ABOUT

Brookside

Brookside is a historic neighborhood community located on the near eastside of Indianapolis. Since the end of WWII, near eastsiders have faced issues of generational poverty, increased crime, housing deterioration, and underperforming schools. Despite these difficulties, Brookside is an incredibly vibrant and diverse community. Our neighbors take pride in their work and in providing for their families. They are quick to lend a helping hand and are fierce advocates for those they love. What our Brookside neighbors lack in resources, they make up for in grit and compassion.

We are working towards renewal one life at a time. Brookside CDC was created by Brookside Community Church to serve as its non-profit outreach arm. By creating a separate non-profit that is governed by the church, we are able to leverage our assets to combat the effects of poverty that residents in our community face. Each initiative of the CDC was created to meet the unique needs of our neighbors. If Brookside Community Church is the heartbeat, then Brookside CDC is the hands and feet. Together we are better able to be the church that Christ called us to be as we love and serve our neighbors.

Brookside Community Church and Brookside CDC exist to bring light and hope into the dark areas of our community. By placing a value on personhood over production, we are creating change in the areas of reentry , youth development , and housing .

Mission

BROOKSIDE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION EXISTS TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES OF RENEWAL AND TRANSFORMATION IN THE LIVES OF PEOPLE RESIDING IN THE BROOKSIDE NEIGHBORHOOD.

WHAT WE’RE DOING in the Brookside neighborhood REENTRY Brookside Community Reentry fosters relationships with those reentering society from incarceration, addiction, and homelessness. We are working to see participants built up and established for God’s glory.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Brookside Community Play serves children, teenagers, and families in our community. Our after school and summertime programs help kids overcome trauma through the power of play and help teens reach their full potential through academic development and employment opportunities.

HOUSING Brookside Community Housing provides safe and stable housing opportunities for families and individuals that are actively involved in Brookside Community Church or Brookside CDC programs.

REENTRY WE BEGIN BY SEEING EACH PERSON AS AN INDIVIDUAL, NOT AS A STATISTIC.

As we learn each person’s story, we are able to look past the labels. Treating others with dignity, we are able to disciple men and women through their reentry journey. Brookside Community Reentry was created by Brookside Community Church out of a need to serve the high number of individuals that reenter our community from incarceration, addiction, and homelessness each year. We do this through our Isaiah House, a 12-15 month residential discipleship program; The Bridge worship service, a weekly service that offers community and support for individuals throughout their reentry journey; and our Reentry Hub, where individuals can access services that help them on their journey and prevent recidivism.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PLAY GIVES KIDS HOPE! Brookside Community Play is a youth development program for children, teens, and families in our community. Brookside Community Play was created to help children and youth in our community overcome the effects of trauma and develop into the person that God has created them to be. Research shows that children and teens who come from a high-poverty environment experience trauma at higher rates than their peers. This trauma often results in behavior issues and poor academic performances. What began as an elementary after school program has expanded to support students and families from 1st – 12th grade. We seek to undo the impacts of trauma through the power of play, academic support, and family transformation.

HOUSING WE DESIRE TO SEE EACH FAMILY MEMBER AND INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE THE RENEWAL AND TRANSFORMATION THAT COMES FROM WALKING LIFE OUT IN A CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY. Brookside Community Housing provides safe and stable housing opportunities for families and individuals that are actively involved in Brookside Community Church or Brookside CDC programs. Brookside Community Housing exists to provide dignity, stability, and accountability to both individuals and families that struggle with inconsistent and unreliable housing. Participants experience peace and connection through the relationships that come with being a part of the Brookside family. Our housing program helps families and individuals establish new roots that are critical to overcoming the cycle of generational poverty that plagues our neighborhood.
