2010 is Mark Twain’s year with the celebration of the centenary of the death of the famous American author (April 21, 1910) and the 175th birthday of his birth (November 30, 1835). Most of his life and of his work is related to the Mississippi river. To start with its name. In 1867 Samuel Langhorne Clemens took as pen name Mark Twain, an expression used by the sailors when they probed the river to find a channel with their boat. “Twain Mark! “(two lengths), a measurement of depth which announces to the pilot of the steamer that water was still navigable. At the time of his training to become a steamer pilot (1859) Mark Twain studied 3200 km of river banks and consigned its memories in one of its most famous novels “Life on the Mississippi”. Let us follow the writer on the roads along the large river from Mineapolis and Saint-Paul the twin cities towards Memphis and to New Orleans. Without forgetting a journey in New England in Hartford Connecticut where Mark Twain lived from 1874 to 1891 in a superb residence has become today a writer's house open to the public and a dynamic museum installed in a modern wing.
