2020 is here, and with that comes our February Hemp & CBD Magazine Show Guide Edition! We are as excited as ever to be bringing you our third edition of the Hemp & CBD Expo, and our third Show Guide edition of the Hemp & CBD Magazine. This issue is again full some fantastic companies that will be exhibiting at the SPRING2020 Expo and should serve as a mouth watering sample of the great array of products and services you can expect to see over the weekend of Feb 29th and March 1st, in Hall 2 of the NEC Birmingham. The industry is currently undergoing a challenging time, with regulations, legislation, and restrictions, all serving as the source of ongoing stress for the average business owner in this industry. No one ever said this would be easy, but we are again going to have to stand together and continue doing all we can as an industry to ensure common sense prevails. As i write this, the UK has officially left the EU and will be in a ‘transition period’. During this time we’ll see what happens with the market and will have to be quick to adapt to what’s thrown at us in some cases. The FSA now have more control without influence of the EFSA and a lot hangs in the balance with the stance they take. So far we have not seen them to be backing down, but if i’ve learned one thing from this industry, it is that nothing is certain. With that said, we are always stronger together and i hope you’ll join us for the discussion and to represent a united front that is the UK’s cannabis industry at our Expo. Keep talking, keep sharing, and keep showing the UK public the progression this industry is making.

THE NUMBERS IN
REVIEW
As you all know 3-4 times a year we get the results out for the industry. As the only people who can actually do this (put simply we have a bigger global and UK reach than anyone) we put a fair amount of effort into our research and our figures are shored up with the figures from people like CBD Intel, indeed we trade figures and statistics quite a lot. These figures represent the total sales of CBD and regulated medical cannabis, they do not represent the leisure market or unregulated markets in any way shape or form. It’s also worth noting we use the English number for billion 1, 000, 000, 000, 000 for 1bn not the Americanised version of 1, 000, 000, 000 that are usually quoted in American figures.
So, the figures.
Last year 2018 we saw the following £110m of sales in the UK €410m of sales in Europe $2.2bn (ish) sales globally. The figures for 2019 have come back as £160m for UK sales up £50m €490m for EU sales up €80m €2.76bn worldwide up $0.56bn £2.76bn £2.2bn £490m £410m

We predicted that the market would grow and continue to do so for the coming year and by and large the market has done what we predicted. With a few issues. Mostly it would seem down to 2 major factors. Firstly, Novel Foods has had a fairly major impact on overall sales. Some retail stores that were stocking have ceased to sell and others have cut back to minimum levels. We think that has impacted overall sales by around £20m in the UK and €30m in Europe. Growth is still happening, but at lower levels than in previous years. We also think that market saturation is playing a huge factor. Of course, three years ago we represented almost the entire trade, as such we could keep a relatively tight reign on who was selling what
MAG
A R TI CL E
and how. Now of course although we still have massive market share (around 70%), there are an awful lot of sellers selling and marketing incorrectly and as such consumers are becoming disengaged with the products due to low quality and a lack of efficacy. The figures this year are therefore a little lower than predicted. We know for example that many businesses have remained effectively static, they haven’t grown, nor have they shrunk. Many businesses feel that the industry has become more difficult. Certainly, many are understandably nervous about the lack of credible news regarding novel foods and as such quite a few have scaled back or not gone for quite the growth they would have pushed for. Others have walked away from the market entirely. The CBD “boomtime” is over and we are now a maturing market. The UK is still the single biggest market in Europe, there are a number of factors that contribute to this, the single biggest factor is that we are the first country in Europe from America, we share a common language and many products that have become popular in Europe have come through the UK first. Over the coming year we foresee issues ahead, not all of that is negative. We predict a massive crash globally of the medical cannabis market, many of the names that have become almost household over the past couple of years will cease to exist, stories like Canopy having a “weeks’ worth of money
left in the bank” are almost always exaggerated but for instance we know from our global members that they have ditched or cut almost every partnership plan and cash burn project in favour of licensing and selling the assets they have. Here in the UK, we feel that some of the names that have been bandies about will simply shut up shop and leave investors with nothing but a hole in their portfolio or savings. The same can be said to a lesser degree of some of the CBD
Growth is still happening, but at lower levels than in previous years. Companies. Many of the smaller brands, and some of the bigger ones will be absorbed into larger businesses and some will become huge brands with many smaller names underneath them. We can already see this happening. Of course, this isn’t all bad, what will happen in the medical market will almost certainly drive the future. Better regulation, more transparency, better products. EU GMP regulations and standards are far higher than the US and Canadian versions, that a fact. Indeed, the US doesn’t even have a credible standard for GMP for
pharmaceuticals. GAP (General Agricultural Practices) is about as far as they go. Nothing produced in wither the States or Canada is allowed as a licensed medicine under EU regulations. It really is simple. Likewise, the CBD market will become better regulated by schemes similar to TrustCanna, already a leader and of course affordable for smaller businesses. There is no formal “kitemark” that applies to the food industry. Something else others have got so wrong. Already we see the Trading Standards Offices gravitating towards credible information rather than hearsay and the outright lies spouted by some of the bodies out there. The Novel Foods issue will be sorted once and for all, although we do predict a very rocky road in the beginning. We have heard tell that many Trading Standards Officers are simply going to ignore the FSA, that should make it all very interesting to start with.
Overall we wish you a great new year, we look forward to dealing with you over the coming months and of course we look forward to a fantastic AGM in June along with the shows we usually do over the coming months, its great to interact with you all at these events. We hope to speak to you all soon.

The answer is, yes for the actually help subdue on most part. Evidence shows CBD can e's mental stress. Here' s biologically how: The CB1 receptor is the receptor
that THC binds to, ultimately giving people that pleasurable high. Our bo dies natural in-built endocannabinoid for thi s receptor is called anandamide. CBD doesn ’t directly stimulate this receptor, but what it does is block fatty acid amide hydroxylase (FAAH). Basically what this is, is the enzym e that breaks down anandamide. Blocking this enzyme means that anandamide isn’t bro ken down, so more anandamide is left to bin d to CB1 receptors and that lovely feeling can continue (5)
CBD also stimulates the release of 2-AG which directly acts on CB 1 receptors. It also stimulates CB2 receptors which play a crucial role in the immu ne system (5)
It activates adenosine rec eptors which play an important role in the bra in. These receptors are important for regula ting dopamine levels but also levels of glutam ate. Glutamate is a chemical that excites the nervous system, and too much firing of glutam ate can lead to anxiety and burn out. CB D stimulates the receptors which keep thi s in control (4)
It also directly stimulates serotonin receptors. Serotonin is an important element of maintaining balanced mental wellbeing. It is the target of many ph armaceutical drugs for the mind, including Prozac. It soothes stress, lifts low mood an d is important for sociability which is inextri cably linked with people's happiness. CB D activates the 5-HT1A specifically, a bu tton which increases levels of serotonin (4)

It's all well and good providing a cellular understanding of CBD's affects but this doesn’t always necessarily tra nslate into working on people. Many of the se studies are conducted on rats and mice, or just isolated cells. Unfortunately, whilst thi s gives evidence it doesn’t necessarily mean tha t you can guarantee it will work in treatm ent. However, there have been some studies on people which validate what people alr eady suspect.
HUMAN STUDIES

SO WHAT NOW?

CBD EXTRACTION
CBD oil has become extremely popular in the past few years and is manufactured into a wide variety of products including edibles, oils, and topical creams, all of which offer their specific ways of helping people. The way in which CBD oil is extracted from the cannabis and hemp plant can produce very different products and have different impacts on your health. With this in mind It’s important to understand how companies extract their CBD oil from hemp and also to take into consideration the differences between full-spectrum CBD, broad-spectrum CBD, and CBD isolates. CBD has to be extracted from the plant in order to produce a concentrated form that contains active ingredients and is consumable. In order for the cannabinoids such as CBD in cannabis to be effective, they must be decarboxylated which is the process of
MAG
heating the cannabinoid to activate its therapeutic properties. CBD in the cannabis plant is present in the form of acid precursors known as “CBDA, cannabidolic acid, or acidic CBD” rather than just CBD. The CBDA is inactive and needs to be activated to unlock its complete benefits. During decarboxylation, the inactive CBDA in the raw cannabis plant transforms to the active CBD when exposed to light or heat via smoking, heating or drying. The CBD extraction is also essential to eliminates any types of microbes that may be present in the plant in its raw form and can present a variety of health risks if not completely removed.
Extraction also helps to removes undesirable compounds such as plant waxes and lipids, which may also be harmful. The entire extraction process starts with finding a rich CBD plant source to extract from which ideally should be 100% organically grown. Organic is an important factor to note when choosing your CBD as some companies may extract their CBD oil from plants that can be contaminated with toxic chemicals such as pesticides, or contain a whole host of undesirable chemicals or heavy metals that have accumulated from cheap non-organic fertiliser use.

The olive oil extraction process is probably the oldest method of extracting CBD and many enthusiasts claim it to be the best method for DIY extraction. It is considered to be the safest, most cost effective and simple method to carry out.
MAG
There are three common methods that the majority of companies use to Extract CBD, each varying in its end result, health effect and impact on the environment. The first of these being olive oil extraction. The olive oil extraction process is probably the oldest method of extracting CBD and many enthusiasts claim it to be the best method for DIY extraction. It is considered to be the safest, most cost effective and simple method to carry out. The process involves the raw plant materials being heated (decarboxylated) to the desired temperature for a specific amount of time so that the chemicals in the plant are activated. Following this you heat a mixture of water and olive oil in a pan and then add the decarboxylated plant matter and continue to heat for about an hour at a gentle simmer. The Mixture is then left to cool until it is at room temperature. As it cools the mixture will begin to separate and, the now infused oil, will begin to solidify on the surface. Once at room temperature the mixture can be refrigerated for several hours to maximise solidification and potency. The oil should then be stored in an airtight container and kept in a dark cool environment.
Because the olive oil is infused rather than evaporated during this process the resulting extract isn’t as concentrated as the other methods produce and so the dosage that the consumer takes has to compensate for this. Olive oil is a very versatile base ingredient and so the resulting product can be used in either edible products or in topical skin applications such as moisturiser. The only bad points are that the olive oil is a “perishable item which does not have the longest of shelf lives and must be kept in a cool, dark area. Because of this it is not an extraction method that works well for many large scale CBD producers. Solvent extraction uses ethanol, butane, propane, isopropyl, or alcohol to extract the CBD. It is one of the cheapest, quickest, fastest and simplest processes. It does have its negatives however and is also one of the most dangerous methods due to the highly flammable nature of the liquids Involved. Solvent extraction, extracts not only the cannabinoids but also the chlorophyll, which can give some products a bitter taste and there is also the possibility that the solvent residue can be toxic if it is not completely eliminated during the evaporation process. The solvents can also dissolves the plant waxes which is detrimental to the end product as the waxes do. Contain a number of nutrients.
A R TI CL E In solvent extraction flowers and plant trimmings are soaked in solvent, stripping it of the cannabinoids. The liquid is then heated and the evaporation process leaves behind a concentrated CBD oil. Finally we have the CO2 extraction method which is the most advanced and advised form of extraction. It is also the most expensive method but it does make the most potent, safe and chlorophyll-free CBD. CO2 extraction process uses a machine called a “closed-loop extractor” which has three chambers. The first one holds pressurised, solid CO2 or dry ice; the second chamber has dried plant material in it and the final chamber separates the end product. CO2 is pumped from the first to the second chamber, which transforms into“supercritical” CO2 (between a gas and liquid state) The supercritical CO2 then runs through the materials and extracts the cannabinoids. It is then pumped into the final chamber where the CO2 rises and separates from the CBD extract.
The oil extract is then refined again through a process called “winterization” where all solvents, chlorophyll, waxes and fats are removed, creating a clean oil with a 70-90% level of CBD along with assorted minor cannabinoids and terpenes. Most premium CBD producers now use CO2 extraction because it produces a very safe, reliable, high quality product. The final product is cleaner, has a much lower chance of of possessing any contaminants and sees very little active ingredient being lost.
Most premium CBD producers now use CO2 extraction because it produces a very safe, reliable, high quality product.
CBD Distillate is another refinement process which is starting to gain in popularity. This is where high heat is applied to the raw extracted oil to further separate the compounds and refine the extract through a distillation chamber. Whilst this application does result in a very pure and potent form of CBD, one big drawback is that by refining the oil further, the extract can lose any traces of other terpenes that may be present, thus eliminating the “entourage effect” for the end user. Once CBD has been extracted there are several different oils that can be that can be produced.
M A G
A R TI C LE
Full-spectrum CBD contains all of the cannabinoids and other natural compounds found in cannabis such as terpenes and amino acids and trace amounts of THC. Broad-spectrum CBD has the trace amounts of THC removed by going through an additional specialised process called liquid chromatography. This method selectively binds to the THC and removes it whilst leaving all the remaining cannabinoids, terpenes and amino acids intact. Finally there is CBD isolate which is created by cooling and purifying the extract into a white flavourless powder. CBD isolate contains a very pure and high 99% concentration of CBD and as a result it is suited best to those who need high doses. The CBD industry currently suffers from a lack of standardisation and regulation. Take the term “CBD-rich” for example, what
MAG
exactly does this mean? Is it any extract that contains over 70% CBD? or 90%? And what form does it take, CBD, CBD-A or a combination of both? There is currently no right answer. There are groups that are working towards creating standards but nothing has been set in stone yet and without standards, quality becomes difficult to clearly and uniformly define. If you know how your CBD has been extracted and you understand the process however at least this can give you some assurances about what might be the best product to buy. Every extraction method has its pros and cons, no method is great at everything but if you can look at the factual information that is available currently then you should be able to pick what CBD product is best for you and your individual situation.

BRITISH CANNABIS
®
5 YEARS IN THE UK CANNABIS INDUSTRY AND WHAT IT HAS TAUGHT US. As I sit down at our farm in Portugal on a Saturday morning, one thing that has not changed in the last 5 years is how busy we still are. It’s rare we get the opportunity to take a step back and realise what we have achieved. It’s been monumental, yet we can get consumed in the day to day running of the business and sometimes it’s easy to forget what we have done and how far we and the industry have come. There is enough already to fill a novel, but being on this journey I can easily summarise some of the key milestones that has seen an industry blossom as a direct result of the levels of passion in the individuals that have populated it.
MAG
The early days We entered the CBD industry in 2015 when there was not really an industry to talk about. You could fit all the companies currently trading, round a boardroom table and the general public hadn’t really heard of CBD. We launched the Canabidol® range of CBD products and they were an instant success. We saw significant revenues from our primary channel, which was Amazon, feedback on the products was unbelievable. I guess this was the first time we really comprehended the unquantifiable potential this product could have. Annual sales on Amazon were in excess of £1 million after 3 months of trading and we took advantage of the uncompetitive organic search opportunity. We were ranking number 1 for all the top search terms. We also started to get the product into retail stores across the country. Then came the first of many issues. As CBD products were not supported by Amazon, they closed our account overnight. We lost the biggest sales channel we had and were owed a 6-figure sum by Amazon which threatened our future. It took us 12 months and some costly legal bills to recover that money. While this was a major obstacle, we continued to build our direct sales and retail network of resellers.
A R TI CL E

BRITISH CANNABIS® team at Hemp & CBD Expo September 2019
As we set out to break down the barriers to cannabis, things were never going to be easy. Our path was filled with major hurdles including advertising restrictions, banking, payment gateways, insurance and convincing mainstream retailers to back the CBD category. Losing the Amazon channel was a blow, but in business you can either moan that it's not fair, or keep going and take whatever wins you can from the landscape you're working within. Perseverance turned out to be the biggest factor in who did and who did not succeed in this industry. Only true entrepreneurialism and an ability to change and adapt has kept companies in business year after year. Negativity and uncertainty has been a big factor over the years and I feel that this came mostly from those in the CBD industry with less of a traditional business mindset and experience to fall back on. Having 'been there and done that', I can guarantee that facing what this industry throws at us with pessimism and cynicism never helps. Following through on your opportunities, whatever the setbacks, is the only route to success.
Bottles lined up to go into the bottling line.
Into 2016, we then saw the biggest threat we have seen to the industry. The MHRA made a public statement that CBD was considered a medicine and would require appropriate licencing to be sold. It was this news that united the blooming industry and kick started the growth we see today. This was the first time we thought this industry could be gone overnight. We, as established business operators had seen it before. Legislative or regulatory shift could literally stop us in our tracks. This led to the birth of the Cannabis Trades Association (CTA), which was the result of the largest CBD companies at the time getting together and discussing their options. The CTA was formed with the intention of representing the industry to the government regulators. If we didn’t stand up to the regulators, we didn’t stand a chance. Let me tell you, they aren’t as scary as you would think. This has been demonstrated meeting after meeting as we hold the wealth of knowledge and an understanding that allows us to guide and direct regulatory change. This, without doubt makes a difference. Anyone who was at that initial meeting with the MHRA will agree, we knew history was being made. This was the first indication that this
M A G
A R TI C LE cannabis sector could represent itself in a profession manner and be respected. It was the start of a long lasting and mutually beneficial relationship the CTA has with the MHRA. I guess the important point we saw coming out of this meeting was the informal agreement of a suggested 200mg daily limit on CBD in foods would be respected. Below 200mg a day would be fine in foods, above 200mg would be considered a medicinal dosage. This is a limit that we have seen adopted now by the industry as a whole. It’s referenced time and time again. It was a sensible threshold that has no determination in law, but has been adopted and accepted by the regulators and the industry moving forwards. This was a change, a benchmark, and an achievement. While we did not change the law, we arrived at an understanding that allowed the uninhibited growth of the industry without threat from the regulators. We left the meeting with assurances that keeping to this limit and not making medical claims would allow us to continue without interference from the MHRA. I have continued to see the CTA perform a vital role in this industry. It provided the backbone needed to get us from those early days to today and beyond. Recently we have seen the whole issue of novel foods come to the forefront after overshadowing the whole of 2019. Assurances have been gained regarding this issue by the CTA as we enter the new year, through its interactions with the Food Safety Authority (FSA).
MAG
Following a CTA meeting with the FSA in November last year, where the CTA raised the subject of any public safety risk underpinning the allocation of resources to the enforcement of novel foods provisions, a statement has been received confirming that
The FSA has no current plans to immediately withdraw CBD products from the shelves but retains the right to change this stance if new evidence is produced that concludes CBD is not safe, or for any other relevant reason. This also confirms that after assessing the safety concerns around CBD, they currently have no evidence that is unsafe. The Chief Executive of the FSA confirmed this in his report on 21st January 2020 in saying that
We have not been made aware of any safety incidents relating to CBD products on the market, so we are not planning to insist on an immediate removal of the products from shelves.
https://www.food.gov.uk/sites/default/files/m edia/document/fsa-20-01-03-chief-executives-r eport-final.pdf
The issue of novel foods has always been one of confidence. While it seems that the technical aspect of whether CBD extracts are novel or not will continue, the risk of enforcement is now unlikely given the statement by the Chief Executive of the FSA. Yes, I am biased towards the CTA. We founded the association and have seen first hand what has been achieved. However, between you and me, I know that without the CTA or its scrutiny of the FSA process, the unquestionable unknown that has inhibited growth would not have been addressed. As far as I’m concerned, the FSA have now confirmed that no action will take place unless new evidence comes to light that CBD is unsafe. Highly unlikely and just another example of what the CTA does behind closed doors. Personally, I have been sat in meetings discussing the matter of novel foods with the FSA, European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Commission’s Directorate General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), and the whole novel foods group covering Europe and their interpreters. The process has covered many years with some frustrations but in 20 years of business, I have not experienced government influence on this level. They don’t understand it, we do. That’s where we play to our advantage.
A R TI CL E
BRITISH CANNABIS® is born So the founding of the CTA was the catalyst for our confidence in the industry moving forwards. Whilst the challenges were big, the passion we saw from those in the CTA, and its rapidly increasing membership, gave us assurances that this industry was going places. Our business has always been self-funded. We started with a small budget and have continued to drive all profits back into the business. As the single shareholder in the group of companies, I still haven’t taken any profits as a director. What we have seen is all our hard work and commitment paying off as we have grown at an exponential rate, doing what no one else was doing. The very basis of any business I operate is to do what no one else is doing, learn what no one else knows, and take advantage of the opportunities this presents. Our passion is our knowledge, we know more because we do more. We have spent millions on new research and development facilities, extraction equipment, clean rooms and analytical equipment. We could have done what all the competition was doing, buy an extract, dilute it and sell it. That’s not us, that’s not BRITISH CANNABIS®, we do it because we
can. We are great at it because we love what we do. We are genuinely in this industry for the process, not the result. I have been involved in many industries and emerging markets in the last 20 year. One thing I can say without any doubt is this is by far the most exciting opportunity I will ever see. What has been accomplished has not just been a checkmark of success, but an absolute privilege to be part of and be a pioneer where no one else dares. In 5 years we have developed: a proprietary natural alcohol based extraction method, that saw us ignore the industry standard of CO2; the development of a THC removal process utilising molecular distillation to literally deconstruct cannabis on a molecular level; the development of the UK’s first clinically proven cannabis cosmetic; the first golden, great tasting oil to be launched in the UK; and, a stable, compliant, allergen free water-soluble CBD. At every stage we have been given the opportunity to do things better and each time we have enjoyed the process more than the result. We do what we do because we are passionate about this plant. This business just facilitates our desire to learn, to develop, and to pioneer.
So, what’s for the future? Compliance... It’s always been the fundamental that has been an absolute requirement in an industry like this. It will continue. The last 5 years have been unpredictable. But we certainly see a shift for the way things are going. Big businesses are keen to get on the CBD bandwagon. But compliancy red tape is the biggest obstacle as we see our contracts are now with larger and larger companies. Its not just been about getting things right but demonstrating what we do. Our supply chain and ticking every single box required to satisfy due diligence of the likes of Norkem, it has seen a dedicated team within our business emerge just to deal with these requests. If there is one thing that is for certain, you will not survive in this industry moving forwards if you are not compliant. It’s where we have positioned ourselves as a supplier here in the UK. We do things to a level of excellence that this industry has never seen. We are the bridge between the industry taking the next steps. Forget launching a product with imported CBD, you will not satisfy the requirements of these established food businesses when you want to take that leap into big business. We have seen the BBC’s recent report in “Trust me I’m a Doctor” where they performed lab tests on products from the major brands on the high street in the UK. The two biggest brands in Holland and Barrett and LLyods Pharmacy showed no CBD in one instance and about 50% in the next. While we can learn from other industries that bad practice always takes place in the early days, companies quickly learn by their mistakes. If there is one thing we can be sure of, it is that compliance and due diligence is the most important factor moving forwards. Tests like those performed by the BBC's Trust Me I'm A Doctor, see our brand pass with flying colours, is a testament to our dedication to excellence. No other brand was more accurate in its compliancy or accuracy for advertised levels of CBD. What we can take from this, is we are getting it right! More so, than any other supplier out there. No doubt this article has been done in haste and within a few hours of my deadline. One thing I’m sure of is that, yeah, it’s Saturday, I’m working yet again, but I’m on my farm and have just been discussing the development of artisan hemp seed oils and the acquisition of a new growing facility in Portugal. This industry is one I’m not just proud to be a part of, but one that is a pleasure every day. It’s not easy, the roadmap is not set, it’s down to us to direct the industry where we want it to go. What is without doubt is the public’s clear acknowledgement that CBD is here to stay and what we have achieved without challenge is making lives better. We have taken this industry through a transitional period and there is no doubt that the industry has a future for hundreds of years to come.

WHY CBD DESERVES BETTER THAN MCT
I first discovered MCT oil working in the cosmetics industry, where it was officially listed as capric/caprylic triglyceride, hiding its true form, masquerading around under the trade name "Fractionated Coconut Oil". MCT oil, short for medium-chain triglycerides, is a blanket term that encompasses a range of fatty acids that are synthesised from coconut and palm fruits. It's one of the most common carrier oils for cannabis extracts, alongside hemp seed oil.
T
The popularity of MCT is easily understandable, as these oils are cheap to produce and easy to obtain. The issue arises when we start to care about transparency. MCT could contain caproic acid, caprylic acid, capric acid and/or lauric acid. These fatty acids are prevalent in both coconut and palm kernel oils, where they make up 55% and 54% of their respective fatty acid profiles. As a CBD consumer, it is difficult to know what fatty acids are present in the MCT oil without independent laboratory testing. Finding out whether your MCT is produced from coconut or palm oil is impossible without having a strong relationship with a reputable supplier that has full auditability of their product. Being able to ensure full traceability, in turn, increases prices, voiding the primary allure of MCT.
MAG
Transparency when dealing in MCT is a rarity, which becomes a real problem in a consumer-lead market. MCT doesn't scream palm oil unless you really do your research. It's impossible to tell just by looking at a label whether your oil contains palm oil or palm derivatives, or whether the palm oil is RSPO certified (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). Google Trends shows an increase of approximately 95% in searches for "palm oil free products" since December 2017. Palm oil has received a lot of media attention due to the ecocide caused by extensive monoculture (we've all seen the Rang-Tan in my bedroom animation), but few would suspect that coconut oil is a ticking media time bomb for unsustainable and unethical agricultural practices.

Creative Director at Cannafull Ltd. M A G
A R TI C LE Coconuts pose the same monoculture issue as palm oil. The surge in popularity over the past five years of coconut oil, coconut water, and other coconut derivatives have seen countries in South-East Asia turn into factories to keep up with western demand. This has led to a devastating phenomenon in coconut hotspots such as Thailand, where native monkeys are shackled and forced to harvest coconuts. Monkeys can harvest on average 5 times more coconuts than humans, which helps farmers keep up with demand whilst keeping costs down. Type "monkey slave coconut" into Google and you'll see an array of articles highlighting this issue. Unsurprisingly, the link between this barbaric practice and the omnipresence of coconut and palm derivatives on the market is hidden from the average unsuspecting consumer. A few months ago, I was one on the market for a full-spectrum CBD extract, in coconut-based MCT oil with full certification. Not a single seller was able to confirm the composition of their MCT. They had folders full of cannabinoid CoA's, but not a single file on where their carrier oil was from. This is something CBD oil sellers really don't know much about, despite the fact that the public, especially the CBD consumer, is showing a growing desire for natural, traceable, sustainable products. With the appeal of CBD being centred around natural, organic, plant-based remedies, it wouldn't make sense to dilute them into a carrier oil such as MCT, with all the moral conundrums it presents. The duopoly of MCT and hemp seed oil is causing the industry and the consumers to ignore the opportunities and benefits of other natural carrier oils that don't pose the same ethical issues as mass-produced, uncertified coconut and palm derived MCT. CBD carrier oils need to diversify to keep up with public demand, and it makes sense to start with oils that are already commonly used as supplements in their own right. Oils such as starflower oil (thistle oil), borage oil and evening primrose oil are popular due to their high levels of GLA (gamma-linoleic acid), which help stimulate prostaglandins, active lipid compounds found throughout the body that play a big role in controlling

inflammation. Flaxseed oil is an excellent vegan source of Omega 3 & 6, and St John's Wort supplements have been used for centuries to help control mood disorders. Using specially selected natural oils as a vessel for CBD would allow us to tailor extracts with synergising ingredients for optimal effectiveness. The food industry struggles with the current offerings of carrier oils. We're all aware that CBD isn't always the most palatable flavour, and often difficult to integrate into food products. CBD extracted into olive oil is becoming more commonplace as consumers have created a demand for a

Rapeseed oil and sunflower oil are both mild, flavourless and cost-effective carrier oils, grown and processed in Europe, that are becoming more regularly available. Other more adventurous options include avocado oil, that is frequently used in cooking for its distinctive colour and flavour but is also rich in vitamin D, and oils that are by-products of other food manufacturing processes such as tomato seed oil and rice bran oil. The need for more carrier oil options is even more relevant for the cosmetic branch of the CBD industry. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of CBD make it a powerful active ingredient in a multitude of skincare products from anti-ageing creams to acne treatments. As a cosmetic formulator that focusses on natural ingredients, I work with a wide range of plant oils that all have their own unique therapeutic properties.
When I look at the potential of CBD in cosmetics, I see an opportunity for carrier oils such as poppy seed oil, a UK grown product rich in natural ceramides, and rosehip seed oil, which is often used as a stand-alone treatment for acne. Pomegranate seed oil receives a special mention here, as its levels of punicic acid are not only highly effective in rejuvenating and anti-ageing products, but have also been the subject of medical research, as it has been proven to play a significant role in preventing the proliferation of malignant cells in breast cancer* and prostate cancer**. The CBD industry has evolved immensely in recent years, with hugely technical extraction methods providing the cleanest and most comprehensive extracts seen to date. With so much time and effort going into sourcing high-quality cannabis, why is it that the industry is paying so little attention to the remaining 95% of the contents of those little glass bottles?

PREVENTION S THE CURE V CTURER FA NU MA D CB RN DE MO E TH R FO LE CIP IN PR UL EF A US By Dr. Callie Seaman
This statement applies to everything in life, from cultivation practices, manufacturing of goods, running a car to your own personal health and wellbeing. A lot of the problems we run into are quite often easily avoided by putting in a little bit of leg work at the start and regularly maintaining them. If these simple routines are formed, the end result will speak for itself! Now one of the biggest issues we face as humans is the threat from microbes. From fungus to bacteria and the old virus or 2, we are far outnumbered due to their ability to reproduce at a phenomenal rate. Bacteria don’t actually have a life span, and as long as they have everything they need to thrive, they just keep reproducing. Microbes are the one thing that will live through nuclear attack, with spores being able to survive years until the right conditions are encountered, then
MAG
BOOM, we have expediential growth and an outbreak on our hands. Now, not all microbes are the bad guys and actually there are a lot of them we need to survive. We are covered in what are known as commensals that colonise our skin without us even knowing. The great thing is some of them even protect us against pathogenic bacteria, making sure they don’t take over and become problematic. They do this by releasing chemicals which deter the pathogens from colonising the skin. However, we all move around, touching things that are contaminated, picking up various microbes and transporting them to new locations, which may be the perfect environment for them to thrive and infect a host, be that a human, a plant, a cosmetic or food. This can lead disease or spoilage of a product. There are a number of steps which can be performed in order to prevent and discourage the colonisation. One of the very first things to do is to risk assess what you are trying to achieve. Identify what problems could occur, so one example is which of the microbes could possible inhabit your project. Then look at the source of the issue, can this be prevented or controlled?
If we look at this from a cultivator of medicinal cannabis perspective, there are many parameters that must be met in order to meet regulatory standards, be safe for consumption and poses no risk to humans. The second thing to consider is the risk to the crop yields and productivity, if this is compromised, there is obviously a reduction in what can be extracted and made into medication. Once you have identified the risk, preventative measures can be drawn up and implemented. For example heavy metals such as cadmium and lead can be prevented from getting into the plant by testing the nutrients and soils before application. Indoor cultivation helps to prevent pesticide drift from other farms. Regular cleaning of the facility and sterilisation of equipment after use. Probes such as pH meter and thermometers should be cleaned with peroxide between testing of separate tanks to help prevent cross contamination and the spread of root diseases. Changing of clothes before entering the facility prevents introduction of not only microbes, but insects. Filtering of the air that enter the facility will also help prevent grow room infestation. Make sure that any plants or
A R TI CL E
seeds which have been grown within another facility are quarantined, inspected and tested for any plant disease such as fusarium or botrytis. If this is identified, the plants can either be discarded or treated before allowing them into the larger facility. Monitoring of the environment is also paramount to ensure maximum productivity of your crop. Knowledge is power! The more you know about what is happening within the growing area when you are not present, the easier it is to tailor the irrigations and environmental controls. If disease has been detected in the plants, the environment can also be altered to deter the growth of pathogenic mould, but if you don’t have this information, preventative measures are hard to implement. These same principals can be applied to a manufacturing facility to help maintain good working practices. Good hygiene and house-keeping from the start are the key to a sustainable business or just preventing you stress in the long term. From a manufacturing perspective shelf life and spoilage are two of the biggest challenges, both can be improved and prevented.
Preservative has been the go to for this for many years, however, as consumers become more conscious of what they are consuming and regulation becoming stricter, this is not the one stop answer. Some of these chemicals used are carcinogenic, so these changes in the limits allowed in products, is nothing but a positive thing. Which takes us back to hygiene and the prevention being easier than the cure, stopping the microbes taking up residence in the first place. Within the CBD sector, potency and present of unwanted cannabinoids has also been an issue. Purchasing products from companies abroad can lead you into problems with the law. Make sure the supplier has all the correct importation and legal documentation, and that you obtain an independent certificate of analysis from an accredited lab. Testing the product for potency can prevent adverse effects of the consumer and problems with the law. Traceability is the key.
place before hand, to help ensure good customer relations and prevent reputation damage. I have only touched the tip of the iceberg here, but information is power, and prevention is easier than the cure.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TESTING AND WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW. As we’re all sure you are aware there have been several issues historically with testing CBD. Not that we can’t test, but can we accurately test? Right now, the CTA are dealing with a relatively large company who suggest that to test their products a lab requires “special techniques” (this has been used before by the now defunct Sacred Canna) and while there are some products that do require the adding of reagents to split the CBD out for testing, the fact remains that a standard testing procedures generally do pick up CBD where CBD is present. Damien Bove of ADACT said -
“To suggest that the lack of standard methods is a reason a product is testing as CBD free is absolutely without grounds. If you have a test method for CBD and can detect CBD, you can with a very high level of confidence declare a product to be CBD free (to the level of detection of the method). To suggest that there is an extraction method that means your CBD is somehow different and can’t be detected would mean you are not selling CBD you have a different compound and should not be selling it as CBD”. The history of testing In the beginning there were few testing facilities that could handle cannabinoids. This is down to the lack of testing required, the legal framework and several other factors.
MAG
Cannabinoids were first individualised in 1940, when British chemist Robert Cahn discovered or at least laid out the building blocks of CBN, CBD was discovered in 1942 and THC was identified in 1964. We’ve been testing with varying degrees of capability ever since. At first we tested with Gas Chromatography which we’ve been testing with since 1959 and indeed is a very accurate testing procedure, but, as I’m sure everyone is aware, you heat the sample and as such testing for heat sensitive compounds and precursors requires stabilisation. In a relatively recent legal case, the Home Office were forced to withdraw evidence against Jeff Ditchfield because he supplied THCa to a patient and was able to prove this, obviously the Home Office tested (and still predominantly does) using GCMS, at which point, the THCa promptly became THC, which made for an interesting set of phone calls between the CPS and another lab. All charges were dropped very quietly. HPLC is the current “gold standard” and is a “multi-modal partition technique” and has been in common use since around the mid 1970’s for many particles, however, HPLC by its very nature keeps advancing and has only really been used in the cannabinoid sector for around 6 years. There are at least 8 different HPLC variants and more are being worked on at any point in time. Now we as an industry are looking into the use of UHPLC which can distinguish whether cannabinoids have been denatured (isolated) and then reassembled from those
isolates. Remember, isolates are Novel, which gives you other complications. Much has also been made of ISO 17025 in order to “blind consumers with science” when in fact this is a “General Requirement for Competence of Testing and Calibration” as such pretty much all labs must adhere to this standard and indeed are seen to be technically competent once they adhere to the standards. Testing for Cannabinoids We’ve been testing for cannabinoids now for a few years on a regular basis, because of the history of cannabis and prohibition and other issues the fact remains that the testing regimens are largely left to the individual lab managers in order to come up with a testing procedure. As such, you can hardly expect any number of labs to test and achieve the same results. What makes the results even more disparaging is that calibration against standardised organic or synthetic calibration samples is not regulated, and as we have seen some labs cannot handle controlled substances so therefore cannot calibrate against THC effectively. Lastly all labs should provide certificated testing, in which three samples are run and the results averaged, of course a “spike” easily seen such as particle contamination. Indeed quite a few of the testing houses until very recently refused to run certificated testing due to the costs involved and the trap of “low-cost” testing. Most now will run certificated testing for reasonable costs. But still we see differences between the labs.
A R TI CL E How? Because it still falls down to no set standards for the industry. The Future of Testing Back in September we at the CTA “soft launched” a partnership with The James Hutton Institute to develop an ISO standard for the testing of cannabinoids. Once which would ultimately form the backbone of cannabinoid testing and as such provide clarity and resolution to the manufacturers, sellers and consumers. In hindsight we didn’t understand just how much of a huge challenge this is…riding a wave of “we can do this” after being lulled into a false sense of security by people who had been there before… Firstly, we have to assemble a crack team of labs, a minimum of 9 labs (we’re aiming for 11) must be prepared to get involved and they have to agree to round robin testing of samples. This is relatively easy of course. We have 9 of the 11 and should have the other 2 by the end of January. Once we have that and all the labs have the same results and any irregularities investigated, they must form an official group at which point the standard gets laid out and starts to become official. Then other labs around Europe / Internationally must join in the group which becomes an official working group and share data in order to ascertain an absolute standard to the standards required by ISO and CEN. Once this has been in operation for a period “of not less than” 24 months the leading lab can apply for ratification of the standard and
is then approved. So not quite an overnight thing, but a step we are seriously engaged upon and as such committed to. One of our partners Damien Bove of Adact Medical Limited said
“There is no standard method for the testing of CBD and other cannabinoids, by that we mean there is no ISO or CEN method, but that does not mean that there are no reliable, validated and calibrated testing methods. There are at least two laboratories that are ISO17025 certified for testing cannabinoids in the UK, ADACT is one of them. Which means they have validated and assessed methods for assessing CBD levels in products and they have the documentation that can demonstrate a high level of accuracy of that testing. However, we believe that an industry sector standard is vital for the longevity of the industry and we fully stand behind the CTA’s stance on creating a new set of standards for the sector.”
Secondly, understand the product. When you see a lab, especially if its not a primary or secondary extraction, it is sometimes possible not to see the other cannabinoids present because they may be present in such small quantities that they simply don’t show accurately in testing. Indeed, any product made from distillate will almost certainly show few other cannabinoids when its mixed into the final product. Where this is the case ask to see labs of the distillate. Remember, any distillate above 85% should be classed as Novel, for two reasons, we couldn’t distil that accurately prior to 1997, and we weren’t doing so, also there isn’t anything you can do to stabilise a mixture at this level without adding in some form of stabiliser…in which case, the stabiliser should be listed as an ingredient. Be aware! Lastly, ask! There are numerous “flags” to watch out for, few smaller companies and indeed many larger ones are manufacturers, they white label from various sources, indeed there are probably only around 40 true manufacturers worldwide, extracting is an expensive business. But that’s another story.
Mike Harlington - CTA
So How Do I Know What is in a Product? Firstly, look to see if they are a CTA member, we validate the labs we see and of course we are currently testing around 4500 products from our members in conjunction with the labs we work with.

Speaking about his appointment as head of the department, Elliott said: “Mackrell. is currently leading the way in the UK when it comes to Cannabis Law and this has led to huge interest and demand in our services and expertise. “To ensure we can meet this demand I am delighted to be taking up this position as head of the team and welcoming Nick and Stephen. Cannabis companies from around the world are keenly interested in the UK and what it can offer, so it is important that they can access the legal knowledge and expertise that they require, both nationally, and internationally through our international legal network, Mackrell International.” Founded by the firm’s Managing Partner, Nigel Rowley, and closely supported by Chris Lane, the Head of Business Development, the Cannabis Law department at Mackrell. has grown considerably and is now a significant area of growth for this 180 year old legal practice. It was appointed earlier in the year by members of the UK’s CBD industry, including the Cannabis Trade Association, to challenge the European Commission’s classification of CBD as a novel food and has gone on to support many of the firm’s involved. It has also recently been appointed as advisors to The Conservative Drug Policy Reform Group (CDPRG), which is an evidence-based policy forum which promotes informed debate on drug policy reform amongst legislators through examining the evidence for change. The CDPRG is advocating for an evidence-based review of current drugs policy that questions prohibition and explores what works to improve outcomes and has received backing from several Conservative peers, including former Prime Minister, Sir John Major. Cementing the firm’s position in this market further, Keith Provins, Head of Corporate and Commercial at Mackrell. acted for skincare company ThisWorks in its acquisition by the world’s largest cannabis business Canopy Growth, as part of a move to bring unique CBD products to the UK and European market. Outside of its day-to-day work, the firm has also attended and spoken at many events in the UK and overseas, including the Hemp and CBD expo in the UK. It is due to take part in Cannatech in South Africa and MJ Biz Con in Las Vegas in the coming weeks. Looking at the firm’s expansion in the sector, Nigel Rowley added: “The last two years have been incredible and we have seen phenomenal interest in this sector and our services. We are still one of the only law firms in the UK to have a dedicated Cannabis Law department and this has led to recognition from our peers, industry leaders and the press. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for our team and this booming growth industry.”

CONSUMER CONFIDENCE IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS Consumers of CBD products have become savvy in searching out products they can trust. They know to look for lab reports, good reviews, signs of non-compliance such as overt medical claims or misleading labelling but even when a product looks legit, there is still little way of knowing if the product is what it says it is. There have been numerous reports in the media on both sides of the pond depicting the unscrupulous actions of some companies who will happily charge high prices for a bottle of hemp seed oil with absolutely no CBD content and some companies photoshopping their COA’s to adapt cannabinoid profiles, remove toxic levels of mycotoxins, heavy metals and pesticides so that they can hide the truth and increase their margins.
MAG
Both consumer and reseller confidence (0% CBD products have been pulled from major high street stores!) is down and these companies are not only damaging the reputation of the industry, they are providing regulatory departments with the ammunition to close companies down. To date, we have only heard of photoshopped COA’s coming from the US but it is only a matter of time before a consumer experiences a dangerous reaction and that will be it; game over. Do you feel like a little fish in a big pond? With the exponential growth of this industry over the past few years it can be extremely difficult to get your share of the market. You can have a great range of products and honed marketing skills, but it can still feel impossible to grow. You might look up and feel envy of those big fish, oblivious to the ripples and currents that can easily send you off course. Why is it that the big fish grow? Reputation goes a long way and these guy’s have been in the pond for a while. Consumers don’t want to have to trail through hundreds of companies to find one that they can trust. They simply want to find a company that they can trust who sell the products that they are looking for. This is why Holland and Barrett did so well when they started selling CBD products. People trust H&B and although they only had a couple of products, people knew they would be legit.
Trust – The Magic Formula for Growth How can you be confident that an organic food product is in fact organic? You look for the ‘Soil Association’ certification mark. TrustCanna is the new certification mark for the cannabis industry (previously named ‘Cannabis Products Directive’). The model was proposed by government regulators, has been consulted upon with the competent authorities and is intended to be passed to government as a regulatory body once a working model can be demonstrated. As with any project which requires governmental consultation, these projects take time to develop but we now have the magic formula to reassure regulatory bodies; provide growers, processors, manufacturers and sellers with a system to ensure quality and compliance from seed to finished product and a certification mark which links to the website so that consumers can easily identify companies and products that are safe, legal and “as described”. This seal and authorisation number will be clearly displayed on the packaging of any cannabis products that are TrustCanna certified. You can verify the status of any product and obtain the laboratory reports on the TrustCanna site by searching for the authorisation number.
A R TI CL E
How to Register
Novel Foods Directive:
TrustCanna products are regulated in line with the risk that is considered proportional to the industry sectors. The regulatory frameworks that are in place to regulate safety of food, vapes, cosmetics etc, should continue to perform that function. TrustCanna simply sets a benchmark that all authorised products meet the requirement of those regulations.
Until January 2019, only CBD food products containing CBD Isolate (a CBD extract containing 85%+ CBD content by weight) was considered a Novel Food as isolate cannot be considered a full botanical extract as a specific compound has been specifically targeted. Following the demands of several EU states to change the Novel Foods register, the register was changed in January 2019 to include all extracts containing cannabinoids. Considering the facts that the Novel Foods Directive is guidance opposed to law and that consultation is ongoing whilst most EU states continue to market these products and the fact that the World Health Organisation, the most respected and influential organisation that guides global policies on health have assessed and concluded that CBD is safe for humans and animals, TrustCanna has decided to accept CBD food products at this time as long as they don’t contain isolated cannabinoids.
As such, a simple register of cannabis business operators (CBO’s) and products, backed up with a self-declaration application and approvals process provides the required information to make informed approval decisions on a business and products. Simply visit the TrustCanna website: www.trustcanna.org/become-certified and click on the link to the portal registration. The ‘responsible person’ submits their name and email and they will receive a link to create a password. They will then have access to the portal. Registering your company Registering your company is easy and quick. Sign up to the portal (as described above) and you will need the following information: Details of the responsible person Details of the business Details of your local authority (FBO registration evidence) Declaration Registering your products You can then add details of your products: Supply chain (supplier info, extract, cannabinoid profile, lab reports) Product info (type, name, image, packaging, ingredients, volume, extract, cannabinoid profile) Final lab reports
THC and Other Controlled Substance Limits Naturally Occurring in Industrial Hemp: In January 2019, the World Health Organisation, following their assessment in the safety of CBD in relation to drug abuse and dependency, recommended to the United Nations that all cannabis products containing less than 0.2% THC should be completely removed from all drug scheduling internationally. It is anticipated that a positive outcome will emerge from the United Nation’s 63rd Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) session in March of this year where 53 countries will vote. Due to the fact that international law is expected to change within the next few months and it is anticipated that the Home Office will update the 1971/2001 MoDA and hemp licencing regime shortly thereafter to secure the security and health of UK citizens, farmers, industry, economy, soil health, food production and our environment as they are legally obliged, we will begin a consultancy process with the Home Office alongside key interested parties to
support this transition. During this consultation process, TrustCanna will accept product registrations for products containing up to 0.2% naturally occurring controlled substances derived from Cannabis sativa L. grown under licence as industrial hemp. These products will be given a green certification mark (opposed to the blue mark for THC free products) so that consumers can differentiate if they have concerns in regard to drug testing. Please note that companies may need to remove these products from the TrustCanna register if the vote and consultation is unsuccessful. Moving with the Times It has always been the intention that TrustCanna will prepare for future legislative changes and provision of certification will be made for cannabis products intended for medicinal and recreational use as legislation permits. It is fundamentally important that consumers continue to have access to safe regulated products. This will also potentially include a provision of IAG for ‘grow your own’ so that cannabis can be grown, extracted and consumed safely. Right Time, Right Place As our PR campaign grows, consumers will be looking for the TrustCanna certification mark. If you want your share in the marketplace it is simple economics: If you are quick, you have the opportunity to become one of the second-generation ‘big fish’ by registering early. Don’t get left behind, register with TrustCanna today and be the best in consumer confidence. For more information, please visit: www.trustcanna.org info@trustcanna.org

Dr. Dani Gordon With the UK’s leading cannabis and CBD expert! So Dr Dani, you’ve seen a meteoric rise in the UK cannabis and CBD space in 2019. For those readers and new visitors to the Expo who don’t know, can you start by introducing yourself? Welcome to the Expo! So my name is Dr Dani Gordon and I am a Canadian medical doctor and for years I ran a cannabis medicine chronic disease referral clinic in Canada. I am also a British citizen so since the new cannabis medicine legislation got passed in November 2018 I have been fortunate to be able to share my years of experience prescribing medical cannabis and with CBD for wellness uses in the UK. I have been speaking at conferences, training the first UK cannabis doctors, setting up clinics, consulting and helping with a number of non profits like the UK Medical Cannabis

Clinicians Society, Drug Science and the Conservative Drug policy reform group and I had the chance to speak in Vienna at the UN Commission on Narcotic drugs convention reception and help draft a letter to UN delegates educating them about the importance of rescheduling cannabis internationally for medical use when they take a final on this next Month (March 2020). It has been a busy year! So after a very successful year of raising awareness for our industry in 2019, we understand you have now written your own book, and secured a publishing deal on it? Can you give us the Title and release date for this? Yes! It is called the CBD Bible and I was lucky enough to get publishing deals
with the worlds largest publishers (Hachette and Harper Collins) in the UK, USA, Canada, Spain and Poland so far. It is released in the UK in June, pre-orders are available now on amazon. It’s where I spill all my tips and tricks about both medical cannabis and cbd wellness for different topic and subject areas, in plain english so it’s understandable and usable information. How long did it take you to work on the book, and can you tell us a little bit about the journey you went on to complete it? I always find this one a tricky one to answer, as much of the CBD Bible has been in brain for the last few years, as I have immersed in treating patients with cannabis medicines and also with advising my
A R TI CL E You are obviously a wellness specialist, and followers of your social media accounts will know that you’re constantly battling the ‘run down’ feeling that the majority of the public experience with a busy lifestyle. What do you think are the most important routines or practices that you find integral to keeping well yourself?
wellness clients about CBD. But putting together the manuscript, which is very detailed and extensively referenced (the references and research studies were so long they had to kept for the kindle version only and also I will have them on my blog online it looks like!) and took me around 3 months to pen the first draft. I’m currently finishing the second draft as I write this for final submission to the UK and international teams to go to print as the ‘final version’ soon after a final spelling and grammar edit-it’s quite the process I have learned but I love writing so it’s been mostly enjoyable. You obviously are traveling to lots of different shows and conferences, as well as multiple doctor/clinician projects you’ve been involved in in the past year. Did your experiences and people you’ve met along the way impact the way the book came out? I certainly met amazing friends, colleagues, patients and advocates along my travels and speaking engagements who have all contributed greatly to this field and in the last 18 months I have made many new friends from the cannabis medicine and cbd community both here in the UK and internationally. Two of the personal stories of UK patients who have become advocates for medical cannabis made it into the book, one under his name (Alfie) and his mum Hannah Deacon, who has become a dear friend and colleague at the MCCS which we help run with Professor Barnes, another amazing light here in the UK for medical cannabis access. The other patient story is anonymous and all identifying details removed because they are still trying to get legal access to medical cannabis for their serious medical condition, it’s been the only thing that has helped them with their symptom control, despite their doctos still refusing to acknowledge it, and they also use cbd as well. I was so moved by their story I had to include a version of it. What is the main focus of the book project? It is broken down into 2 parts: Part one is all about the plant itself, the science-y bits, the history of cbd and medical cannabis
and how to use it (Both CBD and medical cannabis under medical guidance of course and where legal!) and cautions and safety areas to be aware of. Part 2 is broken down by topic area: Anxiety, Brain Health, sleep, stress & burnout, Gut Health, Womens health, even a sex and libido chapter and of course I had to include epilespy. So someone who just cares about sleep and anxiety can go directly to those bits and get what they need or if you are really interested in the deeper details, you can read the whole thing through. Who do you think will benefit most from reading it? Or is this a read everyone can enjoy? This book is for everyone and anyone interested or curious about CBD and/or medical cannabis. It is a book you can buy for your mum or grandmum with arthritis and can sit on their shelf without looking like a ‘drug’ book or out of place. It is also meant for anyone struggling with the common issues of modern life: stress, burnout, sleep, anxiety, IBS/gut issues and any number of conditions where I have used medical cannabis to help successfully in my patients, often where drugs were not enough or stopped working.
It’s the small simple things that I find are most powerful. 10 minutes of a meditation practice once (and then if you can, eventually make it twice!) a day, getting outside in nature, connecting with family and friends and prioritising sleep. I also take a variety of supplements (including CBD!) which I feel also gives me an extra boost or edge but they are not a replacement for sleep and stress reduction or eating well. As far as diet goes, I’m a moderation advocate-I eat a whole foods, mostly organic mediterranean diet but I do cheat sometimes--croissants on Sundays and a bit of dark chocolate most days are my go-to and never beat myself up about ‘food perfection.’ The SPRING2020 Expo is obviously taking place this Feb 29th-Mar 1st, 2020 and of course we’re very happy to have you take to the seminar stage again. Can you tell us a little more about what you’ll be speaking about this time? I am so excited to come back these was my favourite events last year! I will be speaking about CBD wellness and medical cannabis and focus in on the most popular areas people want to use these things for, such as anxiety, stress, sleep, gut health, period pain, brain health and sex and libido where many products are popping up in the CBD world. I will be dispelling some myths and sharing the latest research and also some of my patient stories. Then I love doing a live Q and A at the end which is my favourite part because it’s totally unscripted and I always get some great questions and discussion going! Thankyou Dr Dani for speaking with you. We are certainly looking forward to seeing you at the nex Hemp & CBD Expo.
Putting the book aside for a moment, Can you give us an update on what else you’re working on and projects you’re involved with as we kick off 2020? This year, I am continuing my work with physician education through my involvement with Drug Science’s project 2021 and of course helping run the MCCS as the Vice Chair with our Chair Prof Barnes and the great team of doctors and Hannah Deacon, as well as being involved as the co-founder of a new GP support network started by my colleague and friend Dr. Leon Barron, where we want to provide a safe space for GPs to learn about and discuss medical cannabis for any who is curious. I’m also continuing with some drug policy work with a few government groups and working on my second book as well as a TV show, and launching a few new projects aiming to help patients get healthier that will involve both wellness as well as medical services, the big reveal may be in time for the Expo where hopefully I can share more soon!

CIN THEB UKD
AND IRELAND: LATEST REGULATORY
DEVELOPMENTS British pharmacists are unsure of their legal position in selling CBD products, CBD-Intel discovers. In Ireland, meanwhile, authorities have approved two CBD-based medicines. The trade body representing independent pharmacists in the UK says that Home Office guidance about CBD is unclear. The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has called on the Home Office – the government department responsible for law and order – to make it clear whether and how pharmacists can stock products containing CBD on their shelves. However, the association declined to give CBD-Intel specifics of what it wanted addressed. At present, the Home Office says CBD in its purest form is not covered by either the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 or the Misuse of Drugs Regulations of 2001 and is therefore a legal substance. However, it also says that if a product contained THC or other controlled substances “unintentionally or otherwise” then it would be a controlled substance, and therefore not legal to sell. The guidance goes on to say: “It is our understanding that it is very difficult to isolate pure CBD, and in our experience many products in fact do not fully disclose their contents or
MAG
A R TI CL E provide a full spectrum analysis at an appropriate level of sensitivity to accurately and consistently determine their true content or control status.
“Against this background, the presumption has to be one of caution – that is, that a CBD containing product would be controlled under the MDA 1971 / MDR 2001 as a result of its other cannabinoid content.” The Home Office also pointed out that if CBD products were to claim medical benefits, then “companies may wish to contact the MHRA for their view on whether the cannabis/ cannabis extract products are additionally subject to their licensing regime and control”. The NPA’s head of advice and support services, Jasmine Shah, said the matter had been raised because “a growing number” of pharmacies were stocking CBD products, and that the organisation’s advice would be to ensure they are acting legally and in the best interests of patients – “which is the same advice we’d give about all other products sold or supplied in pharmacies”. She added: “In the case of CBD products, pharmacists should take account of current Home Office guidance, although it must be said
the current guidance is difficult to interpret. We would welcome clear, authoritative guidance that makes it easier for manufacturers, health care professionals, retailers and consumers to make informed choices, keeping everyone on the right side of the law and safe from harm.” This is not the first time the NPA has raised the issue of its members stocking, or being asked to stock, CBD. In July of 2019, it warned members that they should check the legal status of any CBD product they were selling or risk losing their indemnity insurance. Also last year, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society said that it had written to the Home Office asking for guidance on CBD products. Meanwhile, the UK’s industry body for medical cannabis backed the NPA’s stance. A spokesperson for the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis (CMC) said the association “welcomes the call for improved CBD regulations”. They added: “Our organisation and existing members are unequivocally committed to achieving novel food status via the Food Standards Agency (FSA), taking us closer to a standardised framework for a legal, safe and regulated cannabinoid industry in the UK.” Currently, CBD products are not allowed to make any claims as to any sort of medical effect.
The bottom line is that while CBD has become a mainstay of health food stores recently, there has been a history of ambiguity surrounding what is and is not legal. Or really in effect there has not, but companies do not want to miss out on lucrative sales, given the minimal threat of enforcement action. UK authorities have made numerous CBD points very clear: CBD should not be in any ingestible product, including food items, supplements or drinks, as it has been listed in the EU novel food catalogue and has not yet received any sort of market authorisation.
They have also been very clear that CBD products should contain absolutely no THC. But as this is very difficult to ascertain in practice – and effectively impossible to guarantee at a commercially viable cost – the buck usually gets passed, with retailers saying it’s the responsibility of manufacturers and vice versa. All in all, the reality is that the vast majority of CBD products currently on sale in the UK carry some form of enforcement risk if regulators chose. But as that would leave many out of a potential new revenue stream, associations instead ask for “clarity” when what they really
M A G
A R TI C LE
mean is “leniency”– or an official announcement of regulations to match the reality on the ground, which is that CBD products are widely available and have thus far proven to be completely safe from regulatory action.
IRISH OK FOR CBD PRODUCTS The Irish government has given approval to two medicines as it starts its medical cannabis programme. Patients in Ireland with spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis, intractable nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, and severe treatment resistant epilepsy will now be able to receive prescriptions for Canadian firm Aurora Cannabis’s High CBD Oil Drops and MGC Pharmaceuticals’ CannEpil under the Medical Cannabis Access Programme. The scheme, announced in June last year, will allow patients to be prescribed cannabis-based medicines for a five-year trial period. The drugs were approved under the programme in late November. Aurora contains less than 30 mg/ml THC as well as 600 mg/ml CBD. CannEpil has 100 mg/ml of CBD and less than 5 mg/ml THC.
Aurora’s chief product officer Shane Morris said he was pleased to be involved in the programme, adding: “We are very proud to be one of the first approved suppliers of medical cannabis under the MCAP. We want to acknowledge the efforts made by many people, especially the patients and doctors who have campaigned for access to these medicines. We will continue to work closely with all parties and state agencies to facilitate further availability.” Roby Zomer, co-founder and managing director of MGC Pharmaceuticals, which was founded in Australia and has its European base in Slovenia, said the Irish government’s decision was a “key achievement” which would allow the company to expand its reach. He said: “Not only does it allow MGC Pharma’s GMP-certified medical products to reach more patients in need, but can be seen as a catalyst for fast-tracking follow-on approval applications to prescribe in other EU member state countries such as Germany, Austria, Italy and France. With distribution agreements already in place across Europe, we are well positioned for a quick entry to these markets following receipt of the required approval.” Although the approval was granted in November, the companies were still required to apply for a licence to bring their drugs into Ireland. This process was not expected to take long, however, and it was expected that the first patients should be able to get their medicines around the beginning of 2020.

I am so pleased to be here today to advance this programme and help the lives of many families across the country.” The introduction of new products under medical cannabis prescription will not have a significant impact on the wider Irish consumer wellness CBD industry. n o i t n e v r e t n I y r o Regulat Cannabis is a risk sector. Like it or not, anyone operating in this industry has some appetite for commercial risk. This risk can be controlled without compromising on commercial success. Robert Jappie explains how regulatory intervention can not only be managed, but also be used to improve your business prospects. Risk and Reward Cannabis is a risk sector. Like it or not, anyone operating in this industry has some appetite for commercial risk. The risk is present because Cannabis in the UK and Europe is a nascent industry. It is new, it is exciting, and it is growing rapidly. These qualities mean that the potential rewards for successful businesses are enormous. The predicted growth for the global legal cannabis market is impressive. This opportunity for substantial reward is why we accept the commercial risk, but that doesn’t mean that we bear it easily. The risk is one of regulatory intervention. Such intervention can be frightening. The letter your business might receive from a domestic regulatory body is usually intended to scare, and even intimidate. However, if managed correctly, such regulatory interventions can be turned into an opportunity for your business to improve its compliance and develop a longstanding, positive relationship with the relevant regulators.
The Regulators Who are the regulators that have oversight of the UK cannabis sector? If you’re engaged in cultivation activities, or in handling controlled substances then you will be familiar with the Home Office Drug Licence Unit (“DLU”). This department of the Home Office deals with licencing applications, monitoring and
MAG
enforcement. Anyone who has had contact with the DLU will know that they are difficult to deal with at the best of times. They can take several weeks to respond to enquiries, and the licence application process moves slowly as a result. Post licence intervention can be sudden and heavy-handed. Note the Hempen enforcement action last year where the Home Office declined to renew their hemp cultivation licence. An intervention of that nature can be devastating to a business, and therefore the risk of such intervention must be carefully managed. If you have a CBD business and you are importing raw material or finished products from overseas then it might be the UK Border Agency (“UKBA”) that is causing you to lose sleep. Seized shipments are a regular occurrence and securing their release, once seized, is challenging. Any suspicion that your shipment has in excess of the permitted THC content will result in seizure, and it can be months before you might be able to persuade the UKBA otherwise. The Novel Food issue continues to hang over the sector like a dark cloud and although the Food Standards Agency (“FSA”) has yet to announce any formal enforcement policy, local council Trading Standards officers have been intervening on the novel food issue. If you are selling ingestible products which contain CBD in its isolated form, then you are at risk of intervention as isolate is indisputably a novel food. A visit from trading standards can be any business owner’s worst nightmare. What about the claims you make regarding your products? Consumers are buying CBD products for their medical and health benefits. However, it is prohibited to make any medicinal claims about
your products as they are not licensed as medications. I have seen several interventions by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority (“MHRA”) in respect of companies making medical claims. The MHRA takes a hard-line stance on such issues and their interventions are forceful. There has been an increase in advertising of CBD products. Buses, Magazines, Billboards and on TV, several brands are being increasingly brave in respect of where they advertise, pushing their products into the public consciousness. There has been pushback from the Advertising Standards Agency (“ASA”) in relation to these campaigns and I suspect many companies will have been dissuaded from pursuing these mainstream marketing channels as a result.
Managing Risk In my opinion, it is not possible to operate successfully (from a commercial perspective) in the Cannabis sector on a zero-risk profile. If you have no appetite for risk whatsoever then I’d respectfully suggest that this industry isn’t for you. However, there are several strategies that you can employ to reduce the risk of regulatory intervention. Join a recognised trade organisation. Yes, the fees can be annoying, but there is an inherent strength in numbers. As well as providing up to date guidance and compliance advice to members, an established trade body will often be well connected with the relevant domestic regulators, meaning that they will be the first to know when regulatory change or enforcement is in the pipeline. It can be a very powerful
A R TI CL E
defence to regulatory intervention to assert that you have been following guidance provided by an established trade body. Be well advised. Specialist legal advice can save you money in the long-term. For example, it’s much more economical to pay a lawyer to provide you with importation advice prior to your shipment entering the UK than it is to pay a lawyer to persuade the UKBA to release your seized shipment. It is a cliché, but in this industry, prevention really is better than cure. Engage with other business owners and listen to their experiences. Reading industry articles and looking at the legislation/governmental guidance is helpful, but until you have been through regulatory intervention and understood the process first-hand then it is difficult to know what to expect. You will meet many business owners who have had such experiences. Substantial knowledge can be gained by listening to your competitors and contacts who active in the industry. Attend industry events (especially the Hemp & CBD Expo) as this is where you will gain the most knowledge.
Be courageous Managing risk is important, but equally important is to change your mindset in relation to how you view regulatory intervention. I encourage my clients not to be afraid of
regulatory intervention. Regulatory contact is inevitable and as additional regulation is introduced, contact with the regulators increases in likelihood. Rather that something to be in fear of, regulatory intervention should be viewed as an opportunity. Contact from the regulators should be used as an opportunity to engage directly in order to gain as much compliance information and guidance as possible. If you receive a letter from the regulators alleging wrongdoing, do not panic. More often than not, the best course of action will be to respond in calm and clear terms with a view to opening a dialogue. If there is substance to their allegations, then you should apologise, confirm your intention to be compliant and ask for specific details on what aspects of your business require modification. Once you have made the required changes, you can update the regulator accordingly. You are now a compliant company with a good reputation in that regulator’s office. They will chalk up your engagement as a ‘win’ and they will move on. If there is no substance to their allegations, then be prepared to push back and fight your corner. There is little in the way of established precedent in this industry. Everything we do is new and relatively untested. If you believe that a regulator is taking a heavy-handed and unwarranted approach, then don’t be afraid to tell them that. Take advice and make sure your position is conveyed in a respectful and consistent manner. You may find that the regulator becomes unsure of their own position in the face of your principled stance and will seek a compromise position.
Robert Jappie Regulatory Partner Ince - incegd.com
This industry must be navigated with courage. If you already have an established business operating in the UK and Europe, then you have already shown tremendous courage in getting this far. If you are looking at the sector with a view to starting a business, then have the courage to take that next step. Be brave, be well advised, and be open to the opportunities that regulatory intervention presents.

HEMP
Industrial hemp is unbelievably versatile and is already used for paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, construction, health food, and fuel. The legendary Ford Model T was actually powered by biofuel made from hemp and contained biopolymer materials that were developed from the hemp plant also. With natural fuel resources such as gas and oil under strain in recent years attention has turned away from internal combustion engines with a view to replacing them with battery-powered electric cars. Just when you thought that the capabilities of the hemp plant had been exhausted with bio fuel! we hear the news that Hemp engineering has pulled yet another Ace out of the pack, in the form of hemp batteries. Not only this, but, if recent research is correct, batteries that could be more powerful than either their Lithium or Graphene counterparts! The potential here is incredible as is the positive impact that such a product could have on the environment.
Clarkson University, New York, discovered that waste fibers, or ‘shiv’, from hemp crops could be transformed into ‘ultrafast’ super capacitors that are ‘better than graphene’. Graphene being a unique synthetic carbon material that is lighter than foil, strong enough to be bulletproof and one of the most conductive compounds ever discovered.
What is a capacitor though you may ask? Well a capacitor is a device used to store electric charge on one or more pairs of conductors separated by an insulator. Batteries have amazing energy densities, but they are batteries that could be much more efficient and have a better lifespan when power is drawn slowly and in more powerful than either a controlled manner.
Researcher Robert Murray Smith posted a hemp battery experiment to his YouTube channel in 2016 in order to demonstrate this potential. By observing the Volts by Amps curve of both hemp and lithium their Lithium or Graphene batteries, Smith found that the power underneath the hemp cell was a value of Capacitors are therefore often used to counterparts! 31 while that of the lithium cell had a value assist batteries that are used for of just 4 which shows in the simplest of power-intensive operations in motor terms that the hemp cells outperformed the lithium cells engines, like starting a vehicle up or accelerating. The power a significantly. capacitor can hold depends directly on the material from which it is made and so materials that have high conductivities make for better This is not the only experiment or research that has been conducted capacitors. A Higher level of conductivity means more electrons, either. As far back as 2014, researchers in the US, led by Dr. Mitlin of which means improved charge density.

The power a capacitor can hold depends directly on the material from which it is made and so materials that have high conductivities make for better capacitors. A Higher level of conductivity means more electrons, which means improved charge density.
Graphene is a one atom thick version of common graphite and carbon nonmaterial. It is able to hold an impressive amount of electrons and can discharge almost instantly, providing power as quickly as it is needed. Hemp however is emerging as a great alternative as it allows the possibility for these technological advancements to be realised by using a much simpler, readily available material. It is believed that High-performance hemp-based super-capacitors could transform the way we make and use energy. The 2014 experiment in question saw Dr. Mitlin and his team “cook leftover hemp based fibre. This is the inner bark and waste part of the hemp plant that typically ends up in landfills. The fibres are transformed into carbon nano-sheets, through a process called hydrothermal synthesis. Once the bark has cooked, the lignin and the semi-cellulose is dissolved which leaves these carbon nano-sheets, which are then built into electrodes.
M A G
A R TI C LE
An ionic liquid is then added for its electrolyte and the result is a super-capacitor which operates at a broad range of temperatures and a high energy density, working down to 0c and displaying some of the best power-energy combinations reported for any carbon. These hemp-based carbon nano-sheets can allegedly outperform standard super-capacitors by nearly 200%, so proving themselves to be more than a viable alternative to graphite. Hemp may not be able to do all the things that graphene can but for energy storage, it works just as well. And it costs a fraction of the price at $500 to $1,000 a tonne in comparison to Graphene, which costs $2,000 per gram! Not only this but in further testament to its suitability, the hemp used to create the graphene-like super-capacitor is not only entirely legal to grow but also contains absolutely zero traces of THC. Many countries such as Canada, China, and the United Kingdom rely heavily on industrially grown hemp for use in clothing, jewellery, building materials, and other products.
MAG
A R TI CL E The waste fiber that is left over however is typically just sent to landfill, which is crazy considering its potential usefulness in other applications! With everything from electric cars to power tools having the ability to make use of super-capacitors, it seems quite possible that Mitlin’s experiment and subsequent discovery could pave the way to oust graphene from its reign as the gold standard of energy-storing materials. t may sound far fetched but Dr. Mitlin’s research and other evidence such as Robert Murray-Smith’s You tube experiment is garnering some real credible interest from big business. In late 2018, Texas-based electric motorcycle manufacturer “Alternet" announced that it was partnering with Dr Mitlin to develop alternative power for products of its subsidiary “ReVolt Electric Motorbikes” It has long been known that hemp biofuel is a great alternative to traditional fuel and now that we know that the hemp plant can also be used in the production of batteries the sky is the limit! It is a real possibility that we could at some point in the future see the need to extract lithium eliminated which would massively reduce the level of harm that is caused to the environment. The practical, useful applications for hemp are seemingly endless, and it is only the global prohibition of cannabis that is preventing hemp from fulfilling its full potential and improving the world we live in. Hemp materials have already been created with proven capabilities and hemp engineering continues apace despite the uncertain legality of cannabis. Lets hope that moving forward more and more people become educated on the literal and economic benefits of hemp and that the full scale of its uses are not shrouded for much longer.

THE BRITISH CBD INDUSTRY MUST STAND UP FOR ITSELF. Peter Reynolds Presiednt Cannabis Professionals
British CBD businesses need to become politically active and fight back against the sinister forces that are trying to seize control of our industry. With the new Parliament we now have the opportunity to engage our MPs to help support and drive forward our businesses. This is a role that all MPs take seriously. It is one of their key responsibilities and they will be ready to help if you approach them in the right way with a coherent message. This article explains how to get in touch with your MP and how to get them working on your behalf.
MAG
A R TI CL E The Novel Foods Scam The imminent threat is the novel foods scam. This originates from the EU and has its most significant support in the Food Standards Agency (FSA) which has become just an extension of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). However, from 11.00pm GMT on 31st January 2020, it reverts to being a UK institution, under the direct control of our own government and therefore very much open to the influence and actions of MPs. Its arrogant and overbearing attitude will be tempered, its wings clipped and its power severely curtailed. It will return to its proper role of being a servant of the British people, not of the EU overlords. Whatever your position was on Brexit, the EU and its bureaucrats are no longer popular institutions in Parliament. Your MP will readily work with you against the malign influence of the EU. And even if they are a Remainer, you still have a constitutional right
Big Business Predators Most likely the real reason is because in just over five years the CBD market has grown from zero to be worth several hundreds of millions of pounds and the big businesses that weren’t interested now want a slice of the action, preferably all of it if they can possibly manage it. Just look at who is backing the novel foods scam. In the UK that is the millionaires behind the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis (CMC) and its new trade association the Association for the Cannabinoid Industry (ACI). Recently the ACI has been trying to sign up CBD businesses as members for outrageous fees of £50,000 upwards. Unsurprisingly it hasn’t been very successful amongst the small British businesses that have built this market. Its
to engage them in supporting your business. Let’s be clear, the attempt to classify CBD as a ‘novel food’ is a scam. It has no basis in fact or evidence. The purpose of the EU’s novel foods legislation, as defined by the EU itself, is food safety and the definition of a novel food is “food that had not been consumed to a significant degree by humans in the EU before 15 May 1997”. On these crucial points, the FSA has repeatedly confirmed that it has no evidence of CBD products being unsafe, dangerous or harmful and the idea that cannabis extracts are novel (the general heading which has been added to the novel food catalogue and which includes CBD products) is manifest nonsense. Cannabis extracts, in the various ways hemp has been used as a food, have been consumed in the area now known as the EU for thousands of years. The European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) has done excellent work in collating evidence of this from as far back as the 12th Century. Download here the EIHA
members are almost exclusively either from overseas or part of very substantial publicly quoted groups of companies. They certainly aren’t the British CBD industry but that is their plan. They want to seize control of it and take it over. It’s true that the CBD market needs better regulation but this is nothing to do with the suggestion it is a novel food. We need a consistent approach to testing. We need the Human Medicines Regulations properly enforced and action taken against those businesses making unlawful medicinal claims. The MHRA is failing dismally in its duty to police this sort oif dishonest conduct. It is only government that can implement these sort of policies. The idea that the
document ‘EIHA Press Notes: Status of Hemp Extracts in Europe’. Quite why this novel foods issue has come about is open to debate. Clearly it’s not because of any genuine concern about safety. In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) published ‘Cannabidiol (CBD) Pre-Review Report’ stating “CBD is safe and well tolerated in humans (and animals), and is not associated with any negative public health effects…does not induce physical dependence and is not associated with abuse potential.” The same report also says “CBD has been demonstrated as an effective treatment for epilepsy in adults, children, and even animals, and there’s preliminary evidence that CBD could be useful in treating Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, psychosis, Parkinson’s disease, and other serious conditions.”
Cannabis Trades Association (CTA), the CMC or the ACI can become the regulator is unworkable. This is not a role that any private company can legitimately undertake. Lobbying Your MP The novel foods scam, the FSA’s and the Home Office’s interfering bureaucracies, the CMC and the ACI aren’t going away. This is why you need to engage with your MP, get them onside and at the same time gain their support for the other key issues that face our industry, namely the THC limit in industrial hemp and the ban on extracting CBD from leaves and flowers. Now is the perfect time to contact your MP. They will be just settling into their new job as
M A G
A R TI C LE the initial excitement of the new Parliament wears off. They will never be more open to you or amenable to tackling new subjects than right now. Find out who your MP is by going to Parliament’s website at this link https://members.parliament.uk/members/Co mmons. All you have to do is enter your home postcode and this will identify who your MP is and provide basic contact information. It is your home postcode you must use even if your business is based in a different constituency because it is your vote that counts and for you that your MP works. As a minimum you will now have your MP’s email address. What you need to do is send a
short email explaining that you need to arrange a meeting at the next available surgery appointment and setting out very briefly the reasons why. Meeting your MP face to face is essential. It is only by attending a meeting that you will get a proper response and be able to engage your MP effectively. Getting into long-winded, ping pong correspondence is a complete waste of time. MPs are now drowned in emails by campaign organisations and even an old fashioned letter is likely to be answered by a member of staff. You can also Google your MP’s name and you’ll probably find they have their own website. Often this will provide a phone number or a constituency email address to
book a surgery appointment, so go ahead and do just that. Many MPs will have staff members who are in place to protect them and try to filter which requests for a meeting are important, so this is something you may have to work to get past. Be polite but firm and insistent. You have a right to be seen by your MP and don’t be shy of asserting it. Quite seriously this could be one of the most important business meetings you ever have. Give it the priority and importance it deserves. If you are asked to write in explaining what you want to discuss then go no further than the template email set out below.
Template Email Dear XXX, Please can we arrange a meeting to discuss a number of issues concerning my business? We have been in business since XXXX and now employ X people. We supply CBD products as food supplements. This is a market that has grown from zero to hundreds of millions in just a few years. There is a serious lack of regulation but recent heavy handed moves by the EU have created a lot of uncertainty. Now we are leaving the EU it’s important that the Food Standards Agency steps up to the mark and starts implementing some sensible policies. There are also other issues that are holding back the British CBD industry. I’d be grateful for your time to talk these through and I hope you will be able to get some answers for me. Ministers in the Home Office, the Department of Health and DEFRA all have a role to play and it’s unclear how best to make progress. I look forward to meeting with you as soon as possible. Yours sincerely,
The Meeting Most MPs hold surgeries on Fridays or Saturdays. When you get an appointment you’re likely to be allocated only 10 or 15 minutes, so it’s important to be well prepared. There will usually be an assistant present who will take notes. Start by explaining the background to your business, how you came to set it up and how it makes a contribution to the local community. Give some brief examples or case studies of how your products have helped people. Be careful not to make overblown medicinal claims or suggest that CBD is some kind of miracle cure but explain how safe it is, particularly by reference to the WHO report. Explain how a year ago the FSA suddenly announced the novel foods listing and that the whole industry has been facing uncertainty ever since. Explain that the FSA has been threatening to seize products and behaving as
MAG
if the novel foods listing is law when it is only advisory. Explain how every day you fear the arrival of a Trading Standards officer who may try to close your business down. Explain how the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 prevents British farmers from extracting CBD from the leaves and flowers of industrial hemp even though it is a legal product and this means that all CBD has to be imported from abroad. Emphasise that you understand the law is there to protect people from dangerous drugs but that there is no danger from hemp or CBD and in this area the law is out of date and damaging British business and agriculture Explain how the EU only allows industrial hemp cultivars containing a maximum of 0.2% THC whereas in the rest of the world the limit is 0.3%. The 0.1% makes no difference at all except that it prevents the use of many cultivars which contain higher levels of CBD. It is a pointless law which creates this problem for no reason.
Be very specific in asking your MP what you want them to do. This should be to write to the ministers concerned on your behalf and ask for answers. Whichever issue is most important to you, make this clear and ask if your MP can arrange for you to meet the minister concerned to discuss it. Register Your Lobbying Effort As a final step, please email CannaPro to register that you have met with your MP. We will maintain a database of all MPs who have been lobbied and use it to guide further campaigning. Send a brief report of your meeting to mplobby@cannapro-uk.org

GOLDEN RULES FOR AN EFFECTIVE LOGO Will Your Logo Pass The Test? Creating a unique timeless logo design for your cannabis business might seem like an easy endeavour. Slap “logo designer” into Google and you’ll be presented with a load of options from “free” logo makers to Fiverr. Websites where students and amateurs can create you a cheap design with little to no thought on your industry, target audience or how your design will be used. Your logo design should be more than just a pretty picture. It requires research and a considerable investment of time to get right. Your logo design helps people identify your business on the street and online. So, let's make sure you get it right the first time with these three simple rules.
MAG
A R TI CL E
1. Is Your Logo Simple? Firstly, your brand's logo must be simple. Don’t have fancy gradients, illustrations or details that will get lost when you shrink it down to a tiny format. Simplicity means you can replicate the design on any surface and size without worrying about losing its unique visual elements. It should also be simple enough to work in your brand’s colour palette and in black and white. At Inferno, as part of our design process, I ensure all logo designs work in solid black first and then add colour. Although people are spending more time on digital screens, there will always be a time where your logo needs to be displayed in a single colour.
It should also be simple enough to work in your brand’s colour palette and in black and white. At Inferno, as part of our design process, I ensure all logo designs work in solid black first and then add colour. Although people are spending more time on digital screens, there will always be a time where your logo needs to be displayed in a single colour.
If you start off with gradients, transparency and many colours in your design, it will be harder to adjust to meet new applications you have not considered previously. Whilst a heavily illustrated design might look incredible on a large billboard, you’ll lose all that detail on an app icon, business card, or piece of packaging. Remember to consider all the applications your logo design will have now and in the future before committing to the design.
M A G
A R TI C LE
2. Is Your Logo Memorable? Your logo must be memorable. If your logo design blends in with your competition, your customers won’t be able to recognise your brand in the busy marketplace. It will become a confusing mess with your brand getting lost in the noise. One of the best ways to test if your logo design is memorable is to run a survey. Ask your customers and the general public if they can identify your logo from memory, or even pick your logo out of a line-up of your competition. From this test, you'll quickly see which parts of your logo design are the most memorable and potentially whether you need to update it entirely. Brands like Adidas, Starbucks and Apple thrive under tests like this as their logo designs have very distinct design elements that none of their competitors are using.
MAG
Look at your current logo design and see how it compares to your nearest competition. If you were new to the world of cannabis and CBD, would you be able to tell the two logos apart? Or would it be confusing to remember which brand was which? Your logo design needs to cause a reaction in people and resonate with them whenever and wherever they interact with your brand. There cannot be any chance of it being similar to your competition, especially with the influx of new businesses in the cannabis industry every month.
A R TI CL E
3. Is Your Logo Appropriate? Finally, your logo must be appropriate. Now, before you jump ahead, this doesn’t mean because you’re in cannabis it should be a leaf. But, it means it should reflect words people associate with your brand’s personality, culture and industry. For example, if you were setting up a CBD oils brand targeted at professional athletes, your logo would need to feel dynamic, fast and confident. Whereas, if you ran a medicinal cannabis business, your logo might need to feel clean, clinical and welcoming to be appropriate for your brand.
When I design logos, I use research from workshops I have conducted with my clients and also my expertise as a designer to create the most effective symbol. Using a mixture of known characteristics from my client's industry alongside their brand’s personality and goals to find a perfect fit.
This third rule is by far the hardest to abide by as it relies heavily on what you want your logo to say about your brand, what your customers associate with your brand and your own gut feeling.
It's a balancing act but, when you’ve found the perfect design it will align with the rest of your brand, providing you with a consistent look and feel whenever customers come into contact with your brand.
(You can read my article on why your logo shouldn't be a cannabis leaf in the Winter 2019 issue.)

Test Your Logo Should one of these three areas be out of balance and your logo is memorable but very complex, you’ll run into problems later. Alternatively, if your logo is too simple it won’t be memorable or easy for your customers to identify you against other cannabis or CBD brands. Ultimately, if your logo does not resonate with your target market it may alienate or confuse potential future clients and customers. Try taking your current logo design, or the idea you have in mind, and ask yourself if it works well on all the applications you use daily. Is it appropriate for your brand or are you using it because it's similar to what everyone else is doing? Are you sure it truly reflects your brand and your mission?

CBD cooking
properly
CBD can be a bit of a fickle ingredient when it comes to temperatures. Warming the oil can increase CBD’s effectiveness, but higher temperatures can kill some of the active components. CBD will begin to evaporate at temperatures higher than 320 to 356 degrees Fahrenheit.
When you’re not using your CBD oil, make sure you keep it in a cool, dark place. Cannabinoids are naturally sensitive to heat and light, leading to overall degradation in potency and quality. Degraded CBD oil will not be as effective and may impart more bitter, unpleasant flavours into your recipes.
Do not place your CBD oil on direct heat. Heating the oil at too high temperatures can result in the loss of terpenes, which are compounds that work in conjunction with CBD to increase its overall effects. Heating CBD too high also tends to bring out more of its bitterness.
Stick with more refined CBD oils: Filtered, decarboxylated, and other more refined forms of CBD oils tend to work well with all cooking applications. Less refined oils may leave an unpleasant aftertaste, especially if you are working with more herb-heavy recipes.
Start small, don’t use too
Less refined CBD oil pairs
much CBD
better with strong flavours
When you first start cooking with CBD oil, it’s far too easy to add too much CBD to a recipe, which usually leads to bad flavours, wasted oil, and too much of the compound’s effects. Less is more, at least when you’re starting out. Along with the CBD serving size, consider starting with smaller batches. If the dish turns out good, then you can prepare the recipe again with a larger batch. This will also help you get more comfortable with different CBD serving sizes, allowing you to make alterations with future recipes so that you can get the most out of your CBD edibles.
All that said, less-refined or lower quality oils can still be useful in recipes featuring strong flavours, like chocolate or spices. Unfiltered CBD oils also tend to contain more vitamins and helpful amino acids than their filtered counterparts.
Ingredients:
- 5 eggs - 1 can of organic kidney beans - 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract -1 teaspoon baking powder - ½ teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda - 4 tablespoons of hemp seed oil (I used Good Hemp) - 2 tablespoons of maple syrup - 1 ½ scoop of cacao Hemp protein powder (I used Raised Spirit)
distributed throughout the batch so that every bite offers equal potency.

Cooking with CBD is better than drizzling CBD It’s always recommended that you mix the oil into your ingredients for optimal flavours, but if you are in a rush, you can drizzle the oil directly onto your food. It won’t taste as good, but you can still get the desired effects. Above all, have fun! As you get more familiar with using CBD oil in your cooking, you can adjust recipes and create custom dishes of your own that taste great and offer the benefits of CBD. I’ve written my own CBD Hemp recipe book, available via my website. flawsomejem.com

THE HEMP CLOTHES ON YOUR BACK
Cultiva Clothing Reveals the true future of eco-repsonsible clothing. Hemp Textile History Hemp textiles has been used in history for centuries. It is thought that hemp has been one of the earliest cultivated plants for textile fiber known to humanity. Historians believed that this plant was used in Europe in approximately 1,200 BC. After then, it spread throughout the ancient world. A few examples from early discoveries includes hemp cloth from ancient Mesopotamia found from 8,000 BC., the Chinese work of the Sung dynasty produced by Lu Shi in 500 AD and Emperor Shen Nung who lived the the 28th century BC who was also thought to have taught his people to cultivate hemp for cloth. When it comes to the British history, in 1535 Henry VIII passed an act condoning all landowners to sow 1/4 of an acre, or they would be fined. During this period hemp was a major crop to the point where 80% of clothing was made from hemp textiles up to the early 1900’s. By the 17th century the word ‘canvas’ was discovered during naval development when local ship production took place. Sails were named after the word cannabis due to its connection to its cousin industrial hemp. There were also jobs for rope walkers to produce thick coarse ropes to embed sails as the material was more rot resistant and coped well with the salt water.
What is the situation today? There is a movement to see the hemp fibre industry develop as pressures for ecological methods and materials are now required more than ever to help combat the climate crisis. We see companies such as Levi’s and Lego who last year announced that their future products will contain hemp. Bio-composites, building materials, plastics, textiles and paper are now industries which are looking for alternative materials. When it comes to Cultiva Clothing, our mission is to pioneer an industry which is built with a strong supply chain to cope with the high demand for fashionable garments. We might have used this natural material for generations to clothe humanity but traditional craft methods do not cut it for mass production. Most of us are still competing with China’s low production prices. This is a country which has been one of the longest cultivators of industrial hemp for over 6,000 years. So, the challenge here is to fight fast fashion by getting consumers to save and pay a bit more for a good quality product. Unfortunately, in some respects, we have to pay our way out of this climate crisis. Currently it is the middle class who have the
MAG
Hemp uses one third of the water that cotton does
A R TI CL E disposable income to do this as environmentally conscious products are highly priced. We will be bringing schemes in soon to make these types of products accessible for most people. We believe this is very important to allow the shift into alternative materials to happen a lot quicker than predicted. Not only this but we have considered the entire circular loop life cycle of hemp textiles as we understand its full environmental impact, ethical production and its life after use. Did you know…? 1.76 million tonnes of raw material enters the British clothing industry every year with a third of it becoming waste (Valuing our Clothes report, 2012). The Waste and Resources Action Programme reported £140m worth of clothes enter the landfill each year. Most of these clothes include an element of synthetic yarn. The synthetic industry is produced using intensive carbon processes relying on the petrochemical industry and fossil fuel extraction. These fibres are not biodegradable and are a major contributing factor to plastic micro-fibres shedding which is polluting our water and air. Therefore, natural fibres offer a biodegradable capabilitynot leaving any textiles left in landfills to decompose over hundreds of years. One of the most devastating disasters which has been caused by the fashion industry was the disappearance of the Aral Sea found in Central Asia. It was once known to be the world’s fourth largest lake. The water had been used intensively to irrigate fields needed for the Uzbek cotton industry. As water becomes more scarce and polluted, we need to see more natural materials which do consume less resources. Hemp uses one third of the water that cotton does and as a bioremediation crop, it will actually put nutrients back into the ground. This type of crop will offer a high fibre content per acre without the need of pesticides and herbicides which has also degraded the land. Our products are a worthy carbon capture. Through carbon cycle, we see this atom processed through photosynthesis which in turn will produce the biological structure of the plant; proteins, fats and carbohydrates. So, there we have it. You can’t fault industrial hemp really when you observe the whole picture and its impact in fashion. We see a product that do not compromise fashion for sustainability. This strong fibrous raw material which does not only promote longevity can also offer many solutions for some of the most polluting issues we face today. In turn this will largely reduce greenhouse gases around the world if we can utilise this plant with ecological processes. It is important that we remember the history of hemp textiles and understand its value for a future industry with exciting prospects ahead.

MEET THE MUMS SHAPING THE CBD INDUSTRY FROM THEIR KITCHEN’S
In January 2018, Hannabis was born. This stemmed from my passion to educate others on the benefits of CBD and the versatility of the cannabis plant, whilst still being at home to provide for, and enjoy my family. I originally became involved with the CBD industry in early 2018, I’d partnered with multiple companies over 18 months, trying to find the right one for me. After attending the first HEMP & CBD Expo in March 2019, and some coaxing from my soon to be business partner (unbeknown to us at the time) I decided that if I wanted something done right then I should just do it myself. Hannabis became officially ‘born’ in January 2019 when I registered Hannabis as an official company and no longer just a blog. - Hannah Wenn
I
n a short amount of time it became clear that two minds would be better than one, and I teamed up with graphic designer Nicole Gore to push Hannabis to its full potential. We instantly began planning to launch our own range of CBD products, which released in June 2019, with at least one new product release every month since. In the months that followed, Hannabis quickly grew into a free affiliate programme open to anyone and everyone interested in starting their own CBD business from home. A couple of month’s had passed, and as Hannabis began to receive more feedback, we added more products. We included an
MAG
original clothing range inspired by the CBD and Cannabis industry (designed by us), a number of self-development courses, spiritual items, and a growing number of bespoke handmade CBD cosmetic products. – including the UK’s first CBD shampoo bar, hopes to encourage customers to reduce their plastic waste and become more consciously aware of their consumer impact. The Hannabis branding was born from our very own personalities. We’re everyday mum’s of two toddlers each, balancing family, business and being absolute queens in our own right. We created our crystal
crown wearing queen as symbol of women empowerment, amongst what we have found to be a very male dominant industry. It quickly became clear that this very niche style of branding was going to make us stand out from the crowd. Our ethos is inclusively about being one; with ourselves, with each other and with the world that surrounds us. We protect the lives we have been given and the world we live in by making everything as eco-friendly & recycling everything possible. Being a part of Hannabis means supporting, uplifting, and empowering one another to be happy, love ourselves and enjoy life!
A R TI CL E
Affiliates partnered with Hannabis have become like family (many of which have been growing with us since the very beginning) and we often find ourselves creating additional free content based on what they need support in throughout both their businesses and day-to-day lives. Every member receives access to extensive training, 24 hour support from each other via an online chatgroup, 1-to-1 support from their uplines, our regional managers and ourselves. There is no end of support through Hannabis, proving increasingly helpful to those who suffer from chronic illnesses, who often find
themselves stuck at home unable to do much, or reach out to lots of people and other mum’s who are trying to make an extra income around young children. The training and support we provide aims to help them grow their own businesses and dispel the misconceptions about cannabinoids, in order to change the discourse surrounding the cannabis industry. Hannabis inspires individuals to follow their own dreams, and have encouraged some of the affiliates to make their own products, teaching them how, and supporting them through the whole process.
As our affiliate program has expanded over the months we’ve come to realise, like many others in the industry, that some of those entering the industry don’t always have much knowledge of Cannabis, CBD and the benefits of cannabinoids. If we are having ‘newbies’ join us daily with little to no knowledge of CBD, imagine how many others have joined the industry with absolutely no clue. It is because of this we started We.CAN.nabidiol as a sister company to Hannabis where we focus on creating a solely educational platform. While we already share a lot of our knowledge with our Hannabis audience we’re keen to have
M A G
A R TI C LE We.CAN.nabidiol and all of the educational content we’ve put together under its own umbrella. We didn’t want it to be seen as a marketing tactic for Hannabis, but instead its own stand-alone platform. Having had some time to witness the massive growth within the industry in such a short amount of time, we believe that the only way this industry is going to expand in a safe and sustainable way, is by educating as many people as we can about CBD and Cannabis as a whole. On our We.CAN.nabidiol website you will find lots of educational blog posts surrounding hemp, cannabis and CBD; as well information about the rules and regulations of the CBD industry from seed to sale here in the UK. Because it can be very confusing for those new to industry to distinguish between the US and UK regulations, We are also in the process of creating a “CBD Basics” course to help newcomers and veterans of the industry to excel or adapt their own businesses. Work within the current guidelines of the industry, and provide what has been commonly agreed as high quality, educational information to their own audiences. We hope to help diminish the number of companies slowly destroying the industry before it’s had any real chance to begin. We are currently reaching out to fellow activists, businesses, and leaders in the industry, in the hopes that they will back our course and what we hope to achieve with it. We are still surprised to see big CBD brands with non-compliant products. We know we cannot put a stop to it ourselves. Instead, we plan to be a part of educating the next generation of CBD sellers, to do it the right way, and educate the people buying the products so they know who to trust. We believe there isn’t much to being a compliant CBD company, if two mum’s, living over 100 miles apart , and working from their kitchens, can keep track of not only Hannabis, but of every single one of our affiliates. Larger CBD companies really have no excuse. There are only a few rules to follow in the UK, so if a company can’t abide by them, what else are they doing under the radar. If providing this education gives someone who already owns a CBD business (and are maybe not aware of all the rules) a chance to put things right then we know what we are doing is right. We.CAN.nabidiol is here to make waves,
MAG
educate, advocate & evaluate. We push to have official regulations in place, to filter out the people that are selling illegal products, or are just jumping at the opportunity to get into an extremely fast growing industry. We truly believe that all product based companies should be registered with a governing body (such as the Cannabis Trades Association), all consumable products should be 3rd party lab tested & confirmed by the governing body they are registered with, as well as having all of their websites checked over on a regular basis. In our hopes to further educate others we also recently launched a podcast called We.Hannabis (combining both Hannabis and We.CAN.abidiol) as part of a twice-weekly podcast. Every other week landing on the 13th of every month at around 8pm, we record a live interactive podcast on our Facebook page where we aim to educate listeners on CBD and Cannabis. We also discuss relevant topics from the media. Doing it live has helped us connect with our audience on a whole new level, answering questions instantly, and discussing different points of view on a range of relative topics. All in all, Hannabis is a truly unique company within the industry. Our message is different to many others, and our transparency has allowed both our affiliates and customers to feel at ease with the products we offer, and the information we provide. Our branding allows us to stand out from the crowd and reach people that might not have previously thought about joining the industry or even trying CBD before. We do what we can to support the Cannabis Activists as much as we do anyone else, and we’re constantly finding new and innovative ways to help them reach new audiences and aid them in spreading their own important messages. Hannabis is about aiding everyone in the industry, from seed to sale, so that we can lift the entire industry together, and not just leverage the parts of it that we know would make us more profit. We think it is for this reason Hannabis was recently nominated for the GHP Medical Cannabis Award 2019 which we are awaiting to hear the results from.

WE THE UNDERSIGNED 2020 UPDATES Hi there folks, Happy 2020! I hope you're as well as can be and life is treating you well. Since the last update, during 2019 WTU have represented at many cannabis related events including Borofest, the CBD hemp Expo at the NEC, Product Earth, the cannabis education area at Know your Roots eco fest and other localised events. The WTU team have begun to gather the evidence required for the barrister review, but unfortunately circumstances beyond our control have caused delay, but we are getting back on track again and hope to soon present the WTU evidence to the Barrister for their review and advice. The crowd Justice fundraiser is live again, so if you are able to spare a little towards the legal fees to make a challenge against the government's political policy of cannabis prohibition, please pledge what you are able and why not join the WTU Facebook community group for more regular updates, interaction and support from our community? The only reason people of colour, women and the LGBT community have won their rights, freedom and some degree of equality is because they shook of their fear and united as one oppressed community fighting for their fundamental human rights. It is time for the
MAG
CannaCommunity to take a leaf out of the history book and STAND UP FOR OUR RIGHTS! The inspirational campaigner JJ St. Clements managed to organise a courtside support team to attend the Gibson's case, having travelled hundreds of miles to be there. A truly amazing gesture that will now be done for all cases possible with a support team doing all they can to support victims of this inhumane law during their trial. It could be any one of us next and the time has come to stand together as one united community, to shake off the shackles of fear, instead of hiding in the shadows in fear. Subsequently, JJ has now founded the Court Support Facebook group, empowering the too long oppressed CannaCommunity to step up in support of the members of our community who are being attacked by this false law. If you are facing charges or would like to support others, please join the group. The WTU community has also been trying hard, in as many ways as we could, to support Mark and Lezley Gibson their fight for justice. The author Robert Ledderman donated to the WTU 100 copies of his Book "Cannabis" to raise funds, which we then gave away in return for any donations made to the Gibson's legal fund. The veteran human rights campaigner and author Alun Buffry created a compilation of poems from a variety of
campaigners to create the book "Inside my Hat and Other Heads", available from Amazon with free delivery for £10.01, with £3.50 from each copy sold being pledged to the Gibson's legal fund. Now that the Gibson's have been acquitted, any further funds raised will be pledged to the WTU legal fund to support our case. Why did the CPS leave it until the last moments to decide it is not in the public interest to prosecute the Gibson’s? Perhaps it was to try and test their nerve to call their bluff in the hope the Gibson’s would crumble under the threats of prison and pressure of prosecution? Regardless, the Gibson’s held their nerve, kept strong and kept to their truth and were acquitted. The CannaCommunity resounded with applause and cheers at what seemed at first a monumental victory; that the right to a private life in our pursuit of our best health, well-being and happiness to finally be respected and for people to have the right to home grow their own cannabis for their own medical use. However, what we witnessed on the 6th of January was, perhaps, some shrewd strategizing by the Crown Prosecution Service. The closing statements made reference to the
A R TI CL E fact the CPS only decided it was not in the public interest to prosecute the Gibson's because they are now accessing a private prescription of cannabis for medical purposes at full cost! Furthermore, they stated that if the Gibson's were to repeat their actions and break the law again, they would face the ordeal of trial and potential prosecution all over again. As will any and all who choose to cultivate cannabis, without having purchased a special licence from the home secretary. This beggars the question, Exactly WHEN is it in the public interest to prosecute people who choose to home grow cannabis to maintain their health or that of their loved ones, as it is more financially sustainable than purchasing from the pharmaceutical industry or safer than the unlicensed cannabis market?
The WTU intend to expand that question to include the adult usage of cannabis regardless of the purpose of the consumer, whether for nutritional, therapeutic, creative, spiritual or relaxational purposes; where is the harm? Especially when compared with the recreational drug alcohol; when exactly is it in the Public Interest to prosecute peaceful people who choose to recognise and utilise cannabis for its broad spectrum of benefits and uses? It turns out I'm developing a bit of a bugbear! I’m getting so tired of hearing about this mythical “Medicinal cannabis”, as though it is different to “recreational cannabis”. There is only cannabis! Either cultivated under licence or unlicensed, with high or low THC (hemp), either poorly or well cultivated organically or synthetically in soil or hydroponics. The only
difference, aside from their unique cannabinoid profile, is the intent or desired purpose of the consumer and skills of the cultivator. The exact same cannabis can be utilised for all purposes, whether nutritional, medical, spiritual, creative or relaxational. Good examples of “recreational” cannabis becoming “medicinal” are Sativex made from Skunk and Bedrocan rebranded from the Jack Herer “recreational” variety. There is no such thing as medical cannabis. Only licenced or unlicensed cannabis. This is important as they beat us with their words. Cannabis used for medical purposes is the more accurate way to express it, but saying “medicinal cannabis” makes this illusionary, binary, moralistic reality between medical and so called recreational cannabis consumers.
It is time for the CannaCommunity to take a leaf out of the history book and STAND UP FOR OUR RIGHTS!
Whether a person cultivates cannabis to consume for medical, nutritional, creative, spiritual or relaxation or purposes there is no difference in the level of harm to the individual, community or Society on a whole. In fact, the only real threat created by the domestic cultivation of cannabis for private, non-commercial purposes would be the potential loss of revenues for the pharmaceutical and alcohol industries, both of whom are heavily involved in lobbying the government to maintain the status quo of cannabis prohibition. Not to protect The People but in order to protect their profits and investments. The WTU will be once again writing to the PM, Home Office, all Police Crime Commissioners & Chief Constables, MPs and Department of Public Prosecutions to
highlight the economic, social and medical discrimination caused by cannabis prohibition laws: to question EXACTLY when is it in the public interest to prosecute non-violent, peaceful people who choose to consume or cultivate cannabis for private purposes, to assuage their symptoms or alleviate the exigencies of daily life; to once again call for peace and the end of their war against the CannaCommunity and our preferred way of life. Please visit our website to read and undersign to the WTU Open Letter and join the WTU movement to help make the change happen sooner rather than later. www.wtuhq.org www.crowdjustice.com/case/no-more-govern ment-war-on-the-cannacommunity

The UK is lagging behind many countries who recognize hemp as an agricultural crop, which can provide thousands of sustainable products from its flowers, leaves, stalk, roots and seeds. Hemp is a competitive annual plant that grows well in most of the world’s climates, soil types, and altitudes and pre-dates most crops. It has been used and consumed by humans for more than 12,000 years. We believe 3 things have to happen, in order for the UK hemp industry to fulfil its potential and hemp be recognised as an essential agricultural and environmentally friendly crop: All UK Hemp Licenses to be administered by DEFRA. Harvesting, extraction, processing and transportation of the whole hemp plant. 1% permitted levels of THC Hemp in line with Switzerland.
MAG
At present the hemp license still remains within the remit of the drugs and firearms department of the Home Office, and the process of getting the license is prohibitive. There are extensive criminal checks, strict limitations on where the plant can grow, the paperwork is complicated, a compliance visit costs £1371, and it is very difficult to find funding and investment to grow the industry. These restrictions are deterring traditional farmers who see hemp as an alternative to ‘traditional’ crops, and with many more applications. Further crippling the industry, under the Home Office license, farmers are unable to harvest, extract, transport or process the leaf or the flower. It has to be destroyed on site. However, the flowers are the most profitable parts of the plant that contain the highest concentration of CBD (cannabidiol). At present all CBD extracts used in the UK are imported from Europe, China and Canada.

The hemp plant, especially the flower and leaf, helps to regulate and maintain homeostasis in the body by nourishing and maintaining our ‘Endocannabiniod’ System, responsible for our central nervous system and brain function. This vital food helps to prevent many health issues, which occur when we are deficient in cannabinoids, offering a prophylactic approach to health and wellbeing. At present the CBD market in the UK is valued at £300 million and is expected to rise to £1billion by 2025. A hectare of hemp flower is valued at around £33,000. Legalising the harvesting, extraction, transportation and processing of the leaf and flower would allow UK farmers to gain access to this potentially very lucrative market. The EU law allowance of THC in a hemp plant is 0.2% THC. In North America and the rest of the world it is 0.3% THC. In Switzerland the plant can contain up to 1% THC. The hemp plant naturally produces THC – the psychotropic compound, to protect itself from UV sunlight. A healthy dose of THC means a healthier plant. 1% THC has no psychoactive effect at this dose; however, the plant is healthier and can produce better crops and flowers. The BHA believe that these 3 policy changes would enable the UK to become the hemp hub of Europe. The UK is a world leader in research and design, but hemp has barely featured, which is a significant missed opportunity. Due to the removal of the processing subsidy as part of the EU CAP in 2013, and the above political barriers to
grow up to 4 metres tall, sequestering 11 tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide per hectare. Therefore, any product made from hemp is automatically creating a closed carbon cycle, and is biodegradable.
growth, hemp has received little to no industrial interest or funding. Since the passing of the US Hemp Farm Bill in 2018, we are beginning to see a huge resurgence in hemp manufacturing. If we don’t act soon, we could miss this vital opportunity to be part of the worldwide hemp renaissance. A domestic Industrial hemp industry can provide many economic benefits for the UK, as well as British farmers, by fuelling technological, manufacturing, and design innovations that are essential to create new market opportunities and boost the local, bio and circular economies. Hemp fibre from its stalk is stronger than steel and can be processed into building materials, textiles, cars, engines, ropes, paper, and packaging. Hempseed can replace fossil fuels to make biodegradable biofuel, plastics, solvents, and paints. Its seed is also highly nutritious containing, protein, Omega 3, 6, and 9, and Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLAs), as well as essential amino acids that we need for a balanced diet. Hemp is also an incredibly beneficial plant for the environment. It is a fast-growing summer crop and within four months, it can
Hemp requires little to no pesticides or herbicides, and has a long taproot that digs half a metre into the soil, extracting contaminates, pollutants and toxins, and helping to secure and condition the topsoil. After the nuclear spill in Chernobyl hemp was used specifically to clean up the radioactivity. Also, due to its short growing season, hemp doesn’t require significant changes to current land use. Most importantly, addressing climate change is the critical concern of our time and immediate action is required. In May 2019, the UK government was the first major nation to propose that UK will have ‘net zero’ emissions in Greenhouse gasses by 2050, offset by planting trees or sucking CO2 out of the atmosphere. Industrial hemp is an effective solution to fulfil that target. We believe an unrestricted and thriving hemp industry delivers several key goals in the UK, relevant to both agricultural and environmental policies. It can be used for a range of environmentally friendly and carbon negative products, while actively contributing to mitigating climate change. A thriving domestic hemp industry can kickstart a new green industrial revolution, boost local economies, and help to seed a brighter future in a post-Brexit landscape.

THE HYDRO CHRONICLE PODCAST OPEN UP YOUR MIND... AND HAVE A LISTEN.
Rich Hamilton has over 20 years experience in the UK hydroponics industry, he has ran a store, worked behind the scenes designing and advising on new products and is currently the national sales manager for a large horticulture distributor. Aside from his day job Rich also uses his experience and passion to fuel a series of media projects surrounding all things “Grow.

Rich travels the world visiting canna expo’s and taking in all the new innovation, regulatory changes and experiences, using these to fuel his media work and keep his content right up to date. Author of the successful 'Growers Guide' book series and a freelance writer for several national and international Indoor growing and canna news and lifestyle magazines (including ours!) Rich is now branching out further into the realm of Podcasts! His goal? to give you an informal, informative, and entertaining look at all aspects of canna culture and the indoor growing scene. The Hydro chronicle podcast is well into its first season and we caught up with Rich to find out why we should be listening.
How did this evolve into you getting in to the hydroponics industry? It was when I went to university in London that my hydroponics interest really took off, as I really liked the idea of growing my own produce for food and possible homeopathic remedies. Plus it was a good way to save money, as being a student in London was not cheap! It was not long before my hobby had evolved into one of my main passions and I was lucky enough to be able to get into an industry where I got to go to work everyday and be involved with something that I genuinely have an interest in. After a while it felt like a logical step to build on the knowledge I already had and was gaining day by day and bring it to a wider audience, which is how “The Growers Guide” series was born and now The “Hydro Chronicle” podcast.
So yes, the podcast, tell us what’s it all about? The Hydro Chronicle is a new and unique podcast that is for everyone who has an interest in indoor gardening and cannabis culture, be that home growers or industry professionals. Every episode features a new and interesting guest from somewhere within the sphere of “Growing”.
Podcast Interview in Las Vegas with Rich Hamilton.
So Rich, where does this passion for plants come from? Since I was a kid I was always interested in gardening, probably stemming from the influence of my Grandfather, who like many I’m sure, had an allotment and used to grow his own veggies. I used to love going down there with him, helping out, getting my hands dirty and seeing how much things had grown in the week whilst I had been away. He was a big believer in herbal remedies too and used to grow his own herbs and make his own concoctions with ingredients such as peppermint, chamomile, Fennel, lavender (and much to my younger self’s disgust, Garlic!) He had a remedy for everything, whether it was a cold, upset stomach or insomnia. To his credit, It was very rare that you would find him anywhere near a GP’s surgery so it obviously worked for him! This was “the norm” for me from an early age, so as I got older I naturally developed more of an interest in the power of the natural world, environmental issues and the ideology of trying to live a little more sustainably wherever possible, through exploring and nurturing plants for my own health and wellbeing.
My vision was to create something similar to the style of “The Joe Rogan experience” podcast, (which if you have not listened to, you should!) where the format is a laidback casual conversation with no formal structure, where the conversation flows organically and takes us wherever it wants, whilst remaining informative, entertaining and educational. It’s all face to face interviews, so no over the phone interviews or anything like that. We are based in Birmingham and use a studio in the city centre but also travel around the world speaking with the very best and biggest movers and shakers in the industry. After writing the books I have and contributing to industry magazines around the world on a monthly basis I have picked up a few things, firstly it is that there are some people that just do not and will not read. For the most part this is just because they are busy and don’t just have the time or head space to read, which is fine because in todays world we no longer have to rely on written print to get information. That’s were the Hydro Chronicle podcast comes in. its only a few clicks and you can be listening.

How did this evolve into you getting in to the hydroponics industry?
Obviously the main subject is geared generally toward the Grow scene, current culture and industry news but we also go off on some really interesting tangents about all kinds of things. My hope is to have the listener come away from each episode having been entertained but having learnt something. Whether that is a tip on how to be a better grower, a better person, a fact about the cannabis industry or just a random “did you know?” to impress your friends with down the pub, it doesn’t matter. What matters is getting involved and being part of the community, even if that is just listening in.
It was when I went to university in London that my hydroponics interest really took off, as I really liked the idea of growing my own produce for food and possible homeopathic remedies. Plus it was a good way to save money, as being a student in London was not cheap!
What it is about is just getting the conversation started, getting things out there to a wider audience and breaking down some of these taboos and mis-information that exists about topics such as CBD and Hemp.

This sounds really progressive and interesting, can you tell us about the kind of guests that you have featured so far? Yeh sure, we are currently half way through the first season (there will be 12 episodes in each season) and so far I have been humbled to have a range of guests from all corners of the Grow community and indeed the Globe. Some of the highlights from the first season include the creator and owner of one of the worlds most popular automated indoor grow systems “Autopot”. Jason Ralph-Smith, gave us the story on how the Autopot system came to be so successful and how it is helping those who live off grid in more remote parts of the world to grow their own food and become self sustained. As well as this he gives his views on and we discuss, how the legal US canna industry is fairing and what the same model in the UK could look like. We also talked to Dr Callie Seaman who is a hydroponics expert and a highly regarded source in the industry from which to gather definitive plant information. Dr. Callie has spent her career formulating and manufacturing a wide range of successful indoor fertiliser products and regularly writes for industry magazines and online forums. Seriously, what she doesn’t know about plants is just not worth knowing!

Also featured is the founder of “Method Seven” Grow room eyewear, and probably one of the coolest, most interesting and inspiring men alive, James Cox. James talked to me about everything from his efforts to help raise awareness of various environmental issues, to the importance of protecting your eyes in the grow room, the Jet team he sponsors, and (not forgetting) the legendary “Paul Newman Rolex” that he recently sold for 17.8 million dollars, which he then…..well if you want to find out about what he did with the 17.8 million dollars you will have to listen to the Podcast! It is a great story, which has changed the way I personally look at life and the world I live in.
They sound like some really interesting guests? What are your hopes for the Hydro Chronicle moving forward? I just want to keep getting as diverse a mix of interesting guests on board as possible. I have a few negotiations going on at the moment that I can’t really talk about until they are confirmed but that I am really excited about.
These are guests who are from more the “activist” and “advocate” area of canna-culture, people who have real and interesting stories and feel very passionate about how the UK and indeed the world needs to re-figure its thinking on the benefits and uses of the cannabis plant in all aspects of our every day lives. I am also hoping to be recording all podcasts in season 2 for visual download as well aural as I think that this will bring another dimension of interaction into the experience for the listener/viewer. Nothing is off the table at the moment, everything I have done so far I have let take its own organic path of growth and this seems to be working well. I am not setting myself any limits, I just want the podcast to be the best it can be, come what may!
takes a few clicks to get listening.
