India : Rajasthan, the rich past of
The region of Shekhawati, situated about a hundred kilometres north-west of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, remained practically unknown to tourists for many years. Lost in the desert bordered by dusty tracks, this underrated region is now emerging from its isolation and lethargy, revealing its colourful towns which probably contain the largest amount of frescoes in the whole of India. This region came to life in the XVIIth century with the establishment of astute merchants, the marwaris, instigated by the local lords. They soon became wealthy by controlling the trades of opium, spices and indigo on the caravan routes. But their golden age began during the second half of the XIXth century, when the new conditions of British colonisation forced them to emigrate to the principal ports of Bombay and Calcutta. They carried out lucrative business there and built sumptuous mansions or havelis in their original villages, showing off their social success. Their residences were covered in naive, colourful frescoes abounding with scenes of everyday life, religious, historic and sometimes even erotic themes. In order to appear modern and to impress the villagers, they portrayed all the latest of western technology, car, planes and gramophones, with marked preference for railways. Trains covered the walls long before the existence of railways in India...
