CBD QUALITY STANDARDS

Why the UK could become a global medical cannabis leader.

CAN THE BRITISH CBD INDUSTRY SET THE GOLD STANDARD FOR THE GLOBAL MEDICAL CANNABIS MARKET?

In a few short years taboos surrounding cannabis have been laid bare and open for critical analysis. Like many topical issues before, the digital world has allowed people to share their experiences with the world. The quantity and quality of anecdotal evidence has reached a critical point where the potential for cannabis can no longer be ignored. Not too long in the past, the accepted rational opinion was that cannabis is bad. Cannabis is bad for your health, bad for your career opportunities, bad for society and surely bad for your own personal health and well-being.

Over 60 years ago in Jerusalem a young scientist, Professor Raphael Mechoulam discovered CBD, THC and the endo-cannabinoid system. 60 years later this research is now reaching the people that need it the most. Medical cannabis patient programs are being approved by governments across the world. In the UK medical cannabis programs have not taken root in part due to the issues surrounding THC (psychoactive) parts of the plant. CBD however, the non-psychoactive and safe compound is 100% legal when cultivated from the hemp plant.

Over 60 years ago in Jerusalem a young scientist, Professor Raphael Mechoulam discovered CBD, THC and the endo-cannabinoid system. 60 years later this research is now reaching the people that need it the most. Medical cannabis patient programs are being approved by governments across the world.

Today the new truth is that cannabis in its many forms and varieties can in fact lead to better health which consequently can have a positive impact on society at large. The consumer challenge is to be able to identify quality products that can be trusted to be safe. There are dishonest companies peddling unsafe and incorrect formulations, there are companies selling over-priced products to naĂŻve and vulnerable consumers. The global industry requires global standards to ensure and fight for consumer rights.

In the UK CBD is sold as a food supplement. Consumers in the UK demand the highest production standards when it can impact health. The UK is the first country with a self-regulating body specifically for CBD. The mission is to lay the groundwork for how CBD should be researched, cultivated, produced and sold. The UK is now emerging as a leader in the medical cannabis world by focusing on CBD and its many health benefits. Just as with all food supplements, help and guidance from the NHS is unlikely to come.

People currently rely upon both recommendation and personal research to find the product and company to entrust with their health. As the medical cannabis and CBD markets mature, inevitable consolidation will take place. Those companies with proven effective products and compassionate company ethos are the brands likely to thrive, and don’t be surprised if many are from the UK. THE FUTURE OF CBD

By Peter Renyolds 2019 had promised to be the year that the burgeoning CBD industry in the UK really took off but, as so often happens in anything related to cannabis, the powers-that-be have been doing their best to interfere yet again. The debacle around classifying all cannabis extracts as novel foods has thrown a spanner in the works and while I believe this will only be a temporary problem, it’s certainly stalled progress. Similarly, while the passage of the Hemp Bill in

the USA (properly known as the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018) was expected to resolve all sorts of issues including banking, payment processing, social media advertising, it’s actually raised new problems, giving the FDA power to prevent CBD products being marketed in food or as food supplements. None of the issues have yet been resolved and it looks like there is some time to go before the FDA clarifies its position. Unlike in the UK and EU though, the FDA does at least consult with its stakeholders. It’s even holding public meetings on the issue. As far as the EU and the FSA are concerned, they behave with the typical high hand of bureaucrats that we’re so familiar with in the UK and Europe. You have to fight to be listened to and they’re really not interested. They just pay lip service to consultation and whatever they say, they’re only interested in top down government. The truth is that any progress on cannabis has to be fought for and that applies to defence as well as attack. Reform has had to be forced and we will have to force the regulators to abandon this attempt to misuse novel foods legislation. It’s

only by creating a media and public outcry or through the force of law that we prevail against the anti-cannabis brigade. So where is this market headed and what can we do to make the most of the opportunities that are out there? Humans have a remarkable record on cannabis. Despite concerted efforts to remove it from use, some would quite literally like to see the plant eradicated as if it were a disease like smallpox or polio, we never let it go. We always find a way to bring it back, to overcome restrictions, even if it means breaking the law. Over the years, across the world, many people have put their lives on the line to enable access to cannabis, either for themselves, their relatives or people who need its therapeutic properties. It’s not going away and the sooner that governments recognise this and stop the ridiculous policies of prohibition the better for us all.

It’s hardly surprising of course. With the benefit of modern science we now understand why we have such an affinity to the plant. We have evolved in a world where it offers a unique form of nourishment that is essential to our health. Fundamentally then, the legal cannabis market is secure. What’s happening is a battle for control. On the one hand, many believe we should be growing and using the plant at a domestic level. There’s no reason why not. It’s relatively easy to grow and there are plenty of ways of processing it in an ordinary kitchen that don’t involve toxic solvents or dangerous techniques. At the other extreme, some want to see it very tightly regulated, so tightly that it would be beyond the means of all but big businesses. The effect of the novel foods classification, were it to go ahead, could mean a cost of £300,000 just to get a single product authorised.

Over the next few years there is going to be an explosion in new scientific evidence about cannabis.

ARTICLE

Legalisation means that more and more money is being invested in research and even governments are now looking for the benefits of cannabis rather than focusing all effort on trying to prove that it’s harmful. Unless there’s a completely unpredictable discovery that overturns everything we know already then I believe the new evidence will confirm both the safety and the beneficial nature of the plant and its components. Cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system will become a target for more and more medicines research. In whole plant form, the products that we now sell as CBD oil will prove their worth as health foods and become even more popular than the multivitamins and health supplements that millions of us take every day. Hopefully, soon, the ludicrous restrictions on THC will be lifted and a choice of products will be available ranging from zero to some sort of absinthe equivalent. Yes there will have to be age restrictions and warnings on the packets but essentially cannabis will become as any other consumer product, the stigma will disappear and there will be accepted and rational laws around it.

So this market is going to expand even more rapidly. Much bigger businesses will get involved and some smaller ones will be squeezed out. Some products will become more like commodities and I expect all the supermarkets will have their own brands very soon. Your bog standard, 10ml bottle of 20% CBD oil will probably come down to less than £10 in the very near future. So today’s CBD businesses have to make a choice. Do they want to become very high volume, commodity businesses? There won’t be room for many of these and inevitably, if they’re not now they soon will be part of a multinational conglomerate. Or do they want to develop a different model, smaller, more specialist, niche markets, artisan, superior service, luxury brands, local or other distinctive offering? For most small CBD businesses, the latter will make most sense and that’s why it’s important to start developing your own special offering and market positioning now. There will be rocky times ahead. I may be wrong about the novel foods issue. The regulators may be forced to push it through and there will be mass casualties among small CBD businesses. So unless you just

want to give up now, now is the time to start making your business fit for the future. There already many doing this successfully but if your business is simply in the business of selling vanilla CBD products, it’s time to start developing your own special niche. You have to add value to what will become a very widely available product. Marketing, branding, continuous new product development, these are the issues ahead as cannabis becpmes an ever more serious business.

Of course, there will be further developments. Once we have a change of government there could well be more significant reform on the way and if you’re already trading in the legal cannabis space it will be your opportunity to take. The online CBD businesses of today may become the retail cannabis dispensaries of the future, just like the stores you can now see throughout North America. One day soon they will be coming to British high streets.

TABOO BUSTER: THE STORY OF HOW MISINFORMATION MADE A MONSTER OF MARIJUANA Cannabis, in both its medicinal and recreational forms, has been followed by a shadow of propaganda and doubt for decades upon decades; a shadow that is

WRITTEN BY

Rhiannon Smith

MAG

only now beginning to lift.

REEFER MADNESS Whilst the much parodied 1930’s public information film ‘Reefer Madness’ appears humorously naive now, it affected policy making and public opinion practically overnight following its release. The now infamous introductory scene details the scourge of ‘marihuana’; turning ordinary teenagers into bloodthirsty murderers, rattling from their addiction.

Because the dreaded marijuana may be reaching forth next for your son or daughter... or yours... or YOURS!

24 HEMP&CBDMAG

It’s not an insurmountable leap of the imagination to draw the conclusion that much of this propaganda was aimed at the suburban parents of middle America. Without any personal experience with narcotics to draw upon (pun intended) there was no reason for them not to believe whatever was being broadcast into their living rooms. It’s for this reason that taboo and fear were attached to cannabis; very few people, especially those with the platform to make the truth known, actually had any experience with cannabis.

A lawlessness that we can barely estimate has grown and is now flourishing. Those working within the illegal cannabis trade were described in a way that might draw parallel to cartels smuggling cocaine across international borders, with deaths on their hands. Dubbed “the assassin of youth”, cannabis never stood a chance against America’s pre-war propaganda machine.

ARTICLE PROHIBITION

With the sheer amount of unfounded fear that has trailed cannabis for so long, it’s not surprising that much of the western world criminalised this plant in the early 20th century. It still seems to many that simply banning a substance would lower its usage, that is until you take human nature into account in even the slightest. Here in the UK, cocaine use has been steadily increasing over the past few years. Of course, cocaine has been illegal for many years, and the public is under no illusion that the drug is anything but dangerous. Unlike cannabis, cocaine has had no attention as a holistic medicine but yet around 4% of the population willfully ignore the law and use class A drugs. When you consider that legislation fails to prevent people using drugs with zero medicinal properties; what sense does it make to assume prohibition would stop people using cannabis? Many now argue that the war on drugs has failed, something that a range of British politicians even agree with.

But of course, there are traditionalists that staunchly oppose this notion; seemingly believing that the world would devolve into chaos (despite the pretty extensive evidence to the contrary). Steve Double, Conservative MP, backs continuing the UK’s war on drugs:

We do not win the war by raising the white flag and giving up and surrendering no war has ever been won by surrendering. Portugal could be considered the largest experiment in decriminalisation to date. In the year 2000, Portugal had a near devastating drug crisis, its class A usage far outweighed the European average despite prohibition. Rather than steadfastly backing prohibition, digging in their heels for further decades of addiction and deaths, Portugal made the decision to decriminalise all drugs; making the situation a public health concern, rather than criminal.

Eighteen years after Portugal decided against prohibition, the experiment is considered by many to be an unmitigated success. Portugal has vastly decreased levels of class A drug abuse; heroin and cocaine use is amongst the lowest in Europe. Fewer people use cannabis recreationally, particularly teenagers and young adults. This demographic similarly uses all narcotics at a far lower level than they previously did; and certainly consume considerably less drugs than the same demographic in the UK. Most importantly though, more people than ever before are seeking treatment for addiction and drug-related deaths have plummeted to all time lows. Like with anything, opinion is divided on the matter of prohibition. But it seems clear that banning cannabis has not worked, and the idea that decriminalising cannabis would lead to mayhem is just another notion founded on nothing but taboo.

HELPING OR HARMING?

Cannabis has been associated with young people for a very long time, as drugs often are overall. The anti-drug campaigns target teenagers via television and school campaigns. America’s famous D.A.R.E campaign may be mocked by many, but it’s still going strong after all these years; it’s clear that a substantial amount of the education system really believes that its necessary to protect the youth from cannabis. Here in the UK, our drugs education may not be quite as intense; with ‘talk to Frank’ being the most famous campaign; focused on practical knowledge rather than the classic ‘just say no’ approach which is so commonly refuted. Drugs may not be the UK’s number one concern regarding its youth at the moment, but it relates to a growing issue in a pretty major way. More people than ever before, particularly those below the age of 25, are being treated for mental health conditions and this doesn’t show any signs of stopping. Cannabis is a particularly divisive aspect of the conversation surrounding mental health.

26 HEMP&CBDMAG

For some time, the general consensus was that the drug could cause the onset of psychosis or schizophrenia. Of course, this still did not prevent young people from experimenting with the substance; but it did cause huge concern.

This doesn’t mean that cannabis should be illegal or considered especially dangerous. After all, alcohol is perfectly legal but most people would agree that it’s probably not in the interest of a patient with clinical depression to drink.

Evidence surrounding the correlation between cannabis and mental illness is murky to say the least. As with all debate, there are those strongly on one side or the other. Some people believe that cannabis needs to be kept away from all people, likely overestimating its propensity to cause potentially debilitating mental health disorders. On the other hand, there are those who flat out refute this; believing that there is simply no negative side to cannabis and it has never and will never hurt anybody in any conceivable way. The truth is likely to be somewhere in between.

There’s also the question of whether cannabis causes/contributes to mental health problems, or if sufferers are just more likely to engage in recreational drug use.

Whilst in treatment for a mental health condition, it may be preferable for some people to simply consume no intoxicants whatsoever; irrespective of what they are.

Addiction psychiatrist Shauli Lev-Ran says on this ‘what came first the chicken or the egg’ debate:

It’s complex and there are a lot of methodical issues that confound our ability to get reasonable answers to these questions.

ARTICLE AN EXPENSIVE NOVELTY? Non consumable cannabis products have existed for some time. Where once they would be available primarily at alternative festivals, usually in the form of decorative hemp clothing and furnishings; they’ve gradually crept into the mainstream.

Hemp based building materials are becoming increasingly popular in recent years. Whilst hemp bricks take far longer to produce than their concrete counterparts, as well as being considerably more expensive; they do have a host of benefits.

These materials have incredible heat retention properties, which help to offset the initial cost of purchase. In some cases, hemp bricks alone negate the need for any other forms of heating within a home or building. Insulation and even radiators can be deemed redundant by hemp.

Anybody who has ever purchased hemp will be aware that it’s, on average, a good deal more expensive than its counterparts. Of course, other more commonly used materials are often considered more economically viable for this reason. It’s cheaper to use other textiles when mass producing clothing, but did you know that hemp can be far more sustainable? Hemp textiles are more expensive to produce, but provide a range of benefits that other materials can’t compete with. Hemp fibres are naturally more resistant to wear and tear, meaning that garments made from hemp last far longer than the average piece of clothing. Even though these pieces of clothing cost more to purchase, they can be considered more cost effective if the amount that they can be used over time is considered.

TABOO’S RECENT DEMISE More recently, the taboos that have for so long followed the cannabis plant are beginning to lift.

With medicinal cannabis having been legalised in the UK, as well as more and more countries around the world legalising for both medicinal and recreational use; it’s clear that the tides are beginning to change. Where cannabis was once demonised as a danger to individuals and society as a whole, its benefits are now being recognised at ever increasing rates. The stigma that surrounded cannabis use in all its forms, from products to

consumption, is beginning to give way to education and enlightenment to make way for a burgeoning worldwide market. It’s difficult to predict where the industry, as well as general opinion, will be in the future; as legislation and media representation are ever changing in this area. But it’s reasonable to expect that eventually the work that was put into stigmatising this simple plant will one day be overturned at long last.

BRITISH PEOPLE DENIED TREATMENT

Despite medicinal cannabis being legalised on the 1st of November 2018, Britain’s most in need continue to be denied life-saving treatment. What were we promised? Following years of lobbying, November 1st was supposed to be the beginning of medicinal cannabis prescriptions being available, via the NHS, for those most in need of alternative treatment. Of course, nobody expected to be given access to legal cannabis at the drop of a hat. Only patients who have already explored every other available treatment option were ever supposed to gain access to medicinal cannabis.

What is the reality? At the time of writing, not a single person (adult or child) has been prescribed cannabis via the NHS. Patients have been prescribed cannabis via private surgeries, at great expense which is completely unsustainable for the majority of people. Whilst Britain does not have an opiate epidemic to the extent of America’s, patients that are prescribed them are being prevented from coming off of these to try cannabis. But for the patients willing to pay for private treatment, there is an opportunity to try the far gentler medicinal cannabis. One of these patients, a sufferer of Crohn’s disease, said “It’s a hard thing to do to yourself to put up with becoming addicted to opioids or putting up with the vomiting and nausea that come with immune-suppressing drugs,” “But the £695 price tag, for only a month’s worth, takes the edge off the good news,”

HEMP&CBDMAG

The parents of children seriously affected by epilepsy were at the forefront of the campaign; with the parents of Alfie Dingley being amongst the most heavily featured in the national press. Patients undergoing chemotherapy are also eligible to be considered for medicinal cannabis treatment, intended to alleviate nausea and discomfort caused by this particularly aggressive cancer treatment. Those suffering from multiple sclerosis or chronic pain conditions are also eligible to receive cannabis via the NHS.

The patient also noted that he would not be able to financially support his treatment in the long term, meaning he will have no choice but to return to the medications he feels has ravaged his body and prevented him from reaching the quality of life that cannabis can provide. The infrastructure and education required by authorities necessary for a system of medicinal cannabis to really flourish also appears to be severely lacking. Significant issues have occurred relating to importing this substance, and these delays can lead to real problems for patients. Parents have been apprehended upon entering the UK with their children’s perfectly legal and legitimate medication; the cannabis is seized, and children are left without medicine for an unspecified amount of time. This effectively places the lives of such children at risk, and is completely avoidable. A child receiving cannabis treatment, Tegan Appleby, has her medicine held by customs; devastating her parents and delaying her

Some families, likely a significantly higher percentage than would publicly admit, have taken matters into their own hands; sourcing cannabis oil (even making it themselves) illegally to treat their children. Caring for a child with a debilitating condition is difficult enough, without the looming threat of prosecution; so this was a welcome change to say the least.

treatment. It is just days ago, at the time of writing, that this was returned to the family. Another problem arises with the length of time necessary to import cannabis for medicinal purposes. A license must be obtained from the Home Office, and the whole process can take up to 28 days; by which point a prescription may have run out of time, leaving the recipient without.

ARTICLE Why aren’t prescriptions being written? One of the largest contributing factors to the complete lack of NHS cannabis prescriptions is doctors’ hesitancy to prescribe. As cannabis is an unlicensed medicine, the responsibility (and in turn, blame) for any unexpected side effects fall squarely on the shoulders of whoever wrote the prescription. Studies into the effects of cannabis for medicinal usage aren’t as extensive as the majority of medicines, due to it only being considered as a viable option by most in the recent past.

Cannabis flower also presents considerable difficulty, as its compounds are far more numerous than most approved medicines. Morphine, for example, is a single compound that can be tested and controlled individually. Cannabis has a range of compounds, each responsible for different effects; with each affecting individual patients to different degrees. Whilst GPs are not able to prescribe, this responsibility falls solely to specialists; there is a fear amongst medical professionals of coming under serious scrutiny, with their medical licenses at stake, if anything were to go wrong. Of course, there is a systematic lack of education spanning a great deal of the medical profession regarding cannabis.

The knowledge most in the medical community hold currently relates only to the exacerbation of mental illness by cannabis. Schizophrenia and psychotic episodes, as well as worsening depression, is as far as most expertise stretches. Medical professionals are not devoid of their own opinions either, and it’s more than possible that somebody’s own personal prejudice or negative experience with cannabis could prevent them from considering its use within their practise. Such individuals would likely be acting in good conscience (considering this to fall within their hippocratic oath) , though this could still be detrimental for patients.

As it stands, patients are left in limbo

So, where does this leave patients? As it stands, patients are left in limbo. A number of people simply remain on medications that they feel do not work effectively for them; medications that do not provide the quality of life that cannabis may be able to. In the case of opiates, this is particularly problematic; as people who would never dream of purchasing heroin from a dealer on the streets, develop lifelong addictions to drugs just as difficult to kick. Some will be refused access to cannabis and take matters into their own hands. This will mean funding potentially dangerous organisations, and pouring money into a criminal market. They will risk arrest, and will be

unable to count on the safety of the products they consume. The third eventuality is available only to those privileged enough. Those registered with private clinics have a slightly easier time persuading consultants to prescribe them cannabis, but this comes at huge cost. For the majority of people, this is simply not an option. Some are able to pay for their medication, though how long they are able to fund this for varies by individual funds. Cannabis clinics are beginning to open, based on the altruistic principle that medicinal cannabis should be more easily available than it is.

However, such businesses are controversial. Some will always see them as a simple cash-grab, perpetuating the two-tier system where only those with a fair amount of personal wealth have such treatment available to them. Any advancements in the availability of cannabis are a positive step, but the blocking out of certain patients is worrisome to say the least.

It is only once education and understanding become bountiful in this country that the playing field will be levelled.

Hemp, The Elephant In The Room

It was quite evident at the UK’s first Hemp and CBD Expo in March that the industry is mostly concerned with cannabinoids (HempTank was the only stand showcasing the many other uses of hemp).

This is not surprising considering the UK’s CBD industry has grown exponentially over the past few years to become the largest in Europe. There are now approx. 1.2 million users in the UK (7 million throughout Europe) and at only 2% of the UK population, this number is set to increase dramatically over the coming years as awareness increases. Even though the US is now poised to accelerate full throttle, following the 2018 Farm Bill being passed to legalise not just the growing of hemp but also the production of CBD products across all states, the UK and Europe are in danger of being left behind as political pressure builds to try and outlaw cannabinoid extracts under the guise of European safety laws and out-dated drug scheduling. What’s worse is that we rely completely on imports. Imports from outside of the European Union are already high risk as Border Force intercept hemp related products (especially from the States). Even terpenes and hemp seed are sometimes held.

32 HEMP&CBDMAG

Meanwhile, the Home Office continue to reject licence applications for anything expect the stalk and seed as they still consider the whole flowers to be dangerous narcotics; even the leaves and roots are considered Class B controlled substances if grown in the UK. Unfortunately, the Governmental view and even that of the CBD industry reflects the powerful ‘Reefer Madness’ propaganda of the 1930s which suggests that cannabis was prohibited due to the psychoactive effects of THC. We all know that this propaganda was based on a complete load of codswallop, however it seems that most of us are blind to the elephant in the room.

Could we soon be farming hemp for CBD production in the UK? Although the EU approved hemp varieties are far from suitable for CBD production due to the lack of breeding and the suffocating 0.2% THC cap, European farmers can still make as much as 33,000 Euros per hectare with varieties which reach between 1-3% CBD. HempTank has received an influx of pleas from UK farmers to place pressure on the Home Office to abandon the out-dated and non-sensical limitations of the 1971/2002 MODA which still classifies the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant as Class B controlled substances.

THERE ARE 3 KEY AREAS WHICH WILL LEAD TO CANNABINOID PRODUCTION IN THE UK: On the 24th January 2019, WHO’s assessment of Cannabis sativa products included the recommendation that all CBD products containing less than 0.2% THC will be removed from any drug scheduling. We expect the UN to vote on this in November 2019. On the 8th April 2019, the European Parliament (AGRI Committee) voted to increase levels to 0.3% THC to keep in line with the US and Australia. This is expected to come into force no later than January 2021 and will open the door for new cultivars with higher CBD levels. HempTank’s policy team are developing white papers and developing a lobby strategy to push the Home Office to adopt the guidance from WHO and support the UK’s farming community post-Brexit.

Could hemp be a catalyst for the UK Government to reach their environmental obligations? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report in 2018 recommended that we have 12 years to reach net zero carbon emissions (globally) in order to avoid catastrophic climate change. Over the past 30 years, carbon emissions have doubled, leading us to a cliff edge of ecological breakdown. This was highlighted this Spring by ‘Extinction Rebellion’, leading to mass public awareness and the international action has kickstarted talks with Government. HEMPTANK, IN COLLABORATION WITH HEMPTATION (WWW.HEMPTATION.ME) ARE WORKING TO IMPLEMENT THE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR THE UK’S RE-EMERGENCE OF THE HEMP INDUSTRY, INCLUDING: A hemp housing development with 400+ carbon negative houses. Farming Co-operatives to purchase specialised harvesting equipment. New processing facilities with the ability to process all parts of the plant.

The HempChar soil restoration project to replenish the lost carbon from soils, improve soil structure and to protect future food security. The feasibility of developing manufacturing plants for textiles, paper, bio-plastics and bio-fuels.

Guy Coxall, Chairman of HempTank, gave two talks in London on the 16th April to highlight hemp as a solution to environmental challenges.

Is there a perfect storm brewing for the UK hemp industry? With Brexit around the corner, there is pressure on the famers to diversify which could lead to soil erosion, depletion, and hunger. There is the growing possibility of the Government being sued for ecocide, mass civil disobedience, children bunking off school and the collapse of not just the NHS but the ecosystem as a whole; times are looking pretty bleak.

NEW STRAIN!

The New The New is our best collaboration yet, Sherbinski x HSO. Crossing a Girl Scout Cookies with a Larry OG has resulted in an Indica-dominant strain with gassy overtones and hints of cinnamon/cookies. Smooth taste, high resin count, and strong couchlock effect ensure this debut collab is one of many not to be missed! The New, descended from the famous Girl Scout Cookies (Sherbs cut) and a selected Larry OG, is our first of many collaborations with the mighty Sherbinski. Mario Guzman, aka Sherbinski, is in the process of creating top-of-the-line marijuana. The resulting hybrid is a stunning plant that oozes quality and that boasts buds wrapped in a delicious subtle gassy cinnamon aroma. A medium growth is recommended indoors, while outdoors the greenhouse and dry, warm, temperate, and Mediterranean climates are preferred. The production of resin is well above average. The New, first in Sherbinski's stabilization process, was the logical place to start. The flavor is sweet and gassy with hints of cinnamon and petrol. With a THC level of 28%, this is followed by an extremely strong high that enlightens the senses. Perfect for chilling out and experiencing that nostalgic Cookies effect and taste. by

STATUS OF HEMP

EXTRACTS IN EUROPE Provided by our partners the EIHA In Europe hemp extracts (such as CBD) are regulated by the EU regulation 2015/2283 and the so-called Novel Food Catalogue. The recent change in the Novel Food Catalogue, which is not a binding document, brought many negative consequences on the EU industrial hemp sector. Even if hemp extracts are not formally and legally forbidden by Europe, disproportionate and senseless measures have been taken against food products containing CBD in many European countries. Without industry consultation, the wording of the Novel Food catalogue was changed in January 2019. As a result, and according to the Novel Food Catalogue today: ONLY SEED DERIVED PRODUCTS ARE CONSIDERED FOOD, LEAVES AND FLOWERS ARE NOW CONSIDERED NOT EXPLICITLY EXEMPTED FROM THE SCOPE OF NOVEL FOOD WHICH HAS MOVED THEM FROM PREVIOUSLY FOODS INTO A 'GREY ZONE', A NEW ENTRY, CALLED CANNABINOIDS, WAS CREATED WHICH NOW STATES THAT ALL HEMP EXTRACTS ARE NOVEL FOOD.

40 HEMP&CBDMAG

Therefore according to the catalogue, all food/food supplements products containing hemp leaves/ infructescence (tea, snacks, muesli etc) or containing hemp extracts now need to obtain a pre-marketing authorisation in order to being placed on the market. These authorisations are costly in terms of time as an authorisation process takes two years plus and significant amounts of money (300.000+ Euro per product). Only large operators and corporations will be able to afford the authorisation process. This way, Small and Medium Enterprises which make up the EU market today, will be naturally left out of the market and alongside, this could potentially destroy the entire rapidly emerging and thriving European hemp industry.

This unnecessary, illogical and illicit change of the former Novel Food entry is unacceptable for EIHA members and the entire European hemp industry. Back in 1998, the hemp industry received written confirmation from the EU (PAFF Standing Committee) that hemp flowers/leaves are permitted for food use, because hemp has been in the human food chain for millennia and it is disingenuous to argue that leaves and flowers in food are novel today. Based on this decision, FBOs made investments in the hemp sector that should be paid-back today instead of being hindered by governments and decision-makers across Europe. Why is a food that was confirmed lawful 20 years ago, suddenly no longer legal today?

ARTICLE EIHA reiterate that CBD is a natural component of the hemp plant that has been extracted and used in the human diet for centuries. Therefore the position of EIHA is that leaves, flowers and hemp extracts are food, which means no authorisation is required to market hemp derived products. This approach only refers to natural food products in which the amount of Cannabidiol (CBD) does not exceed the natural amount present in the plant which was the guidelines as per the previous Novel Food catalogue entry and valid for years up to January 20th, 2019. Following the latest developments in Germany (BVL statement on CBD, 20/03/2019), Spain, Portugal and Eastern Countries, EIHA Board Member, Catherine Wilson stated:

Until three months ago we operated lawful businesses compliant with the novel food catalogue. Through the new wording and hostile enforcement actions hemp businesses are suddenly treated like criminals by some countries.

Lorenza Romanese, EIHA Managing Director stated that:

I hope Member States and the Commission will urgently act in favour of the consumers and the single market as well as the environment. I urge them to support the EU hemp sector. The sector needs a clear and stable regulatory framework which protects consumers and allows hemp businesses to fully develop. The current situation is jeopardising the European hemp industry and also the investments into R&D of health-promoting and environmentally responsible products.

INTERVIEW

HIGH FASHION HEMP

We spoke to High Flyer Apparel co-owner Josh Bowles to learn about hemp textiles and why we might be seeing more of them appearing on our high streets.

56 HEMP&CBDMAG

INTERVIEW “So Josh, when and how did you begin High Flyer Apparel?” We started HFA in 2017 after having a discussion about hemp and realising that virtually no one is doing Hemp streetwear. We looked into why this is and couldn’t really come up with a sufficient answer. So we thought, why not?

“What was it that drew you towards hemp as the material for your merchandise, rather than more commonly used fabrics?” Having been advocates of the cannabis plant for over a decade, we knew about the benefits of hemp prior to setting up the company but have learnt so much more since then. What drew us to this was our prior advocacy of the cannabis plant, and the fact that many people were lauding the benefits of hemp but not actually using its materials. Part of our brand is to dispel the age-old stereotypes associated with the cannabis consumer, and in doing this we practise what we preach. Hemp is 3 times stronger than cotton-only products, requires only a third of the water to grow and doesn’t require any pesticides. You also get a higher yield of hemp fabric when compared to cotton plants using the same sized space. Hemp also rejuvenates the soil it’s grown in, so it has the potential to revive land areas that have been ‘irreversibly’ damaged.

pegged as old-fashioned. I think most people when thinking of hemp get an image of a thick, beige woven material adorned with cannabis leaves. What we’re trying to demonstrate is that this is just the tip of the hemp iceberg, and in fact hemp is just as versatile as cotton, if not more so. You can spin hemp as fine as silk - there just isn’t much of a demand because people are unaware of this versatility.

“If 100 people on the street were asked to picture ‘hemp clothing’, there’s a good chance many would be imagining rainbow patterned baja jackets… Do you think hemp has a lingering image problem?” Absolutely, and that’s partly what I was touching upon above. It’s fallen out of favour over the years, partly due to the emergence of cheaper materials,

Hemp also rejuvenates the soil it’s grown in, so it has the potential to revive land areas that have been ‘irreversibly’ damaged.

“Do you think most people are aware of hemp’s impressive properties when it comes to clothing?” Definitely not. Despite it’s historical use, and the fact that it was actually very common to have clothes made from hemp a few hundred years ago, it’s kind of been forgotten about and

INTERVIEW

but also because of politics. Let’s not forget the chequered history the law has with the cannabis plant, and that hemp often gets lumped in with it’s psychoactive cousin. Let’s be clear; there is nothing wrong with consuming cannabis, and part of our mission as already stated is to dispel these negative stereotypes. We’re trying to show that the perception of hemp held by most people isn’t wholly accurate and in fact we believe this material is the future of clothing manufacturing.

“Fashion is a growing part of the cannabis industry, with Levi’s recently launching their new hemp range. Do you expect we’ll see more mainstream brands rolling out hemp collections in the next few years?”

58 HEMP&CBDMAG

I think so. These companies have the resources and the capacity to switch their manufacturing over to hemp fairly easily, so I think we’ll see more high street brands utilising the plant. I don’t know how quickly this change will happen though; after all it’s a big task overhauling your entire manufacturing

I think the current conversation about climate change will play a huge part in normalizing hemp. Hemp loves carbon and will be one of the plants we will rely on heavily in the coming decades to combat the earth’s rising temperature.

operation for a material that is currently more expensive to produce than cotton. The only reason for this, however, is the abundance of cotton fields and lack of hemp fields. I think the current conversation about climate change will play a huge part in normalising hemp. Hemp loves carbon and will be one of the plants we will rely on heavily in the coming decades to combat the earth’s rising temperature. We would love to see a global campaign where hemp & cannabis are planted all over the world to offset some of the carbon emissions we’ve so carelessly put into the atmosphere. I may sound like a crack pot, but hemp really will play a vital role in combating climate change.

INTERVIEW Our clothing is for anyone & everyone after all – you don’t need to be a cannabis consumer or advocate to wear our brand.

“Finally, speaking of the wider industry as a whole; do you think the current media attention surrounding cannabis is a positive step (has this had any impact on your brand specifically)?” It’s great to finally see a sensible conversation happening and these high-profile media stories surrounding CBD have only helped get the public on side – it’s just a shame it’s taken 2 children on the brink of death for the government to revise their position. We’ve noticed

that more people are engaging with our brand that might not have otherwise done so before this conversation started, so it’s definitely having an impact. Our clothing is for anyone & everyone after all – you don’t need to be a cannabis consumer or advocate to wear our brand. We just want people to understand and appreciate this plant and also give a voice to those people like us who are fullyfunctioning professionals, only instead of unwinding with a glass of wine each night, we light up a fatty. And that’s ok.

EXPO

HEMP&CBD EXPO 2019

REVIEW

2019 saw the arrival of a brand new major expo to the U.K. The First ever dedicated professional Hemp and CBD expo. Perfectly located at the NEC convention centre in Birmingham, in the middle of the U.K, it made getting to the show an easy win. Not only that but with Birmingham international airport only a 2 minute ride on the monorail it also made it easy to get there from the rest of the world.

68

HEMP&CBDMAG

Open both to the public and trade and spread over the weekend of March 2nd-3rd, the Hemp and CBD expo had 110 exhibitors, 30 speakers and a whopping 5121 visitors. Which for a first show is incredible. The demographic at the show was a great mix of people ranging from the generally curious recreational user, the potential medicinal user, the health and lifestyle crowd and of course the business sector. B2B tickets were free when registering online, which is an inspired move by the organisers. Not only in drawing more interest and potential success to the sector but also in creating a positive atmosphere of like-minded business people, allowing them to network and build relationships that they may otherwise have missed out on. In the bigger picture this is a great thing for the whole CBD and Hemp industry. It was very impressive to see that for a first time show In the UK, the brand presence was so strong. It was like a who’s who of the CBD world. Established American farms GenCanna and Bluhen Botanicals were Platinum and Gold sponsors of the event, respectively, and were there exhibiting and talking about farming and raw materials. There were some big industry names from the grow side of the industry ranging from seed companies such as Dinafem and Mary Jane and LED Horticultural lighting company Sanlight. It didn’t stop there either, there were lots of respected and well established manufacturers of hemp derived CBD products such as Blue Moon Hemp and Charlottes Web, alongside a number of exhibitors presenting white-label opportunities for possible CBD entrepreneurs, looking to create their own line of bespoke CBD goods. Of course there were also all the emerging British Brands and lots of new start ups in attendance which all sat nicely together as one great mix of exhibitors, with one common interest.

EXPO

In such an environment it was really hard to not come away feeling much more educated with, everyone eager to talk about (and offer proof) of the amazing benefits and the versatility of this relatively misunderstood product. It was a game changer in my opinion in helping to break down the stereotypes that CBD and Hemp unfortunately carry around with them in the UK. I would challenge even the most staunch opposer of Hemp and CBD related products and culture to attend this show and not feel differently on the subject afterwards! Aside from the business exhibitors there was a real variety of CBD product available to try and buy. Once again the sheer variety of products just helped to reverberate the vibes of positivity and excitement that could be felt across the whole weekend. The new and innovative product ideas were many. Including of course oils, vapes and smoking paraphenalia but also, tinctures, gummies, drinks, shatter, skin care, nutritional supplements, protein powders, cosmetics, balms, pastes, hemp fabrics and more. It was refreshing to see how these companies were also setting the standards that all businesses should now be working to attain in the future. Proudly advertising their ethical and sustainable business practices, from how and where the products were made, to the boast of being 100% natural, gluten free and Vegan friendly.

The Seminar stage was a great focal point and was busy all weekend, offering a wealth of informative, educational and inspiring talks by a range of guest speakers including Leading industry figures from across the business spectrum, healthy lifestyle advocates and pro-cannabis activists and legal experts. Once again this was a nice mix of topics that was relative to business owners, entrepreneurs and the general public alike. It really added that professional and educational edge to the show, which can sometimes be missing at these events. The 1st Hemp and CBD Expo awards was held following the show on the Saturday night, it was an RSVP and exhibitors event and was a great opportunity to celebrate the successes across the industry as well as praise and encourage new innovation. The categories included best CBD oil, best cosmetics, best extract and best edible to name but a few. This is a great incentive to run alongside the show and I can only see it gaining prestige as time goes on and the show continues to run. Building on the success of this, their first show, described by some attendees as the “best first show they had ever attended, I hear that the team are already back at work preparing to try and top this overwhelming success by starting the planning for an even bigger, better show this September! The plans are already looking impressive with at least 50 more exhibitors expected, an increase in floor space and almost double the number of guest speakers, which should make for a great weekend over on the seminar stage. The next show will be over the weekend of 14-15th of September 2019, Hall 17 of the Birmingham NEC and I for one cannot wait. Go online to hempandcbdexpo.co.uk now and check it out for more details on what to expect, registering for tickets or for possible exhibitor opportunities! By Rich Hamilton

BIG

THANK YOU

TO ALL!

It’s just three months until the Hemp & CBD Expo September edition, but we’d like to take a moment to look back on our first ever show. Last March our event opened its doors for the first time: over 5,000 attendees were admitted over the course of the weekend, 110 exhibitors manned their stands, 30 speakers took to the stage, and the first ever winners of the Hemp & CBD Expo Awards were selected.

We’d like to say thank you to everybody who helped make the first ever Hemp & CBD Expo a success. As the first show of its kind in the UK, organising the event was a tricky, yet exciting, feat for the team. We can’t wait to do it all over again; we hope you’ll join us!

VISIT US IN SEPTEMBER

Last March saw our first show, the Hemp & CBD Expo, burst onto the UK scene; with a bustling hall and reviews dubbing us ‘the best first show’ many had ever attended...we decided to do it all over again this September. Couldn’t make it to our first show? Thinking about attending this September but not sure what to expect? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

“What kind of companies are exhibiting at the show ?”

Our exhibitors go from CBD cosmetics to seed banks, we have tried to get a bit of everything for everyone.

If you’re looking for CBD vape, Cosmetics, Tea’s, Edibles, Seeds, Hydroponics, Hemp textiles, Compliance and regulation companies etc we’ve got you covered. Check out our website www.hempandcbdexpo.co.uk regularly on the exhibitors tab to see who’s coming.

“ What if I’m not part of the industry?” As previously mentioned, consumers are more than welcome to attend and can purchase a B2C ticket for the show. Whether you’re considering taking CBD for the first time, or a real aficionado, there’s something for everyone. Stands containing a wide array of products, from beauty to vape liquid, are manned by helpful staff who can take you through what’s going to work best for you. Or if you’re already a fan, you just might spot something you’ve never come across before. Our seminar stages aren’t just for business owners either, speaker slots include personal stories and testaments to the power cannabis.

“Who can submit their products for the awards ?” Only exhibitors and advertisers can submit their products for the awards, they will be allowed 3 entries each. Award categories : All previous categories from our March show + more. Please find more information on our website, on the awards tab. Submissions must be sent to sales@hempandcbdexpo.com/ Subject line : Award submissions

“ What’s changed since March?” So, you attended our March event. You’re not sure if it’s worth coming twice in a year? Isn’t it just going to be the same show a second time around? Allow us to prove you wrong …

“ How will this benefit my business?” It’s no secret that trade shows are a great, tried and tested, way to advance your business. But in an emerging market, this is especially important. It can be difficult to source the best hemp and CBD products, but with so many quality brands under one roof; you’ll have the time and opportunity to speak with industry leaders and weigh up your options. Our Compliance Corner can also be of great help to both emerging and established businesses alike; providing advice on how to properly market and educate consumers about your products. Making sure you don’t get caught in a tight spot. Similarly, our two seminar stages are a great way to spend a portion of your days being both informed and educated.

“ Will there be another awards ceremony?” Yes, the Hemp & CBD awards ceremony will be back this September but unfortunately only for exhibitors and a limited amount of B2B tickets ! Tickets will be available on our website (* B2B attendees will be asked for appropriate proof of business before hand) We never could have anticipated the amount of amazing products our exhibitors would submit, keeping our judges busy backstage for most of the day. This time, the awards ceremony will be bigger and better than before. Think black tie, private suite, 3 course meal, the whole nine yards.

Expanding with Success! These three simple words were what we decided to work towards for our September show.

Instilled with the confidence of a knock-out first event, we set about making some changes …

The whole team pulled together and worked hard to get everything ready for our first show, but we wanted to push ourselves even further this time.

The first thing we set about doing was bagging ourselves a bigger hall, so this time around you’ll find us in hall 17.

LEGALITY IN THE UK AN UPDATE

The CBD industry continues to grow and public knowledge of the benefits of CBD is increasing rapidly. However, the law in this sector is still under-developed.

When we opened our Cannabis Law department almost a year ago, we were welcomed by the industry with open arms as business had been crying out for legal guidance. We have cemented our position as the UK’s foremost legal experts on the CBD industry and so we are able to provide a legal update from the frontline. Of course, the biggest issue facing the industry is the EU’s Novel Food Regulations. Everywhere we go, people are talking about the recent change to EFSA’s catalogue. You could speak to twenty people and receive twenty different opinions. As in any debate, some opinions carry more weight than others. The recent decision by the European Food Safety Authority (“EFSA) effectively caught everyone on the hop. This includes both business and domestic regulators across Europe. On 20th January 2019, EFSA changed the status of cannabinoid products (including extracts) and classified them as novel under the EU Novel Foods Regulation (REGULATION (EU) 2015/2283) (“NFR”).

80 HEMP&CBDMAG

Article 4 of the regulation states as follows: Article 4 Procedure for determination of novel food status: 1. Food business operators shall verify whether or not the food which they intend to place on the market within the Union falls within the scope of this Regulation. 2. Where they are unsure whether or not a food which they intend to place on the market within the Union falls within the scope of this Regulation, food business operators shall consult the Member State where they first intend to place the novel food. Food business operators shall provide the necessary information to the Member State to enable it to determine whether or not a food falls within the scope of this Regulation. 3. In order to determine whether or not a food falls within the scope of this Regulation, Member States may consult the other Member States and the Commission. 4. The Commission shall, by means of implementing acts, specify the procedural steps of the consultation process provided for in paragraphs 2 and 3 of this Article, including deadlines and the means to make the status publicly available. Those implementing acts shall be adopted in accordance with the examination procedure referred to in Article 30(3) The concern here is that this decision has the potential to render all CBD products across Europe unlawful unless you have marketing authorisation from EFSA. The NFR states that any product, which has not been in regular human consumption prior to 1997, needs marketing authorisation from EFSA before it can be marketed

for sale to humans. The process of obtaining such authorisation is long and expensive. In any event, any application for authorisation would effectively be accepting that the classification of CBD and Cannabinoids as being ‘novel’ is correct. Which it is not.

ARTICLE

In practice, we suspect there will be relatively little impact upon the industry. EFSA’s catalogue is ‘advisory’ only. It is guidance and has no legally binding impact on member states. There is no requirement for domestic regulators to enforce it. This means that it will be a decision for the Food Standards Agency (“FSA”) (and any other European domestic regulator) as to whether they enforce the EFSA decision.

Robert Jappie- Head of Cannabis Law Mackrell Turner Garrett

We were in Brussels in March presenting to the European Commission on this issue on behalf of the Cannabis Trades Association. In conjunction with the European Industrial Hemp Association (“EIHA”), substantial evidence of a long history of human consumption of hemp extracts was presented to the Commission’s working group on Novel Foods. Furthermore, detailed legal submissions were made in respect of the extraction methods used by the industry. CO2 and ethanol extraction have a long history of use in food preparation and this has been accepted by the Commission. In reality, there seems little likelihood that there will be a reversal of EFSA’s classification. That would be an embarrassing climb-down by the European Regulator and there are clearly powerful parties with their own agendas at work behind the scenes. So how worried should the industry be?

It seems unlikely that the FSA will enforce in this instance for two reasons. The first is that the FSA does not agree with the EFSA classification. The FSA has admitted that they have seen a wealth of evidence which shows pre-1997 consumption of hemp related products by humans. This tallies with the evidence submitted to the Commission in March. The second reason is that any attempt to enforce by a domestic regulator would be met with substantial litigation. EFSA’s position cannot be reviewed by the European courts, as their catalogue is advisory only. However, a decision by the FSA to enforce what is considered an incorrect classification would immediately be challenged in the UK courts. The likely outcome is that a compromise is reached with domestic regulators whereby the industry is allowed to continue with some minor additional regulatory requirements. Additional regulation is to be welcomed as it ensures that only quality products are sold to the public, which in turn boosts consumer confidence in the market.

The industry is well established enough to fight any efforts to slow it down. A joined up and collaborative approach is required to protect businesses and to ensure that consumers have access to high quality products. No doubt, the new classification of CBD and Cannabinoids as ‘novel’ is a challenge for the industry. Nevertheless, the CBD industry in the UK and Europe is already well established enough to be able to withstand the challenge and to emerge stronger and better regulated as a result.

About Me/Intro to Dr. Dani

82 HEMP&CBDMAG

ARTICLE Intro from Dr. Dani Welcome to the world of cannabinoids and cannabis science! If you would have told me a decade ago when I first started my medical practice that I would become a specialist in cannabis medicine I would not have believed you. However, over the past years my medical practice in Canada has been transformed in many ways by incorporating cannabis-based medicines and it has spurred me on despite many challenges surrounding cannabis prescribing such as negative stereotypes from colleagues (slowly changing!), confusing legislation and guidelines and finding consistent high quality products patients can trust. We now know a fair bit about THC and CBD but these are only 2 chemicals in hundreds that may prove useful in the cannabis plant for medicinal and wellness uses as our knowledge and research grows.

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

The existence of the endocannabinoid system was completely unknown until the 1990s, when the first cannabinoid receptor was discovered in 1990, called the CB1 receptor. I graduated from medical school in 2009 as a doctor without ever hearing about this system or what it does. Despite this lack of education in medical schools, we now know that it is one of the most important systems regulating a variety of essential functions in both the brain and body: from mood and stress to sleep wake cycles and immune function. Even today, almost 30 years after the discovery of this system, doctors are still taught barely anything about the endocannabinoid system in their training years. This combined with the fact that cannabis sativa as a medicine and even non-THC strains of hemp were illegal for the past 60 years in most developed countries means we have a lot of catching up to do in terms of the research and understanding of cannabis, cannabinoids, CBD and their potential uses for health and wellness. The CB1 receptor is found throughout the brain and central nervous system. It binds to THC from the cannabis plant among many other functions, leading to psychoactive as well as pain relieving effects of THC. A year later the second receptor was found, called CB2 which is also located in both the brain and the body. However, this receptor was found also in the immune system, gut, reproductive organs and even bone marrow. CBD binds to both receptors weakly but we know now that CBD’s main action is acting like a modulator or controller of the entire endocannabinoid system, like a kind of regulator keeping things in balance through hundreds of different pathways that we only understand partially.

The fact that these receptors are found in almost every body organ and system helps explain the widespread effects of cannabinoids, both those we make with our own body and those from the cannabis plant which we can take using things like CBD oils and medical cannabis which interact with our own endocannabinoid system. This is much like opioid painkillers interact with our body and brain’s natural opioid system but with even greater and wider reaching effects.

We have a lot of catching up to do in terms of the research and understanding of cannabis, cannabinoids, CBD and their potential uses for health and One of the quick ways to remember all the things that our endocannabinoid system can do is the mnemonic: ‘Eat, Sleep, Relax, Protect, Forget.’ What that means is that our ECS help us with functions such as appetite regulation, normal circadian daily sleep/wake cycles (which is why cannabis can help with insomnia), helps us relax and calm down after stress, helps protect our nervous system (neuroprotection) and helps regulate our immune system to fight pathogens and possibly cancer cells. The ECS is also is involved with recovering from fear-memories and trauma (ie the ‘forget’ part). The most well-known chemicals that interact with these cannabinoid receptors in our brain and body are called anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol or 2-AG. These two chemicals are made naturally in the body.

DISTRIBUTION AT IT’S FINEST

FLAWLESS CBD

Following on from their success at the first Hemp & CBD Expo in March, Hemp & CBD Mag’s Rhiannon Smith caught up with Flawless Co-Founder Irin Maini “Hi Irin, Flawless CBD is a very reputable name within the industry; could you tell me more about when and how it began?” We started a Vape distribution company 4 years ago and through hard work and dedication, we have grown to become one of the largest distributors in the UK, supplying over 4,500 stores. We saw the potential CBD had a year ago, when selling some of our partner brands and so decided to set up Flawless CBD last September and concentrate on becoming the leading distributor for CBD products. Not only did we want to bring some transparency into the market, we also wanted to partner with the best brands from all over the world and bring them to the UK. We like to think that our hard work, research and due diligence into the companies and brands we represent, has paid off, however there is a long way still to go. We want to set up organisations and committees, to help people learn and understand more about CBD and raise the awareness of how CBD how can help our customers.

We want to work with the best brands out there, scientists, research teams and government bodies, to make sure everything is done correctly.

“What are your plans for 2019; do you have any upcoming product launches or shows that you’re planning on attending throughout the year? Do you have any projects you’re working on this year that we should hear about?” Our goal is to really raise the awareness of CBD throughout the UK.

New products are launching over the course of the next few weeks, which we’re excited about. Somnio CBD are introducing CBD tea bags, as well as new additions to the incredible skincare range. Anti age / anti wrinkle serum for dark circles and puffy eyes will be very popular, as well as an acne serum. Additionally, Harmony are debuting a new flavour: Love Hemp as part of their new e-liquid line; CBD FX will introduce disposable terpenes, along with new skincare products. These developments should excite everyone.

“The demand for CBD is responsible for huge growth in the market, with so many brands jumping on board what would you say makes Flawless stand out from the crowd?” We want to work with the best brands out there, scientists, research teams and government bodies, to make sure everything is done correctly. We are in the process of helping set up the UK division of ACTIVE – (Association for Cannabinoids, Terpenes, and Innovative Ventures in Europe) to bring together the leading players, brands, research scientists, legal teams and more. We have a few shows lined up this year in London (Natural products) Berlin, Stuttgart, Miami, Paris, Madrid, the CBD & Hemp show again in September and a few more to be confirmed.

We are a distributor of CBD products so we look to partner up with the best brands, those that are have all the correct protocols and procedures in place with all the necessary accreditations and lab reports and analysis. These companies that we look to work with pride themselves on sustainable farming practices and non GMO and products which are 100% natural. We want to try and ensure Flawless CBD is the leading distributor in the CBD world. We pride ourselves on being a company that’s built on the right values and morals and want to educate the customers into buying the right products necessary for them.

INTERVIEW “Flawless recently appeared on Sky News, could you give us a brief overview of what you spoke about and why you think interest in the industry is increasing?” We were invited to the Ian King Live show, to discuss CBD oil in the UK in more detail. I was asked to explain in more detail what CBD is, the different forms of CBD products now available on the market and to clearly distinguish the difference between products with THC and products with CBD. It was a great opportunity to educate customers and raise the profile of CBD products in the UK, but to also ensure that customers are careful when selecting the brands and companies and knowing what to look out for when using the CBD products. We then touched on regulation and how and where we see the market going in a few years.

Somnio CBD are launching CBD tea bags and the addition to the incredible skincare range: Anti age/Anti wrinkle serum, Eye serum for dark circles and puffy eyes and an Acne Serum, Harmony launching their new flavour, Love hemp the new e-liquid line, CBD FX with the new disposable terpenes and their new skincare products: it's all very very exciting!

“The Hemp & CBD Expo was the first event of its kind in the UK, what was your highlight or favourite moment from the weekend?”

The organisation of the show was incredible. Considering it was the first show, we were very impressed. Not only was the organisation done superbly, the clientele that was attracted was perfect. Great work from the team and a lot of hard work to market the show to the right people and ensure the exhibitors were happy. I can confidently say we at Flawless CBD were very impressed and can't wait to exhibit at the next show with the level of professionalism shown.

“Irin, the company originates from the vape scene; what made you decide to make the switch into the CBD industry?” We saw a growing trend from the US and the partner brands we worked with over there. We saw the positive effects it was having on people and thought it was only a matter of time before it would come to the UK. We trialled the products first, selling CBD FX vape liquids last January, then looked to slowly increase the range and then partner up with some more brands. We saw the positive effects it was then having on people in the UK and

decided to set up a separate division to concentrate on CBD products only and all types not just CBD Vape.

“The media were very curious about having Hemp & CBD products at the NEC and our industry has experienced a lot of attention in the last year or so. Are you experiencing the current spotlight on the cannabis industry as a positive step, and do you have any concerns about the coverage you’ve seen?” CBD is all over the media right now. It's the hottest product on the market and everyone wants to know about it.

I believe the spotlight is very positive. Not only does it raise the awareness of how it's helping people, but it also brings in some transparency into the market to ensure those companies are doing things correctly. With the added spotlight now, everyone wants to ensure they are creating their products the right way and with the correct amounts of CBD etc. The more information the better as it allows customers to understand CBD more

and how it can help with all the different symptoms, the different ways to administer CBD and the distinction between CBD and THC. At the moment I don't have any concerns, but, like with anything good, there will be a negative spin and side to it too. It's about us sticking together as a community to drive this through and really support the growing CBD trend on behalf of our customers.

CBD is all over the media right now. It's the hottest product on the market and everyone wants to know about it. I believe the spotlight is very positive.

INTRODUCTION TO

COMPLIANCE

The first Hemp and CBD Expo in March was hugely popular and could be deemed a runaway success. There were multitudes of companies from the UK and Europe and no shortage of international companies making their presence known. A fantastic result for the industry, highlighting the viability, evolution and growth of the market. Is there room for improvement? Always. On the surface the Expo is an opportunity to network, exchange ideas, educate, market and establish new customer bases. If we look closely it’s far more than this, it’s an opportunity. The Expo is a microcosm of the industry as a whole, encapsulating everything that is great and highlighting less than exemplary practices within the community. We have the chance to identify issues and address them. If we demonstrate true compliance and set the example on an international stage, it bodes well for the future of the entire industry.

94 HEMP&CBDMAG

As the volume of businesses expands so too does the gap between those who comply and the companies that refuse. The CTA were present in “Compliance Corner” and noted behaviour that contravened a number of guidelines. Yes, it can be difficult to navigate the legalities involved, particularly if you are entirely new to the CBD world as so many are. However, ignorance is not the preserve of the uninitiated. Established companies also breach government guidelines, sometimes with deliberate intent but mostly through misunderstanding.

ARTICLE

Frankly, there is no excuse. There are enough sources of information readily available for people to access, either through associations like the CTA, government agencies or credible online resources. It is your business, it is you that will face enforcement, therefore it is your responsibility to gather the necessary data required to operate, legally, safely and ethically. There are always those companies that blatantly flout the rules and regulations in favour of a quick profit. It’s myopic thinking to believe that the actions you take today will not have an impact on the industry. As a consequence, you jeopardise your own livelihood and that of others. Non compliance cannot be sustained. Further regulation is looming, it’s looking likely that the relevant authorities will adopt a zero tolerance approach. The message is clear, shape up or ship out.

Key compliance issues:

MEDICAL CLAIMS As a seller of CBD no medical claims can be made or inferred in any written form and/or any published articles you share as per MHRA guidelines, this includes any company name/logo, hashtags and any testimonials/reviews which you share.

HEALTH CLAIMS ALL health claims should be approved health claims and no wellbeing claims should be made unless alongside a permitted claim.

FLOWERS AND BUD The sale of bud or flower is not permitted as this directly contravenes the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

ISOLATE IN ORAL PRODUCTS The use of isolates is not permitted in items classed as food supplements. Currently it can only be used in vapes, balms and cosmetics.

PET PRODUCTS The VMD are not going to change their opinion any time soon. Pet products in the UK are illegal, as is suggesting your pet can be given CBD or hemp supplements.

ARTICLE

Medical claims are rampant at the moment. To be crystal clear, the market only exists for unlicensed sales on the proviso that NO medical claims are made. If you do not possess the relevant authorisation you have no legal right to be making any claims. This applies to EVERY published aspect of your business, not just your website. All social media channels, blogs/articles, advertising, communication with customers and any testimonials/ reviews that you share, including independent review sites. They are not a clever way to circumvent regulations, the MHRA treat all claims the same, whether explicit or indirect. If you can’t moderate and discard reviews that breach guidelines then they should be avoided at all costs. Failure to comply will result in a Section 165 Notice being issued, failure to comply will result in your web presence (wherever it is hosted) being removed with no capability of review or appeal, your business being forced to cease to trade and unlimited fines can be imposed, as can custodial sentences. This also applies to health claims. What is a health claim? It is any statement about a relationship between food and health. Currently there are 261 approved claims, CBD is not one of them. It has not been evaluated or authorised by the EFSA.

Many company owners come into the industry after discovering the benefits of CBD for themselves. They have a story to tell and a message to get across. Whilst understandable, it’s not permitted. You are selling a food supplement, you should not be making claims in any form. Also it’s just not necessary. There is an abundance of independent information available online and many customers have already carried out their own research or can easily do so. You should align your selling of CBD to the selling of a lemon. When was the last time you saw a lemon sold with health or medicinal claims? Failure to do so will ultimately result in prosecution, irrespective of your country of origin. Failure to comply can result in a prosecution under “Food Crimes” which carries significant custodial sentences and seizures of goods and assets. Perhaps the most misunderstood compliance issue and the focus of many questions at the Expo surrounded the legality of flower and bud. A situation not helped by inaccurate reporting, and unscrupulous sellers engaging in a bit of artistic licence. Suppliers will happily help you to part with your cash, touting mythical loopholes such

as if has under 0.2% THC it’s legal, it’s hemp so fully legal or, it’s legal because it’s processed. It all sounds plausible enough and people rarely scratch below the surface once they’ve heard what they want to hear, that all-too human condition known as confirmation bias. These notions are ironically enforced by lack of enforcement. There have been prosecutions, there will be more prosecutions. There is an upcoming and much needed initiative by police forces to act on sellers of bud. Categorically, flowers and bud are not legal, as per the MoDA 1971 section 37 (1). It’s not ambiguous, there are no grey areas. THC content is irrelevant, that part of the plant is classed as cannabis and as such is a controlled Class B drug. Only seed, stalk and fibre from mature stalk are legal, once separation occurs from the plant. Always use a credible, confirmed source for legal information. Don’t rely on accuracy from the person who stands to profit from you. Once your supplier has your cash they have no concern what happens to you or the product they’ve just sold. Naivety comes at a high price. It can cost you your reputation, business and damage the industry. The old adage

ARTICLE

Pet Products, it really is as clear as day, the VMD (Veterinary Medicines Directorate) the controlling body in the UK says – We consider that veterinary products containing Cannabidiol (CBD) are veterinary medicines and should be regulated as such. We have made this decision on the basis that products containing CBD fulfil the following definition of a veterinary medicine in the Veterinary Medicines Regulations (VMR) by virtue of the effects they have: Any substance or combination of substances that may be used in, or administered to, animals with a view either to restoring, correcting or modifying physiological functions by exerting a pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action, or to making a medical diagnosis

The VMD are perhaps the least restrained department of Government with direct and effective powers as agency of DEFRA, failure to comply will result in an initial notice quickly followed by prosecution. Unlimited fines, seizure of products and premises and custodial sentences form a part of their powers.

In summary: If you continue to make unauthorised health and medical claims, it will be treated as a medicine and the industry will be closed down. If you continue to sell products that are illegal, it fuels the impression that this is an unscrupulous industry concerned only about profit. Without a doubt non compliance is endemic and spiralling, it simply cannot continue unchecked. At this uncertain time, either we unite as a collective force and commit to self-regulation or the authorities will step in and change the way our industry functions forever. This is not a fable designed to frighten you into doing the “right” thing, it’s very real. We’ve seen this evidenced in several EU countries already. Each and every one of us, UK, EU or International traders, have our part to play. Compliance is not an optional extra, if you wish to trade in the UK you must comply with UK/EU law. Women take the lead on CBD

M

ore and more, women are emerging as key players in the movement to promote medical CBD: starting their own businesses, campaigning for legalisation and creating networks for future empowerment. Jillian Swainson, senior vice president and general counsel for Canadian cannabis producer Aurora Cannabis, said: “This industry is more progressive than the rest of the corporate world in North America, especially in the areas of gender representation, cultural diversity, and supporting the LGBTQ community. “There’s no shortage of women in our company who are being promoted. Eventually, the cannabis industry is going to be farther ahead, and other industries are going to be forced to catch up.” Donna Shields, co-founder and chief operating officer of the US online education platform The Holistic Cannabis Academy, told CBD-Intel: “Healthcare is a topic and a career path that interests a lot of women, and women are already involved in it. A lot of the use of CBD is driven by women who are caregivers of children or who have elderly parents, so having it as a career is a logical extension.” Shields says the recent regulatory changes resulting from the 2018 Farm Bill have helped to moved the CBD conversation into the healthcare world in the US but there are still some stigmas around it, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet authorised its use in many of the products it regulates, for example. “Some practitioners are worried about talking to their patients about it. In some areas of the country they’re afraid of losing their licence,” she said. “There’s more leeway in the private sector because healthcare organisations that receive federal funding don’t want to jeopardise that. “I tell people if you’re going to work in this space you have to be willing to be vocal and be a renegade to overcome the stigmas. You have to have the conviction that what you’re promoting is for the good of the patient.

100 HEMP&CBDMAG

“That’s why most people who have become advocates are driven by personal experience. Once someone gets the relief it becomes a personal epiphany.” Despite the stigmas, ongoing legal challenges, lack of standardisation and a fragmented market, interest in CBD for medical use continues to grow. Shields attributes this partly to the educational power of social media and changing demographics. As baby boomers reach an age at which they require more healthcare, they’re finding out about CBD online and then making requests to their doctors, so demand is coming from patients at a grassroots level, she says. “As our population continues to age, many countries are experiencing a healthcare crisis,” said Shields. “This will only get worse, so organisations will need to look more towards a more integrated holistic model of preventative health care as it’s cheaper than the ‘fix it when it’s broken’ approach.”

“If you’re going to work in this space you have to be willing to be a renegade to overcome the stigmas. You have to have conviction.” The role of women in promoting the increasing use of CBD was also a topic for discussion at France’s first-ever cannabis festival, Paris 420, on 20th and 21st April. During a panel discussion, Christelle Garnier of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws France (NORML) invited women to leverage social media to create a network for empowerment. “Feminism can make ‘cannabism’ move forwards and education is the best lever to do so,” she said. “We need to educate people about cannabis.” Safia Ledbi, activist and co-founder of French feminist movement Ni putes, ni soumises (“Neither whores nor submissive”) also emphasised the importance of education. “Few people know about the medical properties of cannabis,” she said. “If women join the legalising movement we’ll win this battle.”

Big names grow their own brands

I

n this age of influencers – paid-for advocates who recommend products on social media – the CBD market would seem to be a good fit. CBD companies are becoming known for creative marketing, with influencer activity already part of their arsenal. With restrictions on CBD promotion, brands are seeking marketing opportunities particularly within the “lifestyle” bracket, which includes beauty, skincare, wellness and sports medicine – and inevitably, some of these influencers will be well known. The most mature market for celebrity CBD influencers is in the US, in recreational cannabis as well as CBD. Sometimes the two can become confused – and several of these vendors sell both CBD and recreational cannabis with higher levels of THC. Some act for their own brands, including rapper Snoop Dogg and actress Whoopi Goldberg. Leafs By Snoop, a pioneer in 2015, puts out both CBD and edible cannabis but is now embroiled in a legal battle. Goldberg, who uses a vape pen to treat her own glaucoma, is co-owner of Whoopi & Maya, whose

products include medical cannabis marketed for the relief of menstrual pain. None of them are psychoactive, insists Goldberg, who says: “This is not about getting women high.” Rapper Master P bought out Trees, a line of cannabis products that includes flower and edibles and a “liquid gold” oil. Country singer Willie Nelson, a long-term cannabis advocate, recently brought out a CBD coffee range. The musician and cannabis connoisseur David Crosby of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young fame has his name on a cannabis brand, while Martha Stewart, the 77-year-old US domestic goddess, is teaming up with Canadian company Canopy Growth to develop a range of CBD health products – for pets in the first instance. Many of the celebrity CBD advocates are driven by medical claims and missions, including Friends star Jennifer Aniston, who has publicly advocated CBD oil, saying: “CBD helps with pain, stress and anxiety.” Actor Michael J Fox, who has had Parkinson’s disease since the age of 29, has championed medical cannabis research through his foundation. “If there is anything working with CBD oil has shown me, it’s that there is always hope,” Fox has said.

INTERVIEW

BUILDING

BLOCKS FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE

106 HEMP&CBDMAG

Hempitecture was founded in 2013, based upon the philosophy that buildings crafted from nature help us to realise our impact upon it. Hoping to find out more about sustainable hemp-based construction materials, we spoke with Tommy Gibbons.

INTERVIEW 2019 is the first year farmers will be able to cultivate industrial hemp in the United States and receive bank loans and crop insurance just like every agricultural commodity.

“Hi Tommy, could you tell us a little bit about yourself and how Hempitecture began?” Sure, when I graduated from college I did not know what hempcrete was but a good friend and high school classmate of mine launched a kickstarter for the first public hempcrete building in the United States. Mattie Mead wrote his senior thesis exploring different natural building strategies and decided hempcrete had the most potential and Hempitecture was born. 4 years later, I was in Ashland, Oregon at a tiny home builder’s conference and couldn’t believe the buzz around hempcrete. I called Mattie to check in on the progress of his business and could see the future he was planning. I had no background in building but my experience working in corporate finance at Goldman Sachs and launching a start-up in San Francisco put me in a position to help make Hempitecture a company that can change the way we build in America to the benefit of future generations.

“Traditional building materials, concrete for example, clearly dominate the market; why do you think hemp materials aren’t as commonly used? Why is it that consumers don’t choose these instead?” In the United States there’s a straightforward reason why hemp building is rare and why we can expect that to change in the near future: industrial hemp was federally illegal until the 2018 Farm Bill. 2019 is the first year farmers will be able to cultivate industrial hemp in the United States and receive bank loans and crop insurance just like every agricultural commodity. Once the local supply chain matures and consumers learn about this eco-alternative that can increase the comfort and health of building occupants, we think they will want to use hempcrete. Hempitecture is working to make sure there will be materials, equipment, product certifications, and training to service hempcrete projects all over the country once the time comes.

“What do you think can be done to make hemp materials more appealing to consumers? Do you think people lack knowledge of their benefits?” When people are buying houses I don’t think they think about what goes in their walls. That’s a good thing and a bad thing. It’s a good thing because they likely wouldn’t know the difference between living in a hempcrete house versus a traditional material house. It’s a bad thing because they’re not in a position to demand their architect use one material over another. That means our business usually engages with people who actively care about the materials that go in their walls or sustainably minded architects who would rather proscribe their clients wall materials that heal rather than hurt our planet.

HEMP&CBDMAG

107

INTERVIEW “What would you say the benefits of hemp are compared with more commonly used materials, and do they compensate for the expense of hemp?”

Hempcrete walls are a superior product and we don’t think they need to necessarily cost more. The materials aren’t particularly expensive but the labour to get them in the walls is. We believe if we can make hempcrete construction fast and inexpensive it will be an easy choice for people to make and they will be saving money in recouped heating and cooling costs.

There are many and I don’t want to leave any out! I think it comes down to what you want your walls to do. You want them to keep you comfortable, keep sound to a minimum, not off-gas anything that could be harmful to breathe, not need any maintenance from pests or mold, and be able to protect you from a fire. The fact that hempcrete walls can do all of that plus trap carbon from our atmosphere is an added bonus.

“Tommy, Hempitecture is based in the US; what similarities and differences have you seen in the US and UK hemp market?” We met a few of the hempcrete builders from the UK when we attended the International Hemp Building Symposium in Belgium last fall. Hempcrete is more established in the United Kingdom and there are more hempcrete buildings and builders who are familiar with the material. They’ve had a 2-3 year head start but I expect in the near future the two markets will look very similar with perhaps the US having a slight edge since there’s more acreage to grow hemp.

108 HEMP&CBDMAG

“What do you find to be the most common reason for customers to come to you and choose hemp?” Usually customers who are conscious of their environmental impact or are interested in the many uses of hemp will inquire about building with hempcrete. We also find clients either looking to rebuild from wildfire or sensitive to the off-gassing from other insulation products interested in using hempcrete.

“As people, as a whole, become more environmentally conscious...do you think that sustainable hemp houses will become more popular? Will we see a shift away from less eco-friendly alternatives?” I do. I think an individual’s carbon footprint will be something that will come under great scrutiny within our lifetime. There are people on our planet that have plenty of resources yet still use more than their “fair share” of carbon. From a material use standpoint, one of the most impactful choices we can make is what to build a house from. That, alongside an electric vehicle, using renewable energy, and resisting unnecessary air transportation are the largest levers for reducing an individual’s carbon footprint. For those that don’t make environmentally conscious decisions, I don’t think they’ll be judged favourably by future generations no matter what they accomplish during their lifetime.

THE UK’S BEST SELLING GROW BOOKS THE GROWERS GUIDES

Rich Hamilton is an experienced hydroponic grower who has worked within the hydroponic industry for over 20 years. He is also the writer and publisher of the UK’s best selling Grow book series “The Growers Guide”.

ARTICLE

The Growers Guide is a game changer of a series aiming to get you taking that first step into hydroponics with confidence. These books focus on giving you system information, product recommendations and simple effective growing advice. Not only will beginners benefit from these books but also intermediate and expert growers can use them to really fine tune their methods and get the very best out of them.

HEMP&CBDMAG

117

ARTICLE Currently you have 4 books available – Coco Coir & Soil, Bubblers DWC Organics and passive watering systems; how did you decide to cover those specific topics?

Originally the idea was to have 1 book and that would incorporate all topics/systems and techniques, however it didn’t take long to realise that, that would have resulted in a book of biblical proportions, literally! So I had to re-think as I didn’t think that a book so big would be user friendly. The idea then emerged to have a series of books (hopefully 8 in total) that each focus on a different growing system. The idea being that the customer can decide which system they want to use to Grow and then select a specific, dedicated, easy to follow book, available to buy at a price that provides excellent value for money.

What research and planning goes into each individual edition of The Growers Guide?

A huge amount of research and planning goes into each book. I read, I talk to people and I attend trade shows. I try and be open minded, listen to opinions, try new products and then make an informed decision on what I think works best and is the most simple way to go about things to the benefit of the end user. I really don’t claim to be the best “grower” in the world. I’m just trying to offer people a way in that will give them the best results to gain confidence and become a better grower in the long run. One analogy that I like to use is that The Growers Guide books are like an easy to follow Cook Book. The ethos being that if you want to know how to cook something, these books will give you the recipe, and show you how to do it using the best equipment and techniques available. Once you have the basics mastered you can then begin to experiment and tailor the variables to meet your specific needs.

I've grown using all techniques, systems and styles and I still don't know everything. I am constantly learning and growing myself. I think that's an important quality which reading gives you, a thirst for knowledge, always up skilling and equipping yourself with more in depth, new information and ideas.

The books are very product specific, was this important to you so the reader knows exactly what to use?

Yes that was always the plan and I’m just really pleased that I could make it happen. There’s no other book on the market that brings all the hydroponics brands together in one place. By doing it this way it makes it even easier for the reader, there is no grey area and they can go in to things with the reassurances that the product that they are using are tested and trusted brands which work.

The book is also well illustrated with lots of high quality photography & illustrations. Was this important to the overall style of the book? Totally, the visuals for the books are crucial, as is the way in which the images are laid out. The books pride themselves on being simple, clear and concise and so the photos and illustrations need to match this ethos.

I’m dyslexic and so the balance of words and images are very important to me. The high quality photos and illustrations will continue in the future editions. I’m always open to constructive criticism and take advice on board to try and make the books content better, including any photos or diagrams which can be of benefit to the reader. As a result, you may see a natural progression in the type of illustrations that you see throughout the books but it will always be to further educate.

The books pride themselves on being simple, clear and concise and so the photos and illustrations need to match this ethos.

So tell us about yourself Rich, how you got involved in growing hydroponically and what you are currently up to?

I have been both growing and working in the hydroponics industry for over 20 years now. However saying that I have always had a keen interest in growing food and medication. I went to university in London, where as you could imagine, space is at a premium and a garden is a luxury for a student only a few can afford. This is where my hydroponics interest really took off as I really liked the idea of growing my own produce for food and possible homeopathic remedies. Plus it was a good way to save money, as being a student in London was not cheap! It was not long before my hobby had evolved into one of my main passions. Some years later I moved back to the Midlands and I’ve now had many roles, from managing my

own hydroponics store to working for large distributors. I have also had a hand in designing new products, and assisting with branding and marketing. I have released 4 books in the Growers guide series to date through my own publishing house “Machiavellian media. I also am an active freelance writer and photographer and I currently write for several leading industry publications. I travel to trade shows internationally on a regular basis so that I can completely immerse myself within the market and stay on top of all the new trends and gauge reactions on what customers and companies want and need as well as predicting where I think the hydroponics industry will go next. I think this is vital if I am to produce engaging current and thought provoking content. With all the changes afoot around the world in terms of cannabis legalization it really is an exciting time to be involved in the industry and it feels as though there is huge excitement and potential about where things are heading.

HEMP&CBDMAG

119

ARTICLE What was your inspiration to not only write and publish the Growers Guide series of books?

My inspiration for the book was simple. In my job working with a distributor, and before as a shop manager, I talked to a variety of people, store owners and customers and found myself getting asked the same questions about hydroponics day in day out, whether it was someone who was just starting out or a more veteran grower who just has gaps in their knowledge. It had me thinking, wouldn't it be great if there was somewhere you could access all this information in a clear, user friendly style and that you could refer back to when needed. And so The Growers Guide was born!

How would you describe the style of your books to someone who has never seen them before?

I’ve tried to look at it from the end user’s prospective and write it in layman’s terms. Easy to understand, in bite size paragraphs with clear images and illustrations that everybody can understand from the young, the old, the experienced and the beginner. I like to think that if somebody with zero experience bought the equipment needed (from the shopping lists in the back of the book) that they would not only be able to understand how all the equipment works, as well as how it is all put together, they would also be able to get great results the very first time.

The first 4 books have been a great success, what kind of feedback have you had from the Hydroponic industry?

The feedback has been fantastic and everyone has been really supportive which means a lot and helps to foster the sense of community that I feel we have within the industry between stores and brands, not just in the UK either but internationally. I have formed so many great friendships and business links through the Growers Guide that, that alone has made it such a worthwhile experience.

With this and the big health stores and chain supermarkets now coming to that table and making CBD products available to the masses I see this as the start of a BOOM. A boom which hopefully will gather momentum and allow for the real therapeutic abilities of all cannabinoids to be finally embraced and taken advantage of.

You also have a fifth book in the pipeline, can you tell us what topic it’ll cover and when it's likely to see the light of day?

The fifth book in The Growers Guide series is going to be “NFT and dripper systems” and it is due for release later this year. We're really looking forward to this one as we've increased the standard content and added more “botany basics” as I like to call them. This extra information will sit alongside new illustrations and explain more in depth about the general structure and functions of your plants. It will be great to boost your foundation knowledge and help you to read your plants better, which can only be a good thing as knowledge is power after all. The best thing about book five is that despite all the extra content we will be keeping the RRP the same at £14.99, meaning more value for money.

Where can people buy your books? Or go for more info on The Growers Guide?

I am very active on Social Media and “The Growers Guide” can be searched very easily on Instagram and Facebook and Twitter. If anyone wants to get in touch or has any questions they can DM me and I aim to reply personally within 48hrs. The books are available to buy from all good hydroponic stores in the UK and online from www.thegrowersguide.com. We offer free postage to the UK through the website and often add a few freebies from some of our supporters as a way of saying thank you for your custom. Alternatively, Book 1 Growers Guide- Coco Coir and soil is available for download on i-books.

Finally what are your thoughts on the Hemp and CBD market and the industry’s rapid rise to popularity that we are currently seeing here in the UK?

I think that it’s great and that its been a long time coming! With what is happening in Canada and the USA and the recent approving of medical cannabis here in the UK it is an exciting time to be involved within the Hemp and CBD market. The times are a changing and we are really starting to see the emergence of mainstream acceptance of the medicinal benefits of the hemp plant and CBD. I think that this is best shown by the shift in the typical CBD user, which I feel can no longer be easily categorised. Everyone is trying it, from young health conscious liberals to my own Irish Catholic, traditionalist mother in law who doesn’t even approve of alcohol! After experiencing for herself (after a LOT of convincing) the undeniable relief that it has given to the neuralgia that she has suffered with for years, even she is converted. With this and the big health stores and chain supermarkets now coming to that table and making CBD products available to the masses I see this as the start of a BOOM. A boom which hopefully will gather momentum and allow for the real therapeutic abilities of all cannabinoids to be finally embraced and taken advantage of. It’s about time everyone caught up with what some of us already know to be true.

The Government driven ideological war on the CannaCommunity is a form of terrorism by their own definition and attacks peaceful people of the CannaCommunity, in the sanctity of their own homes or at social gatherings, for our beliefs and practises in the many benefits of cannabis.

126 HEMP&CBDMAG

ARTICLE Hi there, I’m Phil Monk, a 40-year-old Walsall born, Shropshire lad, raised in North Wales, now living in the heart of wonderful Wiltshire. I’m also a non-practising teacher of Spanish, literacy, ESOL & numeracy, a husband and father of three, and now a human-rights, cannabis activist disabled by chronic myofascial pain from joint hypermobility syndrome, bilateral ulnar impaction syndrome, and depression. I’d used cannabis in secret, like so many, from the age of 16. I thought I was just another “pothead”. Now, after 5 years of extensive reading, I realise this was to manage my PTSD from childhood abuses, to replace the Government’s preferred, protected and promoted recreational drug alcohol and to replace the frequently side-effect ridden prescribed pharmaceutical drugs to manage my pain. 19 years later in 2014, after suffering the life-threatening side effects from prescribed Pharma drugs, including a brain haemorrhage, mini-stroke and two cancer scares, I came smashing out of the “CannaCloset” on a quest for social change, first for “medicinal cannabis”, and now for freedom and equality for all our cannabis community. After a spur-of-the-moment decision in March 2018, I am now the founder and representative of a new community group called We The Undersigned Have a Human Sovereign Right to Cannabis, aka WTU. WTU believe UK people should also have the same human right to cannabis as Mexicans. My WTU Facebook group has grown to 3600+ members in a little over 1 year and we are actively seeking the end of cannabis prohibition laws; seeking equality in law and society with the consumers of the poisonous, highly toxic recreational drug alcohol, which, unlike cannabis, definitely causes disease and psychosis, yet its consumers are not "protected" by criminalisation!

I founded WTU with the help of a solicitor to represent a class action of the CannaCommunity against the government’s political policy of criminalisation. It took over a year to find a solicitor willing to take on the broader human rights aspects of cannabis, rather than the narrow medical focus that many sought to channel me. Thankfully, Lawyers Mackrell, Turner & Garrett have agreed there is potential scope for litigation and to work with WTU. WTU now needs to raise up to £10,000 to have our case considered by top human rights barristers to determine if there is a route to raise litigation. If they identify the route to challenge, then further tens of thousands of pounds will be required to fund to litigation. So, after much pain and effort, the WTU Crowd Justice Fundraiser was finally launched on 4/20/19 at 4.20pm, with 30 days to reach the initial target of £6000 to get the ball rolling, to raise the legal fees required to have the case reviewed by Human Rights barristers. www.crowdjustice.com/case/no-more-governmentwar-on-the-cannacommunity/

All humans have the right to self-determination, freedom of consciousness, expression of identity, to pursue peaceful beliefs & practices and have the right to a private and dignified life. The political policy of cannabis prohibition denies these fundamental, inalienable human rights, upon the false premise that criminalisation is necessary for protecting people from the potential harms of cannabis.

The report commissioned by UK The Department of Health in 1996, into The Therapeutic Aspects of Cannabinoids, by Philip Robson 2001, also set me alight with a righteous fury, as the truth about the relative safety and therapeutic potential of cannabis has been known since 1998, when Robson confirmed:

2) time was needed to develop marketable cannabis based products, and 3) Government should cease the criminalisation of those seeking to assuage their symptoms with natural herbal cannabis. Government only acted on point 2 and the UK's first cannabis research facility was created and has grown to become highly successful. The therapeutic value of cannabis has dogmatically been

refused for 20 years and millions of non-violent CannaConsumers lives have been destroyed by the denial of an essential nutrient and herbal health remedy or by prosecution and persecution for choosing a safer recreational drug to alcohol. The House of Lords also recommended the rescheduling of cannabis, but government then and since refused to act as advised. The government have refused to recognise this therapeutic potential of raw cannabis ever since 1998, despite many reports, until the recent 2018, yet inadequate, law change. Quite hypocritically, whilst simultaneously refusing to recognise the therapeutic benefit of cannabis and dogmatically insisting that the criminalisation of the beliefs and practices of the CannaCommunity was an essential political policy to protect people from the potential harms of cannabis, many important MPs have permitted, facilitated and became indirectly invested in the UK's very own homegrown medical cannabis pharmaceutical company.

ARTICLE NO ONE should EVER be criminalised for choosing to grow or buy cannabis to manage their own health, well-being and happiness. The conflict of interest of our Prime Minister and Drugs and Policing Minister needs to be addressed, those who are determining cannabis reform policy are profiting from the continued prohibition and this does not sit right in a truly democratic, fair and tolerant county. MPs and corporations are permitted to grow cannabis to sell for great profit, whilst the everyday people are denied the right to seek Herbal Independence Day for themselves, for no profit. WTU believes that all have a human right to choose herbal cannabis, often in place of the poisonous recreational drug alcohol or often side effect ridden prescribed drugs. NO ONE should EVER be criminalised for choosing to grow or buy cannabis to manage their own health, well-being and happiness. Natural herbal cannabis has traditionally been recognised and utilised as a food supplement, safer recreational drug, herbal health remedy, industrial resource, creative and spiritual aide by humanity for millennia. All should have the right to choose cannabis for whatever reason free from prosecution and persecution. Clinical Endocannabinoid System (ECS) Deficiency Syndrome may be a root cause of some diseases and it could be argued that cannabis is a super nutritious herb, becoming an essential nutrient for the maintenance of homeostasis, crucial for good health, well-being and happiness. Unfortunately the current model is focused on the capitalisation of cannabis through the pharmacological

manipulation of the endocannabinoid system as a potential therapeutic tool in the management of health disorders, which prosecutes and persecutes any individual managing their health independently with natural cannabis, instead of pharmaceutically manipulated cannabis based products. CorporatePolitico interests decided to conspire to prohibit cannabis as a dangerous drug without the required foundation evidence, in order to protect the financial industrial interests of key US racist politicians of the 1970s in the petroleum, timber, paper, pharmaceutical and cotton industries. The war on drugs was a front for a war on minority groups and hemp industries which threatened political invested interests at the time. This still appears to be the case. It is time to set the record straight and end this oppressive political policy which dictates people’s health choices upon pain of criminalisation and discrimination. The government driven, ideological war on the CannaCommunity and our preferred way of life is unjustified, anti-democratic and harmful to individuals, families and society. CannaCommunity members should not be persecuted and prosecuted for the

simple health choice of pursuing their beliefs and practises in the remarkable benefits of cannabis, often instead of pharma drugs and alcohol. WTU believes all should be free to grow any of the 10,000+ strains of cannabis currently available, or purchase quality assured cannabis from licensed vendors and selected according to their individual needs and preferences, free from fear of arrest, prosecution or eviction. Health is a human right, as is the freedom of consciousness, thought, expression of identity, to peacefully pursue beliefs and practices free from the fear of arbitrary state interference. The right to make autonomous health decisions free from state interference and the threat of criminalisation is what we fight for, not a plant. I hope you will stand with WTU and pledge support in our struggle for the end of the government driven war on our preferred way of life. Please share this campaign and raise awareness to our cause. It is time to sue for Peace. www.wtuhq.org Yours truly Phil Monk

INTERVIEW

A PROFESSIONAL’S

GAME INTERVIEW WITH FOURFIVECBD’S PROFESSIONAL RUGBY DUO George Kruis & Dom Day

Hi Dom, George, thanks for taking the time to chat with us about fourfive! To kick things off, can you tell us when you first discovered CBD, and the impact it’s made in your professional careers? We first heard about CBD when injured. We both had operations around the same time, I had a knee operation and George his ankle. I was searching for the best rehab techniques and came across an article about CBD and recovery. It happened to coincide with CBD being taken off the WADA banned substance list so was safe for me to take whilst playing rugby. We’ve heard a lot about the brand in recent months and your stock seems to be rising in the CBD market here in the UK, what was the motivation behind transitioning from CBD users, to starting your own company? Firstly the belief in the product and what it can do. To make any business successful you have to 100% believe in it. Then seeing what was going on in the states and Canada we believe the UK will follow so timing is perfect.

138 HEMP&CBDMAG

We’ve seen a rapid rise in UK owned CBD companies launching in 2018 and early 2019, what in your opinion, makes fourfivecbd stand out from the crowd? As professional athletes quality and safety is our priority. From day one we have tried to source and produce the safest product and ingredients on the market. But we also want to prove that our products are safe and effective through third party testing. We think it’s key that we set our own standards when it comes to safety. You’ve recently announced you are entering the CBD drinks industry and partnering with the Dublin club xico - Can you tell us more about this and why it seemed a good addition to your product range? Ireland are having a big push towards offering alternatives to alcohol on a night out as there is now a zero tolerance policy on drink driving. They heard about what we were building and approached us. We were delighted to work together to help design some alternatives to a glass of coke or bottle of water if you are on a sober night. It was great fun to do.

INTERVIEW

Obviously your status as professional athletes is a great endorsement for our industry, do you have any other athletes that will be joining the fourfivecbd team with you? Other athletes that are currently using your products? We are But we can tested names linked

keeping our cards close to our chest on a couple of things. say that very soon we will be launching a 0% THC product specifically for athletes. This may see some other with our brand.

Since announcing your support for CBD have you had team mates show an interest in trying it themselves? Yes many and we have been inundated with messages from a wide range of athletes. But we want to make sure everyone is as comfortable as possible taking our products. So we have been waiting on our new 0% THC before really pushing it to other athletes. Why do you think some athletes are still dubious or skeptical about using cannabis derived products? Do you foresee a gradual change in the stigma attached to our industry amongst your peers as we start to learn more about the benefits? The THC is a big factor as it is on the banned substance list and could bring about a failed drugs test. The other factor would be the possibility of cross contamination which is another way athletes can fail a test. These are all things that athletes worry about and rightly so as history will show certain cases where careers have been lost because of such things.

What would be your message to other athletes that have yet to try CBD products? Research every aspect of the company you plan to use. Be sure they are reputable and transparent. Third party certificates are a must. Once you are comfortable you have a good product make sure you dose correctly to get the most out of CBD. Some aspiring athletes who might not have researched the benefits of taking CBD might want to know how you add CBD to your workout. Do you have a preferred method or product (Oils, capsules, edibles) and how and when do you incorporate these into your workout regime? Dom - I use 20g of CBD Oil morning and night to help with symptoms in my knee. Much like you would take multi vitamins I have introduced it to my diet. George - I take CBD intermittently. If I feel I need to sleep better to help recovery I will take 20-30mg of oil or capsules. Mostly after a big training day. Dom, George it’s been great being able to get your insight on our ever growing industry and the part you’re playing in it, Is there anything else you’d like to say to the readers, or anything else we can hope to see from fourfivecbd this year? Keep an eye out for our new product launch in the coming weeks. Thanks guys. and congratulations on the recent Champions Cup victory with Saracens!

THE AMAZING POWER OF HEMP PROTEIN

Hemp seeds have been an essential part of the human diet for millennia, and there’s good reason for this. No other food can compare with the nutritional properties of the humble hemp seed, its essential oils and acids falling in naturally perfect ratios for optimum human health.

HEMP’S ROLE IN FAMINE PREVENTION Eastern Asia has utilised hemp seeds in times of famine for thousands of years. The hardiness of the plant means it grows under difficult conditions, such as a lack of water. The high turnaround from plantation to harvest also makes hemp vital in times where nutrients is scarce and a population is at risk of starvation.

HEMP SEEDS ALSO CONTAIN THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATION OF ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS THAT MAINTAIN SKIN, HAIR, EYE, AND BRAIN HEALTH.

THE HARDINESS OF HEMP As climate change threatens our planet, there is huge concern for much of our food produce across the globe. With many plants affected by changes to the ozone layer, as well as temperature conditions changing, there’s huge concern that much of the produce that supports the human race’s continuation will be wiped out. However, hemp is unaffected by much of these changes. Known as an incredibly resistant plant, hemp actually flourishes in the increased ultraviolet exposure caused by the thinning of the ozone layer.

AUSTRALIAN POPULATIONS SURVIVED TWO FAMINES DURING THE 19TH CENTURY ON ALMOST NOTHING BUT HEMP!

Whilst soy production could fall by a staggering 60%, hemp is expected to keep going strong. The health benefits of soy are widely known; however, its effect on the environment is anything but beneficial. We’re all aware that our rainforests are in jeopardy, and whilst soy production is not a leading factor (accounting for around 1% of deforestation), compared with the devastating impact of cattle farming (causing approximately 80%), it does account for a portion of land being cleared. Hemp, on the other hand, has no such detrimental effects on the environment; meaning customers are free to enjoy products with a clear conscience.

HEMP&CBDMAG

141

ARTICLE

HEMP FOODS IN A MODERN MARKET It’s not just in times of hardship that hemp has huge benefits. This wonder-plant is incredibly cost-effective to farm and has a huge range of uses as a food product. Hemp-seed extracts can be flavoured easily and at little expense and used in a variety of meals and recipes. As the market for vegan food produce grows, hemp is a valuable resource. Almond and coconut milk are already popular dairy-free choices, but sprouted hemp seeds can be used in much the same way to produce hemp milk.

HEMP AND WILDLIFE We know that hemp benefits human health significantly, but little thought is often given to wildlife. Sadly, bird populations have suffered greatly throughout cannabis prohibition. These nutritious seeds are a staple of the diets of most all avarian life. Where hemp was once grown en masse and readily available for wildlife to consume, now birds in the wild are far more likely to come across crops sprayed in pesticides. As a result, the average lifespan has decreased by around 20%; making them another unlikely victim of prohibition.

WHAT CAN BE DONE? Campaign groups have worked for decades upon decades to educate those in power, as well as the general populace, on the benefits of hemp. With deforestation and climate change becoming an ever present threat, it’s becoming an increasingly pressing task to find solutions before it's too late. Large scale hemp plantations could be the answer to these looming questions. Many believe that environmental catastrophe could be greatly assuaged by this single plant. With strains from the cannabis family capable of growing more than 20ft in height, they could be a viable option for renewing rainforests and reoxygenating the planet. The health benefits discussed above only serve to further the argument for industrial hemp plantations surging in numbers across the globe.

It comes as no surprise knowing what we know now that the receptors are largely concentrated in the regions of the brain responsible for mental and physiological processes.

ARTICLE Once THC had been isolated it was then synthesized and made available for research, since when there have been literally thousands of research papers describing its effects. At first it was assumed that due to its seemingly soluble chemistry that THC would act on the body non-specifically, but this was not so. It was as late as 1988 when a US funded government study at St Louis University discovered a specific cannabinoid receptor in the brain of rats. The receptor consisted of specialized protein molecules embedded in cell membranes and responded to compounds in the marijuana resin. It was named “cannabinoid-1 receptor” (CB1). Shortly after this, researchers were able to map the exact location of many more cannabinoid receptors in the brain. It’s unbelievable that this breakthrough research was only completed and presented to the general science community as late as 1990, which is within most of our lifetimes!! It comes as no surprise knowing what we know now that the receptors are largely concentrated in the regions of the brain responsible for mental and physiological processes. Cannabinoid receptors work by acting as tiny sensors that pick up biochemical cues flowing through fluids surrounding each cell. It is believed that the endocannabinoid system is present in every animal except for insects and has evolved over the last 600 million years, before cannabis existed in any form and whilst most life forms were still a ball of cells. Its evolutionary history indicates that the endocannabinoid system must have a very important role to play in the physiology of animals and humans. CB1 and CB2 receptors only respond to 3 types of “on switches” endocannabinoids within the body, phyto-cannabinoids from the resin on buds and leaves on cannabis plant and synthetic cannabinoids. So out of those, only 2 are natural and only 1 exists outside of our body. You could say therefore that cannabis was literally MADE for our bodies, the perfect fit for our health, well being and survival. Endocannabinoids and their receptors continue to be researched today, paving the way for new treatment strategies for conditions including Cancer, diabetes, neuralgia, arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimers and depression. It has been proven that cannabinoid compounds can affect the progression of disease and halt or slow down symptoms, whilst other experiments proved that CB-receptor signalling could help adjust pain, inflammation, appetite, digestion and sleep cycles. They also work as modulators for other mood altering

The functions of most cannabinoids still remain largely undiscovered and it is amazing to think what we could find out about them with continued scientific research.

neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and glutamate. Cannabinoid receptors are amazing, unlike any other neurotransmitter they perform “retrograde signalling” which is a form of communication that actually inhibits and reduces your bodies responses, calming and soothing the mind and body. For example they can lower blood pressure, relax muscles and nerves and basically chill the body out. They are like the controller of all the other neurotransmitters, telling them to back off and cool down when they are ramping up too much. They restore the balance and bring us peace. Cannabis is a unique and natural medicine that tunes into how our bodies work biologically on the deepest of levels. It is because of this humble plant that science has discovered how brain cells and nerves talk to each other! The functions of most cannabinoids still remain largely undiscovered and it is amazing to think what we could find out about them with continued scientific research. The psychoactive compound THC is without doubt the most well known cannabinoid, but arguably it is the other known compound CBD that shows the most promise in the treatment of pain, anxiety and epilepsy. Across all stages of life from birth to death the cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system guides and protect. With such huge social stigma and general misunderstandings attached to cannabis, and with such undeniable evidence of its versatility as a natural remedy at the same time, it is easy to see why cannabis is without doubt the Worlds most popular illegal substance. To this day I'm still impressed by the many ways that CBD has improved my pre and post training performance and recovery, as well as my quality of life in general. It helps me with my sleep, I went from having a broken sleep to sleeping like a baby. A boost to my immune system I rarely find

I also feel energised for each session.

and vegan by choice my digestion has seen a clear improvement in speed and efficiency.

The 2nd question does it help my training? In reality it helps with recovery so I can train hard all week long! If I use the CBD oil twice a day and use CBD muscle rub after hard sessions I find the recovery time super quick compared to when I wasn't using any CBD products. I usually use 1000mg CBD oil, the muscle rub contains 200mg CBD and if I'm vaping usually between 500mg-2000mg before I sleep depending on how deep I want my sleep to be. For people trying it for the 1st time I'd say the vape is the most relaxing for me and the oils the easiest to take. To wrap this up, CBD is an amazing product not only for Athletes but for people in general! CBD has so many healing properties and helps to treat a long list of diseases and illnesses, some people have claimed and shown it to cure epilepsy, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, anxiety and depression to name a few. CBD is known to reduce inflammation, provide antioxidants, and relieve pain. The CBD experience is a very personal and individual one, I cannot guarantee that you will experience the same benefits as myself or any other CBD user, and however what I will say is don't knock it until you try it, you may be very surprised by the outcome. interview and I’d like to thank you for the opportunity to say so much about the plant I am so passionate about.

CBD & ME A BODYBUILDERS TAKE putting your body under. An intense workout is a form of physical stress and that coupled with the unavoidable day-to-day environmental stresses everyone experiences. This can lead to negative effects and possibly undoing the positive benefits of a workout. Unregulated cortisol levels can lead to high blood pressure, slowing protein synthesis and actively prevent tissue growth. Every athlete’s worse nightmare, right?

I’m sure if you’re reading this you are curious to know if CBD can benefit your training? During this article I will be covering the different ways CBD could help aid recovery and my own personal experience of using CBD alongside my training and lead up to competition. Since the World Anti-Doping Agency lifted its ban on CBD, many fitness professionals and athletes are now using CBD as a performance supplement working it into their fitness regime to aid recovery.

There are many suggested benefits to using CBD and the two big ones for me are regulating cortisol levels commonly known as “the stress hormone” and its anti-inflammatory effects. During a high intensity workout, cortisol levels can rise due to the immense stress you are

A preliminary study published in by the Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research suggests CBD works directly with the Endocannabinoid System to interfere with cortisol secretion. Subjects experienced a significant decrease in cortisol levels in their blood. This means that CBD could slow the breakdown of muscle mass and help athletes to build more muscle. CBD is a promising non-toxic alternative for example, a 2018 review published in Frontiers in Neurology concluded

that CBD is an effective way of improving pain and mobility in patients with multiple sclerosis since it reduces inflammation. CBD for exercise-induced inflammation is absolutely the next big area we need to explore! Ok now I have thrown a little science at you let me tell you about my personal experience. I have used CBD in many forms but the most affective I have found is through oils and tinctures both taken via a dropper under the tongue. This way the oil is absorbed into your system much quicker than digesting it. Training can be challenging at times and getting ready for a competition puts a lot of stress both on your body and mind. In the lead up to the World Finals in Boston USA is where I really started to use CBD as a day to day supplement. Helping fight inflammation and cortisol to restore my body to a level of homeostats. My go to is always an oil at 15% or higher. The world is changing and CBD is becoming more and more excepted by all generations.

INTERVIEW

CATCHING UP WITH MEDGRO 158 HEMP&CBDMAG

INTERVIEW

“Hi Rob, Medgro is a new company that launched at the Hemp & CBD Expo; could you tell me more about how it began?” Medgro is not technically a new company, it’s the coming together of three companies with all their combined knowledge and expertise. Each of these companies has been active in the MMJ and CBD market in the USA for the past 8 years.

We’ve been to trade shows around the world and what really struck me at the Hemp & CBD Expo was the diversity and entrepreneurial spirit of the people we spoke to. “Your Quest dehumidifier was a big success at our March show, what are your plans for the rest of 2019? Do you have any upcoming product launches or projects you’re working on this year that we should hear about?” The guys over at Quest are busy working on an even more efficient Quest 506 Series Dehumidifier which we’re really excited about. We also have something extra special to showcase; a Greenhouse & Indoor Facility Controller that offers unbeatable value for money. It’ll hit the market well below the restrictive prices set by rival horticultural controller giants.

“Hemp has a long history as we know, but how much emphasis do you think needs to be put on advancing technology to make more effective use of this plant?” Whatever resources are being put towards advancement, double it and double it again. We’re at the start of an exciting journey and what the future holds for use of this special plant is quite astounding.

“Your stand impressed crowds at the Hemp & CBD Expo, but what was your personal highlight or favourite moment from the show?” We’ve been to trade shows around the world and what really struck me at the Hemp & CBD Expo was the diversity and entrepreneur spirit of the people we spoke to.

“Did you find that you were answering the same sorts of questions from B2B visitors in the UK? What are the main talking points you are being asked about at events such as ours? Do you see a theme?” We get the same kinds of questions wherever we visit. People generally fall into two camps – they’ve either done their homework and are looking for price quotes, or they’re just starting their journeys and have questions about everything, you name it!

“We’re sure Medgro will not be limiting itself to the UK market solely, what other countries provide the most interesting markets in your opinion? Where does the UK fall in the order of priority? The UK is home for me, and one of the main bases of our operation, so we’re always keen to work with UK projects from a logistical perspective. It’s still the case that the most interesting markets, from a financial point of view, are state side and across Europe right now. But this is really an international business that’s ready to boom. We travel everywhere to consult and help projects out. You should see our air-miles!

Thanks a lot for your time Rob, we wish you and Medgro the best success, do you have any parting thoughts you’d like to share regarding the show? The industry? Or readers who might be interested in learning more about Medgro? It all starts with a conversation. No matter where we are in the world or at which trade show, I’d encourage your readers to come and have a chat with us. Let’s see where it leads!

CBD OIL & BALM (Cannabidiol) DO THE RESEARCH FOR YOURSELF... Competitively priced From a well-established UK VHMS brand CBD Oil in boxed 10ml amber glass bottles for accurate dosing 2 Strengths available: 500mg (5%) and 1000mg (10%) CBD Balm 300mg in 30g amber glass jar Full spectrum, UK legal oil with wide variety of uses

Use code ‘HEMP’ for 20% off CBD, an abbreviation for cannabidiol, is a phytocannabinoid which is a constituent part of the hemp plant Cannabis Sativa L. It is EU certified and specifically bred to have a high content of the main 6 cannabinoids, including cannabidiol and various terpenes, all derived from the female parts of the plant. As it has no more than absolutely minute traces of THC, tetrahydrocannabidol, it produces no psychoactive effects, causes no highs and is not addictive or toxic. This means it is perfectly legal to use in the UK as a food supplement up to an agreed daily dosage and is safe for adults to use following the on-pack instructions. We also produce a balm which can be applied topically to the skin. There are no medical claims for CBD use, but sensible internet research can help consumers make an informed decision. Power Health CBD is of the finest, purest quality and is extracted with CO2 so there are no solvent residues in the finished product.

CBD Manufacturing are a Derbyshire based company who believe the route to success for all of their clients is to provide the best facilities, highest quality cannabidiol (CBD) products and outstanding customer service. We recognise that all too often companies fail to meet the needs of their customers. CBD Manufacturing strives to ensure that the cannabidiol products it manufactures are of the highest quality and that the customer experience is outstanding. With over 600 square metres of clean room the considerable investment into production and packaging lines has provided a manufacturing facility with the capability of producing in excess of 1 million units of cannabidiol products per week if required. Compliance is critical – all CBD products are tested to ensure that the full spectrum of cannabidiol elements meet home office and food regulations. Labels are cross checked by compliance specialists to ensure that no claims are made in contravention of current legislation.
