WORD FROM CHIEF TEAM BUILDER Hello Everyone, It is with great pleasure that we share our first hellosmile querterly Journal with you. If you are reading this journal, you have most likely been part of our journey - in one way or another. As a team member, doctor, mentor, teacher or fellow community stakeholder/leader - you have taken us to where we are today. The Goal of this journal is to keep you updated on our various projects and initiatives. How The Journals Are Structured: The Journals will focus on three core areas that we have thus far identified to be the pillars of success for our mission:

01

1) Our team of healthcare workers: we see a future in Pediatric Health and Wellness where we train and develop ordinary community members to be empowered health and happiness coaches, diabetes managers, obesity prevention experts, and changemakers for their communities. 2) The sanctity of our patient and member experience: we are embracing a future where we can engage parents and children by having a different type of conversation. An exchange that would enable us to design and utilize tools, and provide for resources that better respond to the unique health and wellness needs of children, families and their communities. 3) An informed, involved and connected community: we are working towards a future where we are connecting our amazing community activists, doctors, nurses, school teachers, day care providers, and all of the people that have a vested interest in the health and wellness of the children in the community. .......................... Finally as you read the journal you will probably notice some sentences that aren’t best examples of English grammar. I am not a professional writer and in many cases I choose to write things as I would say them in conversation. I know this will make my English teachers cringe but I think it makes way for much better conversation. ‘till next quarter, /Farhad

WORD FROM CHIEF KIDS DENTIST It has been an exciting summer! Thanks to every hellosmile team member we are continuing to deliver on our promise of providing the best care possible to every child we are privileged to serve. In the months to come we will be working on new training sessions. A team member’s level of knowledge and training is a key ingredient to his or her recipe for providing an engaging experience for our patients/members and their families. Providing these positive experiences help encourage children and families to be more active participants in not only their oral health but their overall health. A child’s smile is among the most precious and magical gifts he or she shares with others. Together we are the hellosmile team. Our mission is to focus on one child and family at a time to help celebrate and preserve this special gift. Our success can have reaching effects well beyond a healthy smile, giving children and families the tools and confidence to be more actively involved in their overall health and wellness. Thanks again for helping us carry out the hellosmile mission by playing your vital role in our team. /Ali

WORD FROM CHIEF COMMUNITY BUILDER We have been blessed with a few beautiful days in the middle of summer and it just calls for celebration. I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your hard work and determination to deliver quality care to our patients and to grow as individual team members, as an organization and really an extended family. In these difficult economic times we are grateful to have an opportunity to not only have a meaningful job that allows every team member to continually grow personally and professionally. I have been working on our numbers to create win win partnerships and solutions for all of our stakeholders. We are creating opportunities to provide pediatric dental & oral health services for and with the help of our community. This is a true blessing which we should all acknowledge and celebrate. We are one big family caring for many families in the communities we serve. Love, Nazanin

04

CORE VALUES SURVEY In the beginning of the summer we asked every staff member to go through a list of values and principles, and select those that best reflected their own personal, as well as, professional beliefs. This exercise attempted to expose the core values of the organization, which will function as guiding principles for the organization. These guiding principles will be at the core of everything we do as an organization, as they will set the basic ‘standards’ for how we communicate with children and their parents, how we see our role as health care workers and the purpose of our organization in the communities we serve. These basic standards will also play a major role in guiding the visual way we communicate, such as the colors we use in the hellosmile’s brand identity. Even though the visual way we communicate is only the surface of our patients experience with the organization, it is part of creating a positive first impression an impression that connects with the values we hold collectively. The three most selected values and principles were: + HEALTH AND HAPPINESS + FAMILY AND RELATIONSHIPS + TRUST AND FAITH

COLORS Based on the 'core values survey' our design team worked to define colors that would stand out as not only playful, fun and casual but also as strong communicating and full of intention. We have linked these three colors to the three pillars of success at hellosmile. We believe these are the pillars on which we are aspiring to build a new foundation in pediatric care with our health and happiness model.

ENGAGING PARENTS AND CHILDREN Among the many opportunities to make a positive impression on parents and children, the forms that patients are required to fill out are one touch point to make a connection. As most of these forms are of a fairly low standard, one of the first challenges for the design team was to recreate how these forms are read, perceived and filled out. The industry standard for these type of forms: 1. Difficult to read/fill out 2. Boring (poor graphics) 3. Not interactive

CONNECTING COMMUNITIES Over the past 2 1/2 years we have met some amazing individuals who are working hard everyday to provide better health and wellness to the children in our communities. Through our collaboration with Head Start centers, day cares, churches, and various other community agencies we established our outreach initiative which is focused on communicating issues and services around health and happiness.

HELLOSMILE PEDIATRIC CENTERS Over the last several months we have stepped up our efforts toward expanding our services and partnerships. The hellosmile concept began with a vision to bring integrated children’s health and wellness service models to the communities that need them most. We have been privileged to be working shoulder to shoulder with community leaders and innovators that share this vision. Our Woodside home office began with a partnership with Dr. Eric Litchenstein's PedaitricEyeMD which has now grown into a network of affiliated clinics. The Sunnyside orthodontic clinic with Dr. Pourang Jahanshahi, PJ, is now fully operational. We have started integrative dental/medical operations at our two new locations with Dr. Emilio Villegas’ Sherman Pediatrics in Sunnyside, Queens and Dr. Hector Florimon’s Jerome Pediatrics in the Bronx. Dr. Ali led the completion of the new state of the art free Adolescent Dental Clinic in Spanish Harlem with close collaboration with Dr. Angela Diaz’ team of the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center. The Center is due to open in late August. We will be expanding our collaboration with Dr. Florimon in Corona Queens at National Pediatrics in September. We have also begun construction on our Park Slope (Brooklyn) location; this will be our first clinic where we’ll be implementing our one for one social health care experiment! ... more on that in the next journal .

HELLOSMILE TEAM Our team has grown from three people in July of 2007 to over 45 committed individuals today. We have witnessed amazing transformations in the lives of our team members. We have had team members finish their GED's, enroll in college, become certified assistants, re-connect with loved ones, find spirituality and commit to a future that aligns their actions with their values. Over the course of this month the clinical team, design team and doctors will work together to create a three-day cultural orientation which will cover and discuss + personal values + personal self assessment + introduction to science of happiness + ‘What you are going to do’ vs. ‘who you are going to be’ + hellosmile technology + organization + history + culture From this orientation we will formalize our daily pre-shift meetings in which the actions, events, issues, and most importantly hellosmile philosophy will be discussed. This way, everyone will understand their role in shaping the future of the organization.

HELLOSMILE I.T. TEAM Hello World. we are I.T. I don’t know about Mir, but I, Ardy, am your stereotypical geek. I am shy, wear glasses and spend more time with computers than people. I hang out in basements and wiring cabinets, but usually just behind a computer screen in a dark room sometimes through the wee hours of the morning. Due to our natural habitats, geeks are seldom seen, and hence we haven’t had an opportunity to bring everybody up to date on our struggles and accomplishments in bringing innovation and technology to the company. /Ardy Hello, my name is Mir. I believe in using technology to empower and connect people because we understand that our mission will help achieve a greater cause. After all, at the end of the day, everything is about putting a smile on people we care, respect, and love. /Mir I.T. UPDATE: We have been keeping very busy devising strategies for setting up our new locations and implementing and testing these said strategies, all while providing support for our current locations. Just to name a few of our accomplishments we have settled on and implemented Terminal Services over a Virtual Private Network to connect our growing network; We installed an IP-PBX and configured it with a VoiP trunk, and most recently we cloned the basics of our Woodside Database to serve as a template for our future projects. Updates on our progress can be found on the KDV blog, intranet, or our new tech blog at http://geekDental.com.

WORD FROM DESIGN TEAM The world of art and design is changing. People in creative industries are starting to dedicate their skills and talent to a world beyond the game of profit and fame. Designers and artists are exploring the potential of their skills and talent at work for something greater than typical projects for typical clients. Since the launch of the art+design collective, we have been teaming up with a wide range of likeminded artists and designers who all share an excitement to join our mission. We believe that innovation emerges when the insight and experience of many different people gather and put their minds to inspire a design. In other words, organization-wide collaborative workshops will be scheduled on a regular basis. The benchmark for every project is to reinvent the clinical ‘hike’ into a relationship-building experience that people love! Cheers, Rikard
