Margaret Keane was born in 1927 in Tennessee, US. Her name was Peggy Doris Hawkins.


She went to some Art schools before having her daughter. She was famous in her church for painting big-eyed angels.


In 1950’s she moved to San Francisco with her daughter.


In San Francisco she met Walter Keane in an Art market and married him in Hawaii. He said he was an artist too.

He started selling Margaret’s Art, but he said he was the painter. Margaret signed as Keane, which is her married last name.


He made posters, plates, cups‌ with Margaret’s Art. Her BIG EYES paintings become very popular.


He made her work long hours to produce lots of paintings. She couldn’t tell anyone their secret, he didn’t let her be alone with anyone. She was very scared, so she just kept painting for him.


One day, she was very scared and ran away of Walter with her daughter. They moved to Hawaii. She kept painting in there.


One day, she was very brave and told her secret on a radio programme. People didn’t believe her, so there was a trial. The judge made Margaret and Walter paint. Walter couldn’t paint anything, so Margaret won the trial and everybody learned the truth.
