sports and producing timepieces that combine precision and quality at the highest level. The flagship of this GT and motor racing heritage and inspiration is the Monaco V4 belt-driven Concept Watch, which was presented in Baselworld 2004 and is currently under development in our prototyping and industrialization workshops. TAG Heuer also re-engineered the TAG Heuer Formula 1 watch this year, and celebrated the 20th anniversary of the iconic Link series with a full line-up of new automatic watches and chronographs. The TAG Heuer Carrera and Monaco series, however, probably best epitomize TAG Heuer’s unique racing and technological spirit and pedigree. These timepieces have been on the markets for decades, evolving over time as they are constantly upgraded and improved to guarantee their timelessness and contemporary style; yet they remain

CALIBRE 360 THE WORLD’S ONLY 1/100TH OF A SECOND MECHANICAL WRIST CHRONOGRAPH The first mechanical wrist chronograph movement to measure and display time to 1/100th of a second, the TAG Heuer Calibre 360 houses a specially engineered balance wheel that oscillates at an astonishing 360,000 beats per hour, making it 10 times faster than any other chronograph—a rate until now considered impossible. The result of TAG Heuer’s historic savoirfaire in the demanding field of high-precision timekeeping, the triple-patented chronograph combines a mechanical, stopwatch inspired counter, similar to the one on the 1916 Micrograph but miniaturized to fit a wristwatch, with a COSC-certified automatic hours-minutes-seconds movement.
A single crown, turned clockwise, operates the barrel of the manual chronograph, which, even with its incredibly high frequency, has a power reserve of 100 minutes. Turned anti-clockwise, it rewinds the automatic movement of the watch, which operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a power reserve of 42 hours. Two exciting new timepieces bearing the Calibre 360’s revolutionary technology have been developed:
CARRERA CALIBRE 360 ROSE GOLD
MONACO CALIBRE 360 LS CONCEPT CHRONOGRAPH
The Carrera Calibre 360 Rose Gold is a high-luxury tribute to the legendary Carrera series, with an elegant chocolate-brown guilloché dial, handapplied 18 ct rose gold hands and index; 18 ct rose gold watch case, and chocolate-brown, hand-sewn alligator strap. The elegant design and exquisite craftsmanship counter-balance the chronograph’s sobre, easy-to-read details, which are inspired by TAG Heuer’s vintage stopwatches. Finally, an exceptional movement is graced with the design, materials, and craftsmanship it deserves.
Winner of a 2007 Red Dot Design Award and a 2007 iF Design Award, the effortlessly easy-to-read Monaco Calibre 360 LS (Linear Second) uses meticulously handfinished engine bridges to reveal its oversized 1/100th of a second chronograph counter, embedded 15-minute chronograph counter at 9 o’clock, embedded 100-minute power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock, and linear second indicator at 3 o’clock. True to the square-faced original Monaco yet resolutely contemporary, the stunning design is highlighted by two rectangular sapphire crystal windows in the caseback, through which can be seen the Calibre 360 LS’s delicate movement, beautifully decorated with Côtes de Genève.

CALIBRE S THE CHRONOGRAPH REVOLUTION Three years after completely revolutionizing the basic precepts of mechanical watch design with the Monaco V4 beltdriven Concept Watch, TAG Heuer now re-invents chronograph technology with the Calibre S. This remarkable innovation developed, patented, and manufactured by TAG Heuer, challenges the traditional fundamentals of watchmaking, offering an entirely new way to measure and read time based on a system of bi-
directional hands that are mechanically independent yet synchronized, to offer precision, practicality and elegance. It combines the sophistication of mechanical watchmaking with the ultimate precision of quartz with no fewer than 250 components and 5 high-performance bi-directional engines capable of twice the torque of conventional timepiece engines. For the first time in several decades, TAG Heuer has created
a new generation of “hybrid” electromechanical movements in the purest avant-garde tradition of the brand, and giving rise to the most elegant chronograph architecture ever conceived in watchmaking. Inspired by automotive dashboard counters, the Calibre S features two retrograde counters placed at 4:30 and 7:30 to display information ranging from the perpetual calendar to 1/10th and 1/100th of a second.
This unique architecture enables the central hour, minute and second hands to be used for chronograph timing with a simple press on the crown. Reading of the chronograph time has been made intuitive and quick, and the dial simple and elegant without the three counters on traditional chronographs.

TAG Heuer–Avant-Garde
Despite the technical challenges, TAG Heuer never compromised on quality or performance for the Calibre S. Made of the lightest and most resilient materials available, the chronograph is subjected to 12,000 hours of rigorous testing ranging from simulated acceleration to exposure to extreme temperatures and
physical shocks. The result is the world’s easiest-to-read chronograph, offering the unparalleled accuracy of electro-mechanical technology and the sophistication and complexity of mechanical watchmaking. Equally important, it represents a complete rethink of the aesthetics and functionalities of chronograph design.
Superlatively elegant and contemporary, it is the standard bearer for a new generation of analog avant-garde timepieces. With Calibre S and Calibre 360, TAG Heuer is the only Swiss watchmaking company mastering the 1/100th of a second through two different in-house owned technologies.

In Chronograph mode, simple, additional and split timing functions are available in easy-to-read displays. Other iconic Link features include a solid-steel folding clasp with folding buckle, curved scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with doublesided anti-reflective treatment, specially treated glass to optimize readability, hand-applied curved and faceted index, and water-resistance to 200 meters.

AQUARACER CALIBRE S TAG Heuer’s longstanding involvement in diving and competitive sailing makes it the expert in high-performance, water-inspired timepieces, uniquely capable of transforming technically sophisticated timepieces into stylish musthaves. The Aquaracer Calibre S embodies this perfectly. Based on the famous Aquaracer series, first introduced in 1982, this prestigious new upgrade was developed and tested by China Team, a challenger for the America’s Cup 2007. Outfitted with the electro-mechanical Calibre S movement, it uses the same central hands to show actual and measured time. It also sports a countdown mode with an automatic Chronograph start, making it a professional instrument: press twice on the crown to enter the Countdown mode (Regatta), Chronograph mode will activate automatically by the end of the countdown, and finally the elapsed time of the race is displayed intuitively and elegantly on the blue or anthracite dial.

The 45mm case housing the exclusive TAG Heuer Calibre 17 movement integrates signature design features of the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition: the fine-brushed steel bezel coated with titanium carbide echoes the dream machine’s carbon front spoiler and forged aluminum wheels. The SLR’s brake calipers are suggested by the red-colored hands. The ergonomic bracelet evokes the lateral air intakes of the car, and the patented pushbuttons inclined at 45° recall its gear-change levers. A bi-directional turning flange driven by a second crown at 9 o’clock measures elapsed race time. A stunning watch, as high-tech and high-performance as the dream machine it celebrates.

20.9.2007 16:54:09 Uhr
SINCE 1860 1860-1892 From one world to another... IN 1860, AT THE AGE OF 20, EDOUARD HEUER FOUNDED A WATCHMAKER’S WORKSHOP IN SAINT-IMIER IN THE REMOTE JURA MOUNTAINS OF SWITZERLAND. IT WAS THE START OF AN EXTRAORDINARY WATCHMAKING STORY. 1.
THROWING AWAY THE KEY... Back then, all watches were wound with a key. In 1867, the year Edouard Heuer relocated his workshop to Bienne, he changed the course of watchmaking history forever with his first patented invention in 1869: a keyless, crown-operated winding system. A huge success at the Universal Exhibition in Vienna, this new generation of timepieces was soon among the most coveted in the world. When powerful American manufacturers moved aggressively into the European market, Edouard Heuer responded by pushing through innovations in every area of design, engineering
and manufacturing, thus helping to make the Swiss watchmaking industry the world leader that it remains till this day. ...AND BANKING ON THE FUTURE Sporting competition was expanding rapidly − on water, grass, cinder running tracks and roads. Measuring time accurately became increasingly important. Edouard Heuer was well aware of the opportunities and, in 1882, become one of the first to produce pocket chronographs in high volumes. In 1887, Edouard Heuer patented one of the most important innovations in watchmaking: the famous oscillating pinion,
used till this day by leading manufacturers in the production of mechanical chronographs. With this breakthrough invention, TAG Heuer became the reference standard in chronographs and timing instruments for high-level sports. In 1889, at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, the company received a silver medal for his pocket chronograph collection. By the time of his death in 1892, Heuer’s creative vision and passion for innovation had laid the foundation for a watchmaking dynasty − one that was to make an indelible mark on the next century of dramatic change.

JULES-EDOUARD AND CHARLES-AUGUSTE HEUER SUCCEEDED THEIR FATHER, WHOSE DARING AND INTUITION HAD ENABLED THE COMPANY TO DOMINATE HIGH-QUALITY SPORTS TIMING AND CHRONOGRAPHS. In 1911, the company introduced Time of Trip, the first dashboard chronograph. Eight years later, the Zeppelin ZR III relied on it for its epic 8,106 km trip over North America, and in 1929, Hugo Eckener had it on board for his round-the-world trip in the Graf Zeppelin. In 1916, Charles-Auguste Heuer launched the Micrograph, the first instruments to measure time to 1/100th of a second. This revolutionary invention, which set a new benchmark for highprecision timekeeping, was the basis for the pocket chronographs chosen as the official timing instruments of the Olympic Games in Antwerp (1920), Paris (1924) and Amsterdam (1928). Thousands of Micrographs were produced over the next six decades. The first alpine slalom and downhill ski races were timed by the company, starting in 1928. In 1933, Autavia (contraction of Automobile and Aviation), the first on-board stopwatch for cars and airplanes was launched. That same year saw the launch of the Hervue, a watch with a power reserve of 8 days. These two instruments were often mounted together on a chrome base and fixed
to the dashboard of a car. Heuer’s leading-edge chronographs soon began to be seen on the wrists of celebrity clients around the world, including Harry S Truman, General Eisenhower, Henry Ford, Prince William of Sweden, and King Bhumibol of Thailand. In 1948, the company introduced its Auto-Graph, a wrist chronograph for air pilots with a tachymetre and an easy-to-operate counter for measuring elapsed time and fuel consumption. From racing tracks to sea-lanes, innovation continues. In 1950, the company unveiled its patented Mareograph, a unique sailing chronograph derived from the earlier Solunar, which had allowed fishermen to know when fish were feeding. Called the Seafarer in the USA, the new chronograph was the first with a tide indicator and chronograph functions for sailing races. Skippers also welcomed the Seafarer’s 5-minute countdown function. This was followed by the Yacht-Timer, a fully water-resistant chronograph whose race-start functions were controlled by a single pushbutton.

CARRERA!
1950-60-70 Accelerating research and innovation In 1955, Heuer unveiled the Twin-Time, a GMT model that simultaneously displayed two time zones. In 1958, the company presented its famous on-board timer, the Rally Master, consisting of Master Time (8-day clock) and a Monte Carlo (12-hour stopwatch). The following year, Hubert Heuer and his nephew, Jack William Heuer (son of Charles-Edouard), set up Heuer Time Corporation, a new American subsidiary based in New York. One year later, Jack W. Heuer unveiled a prototype of the Slalom Timer at the Basel Watch Fair. It was the company’s first quartz chronograph accurate to 1/100th of a second. The electronic revolution had begun. In 1962, the company made history: the brand became the first Swiss watchmaker to send a timepiece into space: a TAG Heuer stopwatch, strapped to the wrist of John Glenn during NASA’s first manned space flight.
In 1963, Jack W. Heuer turned his creative focus to the world of the cinema, designing the Film Master, which measured film sequences in 16mm and 35mm. The following year, he returned his attention to his dominant sports passion of motor racing with the inaugural launch of the legendary Carrera. A tribute to professional motor racing’s most grueling road race, the legendary Carrera Panamericana Mexico of the 1950s, this stunning piece of unconventional watchmaking technology was worn by countless race drivers, and remains, in its latest incarnation, one of the most popular, timeless and iconic creations. In 1966, Jack W. Heuer stunned the watchmaking world yet again, this time by introducing the Microtimer, the world’s first miniaturized electronic timing instrument accurate to an extraordinary 1/1,000th of a second.
McQueen’s wrist in the 1970 racing film, Le Mans. In 1969, Jo Siffert, Steve McQueen’s friend and racing mentor, signed on as a brand ambassador, becoming the first racecar driver sponsored by a watch company. TIMING A LEGENDARY CAR In 1971, Enzo Ferrari asked Clay Regazzoni, Swiss winner of the Italian Grand Prix, to find timing instruments for his track at Fiorano. The brand’s technology was ideally suited to the task, as demonstrated by the Le Mans Centigraph, which measured time to 1/1,000th of a second. 3.

TAG Heuer–History
As Ferrari’s Official Timekeeper from 1971 to 1979, the brand played a key role in the team’s unprecedented string of world championship victories, and saw its name linked to such Ferrari legends as Gilles Villeneuve, Niki Lauda, and Jody Schekter. Meanwhile, in Bienne, the innovations and patents kept coming. In 1972, the Microsplit 800 was unveiled, the first pocket quartz stopwatch 99.999% accurate to 1/100th of a second. In 1975, Paul Newman started a fashion for the Chronosplit, the world’s first quartz wrist chronograph with a double digital display - LED and LCD and accurate to 1/100th of a second. Barely two years later, the company presented the world’s first digitalanalog chronograph, the Manhattan Chronosplit GMT, the forerunner of the Kirium Formula 1 chronograph.

THE LAUNCH OF THE 2000 SERIES IN 1982 EXEMPLIFIED THE PEERLESS SPORTS SPIRIT OF HEUER. THIS CONTEMPORARY SPORTS WATCH BECAME AN INDUSTRY BENCHMARK BECAUSE OF ITS ESSENTIAL 6 FEATURES: WATERRESISTANCE TO 200 METERS; UNIDIRECTIONAL TURNING BEZEL; LUMINESCENT HANDS AND INDEX; SCREW-IN CROWN WITH A DOUBLE GASKET TO ENSURE ITS WATER-RESISTANCE; DOUBLE-SAFETY CLASP; AND A SCRATCHRESISTANT SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL. In 1985, TAG Heuer teamed up with McLaren Mercedes, forming what would become one of the longest-running and most successful sponsorship partnerships in Formula One history, linking the TAG Heuer name to some of the team’s most famous drivers, including Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Gerhard Berger, Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard, Kimi Räikkönen, Juan Pablo Montoya, and this year’s stellar team of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. In 20 seasons, no fewer than 8 Formula One World Championships have been won by drivers wearing TAG Heuer chronographs. In 1986, TAG Heuer launched the first Formula 1 watch, uniquely combining racing steel and fibreglass in a sports chronograph design. The “S/el” (Sport and elegance) watch launched the following year immediately made its mark
in the world of watchmaking, thanks to its signature, double-S shaped bracelet. This favorite model of the legendary Ayrton Senna (who signed on as a TAG Heuer brand ambassador in 1988), the famous watch reinforced TAG Heuer’s position as the industry reference for sport, elegance and prestige. In 1989, TAG Heuer became Official Timekeeper for World Cup Alpine Skiing events in the United States and Canada. In 1991, it added the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and in 1992, the Formula One World Championship. TAG Heuer used the most advanced technologies to achieve a level of reliability that would be worthy of atomic clocks. The timing of Formula One races was controlled by a GPS satellite detection system ensuring precision to a millionth of a second. 105

In 1999, TAG Heuer introduced the Link series, a bold reworking of the hugely successful S/el design. Five fashion designers, inspired by the Link’s doubleS shaped link bracelet, created exclusive outfits for five sporting celebrities, specially photographed by Peter Lindbergh: Gianfranco Ferre for Marion Jones, Karl Lagerfeld for Leonardo, Thierry Mugler for Colin Jackson, Alexander McQueen for Boris Becker, and Narciso Rodriguez for Monica Seles. TAG HEUER AT THE HELM... The most widely covered sports event after the World Cup and the Olympic Games is the America’s Cup. First organized in 1851, the prestigious sailing race has changed rules and switched continents, but remains closely associated with adventure and cutting-edge technology. Often, it leads the way, and in this way, its history echoes TAG Heuer’s.

TAG Heuer was the Official Supplier of chronographs to the Intrepid team, which won the America’s Cup in 1967. In 1995, TAG Heuer was part of Chris Dickson’s challenge in the Louis Vuitton Cup, which reached the semi-finals. In 1984, Mike Birch in his Formula TAG, one of the very first kevlar and carbonfiber catamarans, broke the world record for the greatest distance sailed in 24 hours. TAG Heuer was also associated with Pierre Fehlmann (Maxi Yacht Cup) and Titouan Lamazou in the Jules Verne Trophy (Round the world in 80 days), followed by the Whitbread Trophy in 1997 with the Dennis Conner team. In 2002, TAG Heuer sponsored the Oracle BMW Racing team for the America’s Cup with Chris Dickson and Peter Holmberg. To commemorate the partnership, TAG Heuer offered sea racing fans a limited edition of the Link Searacer Oracle chronograph worn by team members.

2001-2003 Bringing the past to life TAG HEUER REINTRODUCED THE CLASSIC CARRERA IN 1996, THE MONACO IN 1998, AND THE MONZA IN 2000. IN 2003, IT WAS THE TURN OF THE AUTAVIA − WORN IN THE 60S BY THE SWISS FORMULA 1 DRIVER, JO SIFFERT. THESE WATCHES WERE REVISED AND MODERNIZED TO OFFER FUNCTIONS THAT MET CONTEMPORARY NEEDS, YET THEY REMAINED FAITHFUL TO THE SPIRIT OF THE ORIGINALS AND THE BRAND’S UNIQUE HERITAGE.
In 2001, the avant-garde Kirium F1 represented the future direction of sports watch design and a major technical achievement: a modern analog watch with digital chronograph functions and 1/100th-ofa-second precision. That same year, TAG Heuer became Official Timekeeper of the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships in St. Anton, Austria. Just as the “S/el”, renamed Link, introduced a new era in watchmaking, a revolution was shaking up the peaceful world of golf. His name? Tiger Woods, arguably the greatest golfer in history. A worldwide TAG Heuer brand ambassador since 2003, Tiger is like nobody else, yet his motto speaks to us all: “The most important thing in life is to make yourself do better.” TAG Heuer has followed this same philosophy for almost a century and a half. The Link Calibre 36 chronometer, designed by Jack W. Heuer and endorsed by Tiger Woods, is a superlative example of the brand’s ceaseless drive for perfection. In 2002, the Micrograph F1, a descendant of the legendary Micrograph of 1916, was awarded the Design Prize at the Geneva
Grand Prix d’Horlogerie. Combining the aesthetics of a prestigious watch with the functions of a high-performance professional timekeeping instrument, the Micrograph F1 features lap measuring at 1/100th of a second precision, and a high-end digital screen for maximum readability. That same year, the longawaited Sportvision line of optical and sun eyewear was launched, extending TAG Heuer’s sporting prestige into an entirely new domain. The Physics range of the eyewear series received a prestigious Red Dot Design Award. In 2002, the advertising commercial “What Are You Made Of?” communicated the brand’s daring personality and made a big impression internationally. It starred Tiger Woods, shown hitting a golf ball that flies around the Monaco Race circuit at the speed of a Formula 1 car. The design, talent and emotion of the commercial were reflected in two new models: the high-performance Aquagraph and the revolutionary Microtimer, the first wrist chronograph to measure 1/1,000th of a second. 107

edition TAG Heuer SLR for MercedesBenz, TAG Heuer worked with its longtime partners, McLaren and MercedesBenz, creating a chronograph exclusively available to owners of the super-charged SLR sports car.
2004-2007 The revolutionary years IN 2004, THE COMPANY TOOK ON A NEW MOTORACING CHALLENGE WHEN IT SIGNED ON AS OFFICIAL TIMEKEEPER OF THE INDY RACING LEAGUE (IRL) AND THE LEGENDARY INDY 500. NO OTHER RACING CIRCUIT REQUIRES SUCH PRECISION: 1/10,000TH OF A SECOND! ALSO IN 2004, TAG HEUER CREATED A SENSATION WITH THE REVOLUTIONARY MONACO V4 CONCEPT WATCH. INSPIRED BY THE BRAND’S MOTORACING HERITAGE (THE WATCH’S NAME COMES FROM THE RACING ENGINE-LIKE V-FORMATION OF THE MOVEMENT’S FOUR BARRELS), THE V4 USES BALL BEARINGS AND IS BELT-DRIVEN. A TOTALLY NEW TYPE OF WATCH MOVEMENT, IT IS CONSIDERED THE MOST ASTONISHING ADVANCEMENT IN MECHANICAL WATCHMAKING OF THE LAST DECADES, AND RECEIVED A RED DOT DESIGN AWARD IN 2005.
FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY... Another Concept Watch, the Monaco Sixty Nine, went into full production in 2004, just a year after being unveiled at Basel. The first reversible watch – one side sports the Monaco dial with its mechanical hand-wound movement, the other the digital dial of the Microtimer with its
1/1,000th of a second quartz chronograph movement, it won the coveted Best Design Prize at the Geneva Grand Prix d’Horlogerie. A brand new, ultraluxury Carrera was launched in 2004 to mark the iconic timepiece’s 40th anniversary. Larger, more harmoniously designed and water-resistant, the Carrera chronograph nevertheless remains faithful to the original concept. For the limited
skills and great technological prowess. Also launched in 2005 was of the first-ever Professional Golf Watch, developed with the rigorous participation of Tiger Woods. It would go on to win awarded a Chicago Athenaeum Good Design Award (2006) and a FENNIA Design Award (2007).
TAG HEUER: THE SPORT AND GLAMOUR SUPERSTAR
SAILING TOWARDS NEW ADVENTURES...
In 2005, TAG Heuer gave added depth and allure to its “Sport and Glamour” emphasis by signing tennis superstar Maria Sharapova, Hollywood legends Uma Thurman and Brad Pitt, and racing aces Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Räikkönen to the TAG Heuer dream team of brand ambassadors. Uma Thurman’s favorite timepiece, the haute-couture Diamond Fiction, was awarded the Ladies Watch Prize at the Geneva Grand Prix d’Horlogerie. Set with 1,000 diamonds, it demonstrates both advanced jewelry
TAG Heuer also introduced the Aquaracer Calibre S, the world’s easiest-to-read and easiest-to-use electro-mechanical chronograph. Unlike traditional sports chronographs, characterized by counters, the Calibre S displays its special Chronograph and Countdown Modes on the same central hour, minute, and second hands as well as on the two semi-circular counters. To commemorate the launch, TAG Heuer signed a long-term agreement with China Team, the People’s Republic of China first ever America’s Cup sailing team.

At Baselworld 2006, the most talked about timepiece was a new TAG Heuer Concept Watch, the superlative Monaco Calibre 360 LS (Linear Second), the first wrist chronograph with an automatic movement capable of measuring and displaying time to 1/100th of a second. Its balance oscillates at 360,000 vibrations per hour − 10 times faster than any other chronograph − making it the most precise chronograph ever produced. New versions of Carrera Tachymetre Racing and the TAG Heuer SLR for Mercedes-Benz were also added to the roster, as well as the new Monaco Vintage, which became the must-have watch for men and women! Another key event of the year was the launch of the new TAG Heuer advertising campaign. Asking “What are you made of?” the campaign strengthens the message by bringing elegance together with sport and glamour. Mental strength, the focal point of all TAG Heuer advertising, is the subject once again, here supported by the brand’s incredible roster of ambassadors: NASCAR great Jeff Gordon and Carrera Tachymetre Racing; Uma Thurman and Link Diamonds; Tiger Woods and the legendary Link series; Maria Sharapova and the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Glamour Diamonds; Brad Pitt and the Carrera Tachymetre; Chinese NBA basketball star Yao Ming and the Aquaracer; and Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan and the Carrera Tachymetre. TAG Heuer picked up a prestigious Red Dot
design Award for the Calibre 360 Concept Chronograph in 2006, which had moved from the concept to manufacturing stage. Produced in a limited edition, the model in rose gold won the Sports Watch prize at the Geneva Grand Prix de d’Horlogerie.

ICONIC DESIGN, ULTIMATE MOVEMENTS, TIMELESS LINK Baselworld 2007 was the stage for the 20th anniversary celebration of the TAG Heuer Link series – the ultimate combination of sport and elegance. To commemorate the event TAG Heuer unveiled “SKIN”, the most spectacularly avant-garde stand ever built for the prestigious watch fair. It also dazzled the watchmaking world with the Baselworld launch of a new generation of chronograph movements. The Link Calibre S combines the precision of quartz with the sophistication of mechanical functions. Other new launches included the Link Calibre 16 Automatic Chronograph Tachymetre, the Link Calibre 5 Day-Date, and the Link Calibre 5. TAG Heuer also named two exciting new brand ambassadors from Formula One: the McLaren Mercedes Vodafone drivers, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, who join fellow competitor Kimi Räikkönen, now the official driver for Scuderia Ferrari. Alonso, a two-time F1A World Champion, and his talented teammate Hamilton, the first rookie driver ever to lead the Formula One, are bringing their expertise to bear on the overhaul and redesign of the hugely popular TAG Heuer Formula 1 sportswatch, while Raïkkönen is testdriving TAG Heuer’s award-winning TAG Heuer Avant-Garde Eyewear line.

TAG Heuer Quality THE HIGH LEVEL OF TAG HEUER QUALITY STARTS WITH A RIGOROUS SELECTION OF OUR SUPPLIERS AND THEIR PRODUCTS AND CONTINUES WITH CAREFUL FOLLOW-UP. ALL THROUGH THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS, EACH COMPONENT IS SUBMITTED TO NUMEROUS TESTS AND CHECKS TO ENSURE THAT IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY PRODUCED. TAG HEUER HAS CREATED A LABORATORY TO DEVELOP ITS OWN QUALITY CRITERIA AND SPECIFICATIONS, APPLIED IN ADDITION TO THE REGULAR WATCHMAKING STANDARDS. THIS DEVELOPMENT ENABLED THE BRAND TO OBTAIN THE SWISS PATENT NO, CH 695 197 A5 FROM THE FEDERAL INSTITUTE OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. THIS GIVES OFFICIAL STATUS TO ALL THE EQUIPMENT IN THE TAG HEUER LABORATORY (IN LA CHAUX-DE-FONDS, SWITZERLAND) AND TO ALL THE TESTS THAT IT CARRIES OUT. THE FEDERAL INSTITUTE OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IS THE OFFICE RESPONSIBLE FOR PATENTS, BRANDS, DESIGNS AND CREATOR’S RIGHTS. IT ALSO PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN PROTECTING INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AT THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL. BY AWARDING TAG HEUER AN OFFICIAL PATENT FOR A WATCH QUALITY-TESTING PROCEDURE, THE OFFICE HAS RECOGNIZED THE BRAND’S WATCHMAKING EXPERTISE. THIS PRESTIGIOUS CERTIFICATE DOES NOT SIMPLY APPROVE THE EXCELLENCE OF THE PROCESS AND TOOLS INVOLVED AND TAG HEUER’S EXPERTISE IN THE AREA OF QUALIFICATION, IT MAKES THEM OFFICIAL AND GIVES THEM PROTECTION. IT COVERS THE TESTS OF CHEMICAL AND MECHANICAL RESISTANCE AS WELL AS THE SIMULATIONS OF SPORTING ACTIVITY SUCH AS GOLF, CAR RACING AND SAILING. IT IS A VALUABLE ELEMENT IN ENABLING THE BRAND TO OFFER PRODUCTS OF TRULY SUPERIOR QUALITY. 110

A sports watch, and indeed any contemporary watch, must be water-resistant to protect the mechanical or quartz movement inside, and ensure watch functions. Water-resistance helps to reduce the need for servicing by extending the life of the movement. TAG Heuer carries out real water-resistance tests on 100% of its production, in water under pressure. Each watch is individually checked after testing. When the watches are pre-heated and a drop of cold water is placed on the glass, no condensation must appear. TAG Heuer also produces professional diving watches such as the Aquagraph chronograph. This particular model must meet all the specifications of the Diving Watch NIHS 92-11 standard, and must then successfully pass the pushbutton function test. To manufacture these buttons, which are waterproof and operational down to 500 meters, special test equipment had to be designed and made for TAG Heuer.
2. RESISTANCE TO U. V. AGEING. Heat and light often have an adverse effect on plastic materials, coatings (varnishes), and leather. The aesthetic and physical properties of certain components in TAG Heuer watches can be affected by these invisible agents. To avoid this, the quality laboratory carries
out stringent tests on the materials used to ensure their long-term stability. Parts remain in a closed receptacle for three days and are exposed to light of equivalent intensity to the full summer sun on the Mediterranean coast. In order to be certified suitable, they must not show the slightest effect. These tests enable TAG Heuer to guarantee using only high viability materials so that its watches can accompany their owners in all latitudes and in all seasons.
TAG Heuer–Quality
1. WATER-RESISTANCE
1.
3. RESISTANCE TO EXTREME TEMPERATURES If a watch is exposed to the sun for long periods, its case can reach a temperature of more than 40°C. In winter, when skiing, it can experience negative temperatures. To ensure that the watch continues to operate perfectly in temperatures ranging from –0°C to +50°C, TAG Heuer tests individual components and complete watches in a heated vessel. This makes it possible to verify the running and continued accuracy of timepieces used in extreme sports such as parachuting, climbing or expeditions in the tropics. To ensure that its watches are completely flawless, TAG Heuer also conducts a test that reproduces tropical environments. To get close to real conditions, fitted parts spend 14 days in a closed container with air maintained at +40 °C and 90 % relative humidity. No trace of corrosion nor any significant time variation must be noticeable after this ordeal.
4. RESISTANCE TO THE EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT 4.
A watch being worn is a watch that is alive. On the wrist it is forced to come into contact with corrosive agents that could affect the watch or its attractiveness. The chlorine in pools, the sulfur in the air of polluted cities, not to mention perspiration or sea water can, on their own or in conjunction, attack the materials in a watch or reduce the mobility of some of its components. To prevent this, TAG Heuer carries out a number of tests on watch cases, crowns, metal bracelets, leather and rubber straps in order to verify the neutrality of the materials that come into contact with the skin. Only those that meet these strict requirements are accepted. 111
8618_TH_CAT_102-113_GB.indd 111
20.9.2007 14:30:05 Uhr
5. TRACTION RESISTANCE Over time, putting on and taking off a watch has an effect on the buckle of a leather strap or the clasp of a metal bracelet. When a watch accidentally snags on an exterior element, traction is applied to the strap or bracelet that can seriously damage its attachment pins. To avoid this, TAG Heuer carries out a series of tests that submit the clasps and tongue buckles to a traction of 15-20 kg for 5000 cycles. These items are then sub-
5.
jected to torsion under tension. No part of the strap or bracelet must show any deformation or tearing if it is to be used in the manufacture of TAG Heuer watches.
6.
6. VIBRATION RESISTANCE In many sports, such as mountain biking, Formula 1 or karting, wrists are subjected to very substantial vibration. And in every day life, on a motorbike for example, the wrists and therefore the watch are regularly subjected to brief repetitive movements. To confirm that this does not have any effect on the accuracy of the watch, its reliability or integrity, TAG Heuer has developed a machine able to reproduce a higher level of vibration than timepieces are likely to experience on the wrist of a top-level sportsman. The intensity of vibration is far greater than a human being can withstand and enables the technical solutions to be tested to the extreme. This random-movement test must not alter the working of the timepiece or components, such as the strap or the screws, or reveal any sign of weakness. 7.
when skiing and... it’s an impact, quick, hard, unstoppable. TAG Heuer carries out shock test in the laboratory on all its watches using a specially calibrated instrument. Every watch that leaves the workshop has been designed to resist a fall of one meter onto a surface as hard as an oak parquet floor. Because this is a very common type of accident, the test is carried out twice: first with the watch flat, the glass hitting the floor, and a second time with the watch set on its side, crown uppermost. Of course, the movement must continue to operate as before and the case must show no trace of damage.
7.
RESISTANCE TO DROPPING
It is rare for a watch never to be dropped. All it takes is a slip of the fingers when winding, or a moment’s inattention. Taking care is not enough to prevent any accidents in the life of a watch. When playing a sport, a fall on hard snow 112

20.9.2007 14:30:13 Uhr
turning bezel, the crown and the pushbuttons undergo 5,000 function cycles, which equates to several years of use in normal conditions. The machine used to simulate the ageing process concerning pushbutton functions is shown above. 10. ABRASION RESISTANCE TAG Heuer studies the behavior of its watches down to the smallest details. They are technical instruments, worn in all situations and ready to accompany their owners through all the adventures of life. To test its models over a long period, TAG Heuer conducts abrasion tests on cases and bracelets. This calibrated wear, called “Polyservice”, enables the treatment of a watch or metal bracelet to be modified, if necessary, to make it less prone to ageing.
INTERNATIONAL GUARANTEE TAG Heuer watches are at the cutting edge of technology which the company backs with an international warranty against any defect in operation or manufacture for a period of two years. They have all been individually proven in more than 60 tests, and are further subjected to numerous quality controls during production. In addition, TAG Heuer regularly conducts tests on individual components produced by suppliers. The aim is to achieve flawless quality at all stages of production. The identification number engraved on the back of every watch case is vital and must be kept intact. It is confirmation that the finished watch fully complies with TAG Heuer’s quality criteria and is the essential reference required to benefit from the international warranty.

11. ANALYSIS OF METALS AND METAL COATINGS 8. IMPACT RESISTANCE In normal life nobody is totally static. Even worse, when you play a game it is easy to forget that you are wearing a watch at all. A sudden movement and the watch can hit a wall, as in squash, or be hit by a hard fast-moving object such as a baseball. To ensure that a watch that the owner normally looks after carefully, does not suffer from such an event, TAG Heuer carries out severe impact tests with machines
specially designed to check that the components can withstand the shock waves associated with heavy impacts. After testing, the watch must not show any mechanical damage. 9. RESISTANCE TO AGEING All the functions of a watch are submitted for ageing tests that faithfully reproduce not only the normal hand actions of the wearer but also accidental incidents. The
The alloys or decorative coatings in precious metals are systematically controlled. Fluorescent X analyzes the precious element content (carats) and checks the thickness of the coatings. These tests are carried out at random but are also combined to obtain a better insight into the real conditions that a watch experiences. For example, imagine an athlete who takes a bath after a mountain-bike race. These tests simulate the shocks and sweat and check the water-resistance. 113
