New Year 's Resolutions Are A Common Tradition
New Year 's Resolutions are a common tradition ritualizing the end of one year and beginning of the next. I once worked in an athletic club and the swell of people from Jan. 2 until about mid February was expected. Regulars prior to the New Year grumbled, but expected it. Staff was temporarily beefed up, happy to be more able to pay Christmas bills. The effect – on everyone – was temporary. Very few of the new faces we met Jan. 2 were seen on the treadmill a mere 6 weeks later. This year, I was asked to prepare a class aboutNew Year's Resolutions and Christianity. I found very little tying the tradition of New Year 's Resolutions to the practice or faith in being a Christian. One strong connection involved John Edwards (1703 – 1758), a respected theologian who served as President of Princeton University. He was known, in part for tremendous rigor and discipline in improving his life, his thinking and his relationship to God. His resolutions, which he reviewed regularly, can be found here: http://www.biblebb.com/files/edwards/resolutions.htm. In preparation for class, I pondered the reasons we fail so frequently on our resolutions. Trying to link Christianity with New Year 's Resolutions, I wondered how often we turned to God in trying to sustain the changes. New Year 's Resolutions are often a "pull yourself up by your bootstrap" intention. We expect to make often radical changes in our perspective and routine. We expect to do this on our own power. The characteristics

Sin City has plenty to offer for the night of December 31st. Nearly every club in Las Vegas will be hosting it 's own form of entertainment for the night but one place that is sure to draw a crowd is The Bellagio 's "The Bank." A table for the night at this high–profile club cost 's around $5,000.00, without tips. Expect to see some of the city 's highest rollers and local celebrity meat at this club. Las Vegas also is host to an amazingfireworks show that can be seen from the "Strip." There may not be a more exciting place to ring in the new year as Las Vegas. And remember, as the saying goes "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." Japanese New Year
Introduction:
In Japan one of the most celebrated festivals is New Years. The Japanese New Year, or Oshogatsu (‚¨³ŒŽ), is given more preparation than any other festival. There are many traditions and activities that happen at this time. Oshogatsu is a time to visit temples, forget the troubles of the past year, and wish for good fortune in the new. Manyfestivals around this time also reflect the values and ideals of New Years.
History:
During the time of the Empress Suiko (593–628), Japan was influenced greatly by the religion and beliefs of China. In A.D. 604 Japan officially adopted the Chinese calendar. gThe new calendar was a lunar– solar one that has its months based on the lunar cycle....show more content... Oshogatsu has many important religious aspects. On Jan. 1 at 12:00 a.m., temple bells will ring 108 times. The number 108 comes from a Buddhist idea that man has 108 cares. It is believed that at the end of the bells the evil spirits will be forced away for the upcoming year. Oshogatsu means gstandard monthh, this means that the rest of the year will be based on how the first month goes. Casal mentions new years also as Gansan, gthe three beginningsh, of a new day, a new month and a new year. (1). On the first day of the New Year everything will be clean. This means that much time is spent before this day to have the house clean. This is a Shinto belief that the inside should always be clean while leaving dirt and contamination outside. This goes for the home as well as the body.
During the day most Japanese people will go to visit their local temples. Around Tokyo and Kyoto this means that many people will gather together at the temples. ‚Tyen coins are thrown in a certain spot at the temple. In Japanese 5 yen (ŒÜ‰~) is read, ggoenh if you read the kanji for fortune or good luck, it is also ggoenh(‚²‰). So people throw ggoenh coins so that they will have luck in the New Year. Once at the temple you will also collect an omikuji, or a type of oracle. This will tell you that you will have good luck. If you happen to receive an unlucky omikuji, then

31st Dec 2013 08:30PM It was 08:30pm and I was sitting in my office, enjoying the last day of this year. I was happy, my friends,my colleagues, my seniors everyone was happy because we were about to leave for the biggest party of the year. Every year our company organizes this biggest party and in this party they announces the best employee of the year. I was also in the list of nominees of the best employee and some of my seniors told me that in this year I will get this award. I was very very excited. But there was a little problem. My love my angel my sweetheart my wife pari, she was waiting for me at home. She was thinking that I will come home today and we both will celebrate new year together because last year I did the same thing, I was in party and she was alone at home and when I called her to wish her happy new year, she didn't respond to me and was angry too. So this time I had already set some plans to celebrate new year with my love. But when my seniors told me that I am in nominees list and my chances of getting this award is high, I was like oh no, this time again my sweetheart will be alone at home. One main habit I would like to change this year is procrastination. I tend to push off assignments until the last minute because I assume they're easier than the brief explanation given during class. I plan to change that by doing the assignments the day they're given in order to aim for a better grade and have more time to complete them. My second habit is I'm very disorganized and tend to lose things easily. I tend to place my work in the wrong places, like in my textbook, folded up in my agenda, or in between my notebooks. In order to improve my organization skills, after class I will place my given assignments or handouts in their proper place. Not only will my assignments and work be organized but so will my brain. Another habit I would

What Would You Like To Change This Year?
Chinese New Year is the most widely celebrated tradition in Asia. The tradition is usually celebrated on the first day of the first month on the Chinese Lunar calendar. This tradition is rooted in centuries–old customs and is one of the most popular public holidays in China. Apart from China, this tradition is also celebrated in many Asian countries like Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan. There are many values and rituals tied with this tradition. For example, people would wear red clothing, decorate the house with red paper, and give children "lucky money" in red envelopes. According to legend, it is said that red can drive away bad luck, which is why the color red is highly emphasized. In myths, our ancestors would...show more content...
According a popular myth, the origin of this day lies in the fight against Nian, a beast in Chinese mythology. The beast would visit cities and eat cattle, crops, and even people. In order for families to protect themselves from the beast, they would place food at their doorsteps so that the beast would not harm them. One day during a family dinner, the family noticed how the beast was startled by seeing the color red. Word of this spread to other friends and family. Soon, from then on, on the first day of every New Year, people would hang red paper lanterns and other red objects to scare off the beast. They would also light bamboo stalks in order to scare the beast away. After some time, the beast stop coming to the city all together. However, by this time relatives and family had already adopted the habit of getting together to protect each other from the beast.
Looking back at ancient civilization, fireworks, elaborate performances, or decorations had not been invented or developed. These rituals that are associated with the tradition today were added throughout the years. It was because of time that people started incorporating ideas that were added on along with the festival. Hypnosis New Years Resolution
Use Hypnosis for Your New Years Resolutions With New Year's Day just around the corner, it is time to set out your goals for the upcoming year. If you are like most people, it will be easier to create a New Year's resolution than it will be to stick to it. Only an estimated 8 percent of people actually follow their resolutions throughout the year, and you can be one of them. Through hypnosis, you can increase your chances of sticking to your goals and achieving success. How Hypnosis Works Hypnosis is a natural way to harness the mind's ability to focus, set and achieve lifestyle changes. From ending performance anxiety to losing weight, hypnosis is able to work on your subconscious to implement your goals. During hypnosis, your mind is...show more content...
If you have tried to accomplish these goals and failed in the past, it is not your fault. For a change to be effective, you have to completely rewire the way your mind works. Through hypnosis, your subconscious is trained to enjoy activities like exercise or eating healthy instead of smoking or eating junk food. This painless mind training gradually takes hold in your mind so that you can enjoy these changes without feeling the cravings that you would normally experience. A Growing Treatment Option While hypnotism was once considered a parlor trick or stage performance, it has enjoyed a growing acceptance by the medical community in recent years. Even Stanford University lists hypnosis as a technique for controlling pain, ending an addiction, handling side effects, managing anxiety and ending a phobia. For chronic pain sufferers, hypnotherapy is often used to help alleviate the pain without medication. This powerful technique has uses in a broad range of conditions, goals and phobias. Whatever you are coping with or are trying to change, hypnosis is a proven technique that can help you. Harness Your Subconscious to Achieve Your Get

Goals are something unlimited that everyone should commonly set all throughout his or her life. In order to succeed, one needs to create a specific goal that seems sufficiently accomplishable. When something is unable to be accomplished, most people will give up and stop trying. This process of striving towards your aspirations and then suddenly quitting is eminently similar to a New Year's Resolution. At the mark of every new year, people in our society wait until the 365th day of the year to realize what they want to achieve in life. Many will question all of their wrong doings and all of the little aspects of their lives that they feel need to be changed. New Year's resolutions are meant for an individual to encourage growth and change from year to year. However, in reality, nobody ever sticks to their New Year's resolution because what he or she wants to alter is either unrealistic, unchangeable, or they instantaneously given up on the resolution by the end of January. Society trusting a New Year's resolution to determine how change is applicable to someone's life is extremely inadequate. New Year's resolutions ultimately enforce change among someone, that change is highly unlikely to actually be achievable due to the time span that one has to complete his or her resolution. People of all ages go month to month, possibly even week to week, looking for flaws or negative aspects in their life that they want to change. Most resolutions relate to losing weight, stopping

TRADITION!
Every year since I was little, my parents instilled in me the importance of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Not only is it the new year, but it is a time to repent for all of our wrongdoings during the year. We are given a chance to start over and to be inscribed into "the book of life." My whole family goes to the temple together, eat at my Bubbe and Pop–pops house together and break the fast together. It is TRADITION! No matter where everyone is or what everyone is doing, we all come home and celebrate the holidays as one big family. All 22 of us. It always begins and ends with food. From Matzo ball soup to meatballs to chicken to homemade cole slaw, the flavors and aromas are embedded in my mind and soul. As we gather around...show more content...
During the Aleinu, we would bow to the ark as a sign of respect and it always shows the respect towards the powerful figure. Some holidays are a time of celebration, but Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur in general is very serious. The overall meaning behind the prayers were for forgiveness and repentance. We asked god to forgive us for our sins that we have accumulated during the year. We broke gods covenant with us and once a year we are given a chance to reflect on those mishaps and present the case that we recognize those mistakes and will be better in the upcoming year. Another major theme is the recognition that god is almighty and there is almost a parent to child relationship between the divine ruler and the Jewish people. As we discussed in class, in many of the scriptural readings it is blatant that god is the supreme ruler over the people. That there is only one god and we pray to that god. Throughout the prayers we ask for forgiveness to that one god. We recognize that god is our leader who ultimately created us and that decides whether we are inscribed into "the book of life." Thetorah is the most holy writing that the Jewish people have. It was treated with the respect and care that it deserves. As we talked in class, the torah is stored in an ark. The torah is removed from the ark during the torah service. The torah readers used a Get

"I'm not as smart as my classmates."
"I'll never get better than a 2.7 grade–point average."
"I'll only get into a community college anyway"

Let's be real though, how many people really do succeed? Probably not so many. But of course I made a few, and this year I am really determined to full fill in at least one of them. This year in 2018 I plan to get in better shape, learn a new language and, earn some money. If you made a New Year's resolution too, remember that's it's okay to fail, just try your best!

Exercising will help me fall asleep faster. I sometimes struggle to fall asleep and, exercising can really help with that. Also it will make me more motivated to do things and, less lazy. Getting in better shape will also make me look better, which will lead into me becoming more confident. Lastly, since it involves eating healthy, I won't get sick so easily.
My second New Year's resolution is, to learn a new language. More specifically French, German and, maybe Russian. Whenever I go on holiday I usually make foreign friends. Most of the time those friends are Russian, which makes it very difficult to even try to communicate with them. This is the only reason why, I would want to learn Russian. Personally, I find other language like German and, French more interesting to learn. But if it's for easier communication with holiday friends, then I am down to learn the language. I extremely want to learn German and, French! I honestly want to learn those two language a million times more than any other languages in the world. I would incredibly enjoy learning French because, generally I just find the language very fancy. I bet you kind of do too! Also, probably one of my favourite and,

I was determined to keep searching for more ways to lose weight! For some unknown reason, I started soul searching, trying to figure out where I was going wrong with New Year's resolutions. I was trying to figure out why it was so hard for me to stick to my New Year's resolutions, until the end of the year. Out of all the things that I couldn't stay committed to during a New Year's resolution, I didn't care about them, like I cared about sticking to a resolution to lose weight. I began to closely analyze all the possible reasons why I failed at whatever traditional weight loss plan, I tried in the past. I also had to analyze why I wasn't able to consistently keep the weight off, without strict dieting. I hated how strict dieting made me feel! I couldn't help but believe that, there had to be a way for me to lose weight and keep it off without punishing myself with strict dieting. I knew that if I was going to lose weight and keep it off, that I had to use healthier weight loss strategies other than the ones that I'd used in the past. I also knew that, in order for me to have continued success, that my resolution had to consist of me losing weight, without ever making a New Year's resolution. I decided to start with noteating any fried foods. I felt like this was the best choice. The New Year is upon us once again, ready or not. This holiday seems to me the one that provokes the most thought and reflection, which is a good thing really. We all need to assess where we are in our journey of life and make adjustments. For the Christian, this is especially important. Ephesians 5:1–2 reminds us to "Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." The past year has been a great learning year for me in the area of relationships. I 've learned a lot about myself, others, and especially about how much God loves ME! Some of what I learned was very disappointing as I saw so much selfishness in relationships. I know that I am guilty of it too sometimes, but I just recognized it more, and saw the repercussions many times. Those consequences are painful and the effects are trickle–down. It has made me really think about Love a lot more and how Love as God intended it to be should be evident in our lives ALWAYS, and not just when it 's convenient for us. God spoke to me about His Love through my dog, Tracker. Yep, this is the Tracker story that I 've been meaning to put out there. This isn 't exactly how I thought I 'd convey it to everyone but as time has passed and I think about it even more, I know without a doubt that the truth that God impressed upon me that night is what is most important about the story. Tracker is an Get

Essay: Chinese New Year
Every year my family and I count down to the new year, this year I am came up with a resolution that I can keep with myself for a long time and use it until I am out of school all the way up to collage. New Year has always seemed to be a fresh start of a new cycle, this year I hope my resolution shall be one of the best one! My new year's resolution for 2018 is to do better in school and to think outside the box when it comes to schoolwork. This has been something that I have been trying to reach since Middle school and I am still trying even harder to do my very best in school now. There is also still some improvements that I need to make in school, like if I do bad on a test I know for next time to study real good for that subject. However, I am going to start off this year the right way by not only setting my goal, but also making sure I achieve each and every one of them.
This year I aim to focus on getting remarkable grades and staying focused in school no matter how boring and long it is. I plan to do better in school than I did in 2017. Just some things I have to stay on top of is studying and doing well on my homework no matter how long it takes. When I take tests I have to be careful and pick the best possible answer, again that's where the studying should pay off. If I am able to do everything I said then I should be sure to achieve my New Year's goal! This resolution will make me more focused and be ready for tests and homework that my teachers throw at me. If I make this change now then I will not have to worry about it in the future and I will be more on track and in good shape. Change is 100% needed in this area because I should be performing at my highest capability. Homework so far this year in most of my subjects is difficult and sometimes confusing. I am trying to get good grades in my subjects and so far I am not doing too bad but I need to do work beyond my ability. If I am having trouble my first instinct is to wait and go ask the teacher the next day, but I fell like now I should at least try my best and or ask family members for help. School is a #1 priority in my family and it can pretty much decide where you go. You could go to a great collage and have an amazing high paying job or

Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year in Malaysia lasts for 15 days, and is normally during January to February that varies from year to year. Normally, just like any other festivals, preparations are normally the starters of Chinese New Year.
First, the families will clean their home thoroughly. This is not only to welcome the guests to come duringChinese New Year, but also the Chinese's belief that this can 'sweep away the misfortune' from one's family, prepared for good luck to enter the house again. However, it is a bad thing to sweep the floor during Chinese New Year itself, because it is believed that this way, the family will 'sweep ' away all its good luck during the festival. Many parents will write riddles on lanterns for their children to guess, eating traditional dumplings – "tang yuan", and putting up candles to guide the good spirits home. This is also known as the 'Valentine's Day' in Malaysia. Females will write their name and contact number attached to an orange and throw them into a lake, while males pick them up and eat them, also hopefully contacting the attachment's containing name and address. And here comes the end of Chinese New Year.
Chinese New Year is a meaningful way for the Chinese to start their calendar for a year. The most unique part of this festival is that it not only focused on bringing one's own family good luck, but also the traditions that are passed down from one generation to the next that is followed every year that strengthens families' bonds, such as the main feast/unity feast "е›ўењ†йҐ" and visiting relatives "拜年".
