the story Macau is an intriguing manifestation of the melding of the East and the West. As a Portuguese-administered outpost in China for over 440 years, it has accumulated layer upon layers of historically rich cultural interchange, becoming a gateway into the Far East for European merchants and traders. As Portuguese rule led to the development of picturesque, maze-like streets and alleys, vibrant piazzas, and breathtaking architecture in Macau, it also molded a delicate identity and lifestyle unique only to its residents. However, evolving values of urban heritage and shifting priorities following a change in administration led to an unprecedented social and urban transformation.

Elevations part 1 IMAGERY The Macau Museum of Urban Planning harmonizes the multiple identities of Macau by creating a hybrid image - the old and the new, the classical and the modern, the East and the West.

Elevations part 2 layers The upper portion of the museum reflects the history of the city and culture through the use of patterned screens with traditional Chinese motifs and a curved laminated timber roof above the terrace. The mid-to-lower portion emphasizes the more current direction of the city through the use of modern materials such as custom zinc metal panels that reflect the map of the city, LED lighting technology and a double-skin spider clamp curtainwall system. The gridded metal panels are particuarly articulated to reflect the Portuguese mosaics found through the city of Macau. BMW

Welcome to the museum of urban plan As the public enter the museum, they will be engulfed by a naturally-lit wood-cladded atrium, a focal point throughout their museum experience. Through the use of advanced imaging technology, users will be able to view holograms and various visuals projected on the polished concrete floors in the lobby as they move up the building by looking through carefully placed punctures in the atrium. The canted ceiling guides users towards the butterfly stairs that will lead them to the first and most important exhibition space the Macau Panoramic Exhibition Hall.
16
The Macau Panoramic Exhibition Hall An integral exhibit in the museum, the panoramic model serves as a foundation in learning about the growth of the city since its birth. Constantly changing as the city expands its parameters, the model allows users to analyze, discuss and visualize the future of the city. Users navigate to the next level of the museum by following a ramp system that wraps around the panoramic model. Various platforms at differents levels allow users to view the model from different angles of the room.

Reflective of the meandering streets in the Old City of Macau, the Museum of Urban Planning is organized like city blocks. Through careful positioning of partitions, users navigate the museum in a relatively straightfoward manner, exploring a series of exhibitions that will educate them about Macau’s rich urban heritage from its birth to the present and to the future. Two major spaces - the lobby and the panoramic model exhibition space - create a level of spatial complexity that not only binds the exhibitions and orients the users, it ultimately serves as a reminder of the true purpose of the museum.

Located in a vibrant urban community, the Diva is an unconventional yet classy approach to the architectural composition of sound. It parallels the energy of the neighborhood and it celebrates sound as a medicine for the human spirit. More than just a sound box, the Diva provides an elegant space for art and culture to flourish. The facility includes a cafÊ infused within the lobby that is anchored by a glamorous grand staircase, as well as a bar and a rented event space on the upper levels. The façade demonstrates a clear division of spaces with the performance space defined by a prominent copper material that floats above the glass-covered support spaces.

CONVENTIONAL INSTITUTION MEETS UNCONVENTIONAL PLACE The College of Mount Saint Vincent is situated on a 70 acre campus of forested hills that overlook the magnificent Hudson River and the Palisades. Rich in natural landscapes and history, the campus should be a place that is architecturally engaging and inspiring. Yet what the campus has is only “typical of any institution.

The proposal seeks to revitalize the sense of place and community by addressing the three faces of the campus: NATURE // Forests & Hills HISTORY // Sisters of Charity ACADEMIA // Students & Faculty Campus life is mundane. It is incomparable to the vivacious winter whites, summer greens, spring blues and autumn reds. There is a clear division between the academic end of the campus facing the Hudson River on the West and the peaceful Grotto Park where the Sisters of Charity are situated on the East. The challenge is to unify the campus by creating place that fosters social and academic growth.

ARCHITE ctural method ology UNDERSTANDING ABSTRACT FORMS AND ELEMENTS THAT WILL ENABLE ONE TO BUILD AN ARCHITECTURAL SET OF RELATIONships
01 ARTISAN CULTURe montage Every node in Greenpoint has a story. By the waterfront, the presence of old warehouses reveal a history of commercial success and prominence. Today, only remnants of its past remain. The neighborhood is becoming evermore dynamic as its population diversifies. Once a charming neighborhood dotted with small mom-and-pop shops, Greenpoint is becoming a haven for urban artists seeking to change the perception of art and living. What we perceive is a mundane industrial and commercial neighborhood with many antiques and oddities. What we experience is a vivacious urban culture with jazzy sounds and a rough texture. It is the “Hipster Culture”; the Urban Culture; the Avante-Garde Culture. It is not change but rebirth - to reinvigorate the “found object” through art and self-expression.
02 Rear Window architectural analysis A compelling moment in the film “Rear Window” by Alfred Hitchcock is analyzed as a relationship between the spectator and the spectacle. The moment is then translated into architectural language in which the idea of tension and relaxation is expressed diagrammatically and physically. The screen becomes a metaphorical threshold that plays three major roles: as a physical representation of the cutting action of the camera, as a curtatin that controls the user’s perception and overall experience through the space and as a moment of separation (a turning point) through time and space.

03 The HOMELESS NOOK A study of light, space and emotions. The Homeless Nook studies the forms of the human body and how a spatial environment adheres to it. The nook is constructed from strips of cardboard, an identity that many make-shift shelters in the street assume. The nook is designed to assume the body form of the sitting, laying and sleeping positions, thus giving it an ergonomic character.
CURATING A R C H I TECTURE Architecture with social & Cultural value and impact. a comprehensive practice that explores relationships between society, its users and architecture.
01 STRANDS voids reimagined To examine existing voids within a space and determine whether our implemented parabolic geometries will enhance the established architecture or move against it for purposes outside of sculpture. The forms will not only create an interesting set of shifting planes but it will also create new forms that reinforce the geometry of a normally transient space. Aside from a more artistic aesthetic in order to curate the Spitzer School of Architecture’s atrium space, elements such as columns are utilized to create focal points and thus, a more interactive guide exploring the atrium.
02 FIREFLIES To enhance the experience of the handicap ramp that wraps the corner of the Spitzer School of Architecture. Lacking invitation to the building, the solar-powered lighting project revitalizes the space by creating a lit trail that mimics fireflies in jars in a natural setting. the ambience envisioned is that of a forest trail at night lit by sparkling fireflies; the feeling is warm, quiet & nostalgic. THE TEAM // Melisa Cardona, Kevin Seung Min Lee, Wilson Serrano, William Tran & Susan Wu
03 THE VERTEBRAE CHAIR The chair is an exploration of the body, form and function. The challenge is to design and build a piece that improves a basic human need; a chair that conforms to the human body and withstands the elements of nature.
